Chapter One Lily Evans's heart beating fast when she saw James Potter's Head Boy badge pinned to his chest, glinting in the light. How she had gotten to be Head Girl was an absolute mystery. One of the school's biggest prankster, was this possible? “Staring at Potter again Lily?” A voice chuckled behind. She jumped and turned around. “Kris? Blimey, I haven't heard you for yonks!” Lily exclaimed, embracing her friend. “Your face is red,” Kris smiled teasingly, hugging her back. Lily put on an indignant face. “I told you once, I told you twice Kris and I repeat, I do NOT like James Potter! You know how much I hate girlie swots like him!” Lily shouted, stamping her feet though her face was flushing. “He's not that much of a girlie swot Lillers - he's chaser on out Quidditch Team, quite nice and popular, especially with the younger years. Plus he's captured a few girls' attention like yours. Not what you can call handsome, that's Black, but he's certainly striking to look at, particularly his extremely tousled hair.” Cut in a blonde-haired girl behind her. “Emily -” Lily said in half-exasperation and half-joyful to see her other best friend. Kris hugged Emily and put on a smirk. “You in for Black now Em?” Emily slapped Kris's arm lightly. “No, just because I said he looked liked a handsome aristocrat does not mean that I like him. Anyways, you know I'm with Walter Stebbins,” Emily replied defensively. Kris put on a look that meant that she was only joshing around. “We all know you fancy someone Kris. Don't hide it,” Lily accused, with her finger pointing at Kris. Before Kris could answer, there was a loud train whistle and the three hurriedly jumped on board. Once they were inside a compartment, Lily decided to observe her two best friends “in the whole world” as Emily put it. Emily. She had met her when the two were assigned to be partners for an Astronomy project in their first year. Tall and petite, Emily was probably the most philosophical person she knew and clever too, being prefect with James Potter for the past two years. Emily and James would be off, working on their prefect duties together while Lily would be eating away with jealousy. Emily and Kris would sympathize but that just made Lily determined to be Head Girl with him. Emily's hair reminded Lily often of bright sunshine matching with her beautiful sky blue eyes on a flowery face. The quality Lily admired the most was Emily was her incredible patience, gentleness and forgiveness she seemed to possess. Lily just could not see how anybody could be like Emily. Kris on the other hand was the night as Emily being the sun-kissed day. She had black hair like a raven's wing up to her shoulder-blades in a rather entwined yet pretty way. Her brilliant ebony eyes with a light-Asian skin made added to being “the night.” Kris was a little taller than average, along with an athletic, womanly figure. She wasn't slim as Emily but was still slender. Kris was humorous, a little weird and stubborn perhaps but friendly and understanding. In the past years and now Kris played Keeper for Gryffindor alongside with James being captain since his fifth year - Lily was also jealous of all the time Kris got to see James. It seemed all her friends got to be with James in their previous years. “Hey Ms. Head Girl, don't you have to go to the front?” Emily asked, breaking Lily away from her thoughts. Lily eyes widened in surprise and looked down at her watch. “Oh shoot - I've gotta go!” Lily said hurriedly and shot out of the compartment. Kris and Emily just laughed and continued with their conversation. Lily kept glancing at her watch now and then bursting into where the prefects and a glaring James waiting. “Sorry for being late all.” Lily winced, seeing James's glare piercing her. “I hope that doesn't happen again Miss Evans,” James said coolly who could not keep the surprise in the voice that the fact Lily was Head Girl. It was impossible! Had Dumbledore finally cracked? The Slytherin prefects sniggered. Lily threw them a dirty look. “You'll be sure it won't, though I don't know if I can keep the promise,” Lily responded just as coolly. James was not going to back down. “I would love to give a watch Evans; it would be helpful wouldn't it?” James said, eyeing the watch on Lily's wrist. Lily narrowed her eyes at James; for the moment Lily couldn't see how she had ever liked him. “Why thank you for being so sweet but you don't need to waste your Galleons for me Potter, if you wanted to impress me, do it in some other way please,” Lily said sweetly and innocently, knowing very well he wasn't trying to impress her. The prefects watched the two interestedly, some giving sniggers at Lily's comment. “Don't be so conceited Evans,” He snapped testily. “Don't be such a liar Potter you know you just want to catch my attention,” Before James could respond a Hufflepuff prefect cleared his throat. “Yes before Potter rudely started this argument,” Lily began as James looked ready to throttle her, “I would like to introduce myself as Lily Evans, your Head Girl and your so-called mature Head Boy, Potter -” “How lovely for you to say so Evans,” James interrupted Lily, gritting his teeth in some strained way. “Now your duty as a prefect is…” James went on with Lily adding some notes every time he spoke, both of them trying to cut off each other. Rather then listening to both of them speak, the prefects watched the two argue with each other, it was entertaining. After the meeting was over, Lily went over to her compartment to where Kris and Emily were at. They looked up and seeing Lily's I-failed face they immediately burst into questions. “Not so good Lily?” Kris asked shrewdly. “What happened?” Emily asked, concerned for her friend. Then Lily rambled on about how the meeting went. “I wasn't suppose to act that way….Oh, how in Merlin's beard am I going to catch James's attention?” Lily groaned, burying her face in her hands. Emily patted her shoulders. “Hey, Let's go eavesdrop on them…See what he thinks,” Kris pointed out. At that Lily lighted up. “That's a good idea. Come on!” Emily looked at her friends with an apprehensive look on her face on nevertheless followed. The three walked casually along the side as they saw Peter, his mouth stuffed with Peppermint Toads. They followed Peter, creeping silently behind him as he shut the compartment door. The three bended down at the floor to hear what they were saying. “This is stupid, I can't hear anything…We're witches for goodness sakes!” Kris exclaimed. “Do the listening spell Lily.” Lily nodded and murmuring a word, the voices for them inside were clearer. “So they can't hear us but only we can hear them,” Lily said lowly and Emily hushed them. James was clearly irritated. “So you know what that Evans said next?” James demanded. Lily looked guilty but he did deserve it. He didn't need to be so cold! “No what?” Sirius asked, openly amused. Somehow Lily knew James was glaring at Sirius. “Not supposed to amused Sirius, you're supposed to be angry,” James said. “Just go on James,” Remus said, as Lily's instinct told he was waving his hand dismissively. “She said, `Why thank you for being so sweet but you don't need to waste your Galleons for me Potter, if you wanted to impress me, do it in some other way please,'” James imitated Lily's voice, “Impress her, my arse.” “But she is pretty good-looking, you've got to admit that James,” Sirius commented and Lily looked flattered but she wished James would have said that instead of black. “Alright, so she has admirable hair and probably the most amazing eyes but really it's just the ugliness shining out of the true Evans. The hair and the eyes are just disguising a devil.” James said lazily. At first Lily smiled but hearing the ugliness part she frowned. He'd pay later. “I just can't stand her! All she does is play stupid pranks all the time, always trying to get the teachers to think her as a little angel, getting so riled up and harassing anyone who insults her. The thing I hate the most about her is how she flips her hair, flirting with any boy that catches her eye!” James exploded, saying this in all one breath. “She doesn't go out with boys that much using the two weeks thingy,” Peter added and Lily silently thanked Peter for defending her. “So?! Flirting to deceive boys is the same thing just - just (“Having trouble to find the right word Potter?” Lily said under her breath, satisfied) just as bad!” James shouted angrily. “Her type is the type I really HATE the most. It makes me SICK!” Lily felt like crying, those words hurt like knives stabbing into her heart but pride didn't let her. “So what's your type Prongs?” Remus asked. “Someone NOT like Evans,” James said grumpily. Somehow Lily knew Sirius was rolling his eyes. “Specify,” “Well,” James said thoughtfully for the first time and in a much gentler voice. “Someone who doesn't care just for my money and looks. Someone who's nice and smart, not like a mindless doll; not like the girls who practically throw themselves at me. A girl who's witty and funny. Someone caring and willing to listen to my troubles, not just theirs and most importantly, someone who's willing to stand by my side for the rest of my life.” There was a long silence to this. Lily sensed they were trying to guess who matched that description. “You know Prongs; I think you just don't know Lily that much. She fits your description once you get to know her better.” Remus commented. Lily smiled, she was glad Remus was her friend and on her side. James snorted. “Maybe I don't but I know it's not gonna be a girl who plays stupid pranks on people, harassing innocents and torturing people just because either they're bored or are so sensitive about insults. I guess a prank once in a while is alright but what Evans does just goes way too far.” James stated with a determined air. Lily could hear feet shuffling and the four standing up. Emily poked Lily with a mouthing of `Time to go' and she nodded. They walked away and heard the compartment door slide open. “What are you doing here Evans?” James said staring at Lily with terrible loathing. The three whirled around as James's friends surrounded him. “Walking if that's illegal Potter,” Lily said coolly and was very much pissed at James for his comments. “We're arriving at Hogwarts soon, I see you still haven't -” James started but Lily ignored him and pointed at herself. “Induoavi,” Her muggle clothes was replaced with her Hogwarts uniform with the Head Girl badge pinned on her robes. “Continue with your comment Potter?” Lily asked, cocking an eyebrow at him. He glared and grumbled. Remus looked amused as Sirius pretended to pat James in the back. “It's a very advanced charm that works for people like moi,” Lily emphasized her point loudly and clearly. “Arrogant, know-it-all brat.” James muttered under his breath as Lily, Emily and Kris went back into their compartment. “That was not the way to show James you were the one for him,” Emily said exasperatedly. “I know I know but still…” Lily said desperately. “Lily, you heard what James said. We'll help you be like the girl of his dreams. It takes time and we're willing to help.” Kris said determinedly as Emily nodded. Lily stopped and smiled at her friends. “Thanks, there isn't anyone in the world who's like you guys,” Lily said sincerely and hugging them both. She would show James Potter how wrong he was. How very wrong he was. A/N: Induoavi is in Latin. Induo means dress and avi means change. So what did you think? Press that little blue button that spells `R-E-V-I-E-W!' Thanks to those who do! [insert smiley] ) Chapter Two “Did you see his face?” Emily laughed. Lily nodded, gasping for breath. “That was so hilarious especially when the Giant Squid kissed him!” Kris said, clutching her stomach and leaning against the wall far support. They had previously played their prank on James whom was soaking wet as they sat down in the Great Hall. It wasn't a very original prank Lily admitted but she couldn't let James get away insulting her. Her best subject was Charms and used a charm to push James in the water when he got off the carriage. At the exact moment it seemed that the Giant Squid, it accidentally kissed him in mouth. “…Prefects lead the first years and I entrust Head Boy and Girl to lead the rest of the years. Now, off you trot to bed.” Dumbledore called, finishing his speech after the feast was over. “See you upstairs Lily,” Emily called after her as she and James lead the rest of the years upstairs. Lily grinned at her friends and later was met by a glaring, wet James. “You did that didn't you Evans?" James blurted out irritably. Lily tried to stifle her laughter and put on her most innocent face. “I admit nothing,” Lily said, crossing her arms. James only glared fiercer as they walked up the stairs. “Sure and I'm a flobberworm,” James retorted. “I'm not thick, I know it was you!" He pointed his finger at her. “Innocent until proven guilty,” Lily said, quoting Dumbledore. “Cirdog.” The Fat Lady opened her portrait and Lily strode in with a smile on her face. She felt a wet splatter all over the back of her robes in response. “Ooh, why I ought to…” Lily growled not turning around and stomped upstairs to her dormitory. Slamming the door behind her, she flung herself onto her bed. Lily, in fury threw a pillow meaning to fling against the wall but it was caught by a grinning Kris. “Temper Lily m'dear.” Kris said, tsking as she sat beside Lily, followed by Emily. “So, had a row with Potter?” Emily asked as she put her arms around her friend and quickly drew it away. “Your back is all wet!” Lily nodded grimly. “I don't know why 1 like him so much! Now I absolutely hate him!” She cried out angrily. Kris rolled her eyes inwardly. Lily said this every time whenever she and James had a heated argument. “Lils, everyone is not perfect and there are days when you will hate somebody and days that you will. Like last summer you practically swooned about him to us and now you're ranting about how much of a nitwit he is.” Kris said in a sensible manner. Lily sighed. “I know…but I did not swoon!” Lily exclaimed indignantly. Lily was bombarded with cries from Kris and Emily at the same time, “You so did!” [] Lily woke up the next morning sleepily and slowly opened her eyes. The sun was shining through the window and bounding out of bed, she quickly changed into her uniform. She brushed her hair rapidly and bounding to her trunk, she pulled out her Ancient Runes dictionary, parchment and her quill. “Simply lovely dear,” Her mirror commented as Lily walked downstairs to the Common Room. It was about two weeks after she arrived from Hogwarts and she wanted to get started on that Ancient Runes translation she had to do. Sucking her quill absentmindedly, she poured over the text, frowning. “Hienzah Dooique eihwaz...” She muttered, who was so intense in her work that she didn't notice James studying on the other table in the corner. He looked up and glowered at Lily before looking back to his work. “I think eihwaz means partnership or defense... one of those…” She said aloud to herself, flipping though her runes dictionary. “Shhh!” Lily looked up to see James glaring at her, with his finger on his lips. “Well sorry for disturbing your very important work,” Lily said sarcastically and went back to her work. She heard a snarl of frustration. “For your information eihwaz means defense.” James snapped, shutting his book with a loud bang and furiously striding towards the portrait hole. Lily was taken back. He usually wasn't the one to usually lose his temper easily that was more like her. Unless he was having troubles on something, he was short-tempered. Closing her book she ran out of the portrait hole to catch up to James. “What is your problem?” Lily demanded firmly but there was some sort of gentleness in her tone. James looked at her incredulously. “What's my problem? What's your problem? Working with you for various Head Boy and Girl projects, you playing pranks and not doing your duties, you ask me what's wrong?” He exploded. “Look it wouldn't be that bad if you actually had a life!” She yelled hotly. James looked ready to throttle Lily. “You want to know why I keep on refusing you whenever you ask me out on a date?” He shouted back and Lily was now quiet. “Because you ignore your Head Girl duties and playing pranks on innocent people, hexing anyone who insults you just because you think you can and especially dating boys as if they were objects you can throw away after you don't like them anymore! Stop your silly games Evans, you're seventeen and the Head Girl now, it's time for you to act your age! I don't know how Dumbledore chose you for Head Girl but I sure know that you don't deserve that position!” Lily's eyes bulged angrily. “Maybe it's time for you to get a life! Life doesn't only rotate around studying and working on exams and homework! Life includes having fun and facing real trouble when it comes for you. Like enjoying the sunrise or making jokes with your friends or watching the clouds in the sky! Snap out of your work and spend some time with the outside world Potter! Try to live your life to the fullest! Sometimes, a good harmless prank can help people cheer up and as for hexing people who insult me, they call me that word one muggle-born hears from certain Slytherins! You don't know me Potter, not about anything! There's more to me than that so stop acting like you know everything `cause you don't! ” She said furiously and turned around. “Cirdog!” She said angrily and slammed the portrait door shut. “Fix me properly this instant!” The Fat Lady said indignantly but both James and Lily were too angry to listen to anything. Lily felt was too angry to feel anything else as people stared at her when they walked out of the Common Room to go and eat breakfast. “Hey Lily!” Emily called out and grabbed Lily's wrist. “Yeah?” She snapped angrily as Emily looked taken back. Kris looked worried and winced at the furious Lily seething. “I won't ask right now but let's go and eat breakfast.” Kris said as Lily followed them, silently and her temper flaming. “James again?” Emily whispered and Kris nodded. “Seriously, how does Lily like him after fighting all the time?” “This year they do...James and Lily never actually thought until what happened in fifth year. They were nice to each other in first year... Remember the prank she meant to pull on Snape in second year but unfortunately it happened to James instead and he didn't forgive Lily when she tried to apologize?” Kris said. The two called James `Potter' only when Lily was around but otherwise they called him James. Lily meant to burn Snape's cauldron but her aiming marked James's cauldron instead. When Lily apologized to James after Potions, James didn't believe her and stubbornly believed that she had done it on purpose on him. Then Lily got angry and the two ended up throwing hexes on each other, yelling all the way up to Madam Pomfrey's. Ever since then they didn't talk to each other until fifth year. Fifth year. That was a big fight…There was a transfer student from France, Fantine-Merle Vasser, who was friends with Lily at the time. The two weren’t there at that time – both had told Vasser and Lily to go ahead after their DADA written exams (O.W.L) were over. Vasser and Lily had picked on Snape and the reason was because Vasser was bored. Picked was a mild word…They had tortured Snape and it wouldn’t have been for James, Snape would have faced the ultimate humiliation…After the O.W.L’s, Vasser had then dumped Lily, Kris and Emily made new friends with Heina McClatchy and her group of friends – and both group of friends disliked each other. Vasser became enemies with the three of them, especially Lily and both, she and Vasser received surprise pranks that embarrassed them – by James. Vasser accused Lily and there was no proof that James did it, only the smirk and look in his eye whenever he looked at Lily. But fortunately, Vasser went back to France at the end of the year. They winced, watching Lily glare at the hall with fierce, fiery, falcon-like eyes and striding furiously towards the table. “We’d better watch her over…” Emily muttered. Kris nodded. “What’s the matter Evans had a bad day?” A voice interrupted Lily as she silently and angrily started throwing food into her plate. “Just shut your flapping clanghole McClatchy,” Lily said irritably. A girl with reddish-brown hair smiled sweetly, pretending that Lily didn’t say anything. “Did you hear something about…a Hogsmeade date?” McClatchy said in a honeyed voice. “No…why should I care about your private affairs? Go ahead and bang with a bloke, I don’t care.” Lily said. McClatchy’s nose flared and her eyes flashed dangerously. “Careful of your words Evans…It’s no secret that you like James.” McClatchy smirked. Lily tensed up and looked up quickly. “So you said many times before...Ever since Vasser joined your little clan…” Lily said lightly with a hint of warning. McClatchy smiled. “I know…she still sends an owl every now and then.” She said in a casual tone. Lily narrowed her eyes; she didn’t like McClatchy’s smile and her tone. She was up to something. “What do you mean? What are you up to?” Lily said sharply, glaring her eyes and scanning McClatchy’s face. She had masked her emotions carefully – it was perfectly innocent and blank. “Oh, nothing. Just to tell you to watch out this year…” She said in a mysterious way and left to join her friends, who were watching and snickering at the other end of the table. Kris and Emily sat down, giving suspicious looks to McClatchy. “What’s she up to?” Kris asked, glaring at her. McClatchy only gave an innocent look and returned chatting to her friends. “I dunno…She talked about Hogsmeade dates, Vasser and to watch out this year…It was annoying, she was acting like honey in disguise of poison.” Lily said disgustedly as she watched McClatchy flirting with James. Lily knew McClatchy really didn’t like James; it was only to spite her. She lifted her head proudly and turned away. “Vasser? What about Vasser?” Emily asked, feigning a questionable look. Lily shrugged. “Hmmm…” Emily said her expression now thoughtful. “Ah stop your I-know-this act Em and just eat. We’ll find out sooner of later.” Kris said, rolling her eyes. There was a loud clinging against a glass somewhere and the hall gradually hushed. Dumbledore rose up and gazed upon the students. “I’d like to announce that we will have a special exchange program this year, with the United States and France. Students in sixth and seventh year are able to submit a form from their Head and it can be given anytime starting today to end of this week to Professor McGonagall. We will have one student going to the States and the other going to France, in exchange, we will have two students, one from America and the other from France in Hogwarts for the rest of the year. Thank you.” Dumbledore announced and sat back down. Immediately, an excited chatter ran through the Great Hall. “Did you hear that?” Kris said excitedly. “Are you guys going to submit your names?” Lily looked unsure. “I dunno…It sounds like a great opportunity but if I do get chosen, but still…” Lily said, eyeing James out of the corner of her eye. He looked just as excited as Kris and was talking animatedly with his friends, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. “So that was what McClatchy was talking about,” Emily said thoughtfully. “Guess who the exchange student from France is going to be?” She said grimly. “You don’t mean that–” Kris started, her face expression clearly miserable. “Vasser?” Lily said horrified. A/N: It’s supposed to be a dramatic cliff-hanger…but I don’t really think it is…Anyways, Fantine-Merle Vasser is French – Fantine means childlike, Merle meaning ‘blackbird’ and Vasser means a corruption of Vavasour, one who holds an estate next to a lord. I chose random French names and pieced them together though I’m thinking Fantine-Merle to be rather childlike and has a mind of a clever blackbird…We’ll see. The fifth year incident is suppose to be like the fifth year incident in OoP in the chapter, ‘Snape’s Worst Memory’ except swapped. Oh and did anyone notice the password ‘Cirdog’ is Godric backwards? I had to research British slang words, since I’m American…so for those of you who don’t know British slang words and expressions…‘bang’ means having sex and ‘Shut your flapping clanghole’ is shut up but it’s not a nice expression to use. Since it’s rated PG (though the rating may go up to PG-13), there will be no womanizing, etc. Anyone is welcome to correct any mistake about British slang words and expressions and it’d be helpful if you gave me some. And I’m going to need help on French accent…all I now is that they say ‘t’ as ‘z’ and skip the ‘h’… My chapters may be edited time to time and that is because I’m currently searching for a beta-reader. Anyone who has a recommendation of a good beta-reader or wants to be, tell me when you drop a review. So anyways, if you don’t see a new chapter, it means I’ve edited the previous chapters; so you have to read from the beginning, mwahahaha… Oh, almost forgot – make sure to check back at Chapter One’s A/N at the top because it’ll tell you what this: --- and [] means. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Chapter Three Project 731: The Lily and James Swap Year 7 Review Thanks: ForeverYours A/N: I haven't gotten many reviews last chapter, and I think I know why. I've visited the Portkey forums and read that the most tiring thing they hated to read about was Amerian and France exchange students. And I didn't even know that it was exactly those two countries that people hated to read about for exchange students! I haven't read too much L/J fanfics where there are American and French exchange students… but I do know that mine's will be different. It's not what you think it is. It will NOT be like any of the clichéd fics. I will stay away from that. You'll see why I needed the two exchange students, since it's essential to my plot. So please, read and review on — if you still find it dissatisfactory to the middle of this fanfic, tell me the reason. I need the constructive criticism! Oh btw, Kris nor Emily will end up with Sirius or Remus. I don't like those fics where the best friends of Lily end up dating Remus and Sirius either. I tried my best with the French accent, so bear with me. Chapter Three Frankly, Lily didn't want to go anywhere to the States or France. If she'd be allowed to go with her friends or at least people she knew, Lily would've submitted her name. In the whole school, she was probably the one who didn't even care about it. Both of her friends, especially Kris, were enthused about the “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to America or France. Emily's parents, unfortunately had not signed the form when she had owled it to them. Emily was disappointed for a few days but got over rather quickly. Kris, on the other hand, was chattering non-stop about the trip and even betting with Sirius Black on who would be picked. Lily looked around the Common Room - Kris was singing tunes and doing the strange things that scared people a bit which were one of her ways to show that she was impatient. Emily was curled snuggly up in a red velvet armchair intensely reading some book. James was chatting with Remus while Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew were busy battling each other in Chess. Heina McClatchy and her friends were huddled in a corner, giggling and whispering, rolling her eyes; Lily turned her attention back to James. Grinning foolishly, she gazed at him, analyzing him carefully for the ten thousandth time. Emily was right, he wasn't what you could call handsome, but people always seemed to look twice at him. James's hair was unique and her opinion, his best feature. His extremely tousled jet-black hair fit James somehow as it would look ugly on some other person - unless there was James had some long lost twin…though she strongly doubted it. There was amusement along with an eyebrow raised for disbelieving and laughter on his long, thin face. And it was amazing how James's hazel eyes could change expression to expression - if his face hid his feelings, the eyes told it all. “Yes!” Kris exclaimed, breaking Lily's thoughts. She reluctantly tore her eyes away from James. A tawny owl dappled with grey flew down, dropping an envelope on her lap. The owl nipped Kris's hand affectionately and set off. “What?” Emily asked, looking up briefly from her book. “My parents signed it!” Kris said eagerly as she ripped the envelope. Clutching the form tight, she looked liked as if she had struck gold. “Congratulations,” Lily said, watching James out of the corner of her eye. He was now next to Sirius who seemed to be losing to Peter. James was looking carefully at the chessboard and bending forward with one hand on his chin thoughtfully, supported on one knee. Kris sighed and rolled her eyes. “Stop staring and let's go to McGonagall!” Kris said and Lily felt herself going red. “I'm not! And can't you do it yourself?” Lily said indignantly. Kris grinned. “I could but someone needs to watch over your eyes popping out too far that it'll fall out,” She teased. Lily made a face. “What have I ever done to be stuck with you?” “You still love me Lils, I know it,” She grinned widely and stood up. “Hey Em, we'll be back, just got to hand the form into McGonagall.” She grabbed Lily's arm and waved to Lily. “So Dina and Colassol went up the hills…the power of the stone…” Emily murmured who obviously didn't catch a word Kris said. “I'll just take that as a yes,” She said and dragged Lily to Professor McGonagall's office. “Ms. Park, Ms. Evans, is there something you need?” Professor McGonagall asked briskly. “Professor, here's the form. Today's the last day to turn it in, right?” Kris asked, thrusting the paper at her. “That's correct Ms. Park - now Ms. Evans do you have a form also?” She asked, lowering her spectacles at Lily. She shook her head. “Very well. Tomorrow the Headmaster will announce the names at breakfast. Run along outside please.” She said crisply. Kris bowed her head but stopped herself just in time. As soon as they were in the hallway, Lily broke into a grin. “This isn't home sweet home Kris - you don't have to bow to your `elders.'” “It's a habit,” Kris retorted. “I'm trying to break it as you can see.” She said stiffly. Lily laughed and placed a hand on her friend's shoulder. “I know. Let's go back to the Common Room.” Lily said, smiling. Kris hummed some tunes quite impatiently as they walked back to the Gryffindor Common Room. “I hope tomorrow comes soon enough.” Kris mumbled. [ ] Lily rolled her eyes as Kris bounded around the dorm, immensely excited. “What are you so hyper about?” Lily repeated exasperatedly for the fifth time for Kris was too thrilled to answer. “Don't you know Lils? Today is when Dumbledore is going to announce the people who are going either to the States or France.” Emily said placidly. Lily shook her head. “Can we go down yet? Is it time? Huh, huh?” Kris exclaimed rapidly. “I dunno. McClatchy and Pekes are gone.” Lily answered, looking at the other two neatly made beds. “Let's go!” Kris said and started to sing. Lily and Emily exchanged looks and followed Kris, who was already dashing outside the portrait hole. As they walked in the Great Hall, there was a loud buzzing chatter as a loud ring rang through the air. “Would you please?” Professor McGonagall said sternly, putting her fork down. Standing up, Dumbledore cleared his throat and gave them a small smile. “I'd be happy to announce our two students who will be going either to America or France,” Dumbledore said gazing at the students' faces rapt with attention. “The student that will be going to America is a Thorina Claspe, a 6th year Ravenclaw and to France is Walter Stebbins, a 7th year Hufflepuff. Congratulations to both of you. After breakfast, may the two students come to my office for more information. The two of you will leave on Wednesday which the day after that day, the two exchange students will arrive. Thank you.” There was a sound of jubilant cheering with moans of disappointment. “Awww…” Kris groaned. Emily looked half-joyed yet half-sad and Lily knew exactly how her friend felt. “Hey Em, isn't that your boyfriend? Walter Stebbins?” Lily asked kindly. Emily nodded. “Your boyfriend? You can tell him if he doesn't want to go to France, I'll go in his stead.” Kris lifted her face. Lily rolled her eyes inwardly. “So does Black pay or you?” Lily asked, changing the subject. “At least I don't have to pay…but neither does he.” Kris sighed. “Em, tell your Walter that I said congratulations.” Kris said resignedly. Lily patted her back. “'Atta girl.” Lily eyes strayed to James. He was obviously disappointed like his friends except Remus and Pettigrew. She was secretly happy that Kris and James didn't get to go to the States or France; she'd miss her friend and her crush (since third year) too much. ---- Emily had come back from her last date with Walter Stebbins. She was beaming, yet a hint of sadness glistened in her eyes. Hanging her scarf, she lay down on her bed, gazing at the ceiling. Lily looked towards her friend's direction with sympathy. She knew how Emily was feeling right now. Kris would have too, if she wasn't brooding over the World Quidditch catalogue. “So, how'd it go?” Kris teased, looking up from the catalogue. Emily sat up, a resigned smile plastered on her face. “Beautiful,” She said, staring into space; her sky blue eyes absentmindedly glazed at the window. Lily walked over to her friend and sat down, patting her back. “It'll be alright. You've agreed to send letters when he goes to France right?” Lily asked with genuine concern. Before Emily could answer, two girls strode in with airs the trio found snobbish. McClatchy and her best friend Pekes. Heina McClatchy was not one to describe pretty but with her short-cropped frizzy reddish-brown hair framing her smooth, creamy skin; little golden freckles dappling her cheeks and eyes the color of a pine tree; she was a little more than ordinary looking. Lindsay Pekes, on the other hand, was a beauty - with her long, straight straw-colored hair and alluring brown eyes. Her skin was pale and rosy and what probably made her cute was her nose. “So, when's Fantine comin'?” Pekes causally asked to McClatchy, glancing at the trio out of the corner of her eye. “Today of course. The Professors have been ranting about it to us for the past days. Fantine from France and Charles Tolchoose from America.” McClatchy said loudly. Lily gritted her teeth. She knew they were doing this on purpose. How could they not know? Kris rolled her eyes and got up. “Oh my gosh! As if we didn't know!” Kris said in a ditzy, sarcastic voice and slammed the door shut. Lily dragged Emily away and followed Kris. McClatchy smirked at Lily as Pekes seemed to be seething at Kris about the tone of her voice. Kris was mocking Pekes and McClatchy and the trio knew very well that McClatchy, Pekes and the rest of her friends were not a bubbly, ditzy group. Well, maybe except Ashton. “You really lost your temper there Kris,” Emily said seriously. Kris whipped around, her face expression clearly frustrated and irritable. “I know that!” She snapped and ran her fingers through her hair. “It's just that, Vasser's is going to be here…and...I hate her!” She said her voice softening as she collapsed on the coach. Lily nodded and sat down. “I know,” Lily said but then her face lighted up. “How about a prank when she gets here? Give them a little holiday spirit?” She said, smirking. Kris smiled widely and opened her mouth. “Don't even think about it Evans,” A voice cut in. The three looked behind them and saw James standing behind them, scowling. Lily glared and crossed her arms. “It isn't nice to interrupt people's conversations Potter,” “Neither is pulling pranks,” James pointed out. “But we were giving a nice, harmless festive cheer,” Kris piped up, putting on an innocent face. James rolled his eyes. “Think me thick Kris? I know what you three mean by that.” He said, giving Kris the I-know-that-isn't-an-innocent-face. Emily looked to Lily and cut in before the argument turned serious. “Heard about the exchange students coming today?” Emily said, changing the conversation. “Yup,” Remus said, sitting next to her. Lily widened her eyes in surprise; she hadn't noticed the other three approaching. She was further startled when she found Sirius suddenly sitting right between her and Kris. “Scared you didn't I?” Sirius asked jokingly, grinning. Kris rolled her eyes. “Not me,” Kris said. “Neither Lily.” She added later. “Sure Park, sure.” Sirius said. “Didn't you see her going like this?” Sirius exaggerated by imitating a shudder in surprise Lily gave. Lily shoved Sirius playfully, laughing. “Just shut up Black,” She said, shaking her head. Sirius winked as James crossed his arms. The last thing he wanted was another conversation with Lily. Remus shook his head and motioned James to come and sit in the arm chair. Sighing, James walked over and reluctantly sat down. “So most likely Vasser's going to be in Gryffindor?” Peter said quietly. The trio (Lily, Kris, and Emily) exchanged looks. Peter didn't talk often in front of them nevertheless make eye contact. “Probably,” Emily said. Kris gave Lily her “spirits dampened” look. Lily knew that the last thing Kris wanted to hear was about Vasser. “Not about Vasser please.” Lily said quietly. “Why not?” James asked rather cruelly. Remus elbowed James. Sirius shot a look that clearly said try-to-get-friendly and cleared his throat, breaking the uncomfortable silence. “A game of Gobstone anyone?” Sirius asked grinning as he pulled the table of some other student's unfinished game of Gobstone. “That's other students' game,” Emily said in a strict voice. Sirius shrugged, a smile plastered on his face. “Don't be such a spoilsport Mother,” Sirius said as Emily winced at Sirius's nickname for her. Lily and Kris couldn't help it. They laughed, including Remus and Peter and even James was breaking to a grin. Sirius given nicknames to everyone and all students found it embarrassing. “I will,” Kris announced in a dramatic voice. “I challenge thee Enemy Black!” Sirius laughed and pointed at her. “But thou shall fall Enemy Lady Park for thou cannot play Gobstone!” Lily stood up and placed her hand on Kris's shoulder. “I, Lady Knight Lily shall aid Lady Knight Kris in this battle of Gobstones!” Lily said. Sirius slapped a hand down. “So be it. But be ready to die.” Sirius remarked as he made the first move. ---- The game ended with Sirius losing to Kris, with help from Lily. James had finally loosened up and he, Remus and Peter taunted Sirius about losing to a “girl who couldn't play Gobstone”. “Have fun Enemy Black,” Kris waved cheerfully as the he tried to cover his ears from the tantrum of his friends. She looked back at her watch and jumped. “Blimey! It's dinner time!” She exclaimed and ran down the stairs. Emily turned to Lily. “She forgot that Vasser's gonna be here,” Emily said and Lily nodded. Exchanging glances and deep sigh, they walked downstairs to the Great Hall. Kris's good mood turned to a stone face when there were two figures in standing in the Great Hall by the teachers. Lily felt the same dread inside. Great… There were murmurs, whisperings, and curious glances at the two exchange students the whole school had been expecting. As Emily and Lily approached Kris looking moodily at the empty dinner plate, she began to speak, “Great! Vasser…” Kris said, swishing her napkin around her plate. Laying a sympathetic hand, Emily nodded and said nothing. Lily looked up to see the smirking, mocking face of Fantine-Merle Vasser. She hasn't changed one bit… Lily thought, glaring at her arch-rival other than James Potter. She had a mocking, little face with a skin of a smooth, creamy complexion of a French. Vasser had glossy black hair twisted into braids, all wounded on top of her head with glittering, sly, coal-black eyes and a deceiving, cute dimple. The only thing that had really changed about the French girl was that she had grown taller…and her body was now well-rounded into symmetry—instead of the gangly, lank, skinny bean-pole back in fifth year. The exchange student from the States, however, looked quite different. He had tousled (though not as much as James), light brown hair and deep, mysterious cocoa-colored eyes. There was no doubt that this Charles Tolchoose was good-looking. Black will definitely have a contest… He looked intelligent, and had this cheerful, outgoing and friendly aura shining around him. Dumbledore stood up, smiling jovially at the students. “We have the two new exchange students with us today and for the rest of the year. Let us welcome these students to Hogwarts warmly: Fantine-Merle Vasser from France and Charles Tolchoose from the United States. Now, Professor McGonagall, if you please.” He said, sitting down as he gestured towards the stern lady. Nodding curtly, she stood up, carrying a stool and old, raggedy hat. “Tolchoose, Charles?” She ordered, motioning to the stool beside her. Obediently, the boy sat down at the stool and look apprehensively at the hat. Lily herself remembered the same expression when she was a first year. The hat took an unusually long time to sort the American into a house. Finally, after a few minutes, the brim of the hat opened. “RAVENCLAW!” There was an exploding cheer from the Ravenclaw table, especially the girls, and polite clappings from the rest. “Vasser, Fantine-Merle,” Professor McGonagall read, looking at the girl with no emotion at all. Wonder what the Professor's thinking about her right now… “GRYFFINDOR!” The hat shouted after a few moments. There were loud cheers from McClatchy and her clique as Vasser, smirking, sat down. “Still has that air…disgusting. And the way she acts, I wonder why she isn't in Slytherin.” Kris grumbled, shooting death glares behind the French girl's back. “So true,” Lily said, nodding as food appeared in front of their eyes. “What's the prank? I can't wait to humiliate her…” Emily piped up, suddenly, brushing back a strand of her light-blonde hair. Kris looked up in disbelief as Lily choked on her chicken. “What?!” Were the surprised exclamations from the two. Emily shrugged her shoulders. “So?” “You…just…never said stuff like that, that's all,” Kris said, looking at Emily with a rather proud, congratulations face. Lily grinned, and clapped the unusually not-so-mischievous girl on the back. “Congratulations Emily. I think you've finally matured.” She teased, as her friend made a face. Laughing, Kris picked up a loaf of bread. “What prank should we do for the prank? Any ideas?” Emily asked, after drinking her goblet. “I dunno yet…Kris?” Lily asked, turning to her Asian friend. “I don't either,” Kris replied, grabbing a drumstick. “No ideas at all?” Emily asked, cocking an eyebrow at Kris. She nodded. “Why?” Kris said curiously. Lily sighed and waved her hand in front of Kris's face. “Hello?! You're the plotter and planner of our pranks, aren't you? Emily usually does the behind-the-scene work and I do the dirty work.” Lily remarked. Kris crossed her arms. “I do some of the dirty work too!” She exclaimed indignantly. “I know you do…I'm just naming our strengths.” Lily explained, as if she was trying to elaborate about the Pythagorean triangle to a kindergartener. Kris rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say, Evans…or should I say, Mrs. Potter?” Kris added in slyly, her eyes twinkling roguishly. “KRIS!” [ ] Lily wearily walked up the stairs. Emily and Kris had a running contest up the stairs, which surprised her because it was usually her and Kris doing it. Emily's been acting different ever since Vasser got here. Hmm…wonder if that's good or bad… Racking her brains for a good prank…the last person on Earth Lily Adreienne Evans wanted to meet was Vasser. “W'y `ello, Lily,” The mock-pleasant voice spoke. Lily slowly turned around, and scowled. “What do you want?” She demanded, planting her hands on her hips. “Am I not allowed to greet my old friend?” She asked innocently. “Oh, hello friend,” Lily responded sarcastically, empathizing on the word `friend'. “Just sod off, Vasser.” The French girl, by nature, was a good actress, most unfortunate to the trio. “Dear me,” Vasser said in poisoned honeyed tones. “All I wanted was to say 'i. You haven't c'anged Lily Evans. Still the same feisty, fiery girl. Speaking of fire, 'eard you still 'ave a flame for James.” Lily sighed in her mind. Why do they do this? “I don't,” She said stubbornly, but feeling her face burn - Lily knew she was flushing crimson. Damn this… “Rig'z…zat's why your face is all red,” She said amusedly, with a hint of sarcasm. Lily felt her temper boil and she whirled around, her face red like a red rose, with chilling, ice-cutting green eyes flashing dangerously. It was a very good effect as the French backed away slowly, looking at Lily with slightly widened eyes. But it was quickly replaced with the same smirk. “Look here Vasser. I don't want anything with you, got it? So keep quiet and don't cross the line. This is enough.” Lily said, wanting to grab her by collars of the Hogwarts robes and thrust her against the wall with all energy she had. “You wis', Evans. You wis'.” Vasser muttered, the smirk still plastered on her face. Ignoring Fantine-Merle, Lily continued walking up the stairs to the Gryffindor tower. Chapter Three 10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Chapter Four Project 731: The Lily and James Swap Year 7 Review Thanks: Jessie Flower, cjn, JayaMioneDurron, Sauron of Mordor, pottersgirl363, Neo313 (Wow, you guys are absolutely awesome! I'm flattered by the compliments, really.) A/N: Yes, I know, just to tell you one of friends said that James acted a bit too girlish. I'm here to say that may be so due to the personality switch since James acts like Lily, and visa versa. However, I will try my best not to make him so feminine. Is it because of he's prone to holding grudges in this fanfic? And I am working on Chapter Five right now, though I may not be able to update so much now that I am actually starting high school… -shudders- And now to answer question(s) (sort of) before going on with the next chapter — Vasser is so evil, she should be in Slytherin! Perhaps so, but I will tell you that the exchange students… there is more to both of them than that meets the eye. That is all I will say. Chapter Four “Mr. Tolchoose, are you listening?” The sharp voice of Professor Ochere reprimanded. It was almost near a month since the exchange students arrived, and the tousled (thought not as much as James, Lily noted) head of Charles Tolchoose - or as he preferred to be called Chet, grinned at the head of his house. Professor Melissa Ochere was the Potions teacher; and though a beauty, she liked no one and favored none of the houses. The cold, piercing, ice-blue pair of eyes stared at the American exchange student. “Of course Professor,” He responded automatically, the friendly aura glistening again as he smiled brightly. Lily looked towards James and Black (who both disliked Chet) rolling their eyes. This was due to the fact because the American was one of the heartthrobs at Hogwarts and Sirius didn't like competition; as for James, it was because his ex-girlfriend was now part of the unnamed “Chet Tolchoose's fan club”. Lily knew James still had a flame for his last ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth “Betsy” Point. “Alright Tolchoose, tell me then, what potion makes a person calm and soothe from stress?” The Potions teacher lashed out a question. Chet smiled, he knew the answer. “The Draught of Peace,” He said smoothly in his American accent, the smile still on his face. Professor Ochere frowned; it was obvious that she had hoped he'd get it wrong. “That is correct. What happens to the drinker if you are tactless with the ingredients when you are making the Draught of Peace?” Ochere asked him, crossing her arms. “The drinker could —” He began but the Ravenclaw head cut him off. It had used to be Black that she had hated the most, but now it seemed to be the clever American exchange student. “Could? I'm asking what will happen, not what may happen.” “The drinker will go to sleep and sometimes, it will be almost impossible to wake the drinker up.” Chet answered, emphasizing on the `will'. “What is the main ingredient of the Draught of Peace?” “Hellebore,” “The moonstone is one of the ingredients in making of the Draught of Peace. What do moonstones do? What color?” The class now was attentive; this quick-to-question and quick-to-answer talk was interesting. Kris and Emily exchanged looks. Ochere was firing questions like bullets shooting out of a gun. “There are many colors of moonstones. Moonstones are to help a person become emotionally balanced.” Chet replied, as he flashed a flirtatious smile to the Potions master just to annoy her. “Correct,” Was all she said, glaring at the boy and whirled back to the board. Chet laughed quietly and resumed doodling in his notebook. Kris shook her head, a smile playing on her face. “I don't blame him for not paying attention. All Professor Ochere is doing review for the N.E.W.T's. And we already know all this!” Kris whispered to Emily and Lily. The red-head eyes automatically turned to James; who was glaring at Chet with immense dislike while the girls all whispered `Good job!' to him. Smirking, Lily turned to James. “Jealous, Potter?” She whispered, crossing her arms. “Yeah right Evans,” He retorted in the same low tone, which now turned his attention to Lily. “Whatever. You seem to be jealous of all the beautiful people at Hogwarts,” Lily said, arching her eyebrow. “Let's see, me and a whole lot of other people, like Chet Tolchoose.” She concluded, smirking at him. “You wish,” James snorted. “I'm not jealous of inflated ego brats like you.” “Inflated ego? How original Potter. Too thick to think of new insults, aren't you?” Lily said smoothly. “More like giving PG-rated insults, so you won't go and cry off,” James glared. “I'm no crybaby!” Lily exclaimed indignantly. “Yes you are,” “No, I'm not,” “Yes,” “No,” “Yes,” “No, you stupid git!” “Yes, you bullying toerag!” “No, I am NOT, you stuck-up anorak!” Lily began to stand up. “Yes, you ARE, you arrogant priss!” James replied loudly, standing up. They both seemed to have forgotten that they were in one of the most dangerous teacher's classroom. “And I'm not an anorak!” He added. “NO, I AM NOT! AND YOU ARE AN ANORAK, A GIRLIE SWOT!” Lily shouted, her green eyes flashing terribly. “WHY YOU INSUFFRABLE B —” James started furiously, who actually looked like he could have hexed Lily for years. They hadn't realized that the whole classroom, including Ochere was staring at them. “QUIET!” Ochere yelled, and the whole class froze. No one had made their Potions teacher this mad; not since second year when James and Sirius had tried to play a prank on Lily and her friends for revenge, but the prank went wrong and accidentally to their teacher instead. With nervous, but loud heart beating of James and Lily - they cringed under the raging Ochere's wrath. Even though she was only five feet and three inches (about 160 centimeters), she seemed very tall and menacing at the moment. “I have never, ever heard such the most childish, not to mention the stupidest, most immature quarrel between two seventh years before. And disgrace and shame on you two - why Potter and Evans, you two are Head Boy and Girl…Twenty points off Gryffindor and you two have a week worth's detention. Together. Maybe it will teach you to respect each other - behave the way a worthy Head Boy and Girl are supposed to behave.” Ochere said in a low, calm, dangerous voice radiating with extreme fury. It seemed, for a few minutes that time had stopped and everyone was still as statues. The two were numb with shock and it took a while for them register what the Potions teacher had issued. When James and Lily finally comprehended what she said, they both open their mouths to protest; but just glared at each other instead. “Class dismissed,” Giving one last icy glare at James, Lily stalked out of the classroom. She felt footsteps approach behind her and had no desire to talk to anyone. Even if it was Kris and Em. “Whoever's behind me, I suggest you ran away,” Lily said stonily, and she heard a merry laugh despite the fact most students would have ran away. “Temper, Lily, Temper,” The cheery voice piped up and the Head Girl turned around to see no other than Chet. I should have known…the only person in this school who doesn't run away…maybe except a few. “What now Chet?” She asked wearily. He smiled warmly at her, and Lily couldn't help to let out a small smile also. “You smiled,” He said with a hint of slyness. “Oh, you - you -” Lily began, pointing her finger at him, grinning. “Yes?” Chet asked patiently, approaching her closer as he kept on smiling. Smiling like an idiot. She burst out in laughter. “Are impossible to be mad at,” Lily finished, shaking her head. And she was right. Chet was an optimistic boy whose main gift seemed to be making people laugh, have fun, and want to be around him. He seemed to love everything, well, maybe except exams and homework. So enthusiastic, so full of energy, and said everything with meaning, spirit, gusto with gestures. “Heh,” Was all Chet said, scratching his head in modesty and he then slung an arm around Lily. “So how `bout Lils? I could take you to a real nice view - shows a piece of God's great land,” He suggested, his tone eager and continued on, “It really is beautiful, it's the best ever! You can see the lake below, the sky so blue, the sun shining down and trees all over —” “Alright, alright Mr. Professor - just relax,” Lily laughed. “I'll go, I'll go.” “'Kay then. See ya Saturday. Make sure to bring your friends! They'll appreciate it too!” Chet said brightly, taking his arms off her shoulders as he walked ahead; waving as he did. Lily waved back, smiling, and shook her head once more. Aye… “It's the best ever with lakes, and sky…Oh my!” A voice mimicked and Lily could easily guess who it was. Sirius Black. Whirling around, she sent a cold, freezing gaze at the four boys. “Black, Potter. Sod off. Chet's better than you two will ever be.” “I never said anything,” James protested sourly and then with a total change of attitude, he dismissed his hand, as if he pretended Lily was invisible. “Whatever. Come on guys, It's a waste of times talking to Evans anyways.” He walked off, with Sirius and Peter following him silently. “Come on Moony!” Peter called impatiently, motioning him over. Remus gave Lily an apprehensive look. Moony? Is that what they call him? How strange. “Sorry `bout that Lily,” He apologized. Lily smiled at him. “You didn't do anything. But I still don't understand why you hang out with them imbeciles,” Lily shook her head. The seventeen-year-old stared at her meaningfully, shaking his head. “They've done more for me than I could ever want in my life,” He answered solemnly and quietly, then ran up to catch up his friends. She frowned; what in the heck did Remus Lupin mean by that? As if out of nowhere, Kris playfully slapped Lily's shoulder as Emily waved her hand in front of the red-head's face. “I'm fine guys,” Lily snapped, feeling rather annoyed. Kris grinned. “Hey, if you like Remus too, that's fine with us.” “I do not like Remus; he's a friend, just like Chet. By the way, did you know tomorrow Chet wanted me to tell you guys he wanted to take us to some place?” “Not another one! Guess it's our turn now.” Emily groaned, but grinned helplessly. Chet took almost everyone to different places he found…in the school or outside. Lily was pretty sure Chet was catching up to their knowledge of where all the school's secret passageways were and all that. But the trio enjoyed Chet's showing-around tour…especially with his vivacious commenting. And they were all looking forward to his next one. * A week's detention with James Potter. Lily couldn't decide if this was good or not. A week to be alone hopefully with James…to try and impress him…or a week's worth of quarreling. Sighing, she trudged her way towards the Gryffindor head's office. Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned around to see James; who glared daggers at her and turned his head away; who had chose to ignore her. However, he looked worried as well... Okay, so a week's detention with Potter is bad, at the grouchy mood he's in. She thought miserably and pushed the door open. “Mr. Potter, Ms. Evans,” Professor McGonagall greeted them with a stern look and her usual icy glare. Lily tried to look innocent as James gave a quiet snort after seeing the look on her face. She turned around and glowered at him. “I am disappointed in you two...I was not expecting two students in my house, whom are Head Girl and Boy to act in such a childish manner inside a classroom, especially when a teacher is talking in the middle of their teachings. You will have detention with Hagrid this afternoon. Professor Ochere requested that you two spend your detentions together all week so you can work out some sort of truce —” James snorted again at that. The strict Transfiguration teacher narrowed her eyes at him and continued. “And I trust that you two will work one out by the end of the week.” There was a loud on the door. Sharp, loud, impatient raps against the wooden door. Lily felt a sense of disgust and dread. It was Filch. “Come in Argus,” Professor McGonagall commanded and a dirt, ragged figure entered with Mrs. Norris at his side, her yellow eyes looking at Lily and James. For once, it seemed the two's thoughts were same: If I could only kick her just once… The caretaker gave a curt nod and turned his eyes to the pair, his eyes glittering with delightful malice. Lily knew that detention was going to be something unpleasant. “I'll take `em now.” He said gruffly and obediently, they followed. “Shame…shame…” Filch tsked, looking at the two with great distaste. “I wonder how you two got picked as Head Boy and Girl. If they'd only let me use the old punishments back again, you'd be obedient as a mouse.” He said, as Lily sighed, bored, who had heard Filch's complaint about the school's punishment millions of times and James had an odd look on his face when Filch mentioned `mouse'. Filch glared at her. “You can be bored now…but when you get to the Forbidden Forest, you won't be.” He leered, and saw James whose look was as if he didn't mind about the forest. When they reached outside of Hagrid's hut, Lily looked at it knowingly. Though the trio were close to Hagrid, they weren't as close…say unknown to the Head Girl, that her so and his two friends were. “Took yeh long enough Filch, I want ter hurry an' git this through,” Hagrid spoke, looking irritated. “Lily, James.” He acknowledged, turning his head as if he had just noticed them now. Lily smiled and gave a wave and turned to look at him. She was a bit surprised to see James grinning with a sense of friendliness. He must know Hagrid as well… “Have fun in the forest,” Filch sneered and walked back to the castle with the lantern he had been holding. “Oh, don't worry, we will,” She called out sarcastically after him. Hagrid chuckled. “Now, now Lily. We'll be pickin' Mooncalves dung an' best ter to do it quick befer the sun rises. We're lucky `cause it's a full moon ternight an' we'll get to see `em dancin'. They're shy too so be very quiet ter not scare `em away.” Lily felt like barfing and turned to see that James looked appalled. They were going to pick Mooncalves dung? “It's not that bad, yeh'll be wearin' gloves, here,” Hagrid handed them brown gardeners' gloves and a bag. “An' yeh'll be needin' a bag to collect their dung. It'll do well to the plants and school garden I'm growin'…a good fer'ilizer — makes them herbs and gardens nice an' strong. Come on, now. Follow me.” He walked inside the forest and James strode forward. Groaning, she put on the gloves and followed. “I cannot believe we're picking Mooncalves dung,” She muttered aloud, her face sullen and ashen at the thought. “Better believe it Evans. You can't always be nice and clean and all hoity-toity.” He answered quietly, turning to look at her with the usual loathing. She cringed at it but recovered quickly. “Look who's talking Mr. Potter…as if you weren't hoity-toity yourself. Your family name is quite well known to the wizarding world.” Lily retorted and James suddenly looked uncomfortable, as he looked away. “As a Potter, I'm expected to uphold the family name.” He mumbled stiffly, as sort of finality in the conversation. Why had he looked so uncomfortable? Clearly, it was a dangerous topic to tread on. She would keep that in mind. Looking around the Forbidden forests, there were the dark, looming trees overhead that seemed to bind each other as a forbidding wall. There was no inch of light except Hagrid's lantern, along with James's wand lighting. The trees seemed to be unfriendly, glowering at them, letting no moonlight through even the smallest gaps. There were bare patches of grass here and there, with dirt mixed with pebbles and stones. Out of the blue, there was a distant werewolf howling. Then a dog barking sounded faintly. James looked nervous and tense, fidgeting; he kept looking back at the castle. Noticing this, Lily frowned, studying the bloke she had a flame for. Was he afraid of werewolves? It was a while before they reached the Mooncalves. Shushing them quietly, Hagrid led them to hide in the bushes to observe as Mooncalves shyly came out of there burrows and started dancing. Her attention was immediately captured, and even James for the moment seemed to be intrigued. Their dance, no doubt, was mystical and fascinating — an opportunity of a lifetime chance. Feeling a thrill through her soul, Lily was tempted to touch one of them. The dance was unlike any other dance she'd ever seen — it looked like it was improvised right on the spot, with the gentle twirls and complicated stampings that left marks on the soft meadow. “Wow,” Lily breathed softly, looking at the Mooncalves in awe. “Ain't it wonderful…beautiful dance,” Hagrid said, sounding rather tear-eyed. “The markings sort of leave a pattern of a circle,” James commented, his hazel eyes glued to the dancing creatures. “So this is what I've seen sometimes on farmer's Wheatfield,” Lily whispered and James cocked an eyebrow. “Sorry?” “The markings...I've seen them in a farmer's Wheatfield sometimes.” She repeated, and Hagrid nodded knowingly. “Muggles often get bewil'ered of the marks.” Hagrid joined in and there was another sound of a werewolf howling. Turning to James for his respond, she noticed he was tense again and he was clenching his fists, his face pale and worried. What was wrong with James? Frightened by the noise, the Mooncalves blindly ran back into their burrows. “They run fast…they got scared…” Lily said quietly — the enchantment was broken now. “Now that all of `em are gone, le's go pick the dung. Come on Lily, James.” Hagrid ordered and picking up their bags, there were a vast majority of the dung scattered around the meadow. This is absolutely nasty… It took a long time for the three of them to pick up the dung. Much to her surprise, Lily discovered that the silver dung didn't smell like anything at all; and to this she was thankful. Easily, she picked them up and dropped it into the bag at an easygoing pace while James still looked like he was under pressure and stress and went on picking furiously fast yet carelessly. “Good job both of yer. It'll do good ter the school. Wash up, alrigh'?” Hagrid said, taking their gloves and bags filled with dung. Noticing the caring hint in his tone, Lily smiled. “Don't worry Hagrid.” “Good nigh'.” He waved and went back inside his hut. Walking back up to the castle, she yawned and looked at her watch. It was past midnight and very late. James, on the other hand, ran towards the other direction…towards the Whomping Willow. Why is James running towards the Whomping Willow? Not to get himself killed is it? She shook her head. It wasn't really her business but she couldn't help wondering. Werewolves and the Whomping Willow…interesting. I think I'll read about werewolves tomorrow… * “I tell you, it was weird!” Lily hissed to Emily and Kris the next morning in breakfast, her mouth full as she chewed her food rapidly. “Don't talk with your mouth full,” Kris automatically corrected. Lily glared. “Everytime there were sounds of werewolves howling, James was all fidgety and pale, and it disturbed him.” Her two friends' eyes widened slightly. Lily was annoyed. “What?” “You actually said James instead of Potter!” Emily exclaimed, brushing back a strand of her loose blonde hair. “That isn't the point! Stop drifting away from the topic of discussion here!” Lily snapped in her Head Girl tone. “Alright, alright — calm down. Maybe he has werewolf-phobia I dunno,” Kris responded, shrugging. “I don't think it's a really big deal.” Emily nodded. “Emily, being the philosophical one out of all of us, I would of thought you would at least side with me on what was happening! Don't you have some theory or - or a huge lecture on your opinion? I mean, he was running towards the Whomping Willow for Merlin's sake!” Lily bantered, waving a napkin in the air. Lowering her arm, the Asian dame rolled her eyes. “Lily, it's not your business and it's not ours,” Emily said gently, her blue eyes trying to pacify her opinionated friend. “Look Lils, we can talk about this `James and the werewolf phobia' later.” Kris said softly, which was rather unusual for Lily to hear since the Keeper always talked in a loud voice. Somehow, this did made her calm done and switch topics. “Fine,” She sighed. “What about that prank on Vasser?” She asked, turning her emerald eyes to the girls huddling at the end of the table. “Meeting tomorrow night at the usual place,” Kris whispered, leaning forward on the table. Lily and Emily nodded. “Finally Ms. Plotter-and-Planner has an ideas?” Emily teased, grinning. “Guess so.” Lily said, giving their friend a teasing look. All thoughts about werewolves vanished from Lily's mind while trekking out for a splendid view a bit beyond Hogsmeade. It was rather a long hike but the three girls didn't feel as much tired as they would be. Chet was ahead of them with Kris bounding next followed by Emily and Lily who were conversing in normal tones. “Alright, we're here!” Chet announced, suddenly stopping as he turned around to face the girls. Kris smiled broadly, her brown eyes feasting on the scenery laid out before them. “Thank Merlin, my legs were about to fall off,” Lily sighed in relief, bending down with her palms of her hands on the top of her thighs. “Oh come on Lils, this was just a warm-up.” Chet said, grinning like a Cheshire cat. “Besides, who can resist all this beauty, this fantastic view —” He waved his hands around them. “That God has ever created? Just take a look at it! Look at all this! It's the best, don't you think?” Indeed, it was one of Mother Nature's masterpieces. The sky was drenched in sky blue with flecks of clouds that could be mistaken for pillows. There were cliffs that were draped by lichens and tiny smoky, cotton flowers scattered with patches of grass. A ring of pine and blue spruce trees surrounded the glistening, glittering lake, like a Fairy's Mirror. The Indian sun blessed all things, its gentle rays dancing with the refreshing breeze. A waterfall slid down over the cliffs and trees in their season's dress. “It is beautiful,” Emily admitted. Kris nodded, twirling around as if she was a little girl again, the singing wind playing with her hair. “One can take a breather up here. It's like playing Quidditch.” The Asian girl murmured as Chet nodded enthusiastically. “Nice change of pace, one can get a little quiet peace.” “Amen to that,” Emily agreed. “Come on! Let's go inside, nature's welcoming us!” Chet exclaimed. “Ladies first.” He grinned, giving a bow to Kris then to Emily as the two girls walked in. “Lily, aren't you coming? Are you actually going to miss all this?” “I guess I'm just tired,” She admitted, her face showed that she was well worn-out. Along with Head Girl duties and other things, Lily Evans was a busy girl. And James…with Head Boy duties, being the Quidditch Captain and Hogwarts, he must be busier than I am. A flicker of messy jet-black hair and face drifted across her mind. “Can't be tired yet! Here, I'll walk with you.” Chet said his voice still with boundless energy. Lily found herself wondering where the source of all his energy was. His never ending tiredness made her burst out in laughter. Chet smiled. “See? You'll be up and ready in no time.” “Thanks, Mr. I-never-relax,” Lily said, smiling warmly at him. Without a word, he slung his arm over her shoulder and talked on while she listened. He seemed to have a gift who could just talk on but when one listened, one would never get sick of hearing his gab. “…There's two guys. The first guy takes a look at a cup of water and says, “It's half-full,” The other guy takes a lot it and says, “It's half-empty.” ” He said simply as they were nearer to the waterfall. “So?” Lily frowned, arching an eyebrow. “Think about it.” He insisted, and left her pondering about it while he swiftly walked up to the front to remove some boulders behind the waterfall as they stood on top of a dusty cliff. The redhead was deep in thought and didn't notice Emily's hand waving in front of her face. “Come on, Chet's leading us to this rock hideout he recently found.” She said, pulling Lily's hands away. Lily could hear muffled voices of Kris and Chet beneath her feet as she climbed down in the cool, damp place underneath the rocks. “Whoah, it's like a secret passageway!” She heard Kris exclaim. “Isn't it great? Reminds me of the ancient pyramids in Egypt.” Chet said, flooding the place with light with his wand. “Careful you guys, there's bunch of rocks here and there.” The Keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team warned. Lily grinned mischievously. This was a perfect hideout! Thanks Chet, she mentally noted. But it wasn't to be unless they were out on Hogsmeade weekends. If only we had some kind of invisibility cloak, we would be able to go wherever we wanted to! The old classroom would have to do. “It's kind of small,” Emily said, crouching down. “It's a cool place though,” Lily spoke, joining her friends closer to the dirt wall mound with stones. Kris looked down at her watch. “We should be going back. I need a refill of those sugar quills at Zonko's.” Kris muttered, after giving a glance back at the place as she walked up the hole. Lily didn't want to leave. Chet seemed that he didn't want to go either. Emily walked up the hole, careful not to kick down any pebbles lest that it would hurt the two. “Much as this is a great hideout, we should be going back.” Chet spoke, as they heard the two girls trudging back towards the school. “Yeah,” Was all she said, picking up a stone. “It's quiet and peaceful here. I mean, it's like a little cozy, comfort place where you can actually think you know? Like Kris feels free and bliss when she's flying in the air on her broomstick.” She said softly, as Chet patiently waited for her as he stood up. Suddenly, as an adult would often speak of “teenage mood swings”, he grinned cheerfully, the excited persona coming back again. “Don't worry Lily, I'll take on another tour again…there's more of beauty around ol' England that I can't spot!” She laughed. “I bet there isn't. Can't wait `til you show me the next one.” She said, winking at the American as they climbed back up, running up to Kris and Emily. Chapter Four 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Chapter Five Project 731: The Lily and James Swap Year 7 Review Thanks: Check out the replies in the review section. Thank you all, and luv ya! Chapter Four When Lily woke up from bed, it was not a pleasant experience. Especially when she felt tiny weights peppering all over her body. Groaning, she sleepily opened one eye, and looked down to herself. What was all these while splatters — that felt all `yucky'? And the scent — it was very familiar to...No, it couldn't have been — “Bat bogey!” Stifling a scream, Lily climbed out of the bed to find her nightgown wore plastered all over with them. Literally, they were stuck to her body! It was useless trying to ever take them off by hand. “Oh Gods Lily, what happened?” A horrified-sounding voice broke in. It was Kris, with her hair flying from her face due to tossing around in her sleep. On a normal morning, Lily would have laughed and tease her best friend about it. But today was no normal morning. “Someone,” snarled Lily, “thought it was funny to gob me with bat bogey…” Emily, who had woken up from Lily's dangerous growl, winced sympathetically. Kris's brows snapped together. “Vasser!” Lily nodded furiously in agreement. “Obviously! I mean, who else hates me as much?” “Snape. Potter.” Emily suggested. Lily scoffed. “Snape? He doesn't even have the brains to even pull up with a bat bogey hex. And Potter? Him — pull a prank?” She asked with disbelief, and was close to laughing. “I have to say Em, that the idea of James Potter breaking into our dorm — in which he couldn't have — and pulling on a prank, not to mention, very early in the morning is quite absurd.” Kris said. Last night, they had met up in the Room of Requirement to discuss their prank on Vasser and her clique; not returning until midnight. “Maybe…” Emily looked skeptical. “You never know…” “Em, trust me, if it was James who pulled the prank, I would dance as a clown on top of the professor's table.” Kris retorted. Emily grinned, arching an eyebrow. “You sound pretty sure, Miss Park,” “She should be,” Lily cut in. “I'm going to take a shower.” The muggleborn felt anger bubbling inside her, threatening to erupt like a volcano. That no good, dirty, arsed-up Vasser! Her little friends were no better either. It was a good thing McClatchy and Pekes hadn't woken up. And I bet Vasser put McClatchy and Pekes up to it too! She thought, clenching her fist. “I didn't want any trouble with you this year Vasser, but you left me no choice. Well, let's see how you like your next surprise…” She muttered under breath. ---- History of Magic was not pleasant either. Lily recalled the `catfight' she and Vasser had in the corridors after breakfast. `A pair of black braids flew in rapidly when Lily and her friends got up from the table. Suddenly they were showered with indignant, furious shouts. `“How dare you! This morning — you've gone too far Evans! And I've bet Park and Leigh helped you on this too!”' A tall girl with frizzy golden hair streaked with red cried. It was Ashton. `Lily glared. `“What are you talking about?”' Emily crossed her hands whilst Kris stepped forward protectively. `Vasser put on a face of disbelief. `“Funny you should say, as I recall eet was you who deecided ma —”' her voice lowered. `“Underwear should dangle outzide of ze dorm door!”' The Keeper of Gryffindor Quidditch team grinned delightedly. Lily and Emily exchanged looks. Why didn't we think of that? Lily thought. `“We don't know who could have done it; otherwise, we would have awarded that person a medal.”' hissed Kris, bringing her wand out warily. `“And it's funny that you should be talking Vasser. You needn't to act as if I've done everything wrong… the prank you pulled on me wasn't particularly enjoyable either!”' exclaimed Lily, brushing a strand of dark red hair out of her face. `An expression of fury changed into puzzlement. Vasser blinked. “What?” she asked innocently. `Emily rolled her eyes. Lily gave a snort. `“Don't give that `Blow me!' me look,” she shot back. The French raised an eyebrow in further confusion. `“It's just another one of our expressions,”' murmured Pekes to Vasser. `“And you two —” Lily continued, pointing at Pekes and McClatchy. `“Bet you had fun with the hex, didn't you?”' `Pekes put on a disgusted look. `“You're just talking rubbish.”' `“Dipsticks,”' Lily heard Kris mutter under her breath. `“I wouldn't be calling the pot calling pot kettle black!”' The Asian girl stalked away, as did Emily did silently, pondering. `Vassser impartially glared after the trio. `“Zis isn't over yet, Evans,”' she growled. `Lily smiled cruelly, crossing her arms. `“Who said it was?”' concluding her parting statement archly, she gave a mysterious smirk and walked out.' A poke in the shoulder snapped Lily out her thoughts. “Hey, Lils!” Irritated, she turned around. “What?” “Your dear Captain,” smiled Kris roguishly at the furiously blushing face. “is holding a Quidditch tryout today after classes. Tag along with me?” Lily grinned, trying not to flush. “'Course,” Kris grinned back broadly. “Make sure to tell Em over there before Binns bores her to death.” Silently laughing, Lily tapped her fair-haired friend. “Hm?” Emily asked groggily. “Kris wants us to come along with her to Quidditch tryout today — you know how Potter requires every one of the players to appear at the tryouts.” remarked Lily with a roll of her eyes. “Gah. I wish it was happening right now,” moaned Emily, burying her head in her arms. Lily nodded with exaggerated boredom. “No kidding. Even Snape would be better company than Binns.” Kris gave a mock-gasp. “Lily Evans! How could you say such a thing?” Lily grinned and rolled her eyes. “At least we could tease him — or humiliate him at some way —” She stopped as James's words echoed in her mind. `Maybe I don't but I know it's not gonna be a girl who plays stupid pranks on people, harassing innocents and torturing people just because either they're bored or are so sensitive about insults.' She shook her head. “Never mind,” Kris cocked an eyebrow, as Emily exchanged silent looks with the Asian dame. What had made Lily stop in her words like that? The trio lapsed into silence. Suddenly, something that felt round hit the back of Lily's head. Irritated, she immediately whirled around, trying to find the one who had pelted her with…well, whatever it was. With a freezing scorn, she tried in what seemed vain at first to whoever had done that. Chet's hand waved merrily in the air, giving her a wink. Giving him a mock-glare, he had started to mouth something at her. She frowned, and mouthed back. What? He pointed beneath her desk. Ducking her head, Lily's hand grabbed onto a parchment ball. Ah. So that was what he had hit her with. Hey Lils, I have an idea for Halloween. -C Lily wrote back vigorously. She had a Prefect meeting today about Halloween, the decorations, the food, etc. And I gladly welcome it. What is it? -L She tossed it back, as James, who had noticed the two throwing the same parchment ball gave Lily a look that she knew well as: You-are-so-immature look. She shrugged nonchantly, trying to look a picture of unconcern, but was failing miserably. For the decorations, what if you hung like, muggle costumes of trick-o-treating? And I could help to get the food. I know a great place to get food. -C He sent it rolling on the ground. She picked it up. I think that's a good idea, Chet. I'll be sure to mention it at the meeting today. Tell me what the place is though, I'm curious. -L Chet wrote back quickly with: The house elves' kitchen. -C She turned around, grinning widely. She mouthed: How do you where that house elves' kitchen was? He didn't answer, but responded by grinning back, twirling his finger around as if to tell her to turn around and sit back down. Lily stuck her tongue out back at him before settling down. Kris poked her shoulder. “What was that all about?” she whispered, her expression unreadable. Shrugging, Lily gave her the ragged parchment ball. ---- Lily turned into the classroom where the meeting held. And for the first time, she was actually early. Early. It was a miracle. James Potter seemed to have been thinking along the same lines. “You're on time, for the first time in your life, Evans,” He greeted her coolly, his arms crossed as he leaned leisurely on a chair. “So I am — but perhaps I've never been on time because I wanted to spend less time with you, Potter.” She sneered, but was actually thinking the exact opposite. He glared at her. “As if I wanted to spend any more minute with you, Evans,” She sent him a sweet smile, an all-innocent look on her face. “Of course you do, Jamesie,” She said in a sickly, mocking tone that was often spoken to babies by women who were fond of babies. He opened his mouth but the Prefects began shuffling in, and he stood up determinedly and immediately began speaking. “Halloween's coming in a few weeks, any ideas?” He asked promptly. “A masquerade ball!” exclaimed an excited female voice. “Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore wanted no balls this year,” James reminded the Prefect, as she put on a disappointed face. “Any other ideas?” “Actually, a very good friend of mine contributed the idea of hanging muggle Halloween costumes in the Great Hall,” Lily spoke up, deciding that it was time that she asserted herself into the conversation. “I disagree,” a smooth voice answered. “This is a wizarding school. Why should we hang up filthy mud —” The Slytherin Prefect started, but before Lily could retort, someone had gotten before her. “As a Prefect, I would have expected a better choice of words, Mr. Snyder. Especially when I could do more than just writing you up for that, as it is my duty as a Head Boy.” James's calm, cool voice interrupted Snyder as silence befell the room. Lily, with slight surprise, turned incredulously to James, who did not look her way. Even though his words were collected, the anger and the smoldering fury of his face and eyes shocked her. She didn't know that he would have felt the anger of hearing that word as much as she did. Perhaps there was more to James Potter then she thought she knew. “Any objections?” Just by the tone of his voice, the Prefects knew better than to object. “Good. Some of the teachers will be helping with the decorations. They've set up some rules, which I take all of the Prefects know, especially knowing what not to hang —” He turned to Lily, and she glanced back with an innocent look on her face. “They want the traditional decorations but are quite willing to accept any other ideas for it.” They nodded, and Lily spoke, feeling that it was time she asserted herself in the conversation again. “Anybody willing to work on decorations?” She asked; holding a clipboard with her quill paused. Few hands rose up. “Alright, that goes to the Hufflepuff prefects,” Scribbling down the names, she looked up again. “Now that's settled…let's talk about the food…” At the corner of her eye, she saw that James looked strangely eager. * “You have no idea how hungry I am,” Lily announced, looking wistful. “All that lovely food descriptions in the meeting made by aw'fly hungry,” Kris's stomach growled. “My stomach begs your pardon,” “I think you're losing a battle, Lily dear,” Emily laughed, as the two joined in. Lily pretended to look offended, forgetting her hunger for a moment. “Excuse me? I think you're thinking something wrong here!” The trio walked over to the table, smiling broadly at the delicious food laid out in front of them. Immediately, Lily and Kris began to dig in, stuffing themselves in. “How ladylike you two are,” giggled Emily, as she daintily picked up a buttered roll. “Of course we are,” said Kris, her mouth full of chicken. “We're the best paragons to follow.” Lily waved her chicken in the air with approval as if to say, `Here, here!' A boy slid in across of them. “Hello girls. How are we doing this evening?” greeted Chet, with the usual smile on his face. Lily looked up from her plate and nodded, who began to gnaw at her chicken. “I see that your appetite isn't quite finished yet.” Kris grinned, her mouth empty of the chicken. “Nope, but this just shows how ladylike we are, right?” Chet nodded, straight faced, but it was clear that he was chuckling inside. “Yes, the Queen would be proud.” “Our mothers would,” Lily and Kris chimed in, and looked at each other, looking satisfied. “What's the schedule today?” He asked, placing black pudding into his plate. Lily grinned, remembering his reaction to seeing the black pudding. And now he was obsessed with it. “Well, we have to go tag along with Kris to come see the open spots for the team,” answered Emily. Chet looked mildly interested. He and Kris had a debate about whose sport was better: Quodpot and Quidditch. “What spots?” “Beater and seeker,” responded Kris. “I hope Jack McMarine gets the spot for Beater. He's only in fourth year, but he's really good. That's the good thing about going to Quidditch tryouts — James let us have a say about whom to let in the team. After all, we want to kick the Slytherin's arses.” Lily grinned. “Without a doubt,” “Damn straight,” Chet added, with a wink at Lily. For a minute, Lily thought Kris had a put-out look, but shook her head as it was rapidly replaced with a laughing look. I must have imaging things. A lone, tawny owl swooped down from the hall, handing Emily's regular subscription for the Daily Prophet. The blonde picked it up, unrolling the newspaper as she read while munching on her food placidly. “What's on the news, Em?” Kris asked, curious. Emily tensed. “The attacks on the muggleborns continued,” She said, with a cautious look at Lily. Lily turned pale, not noticing that James, Sirius, Remus and Peter seemed to be closely listening to their conversation. “Can I see that?” requested Lily, her voice strangely calm. Emily wordlessly handed the newspaper over to her friend. “`YOU-KNOW-WHO STRIKES AGAIN WITH THE MUGGLEBORNS!'” She read aloud to herself. Worried, Lily chewed her lower lip after she had finished reading the article. Little Whinging was the town the attacks were assaulted in…so far, she hadn't received any death warrants from the ministry…yet. She needed to send an owl to her parents. They had to okay. “I'm going to write a quick letter to my parents,” She murmured, standing up. The worrying kept on nagging in her mind. Catching her friends' worried looks, she shook her head. “Don't worry `bout me — it's just a quick letter. I just wanted to make sure of something…” She trailed off, walking towards the Gryffindor Tower. Was her parents okay? No one was hurt, right? The Daily Prophet hadn't helped…they never mentioned any names. Petunia's claims and shrieks filled her mind. Was Petunia right? She had acted as if their parents had already died — that thought made Lily cold with dread… `“Do you see the harm you've done, freak? Now that you had to become and be a witch, you've put the whole family in danger! You're supposed to be the `brains' of this family — hadn't you seen this coming?”' Lily shook her head. Don't think these stupid thoughts, Lily — you know they aren't true. She laughed aloud bitterly. They hadn't even gotten along before she had received her letter to Hogwarts. They shared a room, which was worse. Please, please, God, please let them be alright. She prayed silently, refusing to see that was even a possibility. ---- When it came to Quidditch practice, Lily had acted as if that everything that had happened at dinner didn't happen at all. Chet, Kris, and Emily had all tried to get word out of her, but failed. Lily envied Kris's ability of hiding her emotions. She was quite good at when she wanted to. Being an optimist, she refused to acknowledge the possibility, even if she already had by sending an owl. It was cloudy evening, there was James, standing in the middle of the field with his commanding voice and his extremely messy hair ruffled by the wind. She smiled. Just looking at him made her feel better. There was Kris, and the rest of Gryffindor's team standing next to him, silently. “Do see Jack McMarine?” Emily whispered, wrapping her scarf around her neck tightly. “I think that's him…the average height guy with red hair,” She remarked, gesturing her hands toward that direction. “He doesn't look like he could do much, but I suppose I shouldn't judge on looks,” observed Chet, who stood next to Lily. At first, Lily had silently agreed with him, but then again, with Kris lamenting on how good the `little guy' was, she was beginning to be convinced. Her Asian friend was a strong debater, serious situations or no. James had seemed to be finished with his speech, and each of the tryouters was off flying in the air with the broomstick. Though she would never admit to anybody, Lily was afraid of heights. Not even her two best friends knew of her fear of heights. They had assumed that Lily just didn't like flying. Period. “Have you noticed how the Quidditch uniforms make people look really good?” A voice giggled behind them. Yeah, especially James, Lily thought as Chet gave her a curious look at her dreamy expression. “Hey — Lily, `d you want to join me and Kris had a Quodpot match this weekend?” A voice cut in into her train of thoughts. “Huh?” Lily's spun around. “Join Kris and me at Quodpot,” He repeated, smiling at her gently. A smile began to spread across her face, a mischievous glint in her eye. “A date with my friend?” She asked, excited. He laughed. “Nah. We couldn't settle our differences by words, so we're settling them with action. The only way to go for it,” Emily shook her head, taking her attention off the tryouts. She, like Kris, was obsessed with Quidditch, but refrained from taking any part in the American's and Kris's debate. “Not that again,” She groaned. Chet looked at Emily, grinning. “Kris likes `em,” She nodded. “True — but that's Kris for you. She says they energize her.” They laughed, and Chet turned his mysterious cocoa eyes at Lily's green ones. “So, what say Lils?” He grinned. She shook her head. “Don't like flying,” “Scared?” He smirked, teasing her as he poked her shoulder with his index finger. She put on a mock-offended look. “Me? Scared? You, of all people, Chet, have to kidding me.” She teased back, waggling her finger at him. “Of course not,” He wrapped his right arm around her shoulders. “I would never want to suffer Lily Evan's wrath. No man who's alive and sane would ever want to.” Lily, still playing around, pushed his arm off as she planted her hands on her hips. “Are you mocking me, Charles Tolchoose? Better not be,” She added, growling. Chet shielded his face with his hand, as if the sight of her blinded him. “Please, no, spare me, O' Warrior. I only plead innocence. Take the truth of my words!” He exclaimed dramatically, speaking in a British accent. “Oh quiet, you two and stop flirting,” admonished Emily. Exchanging evil looks, Chet and Lily both spoke, “Yes, dear Mother,” Emily, rolling her eyes, pushed the two off the bench before she glued her blue eyes to the tryouts. A/N: I am sooo sorry that I took such a long time updating Chapter Five. I was suffering from writer's block, the terrible inflicted disease that was bestowed upon me. Ahem. Hope you guys can forgive me. And in return, I hand you delicious chocolate chip cookies. I've tried again with the French accent, which isn't too good, but I tried my best. I'll gladly welcome any French picker. Here's a disclaimer for all of you to read, as I quote another author on ff.net: Don't own it. Don't like it? Don't read it. Hope you liked this chapter! 10 -->
