Harry and Hermione are living together and though frequently questioned by the public, in a strictly plutonic sense. Their lives change though, when a small article leads them to the adoption of a wonderful child. The adoption requires a marriage license. Like anyone else the child can see that they belong together, and Harry and Hermione aren't quite ready for the things he/she will do to get them to do more than obtain a license...

Through Innocent Eyes
Chapter One
Hermione Granger quietly sat at her desk in the Department of Misused Muggle Artifacts. Honestly, she had never dreamed she would end up working in this department. However, it had made sense to take the job after Mr. Weasley had urged her to take the job when there was an opening. Hermione was perfect for the job since she understood muggles so well (being from a muggle family herself). She had of course explained that she planned to move into a more advanced field afterwards, but Hermione has to admit to herself that she liked her daily routine of filing, raids, and the numerous lectures she gave on muggle items such as hair dryers. Since she had taken the job, the summer after graduation from Hogwarts, Hermione was absolutely certain she had found her place in society, and was quite happy with it. Her job was normal unlike that of her best friend...and current crush.
'Oh, current is such a lie’, Hermione thought to herself, ‘Current was the 4th year Yule Ball.’ Her crush had become such a big part of her everyday life. Her body was as accustomed to her crush as the air she breathed. Harry Potter was not the mysteriously handsome wizard she spotted at a Hogwarts gala and found herself steeling glimpses of beyond the pumpkin juice bowl. Harry Potter was someone she saw everyday and dreamt of every night.
Hermione wasn't doing anything particular this Saturday. In fact, she was only supposed to be there for an hour meeting, about what time their lunch break should be moved to. So, after the meeting, Hermione was free to go since she never worked on Saturdays, and the meeting was impartial to her, since she packed her lunch.
When it ended, Hermione returned to her desk to find that a messy co-worker had left a copy of The Quibbler on her desk. Obviously just tossing it wherever they felt it should land. Then again, maybe it was a blessing. The article she was reading was unlike any she had thought The Quibbler could write. Usually, its articles were routinely written by paparazzi speaking of the latest gimmick or the most recent sighting of Gilderoy Lockhart. This article was different though. It was about orphans and the lack of adoption rate in the Wizarding world because parents were too proud to give a home and love to someone who wasn't their flesh and blood. Even scared perhaps... The article listed many suggestions to improve the historically low rate of adoption and the high rate of orphaned children. There were many children around the age of nine and ten whose parents had been killed in the Second War. They had only been four or five at the time and Hermione was personally touched. She, herself, had her parents taken away from her in the war.
'I'm twenty-three years old and I have a stable job, and a flat of my own. Well, I share it with Harry. But there has to be a way I can help these kids. It's completely unfair that they should have to live without a family when most of them, remember what it was like to be really loved. Maybe I could share my love with them, if only one of them...oh but what about Harry?’ Immediately, Hermione picked up the magazine and headed for the elevator. Hermione always discussed everything with Harry. Many of her attempts to help Harry during the war had ended in someone getting hurt, and from then on, Hermione had promised Harry that she would talk to him about anything that was troubling her. Harry, himself, had mainly been concerned that she would end up hurting herself.
"Department of Magical Law Enforcement please," Hermione said after entering the elevator. Down a maze of glum hallways, was the Aurors Division. Quickly, she made her way to her friend's private office. On the door, in bold black print, it said, “Harry J. Potter Assistant Chief.”
Hermione was very proud of her friend’s accomplishments. He had become a successful Auror and had managed to drown out the bad memories of his past.
"Who is it?" Harry called, when Hermione knocked on his door.
"One of your fans! Can I have your autograph?" Hermione said in the fake voice of an average, overexcited, teenage girl. Smiling, she opened the door and walked in before he could reply.
"Oh, it's my lucky day. You just happen to be my favorite fan, Ms. Granger," Harry said smiling as she sat down on the other side of his desk.
Harry looked strikingly handsome, in the black robes and cloak uniform, all Aurors wore with a badge to show their superiority. His hair had never quite lost their messiness and the spark in those gorgeous green eyes had never faded either. He had become muscular and much taller, but stayed a bit lanky. The twenty-three year old Harry Potter was a very attractive man, and was on the walls of teenage witches throughout Great Britain.
"I'm glad to hear that, but your favorite fan has a bit of info we need to discuss," Hermione said playing along for a while. Harry always enjoyed when she came into his office to talk and hang around.
"Oh really?"
"Yes, it seems there have been multiple requests for a new photo shoot. The old posters just aren't selling. The club insists that you need to do some new posters. Total shockers so that you really get noticed."
"Well, you're the director. Set up the time and place and, I’ll come in my birthday suit," Harry answered and Hermione blushed, not expecting him to answer so confidently.
"You know very well I'm not the director and that if you say that too loud, she'll be here faster than you can say Quibbler," Hermione said, a bit unhappy that she had lost the teasing battle.
"Ah, my intelligent roommate! Now that I'm an Auror and detail and trickery are part of my job, you can’t really outwit me, can you? Okay, okay, I’m just joking,” Harry said when Hermione looked at him reproachfully, “Speaking of Quibbler, why are you holding one? Did S.P.E.W. finally make headlines?" Harry said teasingly and Hermione gave him a look that clearly said she was not amused. "Sorry, but really, what's so interesting in that thing?"
"There just so happens to be a very touching article in it. It was written by one of the members of our D.A. It has to do with orphans. I thought perhaps you could take the time out of your obviously busy schedule to read it," Hermione said pointing at his blank notice board. She knew he was in the same boat as her with absolutely nothing to do, which was rare, but not as uncommon as one might think. Harry wasn't on or part of a current mission and was on sabbatical until after Christmas on Mrs. Weasley's orders. (The Weasleys were having a huge get-together and she wouldn't let Harry miss it like he had the seven previous years. There were many new Weasley grandchildren he needed to meet.).
"It's not my fault they won't give me anything to do since I'm off starting tomorrow. When your husband's the Minister of Magic and you decide one of his employees needs to take it easy, well everyone basically leaves you alone, and the alternative is being bored to death. So, why did you bring me the article? I mean I'm thankful it'll give me something to do. However, what's your interest in it? Besides the fact that you’re a very caring person," Harry said taking The Quibbler from the hands of a pleased Hermione Granger who had a somewhat secretive smile on her face. Hermione didn't take too much time to note the fact he called her a caring person, but she did note it.
Hermione was caught off guard, she had been preoccupied thinking about what a caring parent Harry would make.
"Well?" Harry asked finding the article and starting to read.
"I, well, I'm twenty-three years old and I have a steady job and a nice flat that we share. I mean it's huge, you have your floor and I have mine (the flat was a two-story duplex), and I thought that being the mature adult I am. I was thinking..."
"Hermione?" Harry asked looking up from the article. "You don’t want to have a...a...baby, do you?" Harry asked his friend wide-eyed. He was wondering who would have to be the father. Hermione hadn't dated anyone for a long while, though she was quite attractive. Her hair was still thick and wild. Her eyes, deep and chocolate colored, and she had a great figure.
"No Harry! Well...not right now at least, just keep reading the article," Hermione said alarmed at the way Harry was looking at her.
Harry decided to continue reading and then looked up after a few minutes.
"You want to adopt someone?"
"Harry, think about what I could give them. You said it yourself. I'm a caring person, and all the family that Mrs. Weasley would love to share, just like she's shared with us, especially after the death of my parents..."
"Hermione I'm sorry that never should have happened..." Harry said reaching over and putting his hand over Hermione’s consolingly. Hermione never once blamed him. In fact, it had happened the day after he had made her swear to talk to him about anything that was troubling her, before she did something irrational. Well, it was never irrational when she thought about it, but doing things without telling anyone was dangerous. She couldn’t blame him for not running to Dumbledore when he had been taking that time to help her with her own demons. If he hadn’t had to sit with her, calm her down, and talk to her, he could’ve worried more about his occlumency.
"Harry, don't you see? This is my chance to give someone a great family! Help raise the future and make sure a child grows up in a safe, loving environment. That's the best Christmas present you could give one of these kids...I just...I just want to help," Hermione said looking into Harry's eyes and instantly melting his heart.
"Hermione, what about the memories they have of their parents? You can't take that away unless you adopt a baby. And sometimes even babies have some memories that are never erased," Harry said recalling the dreams he had about his mother and father.
"Yes, but this is a chance to give them more happy memories. Maybe they lost their parents, but I can give them a chance for a better life. You know, as well as I do, what scars a war can leave," At that Harry's hand nonchalantly ventured towards the place his trademark lightening bolt scar had once been. "We can help take theirs away too."
She had him, as much as Harry hated to admit it. She had him wrapped around her little finger. He would've done anything for his friend, and to try and crush her dream now would just be pointless.
"Hermione, if you really want to do this...I will completely support you," Harry said handing her the Quibbler.
Actually, Harry really liked the idea of adopting someone. Harry knew that anyone could be happy with Hermione. Any man who married her would be the happiest man in the world. 'What is wrong with me? Why do I keep thinking about Hermione in that sense?' Harry told himself.
"Thank you Harry. Oh, thank you so much," Hermione said coming around to hug her friend and letting herself become teary-eyed.
"Don't cry, Hermione. I said I supported you didn't I? I don’t like you crying" Harry said wiping away the stray tear that had fallen down her cheek.
Wiping away the rest of the stray tears, Hermione scanned the Quibbler for orphanage names and all the necessary requirements and information that would have to be brought on the day of adoption.
"There is no way you can't meet all the requirements Hermione. You are a wonderful witch and perfect parent figure, you’ve never been called on any law violation…ever, and believe me I’ve seen your file both muggle and Wizarding. You moral perfection it’s fact, " Hermione smiled at the vote of confidence in her friend’s voice, but paled again at the sight of one of the requirements listed under proof of citizenship and magical diploma.
NO SINGLE PARENT ADOPTIONS ALLOWED!
"Oh no."
"What happened?”
"I’m not married.”
"So what?"
"Harry parents...you know man and wife...male and female...lover and lover...I haven't even dated someone for months! The rules say no single parent adoptions!" Hermione exclaimed. She was not too happy that her wonderful plans had been shattered because of a silly single parent prejudice in the Wizarding world.
Harry knowing what was to come next decided to act bewildered.
"Harry..."
"Yes, Hermione"
"Well, we do live together, eat together at meal times, and basically spend most of our free time with one another...I mean it would only be right for the agency to assume..." Hermione didn't want to come out and say it. She was afraid to play the role of his girlfriend because she secretly did want to be his real girlfriend.
"Assume?"
"That we're together...like that," Hermione stated simply.
The press ran a story every other month about the two of them secretly planning to elope on the next full moon, but they didn't let it bother them. Now, their situation seemed to be playing into their favor.
"Like what?"
"Oh, for Pete’s sake Harry! Quit playing stupid! I may have been more convinced if you had just walked in from a night at the Hog's Head with Ron, but for Merlin's sake you know bloody well like what! Like we're a couple! You know, live together, eat together, they'll probably assume we shag..." Hermione said turned very red. She couldn’t believe she had just said that.
"Well, if I do agree to this, the press will have a field day," Harry said, equally red.
"It doesn’t really matter. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. You have to help me! I won't hold you to it if you don't. I mean there's always Ron to ask, or if at last resort...Neville, but please Harry, you would make a great father."
Harry didn't say anything after she said he would make a great father because he was thinking of all the things he never got to do when he was a kid. All the things that Mr. Weasley had done with Ron and his siblings: Quidditch games and family outings…
Hermione became nervous when he didn't answer, "Um, I'll make your favorite meals for a week...polish all your brooms...and I don't know be your slave if I have to...just please..."
Harry tried not to laugh when she got so desperate as to offer to sell herself into slavery. "Fine, but only because you'll make my favorite meals for a week. But umm I guess you’ll have to borrow Dobby because...your cooking’s um...well..."
"Deal," Hermione said and kissed his cheek. Both of them knew there was no light way to say Hermione’s cooking skills were virtually non-existent.
"So what's next?" Harry asked.
"Well, I think the child certainly needs to have his or her own room.
"Oh," Now that he was excited he had half expected to go downstairs and bring up the files they'd need before skipping off with her to the orphanage, but now he saw there were other things to discuss.
"Now, I don't think it would be wise to decorate the room. Every child has his or her own since of style, and we don’t really know if we’re bringing home a boy or girl. But a room does need to be empty." Hermione said thinking of the eight rooms in their flat. There were four rooms upstairs and four rooms downstairs. All together they made up a kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, a living room, a library, and a study for Harry.
"Well, what do you suggest?" Harry asked since there wasn't an extra room. "I could buy us a house..."
"Harry, don't be ridiculous, besides that would cause quite a stir. Not to mention that Mrs. Weasley wasn't happy when we decided to live together because of the controversial circumstances. Could you imagine if we bought a house together! I think we should just compromise. We both know it either has to be the library or the study." Hermione said in her know-it-all tone that others knew was her trademark. However, she didn’t usually use that tone with Harry because he had –literally speaking– become a part of her.
"Which is bigger?" Harry asked simply.
"The library is and if we adopt a girl she would love the window seat!" Hermione exclaimed. She was going to miss reading in front of the large window that overlooked one of London's busiest streets, but was happy to share.
"We could shrink some of your books and keep them in my office. You’ll have to put up with my messiness though."
"Harry that's the least of my concern, I'm more worried about whether or not the child will like his or her new room."
"Guess what? I have to add one more thing to my set of terms." Harry said thinking quickly.
"I suppose, you're taking this for all it's worth, aren't you?"
"Yes, and my terms of agreement, now, includes the fact that I get to escape the shopping trip for furnishing the new room." Harry said smiling.
"Deal, I'll go home and start moving things. See you in a few hours," Hermione said leaving the copy of The Quibbler on Harry’s desk.
"So, what should I do?"
"I don't know, you’ll think of something," Hermione said exiting his office with the biggest smile on her face.
"Well, I suppose I can make a list of what I would want my child to be like," Harry said scanning the end of the article. Under the list of requirements, there was a list of things to consider before adopting. Harry's list was very random and unorganized in ways of importance.
1. Quidditch interest on a scale of 1-10
2. Favorite team
3. Knowledge of Dark Lord
4. Attitude
5. Smile
6. Name
7. His or her past
8. Intelligence (Harry wrote that down after he had discussed his list with Hermione. He, obviously, had been thinking of Hermione)
Later that day, Hermione decided to accompany Harry home and Harry showed her the list he had made. She laughed knowing only Harry would've written that list. However seeing his exuberance, Hermione quickly jotted down a few requirements.
1. Attitude
2. Interest in being adopted
3. How well they get along with other children
4. A little about their past
5. What they are interested in, besides Quidditch
6. What they know about Hogwarts
7. Name
8. How well they embrace the idea of having Harry Potter as their potential father.
Harry looked at Hermione oddly after reading the last bit.
"What does that mean, and I'm not being dense this time," Harry, said confused. He didn't understand how she could write that when she’d said he'd make a great father.
"Harry, don't take it the wrong way. However, has it ever occurred to you these kids may decide to put on a show? To – you know – tempt your interest into adopting them. I'm sure they know who you are and being the child of a celebrity has its perks. I wouldn't want to think badly of any of them, but they may decide to try and get us to adopt them. Some of them might love to bask in glory that they haven't had a chance at for many years. They'll want attention; being in an orphanage doesn't offer much individuality in a lot of ways. So I'm just saying, we should be careful. These children will almost be ten, some of them, they aren't daft," Hermione explained. Harry saw that she was right, but he still didn't like it. It was just one more of those things that came with the name Harry Potter.
"Fine, I'll metamorphosis my hair and eyes, but that's it."
"Anything else you feel like adding to the deal, now that, I've made you cast your glamour away as well?" Hermione teased and Harry took a moment to think.
"Actually there is, Mrs. Potter," Harry laughed.
"You can't be serious," Hermione, said opening her mouth wide in shock.
"Don't worry I'm not saying you have to marry me and I’m planning on calling in a favor as far as the official adopting goes, but I thought we could put on a great show for the kids." Harry said smiling.
"Isn't that a form of deceit?"
"Isn't glamour, a form of deceit?" Harry replied.
"Alright, but nothing else, this is almost too far," Hermione said secretly congratulating herself.
"What's the limit then? Sleeping with me?" Harry asked and both blushed furiously as they walked home in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Two
Hermione walked into the orphanage holding the hand of a subtly disguised Harry Potter. The orphanage didn’t exactly seem like a horrid environment but Hermione could not believe that an orphanage could provide as much love as parents could. She looked at the floral printed wallpaper of the hallway that the lady from the orphanage was leading them down. She did not work at the orphanage, the lady had quickly explained, and was only involved in the adoptions.
Hermione silently wondered about the orphanage? Where did the children sleep? Was it comfortable enough? Soon enough, she saw beds lined on both sides of the walls of one of the girl's dormitories. Each of the beds had the same white sheets. It eerily reminded her of the Hogwarts’ hospital wing. At the same time, though, it comforted her since Madame Pompfrey always kept the hospital wing spick-and-span.
"Are you interested in adopting a boy or girl, Mr. and Mrs. Granger?" The woman asked.
Harry and Hermione had decided to introduce themselves as Mr. and Mrs. Granger. It would not have been wise to call themselves Mr. and Mrs. Potter since the Daily Prophet could hear the name Potter from miles away.
"We don’t really have a preference. Actually, we are more focused on their personalities," Hermione answered, as Harry looked around. He was busy thinking about how lucky he was to have a family, even if it had been with the Dursleys.
"Beautiful sentiment Mrs. Granger! If you would come right this way,” she said leading them down a corridor to an office that opened up to a garden, “They are outside now. They've just had supper. You are interested in the range of eight to ten, correct?"
The woman obviously didn't spend a lot of time with the children by the way she referred to them as they, so blatantly. She had already explained that she dealt more with the legal part of adoption and that they had many people who spent quality time with the children.
"Yes," Hermione answered again.
"Hermione," Harry whispered as they neared the back door.
"What, dear?" Hermione answered as Mrs. Charles went outside.
"What qualities are we looking for in these children?" Harry asked nervously. He was beginning to get scared. He had a feeling that once he went out there; he would want to adopt all of them.
"Well, I thought about that while I was moving furniture earlier and I think that you should look for something that catches your eye. It's like when you're trying to find a spouse and you picture yourself with that person every day and you just know…it’s magic … it’s more than magic,” Hermione said somewhat dreamily, “It's really the same principle, just look take at all of them and see if you can imagine…”
“Imagine what?”
“Imagine sending them off to Hogwarts or playing Quidditch with them at the Weasley's. Does that help a little?" Hermione asked looking hopefully at him.
"Yes, and thanks, Hermione," Harry smiled.
"For what?" Hermione asked confused.
"Well, I hope you didn’t think that I'm going to let you raise our special someone on your own, do you? I hope I can be a good father," Harry said looking into her eyes. Hermione instantly melted. At that moment, she just wanted to hug him and kiss him forever but she refrained.
"You're welcome, and Harry you’ll be absolutely wonderful," Hermione answered. Harry looked down at the floor to hide his blushing cheeks.
"Are you ready to meet the children?" the lady asked. She was wearing a cream-colored skirt and jacket. Her hair and make-up were just right. She seemed to have an aura of vanity about her and when Hermione looked out the door, she saw the children making faces at the lady behind her back. Hermione tried not to giggle. They all looked like great kids. Many of them were standing there, looking oh… so hopeful. Hermione almost started to cry when she realized that in some sad way it was like picking out a puppy in a litter. They all wanted you to take them home, but your mother only said you could have one.
"Come on all of you! Introduce yourselves," Ms. Charles said.
Harry and Hermione had been told that they were only aloud to hear the children's first names so that there wouldn't be any prejudice as to who and what their parents had been (or done) during the war. Harry was very thankful for that. He had many memories that would no doubt be resurrected if he knew he was thinking about adopting a Lestrange or Nott.
A girl with blonde pigtails came up to them first. Her eyes were a cold gray and she didn't have the hopeful look that the others had. She offered her name up with a smile that was noticeably forced, but not necessarily mean, "Gemma."
A boy with raven black hair and slightly tanned skin was next. He didn't seem excited or irritated. He acted like it was a normal event on any other day, "Jake."
A brunette with seemingly similar attitude came up behind him, "Danielle."
A boy and girl who were holding hands came up to them next. The woman whispered that they were fraternal twins. Both had ash blonde hair. However, the boy had blue eyes while his sister had brown ones. They looked like they depended on each other. "My name is Mitchell and this is my sister Mischa,” the boy said boldly.
There were some kids with attitude problems and a few like the raven-haired boy, who told Harry and Hermione their names, and without any expression.
"Sarah."
"Brandon."
"Lee."
"Krista."
"Marshall."
"Fiona."
"William."
"Rachel."
"Hannah."
"Nicholas."
"Charmain."
The little girl standing in front of Harry caught his eye. First of all, her name made him snap out of the daze he had been in. Slowly, he looked into a pair of green eyes and understood why Hermione constantly told him his were so eye-catching. Their color did make people take a second glance. The little girl was out of breath because she had been running around which showed that she was pretty athletic. Oddly enough, she reminded him of Fleur. Her hair was wavy and blonde and she was very fair. She lingered a while and then went running back to the Quaffle hoops in the garden. She didn't line up to take a shot at the hoops but ran behind a tree. When she had come back around the other side, she was holding a tiny, golden snitch in her hand. Hermione had to physically tug on Harry's shirt to bring him back.
"Harry," Hermione said after the last few children had told them their names.
"What, oh, I'm sorry," Harry said.
"See someone that has potential?" the woman asked coyly, and Harry frowned. He really didn't like impersonal people like her. It would have been better if they had let a sweet woman like Molly Weasley show them the children. The cold adoption agency Barbie-dolls should be sacked and returned to their shel…surgeon.
"Yes, who were you looking at dear?" Hermione asked. She enjoyed calling him dear.
"Do you think my wife and I could have some time alone with the children?"
‘I also like being referred to as “my wife”,’ Hermione thought giddily, and then mentally slapped herself.
"Well, it's sort of against regulation..." The woman began.
"I'm an Auror and I happen to know that there are about fifty surveillance charms around my very being this moment. I'm sure that you won't have trouble seeing what we're doing," Harry said curtly.
"Fine, I'll give you fifteen minutes," she said turning on her heel and going back inside. Harry was sure she only protested because she wanted to look professional.
"Why did you ask her to leave?" Hermione asked.
"I wanted the kids to get some quality time with us. Plus, she had a horrible attitude,” Harry said angrily.
"I agree," Hermione said smiling. She was happy that Harry hadn’t noticed how pretty that woman was.
"So, who should it be?" Harry asked seriously and Hermione smiled.
"I think that Jake was very promising, and he looked a little like you."
"Yes, but that could be a bad thing considering we don't want people to think I had an illegitimate son when I was fourteen," Harry said.
"True, did you like the girls better or the boys? Some of them seemed very charming. It was hard for me to pass on Mitchell and Mischa, but I think that they should go to a couple that can't conceive. It would be difficult if either of us had other children later. They would confide in each other more than they would either of us. Krista, William, Brandon, and then there was …"
"Charmain?" Harry asked.
"Yes, you noticed her too."
"She was the little girl with the gorgeous green eyes. It's a good thing she didn't have red hair, or I might've confused her with a few pictures of my mom that my Aunt Petunia gave me." Harry said thinking about the few photo albums his aunt had given him.
"I think you want to get to know her better," Hermione said.
"Yes, but she isn't the only one. Brandon and William seem promising."
"Why don't you go over to the Quaffle hoops and I'll see what the swings have to offer?"
Hermione laughed when the more friendly children came up to them to tell them more about themselves before they reached their destination. Harry noticed that Charmain hadn't though. She just kept on playing with the snitch.
"So what do you do Mr. Granger?" Lee asked.
"I'm an Auror," Harry answered.
"Wow, really? That's cool! My dad was an Auror too,” Brandon said excitedly and immediately that put him off of Harry's list. Harry didn’t want any children from an unpredictable background.
"How many bad guys have you caught?" Krista asked.
"A lot," Harry said taking the Quaffle, "Hey, mind if I take a shot?"
"No, but you've got to stand way over there. You're bigger so it wouldn't be fair if you shot from here," Hannah said and Harry laughed.
Harry was about to throw the Quaffle when someone ran into his side and nearly knocked him off balance, but he didn't fall. In fact, he kept her from falling. It was Charmain.
"Charmain! He was about to take a shot!" William said.
"Well, I'm sorry, but it just so happens I caught the snitch I was after in the process, which is much more difficult than throwing a Quaffle. I apologize Mr. Granger, but if you've ever tried to catch a snitch, I'm sure you know what an infuriating little monster they can turn into. Again, I'm sorry, and William go take a chill pill," Charmain said talking very quickly. Just the way Hermione used to, when she was flustered.
"Does she always use big words?" Harry asked, surprised that a nine-year-old had just used the word infuriating.
"Yes, she reads every book anyone donates to the orphanage and tells us, she'll get out of here, every day. She's been here since she was a baby. She thinks she deserves to be adopted, first, just because she’s been here the longest," Krista answered.
"How many years has she been here?" Harry asked.
"Nine, and nine too many. I think she's a bit loony, that one," William answered, and instantly Harry was reminded of the way Ron and Hermione used to bicker. He knew that Charmain was the perfect daughter.
“She also likes to tell us what to do,” Sarah added.
“And the scary thing is, you always do it,” William said somewhat bewildered. Harry laughed as he remembered how Hermione used to tell all her their classmates what to do.
"Are you going to take your shot?" Jake asked. "’Cause, if you aren't, I'm next," he said.
"Um, here you go ahead, I've got to go talk to Herm...I mean Mrs. Granger," Harry said running over to the swings where Hermione was happily swinging with two little girls.
"Hermione, we need to talk ASAP!" Harry whispered.
"Okay, I think we can go inside now. It was nice meeting all of you," Hermione shouted to everyone. Harry waved to them as they went back inside.
"Oh, I was just coming out to get you,” the adoption woman said when they came in, “Have you chosen a child you'd like to look at more closely?"
"Could you give us a minute?" He asked and when she just stood there without moving, he added, "Alone?"
His green eyes were glowing and at that moment, Harry looked really handsome. Noticing this, the woman looked him over and Hermione glared at her. No one was allowed to think Harry was hot when he was commanding. Except her.
"Yes, of course." She said and swayed her hips more than usual as she walked back to her desk. Harry rolled his eyes.
"What is it?" Hermione asked.
"Does anyone have your eye?" Harry asked.
"I think that Fiona's just adorable, but she has a crush on that little boy named Lee, and he seemed very lonely. Oh, I wouldn't be able to ask her to come away with me when she's his only friend. I just don't know Harry. This is harder than I thought it would be. How about you?" Hermione asked.
Harry smiled hopefully, "Charmain, Hermione, she’s great and guess what, she loves books!" Harry said excitedly.
"Harry, that's wonderful! Should we ask Ms. Charles to ask her to come in?" Hermione asked.
"You mean that lady has a name?" Harry said smirking.
"Oh, shut up!"
"Well, go tell Ms. Charles I’m going out here to get Charmain. I don't think any of those kids truly like Ms. umm… what was it? Oh yeah, Charles,” Harry said teasing Hermione.
"You're right, and Harry, thank you."
"Why are you thanking me?"
"For being such a great guy," Hermione said kissing his cheek. Harry ignored the rush of warmth that spread throughout him starting at this left cheek.
"Hey, if that's what I get for being a great guy you have my personal guarantee that I'll never stop," Harry said and Hermione blushed as she headed for Ms. Charles’ desk.
Walking into the yard, Harry looked around for Charmain and found her by the same tree, she had ran behind, after introducing herself.
"Charmain?" Harry asked and saw her sitting alone with her knees pulled up to her chin.
"Yes?" She asked timidly.
"Would you like to come inside with me?" Harry asked.
"Well, that all depends on if you think I'm selfish," she answered and inwardly Harry wondered if he was making a mistake. Charmain was very complicated…
"No, why would I think that?"
"I know what the other kids say about me. I want to be adopted, but not out of sympathy. I don't think I'm better than any of them just because I've been here longer. I only try to help them. I don’t understand their fowl attitudes. They should be glad they have happy memories of their parents. I really don't know much about mine at all. They lived in France and moved here to help the war effort and then they just…died. I don't even know how they died," Charmain said, but she wasn't crying. Harry could make a connection with her that he never thought he'd make with anyone else...ever. She was just like him at that age, not sad, but confused.
"Well, if you'll let Hermione and me adopt you, I promise you we'll find out," Harry said.
"Don't make empty promises on my account. I'll still let you adopt me, if it's what you want," Charmain said looking up at Harry.
"Hey, you're the one who gets to decide whether you want us to adopt you. The promise isn't empty either. I can throw my name around and get a lot of things," Harry smiled.
"Are you rich Mr. Granger?" Charmain didn't ask hopefully, but wondered aloud.
"Something like that. Why don't you come in and talk to Hermione? By the way you can call me, Harry." Harry said and offered a hand to help her up.
"Well, Harry, I think I like you."
"Good, because I think you're a very special girl," Harry said putting his arm around her. Quickly, they went inside to join Hermione.
Charmain watched as Harry hugged Hermione tightly when they went to the office lobby. She wondered if her parents looked so right with one another. Suddenly, she noticed something. Neither of them wore a wedding band!
"Um, excuse me, but why don't you both wear your wedding rings?" Charmain asked and they both tensed. Hermione smiled. Charmain was very observant.
"Harry, we might as well tell her," Hermione said. Harry reluctantly agreed and pulled his wand from his pocket allowing him to metamorphosis back.
"I'm Harry Potter, and Hermione Granger is my best friend. Well, Hermione wanted to adopt someone but they wouldn’t let people who aren’t married adopt. So, we had to pretend we were a couple. Remember how I told you I could find out about your parents? Well it isn't because I’m rich. It's the same reason they'll let us adopt you if you want. The name gets me more attention than I deserve. Occasionally however, for a good cause, I do use it to my advantage as well," Harry said to the wide-eyed Charmain
"Wow, William would've been starry-eyed at the sight of you. He has a poster of you above his bed," Charmain said laughing at her good luck. Harry silently thanked Merlin he hadn’t chosen William.
"Are you mad at us?" Hermione asked.
"No, but I think it's funny that you try to hide your fame," Charmain giggled.
"See, didn't I tell you she was great?" Harry whispered to Hermione who was melting with every beautiful sound her laugh created.
"Harry, can we ask her questions on the way home? I think I want to sign the adoption papers right now," Hermione said.
"Well, Charmain, what do you think?" Harry asked.
"About what?" She asked back.
"About becoming our daughter?"
"Oh, well, do I get my own room?" Charmain asked.
"Yep," Harry answered.
"Can I have a library card?" Charmain asked again.
“Of course, you get your own library card. You’re Hermione Granger’s daughter after all!”
"I'll make it my personal mission," Harry said.
"Wow, an Auror on a personal mission for me," Charmain said shyly, and Harry took her hand and wrapped an arm around Hermione's shoulder as they walked back to see Ms. Charles. Charmain was a little taller than his and Hermione’s waist. Harry and Hermione were about the same height except that Hermione was one or two inches shorter.
"Ms. Charles, we would like to adopt Charmain," Hermione said to the woman who was gawking openly at Harry. She hadn't said anything about him changing appearances, but she was obviously noticing that he had.
"Oh, and I'd like to take the adoption papers to the ministry myself. I have a personal favor to ask the minister," Harry said, and Ms. Charles nodded handing him an envelope.
"Thank you. Have a nice day," Harry said laughing openly much to Ms. Charles’ amazement. Today, Harry felt he was the happiest man on earth as he walked out of the office with Hermione and Charmain.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Three
Harry, Hermione, and Charmain were walking down the street to the Ministry of Magic. They had decided to walk since the ministry wasn’t that far away from the orphanage. It was a rather cold day but all of then were so happy, they didn’t even notice it.
“I just can’t believe it,” Hermione silently contemplated, “I’m a mother…”
Suddenly Charmain jolted Hermione out of her thoughts. “Why do we have to see the Minister?” Charmain asked.
Harry and Hermione were a bit glad that she was a very mature nine-year old. This way, they could tell her things and she would understand situations much better. And hopefully, adjust to the circumstances.
“Well, as I was saying before, Hermione and I are supposed to be married to adopt you. Which we are not,” Harry said with a sidelong glance at Hermione, “So, I need to talk to the minister to see if he can pull a few strings for us. We do live together, but Hermione and I aren’t umm… exactly… romantically involved,” Harry explained.
Charmain stayed silent a few minutes before voicing her opinion, “Why don’t you just get a marriage license? You don’t have to get married.” Hermione visibly tensed at her statement.
“That’s exactly what I was thinking but…”
“But the Minister’s a personal friend of mine,” Harry said finishing Hermione’s sentence. Harry and Hermione always had that telepathic way of finishing each other sentences. It had driven Ron mad.
“Really? Do you know his son Ron Weasley, the Cannons’ keeper?” Charmain asked wide-eyed.
Hermione smiled. Well, it seemed as if Charmain didn’t know everything about “The Famous Trio” as Harry, Ron and Hermione were nicknamed. Hermione was secretly glad for that. She did not want to impress on Charmain’s innocent conscious who her adoptive parents were.
“Yes, you’ll probably meet him tomorrow, if I know Harry as well as I think I do,” Hermione said smirking and Harry sent her a furtive look.
“I’m going to meet a member of the Chudley Cannons?” Charmain asked in apparent disbelief.
“Fan?” Harry asked.
“Like there’s any team better?!” Charmain exclaimed.
“Well, lucky you, because Ron just might have a surprise for you,” Harry said.
“I knew it,” Hermione said laughing, “ You’re thinking of taking her to the next game, aren’t you?
“Oh my gosh, I think I’ll faint before we get to the Ministry!” Charmain said dramatically.
“I think we’re already there,” Hermione said smiling.
Hermione and Harry let Charmain run up the stairs to the Ministry.
“Don’t go too far, Charm” Hermione said, “Wait for us at the stairs,”
“Harry, Ron’s going to love her. I think we finally found him someone who could give him a run for the title as biggest-cannon-fan-ever,” Hermione said merrily.
“I know isn’t it great? Should we invite him over later and surprise her?” Harry asked.
“No, we have a lot left to do today. Plus, we don’t want to fool her into thinking everyday with us will be that exciting,” Hermione answered.
“That’s true.”
“Are you coming?” Charmain shouted and Hermione ran up the steps leaving Harry chasing behind both of them.
Mr.Weasley had changed the location of the minister’s office the moment he had the chance. Unfortunately, it took a lot of time to walk up the stairs to his office and many lazy wizards usually complained a lot since they were not used to any sort of exercise.
Quickly, they walked to the end of an avidly decorated hallway to a set of elaborate oak doors.
“Okay, I’m going to go in first and then Hermione you can bring Charmain in,” Harry said to Hermione quietly.
“Good luck, Harry,” Hermione said kissing Harry on the cheek.
Charmain smiled. She was nine years old but even she could see how much Harry and Hermione loved each other.
“I think it’s time I used my special gift. I just have to bring these two together!” Charmain thought. She had a way of subtle medalling she referred to as a gift.
Harry had intended to have Hermione come with him, but didn’t want to leave Charmain alone in the hallway. He was now responsible for both of them.
Quickly, Harry knocked on the pair of doors and stepped into the office, closing the door behind him and performing a Silencing charm.
“Harry! What brings you here?” Arthur Weasley asked. Putting on his glasses, Mr. Weasley greeted Harry. Mr. Weasley had not changed much except for a few signs that showed how old he had become. However, Mr. Weasley’s numerous grandchildren kept him fit as a fiddle.
“Well, I have a bit of a favor to ask you, sir,” Harry said fingering the envelope that contained the orphanage papers.
“Anything in my power,” Mr. Weasley said and Harry breathed a sigh of relief.
“Have a seat, Harry. Tea?” Mr. Weasley offered pouring himself a cup.
“No, thank you, um I’m not sure how to say this but…”
“What is it?” Mr. Weasley asked in a concerned tone. He was hoping Harry hadn’t broken the law, or worse gone and gotten married without telling Molly.
“Well, it all started at work when Hermione brought me a copy of The Quibbler.”
“Hermione? Reading “The Quibbler”? Our logical Hermione?” Mr. Weasley said astonished. Harry laughed. He had been thinking the exact same thing.
“Well, you know Hermione. She’s always had a soft spot,” Harry said, “And then she started reading an article about orphans.”
“Oh, yes, it’s absolutely terrible the number of them we have after the war.” Mr. Weasley replied. “They all deserve a family and especially the older ones. Luckily, most of them have money in their parent’s vaults. So, we’re able to pay to send them to Hogwarts. Few of them, however, are being sponsored by donations,” Mr. Weasley explained.
“Really? Well, I would love to contribute if the need arise,” Harry said concerned.
“Sure, I’ll have my secretary give you the forms on your way out.”
“Right, forms,” Harry said fingering the envelope in his hand.
“What’s that?”
“Oh, this is what I’m supposed to be talking to you about,” Harry said.
“Hermione and I want to adopt one of the orphans.” He said lying.
“I see, and you want to know if you can adopt one without being married?” Arthur said nodding, understanding, and Harry smiled.
“Please, is there anything you can do? This girl is absolutely amazing. I know we have just met her today but she’s perfect. She’s very intelligent and an devoted Cannons fan. I haven’t found her lacking in any aspect, except she’s unloved and Hermione and I could do something about that. She even asked if we could get her a library card. I like this girl a lot and I’m even willing to drag Hermione down the aisle if you don’t let me adopt her without marrying Hermione. You know that we have a stable home and she’ll get all the family she could ask for. That is if Molly’s party’s still on. I was planning on introducing her then,” Harry said babbling very quickly with a hopeful expression. It was then that Harry realized that Hermione must have been going crazy not knowing what was happening. Immediately, he removed the charms preventing her from listening.
On the other side of the large oak doors Hermione had been trying to break the silencing charms but to no avail. Trying to break another wizard’s charms was difficult. Especially, considering that Harry did The Silencing Charm. Although, Hermione was a very intelligent and one of the most powerful witches in the world, but Harry had mastered useful little charms wonderfully. Thankfully, Harry had finally removed the charm.
“Are you trying to listen?” Charmain asked. She had noticed that Hermione had literally been plastered to the door muttering spells under her breath.
“Yes, but I can’t hear anything,” Hermione said moving away from the door, not wanting Charmain to hear if Arthur decided for some odd reason to say no. She knew he just couldn’t, but wasn’t sure.
“It’s alright I don’t want to overhear it if you can’t adopt me. I’d rather have you both tell me and give me a long speech in hopes I’d understand,” Charmain said briskly and resumed a position similar to the one she had when Harry had come to talk to her by the tree. A confused, lonely child’s pose.
Immediately, Hermione pulled Charmain towards her and hugged her.
“I like to be hugged,” Charmain said in a small voice.
“Me too,” Hermione said and stroked the little girl’s hair while she hugged her. Hermione could tell she was very scared.
Meanwhile, Mr. Weasley still hadn’t said anything after Harry had babbled out the whole story. He was wondering what he could do without breaking the law. He wanted to very much. He knew if anyone could understand an orphaned child it would be Harry, and Hermione, well, she was about the greatest influence and role model a little girl could have. However it would be unfair to wave the law.
“Harry, I want to, but I just don’t know how I can wave the law for you without being unfair. This law is more tried than you could ever imagine. I’ve had four calls this week from unmarried people begging me to let them adopt one of these children. Now those were different circumstances than yours but the principle is the same when it comes to the public eye. I wish I hadn’t inspired Luna to write that article. I can’t even imagine how much pain this will cause you,” Mr. Weasley said running his hand through his hair nervously. Luna had come over with Ron for dinner at the Burrow and they had begun discussing the orphanage situation. When she had said it would make a wonderful article, he never expected her to put it in The Quibbler. He had hoped the Prophet would get a hold of it first. Actually, The Quibbler was more popular than people realized and he had received many phone calls from people wanting to adopt children but who weren’t married. However he knew none of them were like Harry and Hermione.
“Mr. Weasley, please, there has to be something you can do” Harry said getting frustrated.
“I’m sorry Harry, but if you want to you can keep this girl in your care for small periods at a time. However, I figured it would be much more painful to let her go then.”
“She’s sitting outside. If you could just see her sir, I’m sure…”
“Harry don’t put me through that,” Mr. Weasley said perplexed at the situation.
“There has to be something…” Harry said in a whisper to himself. Then, he remembered what Hermione and Charmain had both suggested.
“What about a marriage license? Under the license, Hermione and I could get married without having to maintain any commitment towards each other,” Harry said and looked up to see Mr. Weasley smiling.
“Great solution!” Mr. Weasley said with a laugh.
“So does the law still stand? They are good for five years, right? By then, Hermione and I would certainly have moved on if we wanted to,” Harry said something heavy settling on his heart. He remembered why they changed the law to make the licenses valid for five years. When everyone was going off to fight in the war, no one knew who would be coming back.
“Yes, and legally you would be presumed to be married, which is good enough for the adoption agency. However, you are allowed to separate any time you or Hermione wish to change paths.”
“So, when Charmain’s fourteen and the license has expired, she can invoke the right to stay with any of us or both of us, right?” Harry asked, not sure how that would work.
“Well, we’ll see… by that time comes, who knows, Hermione might be your wife,” Arthur said smiling and Harry rolled his eyes. He and Mrs. Weasley had been on a mission to get Hermione and Harry to fall in love with each other since both of them had moved in together. Mrs. Weasley had thought it morally incorrect for both of them to move in together especially when they were not in the holy state of matrimony.
“Does this mean Hermione and I have to marry? This is really more confusing than I expected it to be. I have to marry Hermione and what if I fall in love with someone else? It’s all so complicated. The media will have a field day and I’m not sure what’s going on at all,” Harry asked. He had everything worked out until the realization of what he was doing hit him.
“Yes, you have to marry Hermione,” Mr. Weasley said, “Harry, life is confusing. Plus, I don’t think you realized what you were doing. But now you have given hope to a young girl who has no one left in this world. You have to do this because I know you don’t want to break hearts.”
Harry sighed and out on a brave face, “What else can I do?”
“Why don’t you go get Hermione and Charmain and we’ll talk more about the marriage license?” Arthur suggested.
“All right and thanks, Mr.Weasley,” Harry said heading for the doors.
“Oh, don’t thank me. I came off a little heartless for a few minutes. Plus, Molly would kill me if you didn’t come to dinner tomorrow night,” Arthur said.
“Well, you can guarantee that the invitation is accepted,” Harry said laughing and walked into the hallway finding Hermione and Charmain in a heart-warming embrace. He had been so sure that he would find an awestruck Hermione on his way out. She was probably shocked out of her mind when she overheard the decision.
Taking another glance at her and Charmain he knew that she couldn’t have been listening and be that comfortable. Harry almost didn’t want to say anything, and he didn’t have to because once Hermione saw him, she gently pulled away from Charmain.
“So, what happened?” Hermione asked noticing something was amiss in Harry’s demeanor.
“Marriage license.”
“We’re getting married? I know I suggested it but I didn’t think it would…”
“Well, Mr. Weasley said they still have five year marriage licenses and we just have get one in order to be allowed to adopt Charmain. It’s the only way Hermione, and I hope you trust me enough to get one. We can ask Mr.Weasley to keep it confidential,” Harry said looking into Hermione’s eyes.
Hermione blushed and looked away. Secretly, had always wanted Harry to propose to her but this was not even near proposing. This was so different.
Beside Hermione, Charmain was now grinning from ear to ear. This really made her mission a lot easier.
“When can we sign?” Hermione asked and Harry kissed the top of her head.
“Come on, let’s go,” Harry said taking Hermione and Charmain’s hands and heading back towards the doors.
“Me too?” Charmain asked.
“Yes, Mr. Weasley wanted to meet you and you have to sign some papers. By the way, we’re going to their house for dinner tomorrow night,” Harry answered.
Charmain gaped at him and Harry laughed. When they entered the office, Charmain looked at the Minister with wonder.
“Hello, I’m Mr. Weasley,” Mr. Weasley said extending his hand to the girl who looked down at it with wide green eyes before she remembered her manners.
“Charmain Aiglentine,” Charmain said revealing her last name.
“Nice to meet you, I understand you’re a fan of the Cannons?” Arthur asked and Charmain sent Harry a look that clearly said she couldn’t believe he told the Minister of Magic. Charmain didn’t yet know that Arthur Weasley would be her surrogate grandfather.
“Yes,” She said looking surprised.
“Oh good. So tell me Charmain, do you want Harry and Hermione to adopt you?” he asked. He now remembered the envelope in Harry’s hands and knew that they would want his official signature right then and there.
“More than anything,” she answered.
“Harry can I see the envelope please?” Mr. Weasley asked and Harry handed him the unopened envelope.
“Now, have you two read any of this?” he asked after Harry handed him the envelope.
“No but we’ll sign the papers anyway,” Harry answered, and Hermione sent him a look saying that he should read everything before agreeing to anything.
“Does that go for you too Hermione?” Mr. Weasley asked.
“N-,” Hermione was about to disagree when she saw Harry give her a pleading look, “Yes, sir,” she answered.
“You can go sit down if you’d like Charmain. I’ll come and ask you a few questions in a minute. Help yourself to some of my wife’s cookies,” he said and with a swish of his wand they appeared on the side table.
“He only offered me tea,” Harry joked while Mr. Weasley read over the documents.
“You looked stressed Harry,” Arthur said taking Harry off guard.
“I think Harry’s just too excited,” Hermione said covering for her friend.
“Right, well, I need both of you to sign the marriage license,” Mr. Weasley said procuring the legal document and two quills magically.
Hermione looked at the document and gulped. This was one of the things she had been dreaming about since 4th year. She had a crush on him, but she had never gone as far as to say she wanted to marry him.
Harry was thinking along the same lines as Hermione, when suddenly with a surge of determination, Hermione took the quill firmly signing on the line provided. Harry was more than surprised. However when Hermione looked at him smiling, Harry too, gathered the courage and signed.
“Thank you. Now we can look at the adoption papers,” Mr. Weasley said professionally and Harry and Hermione tried not to laugh. Actually, Mr. Weasley was very happy but a bit scared wondering how Molly would react to this.
“Now, have you brought the necessary papers?” Harry handed another envelope with the requested information.
“Charmain are you ready to sign?” Harry asked and she hopped up from the chair she had been occupying. She had been munching on the awesome cookies that were Mrs. Weasley’s specialty. She found them much better than the ones they got at the orphanage. They were always store bought.
Smiling, she signed where Mr. Weasley indicated. Harry and Hermione followed suit. After congratulating Harry and Hermione, Mr. Weasley took Charmain to the leather couch and asked her a few questions about life at the orphanage. Harry and Hermione figured it was for some sort of Ministry survey.
“I can’t believe we did it!” Hermione said still clearly in shock and Harry laughed.
“Neither can I,” he admitted.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come shopping?” Hermione said because that was what she was going to do next.
“Well, actually I do, but there’s a few other things I have to do. I need to stop by and pick up her Gringotts’ key and then I promised Charmain, I’d inquire about her parents. I think it’s better to get that out of the way as soon as possible and I did promise.” Harry explained.
“Oh come on Harry, I bet, you won’t let her touch any of the money in her vault until she’s twenty. Plus, I also happen to know that you are a true procrastinator when it comes to research. Why don’t you let me help you with that?” Hermione asked.
“I thought you had work,” Harry said arching one eyebrow.
“Well, I only officially have to be at work three hours if I get all my work filed, and then I can help you. We also have to think about Charmain now,” Hermione said bringing up a good point. It would take some time to get used to the fact that they now had a daughter.
“Can we go now?” Charmain asked with a smile on her face.
“Just a minute. We have to file these papers and then we’re going shopping,” Harry answered.
“For what?” Charmain asked.
“Well, you will need furniture for your bedroom. Oh, Harry, Ginny and I will have to take her to a few Muggle stores next week. Have you ever worn Muggle clothing Charmain?”
“I don’t think so,” she answered. “I have clothes though. At the orphanage, of course. It’s just that I was too excited to stop and tell you.”
“Don’t worry about those. We’ll get you new things,” Harry said.
“Alright then,” Mr.Weasley said interrupting their discussion, “Charmain, do you want to change your last name?”
“Well, when Harry and Hermione came to adopt me they introduced themselves as Mr. and Mrs. Granger,” she said laughing.
“I knew that was going to come back to bite me in the arse,” Harry whispered to Hermione. Hermione gave Harry a stern look as she tried to stop herself from bursting out laughing.
“I’d like to change my name to Charmain Aiglentine Granger,” she smiled.
“Is that alright with you two?” Arthur asked.
“Actually that’s a good idea Charmain,” Hermione said out loud, “It would cause less suspicion. Due to Hermione’s fame, many witches and wizards had changed their last name to Granger so as to show their respect for the Muggle-born witch who had done so much for them.”
“Yes, I suppose it is,” Harry said, “It just might help keeping the press at bay”
“You aren’t disappointed, are you?” Charmain said looking at Harry.
“No,” Harry said. To tell you the truth, Harry would have liked Charmain to use his last name. However, he had to remember Charmain wasn’t his real daughter.
“Guess, you and Hermione will just have to have your own children,” Charmain said giggling when both of them blushed. Arthur Weasley immediately knew Molly would love the girl. He could just imagine the fuss Ginny would make when she got a hold of Charmain.
Hermione cheeks were still red when Harry said, “Shopping anyone?”
He was trying to get the thought of how babies came about out of his mind.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Four
“Do you like the blue ones or the green ones?” Hermione asked when they were buying robes. Harry had gotten out of it by going off to Flourish and Blotts to surprise Charmain with a few books to start her own collection and Hermione noticed he was taking an awfully long time that is unless he had wandered into Quality Quidditch Supplies.
“I think you look good in blue,” Charmain said. They were finished buying her robes and Charmain had decided Hermione needed some new robes, but what Hermione didn’t know was that Charmain was thinking she could wear them when she and Harry started dating. Hermione just thought Charmain was being sweet.
“Yes, we’ll leave the green robes to you and Harry and your eyes,” Hermione said.
“You think he has nice eyes?” Charmain asked nonchalantly.
“Oh, my gosh they’re gorgeous,” Hermione said forgetting to catch herself and then blushing furiously when she realized what she had said. “Hey, you, no mind games allowed!”
“I’m not playing games it was just a question.”
“Uh, huh, ready to go pick out what kind of room you want?” Hermione asked changing the topic.
“I know, I want it to be like the sky,” Charmain answered.
“Why is that?”
“Well, I always remembered that when I was little I would try to look out the windows of the dormitories and I was too short. It isn’t a problem now, but back then I used to love to look out at the sky while I learned to read, but I couldn’t see,” Charmain explained.
“Then you’re going to love the room I picked for you,” Hermione smiled deviously.
“Why?”
“Nope, it’s a surprise,” Hermione said not budging. “What kind of bed do you want?”
“I think the size I had was nice, but I want different sheets. Anything but white,” Charmain said rolling her eyes.
“You sure, because we could get you a double instead of a twin?”
“Yes, I really only had a problem with the sheets,” Charmain answered as they walked down the street. Charmain had to hold Hermione’s hand because Hermione was afraid she’d get lost, but Charmain chose not to argue.
When they got to the shop that sold linens Charmain ended up choosing a light green color for her bedding. Hermione told her that they could enchant her ceiling to be like the sky so Charmain chose a light blue for her walls because the sky wouldn’t always be as blue as she wanted. Her dresser and desk were light oak and Hermione said they could make her a closet. Then she asked about books.
“That’s a surprise too,” Hermione said.
“So, I’m guessing you have a lot of books?” Charmain said knowing that it would only be a surprise if it was good news.
“Something like that,” Hermione answered, and Charmain knew from when Harry had said the same phrase earlier that she was right.
“Where’s Harry?” Charmain asked as they walked around aimlessly.
“Good question,” Hermione said looking around. It was beginning to get dark and she wanted to get back home.
“Why don’t we finish up buying the odds and ends you’ll need,” Hermione said going towards another small shop.
“Like what?”
“Like a toothbrush for instance,” Hermione said not really knowing what else she needed. She was nine so she was hoping that she wasn’t too high maintenance just yet.
“Oh, yeah, I’ll probably be needing one of those tonight,” Charmain agreed.
After they were done buying Charmain everything from the toothbrush to shampoo they began looking for Harry, and Hermione found him just where she thought she would, Quality Quidditch Supplies.
“Hey, you two, have a nice time shopping?” Harry asked.
Hermione and Charmain nodded.
“Good, because I did a bit of my own,” Harry said and held up a bag from Flourish and Blotts and one from the store he had just come out of.
“What’d you get?” Charmain asked.
“Well, I got you a book about the Chudley cannons, a couple snitches because mine are getting warn out and that library card you asked for. Also, a few new books all your own. I didn’t know what you liked so I asked them what eleven-year-olds read,” Harry said.
“I’m not eleven years old though?” Charmain said confused.
“Well, your reading level is so I figured you would want something new,” Harry answered.
“Thanks!” Charmain smiled.
“I’m impressed Harry I thought you’d come back with a new set of quidditch balls and a broom,” Hermione smiled.
Harry looked like he was a little kid who had just gotten caught at something.
“Harry you didn’t…”
“They won’t be in till next week?” Harry said hopefully.
Charmain’s jaw was about to hit the ground. Were they serious did he really get her a broom?
“Are you serious?” Charmain choked.
“Well, I was hoping I could train you, I was quite interested when I saw you catch that snitch. I used to be a seeker on the Gryffindor team when I was at Hogwarts, and I thought starting early wouldn’t hurt anyone. Besides the Weasley’s have a traditional quidditch game at every get-together, and I want my family to be prepared.” Harry said. Hermione was looking a bit pale.
“Wow, just wow,” Charmain said and hugged Harry.
“Oh, come on Hermione I know you want in on this,” Harry said looking at her still surprised face.
“Harry are you insane! Flying’s dangerous!” Hermione said anxiously not caring if Charmain heard.
“Hermione I’ll be with her the whole time!” Harry said.
“Fine, but I want no part in it,” Hermione answered coldly. “I’m going to go get your room ready Charmain, you stay with Harry for a little while,” and in the blink of an eye Hermione apparated to their flat.
“Harry I don’t think Hermione’s happy about you teaching me to fly. Maybe you shouldn’t,” Charmain said not wanting to cause them to put any distance between them.
“Charmain you listen, now Hermione may act like she hates the idea, but she was always really happy when we won matches, I think she secretly loves quidditch.”
“Maybe she loves you,” Charmain said indifferently.
“I wish…HEY!” Harry said indignantly.
“I think I hit a nerve, or a soft spot,” Charmain giggled.
“What kind of books have you been reading young lady?” Harry asked trying to act a little peeved, but failing miserably. Secretly, he was glad that he might now have someone besides Ron to talk to about Hermione.
“Anything that the orphanage carries, and that’s all I’m saying. You can’t deny faith,” Charmain answered.
“You don’t think she’d be too mad if I took you out for ice cream?” Harry asked changing the subject. They walked towards Florean Fortescue’s.
“No, I wager she’d think it was a nice gesture,” Charmain answered.
“Good because I really want a sundae what about you?”
“I like pistachio,” Charmain answered.
“What kind of kid likes pistachio,” Harry thought out loud.
“I do,” Charmain answered cheerfully.
By the time they got home it was nine o’clock and Hermione was sitting on the couch reading.
“Hey what took you two so long?” Hermione asked looking up from her book.
“We went for ice cream,” Charmain answered.
“Aw, that was nice of you Harry,” Hermione said and Charmain glanced back at Harry.
“Yeah, well how’s the room coming along?” Harry asked ignoring Charmain’s glance.
“I don’t know its owner has the final word,” Hermione said.
“Where is it?” Charmain asked looking at the two doors she had to choose from. One was Hermione’s room and the other was the bathroom.
“Neither of those, your room’s upstairs,” Harry answered.
“Oh,” Charmain said.
“But while you’re here, the door to the right of the living room is Hermione’s bedroom and the other one is one of the bathrooms, there’s another upstairs,” Harry said.
“You mean you two don’t share a room?” Charmain asked sneakily.
“No, now come on up you go,” Hermione, said motioning to the stairs and playing it like she wasn’t blushing thirty shades of magenta.
“Your rooms at the end of the hall, it used to be a library,” Hermione said.
“Wow,” Charmain said when she walked into the room. Her ceiling really did reflect the sky and there was a bookshelf on the wall. There was the desk, dresser, and bed she and Hermione had bought together and white doors that led to her closet. Then she saw the window seat and ran over to look out to the nice view it had. “Thank you,” Charmain said coming back to hug them.
“You’re welcome, what’s ours is yours, except for my file cabinets, but I doubt you’ll try to get into them. I keep pretty good locking charms on them,” Harry said.
“Don’t worry I hate documents,” Charmain said referring to the adoption papers and the like.
“You and I have yet another thing in common,” Hermione said smiling. “Harry’s documents make a very large mess in his office, which is right across the hall. The bathroom was to your right when you come up the stairs and Harry’s room is across from it if you ever need anything.”
“Alright, I think I’m going to leave you two alone and go to sleep now. What time is breakfast?” Charmain asked.
“Whenever you wake up, I’ll be here all day,” Harry said.
“Yes,” Charmain said happy she didn’t have to get up at seven in the morning unless she wanted to.
“Goodnight, Charmain,” Hermione said kissing her head, and Harry followed.
“Do you uh, want to be tucked in or anything?” Harry asked. He wasn’t sure what the cut-off age for it was.
“No, but it’s nice to know you’re willing,” Charmain answered thinking about a few of the people at the orphanage who wouldn’t do that unless you paid them, like Ms. Charles.
“Okay, goodnight,” Harry said and joined Hermione back on the couch.
“The kid’s brave I’ll give her that,” Hermione laughed putting her book down.
“Yeah, she’ll make a great Gryffindor,” Harry smiled.
“You can’t wait to watch her play quidditch can you?” Hermione smirked.
“Nope, and you’ll be right their with me. She’s got your last name,” Harry reminded her.
“Yes, but she’s being influenced by your rebelliousness nonetheless, I can tell. I still can’t believe you ordered her a broom,” Hermione said shaking her head.
“Well, someone had to,” Harry shrugged.
“Yes, but she can’t even take it to Hogwarts for two more years, as far as I know the first years not having brooms rule stands,” Hermione countered.
“Hey, I never did get a look at those papers, when’s her birthday?” Harry asked.
“I looked at them while you were gone,” Hermione said snuggling up to him. She was already in her pajamas.
“Really, you took a shower too, your hair smells nice,” Harry said and Hermione secretly swooned.
“Thanks.”
“Just making an observation,” Harry said not wanting to sound, well, he didn’t really know, but he had noted when Charmain said ‘leave you two alone.’ The kid wasn’t one to feel unwanted and Harry didn’t think taking in her scent would help prove her wrong, that they were just friends.
“Her birthday’s January, 4th, she’s just over a meter and a half tall (about 4 ft. 10 in., again tall kid), and her parents were Marquis Aiglentine and Ciara Malfoy. Before you even call Draco and interrupt a newlywed shag session he and Gin are probably having it’s a very common name in France,” Hermione said looking at Harry who hadn’t moved, but she could tell by looking into his eyes that the wheels in his mind were turning.
“I wasn’t going to say a word,” Harry said a few moments later.
“Sure, but you can’t deny that the blonde hair does kind of resemble Malfoy’s,” Hermione said.
“So, her birthday’s in January? She’s almost ten, wow, they sure do grow up fast,” Harry said smiling.
“I was thinking that it is sort of odd that we aren’t even old enough to be her biological parents. I almost think she will come to look at us as an aunt and uncle,” Hermione said and Harry brought his arm around to hold her to him. He really liked snuggling with her.
“Hopefully a cool aunt and uncle,” Harry said smiling.
“What are you smiling about?” Hermione asked.
“Does there have to be a reason? You, Charmain, and me it’s a beautiful picture don’t you think? In fact I can’t wait to get one to hang above the fireplace.”
“That would be nice. I just can’t believe I signed a marriage license today,” Hermione said rolling her eyes.
“What am I not husband material?” Harry asked and Hermione didn’t know what to say.
“I wouldn’t know I haven’t had a good romp with you yet,” Hermione smiled.
“Is that why you don’t ever keep a guy? No one to satisfy you in bed?” Harry laughed and Hermione jumped him because both knew that wasn’t true, but he began to tickle her furiously to get her off.
“Ah, stop, Harry!”
“Come on say you bet I’m good, come on,” Harry said still tickling.
“You know I didn’t mean that! Ah!” Hermione said when he finally pinned her to the couch. Her hair was sprawled on the cushions and a powerful arms to the side of each of her shoulders.
“Say it, come on,” Harry smirked.
“Alright, I bet Harry Potter’s good in bed,” Hermione said and blushed despite all her attempts not to.
“What? Oh, thank you, but I wanted you to say I’m good husband material,” Harry laughed. Hermione blushed even more.
“Fine, you’re good husband material?”
“And…”
“And what?”
“And I could so satisfy you in bed,” Harry smirked and then his eyes went wide with the knowledge of what he’d just said. It definitely didn’t sound like that in his head.
“Harry…” Hermione said unsure of what to do about a very warm feeling spreading through her.
“Hermione, I’m sorry,” Harry still didn’t know what to say, but he also hadn’t moved from being on top of her and his body was becoming aware of the suggestive position.
“Don’t be,” Hermione said shaking her head.
“Huh?” Harry asked confused.
“I think Charmain was right, we just need to be left alone…” Hermione said and was starting to laugh thinking about everyone that tried to put them in these situations. Charmain had just succeeded.
“We do, don’t we?” Harry said and Hermione smiled and then her eyes got wide at the realization of what he meant.
There were only a few seconds for her to prepare for the meeting of his eyes to hers, and then it happened.
Harry leaned down and gingerly touched his lips to Hermione’s, and then everything felt right. Instantly Hermione responded and lifted her hands to run through his hair. The kiss slowly became more passionate. One of his hands cupped her head to his. She made a noise in the back of her throat that drove him insane.
Hermione couldn’t believe what was happening to them, and what wild crazy part of her had decided it was right to do this. To snog with her best friend on their living room couch. Charmain was just upstairs for Merlin’s sake! Hermione lightly pulled away before anything too risqué could come about.
“It could be dangerous if we were left alone for too long,” Hermione whispered.
“I know,” Harry sighed. There were a thousand things running through his mind and a million emotions playing through his body. He had just kissed his best friend and it was the most wonderful kiss he’d shared with anyone. Hermione was probably afraid of him for taking advantage of the situation.
“Harry, I think I’m going to go to bed now, good night,” Hermione said silently leaving the couch and avoiding the awkward silence that was bound to set in. She didn’t kiss him on the cheek as usual ritual before they separated to their respectable rooms. She absolutely couldn’t bring herself to do it after what had just happened. What Harry had just made her say? The kiss they had just shared.
Harry’s mind finally registered that she was leaving and quickly he said something, “Hermione do you think it’s faith?”
“What?” Hermione asked confused.
“Never mind, good night,” Harry said and sauntered up the stairs for a night of tossing and turning.
Charmain slept with a smile on her face knowing the words Harry had just said. They were finally beginning to see.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Five
The next morning Harry woke up, and went through a phase of wondering if last night had just been a dream. Hermione left him a note, in magical writing, on his bedroom door to say that she had gone into work and wouldn’t be home until noon. She also said to take his mind off of last night and that they could talk about it later.
Harry looked over to the clock and found that she must have gotten a very early morning since it was only seven thirty. He also felt his stomach churn at the thought of addressing their kiss later. It was something that he didn’t want to discuss. Couldn’t they just know it was right and move on?
“Hermione,” Harry breathed wishing that every time he said her name it didn’t leave him with a chill. There was something about last night and something about how it just happened. It didn’t sit right with him, and he knew that Hermione probably spent her first hour at work thinking the same, or at least he hoped so and that she couldn’t just blow off a snog that easily.
He decided to shower and make breakfast before Charmain woke up. After taking a long shower, Harry decided long sweatpants and a plain t-shirt would be appropriate for his first full day with his new daughter.
He then went in to peak on Charmain, just to make sure she was okay. He couldn’t believe that the first night she was here he and Hermione had decided it was the right time to snog. A child enters their house and then they decide it’s the right time? It all seemed a bit backwards, but faith works in funny ways, Harry reminded himself.
Harry looked at her angelic face as she slept and saw a smile on it. Her blonde hair was an absolute mess and it looked like she moved a lot when she slept, but it was certainly precious. Then he reminded himself that he would probably wake her and should go drink some coffee.
When he got downstairs he felt like something wasn’t right. It was like an ice cube had been dropped right down the back of his neck and went until it melted from the heat roaring down his spine. The uneasiness that the contrast created sat low in his gut.
Again Harry thought of Hermione, but in a worried sense. He knew Charmain was all right, but he hadn’t seen Hermione that morning. So he quickly scribbled a note to her and sent Hedwig off to the ministry. She would most likely scold him for being so irrational and again for sending her a personal owl while she was working.
Harry found that he and Mrs. Weasley shared one thing in common: when they were nervous they baked. The only difference was that Harry preferred the muggle way. So by nine the kitchen was decorated with cakes, muffins, and a few pastries. He had also started a pumpkin pie when Charmain wondered downstairs.
Harry reminded himself again that she wasn’t a baby. She had showered and gotten dressed. He hair was still a little damp.
“Good morning,” she said smiling.
“‘Morning, would you like anything to eat?” Harry asked.
“Yes, what am I allowed to have?” Charmain asked eyeing the cakes, but knowing she probably wouldn’t be allowed something so sweet for breakfast. They always had hot or cold cereal at the orphanage. On Sundays though, they usually made something special.
“Well, as long as you can keep a small secret from Hermione, anything you like,” Harry said.
“Oh, and what’s the small secret,” Charmain asked, but not before picking up a blueberry muffin.
“That I let you eat sweets for breakfast,” Harry answered.
Charmain surveyed the kitchen and noticed that the counters were completely covered in everything from pumpkin pasties to treacle fudge. “Do you always bake this much?”
“No,” Harry answered honestly. He really wished Ron were here, but they weren’t going to see him until later when they joined the Weasleys for dinner.
“Oh, well, for whatever reason you decided to make them, these muffins are awfully delicious,” Charmain complimented and Harry thanked her. “Is Hermione coming home soon?” Charmain asked after that.
“Yes, but how did you know she was gone?” Harry asked.
“I would’ve figured I would see both of you here. She said you eat meals together, I assumed you prepared them together,” Charmain shrugged.
“Charmain, you don’t have any relatives do you?”
“No, did you find that I do?” Charmain asked suspiciously wondering if there really was an aunt of uncle she didn’t know of. She always thought it was weird that all of her family was dead. Most of the other kids in the orphanage were the same, and it was just so surreal. That people like the Weasleys had family scattered through three countries, and they didn’t have anyone.
“Well, I just wanted to know if you knew anything at all about them? Perhaps your mother’s name?” Harry inquired. He wondered if she was in the same situation he had been at that age, with no knowledge of his parents at all, or if there was something more to her. As an auror he had a nature for feelings, and the cold one he had felt on his way downstairs today had put a curiosity bug in his system for the whole day.
“No, I don’t, but everyone tells me I look just like her. I remember hearing some women in the orphanage talking about her ending up with my father. They called him a…well a bad word, but I’m not sure because it was in French. I was born there, they told me, but the government allowed me to become a citizen of England since France doesn’t have the orphanages for war orphans,” Charmain said taking another bite of her muffin.
“What was the word they called your father?” Harry asked. Charmain looked alarmed that he asked. “You said you weren’t sure if it was a bad word since it was in French. I won’t scold you for telling me a word you don’t know the meaning to, Charmain,” Harry said trying to coax it out of her. He figured that might come back to bite him in the arse later on when she was older because children tended to remember those sorts of promises, but this was for investigative purposes.
“I just…don’t want to tell you, okay?” Charmain said looking down at her last bite of muffin.
“I…all right,” Harry sighed and realized that she was his daughter, not a witness. He needed to learn the boundaries between work and family.
“Did you find out who they were…their names?” Charmain asked. “Is that why you want to know if I knew anything about them? Were they criminals or something?” Charmain asked looking absolutely crestfallen. Her green eyes were glassy and her face just fell.
Harry mentally kicked himself and stopped stirring the brownie mix.
“Charmain, I’m sorry for upsetting you, but I only know their names. I can promise you no matter what I find out about your past I’ll still love you like my own daughter. I know what people are like. They hear a name and jump to conclusions, but I won’t do that, and I certainly won’t blame you or treat you any differently than my own future children,” Harry said caringly.
“So you do want to have children with Hermione!” Charmain giggled.
Harry was caught off guard. He hadn’t thought about Hermione since that morning, and now the feeling of her lips against his came flooding back. He began to blush, but knew that was what she wanted. She was a schemer, and so far she had gotten the best of him. He didn’t want to think what ideas their visit to the Weasleys would bring her.
“Charmain, why you little,” Charmain got a head start running around the furniture and through the flat. They went upstairs and downstairs until when passing the kitchen Charmain stopped.
“I got you now!” Harry said running up behind her and swinging her around. He soon stopped seeing the reason for the sudden halt to their game of chase. There was a stream of smoke coming from the oven. Harry had forgotten about his batch of brownies.
“FIRE!” Charmain yelped running for the door. Harry sighed in relief that she at least knew what to do in case it happened, but quickly pulled out his wand and put it out before she could open the door. Then a fragrance charm was cast to erase the burning stench.
“Sorry,” Harry said.
“Is it okay now?” Charmain asked sitting.
“Yes,” Harry said letting out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding in.
“Hermione’s the more practical one of the pair isn’t she?” Charmain asked from the couch. She wasn’t being insulting, but making another observation.
“Hey, wait until you meet Ron, I’m at least more responsible than him,” Harry said looking over at her.
“Harry, mate, don’t lie to the girl. Well, I suppose you are a parent now, I guess I’ll have to live with you trying to make yourself look more superior,” Ron smirked, and Harry about jumped out of his sweatpants. He had no idea Ron was coming over early, and had long forgotten the fact that he had a key to his flat, as he pulled out his wand. “Whoa, no need to duel!” Ron said putting his hands up.
Charmain’s mouth was agape and she was in complete ah.
“Ron you scared the bloody…hippogriffs out of me!” Harry said quickly remembering that along with no snogging in front of children went no cursing in front of them, or at least he knew Hermione would disapprove.
“Dad said something about you and Hermione getting a marriage license, but she took away your right to curse words too. Man mate, she’s got you whipped,” Ron laughed. Harry pulled him into a man hug and Ron added, “Hippogriffs? Harry, that’s just, well bad doesn’t quite cover it.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Harry said. He looked over at Charmain and tried not to laugh at her wide green eyes and surprised beyond belief look.
“So, who’s this, you haven’t brought home a new girl I haven’t met have you? She’s absolutely beautiful Harry, how could you hold out on your best mate!” Ron said walking over to Charmain who was blushing a furious red. Ron Weasley had grown out of his awkwardness and was now quite the charmer.
“This, is my daughter, and I expect you to pass on to all your little nephews…hands off until she’s married. Charmain Aiglentine Granger, this is Ronald Mathias Weasley,” Harry said.
“Pleased to meet you,” Ron said shaking her hand.
“You…I’m a big fan…I…” Charmain was speechless. Ron grinned. It was a rare moment that someone noticed his stardom on the Cannons before they immediately ran to get Harry’s autograph. The little girl had already made his day.
“Charmain’s a big fan of the Cannons. I figure I’d take her to one of your games as part of her birthday present,” Harry said.
“My birthday! You know my birthday?” Charmain asked not remembering him reading her papers. She was surprised and worried at what else they said about her, as anyone would get nervous about someone judging them from a ministry file.
“Yes, I figured it would be important to know my daughter’s birthday,” Harry said in reply.
“How old will you be Charmain?” Ron asked.
“Ten,” She answered.
“Maybe I will tell my nephews hands off,” Ron said thoughtfully. He recognized her resemblance to the French Fleur that had been around his fourth year at Hogwarts. He also noticed her eyes were the same color as Harry’s, but they were more mystical. “So starting at Hogwarts next term?”
“I hope so,” Charmain said. It was the first anyone had mentioned about her attending Hogwarts. She was told that she would have enough money to do so, but wasn’t sure if Harry and Hermione would send her there. They might want to send her to Beauxbatons
“She’s very smart,” Harry said.
“I’ll bet, how does she handle a broom?” Ron asked knowing that the knowledge was Hermione’s concern.
“She handles a snitch like she was born with one already in her hand,” Harry said enjoying being able to gloat about her. He really liked the proud father thing.
“Hmm…maybe we can get her a few minutes with the Cannon’s seeker, see if she can show him a thing or two,” Ron said.
“That would be the coolest thing…since chapter books,” Charmain said thinking about the last thing in her life that had been exciting, and with that comparison Ron sent Harry a look.
“Where’s Hermione?” Ron asked looking around and then he spied that Harry had baked up a storm in the kitchen. There were cakes and cookies everywhere. “Not trying to out-do my mum are you?” Ron found about Harry’s baking fetish in the summer after their seventh year when they had stayed at Grimmauld Place, and found Harry under a tower of pumpkin pastries. He found out later that Harry had lost his virginity the previous night. “What happened?” Ron asked grabbing a muffin from the counter.
“Well, um nothing in particular.”
“Come on Harry you only bake when you hope it will get something off your mind. What…or maybe perhaps who is it this time?” Ron asked and Charmain couldn’t help it she giggled.
“Harry you didn’t…you just adopted her and you s-h-a-g-g-e-d someone her first night here?” Ron said unbelievably.
“Ron, you dolt, she can read books as thick as your head. She knows how to spell!” Harry said tightly and Charmain blushed. She had heard a few of the older kids talking about that word, and she knew that it was something very private.
“Oh, so it is a girl. Hermione didn’t…” Ron said glancing from Harry’s face to his trousers and Harry blushed wrathfully. He thanked Merlin that Charmain at least had no clue as to what that meant yet.
“Charmain, would you mind if I talked to Ron alone a moment, before he embarrasses himself anymore,” Harry said.
“I think you’re the one who’s embarrassed. Did Hermione kiss you goodnight last night? Was it like fate, when the prince kisses Snow White?” Charmain said wide-eyed.
“Charmain, please,” Harry said tightly not wanting to get angry with her.
“Fine,” Charmain sighed she went to the top of the stairs to listen, but Harry knew better and took Ron into the bathroom and cast a silencing charm.
“Nice choice for privacy, but I thought I’d take the chance to tell you she’s a great kid,” Ron smiled and made himself comfortable on the lid of the toilet.
“Yes, too great, and unfortunately too much like your mother. She likes to medal in my affairs,” Harry sighed.
“Oh, so you and Hermione are having an affair, is that it now!” Ron said delighted. He was in his first long-term relationship since Hogwarts with Luna Lovegood, and just couldn’t wait until Harry and Hermione cracked and fell for each other.
“No, but you’re right. There is something bothering me.” Harry said. He hadn’t told something so personal to Ron in a long time. They didn’t see each other as often as they used to, only three times a week instead of everyday, and if he was touring with the Cannons sometimes longer.
“So out with it I don’t have all bloody day, well I do, but it’ll kill me if I have to wait another bleeding second for you to explain why you’ve turned your kitchen into an advertisement for Tessa Mills’ Packaged Pastries (a new shop in Diagon Alley with products similar to Little Debbie).”
“Hermione-and-I-crossed-that-line-between-friendship-and-I-don’t-know-what-to-tell-her-when-she-comes-home,” Harry said quickly and luckily Ron was used to this and just strained a bit to understand.
“So did you do the naughty, what the hell happened?” Ron asked.
“We kissed, well snogged actually, on the couch last night after Charmain went to sleep,” Harry said.
“I bet the little bugger planned it, go Charmain,” Ron laughed.
“RON! I highly doubt she planned for us to snog! She’s ten!” Harry said.
“And she’s a pretty little girl, probably had the little boys at the orphanage all over her,” Ron laughed.
“No, actually they didn’t seem to like her too well, their attitudes towards her kind of reminded me of when we first met Hermione,” Harry explained.
“Damn, that’s my worst nightmare. A girl who looks like a veela and talks like Hermione, poor little buggers,” Ron said feeling for the little blokes in the orphanage.
“Hey, Hermione’s beautiful,” Harry said and slapped himself at Ron’s told-you-so look.
“I really think this kid’s going to be good for you Harry. I mean we’ve been trying to get the two of you together for months, well my mum has for years, and I think a ten-year-old has managed to make you more uncomfortable than you’ve been around a girl since fourth year. It’s bloody hilarious when you think about the irony of it all.”
“Yeah, well stop thinking about that and start thinking about what the hell I’m going to do.” Harry said. Ron wasn’t helping him at all. They’d been in the bathroom ten minutes and gotten absolutely nowhere.
“Nothing, just talk to her about it.” Ron said.
“That’s it? I haven’t spoken to her since last night!”
“What did she say after the kiss?” Ron asked. So to make things easier Harry went into a full story of what had happened starting after they put Charmain to bed. He even told Ron about her parents and his face grew very surprised when the Malfoy name was mentioned.
“Damn if I had known Draco had a sister that was part veela I might not have hated him so much, nah,” Ron laughed as they moved on through the story stopping at when Hermione shut her bedroom door and Harry went to his room. He even told Ron about the chill he got this morning.
“Yeah, I think you’ve got it bad if she’s giving you chills.”
“No, that had nothing to do with it I wasn’t thinking about Hermione when that happened…it was very random. Then, I got scared and thought about her, but I’ve done that since I was fifteen.” Harry said.
“Yes, and we’ve all thought you’ve had a thing for her since then. I was always surprised she wasn’t your first shag, and Merlin knows that I was pissed for a few weeks because I had had a crush on her myself, but I got over it. In fact I think it was good for me,” Ron said.
“So, you weren’t mad at me for making you fly fifteen laps around the pitch at that one practice?” Harry said. He had been captain and punished Ron. Ron was very peeved at him the following weeks, but Harry thought it was because of the practice. In fact it was because Hermione had come to watch Harry coach instead of him practice and he thought foolishly that Harry was trying to make himself look superior to Ron.
“Hell no, but I suppose it was better you thought that,” Ron replied. “That’s not the point. What are you going to tell her?” Ron asked.
“That’s why we’re in the damn bathroom, to figure it out!” Harry said frustrated.
“Well, I know you aren’t really great with words, but you have to say something. You can’t just go and snog her without telling her where that puts you in the relationship,” Ron said. ‘I’ve been hanging around Ginny too much,’ Ron decided.
“You’ve been hanging around Ginny too much,” Harry remarked.
“Yeah I know,” Ron said, and then they heard the door to the flat open.
“Charmain, Harry, I’m home!” Hermione called.
“She wasn’t supposed to be home for another two hours,” Harry said frantically as he heard Charmain come downstairs.
“She’s going to rat us out isn’t she?” Ron said in reference to Charmain, and sure enough the next thing they heard was Hermione’s stern voice, “What are they doing in the bathroom together?” She was thinking they were brewing a potion. Ever since they made one in Myrtle’s bathroom when people secretly met in bathrooms that was the first thought that came to her mind, until she walked in on Ginny and Draco in the prefects bathroom, but she hoped that wasn’t the case with Harry and Ron.
Harry quickly cast a charm to temporarily remove the apparition wards from the flat and Ron winked and popped out. He then tried to exit the bathroom as inconspicuously as possible.
“What were you and Ron doing in the bathroom together?” Hermione asked suspiciously.
“Nothing,” Harry chirped.
“Liar, liar, pants on fire,” Charmain laughed.
“Seems someone says that isn’t true,” Hermione said looking to Charmain.
“Fine, we were talking about manly stuff,” Harry said not thinking of anything else.
“What kind of manly stuff?” Hermione inquired.
“Top secret, sorry but you’re a girl, you too Charmain,” Harry said going to the kitchen.
“You know what I’ll find out later, but I came home early to talk to you,” Hermione said to Harry and Charmain smirked behind her.
“Oh, uh, why?” Harry asked not quite ready to jump into discussing the previous night.
“It’s about something I was researching for a case,” Hermione lied.
“Oh,” Harry’s face fell.
“Can we go to your study and talk?” Hermione asked starting up the steps. Harry was thinking how adorable she looked in the muggle suite she wore to work. It was a cadet blue and her hair was drawn back into a bun.
“I’m sorry to have to leave you again Charmain,” Harry said. He was supposed to be spending the day with her. Now, he and Hermione would both be working.
“That’s alright, take all the time you need,” Charmain said walking to her room as they stopped in front of the study.
“I’m sorry I had to lie to you Harry, but what I really want to talk about is Charmain,” Hermione said after they entered the study, which had a permanent silencing charm on it.
“Oh,” Harry said again. He was mad at himself for being disappointed they weren’t going to talk about last night. ‘Uh, Ron’s right, I’ve lost it,’ Harry said and sat down at his desk.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Six
Harry and Hermione sat in silence for about two minutes while Hermione decided how to unveil the information she had found at work. When she arrived at the office she found that Mrs. Weasley had already gotten news of the adoption and ordered that she take off for a while too. Hermione wasn’t too pleased, but decided not to put up a fight when Charmain deserved a little more attention for the first few weeks in a new environment.
Then, as she tidied up her desk and prepared to leave it for the long weeks of vacation she came across an envelope with a copy of the official adoption papers. They had been processed and returned. Hermione figured there must have been more information in these files that were more private and not kept to be seen by anyone besides her guardians. She as always, was right, and found two family trees and one file containing written records of each of her advances and signs of magic. She had performed some form of magic everyday since the day she had been born, and that was very unusual. The average for a child not having attended school and performing magic was about once a month depending on the child and their MBC (Magical Blood Content). Obviously Charmain’s was very high, and blatantly abnormal.
So Hermione went down to find out the cause for such an occurrence and had decided it was imperative she tell Harry the possibilities. Their little Charmain was a very powerful being.
“Harry I don’t really know how to tell you this,” Hermione started. She was at a loss for words.
“Hermione as Charmain’s parents we have to communicate for her well being, now just…say it,” Harry said. He was still a little unhappy about not talking about their kiss and didn’t in a million years think that this thing about Charmain could be so extravagant that Hermione was stalling.
‘She was a great kid, but what did Hermione find out? That she was Voldemort’s daughter?’ Harry’s face flashed with fear at the thought.
“She isn’t, um evil, right?” He asked timidly.
“No, Harry, don’t be ridiculous!” Hermione said.
“Well, then what is it?” Harry asked again.
“She, well first of all I’ve been ordered on a vacation until further notice. The doings of Molly Weasley, of course, and it isn’t such a bad idea since Charmain deserves to spend quality time with us. I think we’ll make very good use of it. We can go to the park tomorrow, and Ginny and I will take her shopping again next week. By the way did I tell you that Ginny wants to have a baby, isn’t that something. Charmain would love to play with it…”
“HERMIONE, GET A GRIP!” Harry said loudly to snap her out of her babbling. “Please, just tell me what’s so important before it kills me!”
“Thanks, I’m sorry,” said Hermione sheepishly.
“It’s alright, now spill.”
“I was cleaning my desk since it would be unattended and found that Mr. Weasley had sent us a copy of the legal adoption papers and more information on Charmain. We had a few, but this contained many files. So, I sat down with some tea and read them. There were two family trees, one of the Malfoys and Aiglentines. The Malfoys aren’t too spectacular, but Draco is Charmain’s second cousin once removed. In other words Lucius and Ciara Malfoy’s fathers were cousins. Draco and Ciara were second cousins, and so Ciara’s daughter would be his second cousin once removed. I know, but it gets even more complicated,” Hermione said when she saw Harry’s face scrunched in confusion.
All he had wanted to know was that they were distantly related, but she went and confused him. He liked it though because it reminded him of how smart she was. She looked absolutely radiant when she was on the brink of discovering something in a Nancy Drew sort of way.
“Harry, are you listening?” Hermione asked when the confusion on his face changed into a cloudy expression.
“What, yes, go on, what else was there?” Harry asked.
“Okay, so as I was saying it gets more complicated. The Aiglentine family tree goes back much farther than the Malfoy’s. The Malfoys stay in France and have a long lineage of dukes and so on, but the Aiglentines actually began in England. They don’t have a long line of knights or kings, but they have ancient magic in them, and I suppose a bit of royalty depending on what your main focus is. From the old times when the muggle and magical world still coincided, before they segregated and separated themselves from one another. Do you remember Arthurian Legend Harry?” Hermione asked.
“Uh, which one?” Harry asked knowing there were many, but she had caught his interest with more than her adorableness. Now he really wanted to know what she found out about their little Charmain.
“It doesn’t matter. The most important thing is Morgan Le Fay’s deception of her brother Arthur and she conceiving a son with the help of the dark witch Mab; Morgan liked to think herself a witch too, and it got her in all sorts of trouble. So, Morgan Le Fay’s child, her son, Mordrid, kills Arthur. Mordrid was the Aiglentine’s last relative in England.” Hermione said trying to make it as clear as possible. The family tree had been very confusing, but that’s why she was at work for two hours. She was deciding the most productive way to make it believable and still have it make sense. She still couldn’t trust it.
“Ugh, I forgot about the part where she sleeps with her brother,” Harry said making a face, and smiling when he saw Hermione almost laugh. Then she put on a stern impression that would even make McGonagall proud.
“Harry stop it, this is serious! Mordrid had bed a servant woman before he died and she ran to her home country of France to sell the baby because she couldn’t afford it. Especially since it was magical and dangerous, but very valuable. The baby was given the surname Aiglentine, which was really its father, Mordrid’s, middle name. The baby was a boy and ended up being raised as a squire. So, the line continued. The Aiglentine’s had consecutive sons. In other words Mordrid’s son married and his wife bore a son, his son married, and they had a son, but the one who didn’t marry bore a daughter.”
“So, is the daughter Charmain? That doesn’t make sense though, because Marquis Aiglentine and Ciara Malfoy were married. You told me yourself yesterday,” Harry countered remembering how she had told him on the couch and the impending conversation and tickle-fight it had started.
“Nice observation, but it must have been before they married. Marquis wasn’t married to this woman, and that’s why it shamed the family name. The baby and its mother were killed because he was a coward. Charmain was his second daughter. In other words Charmain would’ve had a stepsister. See this is the interesting part because none of Mordrid’s decedents lived long enough to have two children. Marquis was the first, and the first to have daughters.”
“How could it have been covered up though? He should’ve been sent to the French equivalent of Azkaban,” Harry said wondering how something could fly under the French Ministry’s radar. During the war all law enforcement branches of the ministries were very tactful and efficient.
“All the ancient magic that had gone into creating her very distant grandfather, Mordrid, was put into Charmain’s blood. That’s the only explanation to why her MBC is so high. The papers didn’t say anything about her relatives after Mordrid being exceptionally powerful. It was some sort of recessive gene. The same magic that made it possible for Morgan to trick her brother and for Mab to create a warrior bold enough to kill Arthur; it had been carried on silently for centuries until Charmain was born and it landed in her veins. No one can handle that much magic in his or her blood as a baby, and that’s why I’m almost certain…she’s a Fate. Only females can be Fates.” Hermione said expecting a big reaction from Harry, but unlike her he really didn’t appreciate History of Magic.
“Yes, but what in the hell is a Fate?” Harry asked never hearing of such a thing. It couldn’t have been a magical creature, but surely it wasn’t similar to a goblin.
“A fate knows things. Now, the Greeks they had three, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos who actually decided the length of a person’s life, but before you fear Charmain is far from any power of that sort. These modern Fates can see the future; they’re better than a seer because they can manipulate people. As a baby a spell must have been cast on Charmain to shield her from her powers, or some of them. They couldn’t have possibly hid them all, and that’s why I think she still has the power to manipulate, even though it isn’t as strong as a grown Fate. Meaning that what she thinks is best for people, she can see that it happens. Nothing extreme, but if it’s left unattended it could become so,” Hermione said solemnly.
“That sounds like a bedtime story from hell,” Harry answered thinking about being a puppet on a
string for someone to toy with, but not Charmain, she was an angel not a manipulative puppeteer.
“Yes, well it’s something no one should have to bear. If her damn father had just told someone of his relative then they could’ve regulated the distribution of the extra magic. It just isn’t fair!” Hermione said angrily.
“Is that all you know, is that she’s a Fate? How did her parents die then?” Harry asked little parts of the tale not matching or making sense.
“That’s not the most important thing here Harry. The problem is finding out who put the shield on her, and when. She needs to know what she’ll be dealing with. Being a Fate is the most horrid of things, and right now she’s enjoying the power she doesn’t really understand is unique.” Hermione said. She was very worried about Charmain. She only wanted to help her. She wanted to start training her somehow on how to either use her power for good or resist it all together because temptation for a Fate could mean death for another person. A fully-grown Fate with a temper could be quite a dangerous opponent, and Hermione didn’t think that the young girl should find her history out in the wrong circumstances. She was young, but she needed to talk to Harry and get him to understand in order for them to take action.
“I know this isn’t the right time, but is that what happened last night? Was it just her power over us? Is that why you’re telling me this?” Harry said all of a sudden thinking about what she had said about her manipulating people. Was she trying to blame a nine-year-old girl on what had probably been brewing for years?
“Oh, don’t be so selfish! I’m telling you this because we need to help her and find a wizard, not because of some childish snog!” She regretted it right after she said it because his eyes flared. At the moment though she hardly thought what was, if anything in fact was happening between them, was hardly more important than the life of someone they were both responsible for.
“You do think that’s the only reason we kissed! What proof do you have except a hunch and some bloody paper work!”
“Harry, no…” it was no use.
“Fine, I’ll go right into the ministry and find your damn wizard! I’m going to prove that you’re wrong, and Charmain is nothing more than a miniature Molly Weasley! I just can’t believe this codswallop of a story! Fates haven’t existed for centuries! You’re trying to tell me because we crossed the miniscule friendship and relationship boundary and enjoyed it that a Fate’s come out of air and we’ve adopted her! Like I said, I’m off to the ministry. Send the Weasley’s my regards,” Harry said apparating out of the room so he didn’t worry Charmain as to why he was so utterly pissed. He hadn’t fully been listening and understanding that Hermione was concerned about Charmain or he might’ve caught that it was certainly plausible. He knew Hermione Granger better than anyone; he knew she wouldn’t lie to him about something that important. She never joked about her research. People sometimes wondered why she didn’t work in the auror department herself, but that just gave her more pride to stay where she was.
“Harry you…” but he was gone. Hermione slumped down in the chair and put her face in her hands trying not to let herself cry. She couldn’t imagine what would happen when he found out the truth. She didn’t know what she was going to tell Charmain, and it was going to hang over her head until she did, but Harry had to be of sound temper and not use his balls for brains before any one of them could make good of the situation.
She refused to even think about it any more that night. She decided to owl Ron and tell him that Harry was called in to work so Mrs. Weasley would be warned a head of time and not make a big deal out of him not being there for dinner. Plus, if Hermione tried to tell it to her face she would probably fail and end up in an emotional puddle in Ginny’s old room. She couldn’t understand what she should be feeling. She was upset that Harry was too blinded by some kind of Fate-induced hormones to think about Charmain, who would become the most important person in his life. Then, at the same time she was torn in knowing that he thought she would lie to him.
‘How could I lie to him about something like this? But then, wasn’t that what it was? We only kissed because Charmain’s powers made us, right? We wouldn’t have if she hadn’t made us, and that’s that.’ Hermione left it at that and stood from her chair.
The first thing she met before getting the owl off to Ron was Charmain. She immediately ran from her room when she heard the door to the study open.
“So where’s Harry?” Charmain asked immediately. She could sense something bad had happened.
“He had to go to work. It concerned the case we were discussing,” Hermione answered. She only knew that Harry was an auror. She never got around to telling her that she worked in Muggle Artifacts.
“Oh,” Charmain said and immediately Hermione was reminded of how Harry had said it minutes before.
“What would you like to do while he’s gone?” Hermione asked.
“Well, I’m hungry, but Harry said you wouldn’t be happy if I ate sweets. He made a lot of them, though. You look like you might want them. They look like de-stressing food.” Charmain said hopefully, and Hermione’s eyes softened.
“You know, I think I could use a pumpkin pastry. How about we eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and then we’ll both have a couple. We have a while before we visit the Weasleys,” Hermione answered. She was right, but if Charmain hadn’t been there Hermione wouldn’t have brought out the secret stash of chocolate ice cream she kept for pick-me-up occasions.
“Okay,” Charmain said cheerfully, and Hermione sighed and followed. She discovered that it was hard having a child. When you were mad at your ‘husband’ and had to be strong for them. It really challenged character, and Hermione wasn’t about to let hers falter. Not in front of Charmain, and she wasn’t going to risk being a good parent for a stupid kiss.
Meanwhile, Harry was busy in the ministry library looking up everything he could about Fates, and then every shielding charm, curse, and spell he could get. It was terrible doing research without Hermione. She knew what to look for, and Harry had no idea. He had been too focused on the absurdity of the whole story. Merlin was the only connection of Arthurian Legend and magic, right? What did a kid named Mordrid have to do with anything? So Harry decided he should start by researching that.
His conscious knew three minutes after he entered the library and greeted the librarian that was part of a twenty-four hour rotation. He knew that he had been a complete bastard. Harry knew if he even wanted so much as a chance to do more than kiss Hermione, he would have to do better than accuse her of lying.
About an hour later he sat with coffee in hand, something he absolutely despised, but the bitterness kept him scanning more books and that was all that mattered. Harry couldn’t go home without finding something to question Hermione’s theory. It was a matter of pride and not knowing if he could ask her to forgive him. He thought in some twisted way this could be their first fight as a couple, but then realized that since his temper raged they hadn’t even really gotten around to having a decent conversation about what they were in those regards. What he had thought before haunted him, and he left the library. A wizard with a woman on the mind couldn’t possibly do any accurate researching.
So, he decided to contact his best friend and go get pissed.
Harry mentally laughed because Ron still talked a little louder than average when using a telephone, but he was still at his own flat so Harry wasn’t worried about it. Now, if Mrs. Weasley was there to overhear he might’ve had to abort his mission.
“Harry mum will kill me if she found out I missed dinner with the family to go get sloshed!” Ron moaned.
“Ron, this is important! I want to tell you what Hermione thinks Charmain is because I need help to prove her wrong,” Harry said. Ron just didn’t understand how important this was.
“Wait a minute, you’re trying to prove Hermione Granger wrong, good luck mate. I guess it could be a fun try though. Where do you want to talk? Your place or mine?” Ron asked.
“Well, since I almost got kicked out of mine it’ll have to be yours.”
“You know my mum’s going to flip out when you and I both don’t show up?” Ron asked. His mother had called earlier requesting a few of Harry’s favorite foods and a few of his nieces and nephews called to make sure their favorite uncle would be there.
“Yeah, yeah, but I’m hoping we can get too drunk to care. After we talk it’s straight to that new bar in Diagon Alley,” Harry said.
“So I’m guessing you’re staying the night here too, and I can’t invite Luna over for a shagfest all around the house?” Ron asked. He didn’t live in a flat; it just wasn’t Ron’s style. He’d lived in a house with a family all his life, and though there wasn’t any family to speak of for the Cannon’s star keeper he liked the feel of a home. It was a two-story Victorian styled place about twenty minutes from London in the Wizarding part of the suburbs.
“Ron, I’m honestly hoping I’ll be too drunk to care if I lick a wild dragon’s dung-covered arse.”
“Wow, I’m gonna have to hear what she told you. You haven’t called and asked me to come get pissed with you since…you saw one of Hermione’s boyfriends leave your flat the next morning,” Ron said grinning. It had been, like this would turn out to be, all one big misunderstanding. The guy had slept on the couch and only because Hermione had hexed him for trying something so hard it knocked him out and she was nice enough to levitate him to there. Harry had just happened to see him scurrying out the door.
“Yeah, but this is different. I’ll be over after I put all these books away,” Harry then levitated each one to their proper place and with a pop arrived at Ron’s front door.
“Hey, you look like hell,” Ron said opening the door. He was still in sweats and an undershirt even though it was nearing five. He would’ve gone to shower and dress for dinner at his mother’s, but instead he had to owl her saying the Cannons had called a meeting and sent Luna in his place. Luna wasn’t too happy, but enjoyed spending time with the Weasleys. She didn’t have any siblings and her father was always busy running the Quibbler.
“Thanks, she had me drinking coffee Ron!” Harry complained and slouched into the leather couch that was very bachelor style and was just one piece of many in Ron’s home.
“Ugh, that bitch!” Ron said scrunching his face up sarcastically. He liked the stuff if it had enough cream in it. Harry was the only auror he had ever heard about hating it, most just didn’t have that option. Harry preferred muggle Pepsi, which gave all the people in Magical Law Enforcement a good laugh, but once they tried it, well to make long stories short a case was kept on hand in Harry’s office.
“Anyways I went to the library because she told me she found out something about Charmain. Have you ever heard of a Fate?” Harry asked and Ron’s face went pale. It must have been one of those things you hear about in the Wizarding world that everyone just assumes every wizard knows. One of the things Harry never seemed to know.
“Are you telling me that Charmain…that girl I just talked to yesterday…is a…is a…”
“Fate.”
“Harry! Don’t say it likes it’s being a werewolf! Merlin, being a Fate is ten times worse. How could a sweet, pretty little thing like her be a…Fate,” Ron asked wide-eyed.
“Well, how can pretty beings such as a Veela turn into a monster? According to Hermione she just…is.” Harry said irritably.
“That’s bullshit, Hermione always has a reason. Put your angriness aside long enough to tell me the story. Then you can fume all you want over a bottle of firewhiskey.” Ron said so he could get the story.
“Well, to make things short you remember Arthurian legend?”
“Harry in the Wizarding world it’s history not legend, and yes many a bedtime story was about Arthur and his nights when I was a lad,” Ron said. They were good memories when he and his brothers hadn’t been close to their teenage years and they used to pile in bed together while their mum held Ginny and told them all a bedtime story.
“Yeah, well that kid that Morgan Le Fay shagged her own brother to have, well that’s Charmain’s great-great-great-a lot of greats-grandfather. Hermione claims that all the magic used to deceive Arthur got thrown into Charmain’s blood because her father, Marquis Aiglentine, was going to have a bastard child before her, another daughter, but he killed the pregnant mother, and since he was the only one of Mordrid’s kin to produce two kids. Well, Charmain won the MBC lottery of hell. Anyways Charmain’s a Fate because of all the magic that got put into her blood. Her sister would’ve carried some of it and they would’ve just had a high MBC, but because she was killed Charmain’s is abnormally high, and abnormal means that they qualify for a Fate’s standards.” Harry said finishing in a huff.
“Yeah, you’ve been drinking something all right. You’re sure it was just coffee?” Ron asked wondering if Harry had gotten a hold of some alcohol or something before he called.
“See what I mean it’s crazy! It can’t be true, can it? She also tried to tell me we kissed last night because of Charmain’s manipulating powers. She also said she must have some kind of charm on her and that’s why none of her other powers show. Don’t you think it’s just a wee bit of a coincidence the thing that could be blamed for us kissing is the power Hermione claims that Charmain can show? She’s only been in our house for a little under two damn days! You blame dogs for stuff, not little girls!” Harry fumed. Ron didn’t know what he was supposed to say.
“Harry she’s probably just confused. If Charmain really is a Fate and she was manipulating you, well I know she’s only about ten, but you guys probably would’ve gone farther than kissing. Hermione’s just being a prude and trying to deny the fact that you two were meant for one another. She’ll come around and you’ll live happily ever after,” Ron said.
Harry liked how Ron could be so confident and it was a comforting feeling to think that, but Harry knew better. He also knew that Hermione wasn’t one to make things up like this, so that had to mean she really did think something was up with Charmain and her past.
“Yeah, but Hermione was never good at making things up like that. Could there really be something wrong with Charmain. Ron, I just don’t know what to do. Who to believe.”
“Why don’t you just ask Charmain?” Ron said stating the obvious.
“Oh, yeah, and she’s read all the books at the orphanage. I’m sure she’s heard the one about the evil Fate. You obviously make them out to be just that. I can’t scare her, or make her think that I think she is one. I never in a million years would’ve thought that, and not just because I had no idea in hell as to what they were,” Harry answered. He put his head in his hands. He was getting a headache.
“Look, you’re going to have to talk to someone other than Hermione and get their outsiders opinion. I’m too much of a middleman. Why don’t you go to Dumbledore?” Ron asked.
Harry pondered it for a moment and it sounded like an obvious solution. When in doubt ask Dumbledore. “I mean there’s also Moony.” Ron added when Harry hadn’t said anything.
“Both are good ideas Ron, I’ll get around to it, but something more important calls to me at the moment,” Harry said standing. The firewhiskey sounded like the perfect cure for his growing headache.
“I’ll go get dressed,” Ron, said running to get ready for a night of fun with his friend. They hadn’t done something like this in a while and he was positively giddy.
Hermione was pacing around her living room. She had been ready to go to the Weasley’s about an hour early. She couldn’t wait to get out of the flat. Every time she sat down on the couch she had to stand up, it brought back too many memories of the kiss. IT WAS JUST A KISS! Hermione told herself, well if she was counting it would be around a good thousand.
“Charmain are you ready?” Hermione called. She came downstairs a few minutes later wearing a fairy green robe they had bought her the day before. Hermione was wearing her muggle clothing, but Charmain hadn’t gone shopping in London yet, and Hermione thought the Weasley grandchildren would accept her if she looked a bit more like them. They all wore robes.
“How do I look?” Charmain asked twirling around.
“Beautiful, and me?” Hermione said doing the same. She was wearing a pair of khakis and white tank top with a button up shirt over it. She was casual, but wore a leather belt and shoes to make it a bit dressier.
“Well, I think Harry would say you looked very pretty, so that’s my vote,” Charmain said skipping to the door.
Hermione sighed the kid was perseverant. She didn’t want to think about Harry, but she had to know. Did Harry say that she was pretty when he was at home with Charmain?
“How do you know he would say that?”
“Call it instinct, and the fact that he likes to look at you a lot. Usually people like to look at pretty things,” Charmain said. Hermione was just glad she didn’t say it was faith. “Oh, and it’s faith,” Charmain added as Hermione put the key in the lock. They had to go to the corner to use the portkey she had made.
Hermione had made a face at her last words, but didn’t show Charmain.
“How many grandchildren does Mrs. Weasley have?” Charmain asked while they walked from the portkey point at Otter St. Catchpole to the Burrow.
“Ten, and two on the way,” Hermione answered. Fred and George’s wives Angelina and Katie were both pregnant with their third child.
“Are you sure she won’t mind me?” Charmain asked.
“Oh, no, she’s still after Ron and Harry to get married and settle down, he has a sister that’s going to have a few kids of her own sometime. Mrs. Weasley absolutely adores children, and she’ll positively love you,” Hermione said reassuringly. What she said about Ron and Harry reminded her though, that she was supposedly marrying Harry. They had five years to decide if they were actually going to but it didn’t change the fact that except for a few vows and rings, they were married.
“But you and Harry are getting married,” Charmain said.
“Charmain, what we have is very complicated,” Hermione tried to reason.
“No it isn’t, you only think it’s complicated because you want it to be. If you would just get married and accept it, then it would make my task a lot easier,” Charmain huffed.
“Charmain!” Hermione said like she was still a Hogwarts student. “How…you don’t know…oh I ne…just don’t say anything to Mrs. Weasley!” Hermione finished.
“Yes mum,” Charmain smiled and Hermione was speechless again. She had just called her mum.
“You know Charmain I know it’s hard to adjust you don’t have to…”
“But I want to. You really did sound like a mum a minute ago, all flabbergasted. I’ll call Harry dad when he has his moment,” Charmain giggled.
Hermione took her hand as she rang the makeshift doorbell Mr. Weasley had insisted on getting and having Hermione explain to him. He loved when people rang it. The teakettle turned on and it kind of sounded like the whistle of the Hogwart’s Express, but he loved the invention.
“Hermione dear, come on in, Charmain it’s nice to see you. Have you been doing well?” Mr. Weasley asked when he answered the door. Charmain noted that he looked much more like a grandfather than a minister in old robes and a less professional manner.
“Fabulous,” Charmain smiled.
“And you Mr. and Mrs…where’s Harry?” Mr. Weasley asked. He was ready to tease them about having a marriage license, but it wouldn’t be any fun if Harry weren’t there.
“He had ministry business to attend to,” Hermione stated flatly. Arthur knew something was wrong, but kept his mouth shut. He would’ve known if Harry had ministry business. He assumed Hermione only used that as the cover story for his wife and was informing him so he could play along, which he would and find out later what really happened. He didn’t have time to ask at the moment because his grandchildren were running over to meet the charming girl next to their Auntie Hermione.
The eldest Weasley grandchild was Bill and his Greek wife Valen’s son, Orion, who would be thirteen and was home for the Christmas holidays two days early by special request. Charlie and his wife Alexandria boasted twin girls that (Hermione thanked Merlin) were Charmain’s age and would be first years with her next year at Hogwarts. They were Emily and Evelyn and both had a full head of red ringlets and bright blue eyes.
Percy and his wife Penelope had three kids. Carolyn was seven, Cynthia would be four, and they had a three-month-old son named Chadwik, but everyone called him Chad because they unanimously agreed Chadwik was too cruel.
Fred and George’s kids were all the same age. Their birth dates weren’t more than a month apart, and they were next-door neighbors. There were rumors about odd things happening between the couples, but no one spoke of them. Fred and Angelina had two sons, David and Brendon, at ages four and two. George and Katie also had two sons, Caden and Kieran, at those same ages. Both women were expecting their third babies around February. Everyone prayed they would be girls.
The Weasley grandchildren really didn’t know what to make of Charmain at first. Orion’s eyes went wide the first time he saw her, and didn’t or couldn’t say much of anything. Hermione wasn’t sure which. Hermione noted to tell Ron he was right, no matter how hard it would be. He might just have to tell his oldest nephew to watch it. Emily and Evelyn were very talkative and immediately welcomed Charmain. Carolyn said hi, but wasn’t so sure of herself or Charmain, but more herself hopefully. All the others were too young to pay Charmain too much attention. All they knew was that they had a new playmate, and in Caden and David’s case, a new target for practical jokes.
“Alright dears run along and show Charmain around,” Mrs. Weasley said shooing them out the back door.
Then it was the grown-ups turn to talk to Hermione.
“So, how did the adoption come about?” Bill asked as he and Valen sat together on the couch. All the couples were snuggled or at least had an arm around the other. Hermione kicked herself for letting Harry leave. She needed support right now, or at least his arm around her.
“I read an article about it in the Quibbler actually.” Hermione answered.
“You read my article, oh Hermione I’m so glad it touched someone!” Luna squealed. Hermione hadn’t noticed her before and then she felt a bit better when she saw Ron wasn’t with her. At least she wasn’t the only woman without a partner. Hermione figured Harry and Ron were probably together somewhere.
Innocent Eyes
Chapter Seven
(Author’s Note VERY IMPORTANT! This doesn’t pertain to tall of you but those who have read chapter four before I just recently (meaning one hour ago) corrected chapter four should now know that Harry and Hermione haven’t slept together I uploaded the wrong version of the chapter. I had previously written that they had slept together, but wanted to upload the revised version that I thought would better fit the plot so just to clear that up…HARRY AND HERMIONE HAVE NOT SLEPT TOGETHER THEY ONLY KISSED SORRY FOR THE SCREW-UP! Now…on with chapter seven.)
Harry sat setting his blurry vision upon yet another pint. Ron had abandoned him for some blonde about a half hour ago and since he hadn’t caught site of them yet figured that conquest must have been worth Ron’s while. But now he was alone and drunk. It really wasn’t fun to be alone and drunk. He wanted to go home and sleep but he knew even now with half his wit about him that Hermione would kill him. Charmain certainly didn’t need to think that her father went out drinking every night he was supposed to be at a family gathering. But hell if she was the supposed Fate she already knew right?
“Hey, Potter, what in the hell are you doing here?” Draco Malfoy hadn’t changed much except for the fact he had reformed the amount of evil in him. The smart-ass quota was promptly accounted for though. His hair was layered and almost to his shoulders. Ginny loved to run her fingers through it and it was very well kept. He was built well he had been an auror with Harry for a time until he had obtained a near-fatal injury and Ginny threatened him within an inch of his life if he ever worked in that department again. So, in compromise he just worked in the offices in the department and wasn’t allowed to run out to crimes with active aurors. His body was kept in great shape though, he saw to that for other purposes.
“I don’t really know,” Harry kind of slurred. He wasn’t at his most drunken point yet, but he was not capable of apparition at this stage.
“Well, I do, you’re getting sloshed and doing a damn good job.” Draco smirked.
“Thank you,” Harry said and then put his head in his hands.
“Would you like to tell your old partner what the hell all of the oh, four pints and two shots of firewhiskey have been for?” Draco inquired.
“Hermione.”
“I always knew she’d send you to the bar someday. Please tell it was for something good. Did you get her pregnant, or worse sleep with someone else and make her jealous?”
“What, Hermione and I have never slept together!” Harry said as indignantly as he could manage.
“Oh, well then maybe it’s bloody time you did.”
“No, we kissed and then she blamed that, the girl…”
“Charmain,” Draco said helping out. He pulled out his wand and cast a bit of a sobering spell on his friend because this was going to require Harry to think straight.
“Oh, sweet Merlin thanks for that,” Harry said rubbing his now cleared head.
“Any time I want to hear this shit,” Draco said and waited for Harry to bask in the wonder of soberness for a moment.
“How do you know about Charmain? You aren’t at Molly’s?”
“Harry, that party was over three hours ago. Ginny and Hermione, though she denied it, sent me out to find your white arse,” Draco said and sipped at a vodka and cranberry juice.
“Oh, no.”
“Yeah, you’re gonna be in the doghouse a while mate. Ron’s going to be with you though, and worse yet Molly sent Luna out to find him.”
“OH NO! He slinked away with some blonde earlier…Luna’s…”
“Harry the blonde was Luna you dumb arse.” Draco laughed.
“Oh, well I thought.”
“No, actually you didn’t mate, because you were fucking pissed.” Draco said with another smirk.
“Whatever, how’s the baby making?”
“Well it’s a hell of a lot better than a kiss that causes you to go get shit-faced,” Draco said not letting it go.
“Oh, shut up already, it’s bloody embarrassing. Hermione’s a virgin, like she would just up and decide to have sex with me because we started making out on a couch like the common teenagers.”
“Hmm, well most teenagers start out making out on the couch before the girl gives it up to them in the bedroom. You were on the right path I suppose.”
“There are more important things at the moment I’d like to discuss than how I get women into bed,” Harry seethed.
“Yes, I suppose, but since we are in the raunchy atmosphere to discuss such raunchy adventures I figured what the hell,” Draco replied.
“Have you ever heard of Fates?” Harry asked and watched Draco’s gray eyes turn suddenly to look into his, with a face full of astonishment.
“Holy hell what have you done in the past two days!”
“Well, first off Hermione and I adopted Charmain Aiglentine, now Charmain Aiglentine Granger, whom you’ve met at Molly’s well, Hermione went in to throw herself into the research departments of the ministry on the morning after we kissed and came back to the flat to pull me into my study and reveal that she believes Charmain is in fact a Fate.”
“Harry there is no fucking way Charmain can be a Fate,” Draco said his insides churning with remembrance.
“You wanna share?”
“Well, Fates they, well there hasn’t been one since…look this just isn’t the place to tell you,” Draco said and apparated them to the London Bridge.
“And this is?” Harry asked peering over the edge of the small railing they now stood upon to the dark depths of icy cold water.
“Yes, because it’s one of those things reporters like Rita Skeeter would turn into a bloody bug for.”
“So as you were saying…”
“The last Fate was…well I don’t like to share because it has to do with family demons but the last Fate was going to be born to a cousin of mine, therefore it was saw to that she was…killed. I don’t like to think of there being a possibility of another because of what unfairly happened to her. She was sentenced to death by the French ministry because her lover, the bastard kid’s father ratted her out.”
“Who was he?” Harry asked getting a sick feeling.
“Marquis Aiglentine,” Draco sighed. He could sense that he would be off inactive duty in the Auror department very shortly. “See he was an exceptionally well-trained bastard because he ruined their whole family. We Malfoys keep family close so even though they were a distant relation in France I saw them about three times a year. We kept family close because we had all been tied into the Dark Lord and couldn’t have someone betraying us traipsing about with the family name. He was betrothed to the girl’s stepsister. See I liked Charise, the stepsister, but not Ciara, who was quite plainly the bitch. Ciara was the one betrothed to Marquis and Charise is the one he sold to the ministry. Charise was only half Malfoy, and I think that’s why he fucked her over because no one in the family really cared except me who tended to like those unassociated with Malfoy blood lineage. Guess I have to hate myself in some twisted way.”
“Malfoy are you serious, you haven’t talked to Hermione about any of this have you?” Harry asked looking very overwhelmed.
“No, I don’t love you Potter, but I bloody well wouldn’t screw over a colleague that has helped in saving my arse on more than one occasion. Surprised to hear the many faucets to my family tree? I’m sorry that Charmain may have something…”
“Draco did you know that Ciara and Marquis did marry?”
“Yeah, my family was desperate for his money. Did you know there’s at least a million galleon fee for a betrothal that is to be paid to the father of the girl? He was a bastard, but he killed my Grandpa’s cousin’s ‘mistake’ so I guess he was just being that much more noble in their eyes. But yes, I recall the blasted marriage. It was sometime in May of my third year at Hogwarts.”
“Did you know what happened after that? Was Aiglentine a Death Eater?”
“Oh, hell yeah it was his life. Ciara joined at the Dark Lord’s request. She bragged all the time about having a special mission. It was quite frankly, fucking annoying.”
“You knew they had a daughter right?”
“No, they had to cut ties after they were married and went of to hibernate in Siberia for a while.”
“We have to open a new file on Monday, don’t let me forget that, and bring a pensieve to record all the memories you’ve just told me?”
“What in the bloody hell for?”
“Marquis and Ciara Aiglentine did have a daughter and I have no doubt in my mind that’s what Ciara’s special project for the Dark Lord was. He would use a Fate for…anything, and he would be the only man crazy enough to know that Marquis was a descendant of Mordrid and the ancient sorceress Mab. They died and someone brought their baby to England and hid her from Voldemort. They saved her life too, but so far that’s the only piece of the puzzle missing is why in the hell Voldemort didn’t use her?”
“What are you talking about?” Draco asked quite peeved he hated his family but he wanted to know what Potter was thinking.
“Charmain was Ciara and Marquis’ daughter. According to Hermione she could be a Fate and we’re going mad because we don’t know is she caused the damn kiss. It’s all starting to come together now though.”
“So Charmain is…”
“Your second cousin once removed on your father’s side, and don’t ask me to repeat it,” Harry sighed.
“Look, Potter just tell Hermione to meet me somewhere tomorrow and we’ll let her deal with this. If Charmain isn’t killing anyone it’s safe to keep this hush for at least a little while. Letting Hermione Granger think she’s right until she proves herself wrong has always worked well in the past. Why break the bloody cycle?” Draco said thinking quietly and cursing his family. He was happy that Hermione and Harry were happy with Charmain but pissed that she couldn’t be a normal kid.
“You’re right I need to go home and just sit and think for a while. Think really hard. I’ll have Hermione owl you in the morning, but could you do me a favor and make her stay at the house tomorrow. We need to have some family time. You know, not worry about what’s wrong with someone we love. We have to see all the good qualities in Charmain. Even if she is a Fate we won’t be able to dwell on that forever.”
“Yeah, and you’re forgetting the girl’s at least one quarter veela. You can keep yourself awake for hours thinking about that one. That’s why my grandfather’s cousin remarried. His first wife was okay but one day he saw some half-breed veela strutting her stuff and boom, the bitch we know as Ciara was born.”
“Bye Draco, tell me when you and Ginny achieve the goal,” Harry said.
“That’s what I had really come to talk to you about, since you didn’t show up at Molly’s. Ginny’s pregnant, due sometime in August.”
“Congratulations.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I won’t stop fucking her like crazy, which I’m way overdue for at the moment. See you later Potter!” Draco called and apparated to his mansion.
Harry sat staring at the river before apparating to the front of his apartment building and ringing his own flat. He knew it wouldn’t be wise to wake Hermione, but he really didn’t have a choice because he left his portkey with Ron and the anti-entry apparition wards came on at nine.
“Harry I’m really not in the mood for your drunkenness,” Hermione said coldly through the speaker.
“How’d you know that’s where I was?”
“Luna called about two hours ago to say she had gone to get Ron and that I should perhaps come for you but I told her I didn’t really care enough to go to a smoky disgusting bar to get someone I can’t stand,” Hermione said and could feel Harry flinch even though she couldn’t see it.
“Look, I deserve that but there are some things we need to talk about that don’t concern Charmain or Fates, and I need to talk to you about it tonight.” Harry said honestly with a sigh.
“Fine, I guess I’ll let you up,” Hermione huffed.
When she went to get the door she looked through the hole to just see what kind of state he was in and by the looks of it he had certainly had a rough night, emotionally speaking. Yet he still managed to look rugged and sexy. It drove her crazy at times.
She pulled out her wand undid the locking charms and then turned the muggle lock.
“Hi,” she greeted with no feeling whatsoever.
“I suppose I deserve that, but I found out a few things today that regardless of what they mean have come to tell me that I can’t put childish things before my family. I have to have a distinguished trust in all parts of that family, and not to say that we ever will… but if I’m not getting any from the wife it shouldn’t affect how I present myself to the daughter.”
“Harry I think in some odd corner of my mind that almost made sense,” Hermione smiled. Harry didn’t waste anytime and brought Hermione into his arms. She might not be more than a friend right now, but a friendly Hermione was all he really needed.
“Charmain’s in bed I hope?” Harry asked after he put her down from their warm embrace. She was still dizzy, but nodded.
“She had quite the time with the Weasley children. You missed the quidditch game and Fred and George weren’t at all too happy to lose their teammate. It was quite boring without someone diving and skimming the grass at breathtaking speeds,” Hermione smirked walking over to the couch with a cup of hot chocolate.
“I can be breathtaking in other ways,” Harry said.
“Are you still drunk?” Hermione asked raising an eyebrow, but Harry usually wasn’t flirty when he was drunk, thank Merlin, he was more of a clumsy laughing idiot.
“No, Draco came and got me from the bar and was telling me more about his family tree but before you even ask I refuse to talk about that tonight. Tonight is just about us. I need one night to set things straight with you then tomorrow it’s the new trio, my wife, Charmain, and myself having a day of fun.”
“Harry I’m hardly your wife. I am Charmain’s mother, but your wife is going a bit far just because I signed a document that would legalize it,” Hermione smiled a small hopeless smile. She wanted to be his wife but at the same time was just so confused and a bit angry towards him.
“Don’t be this way. You know as well as I do that it doesn’t matter what Charmain is or isn’t we’re what we are and the paths we choose are ours to choose. I chose you Hermione and I don’t care how long it takes you to comprehend that. You can read a million psychology books. Hell, take courses at Oxford University on male nature, but I know what I want and I know that I would’ve chose you without the little Fate in our lives. She just sped up the process. Now, you’ve got five years before I’ll grovel, but I’m asking you now, without the damn ring. I want you to be my wife one day Hermione.”
“Harry we only kissed once…”
“Is that the problem? Well, then guess we’ll just have to change that,” Harry said and pulled Hermione to him. He kissed her lips sweetly and softly just to get his point across. “Now, that makes two.”
“Harry, Hermione began laughing, it just isn’t that simple.”
“And who says it isn’t?”
“Well, I can’t just say I want to marry you. We have to date or something…we have to do something to finalize it and make it seem like it wasn’t just a whim. I mean it when I say, I love you…”
“Do you really love me?” Harry asked incredibly.
“More than anything, well perhaps Charmain.”
“Good because I was feeling like showing you just how much I love you, but I wasn’t going to without a mutual feeling,” Harry said and brought her back to him for another kiss this time it was much longer than the first and she tasted him finding that there was no trace of firewhiskey on his breath. He was just drunk on her. “Three…”
“Oh, my…where did you learn how to do that,” Hermione said in reference to the way he sent a shiver and a shot of heat straight up her spine with every time their lips met.
“It’s called passion Hermione,” Harry answered. Then Hermione took initiative and swung a leg to the other side of his hips and gingerly straddled his lap.
It surprised Harry to no end the way her curiosity and bravery always seemed to jump in at all the right times.
“Is that a yes to being my wife?” Harry laughed and Hermione shifted her weight around making him groan.
“We’ll see,” Hermione, said and Harry wasted no time in dragging her lips back to his just to engulf himself with her scent and taste. Her hair was everywhere and he dug his large hands into it feeling the soft strands sift between his fingers.
Hermione mewed at his soft touch. He was so gentle it killed her.
“Jeesh, Harry I’m not made of glass,” Hermione said when there was a break in kissing. She had been counting too, and they were now up to twenty-two.
Harry roughly grabbed her arse and carried her into her bedroom and threw her down on the bed making Hermione laugh. He pounced on top of her and continued where they left off only now he began peeling the clothes away from her body.
Charmain had woken up when Harry came home and stood at the top of the stairs listening until they went into Hermione’s bedroom. Then she crept to the door when she noticed Harry had left his wand on the counter and Hermione’s was in the holder by the coat rack. She thought it would be quite funny if they got stuck in Hermione’s room together until she got them out. Uncle Ron had said he would pick her up at nine to go to a Cannons’ practice so she thought perhaps when she got back from that. So she touched her hand to the doorknob and then quickly ran back to her bedroom.
After tasting every inch of each other and pushing their quota of kisses to over a hundred, Harry and Hermione were ready for the final step.
“Harry this is my first…”
“I know, but I didn’t want to make you nervous,” Harry said kissing her.
“I’m not, but I just thought you should know.” Hermione said blushing a thousand shades of crimson.
“Just let me find my wand…” Harry said searching the room for wherever his wand might’ve been thrown so he could cast a contraceptive charm. “Um, Hermione…”
“What?” Hermione asked hoping he hadn’t changed his mind.
“I can’t find my wand to cast the charm,” Harry said sheepishly. He felt like he was seventeen again.
“That’s okay, wait…mine’s in the holder by the door.”
“Well, I’ll go get it just a moment,” Harry said trying to think back to wear he might’ve put his. He guessed he must’ve left it in the apartment, but he hadn’t ever done that…ever he had always slept with his wand, just in case.
He put his pants on, which was very awkward and tried to turn the doorknob.
“Hermione your door locks from the inside right?” Harry asked referring to the muggle mechanism that locked her door.
“Yes, and I always put a locking charm on it at night, but I stopped doing that when Charmain moved in.”
“I can’t open the door. It’s charmed,” Harry said looking into Hermione’s eyes. “It’s impossible to open without a wand.”
“Harry you can’t be serious.”
“Hermione I wouldn’t joke about this,” Harry said flatly.
“Harry I don’t keep muggle condoms or anything…I don’t know what we should do,” Hermione said still in the bed and looking as disheveled as Harry could’ve possibly made her, because he was always liked her like that.
“We don’t have to do anything, but I mean it would be weird to just…” Harry said getting back into bed.
“Keep going,” Hermione finished.
“No, I meant it would be weird to…”
“Don’t say that word.”
“What weird?”
“No, don’t say stop. I don’t want you to stop,” Hermione said looking up into his eyes with a pleading cinnamon gaze.
“You know that if we do you could get…”
“I know.”
“You know that if you do I’d still love you, and maybe then you’d marry me sooner.”
“What about Charmain?”
“I think Charmain planned it,” Harry laughed. He turned out the lights again with a bit of wandless magic.
“Did you try…”
“Charmain casts really good locking charms. I can only cast alohamora without my wand and it didn’t work,” Harry said brushing his lips across Hermione’s pulse point on her neck until he reached her lips again.
“Just make me yours Harry,” Hermione whispered.
It was one of the oddest nights, but one of the most magical. When they were one there was nothing else in the world that mattered more to them than the other half and lying there after Harry had fallen asleep on her chest Hermione knew that there was one thing that was certain. If she wasn’t completely and helplessly in love with Harry she would’ve told him to stop, but now she couldn’t imagine what it would be like if he had. With that thought, she fell into slumber wondering what fate would bring them the following morning.
