One Witch. Two Wizards. Their future rides on one thing: Hermione's Choice

1. The Boy Who Loved

Chapter One: The Boy Who Loved

The early summer winds swept melodically across the Hogwarts grounds as several owls glided through the night sky. Most of the students had turned in for the evening, anxiously awaiting the graduation ceremony that would take place in the morning. The seven years had returned to their common rooms right after dinner making last minute preparations for the event and spending one last evening with their classmates. It was a bittersweet moment. They were all moving on to bigger and better things and at the same time, they were leaving the first place many of them had ever truly called home. One student in particular was having a very hard time saying goodbye, and that was the infamous Harry Potter.

He stood along the otherwise abandoned Quidditch field grasping his Firebolt and a far off look in his eyes. 'It really *is* coming to an end' he thought to himself. After tomorrow, Hogwart's would be a thing of his past. There would be no more roaming the halls in his invisibility cloak. No more talks with Dumbledore, spats with Snape, or run ins with McGonnagel. He was graduating an accomplished Gryffindor, and Head Boy of his class. He was going to leave behind the closest thing to family he'd even known. He wasn't going to be able to sneak to Hagrid's hut for a snack. He wouldn't be able to concoct endless ways to die a horrible death to please Professor Trelawney with Ron. And he wouldn't be able to find the answers to the most perplexing wizarding questions without the help of Hermione.

"Hermione." He muttered softly to himself. He'd been thinking of her often. As his time at Hogwart's began to run out, he'd realized just how precious she was to him. Sure he'd always known that she was an incredible friend. Loyal, clever, brave, but it had taken him six years to realize just how truly special she was and always had been.

Mounting his broom and taking off through the cool night air, his thoughts continued dwelling on the captivating Miss Granger.

She and Ron had been his closest, most trusted confidants since their first days at Hogwarts, but until now he'd taken her for granted. When Hermione wanted to crack the books and prepare for finals, he'd often follow Ron's lead to the Quidditch field for a little practice. She always pushed them to do their best and cared deeply for their successful completion of O.W.L.S., the apparition test, etc. If it wasn't for Hermione, he never would have been Head Boy. It wasn't that he was stupid, but he wasn't focused. She is the one who pushed until she got the results she wanted out of him. She was the reason he'd done so well throughout the last seven years. It was all of her encouragement that helped mold him into the impressive wizard she always knew he was meant to be, and he didn't know if he'd ever be able to show her how truly grateful he was.

Why hadn't he noticed years ago? Hermione was *everything*. Intelligent, beautiful, loyal, caring, compassionate. She was by his side through every struggle and obstacle that occured throughout their schooling at Hogwarts. She didn't leave when things got dangerous and risky. On the contrary, she stepped up to every challenge with him and Ron and faced it head on. Her cool and collected demeanor mixed with her well above average I.Q. had helped to bail them all out of many predicaments, and her voice of reason helped talk sense into them both when they weren't thinking rationally hundreds of times. There were moments when she was a bit much to handle. Her stubborness and incessant need to be right were annoying at times, but looking at it in retrospect, it was these little quirks that Harry loved about her. They are just a small part of the selfless, kind, and charming young witch that was his Hermione. She was everything he could ever ask for, and she was also dating his best friend.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Deeply saddened by the realization that his chance with Hermione had passed, he took one last lap around the Quidditch field and decided it would be best to turn in. Gently gliding to the ground, he took one last glance at the place he'd spent the last seven years playing as Gryffindor House's seeker and started his way back to the castle when a familiar voice spoke through the darkness.

"It's in your blood."

A smile slowly crept across his face as he turned to find the alluring Miss Granger standing to his left, her wand in one hand and a piece of parchment in the other.

"You know, someone else told me those exact words about seven years ago. She assured me I wouldn't fail at Quidditch. I wasn't so certain."

She grinned as she walked closer to where he was standing.

"Lumos!" She whispered as a small beam of light appeared from the tip of her wand. "Well, judging from Four Quidditch Cups, twelve consecutive wins, 2,250 total points, and three years as Captain, I'd say she was right on the money, she was."

"You sound like Harry Potter's number one fan." He laughed, very impressed that she was so attentive of his accomplishments.

"Now see here, Potter. I have to be President of the fan club. By the way, where is that autographed photo I owled you for in our second year, hmm?"

"I think you have me confused with Professor Lockhart, Granger." He winked, knowing how much she hated being teased about her obvious infatuation with one of their many Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors.

"Mr. Potter, I don't know what you are talking about." she said feigning surprise at his statement, "I am not the type to have schoolgirl crushes. I spent my years hitting the books while *some* of us were busy gawking at Ravenclaw seekers and Beauxbatons Champions."

"Excuse me, Miss Granger, but for someone who was busy 'hitting the books', you sure took time out to chase Mr. Weasley, did you not?" He replied as a twinge of jealousy and regret suddenly shot through his body.

"Oh.." She began, a bit taken a back that the tone in his voice had changed and he didn't seem as playful as he had moments ago. "Ron chased *me*, thank you very much. Bloody hell, it took the boy four years to even realize I was a member of the opposite sex, do you think I would have wasted my precious studying time trying to snag him? I'm just glad the boy finally got some sense in him. I always knew I would wind up with one of yo-"

"One of you?" Harry repeated, watching as her cheeks turned red and she turned from his gaze. "You mean, you thought we could've been together under different circumstances?

"Maybe. Why, is the idea *that* appalling, Harry?" She asked in a low, shaky voice as she turned her back towards him, "I mean, there's always been a connection between us, perhaps under different *circumstances*, it could have been more than a friendly one."

"Not apalling at all, Granger." He said softly, reaching his arm out to touch her shoulder. "I just wish I'd thought of it sooner."

"What are you saying, Harry?" She asked curiously as she turned to look at him once more, both shocked and intrigued by his reply. "You mean, you've thought about us, you know, in *that* way."

"Yes." He nodded as he let out a sigh. "Ya know Hermione, it's times like this I wish we still had the time turner."

"Oh Harry.." She whispered, tears forming in her eyes. "Would you really go back to change things if you could?"

"No," He shook his head as he himself began to fight back oncoming tears. "If anyone deserves you, Hermione, it's Ron. But if I am only going to get this one moment of honesty with you, I want to be able to replay it over and over. If this is all I am going to have, I don't ever want it to end. If I was only allowed one memory, it would be this one here with you, simply knowing if things had gone differently, at least I had a chance. Even if I let it pass me by, I'm still honored knowing that I could have had someone like you in my life. Of all the things that have happened here over the last seven years, this is the one night I want to suspend in time. What could have been for the Boy who Lived...and the Girl he loved."

"Oh geez, Harry..." She answered, biting down on her quivering lip as the tears she'd been trying so hard to hold in began to fall rapidly down her face. "You were *never* the Boy who lived to me. You were never some famous name I became friends with for glory. I saw something special in you because you are a phenomenal person, Harry Potter. To the world you're the one who conquered the Dark Lord, but to me you are my friend, my hero."

"I know Hermione." He wept, unable to control his emotions any longer. "That's what I love most about you. I wasn't some name. You liked me for being me. No more. No less."

"No, you're wrong!" She yelped. "Being who you are isn't the reason I liked you, Harry. It's....it's the reason I love you."

"Hermione..." He sobbed, reaching his hand to caress her aching face. "Where's that time turner when we need it?"

"We don't.." She insisted as she continued to cry. "Harry, if this is our *moment*, I won't need help remembering it. This is going to be the one thing I remember most. Our last night, our last stolen moment, our last kiss..."

"Hermione, we can't do that." He said nervously. As much as he wanted it to happen, there was still someone standing in their way. Someone he had called his best friend for the last seven years. Someone they both loved with all of their hearts.

"Why not?" She asked, leaning closer to him.

"For one thing, we've never had a first kiss. Secondly, I can't do that to Ron."

"But there is no Ron right now, Harry!" She exclaimed, as all of her usual rational behavior and composure seemed to melt away. "This is our moment, our suspension of time. There is only you and me. If this is all we have to hold on to, then I want to end it properly."

"Hermione.." His voice cracked as she leaned in closer and sweat began to form in his palms and his heart started to race.

"Please, Harry." She pleaded, moving her face mere inches from his, "This is our moment, you and me. I need to know what could have been. I need this memory, and for just a few seconds, I need you..."

Unable to resist the temptation any longer, he grabbed her waist tightly and pulled her towards him. A slight gasp of shock escaped her lips before they met with his in a dance that was seven years in the making. All that was still left to be said was executed eloquently in one simple, yet poignant moment between two star-crossed lovers who'd taken the wrong path. It was their moment, their one small piece of history. It was beautiful, it was perfect, and unfortunately, it was witnessed by the one person it would hurt the most.

2. One Witch. Two Wizards.

Chapter 2- One Witch. Two Wizards.

"I guess you two are celebrating the good news."

Ron's infuriated voice seethed, causing a shocked Harry and Hermione to pull break away from their kiss and face him, both at a loss of words to explain their compromising position.

"Ron, It's not what you think, really..." Hermione muttered, desperately searching for a better explanation, but her usual eloquence escaped her during this most delicate situation.

But there were no words that could possibly explain what Ron had just witnessed. For neither Harry nor Hermione completely understood it themselves. Both were caught up in the moment, their moment. Part of them had felt the guilt that ultimately comes along with betraying a friend, but another part of them could find no fault with the pure release of emotion that had occurred just a few short minutes ago. The last thing they had intended to do was hurt Ron, but unfortunately, fate had a different plan.

"Not what I think?" He asked as the anger in his voice elevated, "Not what I think? How bloody naive do you think I am, Hermione? I know I am not as clever as you, or Harry for that matter, but I think it's quite obvious what was happening a minute ago."

Turning towards Harry, he gave him a look of pure hatred.

"And you! Becoming Auror wasn't enough, was it?" He asked contemptuously, "You could have had any witch in the whole damn school and you had to pick the one I'd fallen for! Thanks a lot, old pal! Who am I to compete with the boyish charm of the infamous wizarding wonder that is Harry Potter?"

"Auror? What do you mean, Auror?" Harry questioned, paying no mind to Ron's harsh comments.

"What? You mean Hermione didn't tell you?" Sounding almost as surprised as Harry, "I guess your need to be together made it slip her mind while the foolish prat that I am waited anxiously in the common room to see how you'd react to the news. I was so happy for my mate, Harry. How could I have been so stupid? Seven years I've spent with both of you and never *once* did it cross my mind that either of you was capable of stabbing me in the back. Guess I can't read people as well as I thought."

"I'm sorry, I forgot to give this to you." Hermione replied in a shaky voice as she extended her trembling arm to Harry and handed him the letter she'd been holding.

"Thank you." He nodded as he accepted the paper and turned back to Ron. "I know this looks bad, but really, I can explain if you'll just let me."

"No, that isn't necessary, Harry." He sneered, "Just bloody pretend I am not here. You both seem much better off without me anyway. Heck, you'd probably still be playing tonsil quidditch if I hadn't *rudely* interrupted. Boy, am I glad to be getting out of here tomorrow. Now that I've learned such a valuable lesson, I won't trust as easily after Hogwarts!"

And with that he stormed off towards the castle as Hermione started after him.

"Harry. I have to find him." She whispered in between sobs as she turned back to face him one last time.

"Go, Hermione." Harry nodded. "I never meant to do this to you two. Blame me. I just wanted one moment and I paid a terrible price for it. I am so sorry for this."

"No! Don't you dare say that! We're both at fault." She insisted, "I wanted that kiss as much as you did and now I will have to pay the consequences. I was selfish in wanting you both, and now I have to fix things and I will. I promise you I will."

And then she disappeared into the night, leaving Harry to absorb all that had just happened. To absorb all of the life altering events that had just taken place and to contemplate how things would go from here, the good, the bad, and the future.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Dear Mr. Potter,

It is with extreme honor that I inform you that the Ministry of Magic has selected you for its most prestigious Auror training program. Every year we select a Hogwarts graduate who exemplifies bravery, courage, loyalty, and complete devotion to defending good against evil in our ongoing battle against dark magic. After discussing this thoroughly with Professor Dumbledore and reviewing your impressive record of success against battling the Dark Lord and his followers, I am most certain there is no one more qualified for this position. If you decide to accept this offer, please owl back as soon as possible and further instructions will be given.

Congratulations on your graduation, Harry. Whatever path you do decide to take, it is sure to lead you to extraordinary things. After all, you are no ordinary Wizard.

Best Wishes,

Cornelius Fudge

Minister of Magic

This was the tenth time Harry had read the letter from the Ministry, and each time he went over it he began to feel worse about the events that had occurred a few short hours ago with Hermione and Ron.

Being selected as an auror was a dream come true. Nothing would make him happier than to rid the world of dark magic, most especially Lord Voldemort, the evil wizard responsible for killing his parents, Lily & James. Aurors devoted their lives to finding the Dark Lord and his evil followers, the Death Eaters. Their goal was to ensure safety for the wizarding and muggle worlds. To be chosen for the program, was one of the greatest honors bestowed upon a wizard. Harry was flattered and excited, and at the same time extremely disappointed that this great accomplishment couldn't be shared with his two best friends.

Sighing inwardly, he folded the letter and tucked it into his pocket as he made his way back towards the castle for his last night at Hogwarts.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"Harry!" Hermione's frantic voice called out to him as he entered the Gryffindor common room. "We've been waiting for you."

"We?" Harry asked as he walked towards her and noticed Ron sitting in a chair beside the fire.

"Hermione has a plan." Ron spoke as he got up from his seat and walked across the room. "I might not agree with it, but knowing how right she usually is, it's probably best for all of us."

"It's nice to have you talking to me again." He said in a slightly happier tone than the one he had been using.

"You'll have to thank Hermione for that." He replied, nodding in her direction. "She's the voice of reason. Made me realize how silly it would be to end seven years of friendship on a sour note." Ron continued as he moved closer to Harry. "We've had a lot of great times here, and I don't want things to end forever because of one mistake. Mates?"

Ron smiled, extending his hand towards Harry which he graciously accepted.

"Now that's better!" Hermione beamed as happy tears streamed down her face, "I can't imagine how dismal graduation would have been with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley not on speaking terms."

"What about Hermione Granger?" Harry asked, "Last I checked, this duo was a trio."

"Not after tomorrow we aren't." Hermione cried, her happy tears once again becoming sad.

"What are you talking about?" Harry asked curiously. "Are you going somewhere after graduation?"

"Her brilliant plan." Ron replied, rolling his eyes. "Hermione, I still don't think it's necessary. I forgive you and Harry. It was a mistake, that's all."

"No, Ron." She shook her head as she continued to sob. "What happened tonight wasn't a mistake, which is why I have to do what I am about to do. After graduation, I am going to stay away from both of you for the next five years."

"What?" Harry exclaimed in complete shock, "Hermione, that is crazy! For the last seven years we've all been inseparable! How is staying away from us going to solve a problem that doesn't even exist? It's ridiculous!"

"No, it isn't ridiculous, Harry. There *is* a problem." She wept, reaching to wipe the tears from her eyes. "I love you both and both of you love me."

"You love him?" Ron asked after realizing how serious this predicament had become.

Hermione nodded.

"And do you love her?" He questioned Harry who also responded with a nod of his head.

"Bloody hell." Was the only thing he could think to say in the midst of such emotional chaos

"I know this is a mess, and I am really sorry." Hermione sighed, "Unfortunately, cleverness can only take a witch so far. I wish there was a better answer than staying away from both of you, but I can't think of one. All I know is that if you love someone, you have to let them go. At the end of the five years, one of you is going to come back to me or I am going to come back to one of you, I just know it. True love will wait forever, but infatuation will simply fade over time."

"She's right you know." Harry begrudgingly agreed. "As hard as life is going to be without you, it'd be harder for the three of us to live in awkwardness for the next five years." He sighed as he turned to face Hermione, "It's going to kill me not to see you every day, but I know you and I know you have impeccable judgment. There's no doubt in my mind things will work out in the end."

"Thank you, Harry." Hermione smiled at him. "How about you Ron?"

"Bloody Hell." He shrugged, "I guess I don't really have a choice, but if it makes you happy, than so be it."

"This decision makes me many things, Ron." Hermione said softly, "but happy is definitely not one of them. However, I know in my heart it's for the best."

"It's a good heart, too." Harry exclaimed. "It's going to make the right decision."

"Absolutely." Ron nodded as they both smiled at her lovingly and the three embraced each other tightly knowing it was going to be one of their last great memories together for quite some time.

"Well then, now that we've settled that, I think we should get to bed." Hermione suggested as she made her way towards the stairs. "After all, tomorrow is a long day."

"Yea," Harry thought to himself as he started up the stairs with Ron close behind, "but an even longer five years."

3. Pomp, Circumstance, and The Parting of Ways

Chapter 3- Pomp, Circumstance, and The Parting of Ways

"Harry Potter must wake up, Harry Potter must wake up!"

A familiarly annoying voiced called through the dark bedroom as Harry reached for his glasses that were placed on the nightstand and rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

"Dobby?" He mumbled sitting up and looking at the clock. Five o'clock. Four hours before the graduation was set to begin.

"Harry Potter must follow Dobby, sir. Professor Dumbledore is waiting. Please hurry, Sir. He wishes to see you immediately." Dobby insisted as he hopped on the bed and began pulling the covers off of him.

"All right, all right!" He exclaimed, reluctantly getting up and following the eager House Elf from the dormotories, "but would you please stop shouting, Dobby! Just because I will have to attend graduation looking like a Zombie doesn't mean the rest of the Bloody house should have to lose sleep!"

With that, the young wizard and the eager to please House Elf made their way through the portrait whole towards the awaiting Headmaster.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"Well done, Dobby!" A most jovial Dumbledore beamed as the two of them entered his office. "You may go now. Thank you for your help."

Dobby smiled and bowed then snapped his fingers, vanishing out of sight.

"Sit down please, Harry." Dumbledore said as he motioned to the chair placed in front of his desk as he took a seat behind it. "I hate to wake you so early on a most important day, but there is one last thing I have to do before you leave Hogwarts."

"That's okay, Professor." He responded with a yawn, "I'd just nodded off not long before Dobby popped up. Haven't been able to sleep much tonight."

"Ahhh, that's understandable." He replied, "You're leaving behind Hogwarts and heading out into the wizarding world. The unknown is always a frightening prospect, but there is no doubt in my mind that you will conquer whatever obstacles may cross your path and that you will make a most impressive auror after you've completed the extensive training program with Professor Moody and his colleagues. That is of course if you've decided to accept the offer from the Ministry?"

"Oh yes, Sir. Definitely." Harry responded with assurance as he fidgeted around in his seat, unable to get comfortable. "I am honored to have been selected to join the crusade against dark magic. I hope to one day rid the world of the Lord Voldemort and his followers once and for all."

"Splendid!" Dumbledore grinned proudly, "I know you will do well, Harry, as you always do when you are put to the ultimate test. I see a successful future for you, as well as for Mr. Weasley, and of course, Ms. Granger, our new Arithmancy Professor."

"Hermione is going to be Professor of Arithmancy?" He asked surprised.

"Yes, I informed her just last night." He said, equally shocked that Harry didn't know. "Professor Vector will be retiring, and I know how much she loves the subject and how it comes so naturally to her. We were a little hesitant considering she's just going to be turning 18, but given the fact that she had a 584 overall average, we were willing to make an exception. She's ecstatic about it, but I can't believe she hadn't mentioned it to you. Is something wrong?"

"It's a long story." Harry answered sadly.

"Excellent!" He clapped with excitement, "I love a long story! Why don't you tell me what happened, Harry. Perhaps I can offer a few words of wisdom, or at the very least, have the best new bit of gossip at breakfast."

Harry couldn't help but laugh. Dumbledore always seemed to be there after he'd faced a challenge and always offered insight as well as humor to make the situation better. With a deep breath, Harry informed him of all the events that had occurred on the Quidditch Field and in the Common Room last night. He told him everything from the kiss to the pact, and when he finished, he'd felt as though a ton of bricks had been lifted from his shoulders.

"Tackling a Mountain Troll and a Basilisk doesn't seem quite so difficult now that you're in the middle of a love triangle?" Dumbledore chuckled.

"At this point, I'd prefer either one." Harry muttered unenthusiastically.

"Well, Harry, I had a feeling it might come to this one day. The three of you have known each other long before romantic feelings had entered the picture. It's only natural that once puberty kicks in, things get...complicated."

"And how.." Harry sighed, slumping back down in his chair.

"I know things seem bleak now, Harry." Dumbledore said in a reassuring tone, "But keep in mind that there are times in our lives when we must make sacrifices and decisions that may not seem wise in the beginning, but will work out for the best in the long run. I've known all of you for seven years. I've seen you learn, I've seen you conquer, and I've seen you grow. All of you are mere shadows of the young first years who walked through those doors. You've all evolved and matured and are ready to face anything that comes your way. Consider this pact the first of many crossroads in your life."

Reaching under his desk, he pulled up a large gift box and handed it to Harry smiling.

"So what if the Tenacious Trio will be parting ways for awhile? When things get rough over the next five years, you will have your memories for comfort, and that brings me to the reason I had Dobby bring you here."

Smiling graciously, Harry accepted the box from Dumbledore and proceeded to open it.

"Professor!" Harry gasped in amazement as he removed the contents from the box, "A pensieve! Thank you so much! This is incredible!"

"You're very welcome, Harry." Dumbledore smiled, "I remember fourth year when you stumbled upon my pensieve. I figured it would be the best graduation gift for you, especially given your current situation. Wonderful invention, the pensieve. You'll be able to reflect on the good memories when the bad ones become too much to bear."

"Thank you, Professor." Harry replied in a somber tone. "I can't tell you how much your insight has meant to me over the last seven years. I am lucky to have spent my time at Hogwarts with you as Headmaster. I'm certain many of the first memories that I put into this pensieve will be of our enligtening conversations."

"Believe me, the pleasure has been mine." Dumbledore answered modestly. "It isn't everyday that a young wizard comes to Hogwarts as a celebrity and leaves a legend. I saw potential from the day you were sorted, and I was not disappointed at all. You are going to go on to many exciting and dangerous events, but I know you are ready. There is a reason that you were the Boy Who Lived. You were destined for extraordinary things, Harry, and I know you then when you are put to the ultimate tests in the wizarding world, you won't let us down."

"Eztraordinary." Harry repeated with a chuckle. "I've heard that word a lot recently."

"And I am certain you will hear it many more times." Dumbledore replied as he glanced over at the clock on his desk. "Oh Dear! Look at that, six-thirty. I am sorry to have kept you so long, Harry. I know you have a big day ahead of you."

"It's just the beginning, Professor. Graduation will be a cakewalk compared to spending the next five years away from Hermione."

"Have faith, Harry." Dumbledore answered in a voice full of confidence. "Things usually have a funny way of working out in the end. But I think that's something you've experienced numerous times over years here at Hogwarts."

Harry smiled at the eccentric, elderly man as he recalled the worst of times during his schooling and how, in the end, things did seem to fall into place.

"Thank you, Professor. I will see you at graduation."

"So long, Harry! Don't be a stranger!" Dumbledore called out as the young wizard was making his way down the stairs. "Just because you've made a pact to keep from Hermione for the next five years doesn't mean you have to stay away from the rest of us!"

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The next few hours flew by for Harry and before it knew it, the graduation ceremony had come to an end. Dumbledore had given an excellent and inspiring speech which beautifully summed up everything that had taken place and how all of the graduates had grown over the last seven years. When he finished, the Official Witchcraft & Wizardry certificates were presented and then it was off to Great Hall for one last feast and one last chance to see Hermione before they parted ways.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Well done, Harry!" Sirius Black's proud voice echoed as he ran to greet his Godson after everyone was settled in the Great Hall. "Your Mum and Dad would be proud."

Harry smiled as he embraced his beloved Godfather. It had been two years since his name was cleared in the murder of Harry's parents, Lily & James. The Ministry of Magic stumbled across Peter Pettigrew, the real person responsible helping Lord Voldemort murder the Potter's, while he was trying to lure several young wizards to the dark side. Since then, Harry had left the Dursley's to live with Sirius and he'd never been happier.

"Thanks, Sirius. I am just glad you're free so I had you here with me today. It made it even better."

"Harry, if I had to transfigure into Padfoot and hide under Hagrid's coat, *nothing* would have stopped me from seeing you graduate an official Wizard. You've grown into a fine young man, and I'm so pleased that I've gotten to see it happen right before my very eyes."

"'ll right if I add to the 'praisin then?" Hagrid's rugged voice echoed as Sirius and Harry turned to face the gentle Giant standing behind them with a tearstained face. "You did a fine job, up 'ere, 'Arry. Can't believe seven years 'ave gone so fast. 'Yer gonna make a fine wizard out there, 'Arry, always knew ya would, but I sure am gonna miss ya."

"I'll miss you, too, Hagrid." He said with a warm smile as he gave him a loving hug, "But don't cry, please. I'll always be in touch."

"Yer mean it?" Hagrid asked with hope as he pulled out a tissue and blew his nose rather loudly, drawing the attention of several Ravenclaw graduates and their families. "Ya aren't gonna forget about me when ya go off to study as an Auror, are ya?

Harry smiled. "Hagrid, I assure you that you're one person I could *never* forget."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Harry spent the next hour or so being congratulated by his friends and Professors, including Professor Lupin who'd come back especially for the occasion, but the whole time his mind was set on one thing: Saying goodbye to Hermione.

"Harry!" Ron's voice called out as he ran to his friend. "I've been lookin' all over for you. Hermione wants to see you. She's waiting in the library."

"The library? Why on earth does she want to see me there?" He asked with a puzzled look.

"Harry, this is *Hermione* we're talking about," Ron answered with a grin, "if she is away from books for too long, I think she starts breaking out in hives! Seriously, mate. She wants to talk to you without interruption. Since *she* is the only one who'd be in a library when everyone else is partying, she decided it would be the best place to go."

"You've already seen her then?" Harry asked as he watched the lighthearted expression on Ron's face suddenly turn to a saddened one.

"Yea, it's why I'm trying to joke about it." He sighed, "Can't believe I won't have her to pick on for five years."

"I know." Harry nodded, "I can't imagine it, either. But hey, I'll still see you, right?"

"Definitely. In fact, I think you and I should have a talk soon.."

"All right then. I think that would be good for both of us. " Harry replied and then turned towards the exit of the hallway. "I guess I better get a move on, then. I've probably got about five minutes to say everything I won't be able to for the next five years."

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"I thought you'd chickened out on me." Hermione smiled through her tears as she watched Harry enter the library and head towards the table where she was sitting.

"Never." He shook his head as he took the seat in front of her and watched as she bit down on her quivering lip, trying desperately not to break down. "I just walked slowly because I was thinking of what to say to sum up all that we've shared in such a short amount of time."

"I ran into the same problem last night." Hermione wept as she slid an envelope across the table, "Which is why I wrote you this letter. I know if I try and say everything I will lose it and may not be able to go through with this, so I figured writing would be the best alternative."

"Books and cleverness." Harry grinned through his sadness as he picked up the letter and tucked it away in his robes. "Always have that mind working, Granger."

"Books and cleverness are minimal qualities when compared to the capacity for friendship and bravery you posess, Potter. Or should I say, Auror?"

"Spoken like a true Professor." Harry chuckled, "The scholars of arithmancy will be most fortunate to have you as there instructor, just as I have been most fortunate to have you as a friend."

"Oh Harry," she sobbed, the tears flowing freely down her face. "When you say those things it makes this so much harder.."

"I'm sorry," He said as his own voice began to crack. "I don't want to hurt you anymore than I have, Hermione. I adore you and as hard as this is going to be, I know everything will work out the way that it should. There's just one promise I want you to make."

"Anything." She sniffled as she wiped her face.

"No matter who you choose, we will always be friends."

She smiled at him lovingly. "Deal."

"All right then." He said as he got up from his seat. "I guess it's time. The longer we wait, the harder it's going to be."

She nodded in agreement as they both got up from their seats and walked towards each other.

"Good-" Harry began but she silenced him with a finger to his lips.

"See you later. Don't say good-bye. It's too final."

He nodded, "I'll see you later, Hermione. But remember if anything happens and you ever need me or anything, I'm just an owl away."

"I know that. I'm keeping that in mind to help get me through this." She sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck and embracing him tightly. "Harry, please be careful."

"I will." He assured her, "And you just make me proud by helping to mold the brilliant wizarding minds with your keen knowledge of Arithmancy?"

"Have I ever let you down before?" She said with a laugh as she pulled away to look at him.

"Never."

He replied as he inched his face closer to hers and ran a hand through her silky hair. She sighed at the feel of his touch to her skin and trembled as he placed his lips to hers in a gentle, tender kiss.

"I love you."

"I love you, too." She whispered back as she gave him one last look, her face once again stained with tears.

He stared at her for a moment, wanting to remember her just like this. She was a vision. An Angel. At that moment he silently thanked Dumbledore for his gift and decided this would be a perfect first memory to store in his pensieve. One that would help him through the next five years without her.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

My Dearest Harry,

I've spent the last few hours in silent reverie trying to find the right words to describe what I am feeling right now. It's now two in the morning and I'm only on my second sentence. That should give you an idea as to how difficult this decision has been for me.

I've spent the last seven years of my life as a best friend to the two most amazing men I have ever known. You and Ron. Both of you have helped me grow as a person, and I would like to think that I in return, helped you two to grow as well. Before Hogwarts, my life was studying (Hard to imagine, isn't it?). I was a muggle born witch who was treated horribly by my peers for being "different". It was because of that I shut the world out and buried myself in books. Then, lo and behold, I was accepted to the most presitigous school of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the world, and it was there that I met you two and my life hasn't been the same since.

After getting acquainted with you both, I managed to come out of my shell, so to speak. I put the books down (even if it wasn't very often), broke a few rules, and had the time of my life. If I could go back, there isn't one second of it all that I would change because I've never been happier than I was when I was with the two of you. Each of you has a unique personality, but both of you are young man of extraordinary character and courage, and I've been blessed to watch the both of you excel as wizards and evolve as people.

It took Ron four years to notice I was a girl and five years to grow out of his jealous stage. I remember a time when he wouldn't talk to you because you were named one of the School Champions and just last night he forgave us both for our betrayal. It's astonishing to think about how much he's changed, and at the same time, manage to keep his wit and charm. I love him inspite of his faults and I love him because he always knows how to make me laugh.

And then there is you, Harry Potter. The Boy Who Lived. The Wizarding Wonder before he even knew he was a wizard. I remember when we first started school and I knew more about your life than you did (Now that I think about it, it was kind of scary on my part, wasn't it?), and look at you now. You've found yourself. You've lived up to the legacy and you should be proud. Your courage and loyalty is an inspiration to us all. Your pure heart and unselfish love is going to guide you to greatness as an auror because you are great in all that you do. You are my hero. When the laughter stops and the obstacles appear, you are the one who steps up to conquer them for the rest of us. When the smiles fade and the tears begin to fall, you're the one who comforts me and makes me feel as though everything is going to be all right. It is for all these reasons that I love you. Not because you are The Boy Who Lived, but because you are who you are and fame and glory hasn't changed that at all.

It's three in the morning now and this letter contains many more feelings than it did an hour ago, but it still doesn't seem to say nearly enough. However, if I keep writing, I still won't be done when the five years is up, so I am calling it a night (morning rather).

Good luck to you, Harry. I know that there is still much more of your story to be told, I just hope I won't miss out on too much of it.

Love always,

Hermione

P.S.- I was right when I said books and cleverness aren't that important. They aren't worth a damn when it comes to matters of the heart.

*********************

Harry tucked the letter in his pocket after reading it for the tenth and gazed out of his bedroom window and on to the night sky. It had been such a long day, but nothing compared to the long seperation from Hermione. With a sigh he removed his glasses and laid back on the bed. At that very moment, the clock struck midnight.

One day down, 1,824 more to go.

4. Operation Sun & Moon

Author’s Note: I know there isn’t much H&H in this Chapter, but I promise it is coming! Please be patient with me :)

Chapter 4- Operation Sun & Moon

The early summer winds swept quietly through the early morning Hogsmeade air. It had been 319 hours, 40 minutes, and 27 seconds since the last day Harry had seen Hermione. Not that he was counting or anything.

Harry entered the Three Broomsticks to find it almost empty except for a few stragglers seated at the bar, chatting with the owner, Madam Rosmerta, who happened to be dating Harry's Godfather, Sirius Black.

"Harry!" Her bright smile greeted him as she looked up from her conversation with the patrons and motioned him over to the bar. "What brings you here so early?"

"Hello, Rosmerta." He grinned back, seating himself on a stool. "I'm meeting Ron in a bit..."

"Oh," She replied, her cheerful expression fading to one of concern. "Everything all right with you two, and your umm, *situation*?"

Harry let out a hearty laugh. "I take it Sirius has told you?"

"Once or twice." She winked.

"Since we are on the subject, how are things with you and *Padfoot* going?"

"Harry Potter! Is that really any of your business?"

"Rosmerta, you are talking to The Boy Who Lived, remember? My entire life has been everybody else's business. It's only fair that I get to hear some gossip, too." He teased as he removed his cloak. "Besides, considering the fact that my love life is in dire straits, it would be nice to hear that those closest to me are happy."

"Is that a nice way to be nosey?" She smirked at him.

"You see it as being nosey, I see it as living vicariously."

She giggled at his comments. "You sure are a smooth talker, Harry. Reminds me a lot of your Father."

Harry grinned widely, it always made him happy to hear people compare him to either of his parents. "Really?"

"Really." She nodded, "And if you must know, things between Sirius and I couldn't be better. I just hope things work out for you. You've really got your Godfather worried about you, Harry."

"I'll be fine." He answered assuringly, "The next few years without will be tough, but I have Auror training, Remus, Sirius, You, Hagrid, and all to get me through it, and Ron…"

"And speak of the Devil!" Rosmerta beamed as the youngest Weasley soon walked through the front door.

"Hello Rosmerta, Harry."

"Hello, Ron." Rosmerta replied, as did Harry. "What can I get you boys to drink?"

"A Butterbeer, please."

"Same for me, thanks."

"Coming right up!" Rosmerta smiled as she headed off for the drinks and the two young men sat down at a nearby table.

"So how are you, Ron?" Harry asked, "I got your owl saying you had some news to tell me in person, so what's up."

"Well," He said, the smile on his face glowing even more, "I've had an offer from a Quidditch team as a backup Keeper. The Bigonville Bombers. It's not the Chudley Canons, but it's a start!"

"That's great!"

Harry beamed, extremely happy for his best friend's accomplishment. During the summer between fourth and fifth year, Ron had a huge growth spurt. He'd always been tall, but when he returned to Hogwart's that September he was a towering Six foot four inches, and had developed a very burly build, not to mention quite a talent for playing Quidditch. He replaced Oliver Wood as Gryffindor's Keeper, and even tied his record with 133 consecutive saves. He probably would have done even better had Draco Malfoy not sent a rogue Bludger at his head, rendering him unconscious for first two games of seventh year. He did recover in time for them to beat Slytherin for the school's Quidditch Cup.

Ron hadn't only grown physically in his last three years at Hogwarts, but emotionally as well. He'd worked on his jealousy issues, and started paying more attention to schoolwork. He even managed to work on his fear of spiders. He overcame a lot of his flaws and still managed to maintain the humor and loyalty that made him such a fantastic friend. These changes were in large part do to Hermione. She had a remarkable way of pulling them back in when they were about to go too far. Her instincts and intelligence helped enlighten the two young men on so many levels. The more he thought about all of the wonderful things she'd done for he and Ron over the last seven years, the more he began to miss her. She was their rock, and without her there, they didn't seem as infallible as they had at Hogwarts.

"Harry?" Ron called out, waving his hands in front of the young wizard's entranced face. "Are you listening to me, mate?"

"Sorry," Harry said, shaking his head as he came back from his thoughts of Hermione. "What were you saying?"

"I said thanks. It's going to be rough without seeing you and the rest of the gang, but I figure if I can survive without Hermione, I can make it on my own for awhile."

"Holy Cricket, I hadn't thought of that." Harry sighed, realizing that he was going to be losing not one, but two best friends. "What am I gonna do without both of you?"

"You'll be fine, Harry." Ron assured him, sipping the Butterbeer that Madam Rosmerta had brought to the table while Harry was daydreaming. "You've always done well when facing a challenge. I have no doubt that you will be nothing less than a great Auror, just as Hermione will master teaching Arithmancy. It's *me* that I worry about."

"Why would you say that? You're a great wizard and a bloody good Keeper, too. You're going to do just fine."

"Maybe." He shrugged, not as certain as his best friend. "It won't be easy trying to find who Ron Weasley is out of the shadow of his brothers, and Harry Potter."

"Don't say that!" Harry insisted, his voice rising slightly. "You've done well for yourself, Ron. You were a Quidditch success, you scored a 10 on your O.W.L.S., you even passed Potions with a higher percentage than I did! You weren't hidden in my shadow, you were beside me as my equal."

"First of all, I scored *one* point higher than you in potions. Secondly, thanks for having the confidence in me that I lack." He grinned, watching as his best friend calmed down.

"You're welcome." Harry said as he held up his Butterbeer, "Here's to Aurors, Arithmancy, Quidditch Keepers, and the trio's success!"

"I'll drink to that!" Ron laughed, as he gulped some Butterbeer and then turned to look at the clock above the bar. "Bloody hell, look at the time! My train to Bigonville leaves in an hour!"

"Well, you better get going then." Harry said sadly as he got up from his seat. "You take care of yourself, Weasley. And don't get too bloodied up out there."

"I could say the same for you, Potter. Being an Auror isn't safe job, so I want you to promise me one thing?" Ron asked in a serious tone.

"I know, I know, I'll be careful." Harry answered rolling his eyes. He'd made this promise seven times already.

"Actually, I was going to tell you to ask Moody how to do that Ferret trick. It'd be nice to see Draco as one again, not to mention the devil incarnate Lucius and his wife who looks like someone hit her with a Medusa hex, but I want you to be careful, too." He teased, as he pulled on his cloak and sighed. "I guess this is so long then."

"Good luck, Ron, and keep in touch." Harry said sadly, as he embraced his dear friend.

"Owls work both ways you know." He reminded as he broke from their hug. "I wanna hear all about the no good Death Eaters you send to Azkaban."

"Only, after you break the goal blocking record."

"Deal. Well, I better go to the burrow and say farewell to Mum, Dad, and the gang. See you soon!"

And with a pop, he was gone. For the second time in a fortnight, Harry felt a sense of emptiness overcome him. Not only had he had to let go of Hermione, but now Ron was gone, too. Things were going to be much lonelier as a solo act.

1. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"There he is now, Auror Extraordinaire!" Sirius Black mused, as he and Remus Lupin entered The Three Broomsticks and caught sight of a moping Harry.

"What are you two doing here?" Harry asked, surprised to see the both of them.

"Do you *really* have to ask that?" Remus laughed, nudging Sirius as he pointed to Rosmerta, who was very delighted to see who had just entered the bar.

"Ah, silly me." He grinned, winking at Lupin as Sirius flirted shamelessly with Rosmerta from across the room, "Here to uh, *admire* the scenery, are we?"

"And what a sight it is," Sirius smirked, slowly turning his head back to the table. "But actually, we came to cheer you up. This came for you this morning."

Harry smiled widely as Sirius handed him a letter with Hermione's handwriting on the envelope. He tore into it ferociously, desperate to read her words. After all, it was all he had to hold him over for the next five years

My dearest Harry,

I received word from Ron yesterday that he will be leaving to join a Professional Quidditch team. While I am happy that he is living his dreams, I realize that this has to be difficult for you. You've been through so much lately and I know that you have Sirius, Remus, Dumbledore, and Auror training to keep you going, but I can't help but worry. Please remember that even though I can't be there in body right now, I am forever in your heart as you are in mine.

I hope to hear from you soon and that you will tell me I am just being paranoid as usual. You are a strong and courageous person, it's foolish to believe you can't survive on your own, but you know me, always the one to worry.

Take care, and please keep in touch.

Love Always,
Hermione

P.S. Send my best to Sirius and Remus.

Harry's heart sank as he read her words. She knew him so well, even in her state of denial. Yes, he'd been on his own before, but having her and Ron by his side for the last seven years had made him selfish. He needed them desperately, especially Hermione.

"She sends her best." Harry sighed, putting the letter away and gulping his Butterbeer.

"It'll be all right, Lad." Remus said reassuringly, as he placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"Remus' right, Harry." Sirius agreed, once again watching intently as Rosmerta waited on customers across the room. "You aren't the first wizard stuck in a love triangle, ya know."

"You sound like an expert." Harry answered in a snarky tone. "What do you know about it?"

"Plenty." Sirius replied, "Do you know the name of the first girl I had a crush on at Hogwarts?"

"No." He shook his head, not interested in hearing anything right now.

"Lily."

Harry's jaw dropped as he gazed at Sirius, not believing what he'd just heard.

"You mean my Mum?"

"Yep, I was smitten with her for about a month, and then..."

"And then what?" Harry asked impatiently.

"And then Farah, Wendy, Lauren, Michelle. Sirius lusted after girls like they were Bertie Bott's jelly beans. One of *every* flavor, and I mean *every* flavor!" Remus interrupted with a grin.

"They didn't call me Padfoot for nothing. I got around!" Sirius teased. "In all seriousness, Harry. It never would have worked for your Mum and me because she was meant to be with your Father. I knew that from the beginning, I just wish it was as easy for you as it had been for us back then."

"Thanks, Sirius. I just hope I can get through it."

"Hey if Remus can, you can, too." He assured him, as he motioned for Rosmerta.

"What do you mean if Remus can?" Harry asked, intrigued by the comment.

"Nothing!" Remus replied quickly. "He is talking nonsense."

"Oh, am I?" Sirius laughed, "Rosmerta my love, aside from Lily and James, who was the next biggest couple when we were at Hogwarts?"

"Remus and Athena, of course." She smiled, as she sat on Sirius' lap.

"Athena?" Harry repeated, dying to know more about Remus' mystery girl.

"You know Sirius, you weren't only a ladies man, but you were the biggest pain in the ass ever!" Remus answered, a bit perturbed with all this prying into his past. "I'm glad to see you've become a one woman man, but you really should try to work on the second thing. Anyway, I guess there is no denying it now, yes I had a girlfriend at Hogwarts and her name was Athena Helios. We dated from the beginning of sixth year until graduation. I haven't seen her since. Is that enough for all of you?"

"Hardly," Harry responded quickly. "What happened to her?"

"What do you think?" Remus sulked, "I was a werewolf. When the truth came out, she was hurt and I decided it she would be better off without me. She left to teach in Ireland and I haven't seen her since."

"Why am I suddenly getting deja vu?" Harry replied, only half kidding.

"Hey Remus, I thought that potion Snape had come up with last year had cured you of being a werewolf?" Rosmerta asked curiously.

"So then, Moony," Sirius grinned, "Why haven't you gone after your Sun?"

"His sun?" Harry questioned.

"Her name meant sun, and his meant moon." Sirius explained. "You should have seen the love letters. They were sappier than a forest full of Maple Trees..."

"I am so glad that the losing the great love of my life entertains you so." Remus shot back unamused. "With friends like you, Sirius, who needs enemies?"

Sirius and Rosmerta couldn't help but laugh, but Harry's mind was too busy spinning with ideas to find it funny.

"So why didn't you go after her, Remus?"

"What's the point? He shrugged. "It was a long time ago, Harry. She's probably married with children by now."

"But how do you know for sure?" Harry persisted.

"I don't, I just..."

"He has a feeling. The Sun and the Moon share a deep connection, you know..." Sirius quipped, as Rosmerta buried her head in his neck to suppress her giggles.

"You are an insufferable git, you know that, don't you?" Remus said, shaking his head hopelessly at the joking Sirius.

"Well, I hate to run, but I have to make a quick stop at the library." Harry said as he got up from his chair and put on his cloak.

"You really are going through Hermione withdrawal. The library? Going to get misty eyed over all those wizarding books she made you read over the years?" Sirius teased.

But Harry paid him no attention. If he couldn't work things out for Hermione, he could at least try to help Lupin. He said a quick goodbye and then set out on his mission: Operation Sun & Moon.

5. Books & Cleverness

Chapter 5- Books & Cleverness

The Artemis Saraswati Library was unusually crowded for a Saturday afternoon. Harry inched his way through the masses of wizards that were gathered around the thousands of shelves of the only research center in Hogsmeade. It took him a good ten minutes to make it to the information desk, and another twenty for him to finally find out what section would lead him to information on former Hogwarts students, and most specifically, Athena Helios.

"What House was she in?" The grumpy Librarian asked hastily as her eyes glared at Harry above her half moon glasses.

"Gryffindor." He replied, as he watched her flip rapidly through a large book in front of her. "All right, you'll be wanting section G.G. 1970-1980. That will have all of Godric's graduates from that decade. Move along, then."

"Thank you, Ma'am." Harry answered with a gracious smile, but the old woman just scoffed and began assisting the next person in line.

"So much for service with a smile." Harry muttered to himself, as he once again made his way through the maddening crowds and in search of Lupin's long lost love.

******************************

"G.G. 1930-1940, G.G. 1940-1950," Harry was whispering to himself as he walked along the long aisles of books searching for the correct section. To his surprise, the Gryffindor area was practically deserted. He'd only seen a few wizards walking by since he started way back in G.G. 1100.

"1960-70, ahh, yes!" Harry exclaimed excitedly as he pulled a large, thick book from the shelf and opened its front cover, "A complete listing of the Past and Present Hogwarts students from 1970-1980. Excellent!"

1. Anxious to begin his search, Harry spun around frantically to find an empty study table, only to collide with a young witch passing by.

"Oh! I am so sorry!" Her apologetic voice cried, as she reached down to pick up the array of papers she'd been carrying which were now scattered across the floor. "I was so busy with my work that I wasn't paying attention to where I was walking, please forgive me..."

Harry shook his head in disbelief as he reached down to help pick up the fallen parchment. That voice, that innocent yet seductive voice. That hair, that flowing, silky hair. But it couldn't be, could it?

At that very moment, she looked up at him and all of his minds racing questions were answered.

"Hermione!"

"Harry..." She responded in astonishment. "What are you doing here?"

But he couldn't answer.

The site of her had left him speechless. It'd only been two weeks since he'd seen her last, but somehow; she looked even more beautiful. He watched in awe as she brushed a stray hair from her face, as her eyes twinkled and a captivating smile slowly curved onto her full, sensuous lips. Hermione didn't need a wand, everything about her oozed magic.

"I uhh," He began, clearing his throat. "I was umm, just doing some research on Remus' old girlfriend from school, Aphrodisiac."

"I beg your pardon?" She asked as she gave him a puzzled stare.

"Athena!" He answered quickly, and very loudly as several people turned to stare at him, "Athena Helios, yeah sorry. That's the one."

"Are you feeling all right?" She asked worriedly.

"Yes, fine, fine. Just a little surprised to see you here." He replied as he fidgeted with the string on his cloak and continued gawking at Hermione.

"Now I know you are feeling ill." She said with a laugh, "You're surprised to see *me* in a library? If anything, *I* am the one who should be shocked!"

"Not surprised to see you here, just surprised to see *you*." He said with a nervous grin.

"Well, rest assured this is the *last* place I thought I'd catch up with you or Ron. It's part of the reason I spend so much time here. I figured it'd be safe. Him being allergic to books, and you with the attention span of a blast ended skrewt."

"God, she was sexy when she was insulting him." Harry thought to himself as he gave her the once over. Just watching her stand there was causing him to lose all self-control. It was at that moment he wished he'd paid a little more attention when Flitwick was teaching Composure Charms.

"Harry, are you sure you aren't ill? St. Mungo's is just down the road, I can see you there if you'd like..." Hermione looked at him with concern. She'd never seen him like this before and was really becoming worried.

"No!" He insisted as his voice cracked and she continued to stare at him oddly. "I'm fine, I just really need to help Lupin out. I know he's lonely, especially with Sirius being with Rosmerta now. I'd like to give him a second chance for love. After all, I know what it's to be the third whe-"

"Ahem," She coughed, in a desperate attempt to change the subject as the awkwardness between them escalated to an even higher level. "Perhaps I could take a look then? You know research is my specialty, and I just adore Remus. I'd like to see him happy. I'd hate for *anyone* to feel like a third wheel."

Harry nodded as he handed her the book and watched attentively as she began to peruse through the pages.

"Hmm, Helios, Athena...where could you be?"

But Harry paid no attention to her words; he was too busy staring at the vision standing before him. It was hard to imagine that anyone could be so incredibly tantalizing while lost in between the covers of a yearbook, but she was. Even the way she turned the pages gracefully and gently, was enough to make his mind become so discombobulated that someone might think he'd been struck with an extra potent memory charm. Why was he standing here? He suddenly thought to himself as he watched her turn her head so her hair would fall over her shoulder and her nose grimaced in concentration. He wasn't worthy to be mere inches from this goddess that stood before him. No one was. It was as though Aphrodite herself had fallen from Mt. Olympus and landed by his side. To be this close to something so provocative and enchanting would make any man lose his mind. But it was a small price to pay. Just being in her presence made insanity seem like an eternity in paradise.

"Here she is!" Hermione squealed with delight, causing Harry to back from his trance. "Athena Helios, model Gryffindor. Outstanding Prefect, awarding winning Quidditch Chaser, scored 13 O.W.L.S., and was loved by all of her teachers and fellow students, but none more than Remus J. Lupin!" Hermione smiled brightly as she grabbed Harry's arm and squeezed it tightly. "Oh Harry! Isn't that romantic! It's so uplifting to read a real life love story!"

"Ha, *uplifting*," Harry laughed nervously as sweat formed on his brow, and he looked down at her hand still clutching him tightly. "Good word. *Very* appropriate."

"An excellent Potions student, Athena went on to teach the subject at the Blarneystone Academy for Primary Wizarding Education in Dublin and currently resides at 31 Shamrock Road with her Mother, Desmond, and pet cat, Ashling...Oh look!"

She jumped excitedly, and moved closer to him as Harry felt his heart to pound and his mind race. His thoughts stormed through his head, and suddenly and rather strangely the memory of his first potions lessons with Snape overcame him "Bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses." He sighed "if only she *knew* the effect she was having on him. It was much stronger than anything he could have ever brewed in a cauldron. She was intoxicating and living proof that even The Boy Who Lived had an Achilles' Heel.

"It's Athena and Remus...aren't they just precious!" Hermione exclaimed joyously as she pointed to a black and white picture of the two of them. Remus was smiling happily, his arms around Athena's waist as she looked up at him with complete adoration and her long, raven hair flew through the wind. "Oh Harry, you just *have* to find her! They look perfect together!"

He smiled at her and then studied the picture. They did look as though they were made for each other. So happy, so in love. It reminded him of another duo, currently much closer than Remus and Athena.

"I will." He assured, "I won't let him down. He needs her, and I need to see him happy. Restore my faith in love a bit."

"Things always work out in the end, Harry. You have to believe that." She smiled at him through her own sadness. "Don't lose faith, Potter."

"I won't," He nodded.

"Good." She replied with a smile, handing him back the book, "then I guess I better get going. I only came by to pick up the first few copies of my book, I still have a lot of preparation for class before school starts again..."

"Your book?" He asked curiously.

"Yes," She answered proudly, reaching into her bag and pulling out a rather large textbook offering it to Harry. "I didn't like any of the other books on Arithmancy, so I decided to write my own."

"The Alluring Art of Arithmancy, by Hermione Granger" He read aloud with a laugh. "Pretty impressive, but a bit hefty for the first years, don't ya think?"

"Nonsense! It's only 997 pages long! I read Hogwarts: A History the summer before first year and that was 1,254 pages!" She in a rather defensive tone.

"Hermione, Hogwarts: A History wasn't required first year reading. I do think it was on Filch's list for punishment and torture though..." Harry chuckled.

"Go ahead, laugh it up." She replied as she stuffed her papers into her bag and folded her arms across her chest, "You watch how many students come out of that school as clever as I did."

"I seriously doubt that." Harry replied with a grin.

"Oh really?" She said, not amused with his sarcasm.

"Really." He nodded, "I assure you, Professor Granger, that you are *one* of a kind."

"You know, Harry, *you* should consider teaching." She blushed.

"And why is that?" He smirked, pleased that he was now the one having an effect on *her*.

"Because you've mastered the art of smooth talking." She winked.

He let out a hearty laugh as he handed the book back to her. "I'll let you get going then. I've got to get ready for Dublin..."

"Wait just a minute." She said as she reached in her bag to pull out a quill. "I was going to send this as part of your birthday gift, but since you're here now."

Taking the book from his hands, she opened the front cover and took a minute to sign it before handing it back.

"Autographed, first edition." He grinned widely. "Imagine all the Silver Knuts I could get if I took this to Flourish and Blotts...Kidding! Just kidding!"

Slapping him gently on the arm, she flashed him a warning grin and then put her quill back in her bag.

"It was good to see you, Harry." She smiled, as she embraced him. "Take care."

"You, too, Hermione." He replied as he wrapped his arms around her waist and returned the hug.

After several moments, she pulled away and ran her hand through his hair, and with a smile, placed a soft kiss on his cheek and disapparated.

It took him a minute to get his bearings, as she once again had the effect on *him*, but when he did he quickly opened the book and read the words she'd written just a few moments ago.

"To Friendship and Bravery-

I know we made a promise to stay away from each other for five years, but serendipitously "bumping" into you made my day. Good luck on your journey and rest assured that true love *will* conquer all.

6. Great Loss, Great Love...

Author’s Note: I am sorry this chapter took so long, I have been extremely busy with work and school. I hope you will enjoy it even though there isn’t any H&Hr. I promise they are coming in the next chapter which will be out later tonight or hopefully tomorrow. Enjoy!

Chapter 6: Great Loss, Great Love...

"27.....29......31 Shamrock Road, this is it!" Harry exclaimed proudly as he made his way through the gate and up the cobble stone path to the front door.

The home of Athena Helios was small, but very beautiful. It was surrounded by a picket fence, and a garden of exquisite blossoming flowers. It looked like a small cottage straight from a fairy tale, and if Harry had has way, a cottage wouldn't be the only thing that Athena and Remus had in common with fairy tales.

"Well, I know you didn't come all the way to Ireland to stop and smell the roses, did ya Harry? I haven't been there in awhile, but I am almost certain there are some around Godric's Hollow. Not as pretty as ours, but a rose is a rose, is it not?" A petite, elderly woman said with a bright smile as she opened the front door and stepped outside.

Harry was startled by her presence, and more shocked by the fact that she had known his name and where he was from.

"How did you know?" He asked curiously.

"Desmond Helios....world renowned Soothsayer." She teased as she walked closer to where he was standing. "I don't know if you know this, Potter, but I think the only person who was is in the Daily Prophet more than you was that stupid git Gilderoy Lockhart before his little accident. The whole wizarding world knows what the Boy Who Lived looks like."

"Of course," Harry nodded, "I'm not one for the glory that comes along that title."

"Well, you should be. Not enough legendary wizards in your generation if you ask me. You're a great example to us all. You're hope for a future free of dark magic and destruction."

"Thank you." He smiled shyly.

"No need to thank me, boy." She replied as she made her way back toward the house. "Well, I know you didn't come here for a flower show, so I guess you'll be wanting to see Athena then? She's not home just yet, but I am expecting her shortly.."

"How did you-"

"World renowned Soothsayer, but shhh, it's a secret." She repeated with a wink as she opened the front door and motioned for him to come inside.

*******************************************

"You've got your Mother's eyes." Desmond smiled as she poured Harry and herself a cup of hot tea. "Green as the sea and just as deep. Very honest and compassionate. The rest of you is all James."

Harry grinned. He loved hearing about his parents, and he loved it even more when people told him that he was like them, whether it his traits or appearance. It wasn't easy being without them since he was a year old, but to have them live on in the memories of old friends and acquaintances was always nice.

"Did you know them well?" He asked as he looked down to find a friendly Calico Cat purring at his feet.

"Yes, they spent many summer days and nights here with Remus and Athena." She nodded, as she watched her precious cat hop onto Harry's lap and rub her face against his hand. "Ashling was very found of James, too. Remus got him for Athena at the beginning of seventh year. She was around for many of their antics."

"So they were mischievous away from Hogwarts as well?" Harry said with a laugh, knowing that he and his Father had shared the same passion for adventure and rule breaking.

"Are you kidding? I can't tell you how many cranky ol' witches and wizards almost burst down my door because those kids had gotten into some sort of trouble. They used to make me so angry, but not for long. Once I saw the guilty looks on their faces, I had to forgive them. I was a softee. All of them had good hearts, just like you do."

"Are you really a soothsayer?" Harry questioned, in awe of her certainity of his character.

"I was a Divination Professor many years ago, just like Professor Trelawney." She said rolling her eyes at the mention of Trelawney's name. "The only difference between me and that incompetent git is that she's been right only twice and I've been wrong....only twice."

Harry felt a chill run through his body. Divination was not his favorite subject, on the contrary, it was most definitely his least favorite. Professor Trelawney had spent most of the time telling him he was doomed and the rest of the time predicting things that Filch the Squib could have foreseen. He'd always believed her to be a fraud, except for the one time when another being seemed to momentarily posess her long enough to accurately predict the resurrection of Lord Voldemort. He had heard from Dumbledore that she'd been right on another occasion, but never knew what that prediction was. Desmond Helios seemed much different than Cybil Trelawney. She didn't seem as eager to make such horrific traditions, but rather had a unique ability to see a person through what they truly were. Harry remembered reading once that the eyes were the window to the soul. He got the distinct feeling that Desmond's divination capabilities were very similar to that quote.

"You don't see things the way she does...do you?" Harry asked nervously as he swallowed a large lump in his throat and proceeded to take a sip of his tea.

"You mean do I see a large Hungarian Horntail making a pot roast out of you next week?" She said with a wink. "No, my visions aren't as grave and disconserting as hers, but I do see things that aren't pleasant, I won't deny that."

Harry watched as her expression faded from bright and smiling to cold and somber. There was something about her that wasn't there with Trelawney. There was more of a genuine quality, which is why he was certain that whatever it was that wasn't pleasant in his future would surely come true.

"Wha- What do you see?" He asked in a slightly trembling voice.

"I see good, and I see bad..." She sighed, as she reached over and took his tea cup, surveying the leaves carefully as she continued to speak. "You've experienced many great losses at such a young age, Harry. I am sad to say that you will have one more to endure."

Harry was stunned as he felt his heart jump up into his throat and his mind began to race a mile a minute. No, this can't be true. Not again, not someone he loved. Who? Who else could he losed? Hadn't he suffered enough? Would it be Sirius? Hagrid? Ron? Or heaven forbid, his beloved Hermione? The room was spinning as a feeling of nausea ran through his body. He couldn't believe the words he was hearing, but a small part of him knew it was inevitable.

"Harry..." Desmond's soothing and concerned voice called out, causing Harry to come back from his worrisome thoughts. "Harry, I am so sorry, I didn't want to upset you, but I believe it is best to know the truth, and that isn't all that I see for you. May I continue? I think you will like the second part much more..."

"Please do." He smiled slightly, eager to hear something a little more encouraging.

"Great loss will be followed by an even greater love....the kind that will last forever." She grinned widely, putting down the tea cup and calling for Ashling to come to her.

"Great love?" He repeated in a puzzled tone, his thoughts instantly on Hermione. "Do you know who with?"

"I'm sorry, no." She said shaking her head. "I only see parts of the events, not everything. I wish I could see more. I might have been able to prevent a lot of tragedies in my time..."

"I'm sure your predictions have done a lot of good." He replied with a bright smile.

"Quite the charmer, too." Desmond grinned, "You do more than look like your father, Harry."

"Mum, are you home?"

A voice called from the hall, followed by the slamming of the door. Harry watched as a slender and petite woman entered the room. Athena Helios and her Mother looked almost nothing alike. Desmond had wavy red hair pulled back in a tight bun, and her skin was as white as milk. Athena on the other hand, had straight and sleek raven locks that fell to the middle of her back, and an olive complection. The only two things that the women had in common were their pale blue eyes and that they were both extremely pretty, but in very different ways.

"Oh, I didn't know we had company." Athena smiled warmly, extending her hand to Harry.

"'Lo." He replied with a grin as he shook her hand.

"Athena!" Desmond exclaimed, "Don't you recognize this young man?"

"Should I?" She asked curiously, eyeing Harry carefully as he watched the shocked look overcome her face when she made the realization of who he was. "Oh my goodness, you're Lily and James' son! You're Harry Potter!"

"Yes." He nodded as he felt her fling his arms around his neck and begin to sob in his embrace.

"You look just like him. I don't know how I didn't see it immediately!" She wept, pulling back from his embrace and wiping the stray tears from his eyes. "I'm sorry, I just I didn't expect this! What are you doing here?"

"I'm on a mission." He said with a wide grin. "You see a long time ago two celestial beings lost each other. You can think of me as the star sent to guide them back to where they belong."

*************************************************

"What on earth are we doing here?" Remus protested as Sirius lead him up a long dirt trail to the top of a hill overlooking the sunset upon Godric's Hollow. "You know I can't bear to come here, it makes me think of..."

But he couldn't finish. Standing a few feet in front of him stood Harry, a smile of satisfaction painted across his face, and a little further on was Athena, joyful tears pouring down her cheeks as she looked at him with her bright blue eyes that were filled with hope for the first time in years.

"Is this a dream?" Remus asked in disbelief as he felt his heart start to pound inside his chest. "This can't be real."

"If you're dreaming, then so am I." Her quivering voice called as she walked closer to him and reached her hand to touch his face. "And if we're both dreaming, I don't ever want to wake up."

Remus laughed as he ran his trembling fingers through her hair, and looked her over thoroughly, still unable to believe that she was actually back in his arms.

"I missed you, Sunshin-"

But he couldn't finish. She silenced his words with a passionate kiss that was more than twenty years overdue.

"That would be our cue to leave." Sirius whispered and Harry nodded his head in agreement.

And with a pop, they were gone, and all that remained was the Remus, Athena, and the dusk. The perfect time of day to symbolize the reunion of sun and moon.

7. Gift of the Animagi

Chapter 7- Gift of the Animagi

Several weeks had passed since Harry had succeeded in reuniting Remus and Athena, and never in his life had he seen a couple look happier. After a second visit to Dublin with the new couple, Sirius, and Rosmerta, Desmond informed him that the type of all consuming love and devotion shared between Athena and Remus was reminiscent of the love shared between Harry's parents. Hearing this made the young Potter ecstatic. It gave him comfort in knowing that even though their time on this earth was short, they had found each other and a love that lasted beyond the realm of this world.

Harry's birthday finally arrived and he'd received an owl from Hermione saying how much she missed him and wished she could be with him. As a gift, she sent him a scrapbook from their years at Hogwarts, complete with every article ever written about him in the Daily Prophet, and many photos of him, her, Ron, and the rest of their friends. He found himself getting lost in it for well over an hour. Reminiscing on the simpler times when they were a trio and romantic feelings had not complicated things. He found himself missing her more each day, and life became increasingly difficult without her around as he watched how happy Remus and Athena were, not to mention Rosmerta and Sirius. Five years was seeming more and more like an eternity as each day passed with the speed of a tortoise crossing the Sahara.

Ron had also written to Harry expressing his regret that do to his current practice schedule, he would not be able to see his friend on his birthday. He wished him all the best and was sure to inform him that he was already on a winning streak of 124 consecutive saves for his Quidditch Team. He also expressed hope that Harry would come to his next game and watch him go for the record, enclosing a ticket to the match against Puddlemere United and the latest edition of "From Bludger to Snitch: The Ultimate Quidditch Guide". Nothing would have pleased Harry more then to cheer his friend on, but unfortunately the match was scheduled for the day his auror training was to begin. Extremely disappointed, he wrote back to Ron informing him that he would not be able to make it, but would certainly be rooting for him from afar.

**************************************

"Good morning, birthday boy!" An extremely happy Remus exclaimed as he and Sirius walked towards him as he descended the stairs.

"'Mornin' to you two as well," He said with a forced smile, not feeling much like celebrating after having to spend his eighteenth birthday away from his best friend and the girl he loved most.

"Why so glum, Potter? It's your birthday, you received presents from your friends, you have us here to celebrate with, not to mention Athena and Rosmerta. What could be better than that?" Remus asked with a wide grin that had been plastered on his face ever since Athena had come back into his life.

"Snogging Hermione." Sirius teased as he put his arm around Harry's shoulders and led him to the living the room.

"That's not funny. At least you and Moony over here don't have to be separated from the women you love!" Harry said in a disgusted tone.

"Don't even go there, Harry." Remus replied shaking his head. "Five years is *nothing*, when you get to twenty plus, *then* you can talk to me about separation."

"I see having Athena back in your life has also given you a witty sense of humor." Harry mumbled coldly.

"I know! It's about time that boy loosened up! I am so glad to have the old, joking Remus back. Now, if we can just get rid of the wand that's stuck up your as-"

"Ask him if he is ready for his gift." Rosmerta interrupted as she entered the room with Athena close behind and shot Sirius a warning glance.

"Sorry." He muttered with a wink to Remus. "Ready for your gift then, Harry?"

"I guess." He replied unenthusiastically.

"Smile lad, this is something that is going to come in handy for auror training, not to mention for your lady problems.

"What do you mean?" He asked curiously as he moved forward in his seat.

"Thought that might get your attention." Sirius chuckled as he walked over to the coffee table and pulled out a long, narrow box wrapped in red paper with a gold bow.

"Harry Potter, it is with great honor and pride that I, Mr. Padfoot, as well as Mr. Moony, and in the spirit of Mr. Prongs present to you the Gift of the Animagi."

Confused, Harry took the package from Sirius and proceeded to open it. Inside he found a picture frame, and the drawing of a large, snowy owl with piercing green eyes perched on a branch. On the top of the frame was the inscription, "Moony, Padfoot, Prongs", and on the bottom was the name "Apollo".

"What is this?" He asked puzzled by the gift.

"This is your new identity, Harry." Remus began to explain. "You see, you made a promise to your dear Hermione that you would stay away from her for five years time, however, Mr. Apollo here did not."

A large grin slowly spread across Harry's face as he realized exactly what their intentions were.

"I do have a letter I need to send to Hermione..."

"And you can do it yourself with three little words and a whole lot of concentration: Owlus Animagus Totalus."

Too excited to wait any longer Harry jumped up from his seat and bounded for the stairs, turning back and motioning for Remus and Sirius to follow.

"Let's go."

********************************************

"Hermione, are you home?" Lavender Brown's voice called out through their small flat on the outskirts of Hogsmeade.

"In here." She answered from the living room, curled up by the fire with a photo album in hand.

"Hey, we missed you down at The Leaky Cauldron. Ginny, Neville and Dean were asking for you."

"Didn't feel much like going out today." She replied as she tried to inconspicuously wipe a few stray tears from her eyes.

"So which one is it now, Harry or Ron?" She asked, rolling her eyes and laughing.

"Potter." She answered with a slight smile. "It's his birthday....I just wish I was with him."

"Girl, you've got it bad." Lavender chuckled, "Not only for one of the most eligible bachelor's in the Wizarding World, but two."

"I know, selfish, isn't it? I can't help myself." She said sadly, "I love them both in different ways."

"It's not selfish, Hermione. I know you'd do anything to avoid hurting either one. They both adore you, how could you not be conflicted when two incredible men are enamored with you? Especially when you spent seven years as their best friend."

"I know, I just wish it wasn't so complicated." she sighed, flipping the photo album to a picture of the three of them after Gryffindor had won the Quidditch Cup during Seventh Year.

"Yeah." Lavender nodded as she looked over at the photo Hermione was surveying. "Ya know, I never understood how you and Ron ever got together. Your personalities just clashed."

"That was part of the fun." Hermione laughed, "If there is one thing Ron and I both enjoyed, it was a challenge."

"What about Harry?" Lavender asked curiously, "You and he got along very well. What attracted you to him?"

"He's a different kind of challenge." Hermione began to explain, looking down at the photo and lovingly running her fingers over Harry's scar. "The Boy Who Lived. Harry had a way of distancing himself and not being able to open up. It used to frustrate me so much when he'd pull away and not confide in me. He insisted on being a loner, but I was equally persistent on being let in. It was my intention to remain friends with him, but that night before graduation, I couldn't help myself. I saw the vulnerability and raw emotion in his eyes. I saw how much he needed me and to my surprise, I found myself needing him as well."

Lavender was taken aback by Hermione's outpouring of the truth. She now realized just how difficult her situation had been, and why her love for both of these men was tearing her apart.

"If you could go back and change any of it, would you?"

"I don't regret what happened that night between me and Harry, but I do regret that all three of us had to be hurt." She answered as she bit down on her trembling lip. "I believe everything happens for a reason, so no I wouldn't change a thing. Everyone has to fall once in awhile, but rising afterwards is what makes us stronger."

"Spoken like the clever little witch you are." Lavender smiled, as she patted Hermione's hand and then got up from her seat. "I'm going to bed, you should try and get some sleep yourself. Everything will turn out okay."

"Thanks, I'm going to go in a few minutes."

She replied as she took one last look at the photo and then closed the album, wiping a few more tears from her eyes as Lavender headed to her room, muttering a silent cheering charm for her troubled friend.

Hermione stared at the fireplace, her thoughts jumping from Harry to Ron and back again. This decision was more painful then she'd expected, but she hoped in the end it would turn out to be the right one. Deciding to take Lavender's advice and head for bed, she started her way towards her room when a light tapping at the window brought her back.

"Who on earth could that be at this hour?" She wondered aloud as she walked over to the window and found a snowy white owl outside it.

"Hedwig!" She exclaimed with a smile as she let him in and happily took the letter from him. Desperate for Harry's words, she tore into the envelope and pulled out the parchment that was inside.

"Dearest Hermione,

Thank you so much for the wonderful photo album. If I can't have you here with me, it's nice to be able to stroll down memory lane. It is no comparison to the real thing, but it still helps to think about all the happy times we have shared, and I hope that there will be many more like them in our future. It's not easy turning eighteen without your best friends there with you, but I know that even though you and Ron aren't here in the flesh, you are never far away in spirit, and of course in my heart.

I hope that everything is going well with you as you prepare for teaching at Hogwarts. Auror Training starts soon, and I hope it will help keep to keep me distracted. Anything to get these next five years moving faster.

I have to go now, Sirius and Remus are calling. Speaking of Remus, I almost forgot to tell you that he and Athena are back together. Reuniting them has to be one of my greatest achievements. Everyday I watch their love grow and hear people say how much they are like my parents. It gives me hope that things will work out in the end, and that great love will prevail.

Send my best to your family and Lavender. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Love Always,

Harry

P.S. Your book was indeed "alluring", but then again, I never expected otherwise.

Hermione smiled through her sobs as she read and reread the letter. She missed him so much lately, and hearing from him had been the best thing to happen to hear since their run in at the library. The news that bringing Athena back to Remus had been so successful had not only renewed Harry's faith, but hers as well. Whatever happened at the end of five years, only time would tell. One thing she knew for certain was that Harry was on to something: nothing can ever stand in the way of great love, no matter which way the cards should fall.

Turning towards Hedwig as she wiped her tear stained face, she noticed something about the owl that she hadn't before.

"Did you always have green eyes?" She asked in a puzzled tone. "Listen to me, talking to owls! I'm sleep deprived! Better go to bed before they start to answer back. Stay the night, Hedwig. I'm sure I will have a letter for you to send back to Harry in the morning."

Glancing once again at the snowy owl, she could have sworn that he winked at her. Certain that she was indeed lacking sleep, she finally headed to bed as Apollo made his way over to the chair by the fire, taking pleasure in spending the night wrapped up in the scent of the woman he loved more than life itself.

8. Auror Extraordinaire

Chapter 8- Auror Extraordinaire

Author’s note: Be patient, more H&Hr is on the way and I promise Hermione will keep her word in regards to the Quidditch match mentioned in this chapter :) Enjoy!

Dedication: This is for J, Happy Birthday! :)

After spending a glorious night wrapped up in Hermione's fireside chair, Apollo left the flat bright and early the next morning with a brand new letter in tow. Harry rushed back home and flew straight through his bedroom window before transfiguring back into himself and then proceed to read the letter he'd just received from Hermione.

Dearest Harry,

It was so good to hear back from you. I am extremely pleased about Remus and Athena. It is so nice to know that happily ever after doesn't only exist in fairy tales. Be sure to send them my best, as well as to Sirius and Rosmerta.

I know that Ron has told you that he is expected to break the Quidditch Keeper record or something at a game tonight. He's also told me that you won't be able to go, but asked if I'd attend. He said we don't have to speak or anything, but thought it would be nice if I could cheer him on from the stands. Since we've already had two "chance" meetings, I thought it'd only be fair if I went to see him play, especially since you won't be there.

"Two chance meetings?" He said aloud, "What does she mean two?"

I hope that you had a fabulous birthday and that you will write back soon. Good luck with Auror Training, although I am sure you won't need it.

All my love,

Hermione

P.S. Nice try with the owl- I'd recognize those green eyes anywhere.

**************************************

"There he is now," Mad Eye Moody's rough and boisterous voice called out to Harry as he walked through the fourth floor corridor of the Ministry of Magic. "Auror Extraordinaire, Harry Potter!"

"'Lo, Sir!" Harry said as he shook Moody's shaking hand.

Ever since Harry's fourth year, Mad Eye had acted even more "mad" than usual. He was scheduled to become Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, but was kidnapped and impersonated by Barty Crouch, a loyal servant to Lord Voldemort who hatched the plan to bring the Dark Lord back to power. The real Mad Eye was held captive in his own trunk for nine months. Even though he'd devoted his entire life before that ordeal to ridding the world of Death Eaters, he became even more obsessed after he was held hostage and Voldemort was revived. There were only two people he truly trusted. One was Dumbledore, and the other way Harry. However, Harry got the feeling that the only reason that he was trusted was because he was had Dumbledore's word backing him.

"I've been waiting years for this, Potter." Moody replied as a crazed look appeared over his face, and his magic eye roamed around rapidly. "Dumbledore says you're going to be the best thing to ever happen to the work of aurors. I have my doubts, but I know Albus has faith in you. Hell, that scar of yours is legendary, bought time you lived up to it."

"I intend to, Sir." Harry answered with complete confidence in his abilities.

"Good," Moody nodded, "I guess you're ready to start then?"

A wide grin spread across Harry's face.

"I was born ready."

*******************************

Auror training was a lot more grueling than Harry had anticipated. The morning started out with written tests that consisted of scenarios that one might face when battling dark forces. This had been the easiest part for Harry, taking avout an hour to complete. Hemanaged to score well above average, impressing both Mad Eye Moody, and the Director of Intellegence in the Auror training program, Conan Cassidy.

His next session was an obstacle course lined with Dementors and other dark creatures. Harry's goal was to successfully disarm and apprehend them in the shortest amount of time possible without being attacked first. While he sustained a few scrapes and bruises, he still received high marks for finishing at just under seventeen and a half minutes, nearly tying Moody's fifty year old record.

The third and final challenge for the morning was a simulated battle against Lord Voldemort. With the Virtualus Realm spell, the young Wizard was transported to a dark and deserted hilltop where the Dark Lord waited a few feet in front of him, armed and ready to attack. Moody had warned Harry not to be an overachiever, there wasn't one Auror, including himself, who'd ever been able to defeat the simulation. After nearly two hours of spell dueling, which included three near misses of the Cruciatus Curse, a block of the Imperious, and one close encounter with Avada Kedavra, Harry sucessfully destroyed Voldemort.

"Bloody Hell, Potter!" Mad Eye Moody exclaimed in a rather shocked tone as Harry came back from the influence of the Virtualus spell, "No one's ever lasted so long with that no good bastard, let alone been able to kill him! I might just have to pay up on that ten galleon bet I placed against you with Dumbledore."

Harry smiled in between heavy breaths as he wiped the sweat from his brow and tucked his wand back into his robes.

"Thank you, Sir," He answered in a quiet and tired tone, "I'm only sorry it wasn't the real thing."

"Aren't we all." He replied as he handed Harry a glass of water and then pulled his flask from his hip to take a drink of his own. "I think you've had enough training for one day, Potter. Why don't you head down to the cafeteria for a bite to eat and then meet me back in my office when you finish. There's some paperwork I need you to fill out and then you can be on your way."

Harry nodded, extremely famished from a morning of intense training, he headed for lunch, completely unaware of the things he would learn about the current problem plaguing the Ministry of Magic.

**************************

The lunchroom of the Ministry was filled with chatting Witches and Wizards of all shapes and sizes. It reminded him of the feasts at Hogwarts and made him sad that those glorious days would be no more.

"Oh my goodness, it's true then!" A squeaky, high pitched voice called out to Harry. "The Boy Who Lived is here! It's Potter!"

"Bloody hell," he thought to himself as a large group of screaming witches surrounded him. They were like vulchers, begging for his autograph and pulling at his robes. Harry hated all the attention that came with his name, especially this sort if reaction.

"Ladies, control yourselves!" A man's voice called through the crowd, "Mr. Potter is busy defending us from the dark forces, he doesn't have time for all of this nonsense! Honestly, where are your manners!"

Harry looked up to find a tall, dark young man making his way through the masses of adoring witches. He had black hair, slicked backed in a way that reminded him of Draco Malfoy, his archnemesis from Hogwarts, and a toothy grin that made him think of Gilderoy Lockhart, his conceited pretty boy Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher from second year.

"Tomas R. Zamba, Mr. Potter." He said as he surveyed the crowd of onlooking witches and flashed them a wink. "Co-Director of Muggle Information, originally from Majorca. Graduated from Escuela de la Magia. You can call me Tom."

"Nice to meet you." Harry answered as he extended his hand, "I'm an Auror in training, graduated from Hogwa-"

"Fascinating." Tomas said with an unamused expression, ignoring Harry's gesture to shake hands. "Anyway, why don't you let me take these pestering ladies out of your way? I know after this morning the last thing you need is a group of squealing fans interrupting your lunch, but I'd be happy to entertain them for you. Adios!"

And with that, Tomas Zamba and his newly acquired legion of fans made their way over to a lunch table as Harry watched in amazement at how quickly he'd gone from the Boy Who Lived to the Who that what?

"I see you've met, Mr. Charisma." A bitter tone scoffed from behind him.

"You mean Zamba?" Harry said with a laugh as he turned to find a burly, auburned haired man standing next to him, "I didn't know Playboy was in the job description for Co-Director of Muggle Information."

"Neither did I, but keep in mind that he was hired by a female."

"That explains a lot then." He laughed, "I'm Harry, by the way, Harry-"

"Potter, yea I know. We all know. I think it's why Tom's so threatened. I'm Edgar Duncan Motlive, the other Co-Director of Muggle Information, but please, call me Ed."

"Pleased to meet you, Ed, and my sincere condolences for having to work with Mr. Witch Weekly."

***********************************

"So, how long have been working here?" Harry asked as he sipped his pumpkin juice and took a bite of corned beef sandwich.

"About two years now. I like it a lot, studying muggles is very interesting, just wish I didn't have to do it with that incompetent git." Ed replied as he helped himself to a spoonful of treacle fudge.

"Do you have a lot of work?"

"When I first started things were slow, but it's picked up in the last few months, ya know, with all the *chatter*."

"Chatter?" Harry asked.

"You-know-who and his followers." Ed whispered as he leaned in closer to Harry, making sure that no one around was eavesdropping. "Rumor has it his biding his time for a big comeback, and they think he's got a deatheater embedded in this place to supply him with knowledge."

Harry felt a shiver run through his body as Ed spoke.

"But what about Moody? Can't he spot the Death Eaters a mile away?"

"Mad Eye ain't what he used to be," Ed replied with a sigh, "I think that's why they are stepping up the process with you, Potter."

"Yes, but don't they have any idea at all as to who it might be?"

"Oh they have someone in mind all right, but I think they've got it all wrong."

"Who are they thinking of?" Harry asked curiously.

"Mark Ciaran," Ed replied, once again speaking in a soft tone to avoid attention. "He works in the Muggle History department. He's quiet and shy, I heard them say he reminds them of Quirrell. Real shy and anxious, an easy target for Voldemort to prey on. I don't know him well, but he seems harmless and to be honest with you, I don't think he has the brains."

"Who do you think it is then?"

"Me? I'd bet a thousand galleons on our old pal, Tom Zamba."

"Are you kidding?" Harry said in disbelief. "You think this Ciaran character is too stupid to be the informant but you believe that dimwitted pretty boy is the culprit?"

"Go ahead and laugh, but looks are deceiving, Potter." Ed replied in a somber tone. "It's what's in a name that tells you everything."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean," Ed answered as he once again moved in close to Harry. "People can't even say you-know-who's name, but do you know of anyone that cringes at the sound of Tom Riddle?"

"I don't understand." Harry responded in a very confused tone. "What does Tom Riddle have to do with Tom Zo-"

And then, like a ton of bricks, it hit him.

"Not just Tom Zomba." Ed reminded Harry as he watched the realization slowly creep over his face, "Tom *R.* Zomba."

9. Checkmate

Chapter 9- Checkmate

Author’s note: Please forgive me for taking so long to update. I was very busy with school and work. Now that I am finished for the summer, I hope to update more frequently. This is a filler chapter, but I promise things are REALLY going to start speeding up with the next one. I hope you like what I have planned. Enjoy!

After Harry's first day of auror training, the months began flying by. He was so busy with his work, that it left little time for him to dwell on anything else and before he knew it, three years, three-hundred-twenty-seven days, eight hours, and seventeen minutes remained in his pact with Hermione.

He hadn't completely forgotten about her, on the contrary. She still managed to creep into his dreams, causing him to wake up sweating and smiling in the morning. She also wrote to him often, and he kept each and every letter safely tucked away under his bed, reading them frequently. He spent many hours lost in the memories stored within his pensieve, desperate for anything that could remind him of what he was missing not only with Hermione, but with Ron as well. The young and talented Mr. Weasley had been keeping busy himself. After breaking the record for consecutive saves by a Keeper, he became the most coveted Quidditch player in Europe, and six months ago he had achieved his dream of becoming a member of the Chudley Cannons. Not only was his athleticism widely publicized, but he also managed to knock Harry to the number two spot on Witch Weekly's Most Enchanting Young Wizard list. Not that he minded at all, Harry enjoyed spending time out of the spotlight, especially when Ron was in it. He was also grateful that he had made it to the game to see Ron break the record, even if he had missed Hermione, he at least got to celebrate a joyous occasion with one of the people he cared for the most.

Harry also spent a lot of time watching Remus and Athena. He was so amazed by the two of them, that sometimes he couldn't help but stare. He had never seen so people so completely in love that it was impossible to believe they'd endured a twenty-some year separation. He noticed the look in Remus' eyes when he was gazing at Athena. There was a gleam there now, something more than when he looked at anyone else. It was one of the most incredible things Harry had ever seen, and he often wondered if that spark came alive in him when he was looking at Hermione. Only time would tell if their love was strong enough to withstand so many years apart. Part of him was certain, but another wasn't so confident.

"Daydreaming again, Potter?" Remus' jovially voice called through the doorway of Harry's bedroom as the young wizard looked up from his pensieve and smiled.

"Sometimes the dream is better than the reality." He replied as he stretched his arms and then put the pensieve away.

"Just wait til you get the girl, you'll never want to close your eyes again." Remus said with a grin as he entered the room and shut the door behind him. "Do you have a few minutes? I need to ask you something."

"Sure." Harry nodded, "Everything all right?"

"Everything is perfect." Remus assured him, "I' just discussed something with Sirius and he and I have a plan in the works, but in order for us to be successful, we're going to need two things from you."

"Anything." Harry replied

"One, you're going to have to break your pact with Hermione for one night. This will count as an insinuating circumstance, and we will need Ron here, too."

"Okay.." Harry answered, extremely clueless as to where Remus was heading, "what's the second thing?"

"Will you be the best man for our double wedding?"

"Are you serious?" Harry asked as a huge grin spread across his face. "I would be honored! When is it? Why didn't you two tell me before? What do you need me to do?"

"It's on Valentine's Day, we didn't tell anyone and all you have to do is show up and look pretty. Think you can handle that, Potter?"

"It's what I do best," He said with a wink. "I am so happy for you Remus. You and Athena deserve all the best, so do Sirius and Rosmerta, but you two have just- well, you know what I mean."

"Believe me, Harry," Remus said as he placed a comforting hand on Harry's shoulder, "if things are meant to be with you and Hermione, it will be *well* worth the wait."

**********************************

Dear Harry,

It's great to hear the news about Remus and Athena and Sirius and Rosmerta. I've already told the coach I'll be needing that day off, rest of the family should be coming, too It'll be great to see you again, and Hermione. Take care and write back soon. I want to hear more about Auror Training.

Ron

P.S. We beat the Haileyburg Hammers in Toronto last night, but I got a broken nose. You should see the teasing I got from Fred and George (who say Hi, as does the rest of my dysfunctional family). Hope you can make it to another game soon, let me know when you can come and I'll send you some tickets. (good ones at that)

Harry laughed as he pictured Ron with a broken nose and Fred and George cracking jokes about it. He missed being able to spend weekends with the Weasley family, getting into all kinds of mischief and staying up late in fits of laughter. It would be good to see Ron and the gang again.

Harry had sent off letters with Hedwig as soon as Remus had told him the good news. Ron and Hermione both responded right away and Harry was ecstatic to hear that both were coming, but especially happy that he’d heard from Hermione.

Dear Harry,

A double wedding! How incredibly romantic! I would not miss this for the world! It will be great to see Sirius, Rosmerta and Remus again, and I cannot wait to meet Athena! Both couples deserve so much happiness, and I am so excited to see you as best man. They couldn't have picked a better wizard for the job. It will be wonderful to have the trio together again.. Valentine's Day can't get here fast enough!

Send my love to everyone and let them know I will be attending! Please owl back soon, I miss hearing from you.

All my love,

Hermione

P.S. I think Hedwig deserves a break, don't you? Perhaps you could send a letter with Appollo?

Harry grinned at her last line. It was nice to know that Hermione was missing him, too. As grim as their separation had been, things were starting to look up. The Double Wizard Wedding was without a doubt going to be the event of the year.

************************************

“This wedding sounds great.” Ed said as he instructed his Knight to capture Harry’s Castle. “It’s also wonderful that you will see your friends.”

“Yep.” Harry said with a smile as he told his Queen to move diagonally. “I’m looking forward to it. You should come if you want, they’d all love to meet you. I’ve told them what a good friend you’ve been. I’ll even introduce you to Dumbledore.”

“Dumbledore, I don’t know if I could meet him,” Ed replied in a nervous tone as his Bishop took Harry’s pawn and moved just one square away from his King. “Check.”

“Why not? He’s the most fantastic wizard of the age. Voldemort himself fears him. I thought you would enjoy meeting him.”

“Just nervous I guess.” He answered with an awkward grin, as Harry had his King from harms way. “He’s such a strong and powerful presence in the wizarding world, I think I’d be a bit overwhelmed.”

“He’s just like you and me, a good guy out to get the bad guys.” Harry assured him as Ed moved his Bishop back to take one of Harry’s pawns.

“Perhaps he should come here and rid us of Zomba then. Albus Dumbledore should be able to sniff that rat out with no problem.” Ed sneered.

“You still don’t trust him, do you?” Harry asked, as he eyed Ed suspiciously.

“Nope, and I never will. Something’s going on in this Ministry, and I’m the only one who seems to care.”

“We all care, Ed. I had Moody check out Zomba months ago and he said he was okay. I think it’s just his attitude that you don’t like.” Harry answered as he took one of Ed’s pawns with his Knight.

“Well, I hope I am wrong.” Ed sighed, as his Queen took Harry’s castle. “I just have a feeling that things are going to go terribly wrong, and Zomba is involved somehow. I told you months ago, it’s all in the name.”

“Yes, I know, but Tom is a common name and a lot of people have the middle initial R. I think it’s just coincidence. You’ve got to relax. If Voldemort did have someone in here, I think we’d know by now. If and when he does strike again, we will be ready. You have to have faith in the Ministry.” Harry replied as he moved Bishop to Ed’s Knight

“I guess.” Ed nodded, as he searched the board for his next move. “I just think that things are going to get out of control very quickly.”

“What makes you say that?” Harry asked, looking up from the game and noticing the far off gaze in Ed’s eyes. His behavior was extremely odd.

“Just a feeling, I mean, it’s how it happened the last time. He came out of nowhere,” Ed replied softly as he moved his Queen to the left of Harry’s King. He had him right where you wanted him.

“When the Dark Lord comes back to power, it’s going to happen fast, so fast we won’t even see it coming. Faster than you can say ‘checkmate’.”

10. To Love Somebody...

Author’s note: I haven’t updated this story in over a year but I had a chance to reread it the other night and thought that it would be ashame not to finish it. I hope you all enjoy this new chapter and I will try to follow up with more soon. I do want to complete this story since I had outlined the entire thing over two years ago and thanks to all of you who have read it.

***New Note*** I updated this chapter to fix the inconsistency with Ron and the Canons. I guess I missed that detail when I went back to browse over previous chapters. Thanks to the readers who pointed that out!

Chapter 10- To Love Somebody...

The weeks leading up to the double wedding flew by. On Valentine’s Day a soft blanket of snow draped the hilltop where the Remus and Athena and Sirius and Rosmerta would recite their vows. The gorgeous white landscape painted a perfect backdrop for the occasion.

The ceremony had gone off without a hitch. Sirius had everyone in stitches with his hilarious yet sweet tribute to his bride, and there wasn’t a dry eye left in the house when Remus read the vows that he had prepared for Athena. Harry was so happy for both couples and only wished that his parents could have been there to see their best friends find such happiness.

Ron had owled earlier in the week to inform Harry that he would be unable to attend the ceremony because he had managed to get a big tournament against Puddlemere United in order to make the conference Championships. Harry had written back to wish his friend luck and let him know that Sirius and Remus also wished him the best and knew better than anyone that you had to follow your heart.

Just about everyone else from their Hogwarts days had shown up for the event. Dumbledore had a fair share of Fire Whiskey and he and Hagrid spent much of the reception dancing quite badly to the sounds of the Weird Sisters. Dobby and his house elf crew insisted on catering and preparing the event and did a fine job with the arrangement and the foods. Professor McGonagle and even Snape arrived to wish the happy couples well. There was just one person missing, and that one person was enough to make Harry feel alone in a room full of people.

Disappointed by Hermione’s abscence, Harry left the reception tent quietly, and took a stroll back to the hilltop where the ceremony had taken place.

“Looking for someone?”

Harry smiled as the voice called out from behind him. He knew exactly who it was before he even turned around.

“Hermione....” he exclaimed in awe as he caught his first glimpse of her.

She was absolutely breathtaking. Her hair was straightened and fell a few inches below her shoulders. She wore a simple, yet stunning black fitted tube dress that ended just above her knee. She was wearing very little makeup, and yet she was the most gorgeous thing he had ever seen. It felt like his heart had stopped beating and then began pounding all in the same moment. There were no words to describe what he was feeling, but he knew he’d never need a pensieve to remember every aspect of it.

“I am speechless...” He said as he swallowed a large lump that had developed in his throat.

“Should I take that as a compliment?” She asked nervously as she ran her hands over the sides of her dress.

“Absolutely.” He grinned devilishly. “I’ve never seen someone look so beautiful.”

“Harry...” Hermione replied as her face became beet red.

“I’d almost given up on you.”

“Sorry I was hiding out in the back during the ceremony.....I was looking out for you and Ron and trying to make our meeting as easy as possible, but I didn’t see him...”

“He couldn’t come, has a big match tonight that could put the Canons in the Championship. He stopped by earlier this morning and told me to send you his best.”

“The Championship!” Hermione exclaimed joyously. “That’s so wonderful for him, I am sure he will do just great!”

“Me too...” Harry smiled as he nervously searched for more words to continue the awkward conversation with,, “I can’t believe how fast this day came.”

“I know, it seems like just yesterday you owled to tell me about the wedding and now the reception is winding down and I haven’t even danced yet.” Hermione winked.

“Are you implying that you would like to dance with me, Miss Granger?”

“It’s the least we could share, Harry.”

“The *very* least,” he said with a grin. “May I have this dance?”

Hermione smile as she wrapped one arm around Harry’s neck and took his hand with the other.

“I’d be honored..” Hermione replied as the two slowly began to sway in rhythm to the echoes of a song playing in the distance at the reception.

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be
Lived with you, lived with you
There's a way
Everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring?
If I ain't got you, ain't got...

“It’s a little unsettling...” Harry whispered as he moved his hand to brush a loose tendril of hair from Hermione’s face.

“What is?” She asked curiously.

“How fitting this song is...”

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

“How did we get to this point, Harry? How did it get so complicated?” Hermione sighed as she rested her head on Harry’s shoulder.

“Puberty?” He quipped as he pulled away to look at her. “It isn’t *my* fault you had to develop into such a beautiful witch.”

“I’m not joking...”

“Neither am I....”

And with that reply, Harry softly caressed Hermione’s cheek as he leaned down and kissed her as tears slowly poured down her angst filled face.

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so very blind

The kiss was tender at first, and then grew with desperation and longing. Hermione had wanted to pull away. She knew because of the pact what they were doing was wrong, but the moment just felt so right. After a few moments of an inner battle between mind and heart, Hermione finally broke away from Harry.

“Please don’t pull away, Hermione.” Harry pleaded as tears began to form in his own eyes, I need you.”

“I can’t..” She wept as she shook her head and turned her back to him, “If we don’t stop now, we are going to regret this later..”

“No!” Harry cried out as he grabbed her shoulder and turned her towards him, placing his hands on either side of her face. “I promise you that if you stay with me tonight, you will *not* regret what happens.”

And once again, he pulled her to his lips and kissed her with a passion she had never felt before.

I'm a man
Can't you see what I am?
I live and breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got you

“Stop it, Harry, please....I am begging you. Don’t make this harder on me..” Hermione sobbed as she pulled away once more.

“Dammit! Why does this have to be hard? Why do we need to wait five bloody years when I know you want this as much as I do. I love you, Hermione, and you love me, I know you do!”

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

“I do love you!” She screamed as tears continued to pour down her anguished face, “I love you more than you could ever know, but if you love me as you say you do, you will give me this time.”

“Why? Why are you torturing me, Hermione?” Harry screamed through his own tears, “Why are you torturing myself! I know you never loved him the way you love me, so why are you delaying the inevitable? What in bloody hell can he give you that I can’t?”

Hermione trembled as she turned to look him in the eye and give her response.

“Stability.”

Oh yeah
You don't know what it's like
Baby you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
To love somebody oh yeah

Harry froze as the pain of her answer sunk in. He watched as she folded her arms across her chest, shivering and crying. She was frightened. Not because she didn’t want him, but because he couldn’t offer her any certainty. His life had been one unending ride of danger and it terrified the woman he loved more than life itself. He knew then that Hermione had not chosen to wait five years because she was torn between him and Ron, but because she was torn between love and security. Harry silently cursed himself for being born as the Boy Who Lived, a title and life that was a double edged sword. He had saved so many, but lost so much. Up until now he had been able to cope with it, but knowing that he could never give Hermione what she needed was almost too much to bear.

“Go Hermione...” He sobbed as wrapped his arms around her waist and placed a tender kiss on her forehead. “I can’t give you what you need right now, but I can give you time.”

“Harry I’m sor-“

“Shhh,” he interrupted her and shook his head, “It’s okay....just go.”

Hermione nodded and placed one last soft kiss upon his lips before turning away and disapparating into the night.

Harry stared at the spot where she had stood just a few moments earlier and continued to cry. She was able to give him everything, but the one thing he couldn’t offer was the one thing that she needed most. Hermione put on a brave front, but she was scared, and he couldn’t bear hurting her with the unpredictability that came with his existence. He was going to find a way to give her what she needed no matter what price he would have to pay.

To love somebody
The way I love you
You don't know, you don't know
To love somebody, to love somebody
You don't know, ooh
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you
