Dancing the Night Away

By Hermione Potter

Chapter 1: Partners

Hermione Granger walked down the moving staircases of Hogwarts with her best friend, Harry Potter.

“Mione?” he asked her. She turned her head to look at him.

“Yeah? What’s wrong?” she replied. He shook his head in response.

“You just seemed out of it,” he smiled at her as a soft blush appeared on her cheeks.

“Oh. I’m sorry. I was just lost in thought. If you could call it that,” Hermione smiled back.

Harry shrugged clueless before they came into the Great Hall and sat down to eat dinner. Then Professor Dumbledore stood up and Professor McGonagall tapped her water goblet. Instantly, the hall quieted down.

“I am pleased to announce that Hogwarts shall be having a dance competition before the Yule Ball. There is a sign-up sheet in front of the Great Hall. The contest is open to students fourth year and up,” Professor Dumbledore announced as his eyes twinkled at Harry.

Harry’s eyes widened when he saw that his mentor was looking at him. Did he expect him to enter? He was as good as dancing as a blast-ended skrewt.

Hermione turned her head back and forth from Professor Dumbledore to Harry. Then Harry turned his head to look at her. They both blushed and looked down, embarrassed.

“You may all continue eating your dinner,” Professor McGonagall said as Professor Dumbledore sat down.

“Do you really think this is a good idea Albus?” she asked.

“Well, Minerva, James and Lily met the same way, did they not? They danced and fell in love. Let’s just wait and see what happens with our own James and Lily,” Albus replied with a sparkle in his eyes as he turned to look at Harry and Hermione.

After dinner, Hermione picked up a list of the dances they were judging. Waltz, freestyle, hip hop, salsa, tango...

Hermione walked into the Common Room and sat down on the couch in front of the fire. ‘Should I enter? But if I did, who would I enter with?’ she thought sadly.

“Hermione! Can I copy your Potions essay?” Ron’s head popped up in front of her. She looked up and huffed.

“Ronald, how many times have I told you to do your own? If you never do anything yourself, you’ll never learn,” Hermione replied, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Well, if I DO this, then I’ll learn,” he sniggered. She smacked him in the back of the head.

“You know what I mean!” Hermione said.

“Better get of her case, Ron. You know she doesn’t like anyone copying her homework,” Harry said from the arm chair across from her.

“Harry? Since when do you agree with her about homework?” Ron asked.

“Since I actually do it. The past six years with her has rubbed off on me,” Harry grinned at her. She blushed hotly, covering her face with the paper.

“Hey, what’s this?” Ron asked, grabbing the pamphlet from her.

“Hey! Give that back!” Hermione screeched, trying to reach him. He was too tall dammit.

“Dances? You’re actually thinking of entering?” Ron said with a disgusted look on his face.

“What is so bad about it? I’m a better dancer than you are! Hmm, maybe I should owl Victor and ask him to enter with me!” she joked.

Harry’s shoulders tensed as he heard this. Strangely, he felt envious.

“You mean Vicky? Uh! Yeah right! Really, you are you going to enter with?” Ron asked.

“I don’t know. One of you. That is, if you can actually dance,” Hermione smiled.

“Hey, I can dance! Watch.” Ron said, pulling her roughly from her seat and bringing her into his arms, swinging around.

“Ron! RON! Stop it! You’re stepping on my feet,” Hermione moaned in pain. She pushed herself away from him and accidently landed in Harry’s lap. She jumped off quickly.

“I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to do that,” she said quickly, embarrassed.

“N-No. It’s fine. Really,” he stuttered back.

Ron looked back between the two and snickered.

“I bet I’m a better dancer than Harry,” Ron grinned.

“Well, we won’t know for sure if I don’t dance for you Ronniekins,” Harry said.

             “Then prove it,” he challenged.

“Fine,” Harry accepted before turning to Hermione and holding out his hand.

“May I have this dance, milady?” he asked politely.

“I’d be delighted,” she bowed before placing her hand in his.

Ron watched as Harry, placed a hand on her waist and began dancing with her.

Hermione found herself drifting away from the room. It was only Harry and her. All her surroundings disappeared as she danced with him. She didn’t know he was such a good dancer. Harry told her he was really bad, but he wasn’t. Their eyes connected somehow as they continued to dance. But a cough interrupted them.

“Umm, the younger ones are watching,” Ron said. Harry and Hermione stopped and turned to see most of the first years looking at them, preferably girls that were swooning over Harry.

They jumped from each other’s arms, blushing.

“I think I have my partner,” Hermione smiled, holding out her hand.

“I think I accept,” Harry chuckled and shook hands with her.

Chapter 2: Flow

After they decided that Harry and Hermione would be entering, they had tried to figure out what dance they’d be doing.

“Honestly, I can’t really decide, can you Harry?” Hermione asked him when they were in the Great Hall. He looked up at her and shrugged slightly. “Like I said, I really don’t know much about dancing. I’ve only danced twice, counting the dance I had with you. ‘Member?” he asked.

“Right. I would ask Ron if he knew what real dancing was,” she glanced at the ginger-haired boy who sat across of them.

“I resent that. I know some form of dancing,” he argued. Harry snorted.

“Yeah, one that ends you on the floor flat on your face. In all truth Ron, you really don’t have a clue about it. I saw the way you stepped on Hermione’s feet. I swear they were swollen by the time you stopped.” he grinned.

“And you say that you don’t know a thing about dancing. Really Harry. You do,” Hermione replied.

“Well, if we have decided I don’t know a thing about dancing and that Harry does, what dance will the two of you be performing?” Ron asked.

“How about something within the mix of a tango, the salsa, and the mamba?” Harry grinned.

“I didn’t know you’d be into Latin dancing. Thought you’d be more into ballroom like at the Yule Ball in 4th year,” Hermione snickered.

“Hey! I hate ballroom dancing. With Latin dances, it’s more natural. What do you say Mione?” he asked her with a tilt of the head.

“I’d like to try it out. Now that we have that settled we can actually sign up and start practicing,” Hermione decided as she stood up and went over to the sign up sheet and signed their names up.

“So when do you actually start practicing?” Harry asked.

“Umm, do you want to have a rehearsal this Saturday. I know it’s a Hogsmeade weekend and everything, but with everyone gone we could concentr-,”Hermione was stopped short.

“Hermione, you can stop rambling on. It’d be fine with me. Really. I don’t mind,” he replied.

“Harry! Skipping Hogsmeade?! But this Saturday is when the new things come into Zonko! You wouldn’t want to miss out on that, would you?” Ron exclaimed.

“Ron, it means a lot to Hermione. And if it means that much to her them I’m willing to skip one weekend at Hogsmeade,” Harry replied. Hermione’s eyes widened in surprise.

“Fine, go on and have your little love bird fest!” Ron said as his face turned pink.

“Well then you can have your little love bird fest with Luna! I saw the way you looked at her yesterday. It was pathetic, you have the same dreamy look she has on her face,” Hermione said, giggling as his ears turned red.

“Sod off Hermione,” he said through gritted teeth.

LATER THAT DAY....

Harry walked to his Divination’s class. ‘What am I going to learn in that class? How to go insane with predictions of death?’ Harry thought.

“Harry! Harry!” a voice yelled behind him.

Harry turned around and his eyes widened as his first crush, Cho Chang was running to catch up to him.

“Hello Cho. How have you been?” Harry asked politely.

“I’ve been great. How about you?” the Asian girl smiled.

“Pretty good. So what brings you here?” he said.

“Well, since there’s a dance competition coming up I was wondering if you’d like to be my partner for it...,” she blushed as his eye brow raised.

“I’m really sorry but I have a partner already so I’m going to have to decline,” Harry apologized.

             “Oh...who is it?” Cho asked.

             “Hermione,” Harry answered.

“Oh. Her,” she said with a disgusted tone in her voice.

“Yes her. What’s wrong with her?” he asked.

“Well, I swear she was trying to come between us in fifth year. Don’t you think so?” she smiled.

             “Umm actually no.” he said.

“Well, I’ll be off then. Bye Harry!” Cho bid farewell and skipped down the hall.

“That was...interesting,” he said to himself. Unnoticed by him, a figure in the shadows scurried away quickly with a sad look on their face.

SATURDAY...

Hermione was waiting in the Common Room for Harry as her mind drifted back to Thursday.

She had seen what had happened between Harry and Cho in the hall talking. And she then saw the girl smile. Obviously something good had happened.

“Hermione?” Harry’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Harry! Don’t scare me like that!” Hermione exclaimed, her hand on her heart.

“Sorry I’m a bit late. I was out practicing some Quidditch,” he smiled.

“Honestly, I don’t know why you people occupy yourselves with such a dangerous sport. You could get killed,” Hermione huffed.

“I know the risks Hermione. But it’s fantastic up there. I should bring you up there sometime,” he replied.

“No way. I will never get up on one of those brooms! I’d fall,” she said.

“Hermione, I wouldn’t let you fall. And if you did, I’d catch you,” Harry said softly as he offered his hand to her.

“Thank you,” she smiled weakly as she took his hand and stood up. With a flick of the wrist, the furniture disappeared and soft Latin music sounded.

“Very nice,” Harry whispered in her ear as he pulled her close to his body and moving slowly.

As the music quickened, so did their movements. But when he looked down at her, her head was bowed.

“Hermione, what’s wrong?” he asked worriedly as they danced on.

“Nothing Harry. What makes you think something’s wrong?” she asked without looking up.

“Because you would look at me,” he replied softly, tilting her chin up.

“What’s wrong” Harry asked softly, their hips swaying softly.

“I saw you talking with Cho the other day. It wouldn’t surprise me if you decided to be partners with Cho,” she whispered quietly.

“Hermione, how could you ever think that? I wouldn’t trade partners for the world. Really, how could you honestly think that? You’re one of my best friends Hermione. And I say that was the most sincerity,” he whispered as he pulled her closer and buried his face in her hair.

“Thanks Harry,” she whispered back, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

A/N: Did ya like that? An early Thanksgiving present to you all! HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! PUMPKIN PIERS! BE HAPPY! WE EAT PUMPKIN PIE IN HONOR OF HARRY AND HERMIONE! Please review. LoL.

Dancing the Night Away

By Hermione Potter

Chapter 3: Welcome America!

Hermione slowly walked into the Great Hall, yawning. She sat down at the Gryffindor table beside Ginny and took a piece of toast, buttering it lightly.

“Good morning, Hermione. How are you doing?” the younger girl asked. Hermione nibbled her toast. “I’m doing as good as can be. What about you?” Hermione questioned.

“Ah, I’m fine too. I’m entering that dance contest. But I don’t know who to enter it with..Maybe Dean or Seamus?” Ginny replied thoughtfully.

Well you’re going to have some competition!” Hermione laughed as Harry and Ron walked in, sitting down across from them.

“What’s so funny?” Ron asked confused. Hermione and Ginny looked at him. “You wouldn’t understand Ronald. This is women’s business. You wouldn’t have any prior knowledge in that category,” Ginny rolled her eyes. Ron shrugged before digging into some eggs and sausage.

“Honestly, Ron. Can’t you eat with your mouth closed. It’s quite disgusting, watching all that stuff just spurt from your mouth. Ugh,” Hermione closed her eyes. “I think I just lost my appetite. Suddenly, Parvati ran over, her face red.

“Did you hear?! Hogwarts is hosting a stay with the Witchcraft and Wizardry Academy in Salem! Can you imagine? America!” she squealed, settling down next to Ginny. Hermione’s eyes widened.

             “But what for?” she asked.

“For the dancing competition I guess,” she shrugged, telling the rest of the Gryffindors about it.

“Why would another school no less than the American witching school want to come to England, for a dancing contest?” the girl asked.

“Maybe they’re just bored of their country and need a new scene,” Ron answered. Harry rolled his eyes and nudged him.

“Eat and don’t talk. Maybe it’s...like fourth year. I mean, maybe other school are coming too. Anyways, I heard about Salem too. But I didn’t hear about the other ones like Durmstrang and Beauxbatons,” he said, staring at Hermione.

“Well, we have a lot of competition coming our way Harry. Think you’re ready for it?” she grinned.

“Definitely. No one is gonna be a match for us. Which reminds me, Hermione, don’t we have a practice tonight?” Harry asked, smiling softly at her as he ate some porridge. She blushed slightly.

“Yeah. In the Room of Requirement,” she assured, feeling Ginny’s eyes dart from Harry to her. Her eyes widened in realization and she squealed.

“Hermione! Oh my gosh!” she gasped, clasping her hands over her mouth. Harry glanced at her strangely.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“Oh, perfectly all right. Just a little warm I guess,” Ginny lied, fanning her face with her hand. He looked at her unconvincingly and looked back at Hermione.

“Well, I’ve got Quidditch practice in a few. See you guys later. Come on Ron, before you choke on a sausage,” he complained, nudging Ron in the arm. The ginger-haired boy motioned for Harry to go on with out him.

“Hermione, you are coming with me, right now.” Ginny demanded, grabbing the girls arm and dragging her out of the hall. Ron glanced at them for a second and turned back to his food, trying to swallow down more.

“Hermione! You like Harry!” Ginny exclaimed, pointing at her. Hermione stared at her, covering her face before it turned red.

“Is it that obvious?” she asked, fearing the whole school might know and then Harry would find out.

“Well, no. But I see the way you two look at each other. It love at first sight. You people just don’t know it,” Ginny laughed.

“You don’t think Harry knows, do you?” Hermione replied.

“Nah. He’s a boy. Usually, boys are very oblivious to the things around them. But later, Harry’s going to find out you like him. How long?”

“Well, I’ve only liked him for a few months. But I think I might have liked him since I met him. I never really noticed is all,” she shrugged at looked at Ginny.

“I know the dancing probably pulled you both closer. It would be really cute. You two dancing to Latin music. The most romantic music in the world! It would be fantastic I bet!” she exclaimed. Hermione smiled softly.

“I guess it would...” she laughed.

“Umm, do you know when the Amreican school will be here?” Hermione asked.

“Well, I heard some teachers saying that they’ll be here tonight by dinner. I hope some of them are really cute,” Ginny grinned.

             “Ginny!” Hermione exclaimed, giggling.

“Well, a girl can hope, can’t she?”

THAT NIGHT....

“Wow, Harry..You’re doing great for someone who hasn’t danced a lot.. You definitely have some talent,” Hermione breathed as they continued to move to the music.

“I have a good teacher,” he chuckled, watching her cheeks burn. Harry smiled and slowed down with the music, having their bodies just sway slowly.

“How was Quidditch practice?” she asked casually. He shrugged slightly, stepping back and then forward.

“As rough as it can be. How was your day in the library?” he teased.

“For your information, I was with Ginny and Luna. So be quiet,” she retorted, pouting.

“Okay, okay. Sorry. Is it time for dinner yet?” he asked.

“Honestly, sometimes I think you’re Ron. You two share the same appetites,” she rolled her eyes and wiped the sweat from her forehead.

“Hey! At least I eat with my mouth closed,” he retaliated.

“Yeah. There is that,” she smiled and stretched before walking out of the room and heading down to the Great Hall.

“Haha, very funny, he said sarcastically as they both walked into the hall and joined their friends.

“Where have you been?” Ron asked nonchalantly.

“If you had listened at breakfast and not stuffing your face, you would have heard that Harry and I were going to practice for the contest,” Hermione sighed, picking at her potatoes.

“Sorry, miss bookworm,” Ron stuck his tongue out her and huffed.

             “You’re so childish,” she commented.

“Well at least I’m not a li-,” before he could finish, Professor Dumbledore stood up and the hall gave their attention to him.

“Thank you. Students, we are very fortunate to host the wizarding school from Salem. They will be taking part in the dancing contest and will be adapting to the Hogwarts curriculum. Please make them feel as if they were at home. And to celebrate this joyous occasion, we shall hold a big feast at the end of the year for them and now, we shall sort them,” he announced and watched the doors open.

Harry, Hermione, and Ron turned to the oak doors, seeing the students walk in, chattering quietly as they gathered in the front of the hall.

Professor McGonagall stepped down as the head mistress of the school sat next to Professor Sprout.

“I welcome you to Hogwarts. When I call your name please proceed here and the Sorting Hat shall place you in your house,” she said sternly.

“Yoshika, Sakura.” A girl with long black hair and brown eyes stepped up and sat down. She looked about their age, but she was Chinese or Japanese.

“Well, your blood is striving to give you courage. GRYFFINDOR!” The Sorting Hat shouted. Everyone clapped as she smiled and made her way down to the Gryffindor table, sitting next to Hermione.

“Ray, Darien.” Then a boy in his sixth year stepped up. He had dark brown hair that spilled across his forehead, almost covering his hazel eyes.

“You’re also full of courage, but you have the intelligence. GRYFFINDOR!” Slowly, he walked to Sakura and sat down beside her. Harry glanced at Darien and Sakura, watching them talk.

“Tracey, Shawn.” A boy with blonde hair and clear blue eyes of the age thirteen eagerly sat on the chair.

“You’re the energetic one but full of brains. HUFFLEPUFF!” The boy ran down and excitedly sat down.

“Matthews, Violet.” Harry stared as he watched a girl solemnly walking up to the stool. Her hair was black with dark purple highlights. But what he noticed easily about her was that she had violet eyes.

“My my. You’re the cunning one. SLYTHERIN!”

As Violet walked to the Slytherin table past Harry and Hermione, he felt something that he feared. His scar burned.
