A/N: This is a story that came to me, pretty much from nowhere. It's totally AU, pretty much wiping the slate clean and starting over. I will try to keep all the characters IC, but there is a chance that I'll mess that up.

But anyway, enough of that. On to the story.

Godric's Hollow, August 15th, 1996

James Potter sat at the desk in his den with several notebooks on his desk. He was writing almost non-stop in one, which was almost full. He reached the end of his sentence, closed the notebook, and set his pen down. Leaning back, he closed his eyes and got lost in the events of the last month. He had to record them. He knew that what happened would be something people would like to read about in the future. He even went as far as to think that it would be historical.

Opening his eyes and sitting back up straight, he grabbed a loose sheet of paper out of his journal. It was blank, but not for long. He grabbed his pen and started writing.

"As I said before, we have been ordered to go into hiding by the government. I would just like to say this to the ones who objected and said we should fight: we are a tiny underground; one hundred, possibly two hundred, but that's it. Two hundred Psions wouldn't be able to hold off a fully trained, battle-ready army for any significant amount of time. Any little mistake would allow them to kill all of us. There is nothing that we can do, except to go into hiding. Vote on this will not be necessary. Common sense should be enough of a deciding factor. The whole school should be moved into hiding. Where it will be moved to will be voted on at the next meeting."

James folded the sheet of paper up, put his hand over it, and closed his eyes for a second. The letter disappeared, and he opened his eyes. James got up and left the room, fully confident that he was doing the right thing.

At this same time, Harry Potter sat on his bed, lost in his thoughts. As he stared out the window, many things went through his mind. His crumbling relationship with his parents, the need to go into hiding, and Hermione were all things that went through his mind. None of them were that good of things to be thinking about at the moment.

He didn't know how his relationship with his parents would be able to get any worse. He knew that his father was in charge of the Psions. His father knew that he had friends outside of there. He didn't know why he couldn't find a way for him to be with his friends. Yet, he was taking him away from his friends.

There was also the matter of having to go into hiding. Harry did not like that idea at all, but not just because he was going to be away from his friends. He wouldn't be able to go into public; he, along with the rest of the Psions, was going to be hunted for. He didn't want to have to hide, but he would have to.

There was also Hermione. She was one of the friends that he was going to be leaving behind. She had been his best friend for many years. Harry wasn't even sure exactly how long. His best guess would be about eight years. Hermione would probably know better than he would. She always remembered things like that. But not only things like that, Harry reminded himself. She remembered a lot of important times for both of them, important times in their friendship.

He needed her so much at that moment. Harry needed to be with her. He didn't care what he had to do. He was going to be with her; no one was going to be able to keep the two of them apart.

"James, I'm getting really worried about Harry," Lily said.

"I am too, Lily," James said, turning around in his chair to face her. "There's just the fact that I can't do anything about it. I know that he's not happy because we have to go into hiding, but there's nothing that can be done about that; we'd have no chance if we refused to hide."

"I know that you can't do anything to keep us from going into hiding, but you could at least try to do something for Harry. That's the least you can do."

"I'll do something," James said, getting out of his chair. "I don't know what, but I know that I'll do something."

While all that was going on, Harry was coming up with a plan. He knew what he was going to do; he just needed to know how he was going to do that. Suddenly, he wasn't lost in his thoughts anymore. He knew exactly where in his thoughts he was. Closing his eyes tightly, he concentrated on what he wanted. Suddenly, he disappeared, along with everything that he owned in that room.

James stood outside his son's room, apprehensive about opening the door. He didn't know what he was going to do for him; he was going to let Harry decide what they were going to do. He was just afraid that Harry wasn't going to want to do anything or was going to tell him to leave him alone, which he fully expected. He really wouldn't blame Harry for that; he just wished that it wasn't going to happen.

James finally got the courage to open the door, but as soon as he did, he knew something didn't feel right. He didn't have to look around the room for long to figure out what was wrong: everything was missing. James ran down, in a panic, to tell Lily.

Harry was already far, far away. He wasn't sure where he was, but he knew that it was far enough away he could stay away for a good amount of time. He was exhausted; everything that he was taking with him was shrunk and in his pocket, yet he knew he had at least one more thing to do. He had had his eyes closed in concentration for several minutes when a small, black ball, about the size of a golf ball, appeared in his hand. He found a spot to hide the things that he had brought with him, concentrated on the spot where they were hidden, then, after he appeared satisfied, disappeared yet again.

Hermione Granger heard a noise outside her house. It was late at night, and she was the only person in her house that was awake. It wasn't very loud, but she felt the need to investigate it. She didn't know why she did; she just felt that she needed to. She got up, put enough clothes on that she wouldn't be cold, and walked outside. After looking around for five minutes, she found the source of the noise.

Someone had collapsed on the front porch of her house. The person was too heavy for her to carry, but she somehow managed to get him into the house. When she got inside, into the light, she finally recognized who it was.

"Harry?"
