1. Chapter 1

You walk around everyday holding you breathe just the slightest bit, never quite sure you can take a deep breath and relax. You watch him eat and talk and walk to class and you wait. You’re not sure what will happen or when it will happen but you know it will. One day he’ll turn to you with a look of confusion.

“What is she doing there? Why is she here?”

Because he is wonderful and you just have bushy brown hair and ink stained cuffs and tons of useless and vital information. You are never quite sure which category the facts in your head will fall into, so you try to know as much as possible. About everything.

It’s your shield, your mantra, your cache. It’s what has made you . . . well, you.

And you hope it’s enough.

You are just a girl and he’s a hero to the world and to your friends and to you. He’s everything and you love him, all of him, from his fearlessness to his flaws and neurosis. You always will, even after he’s discovered you ink stains and useless information.

So you sit quietly and wait patiently and enjoy the moments you are there. You hold his hand and feel his warmth and you kiss him every chance you get. You sit next to him and smile when he smiles and wait when he’s melancholy. You listen and hope and wish. And you are thankful.

At the end of the day you think, Thank you for letting me be here.

And every time he turns to you, you flinch.
