Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End The loud snores of the child seemed like apocalyptic explosions in the silent forest. A twig snapped and the boy woke. He sat up and looked around. He instinctively reached up to rub the sleep form his eyes and encountered the soft cloth of his blindfold. Another twig snapped loudly. The person approaching, who would have normally been obscured by the deep shadows, stuck out in the boy's vision. “Damn it!” the man whispered as he tripped on a rock, rolling his ankle. He attempted to limp into thicker shadows. The boy was confused, for he could see the man perfectly despite his blindness. In the cool blue shadows of the massive trees, the seedy man was marked clearly, the bright orange shade of his body heat revealing him. “Oh bloody hell, I can see!” the excitable child thought to himself. Calming himself quickly, he remembered the lurking figure. A nagging feeling told him that the man meant him harm. In his excitement, the boy lost track of the shady man. From seemingly out of nowhere, the man tackled the boy. He put his knee on the boy's chest and a wand against the boy's throat. “Give me all your money.” The thief growled softly. He looked around with the frantic nervousness of a weasel being stalked. “I don't have any money.” The boy was not afraid, but he put a waver in his voice for the thief's sake. “I'm only a homeless kid. All I have is my blindfold.” A look of suspicion crossed the thief's face, wondering whether or not to believe the child. Looking over the apathetic boy, he saw that the blood-red cloth of the blindfold of the blindfold was pristine compared to the thread-bare robes that would only provide meager warmth. “This should fetch a fine price!” the thief mumbled excitedly as he rubbed the smooth cloth. “So I think I'll take it” The boy blinked and rubbed his eyes after the thief ripped the blindfold from his face, since they had not been exposed to light since in years. “Hold still or I'll gut you!” the thief exclaimed, jumping at the boy's sudden movement He looked over the child, who was still rubbing his eyes. When the boy moved his hands away form, the thief leapt up in shock. The boy's corneas were yellow from the boy's acute malnutrition, and his pupils had atrophied from no exposure to light, shrinking them to reptilian slits. At this sight the thief shouted in surprise. “DEMON!!!” the thief yelled and leapt at the child once more. “That blindfold does not belong to you!” the boy said sternly, taking advantage of the thief's terror by turning his voice into a deep growl. At this the thief dropped the blindfold and fled in terror, shrieking gibberish at the top of his lungs as he went. When the man was out of sight, the boy picked up his blindfold and sat down at the base of a tree. He sat gazing up at the clear sky, pondering such questions as why the man was so afraid and why he could suddenly see. As he pondered these questions, the world began to spin. He could still hear the birds chirping as everything faded to black. As the child came to, he didn't know how much time had passed. His mind was groggy, so he did not register the overcast sky and setting sun. He sat up slowly, trying to clear his head. He realized that he was still in the forest, but the trees were bare and several had fallen over. He put his hand on the ground to support his weight and noticed that the very soil was scorched as if by a great cataclysm. He suddenly realized that his blindfold, his only worldly possession, was gone. As he searched frantically along the ground for his blindfold, he came upon a massive log. It was about as thick as a redwood and was longer than ten full grown men lying down, head to foot. He ran his hand along the log, and it felt so rotted it felt almost scaly. The raven haired boy turned away to continue searching. Sensing movement behind him, he quickly turned around. In his brief observation, he failed to notice that the log was gone. “Beard of Merlin!” The boy thought, “Where is my blindfold” His thoughts were cutoff as he was knocked of his feet by a powerful blow. Sliding across the ground, he hit the base of a charred tree. He raised his head to see what hit him. At first the boy saw nothing, then the cool blue shadows shifted, and a gigantic serpent emerged. Though its dark body blended into the shadows its body heat allowed the boy to see it. His eyes locking on to the serpent the boy felt a dark power awaken at the back of his mind. The boy's pupils shrank to reptilian slits and he fell to all fours. With unnatural speed, the boy leapt into the air and landed on the serpent's back. Moving so fast that it was little more than a flash the serpent flung the boy into the air and devoured him as he fell. “Harry, wake up.” A soft feminine voice said. “It's no use, Hermione. I don't see why you bother.” Another, deeper, voice said. “He will wake up!” Hermione exclaimed. “He's been unconscious for more than a month, even the healers say he might never wake up. Give it up!” The boy yelled. Hermione slapped the boy and proceeded to berate him. “RON, HOW COULD YOU JUST GIVE UP ON YOUR BEST FRIEND LIKE THAT?!” As she yelled this Harry began to thrash violently. Ron ran over to the end of the bed and held down Harry's legs. The healer ran in and placed a thin strip of wood in Harry's mouth, which he immediately bit down on. “Harry, please calm down.” Hermione pleaded. “Whatever you see isn't real.” Slowly Harry stopped thrashing. Hermione continued to speak softly in his ear, until he opened his eyes and spoke. “Hermione, don't take her, please!” he said in a soft dejected voice. At this she helped him sit up then immediately embraced him. “Don't worry Harry I'm right here.” Hermione said, stroking his hair soothingly. “Thank the Merlin you're awake! You've been unconscious for more than a month now.” Harry didn't answer, for he was very confused. He stared off into space with those strange green eyes of his. Though he was comfortable in Hermione's arms, knowing that the whole ordeal was nothing more than a nightmare, he felt anger rising within him like a serpent rearing to strike.
