A/N: I would like to thank The Cheshire Cat for taking the time to beta my work for me.

Chapter One: Attack on the Potters

“Master…the Potters live at 31 Brighton Ct. in Godric's Hollow.”

“Thank you, Wormtail. You shall be rewarded, for giving me the information that I wanted from you.” He leaned back and smiled. It wasn't really a smile, so much as a grotesque imitation of a smile. “You will not be rewarded for how long it took you to give it to me. Now, I want you to go. I shall summon you soon.” He-who-must-not-be-named waved his hand, and the man who went by the name of Peter Pettigrew briefly bowed and slinked away from his master.

“Now, I shall reach my goal. I will remove my only possible obstacle.” With that said, Tom Riddle Apparated away.

After taking a few moments to orient himself after the Apparition, Tom smiled as he walked through Godric's Hollow. Walking with purpose, he made his way through the small village in the southwest of England. Constantly looking at road signs, he quickly found the road that the Potters' were located on.

As Riddle made his way down the street, his red eyes searched the numbers of the mail boxes in front of each home. It didn't take long to reach his destination. He stopped and looked up at the Potters' small cottage. With a small sigh he said, “At last, I shall have my revenge. These two imbeciles have defied me three times, and the price for that will be their undoing. They shall have to witness the youngest Potters' demise.”

As he made his way towards the front door Voldemort withdrew his wand from his robes and quickly placed a number of wards around the area. He was trying to minimize the rescue attempts. Once the wards were in place, he advanced toward the house. Upon reaching the entrance, Voldemort quickly and quietly fired a Reductor curse, causing the door to explode.

At the sound of the explosion James Potter turned to his wife. “Lily, grab Harry, and run for it. Do it now! I'll hold him off,” and he ran to the front of the house.

Lily Potter didn't need to be told twice. She quickly raced up the stairs to the room where their only son Harry, lay asleep in his crib. James, quickly fired a Stupefy towards the spot where the front door used to be, not knowing if the spell made contact or not. He ran and rolled behind the couch, yelling, “If you have come to lay your wand on Harry, then I can tell you that you will regret ever setting foot near this place.”

“James Potter, it is so good to see you again.” Voldemort stepped through the busted doorway, “Why do you say that I shall regret it? I don't want to harm little Harry. I want to kill him.” With that, a purple light shot out of his raised wand. James continued his evasive tactics. “Don't act as if you don't know. The only way that you will reach my son, is if you go through me first,” James said as he fired another stunning curse towards Voldemort.

This time Tom quickly raised his shield, the spell rebounding back upon James. At the sight of the spell being reflected, James ducked and the curse struck the wall, leaving a gaping hole. Voldemort continued, “Actually, Potter, the main reason that I have come here is to show you, and your lovely wife, what the ultimate price of defying me is. This is just a small sample of what I can do.” He sent a Reductor towards the dining room wall that James was hiding behind.

The wall was instantly destroyed by the spell and James was trapped underneath the rubble. Realizing the situation, he tried to Apparate out, but the Anti-Apparition wards prevented it.

Seeing James' attempts to Apparate made Voldemort laugh. “There is no way that you can Apparate.” he waved his hand to indicate the house. “I took the liberty of placing Anti-Apparation wards to thwart your feeble attempts at escaping. But now, I want to have some fun.” With a wicked smile, he waved his wand and uttered, “Crucio.”

James writhed and convulsed on the floor. Voldemort declared, “You know something Potter, I was amazed, and surprised, when Peter Pettigrew informed me that you had made him your Secret Keeper.” At this James, attempted to look You-Know-Who in the eye. Seeing the look of shock on James' face, Voldemort, released the curse, and continued his tirade.

“By the looks of things Potter, it must come as a surprise to you. For the past year, your precious Wormtail has been faithfully spying for me. He has informed me of everything that you and the Order have been up to. Also, from what Peter has told me, I gather that no one even suspected him as the spy. So, what do you have to say to that Potter?”

Seeing that James still in shock, Tom happily said “Luckily for me, you chose Pettigrew instead of Black. Now, I believe that it is time for me to finish what I started.” With a wave of his wand, Voldemort cleared away the damaged wall on top of James.

Once the rubble was gone, Riddle quickly petrified and magically bound James, so that he couldn't get away. Satisfied that James, wouldn't be going anywhere, Voldemort cast Mobilicorpus at James' body and with another flick of his wand, the two of them headed up the stairs to where Lily and Harry were hiding.

While James was trying to prevent Voldemort from laying hands on Harry, Lily had been upstairs in Harry's bedroom. Once Lily had reached his bedroom, she raced across the floor to her young son. Upon reaching Harry's crib, Lily, saw that he was wide awake. Since she didn't have much time she quickly, but gently lifted the infant into her arms.

“Harry my son, with all the love that a mother can give to her child, I offer all of mine to you. I give you my love as a form of protection. If anyone or anything tries to harm you, or if they try to touch you with negative thoughts, they will have it rebound upon them. As part of the protection, the other half of your heart will reinforce it. It will come from the person who you shall give your heart to. Until that day my son, may my love protect you.” As Lily said these words, a bright, pure light engulfed Harry.

Seeing the light touch Harry, Lily knew that the ancient magic had placed a powerful protection over him. After the light had finally dissolved away, she placed her son back into his crib. The door to the room burst open as she pulled her hands away.

She instantly turned around so that she could look the murderer in the face. Before she could say anything, Riddle spoke “Lily Potter, I had thought that I would find you up here. Now that I have found you, I have a gift.” With that, Voldemort floated James' body into Harry's room, “Now, step aside so that I can fulfill my destiny.”

“Voldemort, there is no way that I am going stand by and allow you to harm Harry. You may have beaten James,” Lily lowered her head and her hair started swirling around her face, “but you can rest assured that you shall not get past me.” Lily manoeuvred her body between the cold-hearted killer and her baby.

“For your information, Mudblood, I have beaten your precious husband, but I have also spared him. I want him to witness the price for defying me.” Voldemort dumped James' body onto the floor unceremoniously.

At the sight of James' body Lily cried out “What have you done to him?”

“Your blood traitor husband has just experienced the Cruciatus Curse, and at the moment he is in a Full-Body Curse. I want him to watch what I am about to do. Now, if you don't want to be harmed, I suggest that you step aside.”

“I will not step aside. I am not going to stand by and allow you to harm an innocent child. Actually, if I were you, I would flee from here because if you attempt to harm or touch Harry, I can assure you the consequences will be painful.”

“There is nothing in this world that can harm me. I am the most powerful wizard of all time. Now, stand aside silly girl, or you shall pay the ultimate price.”

“I would die, before I allowed you to touch my son.”

“If it is death that you want, then I think I can oblige.” A slow grin spread across his face. “Actually, I can come up with something more terrible than death for you Mudblood.” With that Voldemort, pointed his wand at Lily and a dark coloured curse struck her.

As the curse struck Lily, she felt a sudden pain in her abdomen. As the pain spread, she knew that Voldemort had just destroyed her reproductive system, and she knew that her unborn child had been obliterated. Lily resisted the urge to break down into tears, but she wouldn't give Voldemort, the satisfaction of seeing her crying.

After the curse completed its task, Voldemort spoke, “How does it feel, knowing that you won't be able to give birth to anymore filthy half-bloods?”

“You may have just prevented me from giving Harry any siblings, but you can rest assured that I will make sure that Harry has everything in life that he needs.” At this, Voldemort's anger reached its boiling point. However instead of casting Crucio at Lily, he just waved his wand. Before she could react, Lily was flung across the room, where she was then bound so that she could witness the death of her son with her husband.

Once he was finished, he moved over to Harry's bed. As he looked into the crib, he saw a little boy who resembled his father. In fact, he looked virtually identical to James Potter at that age, except his eyes were the exact same shade of green as his mother's.

“Harry Potter, it was prophesied that you would have the power to destroy me, Lord Voldemort, if allowed to live. So, the only solution is to destroy you. Good-Bye, Harry Potter. Avada Kedavra!” What took place next surprised James and Lily, but even more importantly, it surprised Voldemort.

As the killing curse streaked towards Harry, James and Lily struggled against their bonds in a fruitless attempt to rescue their son. They were trapped and could only watch as their only child was murdered by this evil man. Just as the curse touched Harry, it rebounded back to Voldemort. Seeing that the curse was heading straight towards him, he tried to leave but he was unable to Apparate due to the Anti-Apparition wards that he had installed on the cottage.

The rebounded curse struck Voldemort in the chest and flung him across the room. He felt himself being ripped asunder as the killing curse destroyed his body. As he writhed in agony, some of his powers were transferred to Harry, unbeknownst to anyone. Voldemort, or what was left of him, quickly fled from Godric's Hollow to a place of safety very far away.

Harry's parents watched in shock as Voldemort was ripped apart before their very eyes. James couldn't believe that somehow Harry had deflected the curse back at Voldemort. Lily couldn't help but cry in relief because the protection that she had given Harry worked.

As they watched what was happening in the room, the curses that were holding them dissipated. As soon as he was free James slowly got up from of the floor and went to see how Lily and Harry were doing. Reaching his wife's side, James saw that she was crying.

Before James could even say a word, Lily spoke. “James, check on Harry. I need to know that he is alright.”

“Lily, shouldn't I check on you first? I need to see if you are hurt.”

“I will be fine but please check Harry.”

“Okay baby, I'll check on Harry for you.” With that James, slowly inched his way over to Harry's crib.

As he reached Harry's crib, James could hear his son's soft whimpers. James, tried his best to get up from the floor, but the effects of the Cruciatus Curse were still affecting him. Since he couldn't get up from up the floor, James said “Lily, from what I can hear, Harry seems to be okay. What we really need is urgent help.”

“Just hang in there James. I'll see what I can do.” With that Lily, slowly got up and made her way across the room to help her husband and child.

After reaching James and Harry, Lily waved her wand to see the exact injuries that James had sustained from Voldemort. The readout that the diagnosis spell gave her showed that he had a couple of broken bones, a concussion and minor nerve damage from the Cruciatus Curse. Lily knew that James would need immediate medical attention. So with a quick flick of her wand, Lily splinted up James' broken bones so that further damage could be avoided while they transported to safety. Once Lily had finished seeing to James, she moved to the crib to check on her son.

As Lily approached Harry, she could hear him crying. Reaching the side of the bed, Lily gently lifted him up so that she could check on him. The readout from the test indicated that he was fine. Although he seemed to okay, Lily did notice that a small, lightning shaped scar on his forehead. The scar confirmed her worst fears and before Lily could even contemplate the consequences of her actions she carried Harry over to where James was located so that they could all get to safety.

At the moment that Lily had James by her side, she picked up a stuffed bear of Harry's and turned it into a Portkey. During the wait for the toy to return to its normal colour, Lily summoned James' wand and the emergency kit, a bag that she had prepared in advance, for any possible situation. Once Lily had James' wand and the emergency bag were in their hands, she quickly placed the Portkey on top of James and with Harry in one arm, she touched the Portkey. Instantly the three disappeared in a swirl of colours. Within moments of leaving the room, the roof caved in.

In a twirling kaleidoscope of colour, James, Lily and Harry appeared in the hospital wing of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The moment that they appeared, Lily shouted out “Madam Pomfrey! I've got a medical emergency!” At the sound of her cry, Poppy came running out from her private quarters to see what the emergency was. No sooner had she noticed that it was the Potter family, she went into action.

Once Poppy reached the Potters she said, “Lily, can you tell me what happened? I need to I know what to treat everyone for.”

“Poppy, we were discovered and attacked by Voldemort. From what I can gather, James has a concussion, a few broken bones and minor nerve damage from being placed under the Cruciatus Curse. Harry seems to be fine and as for myself I was struck by a dark curse that destroyed my reproductive system along with…” Lily couldn't finish the sentence because, it was at this time that she broke into tears and wept for her unborn child.

Seeing that Lily was now crying, Poppy placed her hand on Lily's shoulder. As Poppy comforted Lily, she also summoned a house-elf and imparted instructions that Dumbledore and McGonagall were needed at once in the hospital wing. The house-elf just nodded, and with a snap of his fingers, he Dis-Apparated.

Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall had just finished having a private discussion in Albus' office when they were suddenly interrupted by a house elf.

Before Albus could even ask why he was there, the house-elf spoke, “Professor Dumbledore, Twinkie is sorry for disturbing you but Madam Pomfrey says you and professor McGonagall are needed in the hospital wing at once.”

“Twinkie, did Poppy say what the problem was?”

“No sir but she says that Twinkie, is to tell you that you are needed at once.”

“Twinkie please inform Poppy, that Minerva and I shall be there momentarily.”

“Twinkie understands Headmaster.” With a snap of his fingers, Twinkie returned to the hospital wing.

Once Twinkie was gone, Minerva turned to face Albus and said, “Albus, what could be the possible reason that you and I are needed to be in the hospital wing at this time of night?”

“I don't know Minerva but I have a feeling that we shall find the answer. Fawkes can you please fire-flash Minerva and myself to the hospital wing?” Fawkes flew from his perch and landed on Dumbledore's shoulder. Albus indicated that Minerva should grasp the phoenix by the tail; next thing they knew, they were both in the hospital wing.

The very moment that they appeared in the hospital wing, they realized why they had been called. At the sight of who was there, Albus spoke, “Poppy, what has happened to them?”

“Albus, from what Lily has told me, You-Know-Who paid a visit to them this evening. While I don't know the full story, I would like some assistance, so that I can start treating them for their injuries.”

At this Minerva spoke, “Poppy, how may I be of service?”

“Minerva, if you would be so kind as to help Lily get comfortable, I can attend to James.”

Minerva, didn't need to be told twice. She was soon sitting beside Lily and had her arms wrapped around her. They were talking quietly between themselves. Within a few minutes, Lily was able to get up and get dressed into more comfortable clothing.

After Minerva had relieved her of Lily, Poppy turned her attention to James. With a quick flick of her wand, Poppy soon had James lying on top of the bed so that she could examine him. She confirmed what Lily had told her. For the broken bones and concussion, she stabilized him with a wave of her wand. But for the nerve damage, she went to a nearby cupboard and brought out a potion and a goblet that would relieve the lingering pain. After pouring out the dosage that James needed to take, she propped him up so that he could swallow the potion, then she tucked James into bed. He needed sleep to recover from the damage. Also he needed his rest so that the Skele-Gro could replace the bones in James' body that Poppy had removed. The moment that she was finished attending to James' injuries, that she turned her attention towards Lily.

Poppy approached Lily, while gently talking to her. “Lily, you will be delighted to know that I have treated James for his injuries and I expect him to make a full recovery. Now, let's see what I can do for you?”

“Poppy, I am afraid that there is no way for you to heal me. Since Voldemort, destroyed my reproductive system, and my unborn baby, I am afraid that only time will heal my wounds.”

“Even if that's the case, I would still like to examine you. I need to see that you are going to be alright. Now, why don't you climb into bed, and I'll get the examination over with as quickly as I possibly can.” Lily, who knew better than to argue with Poppy, slid into bed, handing Harry over to Professor Dumbledore.

During the examination of Lily, Poppy confirmed yet again that Lily's reproductive system had been completely removed from her body. In order to treat Lily for her injuries, Poppy waved her wand at Lily's abdomen so that she was able to close the wounds from Voldemort's spell. Also she placed Lily on a series of potions to facilitate the effects of the spell. Once she was satisfied that Lily would survive, she turned her attention towards baby Harry, whom was quite happy at being held by professor Dumbledore.

The examination of Harry, didn't take very long. From what Poppy could tell, Harry had no real injuries at all. However she did notice that Harry's magical power was a little higher than normal for a child his age, but she put it down to what he had just been through. After Poppy was happy with Harry, she turned to Lily and said, “Lily, you will be pleased to know that Harry sustained no kind of injury at all, but I did notice that his level of magic is a bit high for a child of his age. Do you have any idea as to what may have caused that at all?”

“No Poppy, I am afraid that I don't know. However, if you don't mind, may I please speak with Professor Dumbledore? There are a few things that he needs to know.”

“I would rather that you didn't but knowing Albus, he would probably insist that you did.” At this she turned to face Albus, and continued, “Albus, I know that you are going to have a chat with James and Lily but I insist that you keep it brief because these two have been through a terrible ordeal. They need time for their injuries to heal.”

“Don't worry Poppy, I'll try to keep the conversation as brief as possible.” With that assurance, Madame Pomfrey returned to her private quarters.

Before Albus began his chat with Lily, he gently handed Harry back to his mother. No sooner was Harry back in her arms, than Lily began to rock back and forth singing Harry's favourite lullaby. While she was singing to Harry, Albus waved his wand and he secured the hospital wing from prying eyes and ears.

Once Albus was ready, he began the conversation with Lily. “Lily, if you are up to it, I need to know what happened tonight. The most important thing that I need to know, how on earth did Tom find you?”

“Albus, tonight Voldemort arrived at our home in Godric's Hollow with the intent to kill Harry. Upon his arrival…” with that Lily went on to describe everything that had taken place. When she finished Albus just sat back in his chair beside Lily's bed and sighed.

He sat in silence for a few minutes before speaking, “There is no doubt in my mind that Tom's power has finally been broken and as a result of that, he has now chosen and marked Harry as his equal. Because of this attack, Harry's life is going to be in grave danger and we are going to have to decide what will be the best course of action. For now, I believe that we shall leave that for tomorrow. You need your rest and I have a few things that need to be seen to. Now, if you will excuse me, I had best be going.” Before he had walked very far, he conjured up a small bed for Lily, to place Harry in, if she so wished.

Once his business was finished in the hospital wing, Albus left and returned to his office. He needed to send messages about what had happened tonight. Little did he know, that word was already spreading fast about what had occurred in Godric's Hollow.

Chapter Two: Aftermath of the Attack

The following morning James and Lily awoke to the sights and smells of the hospital wing of Hogwarts. After their initial panic at awakening in a strange place, they remembered their reason for being there, the attack that had occurred on their home. However before they could think about what had happened last night, the doors to the hospital wing opened to reveal the Headmaster of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore.

Since Professor Dumbledore had come to visit them so early in the day, they were both apprehensive about the discussion that was to follow. Albus began speaking as he crossed the threshold into the hospital proper. He wasn't the kind of person to keep others waiting, especially if he wanted to get to the bottom of something.

“James, Lily.” He nodded his head at their respective beds. “I have just had a chat with Poppy. From what she told me, you two should be able to leave the hospital wing sometime later today.” the young couple sighed in obvious relief. “Now, I believe that we have much to discuss but before we do, I think that you two should read a couple of newspaper articles that were published this morning.”

“What could be so important that Lily and I, have to read the Daily Prophet before we get to leave?”

“I am afraid that the newspapers concern both Harry and Sirius. Before I explain further, I strongly urge you two to read the papers.”

“Why can't you just tell us what the problem is?” James rubbed the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger. This was just getting to be beyond ridiculous.

“If he thinks that we should read the papers first, then I think we should.” she raised her hand up towards Professor Dumbledore. “Albus, if you would please hand them over.” The imperative tone in her sentence was impossible to ignore.

He handed the papers over with a resigned sigh. He knew that neither of them would be happy with what they contained.

After taking the papers from Albus, Lily opened the first one. The article declared the following:

Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived?

In the wee hours of today, fifteen month old Harry Potter, the son of James and Lily Potter, somehow destroyed He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

While we do not know the full story, or the details of what exactly happened, it has been reported that little Harry Potter survived the Killing Curse that was used against him.

As this is the first time that someone has ever survived the Killing Curse, people everywhere have dubbed the youngest Potter “The Boy Who Lived”.

On behalf of everyone at the Daily Prophet I would like to thank Harry Potter for vanquishing He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Hopefully, we can recapture the peaceful days before the Dark Lord first came to power. Hold onto your loved ones, we have all survived the darkest time in recent history.

After reading that article, Lily set the paper down and said, “By the looks of things, everyone is going to call our little Harry, `The Boy Who Lived'.”

“Yes it certainly looks that way. However, let us both read the second article before we discuss them.” With that, James picked up the paper and opened it. He read the headline and put it down immediately. He just couldn't believe what he saw. Lily, who had been busy folding the first paper didn't see James' reaction.

“Lily, please tell me it isn't true.” He looked at her pleadingly, begging for confirmation with his eyes.

“What are you talking about?”

“Here, just read it.” With that, James shoved the second Daily Prophet at Lily.

As he shoved it into her hands, Lily said, “Really, James, there is no need for rude behaviour, especially…” However, Lily didn't finish her statement because she had just caught sight of the headline on the second paper:

Sirius Black kills Peter Pettigrew and Thirteen Muggles

After news spread of the downfall of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Sirius Black, Secret Keeper of James and Lily Potter, was cornered in a Muggle village by Peter Pettigrew.

According to Muggle witnesses, whose memories were wiped after their statements were taken, said that little Peter Pettigrew yelled out so that everyone could hear that Sirius Black had betrayed James and Lily to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

By the time Ministry officials arrived on the scene, the only thing that was left of Peter Pettigrew was a finger. Thirteen Muggles were dead and Sirius Black was laughing his head off at the scene.

After taking in the scenario, the Ministry officials quickly led Sirius Black away to what we assume was the Ministry for questioning, or to Azkaban, where he will await his trial.

This is a major tragedy for James Potter…

Lily didn't finish reading the article. She was so frustrated that she crushed it up and threw it across the room.

Seeing what his wife had just done to the newspaper, James turned to face Dumbledore and said, “Albus, would you care to explain to me exactly how Sirius, got into this fine mess?”

“From what I assume, Sirius, must have arrived a few moments after Lily, was able to Portkey to Hogwarts. Upon arriving at your home, Sirius must have seen the damage from the attack. He most likely searched the house to see if you were still inside. Since he couldn't find any bodies in the wreckage of the house, Sirius thought that Peter might know where you three might be. So with that thought, Sirius must have decided to search for Peter. As for the confrontation with Peter, I only know what is in the paper. But, I shall say this I believe that, Sirius was not your Secret Keeper because Lily, informed me of the change to Peter.”

“If Lily told you that, then as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, couldn't you persuade the Ministry to release Sirius?”

“James, while I may have influence at the Ministry, I am afraid that my hands are tied in this matter.” At this, James, wanted to yell and curse, but Albus, raised his hand to James, so that he could finish.

“Even if I could persuade the Ministry and insist that Sirius, was not your Secret Keeper, you are forgetting one little thing. According to the paper, Sirius, has been charged with killing those thirteen Muggles. He has also been accused of the murder of, Peter Pettigrew as well. With the statements of all those Muggles, I am afraid that there isn't much that I can do.”

“Surely there must be something? What can we do to rescue Sirius, from going to Azkaban, Albus?”

“As I said , my hands are tied. I am afraid that Barty Crouch has already sent Sirius, to Azkaban. However, there is one thing that I can do for him. I can use my powers as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot and order that, Sirius be given a minimum security cell. They're not patrolled by the dementors that guard Azkaban.”

“What good will that do Sirius? He very well may be spending the rest of his life in that awful place.”

“You know as much about Dementors just as I do. If a person is near Dementors, but given some short respites from their attention, then that person may retain some happiness. By retaining some of their happier memories, they can make their time a little more pleasant. In fact, they might be able to actually leave Azkaban with their sanity intact.”

At hearing this prospect, James, turned to face Albus. He said, “How soon can you have that transfer made up?”

“I have already taken the liberty of writing up that order just a short time ago. Even as I am speaking, I expect that, Sirius should be in his new cell at Azkaban. Now, I believe that we need to discuss and plan what is to happen with you three now that your lives are at even greater risk.”

“Just how are our lives in danger? I mean surely we can't be in that great of danger considering that, Voldemort has just been defeated?”

“James, the reason that you and your family are still in danger is that while, Voldemort may have been vanquished, I am afraid that the Death Eaters and the rest of, Tom's supporters are still at large. Now that they have no leader, it is my guess that the Death Eaters will be seeking revenge, especially after what just happened.”

“So what do you think we should do?” Lily interjected.

“I have a couple of ideas that might suit you three, but I am not sure how well you will agree with them.”

At this, Lily became defensive and said, “Over the years, I have always listened to your wisdom and counsel. However, if you are planning to separate us, then you can get that idea right out of your head. I am not going to allow you to send, Harry to live with my relatives is that clear?”

“I would never dream of separating you from James and Harry, but I must admit that was one of the ideas that I was going to suggest. One idea is quite simple I can have your house in Godric's Hollow repaired, and you can return to live there if you wish. Of course, I will be willing to be your Secret- Keeper. You can also try living in the Muggle world - I don't think that the Death Eaters would ever have a chance of finding you three if you lived in another part of England, where your fame and notoriety will not follow.”

“You have given us a few things to discuss. If you can excuse us for a while, I believe that we need to talk about what would be best for the three of us.”

“Of course, once you have made your decision, please come to my office so that I will know what your plans are. Now, if I may take my leave, I believe that Poppy will be bringing you something to eat.” With that, Albus departed from the hospital wing. James and Lily needed to have their breakfast and make their difficult decision.

After James, Lily and Harry had eaten and showered, they sat down in Poppy's office in order to discuss their options and decide on the best choice for their family.

“Have you given any consideration as to what option we should go with?”

“After taking in everything, I think that it might be best that we live in another part of England. It will give, Harry a chance to have the most normal childhood that we could possibly give him. We could live on the outskirts of town, so that the two of you can have your fun with your brooms. However,” she waved a finger at James, “That doesn't mean that you can spend all day flying with Harry.” At this James pouted, but Lily continued.

“As I remember, before we went into hiding, we prepared a number of houses for Sirius, to use in case anything happened to us. If it's alright with you James, I think it might be best that we live in one of those places.”

“Love, I can see that you have given this a lot of thought and if it makes you happy, then by all means we can live in which ever house you want to. The only thing that I really ask is that we steer clear of the house that we set up in Ottery St. Catchpole.”

“Isn't that where the Weasleys live, James?”

“Yes, the Molly and Arthur have six sons and Molly has just recently given birth to a daughter. Knowing Molly, I wouldn't be surprised if she tells bedtime stories to her daughter about `The Boy Who Lived'. The last thing that I want for, Harry is to let him get to know the Weasley children at a very young age. I would feel more comfortable if, Harry met them when he goes to Hogwarts.”

“James, I generally find your ideas about Molly to be ridiculous, but I think you may be right about her in this case. I do like Molly, I think that we need to consider what is best for Harry. So, I think we should live in that house in Nottingham that we had prepared for Sirius.”

“Can you remember any about that particular house?”

“Well, from what I can remember, the house is roughly like our home in Godric's Hollow. It is a two-story house that contains all the necessary essentials for someone to live comfortably. As for the house itself, there is a small study and library, a potions lab and a small duelling room. So, we can teach, Harry a couple of spells before he goes to Hogwarts. Outside, there is a small area where you can teach him how to ride a broomstick. There is also a small swimming pool as well, for the summer.” Lily smiled wistfully. She really wanted this house.

Lily took a breath as she continued on. “The house has been extensively warded. No one who intends to harm us can breach the wards. As for the specific wards, there is an Anti-Apparition, Anti-Portkey, and if anyone tries to breach the wards the said person will be transported to a Ministry holding cell with the word `invader' on his or her forehead. The main protection, is that the Ministry of Magic won't be able to detect any kind of magic being used.”

“It sounds great to me. Why don't we go see Professor Dumbledore in his office? We need to tell him of our decision.”

“Alright, let's go.” James, Lily and Harry left the hospital wing and headed to Albus' office.

After traversing through the corridors of Hogwarts, James, Lily and Harry were soon standing in front of a very familiar gargoyle. As they approached the gargoyle, it instantly sprung alive so that James and Lily could go up to see Professor Dumbledore.

When he saw the gargoyle spring to life, James just shrugged his shoulders and indicated for, Lily to climb the stairs first. Once they were both on the stairs, they soon came to the door that had a griffin knocker. James, seized the knocker and knocked a few times on the door.

James and Lily then heard a voice speak clearly, “James, Lily, you may enter.” At hearing the invitation, James pushed open the door to Albus' office. The Potter family filed in, in silence.

As James and Lily stepped into his office, Albus looked up from behind his ornate desk. Since he had guests, he quickly waved his wand and two comfortable chairs were placed in front of it. With a gesture of his hand, Albus indicated that James and Lily, should seat themselves in the offered chairs. Once they were both seated, Albus spoke. “I assume you have reached a decision?”

It was Lily who spoke on behalf of the couple. “Albus, James and I have considered your options very carefully, we decided that we are going to live in a different part of England.

“Very well, I assume that you have everything already prepared?”

“Before we went into hiding, we prepared a couple of houses for Sirius to use if something were to happen to the two of us. We shall be living in one of them, and you can rest assured that we shall be perfectly safe there.”

“I have no doubt in my mind that the place is perfectly safe for you three. If I am not overstepping my bounds, can you tell me where you will be living?”

“James and I both know what Harry means to you. It is no secret that you consider Harry as your grandson, and I am sure that Harry will look up to you as a grandfather figure. Besides, do you remember what happened the first time that you held Harry in your arms?”

At this, Albus, chuckled and said, “If my memory serves me, I believe that, Harry puked all over my nice, brand new robes. You tried to clean the mess up but I told you that it wasn't necessary. All newborn babies do that kind of thing. Besides Harry, was going to sleep and I didn't want to disturb him. So, I insisted that you leave the mess alone. From that moment on, I knew that I would come to love Harry as a grandson.”

“Well, that's good because we will be expecting regular visits from you. We also expect to see you every year for Harry's birthday.”

“I wouldn't dream of missing Harry's birthday. If I don't come by, I know what the consequences will be.” he wiggled his eyebrows and grinned. “Now, I suggest that you should be getting to this new place, so that you three can get settled in.”

“Yes, we should be going because the sooner that we are at our new home, the sooner I shall feel more comfortable. Not that Hogwarts isn't my second home, it's just I feel more comfortable with some Muggle contraptions. The address of our new home is 99 Robin Lane, Nottingham.”

“James, Lily, before you depart for your new home, I would like you to give these gifts to Harry when he is old enough to handle them.” Albus handed to, James three parcels, all wrapped neatly in Golden Snitch wrapping paper.

As James, took the parcels from Albus, Albus explained what they were. “The longer parcel is a toy broomstick, which I think, Harry will immensely enjoy when the time comes for him to learn to how to fly. The smaller parcel is a practice Snitch, so that once he has mastered flying, Harry, will be able to catch a Golden Snitch. I expect that when he finally comes to Hogwarts, there will be a Seeker position for him in Gryffindor House. The third gift is a copy of Hogwarts A History, it is a version suitable for a child to read, understand. I am thoroughly convinced that, Harry must have inherited some of Lily's brains. Now, I need to hold him before you leave.” With that, Albus got up from behind his desk and extended his arms for the babe. Lily, stood up and put Harry into this incredible man's arms.

This time while Albus held Harry, he was able to feel the love and pride that he hadn't had felt in a very long time. For most of his life, Albus had had to fight Dark Lords, wizards, and the war that had been fought over the years. Due to the recent fall of Tom, which was mainly due to the little fellow that Albus held in his arms, he could relax a little. Albus swore to himself that he would protect, listen and give advice to this child. Most of all, Albus would make sure that Harry survived the prophecy. So that one day, he would be able to have a family of his own, with some lucky witch who would make him happy. If the universe had anything to do with it, Harry's lucky witch just might be as bright as his mother.

With those thoughts in mind, Albus gently returned Harry to Lily's awaiting arms. As Albus returned Harry to Lily, Harry, for some strange reason, was able to add Golden Snitches to Albus' robes.

Seeing the Snitches that were on Albus' robes, James laughed, and with a wink said, “Albus, it seems to me that, Harry has left yet another one of his famous trademarks all over your robes.”

Albus glanced at his favourite robes. Seeing the pattern on them, he chuckled. “It seems to me that, Harry, has just made me his number one fan and as his number one fan, I am looking forward to seeing his very first game here at Hogwarts.”

“Yes Albus, I am sure that you shall be excited. However, if we can get back to the matter at hand, I think that we had best be going-- we really need to get settled into our new home and I would like to do get there before it gets dark.”

“Yes, I would say that is the best thing to do. James, Lily if you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am willing to give you any kind of assistance that I can.” He bowed slightly.

“Thank you for your kind offer, Albus. We won't hesitate to contact you if we need anything. But right now, it's time for us to go.”

James shrunk down Harry's presents and carefully placed them into his pocket. Once this was done, James removed a clean hanky from his pocket. He quickly pointed his wand at it and muttered `Portus'. He held the handkerchief light, and as soon as it returned to its original colour, James, Lily and Harry grasped the Portkey and vanished from Albus' office.

The moment that James, Lily and Harry vanished Albus gently spoke, “May the powers of the universe watch over you and protect you. May they bring you safely back to us, to Hogwarts.” Once those words were said, Albus returned to the paper work that he needed to complete as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After travelling by Portkey from Dumbledore's office, James, Lily and Harry softly arrived at their new home in Nottingham. From the position where they had just landed, James and Lily both knew that this was going to be the perfect place for them to raise Harry. With that feeling in their hearts, the three entered their new home, to begin the next phase of their lives, as a family.

Chapter Three: Harry's Childhood

The next ten years went by quickly for James, Lily, and Harry Potter. While it only seemed like yesterday, that the Potter family had moved to Nottingham, the time spent there was very happy.

After settling into their new home in Nottingham, James and Lily set about raising Harry. For the first couple of days there, James and Lily found it difficult to settle Harry down, especially at bed-time.

Harry suffered from nightmares of the attack at Godric's Hollow. To help Harry adjust to his new surroundings, James transfigured Harry's bedroom to match the room that he had had at the Hollow. As soon as James transfigured the room, it seemed that Harry settled into the familiar environment, and he was able to relax a little more than he had previously. As for the nightmares that were plaguing Harry, James and Lily took turns staying with Harry until they heard the sounds of his deep, relaxed breathing. Once Harry was sound asleep at night, James and Lily were free to enjoy each other's company.

After Harry had finally become used to their new home, and the nightmares had eased up a little bit, he became the ideal child they had had to begin with. James and Lily raised Harry without any major hassles or problems. Well, other than the minor dramatics of daily life. Little did they know that they were in for quite a surprise as Harry grew up.

As Harry approached complete autonomy, he discovered the wonderful world of cupboards and drawers. James and Lily tried to make sure that everything was locked down to where he couldn't get inside them, but he occasionally wormed his way through their preventative measures. Whenever Harry had the opportunity, he would open up drawers and doors, and he would proceed to pull out all of their contents, so that he could play with them on the floor. While there was no real harm done when Harry got into the drawers, and cupboards, there was the fear he might hurt himself. James and Lily would, sometimes, have to discipline him. They didn't like to punish Harry, but there were times when a smack on the backside had to be administered

By the time that Harry had outgrown this particular phase, he discovered the wonderful world of books. He also discovered that colouring pictures was great, but it was even better to take the crayon to the wall in the dining room. In short, Lily attempted to encourage a love of reading into him. She made sure that he had a wide range books to read, all of which were in his reading level. His father encouraged him in his mischievous habits.

One night, just after Harry had gone to bed, James sparked a teasing conversation with his lovely wife. “Lily, just where on earth did Harry get his love of books?”

“I believe Harry inherited those traits from his wonderful, caring mother.” James roared with laughter as she put down her book to cross her arms in a huff. She raised an eyebrow at him, “Speaking of Harry's traits, who gave Harry the love of exploration, and getting into every mess that he can manage to find?”

“I believe, my darling, those things came from me. Also, don't forget that Sirius has also encouraged Harry.”

“James Potter, don't you dare remind me of the antics that Sirius got up to with Harry. I still worry about Harry, whenever he goes for a ride on either a broom or a flying motor-bike, I think I'm going to have a heart-attack. Speaking of flying, just when are you going to give Harry that toy broomstick that Albus gave him?”

“Harry is five years old, and now that you mention it, I want to teach him how to ride very soon.”

“Just please be careful when you teach Harry how to fly. I don't want to see Harry get hurt in some way.”

“Don't worry, I'll make sure that Harry is safe, the broom is charmed. It can only go a few feet up into the air, and it can't travel very fast.”

“Alright, I'll leave it up to you to teach him to fly, but if he gets hurt, I'll jinx you into next week. And, you'll be sleeping on the couch for a week, possibly a month.” James just raised his hands up in defeat. He knew that it was useless to argue with his wife.

True to James' word, he was soon teaching, and explaining to, Harry all about riding brooms and the wonderful, wizarding sport of Quidditch.

After showing, and demonstrating, what Harry needed to do, James said, “Now, hold out your right hand and say to the broom `up'. Remember to speak in a clear, precise voice. The broom needs to know who the boss is. Go on, have at it.” With that, James squatted down and looked eagerly at his son. He was anxious to see what the outcome would be.

Harry didn't hesitate to have a go. Harry held out his little hand and said, “Up.” When Harry said that one word, the toy broomstick jumped up into Harry's right hand. Harry excitedly said, “Look Dad, I did it!”

At this, James clapped, “Well done, I knew you could do it. How would you like to have a ride?”

“Yes, please.” James didn't need any more convincing. He demonstrated, and explained, what Harry needed to do to ride his toy broom.

Harry, eager and excited about riding his broom, took off before James was able to charm the broom not to leave the ground. Harry was soon flying about the yard.

As Harry was flying around on his broom, James saw that Harry had inherited his natural ability for flight. Since the broom couldn't go very high or fast, James allowed Harry a couple of moments to fly around on his own. Little did James know that Lily had chosen that time to come outside and see how Harry was doing with his broom.

As soon as Lily saw that Harry was flying on his own, she started screaming at James as she ran to them, “JAMES POTTER, WHY IS HARRY FLYING ON HIS OWN? WHY AREN'T YOU FLYING BESIDE HIM?” At the sound of Lily's voice, James knew that he was in trouble. Since James had experience at evading the truth when he was a Marauder, he decided to act innocent in order to stay in Lily's good graces.

“Lily, dear, as I explained to you earlier, the broom is a very safe toy for Harry. Before he took off, I placed a charm on him to prevent him from falling off. As it is it turns out, he has inherited my natural flying ability, and once he is competent at flying on his own, I plan on teaching Harry how to catch the Golden Snitch. Since he takes after me with flying, I am positive that he has the skills to make a great seeker.”

Lily pulled James to the side by his ear, “That may be the case, but from now on, I want you to fly beside Harry every time that he rides that broom. But, for now, here is a little reminder so that you won't forget.” With that, Lily pointed her wand towards James' backside, jinxing it with a boil.

Seeing that the curse had done its job, Lily continued, “I believe that should do as a reminder. Just so you know, you won't be able to sit down for about twelve hours.”

She smirked at her husband, “Now, you had better come inside because it is starting to get dark, and I don't want Harry flying in bad light.” Lily turned on her heels and headed back inside, leaving James to bring Harry in.

The years went by, and Harry continued to grow. Since Lily was a Muggle-born witch, it was her wish that Harry attend a Muggle school in order to learn how to read, write, and socialize. James, who knew of her desire, completely agreed with Lily's decision. However, James had one concern: Since Harry knew that he was a wizard, how would he manage to keep their secret?

With this thought, James spoke to Lily. “Lily,” he said thoughtfully, “since Harry will be attending a Muggle school, I was wondering how we are going to prevent Harry from giving away details about the wizarding world?”

“I've already explained to Harry that he must be very careful with what he says at school. He understands, and he has promised me that he will do his best. Harry's teacher is a Squib, and if he shows any signs of performing accidental magic, she promised to make contact with us immediately.”

“That's a relief.”

“I'm glad that I could be of help. Now, why don't you run along and play with Harry because once school starts you won't have much time with him.”

“Alright Lils.” James kissed his wife and headed off to find his son.

At the end of Harry's third year elementary school, James and Lily were proud of the report card that they had received from Harry's teacher. Harry had settled well into class, always helping and participating by asking and answering questions. Harry's teacher also said that Harry was well-mannered and that she was looking forward to teaching him next year at school. While the early years aren't graded in exactly the same way as the older students are assessed, the majority of Harry's ticks were placed in the highest column on the report card.

Pleased with Harry for his good marks and behaviour, James decided to reward his son. “Since you have a good report card, and you have kept the wizarding world a secret, how would you like to go and see Puddlemere United play?”

Harry grinned and replied, “I would love too! When are we going?”

“I thought we could go and see the game for your birthday. Does that sound all right, Harry?”

“That sounds great!” Harry said as he hugged his father.

After learning about Quidditch from his dad, Harry had followed the game with eagerness. The team that Harry favoured, and supported, was Puddlemere United. While there were heaps of teams in the competition, Harry was drawn to Puddlemere, partially because when they played, they generally won, and it was James' favourite team as well. Whenever it came to Quidditch season, Lily would just shake her head. Once the season started, she knew that it was going to be difficult to get James or Harry to do a thing until the games were over.

On the morning of Harry's birthday, James entered his son's room early to wake him in order for them to make it to the game on time. Harry's room was decorated with everything that could possibly have Puddlemere United on it. The walls were covered with posters of the team, Harry's bed covers, sheets, and everything else that you can imagine in a kid's bedroom had the Puddlemere logo on it. Seeing that Harry was sound asleep, James made his way over to his son's bed.

Upon reaching his bed, James shook his son and said, “Harry, its time to get up, the game is going to start soon.” At the sound of this, Harry slowly began to stir.

After taking a couple of moments to wake up, Harry mumbled, “It's so early, why did you wake me up?”

“Well, I thought that I would get you out of bed so that I could take you to see the Quidditch game. If you want to stay in bed, and miss the game, that is fine with me.” At the sound of `Quidditch' Harry jumped out of bed. Knowing Harry was finally up, James left Harry's room to allow him to get dressed and ready.

After having the wonderful breakfast that Lily had prepared in honour of Harry's birthday, it was time for James and Harry to leave for the Quidditch game. Lily placed a couple of Glamour Charms onto James and Harry to hide their real identities.

As Lily applied the charms to Harry, Harry questioned, “Why do you keep placing these charms on me every time that we go out into the wizarding world?” He crossed his arms and gave her a level look, “You don't put them on me when I go to school.”

At hearing this question from her son, Lily stopped what she was doing in order to respond to Harry. “Harry, I put Glamour Charms on you every time that you go into the wizarding world because your father and I want you to be treated normally.”

“What do you mean by `normal'?”

“Your normal to us, but, to some people, you are a celebrity, especially in the wizarding world.”

“Are you saying that I am famous?”

“Yes, you are, but for now, I think that you should simply forget all about this because today is your birthday. I am sure that you would rather go and see your favourite team play Quidditch instead of talking about this.”

“Alright, I'll drop this for now, but will you promise that you will explain it to me later?”

“I promise, Harry, but right now it's time for you and your father to be going.” Harry kissed and hugged his mother goodbye.

The game was played between Puddlemere and the Chudley Canons. It ended in a landslide victory to Puddlemere. During the game, Harry cheered on his favourite team with as much enthusiasm as he could muster. Seeing how animated Harry was, James matched his son's eagerness with his cheers.

As the game was being played out, Harry was impressed by the professional moves that the Seekers made. Harry asked, “Dad, do you think that you could teach me some of those moves when we get home?”

“I don't think that your mother would appreciate it if I were teaching you how to fly like the professional players. However, I will ask your mum, but if she says no, I am afraid that you will have to wait until you are older.

“Look, I think that the Puddlemere Seeker has seen the Golden Snitch.” Both Potters returned their focus to the Seeker.

True to James' prediction, the Seeker of Puddlemere had indeed seen the Snitch and was soon right on the little ball's tail. After making several manoeuvres on his broom, the Seeker was able to finally grasp the Golden Snitch. The moment that the Seeker had caught it, both Harry and James were jumping up and down in excitement: their team had won. After taking a few moments to get over the excitement of the game, James and Harry left the stadium and returned home to Nottingham.

Upon returning home, James and Harry were still excited and so occupied with the game, that they failed to notice that Professor Dumbledore had come for Harry's birthday.

As Albus had promised that day in his office, he always turned up for Christmas and Harry's birthday. Every time that Albus came for a visit, Harry was thrilled. Usually, whenever Harry saw Albus, he would usually drop whatever he was doing and rush over to hug his grandfather. Albus would always happily return the hug, while Harry asked, “Did you bring me any presents, Granddad?”

The moment that Harry would say those words, Albus would reply while James and Lily would either laugh or shake their respective heads. “Of course, Harry. Now, let's see what I have brought.”

Once James and Harry had finished talking about the game that they had just watched, Harry heard a very familiar voice say, “Happy birthday, Harry.”

Harry looked up and there, standing in the living room, was Albus Dumbledore. Harry shouted happily, “Grandad Dumbledore!” Harry crossed the living room so that he could hug Albus. He moved so quickly, that Lily would later have sworn that he apparated.

As they hugged each other Albus said, “I suppose you are wondering what your granddad has got for your birthday?”

“Don't I usually say that?”

“Yes, Harry, but after visiting you so many times, I always know what you are going to say. Now, since it's your birthday, here is my gift.” Albus removed from his robes a neatly wrapped rectangular-shaped present. Albus handed the present to Harry.

No sooner had Harry received the present from Albus than he quickly tore the paper off so that he could see what his present was. Once the paper had been removed Harry carefully opened the lid to see what was inside. As he removed the lid, Harry could see that he had received some kind of wand.

Seeing what was in the box, Harry looked up and said, “Does this wand mean that I can perform magic?”

At seeing what was in the box, Lily became concerned. She asked, “Do you think that it a good idea to give Harry a wand?”

Albus quickly explained, before he ended up being jinxed by Lily. “The wand that I gave to Harry for his birthday is a toy wand that I had Ollivander create for Harry.”

“What is so special about this wand?

“Harry's wand is so special, because every time that Harry correctly performs magic correctly with it, a light will come from the tip of it to indicate the magic was right. If a light doesn't appear, then you know that Harry incorrectly performed the spell.” By now, Lily fully understood what the intentions of the wand were.

“So, by giving Harry this wand, he will be able to practice his magic, and James and I won't have to worry that Harry will accidentally hurt himself, like he would with a real wand.”

“Yes, that is the purpose of the wand. I am very impressed that you are as bright as ever.”

At this, Lily smiled while James turned to face Harry and said, “Well, now that you have your own wand, how about I teach you a few tricks and things? Would you like that?”

“James, if you plan to teach Harry anything that has got to do with pranks then you had better change your mind very quickly. I won't allow you to corrupt Harry with all those high jinks that you pulled while you were at Hogwarts.”

“Love, I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing. Actually, I was going to teach Harry a few basic spells so that he can protect himself if anyone tries to jinx him.”

“As long as that is all that you teach Harry, I guess that will be okay. Now, why don't we head into the dining room so that we can have dinner, and Harry can open up the rest of his presents?” With that, Lily led the way to the dining room.

Once Lily was out of hearing range, James quickly whispered into Harry's ears, “Don't tell your mom this, because what she doesn't know can't hurt her, and as a marauder, I would be disappointing Sirius if I didn't teach you a thing or two. Let's head into the dining room so that we can really celebrate your birthday.”

For his birthday, Harry received some new clothes, books, and some of his favourite sweets. After dinner, and the opening of his presents, was over, it was time for Harry to head up to bed. Once he said his goodnights to his parents and to Albus, Harry headed upstairs to bed.

The next couple of years went by, and it was getting close to time for Harry to be going to Hogwarts. Harry did not fully understand why he was so famous, and he did not know the origination of the lightening-shaped scar on his forehead. It was during a trip to Diagon Alley that James, Lily, and Harry had heard a couple of people talking about the Boy Who Lived.

“Do you realise that it has been nearly ten years since You-Know-Who tried to kill little Harry Potter?”

“It's amazing where time goes, but I still can't believe how little Harry survived that Killing Curse.”

“From what have heard, no one knows how he survived it. But, I do know that the only thing that Harry received from that attack was a lightening-shaped scar on his forehead. Although I wouldn't…” It was at that moment that James and Lily decided to return home so and explain everything to Harry.

Harry finally understood everything that his parents had done for him by the time that James and Lily had finished explaining what had happened to Harry. At first, Harry was upset that they didn't tell him the truth earlier, but by the time that they were finished, Harry was able to understand that his parents wanted Harry to be as normal as possible. If there was one thing that did come out of that conversation, it was that both James and Lily promised Harry that there would no longer be any secrets between them.

As Harry's eleventh birthday was fast approaching, James and Lily were planning a special trip for Harry to mark the occasion. Little did the Potter family know, they would be running into some unfriendly members of the family.

Chapter Four: Harry's eleventh Birthday.

Harry's eleventh birthday was approaching, and James and Lily were deciding as to how they should celebrate it. One morning, as James, was reading the daily paper, one particular article caught his attention. His eyes lit up and he smiled; he knew that he had found the perfect thing to do for Harry's birthday.

New Zoo Opens in London

After months of careful planning, and construction, the much awaited zoo has finally been opened in London

What makes this zoo different from any other? This facility has been designed to suit the environment of the animals, and it has been built with the latest technology for helping animals cope to a new environment.

I have paid a visit to the zoo, before it was opened, and from what I could see, the design was impressive. So if you are planning to take your family to the zoo, then I strongly recommend that you visit London's new baby, Animal's World

After completely reading the article, James, voiced his plan to his wife.

“Lily, I think that I have the perfect idea for Harry's birthday.”

“If it's something like last year, then the answer is no. I won't have any of your pranks.”

“I promise, on Marauder honour, that you and Harry will certainly enjoy this idea. Here, take a look at this newspaper article, and tell me that this isn't the perfect idea for Harry's birthday.” With that, James handed the newspaper over to Lily.

As she took the paper, Lily, said, “This had better be a good idea, James, because if it's not I swear that I'll charm your underwear to constantly give you wedgies.” James gulped before, Lily, winked and began to read the article.

When finished reading, Lily happily said, “You know, I think that Harry will enjoy visiting the zoo; he's always liked animals.”

“So, does this mean that we're taking Harry to the zoo?”

“Yes, it does, but if you let it slip that we're planning this, then I will carry out my earlier threat,” Lily playfully joked. “I want this to be a surprise for Harry.”

“Don't worry Lils; I promise that I won't let it slip. I think I'm going to find Harry and see if he'd like to go flying.” James then kissed his wife and headed off to see where his son was.

James and Lily weren't the only people planning a trip to the new zoo in London. One family in particular was also planning a trip. This was headed by a man who went by the name of Vernon Dursley. He was sitting in his office at a place called Grunnings. It was a company that made drills.

Vernon Dursley had just finished reading about the new zoo in the local newspaper, when he had a wonderful thought. Since Vernon was a man who didn't waste time, he quickly dialled his home phone number so that he could talk to his wife, Petunia, about his brilliant idea.

“Hello, Petunia Dursley speaking.”

“Petunia, Dear, it's Vernon. I was just calling to see if you still haven't got anything planned for Dudder's birthday.”

Petunia replied, “No Vernon, I am afraid that I still haven't got any ideas as to what we should do for Dudley's birthday.”

“Since you haven't got anything planned yet, Pet, why don't we take our Dudders to that new zoo that just opened in London.”

“That sounds like a wonderful idea; I am sure that Dudley would like to go to the zoo. He can, of course, invite a friend of his to come along as well.”

“I was just thinking the exact same thing, Pet. Would you like me to book the tickets in advance?”

“Yes please, the sooner the better.”

“In that case, I'll book the tickets now. I'll see you shortly.”

“See you soon, Vernon.” No sooner had Vernon hung up the phone than he was dialling the phone number to the zoo so that he could purchase four tickets.

****

On the morning of Harry's eleventh birthday, Harry woke up feeling all excited. While Harry didn't have a clue as to what James and Lily had planned for his birthday, one thing was certain: grandad Dumbledore's visit. Since Harry was anxious to see what he would receive for his birthday, he quickly got dressed and headed down to have breakfast.

As Harry made his way downstairs, he could smell the food that Lily was busily cooking in the kitchen. Just as he entered the kitchen, Harry heard his parents greet him with, “Happy birthday, Harry.”

Harry replied, “Thanks, Mum and Dad. What did you get me for my birthday?”

At this, both James and Lily laughed. James said, “You always ask what we are going to give you for your birthday, even before we have had breakfast!”

“Harry, before you get the opportunity to open any presents, I think that you should eat, don't you?”

“Yes, Mum, you're right as always,” Harry flattered.

“That's what I like to hear, Harry. Now, everyone to the table and breakfast shall be served.” James, Lily, and Harry headed to the dining room so that they could have breakfast on this wonderful and exciting day.

After breakfast, James and Lily thought that it was time to inform Harry of the plans they had for his birthday.

“Harry, as part of your birthday present, your father and I have decided to take you to that new zoo in London. I know that you are fond of animals and…” Before Lily could finish her sentence, Harry hugged his mum.

James smugly said, “Lily, I told you that going to that zoo would be the perfect gift for Harry.”

“Yes, you were right. Now, if we still want to go to the zoo then we had better be going or we'll be late.”

“In that case, if we're all ready, let's go. Harry, hold tightly onto my hand. I'll Side-Along Apparate you to the zoo.” Harry grasped his dad's hand so that they could Apparate. As soon as James felt his son's tight grip, he said, “Ok Harry, on three. One, two, three.”

The moment that James said three, James and Harry disappeared from sight. Seeing that her husband and son had Apparated away Lily grabbed her handbag, and she Apparated to the zoo.

James, Lily, and Harry appeared in front of the new zoo. From where they were standing, the Potter family could see that the zoo was indeed new, and to their utter surprise, it was big.

James exclaimed, “Blimey, it's huge, and I am glad that I came up with the idea to come here for Harry's birthday. So, shall we?” James led his family toward the entrance so that they could purchase their tickets. Once the tickets were paid for, James, Lily, and Harry set out to enjoy the day. ( This paragraph is a comma fiesta!)

As the day went by, the Potter family took in the sights, and smells, of the animals. Each species corralled in specific enclosures. For each different kind of animal that the zoo had, the zoo had designed a specific environment for them. The enclosures' were meant to accommodate what could be found in the wild. Well, at least that's what Harry read from a sign above each area.

By lunch time, James, Lily, and Harry had visited several animals. Some of the animals that they saw were lions, tigers, and big cats of all kind. They also saw monkeys, giraffes, crocodiles, and, of course, the elephants.

For lunch, it was decided that they would eat in the zoo restaurant. While they were looking over the menus, out of the corner of her eye, Lily caught a glimpse of a lady who seemed to be very familiar. For an instant, she thought that the lady she had seen resembled her sister. However, before she could convince herself that the lady she had just seen was her sister, the waitress approached the table to take their orders. Once James, Lily, and Harry had placed their orders, the conversation drifted. Harry looked at the guidebook, while Lily thought about the possibility of seeing her sister.

Noticing that something was bothering his wife, James asked in concern, “Lily, is something troubling you?”

“I'm fine, but now that you mention it, just a moment ago I could have sworn that I saw Petunia. While I am not one hundred percent certain that the lady was my sister, the lady did resemble her.”

“If you're not sure that the lady is your sister, then I wouldn't worry about it, Lily; she isn't worth the time of day. Besides, today is Harry's day, so don't let that appearance get you down.”

“I won't, James, you can rest assured that it won't.”

“That's good to hear.” James put an arm around his wife as he looked up. “Oh, look, here comes our lunch.” No sooner were those words said than the waitress brought the Potter family their meals.

After having a wonderful, and delicious, lunch, the Potters resumed their tour of the zoo. The last main area that they had yet to visit was the reptile house. It was at the reptile enclosure that really made the day for Harry; he was going to have some fun.

Upon entering the reptile enclosure, James, Lily, and Harry could see that there were heaps of people looking at the animals. Seeing large number of people that had gathered already, it was decided that they would take their time in seeing each reptile.

As they slowly made their way down the walkway, James, Lily, and Harry could see that there were many glass panels lining the walkway. Behind the glass, there was the large collection of snakes, lizards, and other reptiles that the zoo displayed. Everything was going well in the reptile area until Harry heard a boy complaining about this and that. At the sound of the complaining, Harry headed in the direction of the boy so that he could see what was up. Just as he neared the whining boy, Harry heard the boy demand:

“Dad, make this snake move!”

A huge man who was the father of the boy stepped up to the glass and said in a gruff voice, “Move.”

No sooner were those words said than the man tapped his hand on the glass. In imitation of his father, the boy slammed his hand on the glass as well. Seeing that the banging was doing nothing to make the snake move, the boy said, “This is boring; the snake won't even move.”

“Come on, Dudley. Let's move on and see the other reptiles that they have on display.”

As the family moved away, Harry approached the glass panel so that he could see for himself what creature the boy and his father tried to make move. Reaching the display, Harry could see that it was a boa constricta. The moment that Harry was standing in front of the snake he said:

“Sorry about those two. They don't seem to understand that the only thing that you do is just lay in your enclosure day after day without having to do much.” While Harry said those words, the snake instantly looked towards Harry. When he saw the snake look at him, Harry's jaw dropped in amazement. Harry quickly, and eagerly, continued.

“How can you understand me?” Harry inquired.

“I understand your speech, human child, because you are a Parselmouth.”

“Parselmouth?”

“You speak Parseltongue: the language used to commune with snakes. Not many possess this rare gift, but, as for those other humans, I don't let them bother me: I always ignore them.”

“Do you like living here in the zoo?”

“It is alright here, but I would rather be in Brazil where my brothers and sisters live.”

“How did you end up here?”

“I was slithering my way home from having a wonderful feast when I sensed that danger was nearby. The moment that I realized this, I slid across the ground as fast as I could, but before I could reach my home, I was caught by human men. I would do anything in the world to return once again to my home in Brazil.”

While Harry and the snake were talking to each other, Dudley thought that it might be a good idea to see if he could get the snake to move again. The moment that he turned his head to see what was happening, Dudley was shocked to see that a boy who seemed to be about his own age had made the snake move. Seeing this, he tugged on his father's sleeve.

Dudley exclaimed, “Look Dad! That boy with the black messy hair has made the snake move.”

Vernon turned to face the direction that Dudley was indicating. Wanting to see with his own eyes, Vernon replied, “Come on, Dudley let's go and see this for ourselves.” Dudley raced towards where Harry was standing, with his father in tow.

Harry was happily talking with the snake; this was the first time that he ever had a conversation with a reptile. The snake had just finished explaining his wish when Harry was pushed aside by the boy who had been trying to make the snake move.

No sooner had he been pushed aside than Harry became annoyed. If there was one thing that Harry couldn't stand in the world, it was being pushed aside by rude people. Seeing that this boy was indeed one of those things, and had performed the other, Harry thought that he would teach this boy a few manners. With that, Harry turned his focus toward the glass panel where the snake and the boy were.

Dudley was leaning over the panel and making a fine mess of himself when the glass that was in the panel suddenly vanished. A surprised, and shocked, Dudley fell into the water, while, at the same time, the boa constrictor slithered out from his enclosure.

No sooner was the snake free, than chaos reigned in the reptile house. Women and children screamed, and the crowd rushed toward the exits. During all of this the snake whispered to Harry:

“Thank you, my friend, for freeing me.”

“It was my pleasure.”

“Goodbye, my friend. Brazil, here I come!” With that, the snake set out to make his way back to Brazil.

While all of the excitement was going on, James and Lily were happily looking at each reptile. However, as soon as they heard word of an escaped snake, James and Lily quickly headed in the direction of where the snake had come from; they both had an eerie feeling that Harry may have been involved in the fiasco.

Their intuitions were soon proved to be right. As they approached Harry, both James and Lily could see that a man had a hold of Harry, while a woman was yelling out in a loud voice about her Dudders.

Quickly taking in the sight that was before their eyes, James yelled out, “If you don't let go of my son this minute, sir, I can guarantee that you shall regret ever laying a hand on my boy.”

At the sound of James' voice, Vernon replied, “Why should I let go of this brat considering what he just did to my child?”

It was Lily who replied to Vernon's question, “Because, Vernon Dursley, I can do far worse things to you compared to what Harry has just done.”

“How is it that you know my name, ma'am, when I don't ever recall knowing yours?”

“The answer to that question, Vernon, is that you married my sister: Petunia Evans.” Lily turned and addressed Petunia. “Hello Petunia, how are you?”

Petunia, who hadn't been paying any attention at all to the conversation, was shocked to hear a very familiar voice. The moment that Petunia recognised the voice of her sister, she turned around and shouted, “LOOK AT WHAT YOUR FREAKISH SON HAS DONE TO MY BABY-BOY!”

Lily replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm and shaking with anger, “It is so nice to see you again, Petunia, BUT THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT OR HURL INSULTS AT HARRY!” James placed a hand on Lily's shoulder, so that he could get his wife to calm down.

Once Lily was more composed, James continued, “Petunia, I am sure that there is a perfect explanation as to how to how your precious and spoiled Dudley ended up being inside of the glass panel.”

“How dare you say such things about my Dudley? Look at your own son! He's nothing but a freak and a no-good-doer.”

Lily became defensive, but remained calm. “I'll have you know, Petunia, that Harry is a very well-behaved boy who is very loving and compassionate. Now, if we can all remain calm why don't we give both Harry and Dudley a chance to explain what really happened. In order to do that, I am willing to get Dudley out from behind the glass panel, provided that Vernon releases Harry.”

Petunia glanced at Dudley who was still behind the glass and sitting in the water, and then turned her gaze to her husband and nephew. Realising she didn't have a choice, Petunia said, “Very well, Vernon, shall release your son as soon as Dudley is out of the water, but Dudley must come first, is that clear?”

“If that is what you want, Petunia, then that is how it shall be done.” Lily looked around to see if there were any Muggles present. Seeing that the coast was clear, Lily, with a quick flick of her wand, soon had Dudley out of the water and the enclosure. Vernon let go of Harry, so that he could return to James and Lily.

No sooner was the exchange completed than Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley fled from the reptile house before they could listen to the freakish lies that Harry would tell about their precious Dudley.

As they made the run for it, Harry yelled out, “Hey, don't you want to hear how Dudley ended up in the water!”

“By the looks of things, Harry, I don't think that they're interested, and quite frankly, the only thing that I want to say to them is good riddance. I hope that I never see them again.”

“James, that isn't a nice thing to say about my family, but after today, I have to agree with you. Now, if you don't mind, let's go home. I, for one, would like to leave this place. Besides, someone is due to visit soon.”

Harry shouted, “Grandad Dumbledore is coming, isn't he Mum?”

“Yes, Harry, he's coming, but if you want to greet him on time, we had best be going.”

“In that case, let's head home and get cleaned up a bit.” With that, James, Lily, and Harry headed toward the front gate. Once they had passed through the gate, and made sure that the coast was clear, James, Lily, and Harry Apparated back to Nottingham.

****

Harry was just finishing setting the table when there was a knock on the front door. At the sound of the knock, Harry stopped what he was doing and raced to open the door. However, before he reached the door, Harry heard his mum gently chide, “Don't run inside of the house, Harry.”

“Sorry Mum.” At this, James chuckled while Lily glared at her husband, as she kept an eye on dinner.

Upon reaching the front door, Harry quickly yanked it open so that he could greet his granddad. Yet again,, as promised, Albus had come to Harry's birthday.

“Granddad Dumbledore!” Harry shouted as he hugged his honorary grandfather.

Albus replied, “Happy birthday Harry, and I must congratulate you for reaching the age of eleven.”

“Thank you, Grandad. So what present did you bring me this year?”

“Harry, I believe that the present that I have brought you is will certainly excite you. Right now, I think its time for dinner because I can sense that you mother is dishing it up even as I speak.”

“You are indeed correct, Albus, as always. If you'll take your seats, we can start.”

The four took their customary places at the table.

For dinner, Lily decided that she would cook some of Harry's favourites. Some of the dishes that were prepared were roast chicken and lamb, potatoes in jackets, fresh corn on the cob, honey flavoured carrots, pumpkin, and green beans. For dessert, there was chocolate mud cake, that Harry loved, served with ice cream, custard, or cream. To drink, there was fire whiskey, butter beer, and, for Albus, a bottle of Rosmerta's mead.

Dinner was a lovely affair for everyone, and after James, Lily, and Albus had sung `Happy Birthday' to Harry, it was soon time for presents. Since Harry would be attending Hogwarts come September the first, Lily decided that it would best to purchase his presents from Diagon Alley when they went to purchase his school supplies.

With this decision made, Lily spoke, “Now that the cake has been eaten, I believe that it's time for presents. Harry, for your birthday, your father and I have decided that when we go to pick up your school supplies, you may choose one present for your birthday.”

“That's alright with me, Mum, but what to I get to choose from?”

“You can either have an animal, or a new brand new broomstick. Which ever you choose, your father and I expect you to take care of it.”

“Don't worry, I promise that I will take extra care with whatever I choose. So, what present do you have for me, Grandad?”

“Harry, I believe that my present is something that you have been expecting for sometime.” Albus dug into his robes so that he could find Harry's present. Once he had the envelope in his hand, Albus withdrew his hand and gave it to Harry. As he handed it over to Harry, Albus spoke:

“Here you go, Harry. I expect that this should make your day.”

Once Harry had the envelope in his hand, he carefully opened it up to see what was inside. To his surprise, he saw a piece of parchment inside. Harry eagerly removed the paper and began reading.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Dear Mr Potter,

It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been accepted to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

With this letter, you will find enclosed a list of all the school things that you will be required to bring for your first year at Hogwarts.

School starts on September the First. In order to come to Hogwarts, you will need to catch the Hogwarts Express from platform nine and three quarters. The train leaves at eleven a.m. sharp, so don't be late.

We look forward to seeing you at Hogwarts on the First of September.

Yours truly

Albus Dumbledore

Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry, out of the option of the broomstick or animal I shall be more than delighted to purchase one of them. If I may make a suggestion, Harry, allow me to buy you an owl for your birthday. I shall have a friend meet you on the day that you go shopping and with his help you can select the right animal.

After reading the letter, Harry happily said, “Thank you, Granddad, and I am sure that with the help of your friend, I will be able to purchase the right pet. I think a nice owl would be the perfect gift.”

“An owl would be perfect for you, Harry. Not only are owls friendly, but I have found them to be very useful to deliver mail.”

“Well by the sounds of things, Harry, it looks like we are going to be purchasing a new broom for you. Of course you are going to have the latest and best model. Albus, what is the latest broom that has come out for sale?”

“James, I believe that the Nimbus 2000 is the latest broom model to arrive at Quality Quidditch Supplies.”

“In that case, the broom that we shall buy for your birthday is a Nimbus. How do you like the sound of that, Harry?”

“If a Nimbus broom is what Grandad thinks that we should purchase, then that is the choice I would make.”

“Good, then it's settled. The sooner we get it, the sooner you can ride it.”

“I suppose that you would like to go to Diagon Alley tomorrow so that you can purchase Harry's broom, James?”

“Actually, Lily, why don't we make a full day of it, and while we're at it, we can purchase all of Harry's school things.”

“What time can we go to Diagon Alley?”

Seeing that James and Harry wanted to go to Diagon Alley, Lily shrugged her shoulders and said, “Alright, we can go tomorrow, but the amount of time that you boys spend in the Quidditch store is the exact same amount of time that Harry and I get to spend in Flourish and Blott's.”

“That sounds alright to me, Mum; I love both books and flying.”

“While I'm not so fond of the bookstore, I think that's only fair,” James agreed.

“Good, now that that's settled, I shall have Hagrid meet you in Diagon Alley around ten tomorrow morning. Does that time suit you?”

“Ten is fine, Albus, and if I know these two,” Lily pointed at James and Harry, “they'll either want to sleep in or go flying before we go shopping.”

“In that case, ten it is, and now, if you don't mind, I had best take my leave because I still have a number of things that I need to attend to.”

“That's alright, Albus, and thanks for coming.”

“It's always a pleasure.” With that James, Lily, and Harry said their goodbyes to Albus so that he could return to Hogwarts.

Once Albus had departed, Lily spoke, “Since we are going to Diagon Alley tomorrow, I think that it's high time for someone to be heading up to bed. Wouldn't you agree, Harry?”

“Yes, Mum.” Harry hugged and kissed his parents, and he quickly headed upstairs to bed.

Once Harry was gone, James, wrapped his arms around Lily and said, “You know what, Lily? I think we've done an excellent job raising Harry, considering everything.”

“I know, but I wish that we could have given Harry a brother or sister to play with. It's just that…”

“Hush, love, while there's nothing that we can do now, let's just be thankful for what we have. Now, let's head upstairs because tomorrow is going to be another long day.” With that, James led his wife up to there bedroom so that they could have a good night's sleep.

A/N: The time has come to ask you all a question. How shall I handle Ron in this story? Should I treat Ron normally or should I anti-Ron? If you can shine some light on the matter, then I would greatly appreciate your views, and opinions, about the character of Ron in relation to this story.

Chapter Five: Diagon Alley

“Harry, James, if you two are ready, it's time to go.”

“On my way, Mum.”

“Be down in a minute, love.”

Today was going to be a very busy day for the Potters; they were all heading into Diagon Alley to purchase Harry's school supplies for the upcoming school year. Since Harry would need to buy a whole lot of things, Lily wanted to make an early

she knew that it was going to be a very long day. Once James and Harry had finally managed to make their way downstairs Lily spoke:

“Now that you two slow pokes are here, we can now go. Before we go though, I'd like to discuss what kind of reception we might expect today, or should I say the reception that Harry will be receiving.”

“Lily, I don't think that we have to worry about that. Harry knows that he may have to deal with the public and if anyone tries anything I am sure that we can handle the situation. Now, if you are ready then we should be going.”

“Really, James, are you going to rush out into Diagon Alley and show the world that `Harry Potter' has returned?”

“I have no intention of doing what you just said and the last thing that I would ever do is place Harry in danger.”

“Alright, if you don't think that Harry needs to be warned then that is fine by me but if we have any trouble at all than I can guarantee that you shall be sleeping on the couch, is that clear?”

“Don't worry, Lily; I'll make sure that Harry has no trouble with the public.”

“See that you do, James. Now, Harry, if you will grasp my hand than I shall Apparate the two of us to Diagon Alley.” With that said, Harry, took his mother's hand and the two of them Apparated away with James following close behind.

With a sound of a soft pop and a car backfiring, Lily, Harry, and James appeared in Charing Cross Road near that famous pub, the Leaky Cauldron. The moment that James, Lily, and Harry, they quickly headed in the direction of the pub.

It didn't take them long to reach the Leaky Cauldron because James and Lily were able to appear a few doors down from the entrance. Approaching the entrance to the pub, Harry could see a sign that had a lady stirring something in what appeared to be a cauldron and below the picture Harry could make out the words `THE LEAKY CAULDRON'.

Before Harry could comment on what he was seeing, James said, “Ah, it has been a while since I've been to this place. Lily, do you remember the last time we were here?”

“I believe that our last visit here was just before we had to go into hiding. If you don't mind, James, I would rather go inside than stand here talking on the footpath. Wouldn't you agree?”

“Sorry, Lily, and yes you are right. If you please, ladies and Harry, first.”

“Alright, you don't need to go over board. Stay close to me, Harry.”

“Don't worry, Mum, I'm right behind you,” Harry assured her as Lily led the way into the pub.

Upon entering the Leaky Cauldron, from what Harry could see, the pub was dark and shabby. The first thing that Harry noticed once he was able to get a good look at the place was that there was a bar, tables, chairs and at the tables there were heaps of people who seemed to be either drinking, having a chat, or reading the Daily Prophet.

Since no one was paying any attention at all to the Potter family, they quickly made their way toward the back door so that they could head into Diagon Alley. However, before they could reach the back entrance, the proprietor of the Leaky Cauldron, Tom, noticed James, Lily, and Harry.

Seeing that he had missed some customers, Tom said, “Sir, would you and your family like to have a drink before you head into Diagon Alley?”

“No thanks, Tom, but if you will excuse me, Lily, Harry, and I have got a lot of things to purchase since Harry will be starting school come September.”

“In that case, don't let me detain you! If you have time later, do drop by and I'll be happy to serve you.” Tom headed back to the bar while the Potters headed to the door. No sooner had Tom turned away from the customers than he quickly spun around and said, “James, Lily, it is so good to see you after all these years and bless my soul, it's Harry Potter. Look everyone, the Potter family has returned.”

At the sound of those words, everyone in the pub instantly stopped what they were doing and turned to see where Tom and the Potters were standing. The moment that the patrons of the pub could see for themselves that James, Lily, and Harry, were indeed in the Leaky Cauldron, they quickly got up and rushed toward them, excitedly welcoming them back.

However, before the crowd could reach them, James pulled out his wand and said, “If you all can't control yourselves in a suitable fashion, then I shall be forced to jinx you and trust me, you don't want to experience what I am capable of doing.”

Hearing of the prospect of being jinxed, everyone started to get a grip on themselves because the last thing that they wanted to do was to upset the Potters. Once everything had calmed down, James continued.

“Now that you have settled down, we would be more than happy to greet some of you. Before I even allow you to approach Harry, I want you to know that he doesn't like being famous, but he understands that he has to deal with it. So please don't rush forward, and please keep in mind what I have just said.”

“Don't worry, James, if any of my patrons tries to harm Harry, then he or she will be thrown out of my pub and shall be banned for a period of time. Since I am the proprietor of the pub, I shall be the first one to greet Harry.” With that said, Tom stepped forward and greeted Harry.

Following after Tom, several other patrons of the bar approached Harry so that they could greet and shake his hand. Among those who greeted Harry were Doris Crockford and Dedalus Diggle. Harry heard phrases like, “It's a pleasure to meet you at last, Mr, Potter,” and “I am honored and delighted to meet you, Harry.”

After allowing everyone a couple of moments to meet their son, James and Lily decided that it was time for them to be moving on. Lily addressed the crowd, “Everyone, I am afraid that it is time that we moved on; we have a lot to do today.”

At hearing this, Tom said, “Lily, I am sure that everyone understands and as part of welcoming you back to the wizarding world, the next round is on the house.” The patrons cheered and rushed toward the bar and while they were distracted, James, Lily, and Harry crept out the back door so that they could finally enter Diagon Alley.

The Potters stopped in front of a brick wall behind the Leaky Cauldron. At the sight of the wall, Harry didn't have a foggy clue as to why it would be there. However, Harry's question was soon to be answered.

Lily said, “Harry, pay close attention to what I am about to do because one day you may need to this yourself.”

“What do you mean by that, Mum?”

“Just watch what your mother is doing, Harry, because you are in for quite a surprise.”

Lily promptly tapped a brick with her wand. Harry watched in awe as the brick wall formed into an archway. No sooner had the bricks finished moving aside than Harry could see that behind the wall was busy alley with shops. Harry quickly turned to face his parents, the expression on his face asking the question for him.

James explained, “Harry, this is Diagon Alley, where you can purchase all of your school supplies. What do you think of it?”

“I think that this place will be a great place to shop. So what shop will we be going to first?”

“Well, since we are going to need money to purchase all of your school supplies, Harry, our first destination is Gringotts, the wizard bank,” Lily answered.

“In that case, Mum, let's get going!” James and Lily exchanged an amused look at Harry's enthusiasm, and then quickly led the way to Gringotts.

Walking down the main street of Diagon Alley was an exciting experience for Harry. From what he could see, there were heaps of shops that lined each side of the street. Since Harry didn't have any idea as to where the bank was, he simply stuck by his parents' sides so that he wouldn't get lost. Not before too long, all three Potters were standing outside of Gringotts.

As they entered the bank, Harry could see that there were hundreds of creatures, all working and managing the bank. At the sight of these strange but fascinating creatures Harry asked his parents, “Mum, Dad, what kind of person runs the bank?”

Lily replied, “These are goblins, Harry. While they can be friendly, it is best to not upset them. Just stick close to your father and me and you'll be fine.”

During this conversation, they walked down the aisle so that they could find an empty counter. After finding one, James, approached the counter and said, “James, Lily, and Harry Potter, would like to make a withdrawal from the Potter family vault and show Harry his trust account.”

“Do you have the keys to the vaults, sir?” At this, James removed two keys from his pocket so that he could show the goblin. After taking a quick look at the keys, the goblin continued, “They seem to be in order. Griphook, please escort the Potter family down to their family and trust vaults.”

At the sound of his name, Griphook stepped forward and said, “If you will follow me, I shall be delighted to escort you to your vaults.” Since they didn't want to upset Griphook, James, Lily and Harry, quickly followed after their escort.

Before too long, Harry and James were happily enjoying the cart ride that the goblins used to escort people to their respective bank vaults. The cart ride was very similar to the roller coaster rides at an amusement park. Unfortunately for Harry and James, the cart stopped before they could really enjoy the ride.

Griphook announced, “Vault number 86, the Potter family vault.” Griphook quickly got out of the cart as did the Potters.

Once everyone was standing in front of the vault door, James handed the vault key over to Griphook so that he could unlock the door. At the sound of the lock being unlocked, Griphook took a step back, allowing James to open the door. As the door swung open, Harry, for the first time in his life, couldn't believe how much money was inside of the vault.

Seeing the look on his son's face, James said, “As you can see, Harry, the Potter family is indeed pretty well set up with money. Just so that you know, Harry, you could easily live off this and not have to work if you wanted to.”

“James, I think that you have flabbergasted Harry with all of this, so why don't we withdraw and continue on; we have got a lot of things that need to be purchased,” Lily pressed.

James didn't need to be told twice, so he withdrew from his pocket several money bags and quickly filled them up with Galleons, Sickles and Knuts. After ensuring that they had more than enough money, the Potters returned to the cart while Griphook waved his hand and the vault door slammed shut. Griphook removed the key and resumed his seat in the cart before they began the breakneck ride to the trust vault.

At the trust vault, James and Lily explained to Harry that this was his own personal vault. While there wasn't as much money in the trust vault compared to what was in the family one, Harry was told that he could spend it on whatever he liked but he had to be careful that he didn't waste it on anything. After asking his parents how much money he should withdraw, Harry, made a small withdrawal so that he could have money to spend whenever he wanted to. Once the transactions were completed, James, Lily, Harry, and Griphook got back into the cart one final time and they returned to the lobby of the bank.

Exiting from the bank, James led his family toward all the shops that they needed to visit. The first shop was a place where people could purchase trunks, since Harry would need a trunk for Hogwarts.

In the trunk shop, Harry could see that there was a wide range of trunks to choose from. Since the trunk was mainly for Hogwarts, he decided on getting a three compartment trunk. As he looked at each of the trunks, Harry's eye caught the colour of a red and orange one. Harry immediately said, “Mum, Dad, if it's alright with you, may I please have that red and gold coloured trunk?” At this, James and Lily went to have a look at the trunk that their son was indicating.

The trunk that Harry wanted was a three compartment that would be more than suitable for his needs. As for the compartments, the first one was suitable for storing books and school supplies. The second was used for clothes and the third was an area adequate to store personal items. Apart from the three compartments, the trunk came with a book bag, an overnight bag, and it also had a few locking curses on it so no one would be able force entry.

James said, “Harry, you have indeed chosen wisely and I must say that I love your choice of having a red and gold trunk.” James picked up the trunk that and headed toward the counter to could pay for it. Once the transaction was completed, they left the shop and headed for their next destination: Madam Malkin's Robes For All Occasions.

Entering the robe shop, James, Lily, and Harry discovered that the ladies of the shop were extremely busy dealing with customers. Seeing how busy the shop really was, Lily was considering leaving and returning later when the owner of the shop said, “How may I serve you today?”

“Harry is about to start his first year at Hogwarts and he is in need of a couple of sets of robes.”

“Well if it's just school robes that you need, please follow me and I'll see what I can do. While I am seeing to your son, you are more than welcome to browse the store.”

“Thank you, I am sure that James and I will appreciate the opportunity to look at new robes.” James and Lily, went off to browse through the shop while Harry went with the lady to be measured for his robes. As Harry's measurements were being taken, he found himself standing beside a blonde haired boy.

The moment that the blonde haired boy saw Harry he said, “Are you going to Hogwarts too?”

“Yes, I am and I must say that I'm looking forward to going there.”

“What house do you think that you will be in? I know that I'm going to be in Slytherin.”

“If I had to make a choice, I would choose Gryffindor. Both of my parents were in Gryffindor and if I am like my parents, I don't think that I would have any difficulty getting into that house.”

“Are your parents pureblood, or are they Muggle-born? My father thinks that they shouldn't let the rift raft into Hogwarts.” By now, Harry, was starting to dislike the blonde haired boy. After only a few minutes of conversation, he found him to be rude, arrogant, and most of all he seemed to be a bully. A few more words from the boy proved that he was indeed a bully.

“I think that it's very rude of someone to ask another person who their parents are. Just so that you know, my parents are a witch and wizard.”

“Do you play Quidditch, own your own broomstick, and what team do you support? I think that's it unfair for first years to not take their own brooms to school. I might bully Father into allowing me to take my own broom.”

“My dad has taught me how to ride a broom and I must say that I am a natural. As part of my birthday present my parents are going to be buying me a brand new broom and the Quidditch team that I support is Puddlemere United.”

“What kind of broom are you going to buy?”

Before Harry could respond to that question, Madam Malkin returned and said, “Here are your Hogwarts robes.”

“Thank you, ma'am, and I appreciate that you made them as quickly as you possibily could.”

“Why thank you, young man, and I must say that you are very sweet.” With that, Madam Malkin handed the neatly wrapped robes to Harry. As soon as Harry had the robes in his hands he headed back to his parents while Malkin returned her attention to the blonde haired boy.

Harry found both of his parents sitting in seats while they were waiting for him to return. James and Lily spent a little time looking at the robes that Malkin had for sale but they decided that they would return to the shop to purchase a new wardrobe after sending Harry off to Hogwarts. Seeing their son approaching them with his robes in his hands, they got up from their seats.

No sooner had Harry reached his parents than Lily spoke, “Have you finished getting your new robes, Harry?”

“Yes Mum, I am finished and they have been neatly wrapped up by Madam Milkin herself.”

“Well in that case, why don't you place them into your trunk so that they won't get crushed and once you have done that our next stop is Flourish and Blotts.”

As James carefully placed Harry's robes inside of his trunk he said, “I thought that Quality Quidditch Supplies was next on our list? We did agree that however long we stayed in Quality, we had to spend the exact same time in Flourish. Am I right, Harry?” James turned to look at Harry so that he could verify the agreement.

“Yes Dad, it is true that Mum did agree to what you just said, but if you don't mind I would rather go to Flourish and Blotts first. We already know what we are getting at the Quidditch store, but it may take a little longer to find all my school text books. Besides, don't you want to spend some quality time looking up either prank books or magazines that deal with Puddlemere United.”

At the mention of these two ideas, James instantly said, “Harry, I believe that you have hit the mark. If you and your mother are ready, then we shall now head off to Flourish and Blotts.” James first shrunk Harry's trunk before hurriedly leading the way to the book store so that he could see what kind of things that he could get up to without getting into Lily's bad books.

In the book store, it took quite a while for Harry to find all of his school textbooks: Flourish and Blotts placed the books under several sections. Since, Harry, had to browse through all the sections of the book store, it took some time to find all of the books that he would need for his first year.

Once Harry had finally found of the books that he needed, he set about finding some books that he might be interested in reading. During his own private search, Harry chose the latest edition of Hogwarts A History which was no surprise to him considering that he had read that kids' version to death. One of the books that Harry bought for himself was Curses and Counter-Curses by Vindictus Viridian. Harry had just taken that book from the shelf when he heard his father say,

“Harry is there a reason as to why you are buying that book?”

“Dad, the reason that I want this book…” Harry began and then told his dad all about that blonde haired boy he met in Madam Malkin's.

By the time that Harry had finished his story James said, “By the sounds of things, Harry, this boy is nothing but a spoiled pureblood who thinks that he can have everything his own way. If he causes you trouble, please use one of these curses to hex him with and make sure that you send me a letter to tell me what happened. While I'm at it, you had better give me that book to look after because if your mother sees you buying that book I can guarantee that she won't be happy with you at all.”

“That's alright, Dad, and I am sure that you can return it to me before I go to Hogwarts,” Harry said as he handed the book to his dad for safekeeping.

Following on from the Flourish and Blotts, the next couple of stores that the Potters visited were the Stationary, Apothecary and Cauldron Shop where they could purchase Harry's quills, ink, sheets of parchment, potions supplies, and a cauldron and tools to brew Potions. Still continuing on, they paid a short visit to Quality Quidditch Supplies so that they could purchase Harry's Nimbus 2000 that James and Lily were going to give Harry for his birthday.

In the Quidditch shop, the sales person couldn't believe the order that James asked for. “Good morning, how may I be of assistance to you?”

“I was wondering if I could purchase that Nimbus 2000 that you have in your window for my son, Harry.”

At the sound of hearing that James wanted the Nimbus, the sales person said, “Are you sure that you want to purchase a Nimbus 2000? They are very expensive.”

“Yes, I am sure that I want to buy that broom and don't worry about the price because money isn't an issue for me.”

“Well in that case, give me a couple of moments to collect the broom from the window and I shall wrap it up for you.”

As the sales clerk approached the window to collect the Nimbus 2000, she saw that there were a number of people gazing in and looking at the broom. The moment that the broom was lifted up from the stand, the crowd of people standing outside couldn't believe that the broom was being taken away. Seeing what was happening in the shop, the crowd started to disburse because it was no good standing around to look at the newest broom considering it had just been brought.

Returning to the counter with the broom, the clerk quickly wrapped it up in brown paper so that it wouldn't be damaged. Once this was done she handed the broom over to Harry while James gave her the price that was on the tag.

However, before Harry could get too excited with his new broom Lily said, “I think that I had better shrink it down and place it into your trunk until we get home.”

At this, Harry tried to protest but after a quick stern look from his mother, Harry quickly said, “Alright, Mum, and I guess that you are right.”

With a quick wave with her wand, Lily, shrunk the broom and it was carefully placed into Harry's trunk with the rest of his purchases. Once the broom was safely placed away the Potters continued on with only a couple of shops left to visit.

The next shop that James and Lily decided to visit was Eeylops Owl Emporium. As they headed toward the shop, James and Lily could see in the distance a very familiar figure that they hadn't seen for a very long time. Before either James or Lily could even send a word of greeting to their friend, the man stopped looking at the owls and spotted James and Lily.

The tall figure spoke, “James, Lily, good ter see you again.”

At hearing their friends' voice James replied, “It's good to see you as well, Hagrid.” James, Lily, and Harry, quickly made their way over to where Hagrid was standing. The moment that James and Lily reached Hagrid, Hagrid pulled his two friends into a hug.

Before Hagrid could squeeze all of the air out of their lungs Lily said, “If you don't mind, Hagrid, James and I would like to breath if it's alright.”

Instantly Hagrid pulled back and said, “Sorry about that, Lily, but I'm just happy to see you two again.”

“That's alright, the feelings are mutual. What are you doing here in Diagon Alley?”

“Professor Dumbledore has sent me here on official Hogwarts business but he also instructed me to help choose an owl that would be suitable for Harry.”

“Have you found an owl that you think that Harry would like, Hagrid?”

“I think that I have, Lily, but if you don't me, asking where is Harry?” Lily, who had completely forgot all about Harry, quickly brought him forward so that she could introduce him to Hagrid.

The moment that Hagrid could see Harry, Lily said, “Hagrid, this is our son, Harry. Harry, this is Hagrid.”

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Hagrid.”

“Thank you, Harry. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Hogwarts.”

“Do you live at Hogwarts, Hagrid?”

“Actually, Harry, I am the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts, and yes I live at Hogwarts. Once you have settled into Hogwarts I'll invite you down to my hut so that we can have a spot of tea and while we're at it, a chat as well. D'you like the sound of that, Harry?”

“Yes, Hagrid, I look forward to it.”

“Good, now that's settled let me show you the owl that I think that you will really like.” With that, Hagrid led James, Lily, and Harry into the shop.

A couple of moments later, Hagrid was showing to Harry an owl that was snowy white. The instant that Harry looked into the eyes of the owl a bond suddenly formed between them.

Before anyone knew what was happening Harry said, “Hedwig. The name for my snowy white owl shall be Hedwig.” Instantly Hedwig hooted in agreement with the name that Harry said.

Hearing the hoot, Lily said, “I think that Hedwig is the perfect name for your owl, Harry, considering that she is a girl.”

Harry turned to face his Mum and asked, “Mum, how do you know that Hedwig is a female owl?”

“Harry, let's just say it's a mother's guess but if you want to, why don't you ask Hedwig herself?”

Harry quickly returned his attention to Hedwig and said, “Are you a girl owl, Hedwig?” For the second time Hedwig happily hooted in response.

This time it was James who spoke. “It looks like your mother was correct, Harry, and I must say that with Hagrid's help you have chosen a very special bird.”

“Couldn't've said it better meself, James, but if you'll excuse me, I must be returning to Hogwarts; Professor Dumbledore will want to see me.”

“In that case, Hagrid, don't let us detain you because if you have something important, you had better get going. I trust that the owl has been paid for, Hagrid?”

“I've paid for the bill on Professor Dumbledore's instructions. All you had to do was to choose the owl and she's all yours. See you at Hogwarts, Harry.”

“Thanks for everything, Hagrid.” Hagrid and the Potters said a quick goodbye and Hagrid made his departure so that he could return to Hogwarts.

Once Hagrid was gone, James said, “The only thing that you now need, Harry, is your wand and the only place to purchase your wand is Ollivander's wand shop.” James led the way down to Ollivander's.

Standing outside of Ollivander's wand shop, Harry noticed that the sign that was once painted in gold was now very hard to read, but if a person looked hard enough you could still read what it said. Luckily for Harry, his eyesight was sharp like his mother's and because of that, he didn't need to wear glasses like his father. Since they had come here to purchase Harry's wand, they entered the shop.

Walking through the front door, Harry could see that the floor to the ceiling of the shop was lined with wands. Seeing the number of wands that were for sale, Harry, said, “How on earth do you know which wand belongs to you?”

“The answer to that question, young man, is that the wand chooses the wizard,” Ollivander said as he appeared from behind a row of wands. The moment that he noticed the famous lightening-shaped scar on Harry's forehead, Ollivander smiled and continued, “I was wondering when you would be coming to visit my shop, Mr. Potter.

“Lily Evans Potter, your wand is ten and a quarter inches in length, swishy and made from willow, quite useful for charm work. I trust that it is still in good condition?”

“Yes, it is and I must say that I have taken very good care of it.”

“Splendid, that is what I like to hear. Now, James Potter, eleven inches, made of mahogany wood, pliable, little bit more power and excellent for transfiguration work, correct?”

“Your memory is as sharp as always, that is correct.”

“Good, now let's return our attention to young master Harry.” Ollivander gathered a tape measure so that he could take a few measurements. While he was doing this he spoke to Harry.

“Now, Master Potter, since you are after your own wand, allow me to explain a few things to you. Each of my wands are made with a core of magical substance, like dragon heartstrings or hairs of a unicorn, and they are made from a wide range of wood. While it is possible to use another person's wand to perform magic I highly recommend that you use your own to gain the results that you require. With that said, let's find your wand.”

Ollivander quickly disappeared behind the rows of shelves and began his search for Harry's wand. A couple of moments later he returned with a couple of boxes. Placing them on the counter, he took the first wand and said, “Beechwood, dragon heartstring and nice and flexible. Give it and wave to see if it's this one.”

Harry, took the wand and gave it a wave. Seeing that nothing happened, Ollivander, took it back and said, “Try this one, maple and phoenix feather.” For the second time, Harry, took the wand and the result was exactly the same as the first. Following that, Harry tried wand after wand but for every test the result not a successful match.

After trying a wand that was ebony and unicorn hair, Ollivander, placed a hand on his chin and said, “Ah a tricky customer, no matter, we shall find the right wand. I wonder…”

Before Harry could say a word he saw the wandmaker dash again behind the rows of wands to only return yet again with a wand in a case. This time, Ollivander had the feeling that this was Harry's destined wand.

He said, “Alright, Mr Potter, try this wand. Eleven inches, made of holly wood and contains a feather of a phoenix.” He held it out for Harry to grasp.

The moment that Harry's hand grasped the wand a sudden bright light emitted out of the wand. Seeing what was happening, James and Lily were both applauding while, Ollivander said curious over and over.

Hearing that he was repeating the exact same word over and over again Harry asked, “Excuse me, Mr Ollivander, I don't mean to be rude but why are you saying curious so many times?” James and Lily, turned their attention toward Ollivander so that they could hear his response.

“I remember every wand that I have ever sold, Master Potter. It just so happens that the phoenix feather which resides in your wand gave another feather. Mind you, just one other feather.”

“Who is the owner of that other wand?”

“The owner of that wand, I am afraid, is the one who gave you that scar on your forehead. If I had any idea that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would have done those terrible great things I would never have given him that powerful wand, but one thing is clear: we can expect many great things from you, Mr. Potter. That shall be seven galleons for the wand, please.” James quickly handed the money over.

As he took the money from, James, the wandmaker said one final thing, “Good luck, Harry Potter, and I shall be looking forward to hearing all about the great things that you shall accomplish in life.” Ollivander escorted James, Lily, and Harry to his front door. After the Potters exited his shop, Ollivander quickly returned to his counter and wrote a quick note to his old friend informing him that the second phoenix wand feather had just been purchased.

Upon leaving Ollivander's wand store, James turned to his family and said, “Is there anywhere else that we need to go, or do we have everything that we came for?”

“I think that we have everything, and I think it's time we were getting home; it has been a very long day. Harry, if you will grasp my hand, I'll take the two of us home.” Harry didn't need to be told twice because he too was starting to feel exhausted as well. So once again with a grasp of Harry's hand, Lily and Harry returned to their home while James soon followed shortly behind them with Harry's school trunk that had his things and of course Hedwig with her cage.

The sun was just starting to set over the horizon. From up in his office at Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore could witness a nice sunset every evening, and this evening was no exception. On this particular evening, Albus was waiting in his office for another professor. At the sound of a knock on his office door, Albus said, “Come in, Severus, and please take a seat.”

Hearing that he had been summoned by the headmaster, a man with long, greasy black hair and attired in black robes strode into the office. Once this man was seated, he said, “You requested my presence, Headmaster?”

Yes, I have, Severus, and I want to thank you for coming so promptly. The reason that I asked you to come here is that I wanted to be the one to inform you that, come the first of September, Harry Potter will be attending Hogwarts.”

“Headmaster, just how exactly am I to deal with Lily's son? I don't want to mention his resemblance to his father, but my main problem is that every time I will look at him, I shall see those emerald green coloured eyes...”

“Severus, I know all about the past friendship that you and Lily shared before you took the path that divided the two of you. While I can't be the one to solve this particular problem for you, I may be able to give you advice that may bring reconciliation between you and Lily.”

“Headmaster, I am willing to listen to whatever you have to say.”

“The first thing that you need to do, Severus, is that you mustn't treat Harry in the same manner that you treat the other houses. I would strongly recommend that you treat Harry as if he is in your own house. You shall also find that Harry will be an accomplished maker of potions. You don't have to award points to Harry but if you deign to compliment Harry about his work, then I am sure through Harry, and with time, you shall receive the final result that you are seeking. So, what do you think of my advice, Severus?”

“Albus, what you have just suggested is a very difficult thing for me to do. Have you forgotten that I am supposed to be a Death Eater, here on the Dark Lord's orders?"

“Yes, I am well aware of this fact, Severus, but you shouldn't have to worry about Tom; the longer he goes without a body to reside in, the longer it shall take for him to return.”

“Albus, since you are pretty confident with regards to the Dark Lord, I am willing to give this idea a go, but if I find out, or discover that he breaks school rules, I have to hand out punishment. Now, is there anything else that you want to discuss, Headmaster?”

“Severus, I have this feeling that something is off with Professor Quirrell. I was wondering if you could keep a close eye on him for me?”

Of course, Headmaster, but why don't you simply dismiss him and give me the D.A.D.A job?”

“I have my reasons for not giving you that job, Severus, but a time will come when you shall have that post. Be happy and content with what you have. Now, if you shall excuse me, I have a number of urgent things that I need to attend to.” Albus situated himself at his desk and took his quill to parchment.

"Also, if you wouldn't mind, please hand this to Madam Pomfrey on your way back to your classroom." His eyes took on a bright sheen and twinkled. "You're not the only one who needs to know that a new Potter is about to be in residence." Dumbledore leaned back in his chair, took a lemon drop out of a dish on his desk, and popped it into his mouth. "In fact, I'm sure she'll see more of him than all of us."

With a final glance at the headmaster, Snape shook his head and left his employer's chambers quietly. His safe, and quiet, world would never be the same.

Chapter Six: The Hogwarts Express.

With only a month to go until he was off to Hogwarts, Harry spent most of his time reading his school textbooks so that if any of his professors asked him any questions he would be able to give a satisfactory answer and hopefully get awarded points for his house.

During his reading, Harry was amazed by some of the things that he would be studying at Hogwarts. These included simple potions that could help cure things, ways to defend yourself and if you are in need of a pin, a simple transfiguration of a match and your problem is solved.

Apart from reading books all day long, Harry made sure that he spent time with his mum and dad before he caught the Hogwarts Express. Harry knew that once he started at Hogwarts, the only times that he would see his parents were the holidays or if a special occasion came up and parents were invited to come to Hogwarts.

On the morning of the first of September, Harry was awakened at seven o'clock by his alarm clock. At the sound of the alarm, Harry quickly turned it off and headed to the bathroom so that he could get showered and dressed before making his way down to the kitchen to have breakfast.

Entering the kitchen, Harry found his dad, as usual, was reading the paper while his mum was busily making breakfast. Seeing that both of his parents were occupied, Harry quickly helped with setting the table.

While Harry was doing his set task James said, “Are you looking forward to be going off to Hogwarts today, Harry?”

“Yes, Dad, and I can't wait to see it.”

“That's good, Harry, and I can promise that you won't be disappointed.” With that, James returned to his paper while Harry placed the finishing touches on the table.

Breakfast that morning for James, Lily and Harry was the last one that they would be able to have as a family until the holidays came around. Since this was the case Lily prepared everyone's favourite breakfast so that they could enjoy this last meal as a family until Harry came home from school.

During the meal, Lily said, “Are you all packed and ready to go, Harry?”

After swallowing the food in his mouth Harry replied, “Yes, Mum, I'm all set to go. I packed my trunk last night so that when it was time to go I would be ready.”

“Have you got everything that you will need?”

“I double checked everything as I packed. If I've forgotten anything I'll send a note with Hedwig to let you know. What time are we leaving?”

“We'll be leaving very shortly, Harry, because we have about a two hour car trip ahead of us.”

“Why are we going by car when I thought that we might Apparate to London?”

“Harry, while we can Apparate anywhere, anytime, the only way to get to platform nine and three quarters is through a magical barrier. Besides, with all the Muggles that will be at Kings Cross station, it is encourage that parents who are taking their children to catch the Express do their best to blend in with the Muggles. For us, this means driving to London. Now please finish as quickly as you can because we need to leave soon.”

“Ok, Mum,” Harry said, as he and his father returned their attention to having breakfast at Lily's reminder.

After breakfast was finished and the dishes were done, James, Lily, and Harry set about to get ready so that they could leave as soon as possible. James and Harry, who didn't take long to get ready, both headed up to Harry's room to grab Harry's trunk and Hedwig's cage. With a flick of his wand, James floated the trunk down to the car while Harry carefully carried Hedwig.

Reaching the four wheel drive, a Toyota X-trail, James and Harry carefully placed Harry's trunk into the luggage area and Hedwig went into the back. After ensuring that everything was secured tightly, James and Harry waited for Lily to arrive.

The moment that she appeared she said, “James, Harry, if you're all packed then it's time that we left. Would you like me to drive, James, or do you want to?”

“I'll drive, Lily, and if I have any trouble you can navigate for me.”

“In that case, let's get going because I don't want to be late.” James and Harry, who didn't want to argue with Lily, quickly got into the Toyota and they were soon on the road.

As they made the journey from Nottingham to Kings Cross station in London, Harry and Lily kept themselves amused while James drove. The journey itself was uneventful, and the most importantly, James had a good run with the traffic. However, James did notice a few police cars and at the sight of the police, he made sure that he stuck to the speed limit; the last thing that he wanted was to receive a speeding ticket.

Making their approach into London, Lily, always lovely and wise, decided that it might be sensible if she gave directions to her husband so that they wouldn't get lost. This was a good idea, since James nearly took the wrong turn.

Seeing that he had almost made a mistake, James quickly said, “Thanks, Lils, for pointing that out.”

“You can thank me later,” Lily said playfully, “but for now, please keep your attention on the road and listen to the directions that I am trying to give.”

“Yes, dear.” Following that near miss, which would have resulted in them being a little late, James with the help of Lily's directions continued toward the train station.

As James parked the car at the station, he noticed that he had made good time: it was ten fifteen. Lily got out of the car and made finding a luggage trolley her first concern. In the meantime, James and Harry unloaded Harry's school things from the car. Both James and Harry quickly loaded up the trolley upon Lily's return, and no sooner was this done than they set off toward platform nine and three quarters.

As they were making their way through the train station, James, Lily, and Harry noticed that there were Muggles walking or running to various platforms to catch their respective trains. While the Potters were perfectly blended into the Muggle world, some Muggles gave the family some very curious looks: Hedwig in her cage was drawing their attention. Since it was none of their business, the non-magical people just shook their heads and returned to what they were doing.

Approaching the barrier that concealed nine and three quarters both, James and Lily, noticed that a girl who had bushy brown hair and her parents were having trouble locating the magical barrier.

Lily assumed she was Muggle-born, and she took pity on the girl: Lily had trouble the first time she had to catch the Hogwarts Express. Lily said, “James, why don't we introduce ourselves to that family and help them to get their daughter through the barrier and onto the train?”

“I was just thinking the exact same thing, Lily.” James, Lily and Harry made their way over to the family.

As they walked towards the family of the bushy brown haired girl, the parents of the girl were trying to figure out how they would get their daughter onto the platform. Since they couldn't figure out the answer, they both turned around and noticed that James, Lily, and Harry were heading towards them.

Seeing that strangers were approaching them the daughter of the parents said, “Mum, Dad, maybe the people who are heading towards us will able to help us out.”

“What makes you so sure, Hermione?”

“Dad, the reason is very simple. On their cart is a trunk similar to my own and there is an owl in a cage. According to the letter we are allowed a cat, toad, or owl as a pet. Besides, how many people have an owl as a pet?”

“It seems that you are indeed correct, Hermione, but where on earth did you get those brains?”

“I believe that she received that precious gift from me, Rodger. Look, here they come.”

James, Lily and Harry reached the spot where Rodger, Jane, and Hermione were standing. James gently said, “Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but my wife and I were wondering if you were having trouble getting onto the platform?”

Rodger responded, “As a matter of fact, we are, but how did you know that we were having trouble?”

“My wife had the exact same trouble with finding the platform on her first trip. Your daughter is a Muggle-born witch. Am I right to say so?”

“You are indeed correct, sir. By the way, my name is Rodger Granger, this is my wife Jane, and our only child and daughter, Hermione.”

“It is a pleasure to meet you Rodger, Jane, and Hermione. Allow me to introduce myself. I am James Potter, this is my wife Lily, and our son Harry.”

At the mention of Harry's name, Hermione couldn't believe that she was meeting the actual Harry Potter. Since Hermione didn't want to be rude she came forward and said, “I am glad to meet you, Harry.”

“Thank you, Hermione, and I hope that we can be friends.”

“Friends? You want to be my friend?” The reason that Hermione asked this question was because she hadn't had many friends as a child because everyone called her names since Hermione had a passion for books.

Seeing that Hermione seemed troubled with asking that question Harry said, “Hermione, even though that we have just met and hardly know each other I can tell that there is something special about you. I'll tell you what, why don't you sit with me and as the train travels we can get to know each other. Of course, you don't have to but if you want…”

“I would like that very much, Harry, and I am very anxious to know the real you considering that the only thing that I know about you is from what I have read from the books that you are in.”

Rodger said, “It looks as if things for the journey have been organized, but if you don't mind time is ticking away and I am sure that you want to find a seat before they are all taken.”

At this, James turned to look at a nearby clock. Seeing that it was ten thirty he said, “Blimey, you are right and it's time that we get a move on. Rodger, Jane, if you want to say goodbye to Hermione, now would be the perfect time to do so. We'll just wait over here so that we can give you a couple of moments.”

“Thank you, James, and we won't be long.”

James led his family to the side so that Rodger and Jane could say their goodbyes to Hermione.

As the Grangers said their goodbyes to each other, Harry couldn't help but wonder what kind of person Hermione was. Even though her hair was brown and bushy, eyes were of a brown colour and the fact that she had large teeth, Harry knew with appearances aside that he had just made a friend who might get to know him for just who he is instead of being `The Boy Who Lived.' However, before Harry could really ponder about Hermione, Rodger indicated that they were ready.

James quickly said, “Lily, Harry, are you ready?”

Lily said, “Yes, James, let's pick up Hermione, and take her safely through the barrier.”

The Potters quickly returned to the Grangers. As they neared the Grangers for the second time, they heard Jane said, “Have a wonderful time at Hogwarts, Hermione, and please send us an owl to inform us with how you are doing.”

“I will, Mum, and I am sure that I am in for an exciting time. Would you mind if I got on the train now? I don't want to be late.”

“Of course, dear.” Jane gave Hermione one quick last hug before her daughter had to depart.

As they broke apart James said, “Rodger, Jane, you don't worry about Hermione; Lily and I will make sure that she safely gets onto the train.”

“James, Lily, thank you both and on behalf of Jane and myself, we appreciate your kindness. I trust and hope that we shall meet again.”

“Like wise, Rodger, and I have every confidence that we shall see each other again. For now it's time that we took Harry and Hermione through the barrier.” With that the two men quickly shook hands.

James and Lily led Harry and Hermione over to where the barrier was. After quickly explaining to both of them how to get onto the platform, Harry and Hermione soon disappeared through it with James and Lily right behind them.

Seeing that James, Lily, Harry, and Hermione were safely through the barrier Jane turned to her husband and said, “You know what, Rodger, while I have no doubt in my mind that we shall be seeing James and Lily again, I wouldn't be surprised if it is Harry we'll be seeing more of.”

At this Rodger turned to face his wife and said, “Just what exactly do you mean by that statement, Jane, dear?”

“Sorry, Rodger, but I am afraid that I can't tell you that answer, but let's just say I have this premonition. But for now, I think it's time that we returned to our practice.”

“Alright, Jane, but you had better tell me exactly what your premonition is,” said Rodger as they prepared to leave Kings Cross station and return to work.

Emerging from the barrier that concealed platform nine and three quarters, the first thing that Harry and Hermione saw was smoke that was coming from the funnel of the bright red steam engine that pulls the train. At the sight that was before their very own eyes both Harry and Hermione could only gaze at the splendid train.

While they were gazing at the Hogwarts Express, James and Lily also emerged onto the platform.

Seeing that the kids were staring at the great train, James said, “Harry, Hermione, this is the Hogwarts Express. Now, if you want to find a place to sit for the journey then we had better be quick because it doesn't take long for the train compartments to be taken and filled.”

“Alright, Dad. Come on, Hermione, let's find a compartment,” Harry said, and led the way to find a place.

Making their way down the platform, Harry could see that a lot of parents had come to see their children off to Hogwarts. Since this was the case, it took a couple of moments for Harry, Hermione, James, and Lily to walk through the crowded platform.

About half way down the train, Harry spotted an empty compartment. Harry said, “Here's an empty compartment, and by the looks of things no one has claimed it yet.”

“In that case, Harry, stand back and I'll place your trunks in the compartment for you.”

Harry immediately took a few steps back so that he could give his dad some space.

With a flick of his wand, James soon had both of Harry's and Hermione's school trunks inside of the compartment and Hedwig's cage as well.

Once the luggage was taken care of Hermione said, “If you don't mind, I would like to get changed into my school robes before the train leaves.”

“That's alright, Hermione. James, Harry, and I shall wait on the platform so that we can give you the privacy to change.” Lily closed the compartment door and left.

While Hermione was getting changed into her school robes, Harry decided that he would look in the direction of where the barrier was so that he could see if anyone else had come to catch the train. No sooner had Harry done this than he instantly noticed a family who all seemed to have red hair was emerging onto the platform.

Before the family could notice that Harry was looking towards them he heard Hermione's voice say, “Harry, if you also want to get changed into your robes before the train departs, then you can use the compartment because I am finished with it.”

Harry turned around and said, “Thank you, Hermione, and I might just do that.” Harry and Hermione swapped places.

After the door was closed, Harry opened up his trunk to remove one set of school robes that he could change into. It didn't take Harry long to get changed and the moment that he was finished, he quickly tidied up his things so that he could show his parents what he looked like in his robes.

Emerging from the compartment, both James and Lily quickly turned so that they could see what Harry was like in his robes.

Seeing that Harry was all dressed for Hogwarts Lily said, “Look, James, our precious Harry is all set and ready to attend Hogwarts.”

“I know, Lily, but don't forget that Hermione is also ready. Now, since we only have a few moments left, why don't we take a couple of photos of Harry and Hermione in their school robes?”

“That's a lovely idea, and I am sure that Hermione's parents would like to have a picture of their daughter.”

“In that case, I have got the camera ready, so let's snap away.”

For the next few moments James was very busy taking photos of both Harry and Hermione. Some of the photos were individual shots of Harry and Hermione, while some photos had them together.

When James had finished taking the photos Hermione said, “Thank you for taking those pictures, Mr Potter, and I am sure that my parents will appreciate them.”

“That's alright, Hermione, and once I have had them developed, I'll send you a copy so that you may choose which you want to owl to your parents.”

Before anyone else could say another word, everyone on the platform heard the conductor's voice call out:

“ALL ABOARD FOR THOSE TRAVELLING ON THE HOGWARTS EXPRESS. THE TRAIN IS DUE TO DEPART IN ONE MINUTES' TIME.”

At the sound of the boarding call Lily quickly said, “Harry, Hermione, you had better get on board if you don't want to miss the train.”

Neither of them needed to be told because Harry and Hermione had quickly scrambled on the instant that they heard the call.

Once they were on board and the door was closed Lily continued, “Now, I am sure that you too will be perfectly fine for the journey. If you have any problems or issues, don't hesitate to inform a Prefect or the Head Boy or Girl because they are there to ensure the safety of the students. Have a good term and Harry, do take care and try to avoid any kind of trouble.”

“I won't make any kind of promise, Mum, but I shall try to do my best.”

“That is all that I can ask of you, Harry.”

“Harry, since your mum has said her piece, the only thing that I can recommend is make sure that you have fun because studying all the time can get quite boring after a while.”

“Dad, if I can I will try to make you proud of me and with any luck I should be on the Quidditch team.”

“I am already proud of you, Harry, but remember to have fun and most of all make good friends at school.”

“Don't worry, Dad, I'll make friends. I already have a friend,” Harry said as he turned to face Hermione.

Seeing that Harry was looking towards her, Hermione came forward and said, “As Harry's friend I'll make sure that he doesn't overstep the line and I am sure that he shall do the same for me.”

“Well since that's settled, your father and I shall see you at Christmas, Harry. Have a good trip and I am sure that you shall get to know each other pretty well.”

The train's whistle sounded and the Hogwarts Express was starting to pull out. Seeing that the train was moving, both Harry and Hermione waved goodbye to James and Lily until they could no longer see each other.

Once they were out of range Hermione said, “Since we have got plenty of time until we reach Hogwarts, Harry, why don't you tell me all about yourself and I'll do the same, but first why don't we take a seat so that we can make ourselves more comfortable.”

“I like the sound of that, Hermione, why don't we each ask a question so that we can take it in turns.” With that Harry and Hermione quickly sat down on opposite seats so that they could face each other.

After making themselves comfortable Hermione said, “That's a better idea, Harry, and here is my first question. What is your favourite colour?”

“My favourite colours are red and gold. How about yourself?”

“I like purple and periwinkle blue. What kind of things do you like to do, Harry?”

“Well, whenever I get the chance I love flying on a broomstick with my dad but if I am alone I love to read books.”

At the sound of books Hermione instantly got all excited and said, “What kind of books do you like to read? Have you read Hogwarts: A History? How about…”

Before Hermione could really get going Harry interrupted her. “Whoa Hermione, slow down and take it easy; we've got all afternoon. Now as to your question, yes I love to read books and I certainly have read Hogwarts: A History. I have found it to be quite enjoyable to read and I must say I am looking forward to seeing some of the things that the book mentions. Which part of the book interests you the most, Hermione?”

“I like the entire book, Harry, but if there is one thing that I am looking forward to seeing the most, then it has to be the library. From what I have read the library is suppose to be huge.”

“It is, Hermione, that you can rest assured of. Now, tell me all about your childhood and than I'll tell you all about mine.”

“Ok Harry, here it goes…” With that Hermione told Harry all about herself and her childhood.

Hermione told Harry that she didn't have many friends, her parents were dentists, and described some instances of accidental magic. During their conversation, Harry sat and listened very carefully to every word that Hermione said and while he was at it, Harry nodded in understanding so that Hermione knew that he was listening. Harry noticed that Hermione seemed to be smart, and he predicted that she was going to be a bright student.

“Alright Harry, now that I have told you all about myself it's your turn.”

“In that case Hermione, let's see how I go…”

He told Hermione that he loved to fly and that he was a natural, how he did fairly well in school and that he was looking forward to attending school and other things in general

By the time that Harry had fully explained to Hermione all about his childhood and the things that he did with his parents, Hermione was quite surprised by what she heard. Originally, Hermione thought that Harry might have been someone who boasted about being famous. Instead, Hermione discovered quite the opposite as Harry told her that he didn't like to be famous at all.

Upon reaching the end of what he wanted to tell Hermione, Harry said, “Is there anything else that you would like to know about me, Hermione?”

“Harry, I think that you have answered all of my questions for the time being. Would you like to read a book with me, Harry?”

For some unknown reason Harry couldn't help but smile and replied, “I would like that very much, Hermione.”

Hermione quickly opened her trunk and pulled out Hogwarts: A History. She quickly sat down beside Harry and said, “Hope you don't mind reading Hogwarts: A History?”

“Hermione, whatever book you choose to read is fine with me.”

Pleased that Harry was so agreeable, Hermione excitedly turned to the first page so that they could read the book together.

Just as Harry and Hermione reached the end of chapter five of Hogwarts: A History, there was a knock on their compartment door.

Harry said, “I suppose I should see who that is,” as he got up and opened the door.

As Harry slid the door back, he noticed that it was another boy. Since he didn't want to be rude Harry quickly said, “Can I help you?”

The boy quickly looked up and said, “Don't mean to interrupt you, but I have lost my pet toad, Trevor. You haven't seen him it at all?”

“I am sorry to say it, but I haven't seen any toads around. Tell you what, since I haven't seen it and if it's alright with Hermione, why don't I give you a hand?”

“You would do that for me even though you don't know my name?”

“Of course I would. By the way, I'm Harry Potter and this is my friend, Hermione,” Harry said as he stepped aside so that the boy could properly see Hermione.

However, before Harry could introduce Hermione fully the boy quickly continued, “My name is Neville Longbottom and I am sorry to have disturbed you, Harry. I'll just go.”

Neville turned to go but before he could take a couple of steps Harry said, “Neville, there is no need for you to leave. If you still want my help to find your pet, then I would like to help you.”

Hermione added, “You can count me in as well.”

Harry said, “In that case let's split up, and between the three of us, I am sure that we can find Neville's toad, Trevor.” Within moments, Harry, Hermione and Neville headed off to find Neville's pet.

Walking down the aisle of the train carriages, Harry stopped at several compartments to see if anyone had seen a pet toad called Trevor. The only answers that Harry received were `No, sorry' or `Haven't seen it'. Seeing that he wasn't having any luck whatsoever, Harry was about to head back to his compartment when all of a sudden he heard a very familiar sound. It was the sound of riotous laughter he associated with pulling a joke. Hearing this noise and excitement, Harry immediately set out to see where the sound was coming from.

Luckily for Harry, he didn't have too far to walk; the sound was coming from the carriage that he was currently in. Upon reaching the compartment from which the sound of the fun was emitting, Harry could see it contained fiery red-haired twins another person with dreadlocks in his hair. Before Harry could say or do anything, the boy who had the dreadlocks noticed that Harry was standing out in the corridor.

The boy said, “Fred, George, it seems that we have a visitor and from the looks of things, it's a first year student.”

At the sound of this the twins turned to face each other and said:

“Gred, are you thinking what I am thinking?”

“Forge, I believe that I am.”

“In that case Gred, let's see who has come to grace the Weasley pranksters.”

“I like the sound of that, Forge.”

The twins indicated to the boy to enter the compartment.

Seeing that he was being waved in, Harry slid the door opened and said, “Sorry for interrupting the fun, but I was wondering if any of you have seen a pet toad at all?”

“I don't think that I have seen any toads. Have you seen any lost toads Forge?”

“Sorry, I haven't, but if you want a toad, then why don't you give this wand a wave,” George suggested as he handed a wand to Harry.

Harry was hesitant to take the wand, but since his father was a known prankster Harry gladly took the wand and gave it a wave. The moment that Harry waved the wand it immediately turned into a rubber chicken. Looking down at what used to be a wand, Harry instantly burst into laughter.

After taking a couple of moments to calm down Harry said, “I don't know about you, but I reckon that wand is a pretty good joke.”

Discovering that this kid seemed to like the joke, the twins came forward and introduced themselves.

“On behalf of Forge and myself, we are delighted to see that you loved our joke. Our names are Fred and George Weasley and we are the pranksters of Hogwarts. This is our friend Lee Jordon.”

“Glad to meet all of you. By the way, my name is Harry Potter.”

Upon hearing and seeing that it was `Harry Potter' in person, Fred, George, and Lee couldn't believe that they were actually meeting the Boy Who Lived. After allowing a couple of moments for the shock to wear off, it was Lee who first spoke.

“Harry, we don't know what to say, but all three of us are delighted to have the chance to meet you.”

“Yes, Harry my boy, we are…”

“So delighted to meet you and…”

“We trust that the both of us can teach you…”

“How to break rules while you attend Hogwarts.”

“Guys, I am deeply touched by your offer and if the time comes I'll gladly seek you out but for now I would like to resume my search for my friend's lost toad.”

“By all means, Harry…”

“If we see a stray toad…”

“We'll bring it to you so…”

“That you can return it your friend.”

The twins and Lee bid farewell to Harry so that he could continue searching. As Harry slide the compartment door closed behind him Lee said, “Can you guys actually believe that we have just met the famous Harry Potter?”

“Lee, it isn't that hard to believe at all because…”

“He was just sitting right here…”

“In this very compartment with us.”

“Now that you mention, it why don't we spread the word around that Harry Potter is onboard the train?”

“Er, Lee, before we do anything of the sort, our mother forbade us to do anything of the sort but…”

“It wouldn't hurt to put the word out…”

“The only thing that we won't mention is what he looks like and by doing that…”

“We can't get into any trouble with our mother.”

“Since we are all agreed to spread the word around, let's start from the last carriage and make our way forward so that we can allow Harry plenty of time to return to his compartment.”

“In that case, my dear brother and Lee, let's get cracking and spread the word and remember: `mum's' the word.” With that Fred, George and Lee set out to inform everyone that Harry Potter was onboard the Express.

After leaving the twins' and Lee's compartment, Harry headed back to his own compartment. Upon reaching his seat, Harry discovered that both Neville and Hermione had already returned from their search.

Harry said, “Neville, I'm afraid that I wasn't able to locate Trevor for you.”

“That's alright, Harry, and thanks for your help.”

“Is there anything else that Harry and I can do to help you at all, Neville?”

“I don't think so, but I would like to thank you for your help. If you don't mind, I'll just keep looking and who knows, he may just turn up. Excuse me,” Neville replied as he left the compartment to resume his search.

Hermione said, “I hope that Neville finds his pet toad.”

“Hope that your right, Hermione, but we've done all that we can to help to find Trevor. Now, why don't we pick up from where he left of with regards to reading that book?”

“That sounds like another excellent idea, Harry, and I believe that we are up to chapter six.” Harry quickly picked up Hogwarts: A History and turned to the said chapter so that he and Hermione could resume their reading.

While Harry and Hermione happily read away, they had no idea that word was quickly spreading along the train, courtesy of Fred, George, and Lee, that Harry Potter was onboard the train due. True to their promise, the three kept Harry's description secret; the last thing they wanted was for Harry to be bombarded with Hogwarts students eager to meet him.

Chapter Seven: Sorting Ceremony.

The sun was beginning to set over the western horizon and the Hogwarts Express was nearing its destination of Hogsmeade station. With the onset of night time fast approaching, the lights in the compartments of the train magically came on to provide light for the remainder of the journey.

Noticing that the lights were now shining brightly, Harry knew that they must be near Hogwarts. His suspicions were soon confirmed when an amplified voice rang throughout the train.

“Fellow Hogwarts students, this is the Head Boy speaking. The train is just a couple of moments from reaching the train station. If you haven't changed into your robes yet, now would be a good time to do so. Further instructions shall be given out shortly. Thank you.”

Hermione said, “By the sounds of things, Harry, we had better place our books away so that as soon as reach the station, we can quickly follow any instructions given.”

“Of course, Hermione,” agreed Harry as he and his new friend set about tidying up after themselves.

Apart from having to return books to his trunk, Harry also had to pack away the left over lollies and snacks that he had purchased from the cart lady when she visited the compartment. Among the snacks that Harry bought were Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, and some sugar free treats for Hermione. Seeing that Harry was offering sweets to her, Hermione didn't know what to say, but after Harry informed her that the sweets were sugar free, Hermione gratefully accepted the lollies.

No sooner had they tidied up their compartment than yet again Harry and Hermione heard the voice of the Head Boy.

“Students, we are now on the final stretch to Hogwarts. The moment that the train has come to a complete stop, I ask the Prefects to supervise that everyone gets off the train in an orderly manner. To make things easier for everyone, if the first year students could get of the train first, that would be greatly appreciated. First year students, once you exit from the train, just follow the instructions that are given from the person who shall be escorting you to the castle. Your luggage that shall be taken up to the school as soon as everyone has left the train.” At this the train slowed quite a bit. Noticing that the speed was diminishing the Head Boy continued.

“My fellow students, allow me to be the first to welcome you to Hogwarts. Just remember my instructions and I shall meet you all up at the school.”

Hermione said, “Come on, Harry, let's get to the front door so that we can be the first ones off.”

“I'm right behind you, Hermione,” said Harry, and the two friends made their way towards the front of the carriage.

It was a good idea that Harry and Hermione left to head towards the exit door of the train carriage because by the time that they had reached it, a few other fellow first year students were heading towards where Harry and Hermione were both standing. By the time the other students had reached them, the train had come to a complete stop at the station.

No sooner had they finally pulled up than the doors magically opened of their own accord. The prefect stationed at the door where Harry and Hermione were standing indicated for them to exit the train. Since they already knew exactly what they had to do, Harry and Hermione quickly left the train. As they stepped onto the platform Harry instantly heard a familiar voice.

“Firs' year students, this way!”

Harry immediately turned his head, and there standing on the platform with a lamp in his hand was Hagrid. Before Harry could say anything Hagrid continued to say, “Firs' years!”

Harry led Hermione over to where Hagrid was standing.

Meanwhile, Hagrid looked down at the students to see if he could spot Harry among the first years. It didn't take long for Hagrid to spot Harry because he was one of the first students who reached where he was standing.

The moment that Hagrid's eyes found Harry he happily said, “Yeh alrigh' there, Harry? Didn't have any problems at all?”

“I'm fine, Hagrid, and the ride was very smooth. I did make a new friend though. Would you like to meet her?”

“Sorry, Harry, but I haven't got time at the mo'. Tell yeh what, soon as classes finish on Friday afternoon, why don't yeh and yer friend come down to my hut and we'll have a spot o' tea together.”

“That sounds nice, Hagrid, we'll be there.”

With Harry's promise to visit, Hagrid became delighted. Before Hagrid could even think about Friday, he suddenly noticed that all of the first year students had gathered and were standing in front of him.

Hagrid said, “If yeh'll jus' follow me, I'll be more than happy to escort yeh up to the castle,” and led the group of new students over to a small dock so that they could take the customary boat ride over the Lake to the castle.

As they followed behind Hagrid, Hermione said nervously, “Harry, you wouldn't mind if I came with you on Friday to meet Hagrid? It's just that I am anxious and curious about the wizarding world.”

“I don't mind at all, Hermione. Actually, I was hoping that you would come with me. If you have any questions, then I'm sure that Hagrid will be willing to answer them.”

Before Hermione could say something else, Hagrid and the students came to where the dock was located. Hagrid explained, “From here we'll be takin' a quick boat ride over the Lake to Hogwarts. No more than four people to a boat; they're rather small.”

Everyone anxiously scrambled towards the boats, anticipating their arrival to Hogwarts.

Once all of the students and Hagrid were seated, Hagrid tapped his boat with his umbrella and said, “Righ', here we go then. Forward.”

At the sound of that command, the small fleet of boats departed for a small journey across the mass of water.

As they made their way across the lake, the first year students travelled in utter silence: they were amazed by the impressive sight of Hogwarts castle, more and more visible as they approached. Harry and Hermione didn't know what to say or do; both were just as surprised as their fellow classmates.

From where Harry was sitting in the boat, he could see that the castle was as brightly lit as a Christmas tree. Harry could also see that there seemed to be several tall towers, a hall of some kind, a greenhouse, and he could just vaguely see a couple of goal posts at one end of a pitch. Seeing those posts, Harry had no doubt that there was indeed a Quidditch pitch. However, before he could really think about the prospect of Quidditch, Harry heard Hagrid bellow an instruction.

“Everyone, heads down.”

Immediately everyone ducked their heads as they passed under a low entranceway.

Once they were all safely through Hagrid continued with, “Yeh can raise yer heads again, we're through.”

Harry and his fellow classmates returned to sitting in an upright position. Before they could get comfortable again in the boats, Harry could see that they were approaching yet another harbour which was located quite close to the castle. Taking the chance to look around, Harry noticed that this harbour seemed to be underground and was made out of stone.

Upon reaching the jetty, Hagrid was the first person on shore and promptly assisted the students, using his umbrella to move the empty boats aside so that all of the first year students could get ashore.

After everyone was standing on the harbour he quickly said, “If yeh'll follow me, I'll take yeh up to the castle,” and began the short trek to Hogwarts.

Only a short flight of stairs separated the new students from their destination, and in no time they were there. Reaching the very top of the stairs, they came to a door that could only be opened from the inside. Hagrid raised his hand and knocked three times. After waiting a couple of moments, the doors swung open to reveal a lady in emerald green robes with a stern look on her face.

At the sight of the lady, Hagrid said, “Here're the firs' year students, Professor McGonagall.”

“Thank you, Hagrid. I shall take over from here.”

Professor McGonagall stepped aside to allow Hagrid and all of the new students entrance to the castle. After the last student had entered, she quickly closed and locked the door.

McGonagall quickly said, “Follow me.”

By the tone of voice that the professor had just spoken in, the students quickly did as they were told; the last thing that they wanted was to get into trouble on the first day. After walking up yet a few more flights of stairs, Professor McGonagall led the group of first years to a small room that was located outside the Great Hall.

Once everyone was inside McGonagall addressed the anxious first years.

“Welcome to Hogwarts, and I trust that you shall have a wonderful experience while you attend here. Now, in a couple of moments you shall join your fellow classmates that are already seated in the Great Hall. Before you do join them, you must first be Sorted into one of the four houses of Hogwarts. The names of the four houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house shall be like your family in a way and as part of a family you shall all work together. At the end of each year, the house with the most house points is awarded the house cup. If you have any triumphs throughout the year, points shall be awarded to your house, but any rule breaking will result in the reduction of points.

“Now that I have said that, I'll just go and see if everything is ready for your Sorting Ceremony. While I am gone for a couple of moments, why don't you straighten yourselves up,” she advised and headed towards the Great Hall.

The moment that she departed the room, Hermione was about to talk to Harry, but before she could even get the chance to, the blonde haired wizard that Harry met in Madam Malkin's store spoke out so that everyone could hear what he had to say.

“It's true then, what they said on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts.”

At the sound of Harry's name all of the students whispered amongst themselves.

Harry turned around and said, “Yes, it is true that I have come to attend Hogwarts. Who is asking, by the way?”

The blonde haired boy came forward with two other goons. At the same time a red haired boy came up and stood near Harry so that he could see for himself that Fred and George weren't joking.

Upon reaching Harry the blonde haired boy continued to say, “This is Crabbe and Goyle, and I am Malfoy. Draco Malfoy.”

At the mention of Draco Malfoy's name, the red-haired boy who was standing nearby started to snort with laughter.

Draco swiftly turned his attention to the red-haired boy. After taking a quick look at the person who was making fun of him, Draco retorted, “By the looks of things, you don't need to tell me who you are. A person who has red hair, freckles all over his face, and wears hand me down robes must be a member of the Weasley family. Are you a Weasley, Weasley?”

“The name is Ron and yes, I am a Weasley.”

Draco returned his attention to Harry and said, “If you'd like, Harry, I can show you the proper people you can associate with instead of the riffraff of the wizarding world,” and held out his hand for Harry to shake, staring at Ron at the same time.

Seeing the hand that was being offered to him to shake, Harry first turned to the red haired boy that Draco was making fun of. From what Harry could make out, Ron was red in the face from embarrassment. Harry then turned to face Hermione, his friend. It only took an instant for Harry to see the look on her face: she was scared to lose the new friend that she had just made. Knowing Hermione was scared and that people had made fun of her as she grew up, Harry wasn't going to jeopardise or risk that friendship with Hermione.

Harry replied, “Draco, since you have a high and mighty opinion of whom the riffraffs are of the wizarding world, then I can gladly say that I can decide for myself who they are. Now, if you don't want to be jinxed or hexed by me, then I strongly recommend that you don't call my friends names. Do I make myself clear, Malfoy?”

During Harry's response to Draco's question, statement or demand, however you want to take it, neither Ron nor Draco could believe what Harry was saying. Hermione, however, was relieved to hear that her friend had steadfastly refused this arrogant boy's offer of friendship and that Harry had chosen to remain friends with her. While Hermione didn't fully know why she was so relieved at the moment, she knew she'd eventually find the answer. For now, she chose to ignore that feeling and returned her attention to Draco Malfoy.

“You know, it's not every day that a Malfoy extends his hands in friendship to people, Potter. Since you have chosen to be friends with them,” said Draco, pointing at both Hermione and Ron, “don't come running to me and say that you have made a dreadful mistake with making and choosing your friends. I can guarantee you that you shall never have my friendship.”

“Malfoy, whatever you just said is fine with me. I have a feeling that I have made the right decision. Now, if you shall excuse me, I believe I haven't formally introduced myself to Ron yet,” finished Harry as he turned his attention towards Ron.

“As you already know, I'm Harry Potter, but please call me Harry,” he said, extending a hand to Ron.

Ron grasped Harry's hand and said, “Ronald Weasley, but everyone mostly calls me Ron.”

“Glad to meet you, Ron, and this is my friend, Hermione Granger.”

Hermione came and stood beside Harry. She said, “Pleasure to meet you, Ron, and by the way, you have dirt on your nose just here.”

Hermione indicated on her nose where the dirt mark was so that Ron knew where it was. Discovering that he indeed did have a dirty nose, Ron quickly rubbed the spot in an attempt to remove the dirt.

As Ron was attending to the dirt, Malfoy started to crack up in laughter at Ron's expense.

Hearing that his friend was about to be a joke for Malfoy's humour Harry quickly said, “If you think that it's funny to laugh at another person's expense, Malfoy, then I can easily place a dirt mark on your own nose for everyone to see and laugh at. So if I were you I'd stop making fun of Ron, or would you like me to embarrass you, Malfoy?”

Luckily for Malfoy he didn't have to respond to that question because it was at that moment that Professor McGonagall returned to where the students were waiting.

Upon her return McGonagall said, “Everything is all set and everyone is anxious to see you all. So if you can quickly form two lines, I shall lead you into the Great Hall.”

The first years obediently formed the requested lines and as soon as they were ready, McGonagall led them in.

Walking into the Great Hall was an amazing experience that Harry and the other first year students would not be forgetting. Entering through the double doors, the first things that the new students noticed were hundreds of lit candles floating above their heads. Beyond the floating candles, they could see that the ceiling seemed to be showing something that resembled the sky. Although Harry knew exactly what the ceiling could do, Hermione explained what it was to the girl walking down the aisle beside her.

“The ceiling is bewitched to take on the appearance of what the sky is like at either day or night time. I read about it in Hogwarts: A History.”

Hearing his friend say those words, Harry just smiled to himself as he continued to make his way down the aisle that was between the tables.

Harry guessed that the four tables represented the houses of Hogwarts that Professor McGonagall had just talked about. Harry noticed as he walked past that the older students sat at the back, while the younger ones were towards the front. This was soon confirmed because by the time they had reached the very front of the Great Hall, Harry could clearly see that there were empty places at each table for the new students.

Upon reaching the front of the great hall, Harry was met with the sight of the staff table. Seeing this, Harry's eyes were immediately drawn to the centre of the table where he saw a golden chair. There, sitting in that seat, was the very person Harry considered to be his grandfather: Albus Dumbledore.

Sensing that a very familiar person was looking in his direction, Albus turned his attention towards his adopted grandson, Harry. Discovering that his sense was indeed true, Albus blinked at Harry to tell Harry that he had noticed him. The happy moment that Albus and Harry just shared was soon interrupted by the voice of Professor McGonagall.

“Before the Sorting Ceremony commences, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words.”

At the mention of his name, Albus stood up and addressed the student population of Hogwarts.

“I just have a couple start of term announcements that I would like to bring to your attention. First, the forbidden forest that is located on the boundary of the school is, as always, forbidden to all students. Second, our caretaker Mr Filch,” Dumbledore indicated to everyone who Filch was, “has asked me to remind you that magic is forbidden in the school corridors and that all joke things that are sold from Zonko's shop are forbidden. For those students who are wanting to try out for the interhouse Quidditch team, please give your names to either Madam Hooch or your head of house. Last of all, the third floor corridor on the right hand of the school is out of bounds to all students. For those who wish to avoid a most painful death, I strongly suggest that you steer clear of that corridor. Thank you, that's all, on with the Sorting Ceremony.”

Dumbledore resumed his seat and Professor McGonagall came forward and said, “Now, when I call your name, come and take a seat on the stool and I'll place the hat on top of your head. The hat shall Sort you into your houses. Hannah Abbott.”

At the sound of her name, Hannah, who had a pink face and blonde hair, came forward to be Sorted.

After a couple of moments of thinking the hat cried out, “HUFFLEPUFF!” and instantly the table that belonged to said house erupted into applause.

After McGonagall removed the hat from her head, Hannah made her way over to her house. Once she was seated McGonagall called out the next student on her list.

“Susan Bones.”

Susan approached the stool. From what Harry could see she had red hair and she wore it in a long plait. Doing exactly as Hannah just did, Susan was soon being Sorted.

Taking a good look into her mind the hat yelled out, “HUFFLEPUFF!”

For the second time for that evening, that table applauded for the newest member to join their house.

The next person to be Sorted was Terry Boot. Terry became the first Ravenclaw to be Sorted and just like Hufflepuff table, the Ravenclaw table welcomed Terry with much applause. Next was Mandy Brocklehurst and she too joined the Ravenclaw table. Lavender Brown soon followed, and as the first new Gryffindor, she received a very warm welcome.

Next up was Millicent Bulstrode, who went to Slytherin; Vincent Crabbe also joined Slytherin; Justin Finch-Fletchley became the third Hufflepuff; Seamus Finnigan joined Gryffindor; Gregory Goyle joined Slytherin, and up next was Hermione Granger.

At the mention of her name, Hermione took a couple of deep breaths and whispered to herself, “Ok relax, you can do this.” Taking a seat on the stool with the hat on her head, the Sorting of Hermione began.

Hermione heard the hat say, “My, my, you are indeed a bright one, aren't you. Haven't seen the likes of you for quite a while, but that's another story. Now, I have two options. You have the brains for Ravenclaw, and yet you have the bravery and courage for Gryffindor. Allow me to take a couple of moments to think about you.”

While the hat was thinking very about where to place Hermione, Hermione looked straight at Harry to see if he was watching. Indeed, Harry was looking at her and hoping that the hat would place Hermione into Gryffindor. During their gaze at each other the hat spoke softly to Hermione so that only she could hear.

“It seems to me that you have already made a special friend and if I am not mistaken, your friendship will develop into something that shall last for a very long. Since this is the case, the only house that I can place you into is GRYFFINDOR!”

Hearing that Hermione was sorted into Gryffindor, Harry happily applauded for his friend, as did the Gryffindor table. Removing the hat from her head, Hermione headed over to the table that was applauding and took a seat. Once she was seated, Hermione took the liberty of saving the seat beside her for Harry to have once he was placed into Gryffindor.

Rolling on with the Sorting, Neville Longbottom became the next Gryffindor, then Morag MacDougal was placed into Ravenclaw. She was quickly followed by Draco Malfoy. It didn't take Draco long to be Sorted: even before the hat touched his head, it yelled out Slytherin.

Draco just smirked and headed over to the table where his house sat. After Malfoy was taken care of, Theodore Nott and Pansy Parkinson were quickly placed into Slytherin as well. Padma Patil became the next Ravenclaw student and her twin sister, Parvati Patil, joined Gryffindor. With the Patil twins sorted, McGonagall took a look at the list to see who was next. The name that she saw was one that she was anxiously looking forward to. So with a loud clear voice professor McGonagall called out, “Harry Potter.”

At the sound of Harry Potter's name being mentioned, everyone in the Great Hall instantly became quiet and the student population turned to face the front so that they all could see what house the most famous person would be Sorted into.

Hearing his name being mentioned, Harry just casually made his up to the stool so that he could be Sorted. At the same time, Harry knew that he had everyone's attention, so he just ignored them and concentrated on the task at hand.

Once he had taken a seat on the stool and the hat was on top of his head, Harry heard the hat say, “I have heard many things about you, Mr. Potter, and I am delighted that you have finally arrived at Hogwarts. Now, let's have a look inside of your head.”

The hat spent the next couple of moments having a really thorough look into Harry's mind. Once the hat was satisfied with what he could tell, he spoke again to Harry.

“Mr. Potter, it seems to me that you are indeed a very difficult person to Sort. From what I could see, you have plenty of courage, a nice thirst for knowledge, have a thing for pulling pranks (which your father was very known for doing) and the last thing is that you have made a special friend as well. The only thing that I have to decide on is what house I place you in.”

“Um Mr. Sorting Hat, if it's alright with you, please don't Sort me into Slytherin because I don't want to go there.”

“Not Slytherin, you say. Is there a reason as to why I should not place you into Slytherin?”

“Actually, there are a couple of reasons. One is that both of my parents were in Gryffindor. Two, I don't want to be in the exact same house as that Malfoy boy, and three, my friend is in Gryffindor and I don't want her to be alone in that house without any friends.”

“Mr. Potter, for one so young I must say that your reasons have astounded me. I can see that you have made a wonderful friend with Miss Granger and from what I can gather, that friendship shall develop into a true and strong friendship. Therefore, the only house that I can place you into is GRYFFINDOR!”

Instantly the table of Gryffindor burst with loud applauding, cheers, and the stomping of feet. Among the noise Harry could hear that someone was yelling out to the other houses, “We've got Potter, we've got Potter,” over and over. Seeing that he was receiving the biggest welcome for the night, Harry quickly removed the hat from his head and placed it into the hands of Professor McGonagall, who had a huge smile on her face. After taking the hat from Harry, McGonagall gestured for Harry to head over to the table so that everyone could settle down and the Sorting could resume.

Approaching the table that was now going to be his home, Harry could see that Hermione was indicating for Harry to sit beside her. Seeing that his friend had saved him a seat just for him, Harry was only too happy to take the seat. No sooner had he taken the seat than Hermione hugged Harry and said, “Oh Harry, I'm so relieved and happy that you have been placed into Gryffindor.”

“I am happy as well, Hermione, and I am sure that the two of us are going to be great friends.”

“I hope so too, Harry. I truly hope so. For now, let's watch the rest of the Sorting.”

Harry, who thought that Hermione's idea was an excellent one, was more than happy to oblige.

While Harry was being Sorted by the hat, all of the staff turned their attention towards this particular Sorting because they were most anxious to see what house Mr. Potter would be placed in. Out of all the staff who sat there, only Albus Dumbledore and Hagrid remained calm: Both were pretty confident that Harry would join Gryffindor house. They were soon proven to be right and at the sound of Gryffindor being yelled out, both Albus and Hagrid were amongst the first of the professors to applaud for Harry.

As Albus applauded for his adoptive grandson he could see the interaction that went on between Miss Hermione Granger and Mr. Harry Potter. Albus had a hunch that Harry and Hermione just might be destined for each other. While his guesses usually turned out to be right in the end, Albus had no idea as to when this one will come true.

Since he had no idea as to how things would turn out, Albus decided that he would just sit back and allow nature to take its course.

Seeing that there were a few other students who needed to be Sorted, Albus, with the help of his wand, made a loud noise and instantly everyone became silent.

Since he yet again had everyone's attention Albus quickly spoke. “While we are all excited to give Mr. Potter a rather loud applause, the ceremony must continue. Professor McGonagall, if you please.”

The rest of the Sorting didn't take very long to complete once order had been restored among the student population. Dean Thomas, who was next Sorted, was placed into Gryffindor. He was quickly followed by Lisa Turpin, who was placed into Ravenclaw. After that, McGonagall finally reached the name of one Ronald Weasley. Just like the hat did with Malfoy, the hat decided the moment that it was on top of Ron's head

“Ah another Weasley, I just know what to do with you. GRYFFINDOR.”

After a sigh of relief, Ron removed the hat and joined his fellow mates at the table. The last person to be Sorted was a boy named Blaise Zabini, who ended up being placed into Slytherin.

At the completion of the Sorting Ceremony Albus stood and exclaimed, “Let the feast begin!”

Food suddenly appeared on top of the tables. The staff and students helped themselves to whatever they wanted to eat.

At some stage during the wondrous and scrumptious feast, Harry looked up at the staff table so that he could get a good look at the professors who taught at Hogwarts. During his scan of the table, Harry noticed that a professor who had dark long black hair and seemed to be greasy was looking straight back at Harry.

Noticing that this particular professor was looking at him straight in the eye, Harry turned to face a Percy, a prefect sitting quite close to him and said, “Um, I don't mean to be rude, but I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the professor who has the black greasy hair and what subject he teaches?”

The prefect replied, “The name of the professor that you just pointed out, Harry, is Professor Snape. He teaches Potions, although it is widely known that he wants the Defence Against the Dark Arts job.”

“Which professor teaches that subject?”

“That would be Professor Quirrell. He is the one with the purple turban on the back on his head. Are there anymore questions that you have regarding the staff, Harry?”

“I don't have anymore at the moment, Percy, but thanks for asking.”

“That's alright, Harry, and I am glad to be of help.” Both Percy and Harry returned their attention towards the feast.

Harry looked toward where Professor Quirrell was sitting up at the staff table. The moment that Harry had taken one look at the professor, a sudden sharp pain erupted in Harry's lightening-shaped scar. The pain was only there for a brief moment, but it was long enough for Harry to let a soft moan out, and as a result both Hermione and Ron could hear that Harry was in pain.

They turned to face Harry and it was Hermione who said, “Harry, what is it?”

“I just had a rather sharp pain in my scar. While it was only very brief, the pain hurt very much.”

“Are you still in pain? Should I take you to the medical wing?”

“There is no more pain and I don't need to go to the medical wing. Just give me a couple of moments and I should be alright.”

“Alright, Harry, you just sit there and rest for a while.”

At this Ron spoke. “Harry, is there anything that I can do to help?”

“Not at the moment, Ron, but if I think of anything I'll let you know.”

“Ok, Harry.” Ron returned to eating his meal.

The only other main event that occurred during the opening feast was the arrival of the Hogwarts ghosts that freely roamed through out the castle. As they made their arrival known to the students, some of the first years were quite surprised to see them.

After floating through the food that was on the table, the ghost that belonged to Gryffindor, who went by the name of Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, introduced himself to the first years.

Ron instantly said, “I know you. You're Nearly Headless Nick, aren't you?”

“I prefer Sir Nicholas if you don't mind.”

At this Hermione asked, “Nearly headless. How can you be nearly headless?”

“Just like this, miss.”

Nick raised his right hand, grasped his head, and pulled his head aside to reveal that his head was still attached to his neck by a very little piece of skin. Discovering the sight that was before them, Hermione turned her head while Harry just gulped. Seeing that the students were satisfied, Nick replaced his head and floated off to talk to some other ghosts while everyone at the table he had just left helped themselves to dessert.

After allowing the students a couple of moments to finish up their dinner, Albus Dumbledore stood up once more and addressed the Hogwarts population

“Now that we have fed and watered ourselves, it is time for bed. If the fifth year prefects could lead the first years up to their respective house common rooms, that would be greatly appreciated. Just remember, classes start tomorrow, so with that I bid everyone a good night.”

Percy rose from where he was seated and said, “Gryffindor first year students. If you would please follow me I'll escort you safely up to our common room. Please quickly form in because I haven't got all night.”

Harry, Hermione, and the rest of their classmates quickly filed into formation. Seeing that they were all in position, Percy led the way.

As they made their way up towards Gryffindor Tower, Percy informed everyone that the stairs liked to change at will, so they should pay close attention whenever they travelled on them. He also explained all about the trick stair and he cautioned that they should avoid that stair at all costs.

Apart from telling them this and that about Hogwarts, Harry and his friends saw several portraits move as they passed by. Some of them waved, curtseyed, and a few of them welcomed the new students to Hogwarts. At last Percy had brought the group of students to the seventh floor corridor. Upon reaching the seventh floor, Percy quickly led everyone to a portrait that had a Fat Lady in it.

Once everyone had gathered around him, Percy said, “The portrait of the Fat Lady is the entrance to Gryffindor Tower and common room. The only way that she'll allow you to pass her is to give her the correct password.”

“That is indeed correct, young man. Password?”

“Caput draconis,” he answered. As she nodded her affirmation, the Fat Lady swung open to allow Percy and his entourage to enter Gryffindor Tower.

Walking through the portrait, Harry could see that they had entered a room that had several squashy armchairs, tables, a huge fireplace and windows with an excellent view.

After everyone had entered and were gathered around the chairs, Percy quickly said,

“The room that we are currently in is the common room of Gryffindor Tower. This room is a place where you can do homework, play games, or it can be used to socialise with your fellow housemates.

“Now, the stairs that are on the left hand side are for the girls while the boys are on the right. You shall find that your trunks have already have been placed inside of your dormitories. If you don't have any questions, then I bid you all a good night.” Percy left Harry and his fellow classmates to look after themselves.

Seeing that they were now free Hermione turned to face Harry and said, “I don't know about you, Harry, but I am heading up to bed to get a good night's sleep; it has been a very long and tiring day.”

“You're right when you say that, Hermione. I might as well turn in myself because tomorrow is going to be another busy day, considering that classes start tomorrow.”

“In that case, good night, Harry, and I'll see you in the morning.”

“'Night, Hermione.”

After the two friends said their good nights to each other, Hermione headed up her stairs while Harry walk up his own.

Discovering the location of the first year boys' dormitories, Harry entered the room that he was allocated. Upon entering the room, Harry discovered that there were five separate beds and at the end of each bed were the trunks that Percy said were already in place. After locating the trunk that belonged to him, Harry quickly opened it so that he could get access to the boxers that he usually slept in. After getting changed, Harry hopped into bed and closed the curtains that were hung around the bed. Once Harry had made himself comfortable for the night, he slept soundly like a baby.

Chapter Eight: First week of Classes.

The following morning, Harry woke up just after the sun had risen over the eastern horizon. Noticing that it was early in the morning and realising he probably wouldn't get anymore sleep, Harry decided to head down to the common room so that he could write a letter to his parents and send it with his owl.

Making his way down to the common room with a piece of parchment, quill, and ink set in his hands, Harry noticed that he was the first person to be in the common room. He immediately took a seat at one of the tables, choosing a comfortable chair, and composed the following letter to his parents

Dear Mum and Dad,

I am just letting you know that I have arrived safely at Hogwarts and that the Sorting Hat has placed me into the house of Gryffindor, just like you. Hermione has been sorted into Gryffindor as well.

Classes begin today and I must say that I am looking forward to them. I am excited to see what the subjects are about and how the professors handle them.

Yesterday I made another friend, or I hope that we can be friends anyway. The name of my new friend is Ron Weasley. From what I can gather, Ron seems to be a good person but another boy that I met made fun of him because the Weasley family seem to be poor. Do you know anything about the Weasley family at all, Mum and Dad?

The name of the boy who picked on Ron was Draco Malfoy. This Malfoy boy offered his friendship to me, but I turned him down because he made fun of both Ron and Hermione. I don't like this boy very much and I think that the feeling's maybe mutual.

That's it for the time being, so I had better end this letter here. Take care and I'll write again to you soon.

Love,

Harry

Happy with the letter that he just wrote to his parents, Harry carefully folded it in half and placed it inside of an envelope. After quickly writing the postal address on the front, Harry dashed back upstairs to get dressed and organized for the day.

While Harry was upstairs getting ready for the first day of classes, Hermione made her own way to the common room so that she could wait for her friend. Seeing that she had to wait for Harry to arrive, Hermione thought that she would write a letter to her parents, informing them that she had arrived safely and that she and Harry had been both sorted into Gryffindor.

Now showered and dressed in his school robes, Harry made his way back downstairs. Upon reaching the last stair on the staircase, Harry could see that a number of other fellow Gryffindor students were making their way through the portrait to have breakfast. Apart from students leaving the tower, Harry noticed that Hermione was writing a letter. Harry decided to wait quietly until she was finished, not wanting to interrupt. Luckily for Harry, he didn't have to wait very long because the moment that Hermione was done with her letter, she turned around to see if Harry had yet come down.

No sooner had Hermione's eyes noticed that Harry was indeed down than she said, “Are you ready for some breakfast, Harry?”

“Yes, I am, Hermione, and I must say that you had the same idea that I had this morning,” Harry answered, indicating the letter clutched in Hermione's hand.

Seeing that he was pointing to her letter, Hermione said, “I thought that while I was waiting for you to come down, I'd write a letter to my parents informing them that we had arrived safely and that the both of us were Sorted into Gryffindor. I hope you don't mind that I mentioned you in my letter, Harry, but if you do I can easily cross it out and write another one.”

“Hermione, I don't mind in the slightest. Turns out, I mentioned you in my letter as well. Hope you don't mind?”

Hermione smiled and said, “That's ok with me, but if you don't mind, can we head down to breakfast? I'm getting rather hungry.”

“So am I, Hermione, and as it is, other members of our house have already left.”

“In that case, Harry, let's go.”

Both Gryffindors walked through the portrait and headed down to the Great Hall to have breakfast.

Following the exact same path that Percy had shown them the previous night, Harry and Hermione were easily able to find the Great Hall. As they walked through the castle, they paid close attention to where each subject classroom was located: neither wanted to be late for class; each and every student was expected to become familiar with the great castle.

Since there were hardly any students around, Harry and Hermione took advantage of the situation while they could. By the time they had reached the Great Hall, Harry and Hermione had a general idea as to where each class was held.

Entering the Great Hall, the two friends made their way over to Gryffindor table and helped themselves to the food that had just appeared a few moments ago.

While Harry and Hermione were eating their breakfast, Professor McGonagall descended from the staff table and began to hand out the class schedules to each year. The moment that Hermione received her timetable, she quickly looked at it to see what classes that they had first.

After scanning it over she said, “It seems that we have Transfiguration first up today. I wonder what Professor McGonagall is going to be like with that subject?”

“Have no idea, Hermione, but it should be exciting. When are we scheduled to have Potions?”

Glancing again at the schedule, Hermione found the answer and replied, “According to this, Harry,” Hermione placed the piece of paper down so that Harry could see it, “we have it on Friday with Slytherin and it's a double period.”

Harry frowned. “I was hoping that we would have it sooner because I am really looking forward to that subject,” he said in a disappointed tone.

“Don't worry, Harry, Friday will soon get here and when it does you'll be able to enjoy it. For now we had better head for the Transfiguration classroom because I, for one, don't want to be late for class.”

“Right behind you, Hermione.”

With breakfast over and done with, the students started to head off to classes.

Thanks to their previous tour of the castle, Harry and Hermione were among the first students to arrive for class. They easily found the Transfiguration classroom. While they waited to be allowed into the classroom, Harry and Hermione took the opportunity to say hello to their fellow peers.

After chatting for a couple of moments, the door to the classroom opened and McGonagall appeared, saying in her stern voice, “Please head inside and find your seats so that we may commence with today's lesson.”

Hearing the tone of voice that Professor McGonagall spoke in, all of the students quickly filed inside. Once everyone was seated McGonagall walked to the front of the class.

McGonagall, in her commanding voice, began to speak to the group of first years. “Before I begin with today's lesson, I would like to take a couple of moments to say some very important things. With regards to Transfiguration, you shall be learning some very complex spells in my class. If I see any student messing around in my class, then that said student shall be shown the door and won't be allowed back. You have been warned, so I expect your best behaviour at all times.

“Now that's out of the way, please open your textbook to the first task you'll be learning today. Can anyone tell me what this task is?”

Instantly both Harry and Hermione raised a hand. McGonagall, with a wave of her hand, indicated for Hermione to answer.

“Professor, the first thing that we'll be learning to transfigure is a match stick into a needle.”

“That is correct, Miss Granger. Five points for Gryffindor.”

At this, Hermione smiled while McGonagall addressed the rest of the class.

“As Miss Granger has just mentioned, we shall be turning a match stick into a needle. Now, if you can quickly read and answer the questions that are in your textbooks, then we'll have a go at transfiguration,” she said, taking a seat behind her desk as the class started on the theory work that they needed to complete.

However, just as the class was getting stuck into the work, the classroom door opened up to reveal two students: Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom.

Noticing the two newcomers, Professor McGonagall said, “Mr. Weasley, and Mr. Longbottom, is there a reason as to why you're both late to attend my lesson?”

It was Ron who responded:

“The both of us got lost, Professor.”

“To make things easier for you both, maybe I should transfigure Mr. Longbottom into a watch so that you'll be on time.”

Draco and the other Slytherins sniggered amongst themselves.

At the sound of their laughter, McGonagall turned and said to the Slytherins, “I don't think that this is something to laugh about. Five points from Slytherin.”

Hearing that they just lost their house points, Draco and the rest of his house instantly became quiet and resumed their work. Happy the Slytherins were under control, McGonagall turned back to Ron and Neville.

“The next time that you are late to my class, I shall be forced to deduct points from your house. The only time that you'll be excused for being late is if you have a signed note from either a professor, or from Madam Pomfrey, explaining why you're late. I trust that you can find your seats.”

Ron and Neville quickly took the last seats and Minerva returned her attention to what she was doing before Ron and Neville interrupted her class.

About half an hour later, most of the class had finished reading and answering the questions. Noticing that the majority had completed the necessary work, McGonagall got up and announced, “It's now time to practice the actual transfiguration. Once you have all received a match stick, I would like for you all to attempt to transfigure your stick into a pin. Don't worry if you don't get it on your first attempt; for some students it's easy and for others it's rather difficult. Miss Patil, would you be so kind as to hand out the matchsticks for me?”

“Of course, Professor,” Parvati said before taking the matches from McGonagall and handed them around the class.

For the rest of the lesson, the first years practiced changing the matches into sewing needles. Some of the students found it rather difficult to complete the transfiguration, just as McGonagall had said. Unlike Harry, Hermione found it very easy to do. Hermione was able to master the transfiguration on her very first attempt while Harry had to take three turns before he got the hang of it. By the time that McGonagall was finally able to inspect Harry and Hermione's work, she was amazed to see two perfect needles.

After picking them up to inspect them, McGonagall said to the pair, “Mr. Potter and Miss Granger, I must say that I am rather impressed with your work. Five points to Gryffindor for your successful transfiguration.”

At this both Harry and Hermione smiled but before they could congratulate one another, the bell rang.

McGonagall quickly said, “For homework, I want those of you who haven't yet mastered the transfiguration to practice. Also, I want a summary of the theory to be written on a separate piece of parchment. Due next lesson.”

After writing down the homework that they needed to complete, everyone headed to their next lesson, which just happened to be History of Magic.

History of Magic was rather quite boring for the majority of the first year students. It's taught by Professor Binns, a ghost who drones on and on all the time. As a result, the students can't maintain their focus. In the end, no one pays attention to what Binns says and everyone falls asleep.

While the majority of the class was either bored or not interested in what Binns had to say about the goblins, Harry and Hermione were extremely busy with writing down as many notes as they possibly could on the subject. By the time that class ended, between the two of them, Harry and Hermione had a good deal of notes.

As they were packing away their things, Ron came over and said, “Blimey, Harry, how many notes did you write down while Binns talked away?”

“I believe that I have about 2-3 parchments worth of notes that shall come in handy for the homework that Professor Binns has set for us.”

“Um Harry, could I possibly borrow your notes because I kind of fell asleep during class.”

At this, Hermione jumped in. “Ron, I don't think that Harry should allow you to borrow his notes so that you can complete your homework.”

“What's wrong with borrowing Harry's notes from class, Hermione?”

“Because it's your own fault that you fell asleep in class when you should have taken notes of your own.”

Seeing the beginnings of an argument, Harry decided that he had better change the subject.

“Ron, Hermione, why don't we head to the Great Hall so that we can have lunch?”

“That's a good idea, Harry. I wonder what's for lunch?”

“I don't know, Ron, but let's go and find out.” That said and done, Harry, Hermione, and Ron headed off to have lunch.

After lunch was over, Harry and Hermione had a little bit of time to spare so they both headed up to the Owlery so that they could send the letters that they had written to their respective parents.

Upon reaching the Owlery that housed the school owls and owls that the students brought with them to Hogwarts, Harry and Hermione were both surprised to see the number of owls that stayed at Hogwarts. From the floor to the ceiling, there were rows and rows of owls, perched on nests and rafters waiting to be used to deliver mail.

Standing in the doorway, Harry looked around the room so that he could find his owl, Hedwig. It didn't take long for Harry to spot Hedwig because there were not many snowy white owls. The moment that Harry spotted Hedwig, he held out his hand and called her.

“Hedwig!”

At the sound of her name, Hedwig looked down to see what was the matter. Spotting her owner, she instantly left her perch and flew to Harry.

Once she was sitting comfortably on Harry's forearm, Harry said, “Hedwig, can you please deliver this letter to Mum and Dad for me?”

She happily hooted in response and held out her leg so that Harry could attach the letter. After several failed attempts to tie the letter on with one hand, an exasperated Harry turned to Hermione and said, “Hermione can you…”

“Of course, Harry.”

No further words needed to be said. Hermione carefully and gently attached Harry's letter to Hedwig. Once this was done, Harry took Hedwig outside of the Owlery so that he could send her off with her first mail delivery. No sooner had Hedwig taken flight into the air than Harry headed back inside the Owlery so that he could return the favour to Hermione.

He returned to find Hermione was struggling with the brown owl that she had chosen. Seeing that his friend was having trouble with the owl, Harry said, “Here, Hermione, allow me to return the favour.”

Harry gently took control of the owl so that Hermione could fasten the letter to the owl's talons. Hermione told the owl where to take the letter, and Harry stretched out his arm for the bird to take flight. After watching the owl disappear, Harry and Hermione departed from the Owlery and headed back to the castle to attend afternoon classes.

Over the next couple of days, classes continued to proceed. The next couple of lessons that the first years experienced were Herbology, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy, and Potions.

Herbology was a subject that dealt with all kind of plants and fungi. With this subject, they visited the greenhouses on a regular basis and it was there that they were taught how to look after and care for the plants. It was taught by a dumpy witch named Professor Sprout.

Among the students who studied this subject, it came as a complete surprise to everyone that it was Neville Longbottom who seemed to know just what to do when it came to caring for the plants. From what Professor Sprout could see, she was looking forward to seeing how Neville would progress in her lessons.

Charms dealt with enchanting objects. It can also cause people to laugh, dance, and do a whole range of other useful things. Professor Flitwick, a very short person with a squeaky voice, taught this subject. Being so small, he needed to stand on a pile of cushions so that the students could see, watch, and learn what he says and does. With regards to Harry's first lesson in Charms, Professor Flitwick was so thrilled that he had `Harry Potter' in his class that he fell from his pile of cushions with excitement.

With regards to D.A.D.A., all of the first years were very anxious to see what they would be learning in this class. Usually in Defense, everyone is taught how to defend oneself, but not with Professor Quirrell. All of the first years were disappointed with how he taught the class. Whenever Harry and the rest of his year had D.A.D.A., they could always smell a strong odour of garlic in the atmosphere.

Every Wednesday night, the students had Astronomy. With this subject, Harry and the other first year students learned about the names of planets, stars, and the movement of planets. After the first night of studying the planets, some of the first year students found this subject to be very exciting, while others found it to be quite boring and dull.

As for Harry, he actually discovered that Astronomy was rather exciting to study and as it turned out, Hermione shared Harry's sentiments about the subject. With having experienced all of these subjects, there was now only one left, and yes, it was Potions.

On Friday morning, the day that the first years were scheduled to have Potions had finally arrived. Since Harry had been excited all week with the prospect of finally learning the subject of Potions, he got up early and dressed as quickly as possible so that he could get organized for today's class. However, the first thing that Harry had to do before he even went off to class was to have breakfast.

As all the students ate breakfast, it was a custom that the owls would bring the daily mail to the staff and teachers. Ever since Harry and Hermione had posted their letters to home, every morning they had kept watch to see if they would get a response. Unfortunately for them both, they had not yet received a reply, but little did they know that in today's mail, Harry and Hermione would each have a reply letter sent to them by their respective parents.

Breakfast was about half way through when all of a sudden the population of Hogwarts could hear the sounds of flying and screeching of the daily post owls. Everyone in the Hall immediately looked up to see if the owls had brought them any mail.

As the owls came flooding into the Hall from the windows that were designed specifically for the owls, Harry spotted a very familiar snowy white owl. At the sight of Hedwig fast approaching, Harry began to get excited; he was finally getting a letter from his parents. Just before Hedwig landed near her master, Harry noticed that instead of having one letter, Hedwig instead had two envelopes. Seeing this, Harry didn't know what to make of it, but before he could even say anything, Hedwig landed beside her owner and extended her leg so that Harry could remove the letters. After untying the two letters from her leg, Harry read the addresses on the front of each envelope.

Mr. Harry Potter

The Great Hall

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Seeing that the first letter was for him, Harry placed it down onto the table and looked at the address on the second letter. What Harry saw came as a complete surprise.

Miss Hermione Granger

The Great Hall

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Discovering that the second letter was for Hermione, Harry turned to his friend. “Um, Hermione, I don't know how this happened but it seems to me that Hedwig has delivered a letter to you,” he said, handing the letter to Hermione. At this Harry showed the letter to Hermione.

Hermione exclaimed, “Oh good, my idea worked! Thanks, Hedwig!”

Hedwig hooted happily in response. By now Harry was starting to wonder what was going on. Before he could even say a word Hermione began to explain.

“Harry, I hope that you're not annoyed, but after the owls took our letters, I realised that the school owls wouldn't stay around to bring back a letter. Since my parents wouldn't be able to respond via owl post, I ask Professor McGonagall if she could think of a way that I could receive mail from my parents. She said that there might be a way, but first she had to speak to the headmaster about it. As it turns out, the idea was to ask your parents to first send Hedwig to my house to pick up any letters that my parents wanted to send to me. Hedwig could then make her way to Hogwarts with letters for the both of us. Do you mind, Harry?” Hermione glanced worriedly at Harry, looking for any sign of vexation

Harry replied, “Hermione, while I am a little disappointed that you didn't ask me in the first place to borrow, Hedwig, I think that was an excellent idea that you came up with. In the future, if you want to borrow Hedwig, just ask and I'll be more than happy to allow you to use her. I can never be mad with you; you saw a problem and you went about to seek a solution and I think that solution was a good one.”

“Does that mean were still friends, Harry?”

“Yes, Hermione, we're still friends, and if you ever have a problem don't hesitate to ask me for help because that's what friends do. We help each other out whenever we have problems.”

It was at this moment that Professor McGonagall said, “Those were very kind and considerate words, Mr. Potter. I believe that has earned you ten points to Gryffindor. Now if you don't want me to deduct points, then I suggest that you quickly finish up because classes shall be starting soon.”

At the sound of this, Harry and Hermione quickly finished up breakfast and headed down to the dungeons where Potions was taught.

While Harry and Hermione were finishing up their meal, Minerva McGonagall couldn't believe what she had just witnessed between Harry and Hermione. The last time that she had seen something like this happen was when Lily Potter was at Hogwarts. Lily Potter had a loving and caring nature and she always understood others. There was no doubt in Minerva's eyes that Harry had those exact same traits. From the scene that took place before her, Minerva knew that Harry and Hermione were indeed blessed to have each other as friends and she was looking forward to see how this special friendship would develop, but for now Minerva had to head back to her classroom so that she could teach her next class.

Standing down in the dark and usually chilly dungeons where Potions was taught at Hogwarts, the first year students of Gryffindor and Slytherin stood outside waiting patiently to be allowed into the classroom. Before long, the door opened up and the students filed into the room and took their seats.

No sooner were they seated than Professor Snape, who always wore black robes, swept into the room and said, “There shall be no foolish wand waving in this class. As such, I don't expect you all to understand the delegate nature of brewing potions. I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopped death -- providing that none of you are the dunderheads that I usually have to teach,” then took the roll. Once he had completed this task, Snape decided to see if Harry had indeed inherited Lily's Potions skills.

“Now, before we begin to brew a simple potion to cure boils, let's see how good you are at Potions, especially Harry Potter, who is the new celebrity. Tell me, Potter, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?”

Harry instantly responded with, “Professor, I believe that it would make a potion so powerful that who ever drinks it falls asleep. The potion is known as Draught of Living Death.”

Snape was amazed by Harry's answer so he asked a second question.

“That's correct, Potter. Where would you find a bezoar if I told you to find one for me, Potter?”

“Sir, a bezoar is a stone that is taken from the stomach of a goat. It can save your life from most poisons, as well.”

By now Snape could see that Harry had indeed inherited Lily's potion knowledge, so with this he asked one more question:

“You're once again correct. Now tell me, Potter, what is the difference monkshood and wolfsbane?” Snape hoped that this time Harry would be stumped. Unfortunately, he was about to be proved wrong.

“Professor, there is no difference between them because they are the same plant. This plant also goes by the name of Aconite.”

At the end of hearing that answer, Snape was simply stunned because Harry Potter had just successfully answered all three questions. Not to mention that he gave a full answer that would easily earn him an outstanding result on any exam. Snape was easily convinced that at last he wouldn't have yet another dunderheaded student. Also, while he looked and judged Harry, Severus remembered the conversation he had with the headmaster before school started. Since he didn't want to show open favouritism to Potter, he instead offered the following compliment to Harry:

“Mr Potter, I must say that I am rather impressed with your knowledge. With regards to you brewing potions, I expect your work to be of the highest quality because for once, I have a student who appears to know this subject.” At this Snape looked up from where he was standing in front of Harry and continued, “For today's lesson, we shall be brewing a simple potion that can cure boils. You shall find on the board the list of ingredients and step-by-step instructions as to how you would brew this potion. Whatever you do, do not place the porcupine quills into the potion until you have removed the cauldron from the fire. Why are you all standing around, get a move on.”

At hearing this, the students quickly got busy with brewing the potion.

As they were all making the potion that was assigned for the day, Professor Snape made his way around the classroom to see how everyone was coming along with his or her work. While he was at it, Snape took it upon himself to compliment those who were working really well. Some of the students that Snape liked very much were Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter, and, to her surprise, Hermione Granger. Students that Snape didn't like at all were Neville Longbottom and Ronald Weasley, thanks to the incident that had occurred at their work bench.

“Now who do I have working here? Ah, it seems to me that we have Neville Longbottom and another Weasley. Tell me, Weasley, are you quite capable of brewing potions, or are you like your annoying twin brothers?”

Before Ron could even respond to that question, Neville placed the porcupine quills into the potion without removing it from the flames.

Acrid green smoke filled the air and a loud hissing noise sounded in the dungeon. Before Snape could react, some of the potion flew up into the air and landed on his face. Moment that this happened, Snape waved his wand and banished Neville's cauldron before anyone else could be hit and sprout very nasty boils. Once the threat of the cauldron was neutralised, Snape rounded on both Neville and Ron.

“Mr. Longbottom, it is quite clear to me that you can't follow a set of simple instructions. Weren't you warned at the beginning of the lesson that you first had to remove your cauldron from the fire before adding the porcupine quills?”

“Yes, Professor,” Neville admitted quietly.

“As for you, Weasley, why didn't you try to stop him, considering that you were sitting beside him. Because of your carelessness the both of you have just cost ten points each from Gryffindor.” That said, Snape stormed off to his office so that he could tend to the boils that he had just received.

By the time that class was close to ending, all of the students had finished brewing their potion and they were busy with tidying up the work benches. For Harry and Hermione, they found that the potion was rather easy to brew. They had followed the instructions step by step, and once they had added the last ingredient (after removing their cauldron from the fire), the potion turned out exactly as the directions said it would. Seeing that they had successfully brewed the potion, they poured a sample into a vial so that they could hand it in to Professor Snape.

At the sound of the bell that signalled the end of class, everyone approached Professor Snape's desk with a sample of the potion that they had brewed. Once he had ticked off their names and collected the samples from each student, Snape indicated that they were free.

As Snape took Harry's sample, he had a good look at it. Seeing that the potion was one hundred percent right he said to Harry, “By the looks of this sample potion, Potter, I must say that I am rather impressed. I believe that this has earned you top marks and I expect that you shall keep to this high standard.”

“Thank you, Professor, and I'll do my very best to ensure that my potions are of the highest quality.”

“That is what I like to hear, Potter. Now go and have lunch.”

Hearing that he was dismissed, Harry headed towards the door where Hermione was waiting for him. No sooner had they exited the classroom and were heading towards the Great Hall for lunch than Hermione said, “Well done, Harry. You were great with how you answered those questions, not to mention the fact that your potion turned out great.”

“Thanks, Hermione, and as I said, I really looked forward to today's class. It's just a pity that I have to wait a whole week until our next Potions class.”

At this Ron said, “Why is it that you can't wait for the next Potions class? Is Snape going to award you house points, Harry, or is he going to take them away from Gryffindor like he did to me?”

“I know the subject and I really enjoy brewing potions,” Harry explained. “As for the house points, it doesn't bother me if Professor Snape gives or takes them: I found the compliment that he gave me was better than any points that could have been awarded. It wasn't my fault that Neville made a simple mistake. Professor Snape had to deal with the situation.”

Hermione joined the conversation and said, “Ron, if anything, it won't take long to get those points back because it's only the first week of class. Now if you don't mind, I would like to have lunch. Are you coming, Harry?”

“Right behind you, Hermione. What about you, Ron?” Harry asked, glancing at Ron.

Ron just headed towards the Great Hall without even giving so much as a response back to Harry.

Hermione simply said, “Don't worry about Ron, Harry. He is just a little bit jealous that Professor Snape was nice to you when he wasn't to him. He just needs to cool down for a while. Come on, let's have lunch, and afterwards we're visiting your friend Hagrid, aren't we?”

At the mention of Hagrid's name, Harry instantly brightened up and said, “Yes, we are, and I can't wait for you to meet him. Come on, the sooner we eat lunch, the sooner we can go and visit Hagrid,” as the two friends headed off to have lunch in the Great Hall.

While Harry and Hermione were eating lunch, they both remembered that they hadn't opened up their mail. Seeing that they had plenty of time, they finally opened their letters from home.

Dear Harry,

Your father and I are very pleased and proud that you have been sorted into Gryffindor. While we were both expecting you to be placed in Gryffindor, hearing the news from you made us both very happy.

We are happy that you met and have made friends with this Ron Weasley. From what we know of Ron's family, it is true that they may be poor, but they are a very kind and loving family.

Harry, with regards to Draco Malfoy that you mentioned in your letter, it is best that you kept a close eye on him because he and his family are nothing but trouble. It was a good thing that you turned down his friendship, and we're proud of how you handled that situation.

Both of us are also pleased that your friend Hermione has been sorted into Gryffindor as well. Please extend our congratulations to her.

Oh well, that's about it for now because your father is on his way back to work as am I. Keep in touch, Harry, and just remember we are only an owl away.

Love always,

Mum and Dad

P.S. Harry, I have taken the liberty of enclosing some of the photos that were taken at the platform before you and Hermione caught the train. Please show them to Hermione so that she can owl some to her parents.

Reading about the pictures on the bottom of the letter, Harry picked up the envelope so that he could remove them. No sooner had he done this than he said, “Hermione, here are the pictures that my parents took. You can choose whatever ones you like so that you can owl them to your parents. Also, my parents asked me to pass on their congratulations to you for being placed into Gryffindor as well.”

“Thank you, Harry, and by the way, my parents pass on their own regards as well. Now, let's have a look at these pictures so that I can decide which ones I want to send home to Mum and Dad.”

By the time that they had finished looking at the photos, Hermione ended up choosing a couple of herself and some with the two of them in the photo. With regards to single photos of Harry, Hermione kept them on the table because she didn't think that it was right that she should send single pictures of Harry home. For Harry, he simply decided to keep a copy of all the photos.

After they had selected the photos that they wanted, Harry placed the leftovers into his bag and said, “Hermione, seeing that we have finished looking over the photos, would you like to head down to Hagrid's now?”

“I think that now would be the perfect time to visit him, Harry. Besides, I can't wait to meet him,” Hermione answered enthusiastically.

“In that case, let's go, and trust me, Hermione, you're in for an exciting time.”

Both Harry and Hermione got up from where they were sitting at the table and made their way down to Hagrid's hut.

After exiting the castle through the great doors, Harry and Hermione followed the long path that led the way down to the hut where Hagrid lived. Walking along the trail, they were able, for the first time, to have a decent look outside. From what Harry and Hermione could see, there was indeed a forest on the boundary of the school, plenty of open space with an abundance of green grass, and there was also a huge lake containing gallons of water.

As Harry and Hermione were heading towards Hagrid's cabin, Hagrid, who had just walked past the window that was located just near the front door, noticed that some students were coming to pay him a visit. Hagrid immediately put the kettle on the fireplace so that they could have a cup of tea. Hagrid only just had enough time to set all the things onto the table when he heard a knock on his front door.

At the sound of the knock Hagrid said, “Be right there,” as he strode to the door and opened it.

No sooner had he opened the door than Hagrid continued with, “Harry, I'm so glad yeh came to visit. I see yeh've brought a friend with yeh as well,” turning his focus towards Hermione.

“Hagrid, this is my friend Hermione Granger. Hermione, this is Hagrid, whom I mentioned to you about,” said Harry, remembering his manners.

At this Hermione said, “I am pleased to meet you, Hagrid.”

“Any friend of Harry's, Hermione, is a friend of mine. Would both of yeh like ter come inside and have a cup of tea?”

“Thank you, Hagrid. Harry and I would like that.”

“Come in and make yerselves comfortable while I make the tea, ” said Hagrid, stepping aside so that he could allow his guests to enter his home.

Crossing over the threshold, Harry and Hermione quickly took a seat at the table while Hagrid made the tea. In the meantime, Harry and Hermione took the opportunity to have a look around Hagrid's hut. From where they were sitting, they could see that there was a huge bed, covered with a patchwork quilt. There was also a chest of draws, cupboards, a fireplace where Hagrid was busy at work, and in one corner was a basket that belonged to Hagrid's dog, Fang. Looking up towards the roof, Harry and Hermione could see that several hams and dead pheasants were hung on strings that were attached to the rafters. They were just returning their focus to where they were sitting when Hagrid brought a tray over to the table that had three mugs, a tea pot, milk, and sugar. After pouring the tea and placing the milk and sugar into it and taking a seat himself, Hagrid spoke.

“So Harry, Hermione, how was your firs' week o' classes?”

It was Hermione who first answered. “Classes were great, Hagrid, and I won some points for Gryffindor as well.”

“Tha's great ter hear, Hermione. What about you, Harry?”

“I enjoyed them, except for when the students and teachers got all excited about me being here. Probably the classes that I enjoyed most were Potions, Transfiguration, and Charms. History of Magic was a little boring though.”

At this Hagrid chuckled and said, “'Fraid I have ter agree with yeh there, Harry. Professor Binns was the teacher in my day and I mus' admit that I too fell asleep during his lessons.”

“How long ago was that, Hagrid?”

“Ah, that was about fifty years ago. What else have you done this week?”

“Apart from going to classes and doing homework, there isn't much else that has been happening. Probably the biggest thing that has happened is that all the students have been pointing and talking about me amongst themselves.”

“Tha's to be expected, Harry, and with time tha' will pass over.” Hagrid turned to face Hermione and continue by saying, “Hermione, since I already know so much about Harry, why don't yeh tell me about yerself?”

“Well, I am a Muggle-born witch. After it was discovered that I was a witch, both of my parents were quite surprised. Since my parents are…” With that Hermione went on to tell Hagrid all about her parents and the things that she liked.

Since Harry already heard about the things that Hermione was telling Hagrid, Harry's attention drifted to a newspaper sitting on the table. Seeing that both Hagrid and Hermione were busy talking and listening to each other, Harry decided that he would have a look at the paper. The moment that Harry opened the paper to read, he was quite surprised and shocked to see what was on the front page of the Daily Prophet.

Latest News With Regards To the Break in of Gringotts Bank

On the first of August, Gringotts Wizard Bank high security vault was mysteriously broken into.

As this comes as a huge shock to all the wizarding community, the goblins have assured us that all the vaults are secure and that no valuables were stolen.

While we aren't privileged to all the details, we have been told that the vault in question, 713, had in fact been emptied earlier in the same day.

What important and interesting objects were held in the vault? Gringotts goblins had this to say in response: “Mind your own business because this doesn't concern you. Goblins are handling the investigation and if we discover anything of importance we'll contact you. For now, allow us to proceed in our own way.”

After reading about the article that concerned about the attempted break in, Harry placed the paper back down on the table and said, “Hagrid, do you know anything about the break in at Gringotts?”

Hagrid was busily listening to Hermione, but at the sound of Harry's voice, Hagrid turned his full attention towards Harry and asked, “What was that yeh just mentioned, Harry?”

“I asked if you knew anything about the break in at Gringotts?” Harry repeated, indicating to both Hagrid and Hermione the newspaper that had the article about the break in.

No sooner had Hermione heard about this than she quickly got up from where she was sitting and began busily reading the paper. By the time that Hermione had finished reading all about what happened at Gringotts, she couldn't believe that someone would dare try to rob one of the most secured places.

Hermione said, “What was so special about the item that was stored in vault 713 that drew the attention of the burglar? Who was this person? How did they get past the security?”

“I don't know, Hermione, but whoever it was, their attempt was unsuccessful. Although, Hagrid, you still haven't answered my question.”

Hagrid's only reply was, “Sorry, Harry, but my lips are sealed. If I did know anything, which I don't, I wouldn't tell yeh anything because this matter is Hogwarts business. The best thing tha' yeh can do is forge' all about this and concentrate on yer classes.”

Hearing Hagrid's response, Harry just nodded and said, “You're right, Hagrid, and I am sorry that I brought it up.”

“Don't worry about it, Harry, and there is no need ter be sorry because yeh were jus' curious about it. Now, tell me what else has been happening while I make us a fresh pot of tea.”

With a fresh pot of tea made, Harry, Hermione, and Hagrid spent the remainder of the afternoon getting to know each other. Unbeknown to either Hermione or Hagrid, Harry was going to find out all that he possibly could about the person who tried to break into Gringotts and what was so special about the item that had drawn the attention of a would-be burglar.
