You Know You're Better Than This Disclaimer: I do not own anything regarding the world of Harry Potter. Only the plot is mine. Author's Note: Just a short, little something I wrote last year. Title comes from an Imogen Heap song (love her music). It's a one shot since nothing has come to me to add to it. Hope you enjoy it. Have You Got it in You? She waited nervously, bouncing from foot to foot slightly. Her hands were warm and a little red from wringing them together for so long. Her hair showed her frazzled state, pieces falling from her hastily put together ponytail, curling around her worried face. All she needed was a sign; sign to prove that the meeting that was taking place in the kitchen was just that—a meeting. But things were escalating in their world and the gut feeling that plagued Hermione often was making its presence known and she knew not to ignore it. Lupin, Tonks, and a few others had shown up about an hour ago to speak with Harry and at that moment a feeling of dread filled her. Her stomach felt as if a lead weight had settled in it. Her shoulders were tight and she could not remember when she had felt this cold. Hermione could not tear her eyes away from the door leading into the kitchen. Just beyond that door a plan was being made, a future decided. It killed her to know that right now Harry was being faced with what could possibly be…no, stop that train of thought right now. She had already tried pressing her ear against the door, but they had obviously guarded it. What were they thinking? She would find out what was going on from Harry. He'd tell her, Harry always tells her. But she couldn't help but think that maybe he wouldn't. She had known him from almost seven years now and he was known for hiding things from her. Especially if he thought it was for her own good. The hiding seemed to have increased since Dumbledore's funeral. When she tried discussing his behavior with Ron, he responded in typical fashion: a shrug of his shoulders and a “he's probably got a lot on his mind and he doesn't need you nagging him.” Honestly! She realized that, but it was her job to worry. He needed someone to worry about him instead of just expecting him to be fine and save them all. It wasn't as if she could help it anyway, she had been worrying about him since he was eleven. It was second nature to her by now. Hermione was pulled back to the present when the door began to open. She stopped her fidgeting as Harry appeared. The look that graced his face spoke volumes. Sheer determination mixed with a side of fear. This was it. He was leaving. As he brushed by her, she opened her mouth to speak, but stopped herself. Harry wouldn't look at her. He wasn't going to say anything to her? He was just going to go to his room? Hermione hurried up the stairs after him. By the time she caught up, he was throwing the door shut of the room he and Ron shared. Hermione stopped the door and entered the room to find Harry packing. Judging by his movements, he was on autopilot. He seemed to just be grabbing random items and not thinking about what he might really need. `What do you take with you to fight evil?' she wondered. Hermione went over to his dresser and opened the top drawer only to shut it quickly. Leave him to pack those things. The second drawer held t-shirts. He would need those, but how many? How long would they be gone? Shaking her head, she grabbed a few and went to the rucksack he was stuffing full. At once she dumped the random items he put inside, and replaced them with the t-shirts. Once they were placed, she found some jeans in another drawer and added them. Without looking at Harry, she began to tell him what else he would need, “You'll need your toothbrush and paste, your defense books, trainers…do you think one pair is enough? Oh and socks. I can get those if you want me to, but some of the other things you'll want to get yourself.” Not getting a response from him made her turn around. Harry stood in the middle of the room and stared blankly at her. In one hand was a picture frame and in the other held his wand. “Are you okay?” Hermione stepped closer to him. “Harry?” Hearing his name seemed to shake him from his haze. “I have to go. They know where he is, so now is the time to…” his voice died off as he looked down at his shoes. Hearing the words made the weight in Hermione's stomach drop like she just went down a steep hill too quickly. “I know.” “I don't think I'm ready.” His voice was almost a whisper as if he thought speaking the words any louder would alert someone of his doubt. Hermione threw her arms around him. “You're ready. You have been ready for a long time.” Her arms tighten. “But I don't think I am.” Her words that were spoken softly in his ear made Harry drop the things he was holding and wrap his arms around her. It was too much, too soon. He'd been expecting to hear the news, but waiting for it and then actually hearing it…Suddenly all the doubts he had were deafening. He couldn't think beyond the moment. If he did, he didn't think he could go through with it. They stood like that for several moments until she had to know for sure. “You're leaving tonight?” Harry pulled away before answering, “As soon as possible. They think he could move again.” “So we better hurry. You finish packing your stuff and I'll grab my bag. I've had one ready.” Hermione headed towards the door. “I'll find Ron and tell him to come up and start…” her words were cut off by Harry grabbing her arm, “You're not coming. Both of you are staying here.” He let go and went back to gathering his things. Hermione knew to expect this from him. “Of course we're coming with you. Don't be stubborn; you know we're going, so save the heroics and finish packing. I'll send Ron.” Once she shut the door, she felt the fear settle in her. This was it. We're they ready? `Stop thinking about it,' she told herself. Taking a deep breath, she pushed herself away from the door and went to grab her bag. “Hey, I was looking for you. Have you seen Harry, `cause there's something I need to ask him.” Ron's voice had startled her. “Ron! Don't sneak up on people like that.” Hermione placed a hand over her heart as if that would calm her already uneasy nerves. “Sorry, didn't think I was that loud.” Noticing the look on her face he asked, “What's going on? Is he brooding again?” Hermione shook her as she passed him on her way to her room, “No. You need to pack, we're leaving.” This was it. They had been waiting for this and here it was. She knew they were all worried that they weren't ready. That they were only children. They were ready. She knew it in her heart that they could do this. They would go and finish this war that began before any of them were born and return to try and continue their lives. Let me know your thoughts… -->
