Lily hears James singing a love song.
I don’t own HP.
Lily Evans was an early riser. But even for her, 4:30 was really pushing it. She sighed, got up, pulled on a shirt, and went down to the common room. sighing again, she wandered over to the window and looked outside. There was a scarf on the outside of the window, on the ledge. Odd. Well, she better get it. She opened the window and reached out to grab it. Doing so she heard something. It sounded like...singing. Even more odd. Listening closely, she could tell it was a man singing, and it sounded like...James Potter. She hesitated for a second, then decided it would be best to find out what he was up to. Sneaking out of the Common Room, and hurrying along the corridors, she reached the Entrance Hall. Slipping outside, she followed the singing all the way to the Whomping Willow. Confused, she turned and hid behind some shrubbery to watch the tree, adding a Disillusionment Charm as well. Watching and waiting for a few moments, she jumped as the tree suddenly froze. The singing grew louder, and she could now make out words:
Now I'm praying to God
You'll give me one more chance, girl
I'll be there for you
These five words I swear to you
When you breathe I want to be the air for you
I'll be there for you
I'd live and I'd die for you
Steal the sun from the sky for you
Words can't say what a love can do
I'll be there for you
I know you know we're had some good times
How they have their own hiding place
I can promise you tomorrow
But I can't buy back yesterday
And baby you know my hands are dirty
But I wanted to be your valentine
I'll be the water when you get thirsty, baby
When you get drink, I'll be the wine
I'll be there for you
These five words I swear to you
When you breathe I want to be the air for you
I'll be there for you
I'd live and I'd die for you
Steal the sun from the sky for you
Words can't say what a love can do
I'll be there for you
And I wasn't there when you were happy
I wasn't there when you were down
I didn't mean to miss your birthday, baby
I wish I'd seen you blow those candles out
I'll be there for you
These five words I swear to you
When you breathe I want to be the air for you
I'll be there for you
I'd live and I'd die for you
Steal the sun from the sky for you
Words can't say what a love can do
I'll be there for you
She jumped again as, halfway through the song, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew came around the Whomping Willow. James was singing, rather well, actually, Sirius was sending a Silencing Charm at the castle, and Peter was helping a rather pale Remus along. They wandered off around the castle, and Lily followed. Soon, James was done singing, and the other three cheered him. Sirius turned to James.
“Singing about Evans again, I take it, Prongs?” he asked.
“Who else would I sing a love song to?” James asked in way of an answer.
“Point taken.”
A few moments of silence, then James sighed.
“Why do I love her so much?”
Noone answered. Lily sucked in a breath. Sure, he had told her he loved her before, but she had always assumed it was him merely trying to get her to go out with him. Now, he sounded sincere.
A few more seconds of silence.
“HOW THE HELL CAN I LOVE HER SO MUCH? SHE HATES ME!” James bellowed at the sky. “For that matter, how can she hate me? She doesn’t even know me.”
Sirius looked sympathetic.
“I can’t say I know how you feel. Maybe you should move on.”
James stopped abruptly.
“Padfoot, I don’t think you get it. I love her. I would do anything, anything, to keep her safe. Anything. She means more to me than anything. I know that I barely know her, but I would give up the world for her. She is the first thing I think of in the mornings, and the last thing I think of at night. I can’t get her off my mind. Not that I try that hard, but still. Every bloody morning I wake up, and think, this is the day. Today she’ll say yes. Today we’ll be together. And the when she rejects me, throws me away, my heart bleeds and I feel like dying. And after that I live for the next day, because then maybe she’ll say yes. That’s how I have lived the last three years of my life.”
More silence followed. Lily took a breath and lifted the Disillusionment Charm. She coughed. James and Sirius whirled around, and Peter and Remus stepped to the side.
“L-Lily,” James said. He sounded odd. Fear? Maybe.
“How long have you been there?” Sirius asked.
Lily took another deep breath. “Long enough.” She marched up to James. He was studiously look anywhere but at her.
“James. Look at me.” She ordered. He slowly brought his gaze down to her eyes.
“Yes, Evans?” He asked, still with that undescribable emotion in his voice.
“You were praying for another chance? Well, you got one.” She said, and kissed him. He pulled back after quite a few minutes.
“Lily” he said, but he didn’t sound like himself. “Lily wake up.”
With a almighty yawn, Lily Potter sat up.
“Yes dear?” She asked, turning to her husband.
James grinned. “Dreaming about my singing again?”
She smiled. “Only that one song.” And she pulled him down into a kiss.
