Flirting in Musical Lyrics
Harry entered the Gryffindor common room after a good Saturday morning outing at the lake doing nothing but relaxing under the shade of a tree.
His relaxed state made him almost forget to acknowledge the presence of his friend, Hermione Granger.
The Boy Who Lived was about to go up to his dormitory when he heard the sound of three thumps.
Thump
Thump
Thump
He stopped on his tracks.
“The door?” he wondered and looked at the portrait hole and saw the thumping came from his left. It was Hermione.
She was looking at him as she thumped her ink bottle on the table.
Harry sighed and walked towards her. If Hermione is looking at Harry, then that means she needs something from him. He walked towards her and saw her Potion's essay laid out on the table already graded by Snape, the Potions Master.
“What did you get?” Harry asked as he walked towards her
“I got an `O'” she replied
“Well, I know you… you're intelligent” he smirked as he leaned on the table, looking at her essay which had a large black “O” for Outstanding.
“Oh, it's nothing, it's just only me” she said modestly with a ginger demeanor “Before the essay I kind of had cold feet but oh well… Oh by the way, can you help me refill my ink bottle?”
Then she gave him a sudden curious look.
“What are you staring at?” she asked
Harry noticed her look and said
“Nothing,” he said and started saying with slight difficulty “Y-you-your hair in the sunlight looks… err - You look familiar, though…”
“Familiar?” Hermione asked with a grin “You mean me?”
“No,” then he saw Hermione wince and massage her forehead “Are you okay, Hermione?”
“I'm okay…” Hermione replied with a smile “I just haven't been out today and the room started spinning but anyway - what?”
“Nothing, your smile reminded me -“
Hermione giggled.
“Haha, there are times I always remind people of people…” she said
Harry scratched his head awkwardly… her smile reminded her of someone before.
“So… who is she?” Hermione asked intently at Harry
Then it hit Harry.
“You know her, her name is Cho Chang” he smirked
Hermione and Harry laughed. Hermione looked at her ink bottle and made a small gasp.
“Great, I forgot I'm out again… sorry about your familiarity of your ex-girlfriend, Harry” she said apologetically “But would you refill my ink bottle?”
Harry nodded in response to her apology. He took the ink bottle and tapped it with his wand. The ink then filled with black liquid in an instant.
“Well?” he asked as he held up the ink bottle to Hermione
“Yeah?” she answered as she got it from Harry
The sudden grab of the ink bottle from Hermione made the bottle jerk a bit causing some of the black ink spill to her hand.
“Ow!” Hermione breathed
“Oh, the ink!” Harry said
Hermione looked at the ink dripping down from her hands as she placed the ink bottle on the table surface.
“It's dripping,” she said looking at it “I like between my -“
“F-fingers, I figured” Harry finished her sentence immediately, feeling unusually uncomfortable “Oh well, good day, Hermione”
Harry bade her goodbye and left while taking a relief breather. The way Hermione and him interacted felt different…
Thump
Thump
Thump
Harry stopped on his feet and turned around to see Hermione looking at him again. Apparently, she thumped the ink bottle again.
“Is it out again?” he asked
“No, I think I have dropped my wand” she said frustratingly
“Why don't you go out and about where the fun is all out?” Harry insisted looking out at the window where the Hogwarts grounds spread out to the horizon. He felt Hermione never had any relaxation since the beginning of the week because of this essay. “Is your ink out?”
Hermione seemed to ignore him since she was still searching her bag.
“It's missing… I knew I had it when I walked through the door.” She then stood up and searched the floor “It's still new… is it on the floor?”
“The floor?” Harry wondered as he saw her search the floor for her wand
He watched her look around the floor. He realized how small she looked.
Hermione looked up and saw Harry staring at her. She smiled at him and continued her search.
“Um… er - do you need help there?” Harry asked
“No…” she said sweetly “Thanks for the offer, Harry”
After a few silent minutes…
“A Ravenclaw,” Hermione said as she searched her bag again “said I had nice eyes… do you think it's true?” she looked at Harry
“What?” Harry snapped out of his reverie of starting at Hermione searching
“You're staring again!” she said amusingly
“Oh no…” Harry said quickly “I mean - you do have nice ey - I mean -“
He then snapped and changed the subject
“A Ravenclaw boy?” Harry asked as he knelt down and also helped Hermione find her wand.
“Like your ex-girlfriend” Hermione replied
“Don't remind of that but I think I see someone is having a little crush” Harry countered jokingly.
Hermione and Harry stopped searching as they knelt up and looked at each other. Hermione gave Harry a very flustered look.
“Harry! I don't have a crush on anyone!”
“I never said it was you” Harry replied “I was referring to the Ravenclaw”
Hermione blushed.
There was an awkward silence then Hermione spoke.
“I don't have a crush on anyone, I'm just a bit distracted recently”
“Wait - yes,” Harry said with realization “I caught you writing names on your notebook”
Hermione gave Harry a surprised look.
“It's a living” Hermione said as she looked away from Harry “I write names, okay? It doesn't mean anything!”
“I didn't recognize you with that very dreamy look - “
“Can we find my wand?” Hermione cut Harry off
“Why don't you forget about this crush?” Harry pushed on ignoring Hermione's plead to find her wand “You're just turning seventeen”
“I'm eighteen!” Hermione corrected her age “I'm old for my age but I can tell you I don't have a crush”
“I once told you I didn't have a crush… then I blushed a lot like you now” Harry stood up
“I got no crush I'm telling you!” she followed Harry in a defensive tone
“Uh-huh - I used to fall in love” Harry stated
“I just don't want to feel committed at the moment” Hermione explained
“Uh-huh” Harry said in an unconvincing tone while he took a step back. He felt his shoe step on something hard. He looked down and saw Hermione's wand “Oh, here!” he said as he picked the wand up
“What's that?” Hermione asked
“Oh - candy bar wrapper” Harry said quickly as he hid the wand behind his back pocket before Hermione could see it. He decided to hide it from her for reasons he doesn't know…
“Can you give me my wand back?” Hermione asked “What did you do to my wand?”
Harry sat down on the couch nearby where Hermione sat beside him.
“I don't have your wand” Harry lied
“My magic will adjust, thank Merlin for the Summoning charm”
“Maybe it's not the summoning charm, I hear Hagrid's chopping wood down his hut. Want to come?”
“Bah humbug” Hermione said with sarcasm as she took Harry's hand
“Cold hands?” Harry said when he felt her hands
“Yours too” Hermione replied “They're big” she laughed “Like my father's… do you want to go to Hagrid's?”
“With you?” Harry asked
“No,” she said playfully as she pulled Harry up from the couch so they were both standing “With my daddy,”
“Very funny, Hermione” Harry said
Hermione walked behind Harry.
“Just call me…” she looked at Harry's back pocket “Just call me, Hermy”
She took her wand out of Harry's back pocket and waved it to Harry's face.
Hermione then turned to her stuff and with a wave of the wand, she made her stuff go into the bag.
“There, much better!” she said “Let's go to Hagrid's?”
“L-lead the way,” Harry said in a slight stiff state
The two left the common room for Hagrid's. Whatever occurred in the common room gave Harry a hint on how he felt for Hermione… the way they interacted felt unusually out-of-character. The way she looked at him and how many times she pointed out that he was staring at her… the way they spoke, answered each other… it was unusual and different.
Why was it different? Your interaction with someone can drastically change when you develop some strong feeling towards someone. It's quite natural leading to the fact you'll be way out of line from your original persona giving the possibility of making one look pretentious…
Not really.
