The Amorous Comprehensions of the Open Minded

In the everyday happenings of the normal woman, it is that of the wonderfulness in her life that she can accept her own being whilst blocking out every residue of ridicule towards her. She comes and goes as she pleases defending the righteous from the unjust. Being modest as she is, she doesn't consider herself eye candy for the opposite sex but in the general opinion (and mind you, the furtive general opinion.), the opposite sex would take a second glance towards her for she has grown a natural attractiveness towards her soft features. Oblivious to this, she never bothered the feasible attractions she's earned through the years…

But let us not waste time in pushing this matter and let us interest ourselves with the new chapter of our leads in their latest situation of surprises, misunderstandings and unconditional love (if ever.).

* * *

An amazing view spreads before Hermione Granger, best witch of her year in academics, as she gazes the snowy grounds with delight feeling relaxed after an Ancient Runes class of hard work. The petite bookworm gave way for the wind to touch her face and ripple her bushy brown hair as she gazed the snowcapped mountains beyond the Forbidden Forest. Hermione inclined her head backward to look above at the ceiling where hundreds of perched owls were either sleeping or flying from beam to beam.

A strong gust of January wind flew inside the Owlery as it whipped Hermione's robes upward. She smiled as the relaxing feeling overwhelmed her. Her revere of the moment ceased for an instant when a familiar snowy owl appeared in the distance, like a white spot against the dark middle areas of the mountains. It was carrying a package as big as shoebox which was clamped to her beak. Hermione took a step backward to allow Hedwig passage to the Owlery.

“Hello, Hedwig,” said Hermione, looking at Hedwig fondly as the owl perched herself on a stone podium. She always loved Hedwig and found her beautiful than most owls. “You've got something for Harry?”

Hedwig clicked her beak. Hermione took this as a yes as she unleashed her of her burden. The package was quite light for a shoebox-size container. Out of curiosity, Hermione shook it and heard something rattle inside. She looked at the writing on top and was surprised that it came from Fred and George. Hermione wished she didn't read it but the message addressed for Harry was written on top of the box in big letters.

OUR DEAREST HARRY,

THERE'S NOTHING MUCH TO SAY FROM HERE BUT WE CAME UP WITH THIS NEW PRODUCT FOR OUR JOKE SHOP AND WE RECKON YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN BEING ONE OF OUR TESTERS. NO WORRIES THOUGH, THE PRODUCT WON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BEING KNOCKED OUT, SPLINCHED, DICED, JUICED OR ANY OF THOSE BEYOND DREADFUL RUBBISH.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR FEEDBACK SOON ENOUGH SO WE CAN DECIDE WHETHER TO PRODUCE MORE OF THEM.

THANK YOU, HARRY! KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON AND DON'T GO TO ANY TROUBLE AT ALL.

FROM,

FRED AND GEORGE WEASLEY,

FOUNDERS OF WEASLEYS' WIZARD WHEEZES

Hermione raised an eyebrow at the letter. The box contains a product for Harry to test? Hermione felt indignant that they were sending Harry something that is against the school rules to carry and not to mention dangerous.

Out of the reality that she is Head Girl of Gryffindor, Hermione turned the box over and ripped the brown wrapping paper that covered it. Unwrapped, Hermione saw a magenta colored box that was labeled, “Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes Product Testing” in black lettering. Frowning, Hermione took the lid off to see a transparent glass orb.

“L-Ball,” Hermione mouthed the words that were etched on the glass in slant, cursive writing.

The transparent glass orb looked similar with the prophecies she saw at the Hall of Prophecy during her trip to the Ministry last year. Instead of feeble smoke that the prophecies had, this glass orb had black powder inside that floated idly.

Hermione took the L-Ball with her right hand, while the other held the box from the bottom, and held it up against the window where the snowy white sky illuminated through the glass orb. She squinted at the L-Ball and wondered what it could do that relates to pulling pranks. She checked inside the box if there were any instructions but to her dismay, the box was empty. Hermione discarded the box at a near by rubbish bin and examined the L-Ball again.

Did Harry expect a package like this to come? Hermione felt a sudden jolt of horror when she realized she was snooping Harry's privacy. But she was Head Girl, Hermione thought. This was her job to investigate things from Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes since Dumbledore clearly stated they weren't allowed in the school.

“He wouldn't mind,” Hermione convinced herself. “He'll know I am doing my job, won't he?” she winced at the memory of the Firebolt incident four years ago.

Hermione shook off the feeling of guilt and took out her wand. She knew how to check for any curses or jinxes in magical items so it wasn't too difficult for her to tap her wand on the glass orb and nonverbally say the incantation for detecting curses.

The L-Ball didn't react to her spell. Hermione frowned at it and inspected the contents. The black powder was still flowing inside idly.

“Extermina!” she chanted out but to no avail, the L-Ball laid on her hand, motionless.

Feeling a bit annoyed that not even her spells can outwit Fred and George's enchantments, she rapped the orb with her wand and said another incantation that forced the ball to vibrate violently. Like before, it didn't react.

“How did they - ?” Hermione groaned. “That's it…”

Ignoring the sleeping owls, she rapped the orb with her wand again and said “Solfeggio!” her wand seem to have emitted a high pitch whistle as it disturbed the owl population in the Owlery causing a chorus of hooting. Hermione felt pleased that the orb was now reacting. The black powder was now swirling violently, like a tornado. To her shock, the orb started producing cracks like a spider web. Before she could raise her wand to stop the high pitch sound, the orb exploded into a hundred pieces as the black powder fogged Hermione's vision.

“Oh, God…” she said, coughing.

She waved at the black powder smoke away from her. The black powder had the strong smell of firework ashes during post-New Year's Eve. Hermione then went into fit of uncomfortable coughing when she inhaled a large dose of the powder. Hermione took out her handkerchief and covered her mouth as she coughed at it.

“Ah! - Aeolosis!”

Her wand emitted a strong gust of wind as the cloud of powder traveled across the Owlery. Hermione guided the smoke with her wand outside of the window where the black powder traveled above the Forbidden Forest and dissolved into nothingness. Coughing up what's left of the dust, Hermione brushed off excess powder off her robes and shook everything off.

“What in God's name was that?” said Hermione, coughing.

Without registering the curious owls above her, Hermione cleaned the shattered glass to the nearest rubbish bin. Recollecting what just happened; Hermione wondered what the L-Ball was all about. She knew Fred and George meant well with their products but what of the L-Ball? From what she has known, Harry has never tested a Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes product for Fred and George. What could possibly interest Harry to try this one out?

It wasn't too long for Hermione to brood out the meanings of the L-Ball when Ron Weasley walked in, grasping a letter in his hands.

“Hermione!” said Ron. “Didn't know you were here…”

Hermione observed Ron and deducted that he was going to send Mrs. Weasley a letter regarding the recent events of the accident in Hogwarts last Christmas concerning hundreds of faux dementors in one big Christmas present.

“You're mailing to your mum?” Hermione asked.

“Yup,” said Ron, looking up. “Have you seen Pig?”

“Nope,” Hermione walked behind Ron and peeked out of the narrow opening of the Owlery door. “Where's Harry?”

“There you are,” he saw the small Pig sleeping behind a box of owl food. “- what, Hermione? Harry? He went ahead for Defense Against the Dark Arts. What are you doing here?”

“History of Magic ended early,” said Hermione, looking at Ron's back as he prodded Pig awake. “We were just discussing things about the Second Archaic Letterings of the Moon… of course, I found it rather interesting yet mind-boggling -“

“There she goes again… rambling on things I hardly care about…” said Ron's voice suddenly. Hermione glared at his back.

“Well, if you didn't care enough you'd rather say that in front of my face than mutter it in undertones, Ron!” she said shrilly.

Ron spun around with the ball-shaped owl Pig on his hands with a letter clamped on its beak. He was giving Hermione an astounded stare.

“What's got your wand in a knot, Hermione?” said Ron, holding on the struggling Pig.

“I heard what you said!” said Hermione. “And I never expected that from you unless you're a Malfoy!”

“Woah, woah, Hermione!” Ron held up his arms in defense. “What's with the mood swings?”

Hermione made a fierce look at Ron. Her insides boiled at the way Ron was denying what he said. She heard him give a go at her wordiness and deny he said anything!

“Are you telling me you're refuting against my claim that you said something offensive to me?” Hermione asked severely.

“I never said anything offensive to you Hermione!” said Ron in a half-laugh. “Even if I did I would seriously regret it! Has it ever occurred to you that we haven't been arguing the whole year?”

This was true. For a record of five months, she hasn't had an argument with Ron after Harry forced an almost Unbreakable Vow-like deal with the two of them to not argue for as long as they can hold it. So far, they've been successful where they only have nothing much but a bicker.

“I know but still!” said Hermione, feeling rather disbelieving from indignant. “You said I ramble things you hardly care about!”

To Hermione's surprise, Ron looked at her as if he swallowed a cup full of Polyjuice Potion. His jaw dropped a bit giving Hermione the impression that he was concentrating on something very hard.

“I - how -“ Ron stuttered which made Hermione raise an eyebrow. “- did you - what again, Hermione?”

“Are you alright, Ron?” Hermione asked Ron, contemplating his quizzical look.

“I'm fine,” said Ron. “But where did you get that idea?”

“You just said it!” said Hermione, firing up again. “I was right here when you said it!”

“B-but… are you sure you don't have any -“

“Ron…” said Hermione in an icy tone.

“I DID NOT SAY ANYTHING!” Ron cried, accidentally releasing Pig. The tiny owl hooted at Ron and flew out of the window to do its mission.

“Fine!” said Hermione, turning on her heel towards the door. “Fine! Don't admit the truth! I'm fine with that!” she shot a look of annoyance to Ron's stunned face before going out of the door.

“The nerve of him!” Hermione fumed as she crossed the corridor and down the marble staircase for Defense Against the Dark Arts. “As if he has never done it!” she groaned. Hermione marched across the Defense Against the Dark Arts corridor and saw only Harry standing in front of the queue.

“Typical! That's all I can say: typical!” Hermione said irritably, standing next to him and dropping his bag. Harry noticed this and glanced at Hermione.

“Something tells me Ancient Runes didn't go well,” he said conversationally.

“Oh shut up!” Hermione spat at Harry and crossed her arms.

To her shameful relief, Harry didn't question her outburst. Hermione furtively bit her lower lip and looked at Harry who was looking away from her eyes in a rather sheepish state.

“Okay, look…” said Hermione, “I'm sorry. I just had a little sideline annoyance while getting here, that's all.”

“Yeah but I rather trust you wouldn't let it out on me when I'm practically the only person who understands and tolerates you…” said Harry quietly.

“I said I was sorry,” said Hermione firmly.

“I know,” Harry smiled. “Besides, a day in Hogwarts can't be completed without Hermione Granger breathing down my neck every other minute, can it?”

She couldn't help but hold out a grin.

“Never knew the Boy Who Lived knows a thing or two to butter a girl up,” she said jokily.

“It's a gift,” said Harry airily. “But rather butter you up or drive you up the wall, I rather see you smile than stitch your eyebrows together.”

Hermione laughed. It was weird for her though that Harry was being funny at the moment… it was somehow pleasant and different in a good way.

“Thanks, Harry…” said Hermione.

Harry shrugged and smiled at her. Hermione smiled back at him.

“Nice buttering, Harry… real smooth. At least you made her laugh.” Hermione heard Harry.

It was either the fact she was either feels sleepy or she's just seeing things but she could've sworn that Harry's lips didn't move.

“Is there something wrong, Hermione?” said Harry, catching Hermione's puzzled face.

“N-nothing,” said Hermione, looking away. “I… I just realized something…”

Before she could rethink on what she just saw, she heard Harry's voice beside her.

“Was there something in my face that made her look away? Oh God, I hope not…”

Hermione slowly turned her head to Harry with dumbstruck. Harry caught this and raised his eyebrows at her.

“Are you…” said Hermione, casually. “…being image conscious?”

“Am I?” Harry stammered. “I - I don't -“

“I heard you,” said Hermione, smiling smugly. “You said -“

“Malfoy,” said Harry suddenly.

“What?”

“Malfoy,” said Harry, pointing behind Hermione.

Hermione turned and saw Malfoy marching into the corridor with his Slytherins friends. His smug grin towards Harry and Hermione meant that he was looking for someone to give a go at before Defense Against the Dark Arts started.

“Well if it isn't Potty and Granger the Stranger!” Malfoy sneered in mock tones. “Early owls for Potter's beloved subject, I see!” he walked pass them with his friends and stood by the classroom door. “I hear Potty's got the best out of you, Granger -“ he put a finger on his chin and mocked a gesture of thinking as he looked up a the ceiling thoughtfully, “- because - erm -“ he grinned mischievously at Hermione, “- you underperformed the subject, is that right?”

“Don't mind him,” said Hermione to Harry, catching his balled fist. “He's not worth it,”

“There they go again!” said Malfoy loudly, gesturing his hands towards to Harry and Hermione for his friends as if the two were some interesting zoo animal. “Talking among themselves! Potty's probably tutoring Granger a thing or two about Defense Against the Dark Arts!”

“Don't!” Hermione whispered, grabbing Harry's arm.

Harry tried to wrench his way out of Hermione's grasp but did nothing as Hermione hoisted him to her left as her back faced Malfoy.

“Do you have any idea who is in the room right now?” said Hermione cautiously. “You know what Professor Raptor is capable of!”

Over Harry's shoulder, she noticed Ron and Neville walking towards them. She looked back at Harry and nodded at him. Before she could advise him to not give in to Malfoy's transgressions, she heard Malfoy say behind her.

“Nice arse, Granger.”

And without further thinking, forgetting that she was about to do what she told Harry not to do, Hermione unspeakably turned on her heel.

“WHAT?!” she shrieked in a high pitch voice as she turned pink on the face. Malfoy nearly jumped and looked at her, shocked.

She didn't give him any time to recover, she pulled out her wand and aimed at Malfoy who flinched even more. Behind him, Crabbe's and Goyle's faces were awestruck.

“Lacarnum Inflamarae!” Hermione yelled.

Before her bluebell flames could shoot out of her wand, Harry took her by the arm as the flames missed Malfoy by inches causing him to jump backward and land on the ground on his backside.

“You pervert - sickening - HARRY!” Hermione snarled, wrenching her arm from Harry's grasp.

“Hermione! Don't!” shouted Ron, running towards them after seeing what she just did.

“You're a bloody maniac, you know that?!” Malfoy yelled. He was sweating in the face and his eyes were wide as ever.

“Let. Go. Off. Me!” said Hermione.

“What's wrong with you?” Harry asked.

“Didn't you hear Malfoy?!” she said, turning red. “He said I had a -“

“No, I didn't hear Malfoy!” Harry claimed. “If he did, I would've heard it!”

Hermione stared at Harry blankly.

“Are you telling me you didn't hear anything?” said Hermione indignantly.

“No,” said Harry at once.

“That Mudblood Granger should know whose she messing with…” drawled Malfoy from behind. To Hermione's surprise, Harry didn't react to Malfoy's use of Mudblood. Not that it bothered her but she had to admit, (and she felt half-ashamed and half-stupid for admitting it.) she has always expected Harry or Ron to jump to her aid whenever Malfoy gave a go at her no matter how much she told them off to not mind him.

Malfoy fixed his robes and glared at Hermione as he walked backwards to his group of Slytherins. Hermione glared back at him over her shoulder.

“You'll pay for this Mudblood and I'll make sure your boyfriends won't be there to save your skin.”

To her astonishment, Malfoy said this without the use of his lips. Her glare changed into a look of puzzlement. She turned to Harry.

“Did you hear that?” said Hermione.

“Hear what?” Harry asked. Ron stood beside Harry to listen in what Hermione was going to say.

“What Malfoy said,” said Hermione, sounding quite panicky. “He called me a Mudblood!”

“I didn't hear anything, Hermione,” said Harry conclusively.

Hermione didn't argue. She turned away from Harry and stared into space. Did she just imagine it? Did Malfoy really say nothing?

“But...” Hermione tried to argue but the door to their classroom opened and their Defense Against the Dark Arts professor of the year, Professor Raptor exited. For the many peculiar things in Hogwarts, Professor Raptor's appearance is probably up there with them. Firstly, he lacks the appearance of a human but that of a creature. Much like Firenze, Professor Raptor looked like he had a great deal of anthropomorphism. With a reptilian face that reminded Hermione of a dinosaur, orange scale-ish skin and a long sturdy tail that protruded from the back of his dark brown robes. He wore boots and gloves to conceal his claws beneath them.

“In,” he nodded to the class.

Everyone was pouring into the classroom. Before Hermione followed Harry and Ron, she stopped on her tracks and without anyone looking she turned her head slowly and looked at her backside.

“Is it… really nice?” she whispered, feeling embarrassed.

Shaking her head, feeling idiotic for questioning that, Hermione entered the classroom as Professor Raptor went to the blackboard and started writing words on it. Hermione sat in the center of the class and pulled out her book. She looked around and saw Harry and Ron sitting a few seats to her upper left. She frowned wondering why either of them wouldn't want to sit with her. Neville took the seat to her right and before he could ask her for a quill, the sound of scratching chalk stopped.

“Lethifolds,” he said, turning to the class in a graceful manner. The word “Lethifold” was written in neat and loopy handwriting. “Before the Christmas holidays started, I advised you all to look up on Lethifolds for light reading for they will be tackled right after the holidays ended,” he smirked. “But as always, no one will ever listen to the recommendations of the teacher for they believe that they are none but the wiser!” then he thumbed to Hermione. “'Cept for her… she had the book for breakfast.” Hermione smiled weakly, in response.

“So what will we do today, class of nineteen ninety-seven?” he asked to the class wryly. “We have done our practices, tackled theories and took the lowdown on dark arts facts! So why not start the year in a single thing we call - you'll love this, Hermione - “ he added, leaving out his serious tone for a brief moment in exchange for a conversational one, and said again, “reading.”

Hermione felt slightly affronted by this but felt delighted that Professor Raptor recognizes her dedication in the subject. She looked at Ron and Harry who were exchanging grins as they pulled out their Defense Against the Dark Arts books (Dark Arts: Life, Universe and Everything).

“Now,” Professor Raptor announced as he traipsed the aisle between the seated students. “I would like all of you to turn to page eight hundred and fifteen and read up chapter twenty-three on the bulk on Lethifolds. That chapter is ass-huge so I reckon you start reading now or else you'll be pushing up the daisies on tomorrow's recitation-slash-practice. Now start, commence, begin, launch, go underway, go and collect two-hundred dollars. Read!”

Hermione wasn't hesitant to start when she flipped to the said page. She began scanning the page for she had read the chapter a fortnight ago. Reading the fifteenth paragraph with her mind on the strike of the thirtieth minute, she eyed on the lines with concentration.

During the year of 1782, Flavius Belby was made famous after successfully defeating a Lethifold in Papua New Guinea. His encounter confirmed the existence of these creatures which can be repelled by the powerful Patronus Charm. His encounter not only marked -

“Lethifolds live in the tropical regions of the world…” said the lazy voice of Ron. Hermione shot a look at Ron, surprised at his sudden read-aloud. “…and are known to be rare -“

“Ron,” said Hermione in a loud whisper. “Keep it down!”

Ron turned to Hermione with a puzzled stare. It looked as if he was rudely interrupted.

“I'm not even loud, Hermone!” said Ron quietly. “I'm just reading -“

“Quiet!” barked Professor Raptor, marching along the aisles, surveying students as he goes along.

Hermione and Ron went back to their books and Hermione surveyed Ron worriedly. This was the second time Ron claimed that he hasn't uttered a single word when she accused him of otherwise and the fourth time Hermione had an encounter with hearing people say things when they claim they haven't. She anxiously surveyed around the room furtively to see if anyone registered that Ron read his book out loud awhile ago. Unfortunately, no one reacted to anything but to Professor Raptor's sudden outburst for silence. It was almost nerve-racking to think that she's hearing phantoms playing with her head.

“Easy, Hermione…” Hermione whispered. “You're just being silly.”

“Oh bollocks,” said Neville beside her. “Too… many… dates… to memorize!”

She looked at Neville and noticed how his face looks screwed up in concentration. She looked at Professor Raptor who was leaning on his desk, surveying the class, appearing as if he hasn't heard Neville say anything at all.

“Damn the weather…” said Professor Raptor all of a sudden. Hermione's eyes widened at the fact he said this without moving his snout. “It's been snowing for months now… but then again, I'm in Scotland! Haha… hahaha…” he chuckled and drifted into silence.

Hermione winced as she lowered her behind her book. There was no point in beating around the bush. She was hearing voices… but from where?

I can't deny it… I can't deny it any longer… I'm hearing voices of other people… am I doing magic that makes me hear voices? But where did they -

The words “as if the Lethifold read my mind.” from Flavius Belby's account on his Lethifold attack in Hermione's book gave her a sudden jolt of shock. No… it can't be possible. Only an accomplished Legilimens can achieve mind reading! Let alone, they need a wand to do it… and Hermione didn't have her wand in her hands at the moment. Hermione started to panic and nearly stifled in her breathing. Coughing quietly, Hermione recollected herself and propped her book up to cover herself from Professor Raptor.

You're just hearing things, Hermione… You can't read minds! It's not viable! It's probably the work of over-studying for the past few months -

“Damn that Mudblood,” snarled Malfoy's voice from behind. “She'll pay for what she did… but I hate to admit it but she would've been a fine Slytherin -“

Hermione moaned.

I am hearing things! But if I'm “reading minds”… since when did I start reading -

Then it hit her. All of this happened after she visited the Owlery. Hermione swore under her breath to Fred and George.

The L-Ball! Those two bloody gits! I knew that thing was bad news!

The bookworm recollected herself and took a gulp of air before breathing it out. It may be crazy to think she can read minds but this is Fred and George she's talking about. Two people who surpassed the common logic of magic to create any item so unbelievable that it makes the nuclear bomb look like a firecracker!

Owl them during free period… don't panic, Hermione… just owl them and they will probably send you a cure on how to get rid of this condition… you can survive a day without thinking that everyone will see that you're crazy!

Dread crept up Hermione's face at the thought of getting embarrassed if she would jump the gun and bite someone's head off whenever he or she said something. Like what if she heard someone say something mean about her and she blows up only to find that she was the only one who heard them? It would be very awkward. A few minutes later, Hermione composed a letter regarding her condition to Fred and George and a plea to send the cure immediately, if there is any. She eyed the short letter and took a deep breath, slipping the parchment in her robe pocket.

You just have to go through with this, Hermione!, she shut her eyes. If you hear the inappropriate, just block it off… block it off… it'll be like Occlumency!

“Wow… Harry is really good looking from here…” said a voice to Hermione's right.

Hermione opened her eyes. Following the source of the voice, Hermione looked passed Neville and saw an amusing sight. Looking timid and pensive, Parvati Patil, Hermione's fellow Gryffindor, was staring intently at Harry's direction. Grinning with amusement, Hermione followed Parvati's gaze and saw Harry looking surprisingly pleasant. He was resting on the top of his book, his head propped up on his hand with the elbow holding it up. Harry was staring blankly towards the windows to their right. Hermione almost wanted to jinx herself for realizing how Harry was indeed good looking from that angle…

“Harry…” said the voice of Lavender Brown. Hermione craned her head upward to see Lavender also looking dreamily at Harry's direction. She slowly opened her mouth in amusement. For the past few years, these two girls have never shown their affections towards Harry… why now?

Why now… Hermione blinked. If there was one thing she realized just now it would be the fact that she could read minds… but in a way that she can read minds and find something interesting.

You're not an eavesdropper!

But the power of reading anyone's mind is something tempting to use… Hermione reminded herself that she might not have total control so if someone slips up, she will get to hear it… but then again… it's morally wrong.

But think of it as if you're going to read minds just for the fun… no one will get hurt, right? Besides, no one will ever know! It will be just you! No harm done…

Hermione struggled with herself. At this moment, she had the power to read anyone's mind. It was with her right now… at first it was scary to catch a negative go towards you but after evaluation, it might not be so bad… she did find out about Lavender's and Parvati's affections towards Harry…

Think of all the funny things you can hear, Hermione!, said a mischievous voice behind Hermione's head. C'mon… it won't hurt but to be all ears!

Hermione blinked. She nodded to herself. It's just for fun… she won't hurt anyone… she can probably use this against Malfoy!

Speaking of Malfoy…

He… he said I had a nice… backside…

She cringed at the thought of Malfoy liking her. It was impossible. She convinced herself that Malfoy was insulting her appearance… she never thought herself as a pretty face anyway.

Hermione turned to Malfoy. He was looking scornful as usual, staring at the blackboard, his closed book on the table. She wondered what Malfoy was thinking at the moment…

“Damn this is boring… when will Professor Raptor bring in the practical stuff. They were always the best…” said the voice of Malfoy. For the first time ever, Hermione realized that the voices spoken in the mind had a slight echo in them. “Now I have to do things I don't like… ugh… reading…” he caught Hermione's eye. “Why is Granger looking at me?”

Making sure that nothing looks wrong, Hermione glared at Malfoy and out of her subconscious juvenile self, she stuck a tongue at Malfoy and turned away before she could hear more of Malfoy's thoughts.

Alright… that was close…

Hermione looked around and saw Neville…

What are you thinking, Neville Longbottom?

“So Flavius did use the Patronus…” said Neville's voice. “These Lethifolds are scary… good thing they live in the tropics - why is Hermione staring? D-Did I do something wrong? Oh no, I think I got the wrong date again… does she know?”

Hermione turned pink. Was this Neville's impression whenever she looked at him while he worked on his schoolwork? Hermione smiled at him kindly and patted him on the shoulder and whispered, “You're doing great, Neville.”

Ignoring Neville's confused yet confident face, Hermione turned away from him and craned her neck over the sea of bowed heads. She glanced at Professor Raptor's bored state.

“God created dinosaurs, God kills dinosaurs, God creates man, man destroys God and man creates dinosaurs…” said Professor Raptor absentmindedly. “I'm hungry… I wonder why Lethifolds suck…”

Hermione fought a desire to laugh.

“Wow…” Professor Raptor continued, his eyes moving towards the windows. “An owl passed by…”

She ignored Professor Raptor and turned to Pansy Parkinson.

“Oh,” complained Parkinson, while she mindlessly flicked her pages. “I hope these pimples get off before February comes… I want to look good for Zabini…”

Hermione stifled a laugh and disguised it as a cough. She always thought Parkinson was all for Malfoy! She looked at Malfoy again and saw him winking at Parkinson. Fighting back a laugh was hard at the moment… she can't wait to tell Harry and Ron.

Harry and Ron?

It was at this moment Hermione fought an undesirable urge to look into their minds. She bit her lower lip and looked at them… she trusts them as they trust her… would it be justified if she read their minds? Does she have a reason to do it?

They're your best friends… they wouldn't mind… besides, what is there to hide anyway?

As if it was the obvious way to read ones' mind, Hermione concentrated on the back of Ron's head. Like before, an echo-like voice of Ron rang her ears. It was as audible as if he was speaking to her closely.

“Ugh,” Ron groaned, “I can't even understand this paragraph… can't we just get back to practical exercises like last year?”

Hermione smiled at Ron. She felt proud of him due to his greatest efforts for the year… Hermione can't help but hug him every time he came back from class with a glowing O or E written on his parchment. Looking from Ron to Harry, she was surprised that Harry was staring back at her.

Hermione blushed a bit and waved at him furtively. Harry grinned at her and waved back. For some reason, Hermione noticed he looked self-conscious. She smiled at him and wondered why he was looking all flustered. Harry smiled at her in an unusual timid way and quickly looked away. Hermione frowned at him. Why was he acting like that?

“Do you think she knows you've been staring at her for quite some time?” said Harry's voice enigmatically. “She probably thought I was just… looking at her normally! Yeah… don't worry about it… she doesn't have to know.”

Harry? Hermione tilted her head, looking at the back of Harry's head curiously. She bore into his head normally, trying to read his mind…

“…just read on Lethifolds! That's right… just read… keep your mind off it!” said Harry's voice anxiously.

Hermione's heart began to race. Why was Harry acting like this? She never seen Harry so nervous unless he there was something on the horizon that was dangerous… or complicated.

Hermione wanted to consult the other option but she didn't know why she was afraid of pondering on it… it was impossible. Harry deserves better… maybe he had a girl problem again with another girl he met.

“There goes Potty and Granger's eye exchange moments…” Malfoy's drawling voice echoed in her ears. “So typical… ugh…”

“Alright! Time's up!” announced Professor Raptor happily. “Remember that there will be a recitation tomorrow with practical tests in between!” he called at the exiting class. “Your assignment is to bring a bell! Lethifolds hates bells! It scares the living hell out of them!”

Hermione noticed Ron with Harry at the front. Hermione pretended she was tying her red and gold tie. Doing it as casually as she can, she noticed Ron acknowledging her presence as he called for her to hurry it up. Hermione walked up to Ron and Harry.

“That was an interesting subject!” said Hermione casually. “What do you think, Ron?”

The three walked out of the room, bade Professor Raptor a goodbye on the way out.

“I thought it was something…” said Ron bleakly. “But to be honest, I rather we get into the action… as Professor Raptor said; `Theory is Hypothetical without Practice!' I mean, he hasn't gotten over the bumblefoot, hasn't he?”

“As long as he doesn't aim guns, I'm fine,” Hermione chuckled, hoisting her bag up. She glanced at Harry. “How about you, Harry?”

“Er - what?” Harry craned his neck to see Hermione beside Ron.

“What do you think of what you read today?”

“It was - erm - interesting… I didn't read it much.. Patronus Charms, you know…” he smirked. “You saw me do my first successful one, didn't you?”

“Of course,” said Hermione, following Ron down the marble staircase. “I thought it was brilliant.”

“She said it was brilliant…” said Harry's echoed voice. Hermione shot a look at Harry. He was grinning from ear to ear. Much to her luck, Ginny arrived.

“Ron, there you are!” she said, panting.

“Easy there,” said Harry. “Where have you been?”

Ginny staggered up and brushed her robes.

“Arithmancy,” she said rather happily. “Hermione here reckons I'd take… quite fun, really.”

Hermione nodded in response.

“Anyway,” Ginny turned to Ron again, “Your letter to mum didn't make it.”

“What? How did you - why?” Ron asked confusingly. “Don't tell me -“

“Pig,” Ginny shook her head, trying her best not to laugh. “Apparently, Hagrid found him outside of his hut showing off to a couple of those birds that Hagrid's been using for his classes.”

Hermione and Harry stifled their laughs as Ron groaned.

“Shut up, you two,” said Ron to Harry and Hermione. “Where is he, Ginny?”

“With Hagrid…” she jerked her head, “Come on, I know how much you love to pay Pig a visit -“ she turned to Harry and Hermione, “You two coming?”

“No,” said Hermione immediately. “Harry was going to help me with something. Right, Harry?”

She glanced at Harry who gave her a look of both confusion and amusement. Ever since of Harry's weird mind talk back at Defense Against the Dark Arts, Hermione thought that it's best to let things unfold.

“Yes,” said Harry in a forced casual voice. “I just remembered too…”

“That settles it then,” said Ginny, grabbing Ron by the arm. “Let's go big brother!”

“I can move myself, thank you!” Ron complained “See you guys…” he wrenched his arm from Ginny as the two walked away and disappeared down the corridor and out of sight. Hermione and Harry exchanged looks and for some reason, Harry was rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet.

“So I guess you pulled a white lie on them then,” said Harry tranquilly.

“I had to find a way to… er…” she pursed her lips. “…get them out of the way.”

At the corner of her eyes, she noticed Harry's smirk. It almost looked as if he was pleased by this.

“What's next?” said Harry, taking his schedule out of his bag.

“None,” said Hermione. “We have an hour break until…” she examined, “…Arithmancy.”

“You have an hour break `til Arithmancy,” Harry corrected her. “I have an hour break until Charms.”

Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Harry, Ron and Hermione had different Charm schedules throughout the year due to their N.E.W.T. selections. At first, Hermione didn't mind it at all not until she realized how slightly lonesome she felt when she realized how she's been on Charms classes with Harry and Ron for the past six years.

“I stand corrected,” Hermione nodded. “Do you want to pass the time in the lake?”

Hermione completely forgotten that she was going to send Fred and George a letter regarding her mind-reading state. She was keener in knowing more of Harry's behavior… as much as she felt almost fearful of it.

“Well?” Hermione tilted her head.

Perhaps it was something to do with the light but Harry came across of being hesitant and anxious. He pursed his lips a bit and briefly looked before looking back at Hermione. Hermione thought about reading Harry's mind but luckily for her, his clairvoyant voice spoke.

“Just say yes, Harry… it's just an hour break! Just remember to ask her about your current girl problem… “

“Harry!” said Hermione loudly. Feeling relieved that she found out Harry was having girl problems instead of something more serious.

“Y-yes, sure!” said Harry timidly. “I would love to…”

The two set off for the lake while Hermione smiled towards Harry with concern. He was indeed having girl problems again. She liked the fact that Harry turned to her for advice despite how he knew that there were other girls who knew better about the topic. Maybe a talk with him on the lake will help him? She thought of asking about his anxious condition when they get there.

They met the stinging sensation of cold air on their faces as they exited the entrance hall. The snowy grounds were pleasant to look at as the sun above them shone brightly against the cloudless sky. The cold crawled up their skin comfortably as the sun made the lake before them shimmer in elegance. With the winter nearing its end, blocks of ice were now drifting along the lake's surface. Hermione and Harry sat under the usual beech tree at the edge of lake overlooking the horizon. Due to their status of being seventh years having free periods from time to time, the grounds were almost empty. Hermione felt the gentle breeze graze her face and bushy brown hair. She surveyed the glazed lake and looked at Harry.

“It's beautiful, isn't it?” said Hermione.

Harry smiled and nodded. “The wind is nice,” said Harry. He bowed his head and concentrated on the ground.

“How can I start now? This may be the only time, Harry…”

It was inadequate to hold it any longer.

“Is there something bothering you, Harry?” Hermione asked.

“Why say that?” Harry asked quickly.

“Nothing,” Hermione shook her head innocently. “I'm just checking up on you… you know, it's been awhile since we ever had something like this… just us talking,” she smiled. “We have different schedules that I really don't see you and Ron that much anymore…”

She surveyed Harry. He looked really timid, as if fighting a mad desire to shout. Hermione frowned at him… if he really did have a girl problem, he wouldn't be this hesitant.

“Who is she?” she asked suddenly.

Harry stopped his movement and looked at Hermione.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, forcing himself not to smile.

“Oh come on, Harry,” said Hermione. “I've known you for six years! I can tell if you have a girl problem or not! Don't be afraid to tell me, Harry… I can help.” she gave him a confident smile.

“How come she knows everything?” said an astounded voice of Harry's mind. Hermione giggled a bit and looked at the lake.

“Is she a Ravenclaw?” Hermione asked, not looking at Harry.

“Ummm, Hermione?” Harry asked. “I - I'm not asking for girl advice…”

“Oh,” Hermione's eyes widened. “I see… but are you alright?”

“I'm fine,” said Harry, his voice sounded defeating and disappointed. “I just thought we could talk something other than girls.”

Hermione laughed. She knew Harry was changing the subject. Hermione wanted to know why Harry was having girl problems.

“You're a bloody coward, you know that?” said Harry's voice. “She will understand… it's no big deal! She's your best friend… she won't freak out or anything!”

Hermione bit her lower lip. Whatever Harry wanted to tell to her, she can tell it's really hurting his own wellbeing.

“You can walk away now. Because whatever happens and if you do tell her everything, you can either end up as a sad or happy polar bear!” said a panicked Harry.

“I - I've got to go, Hermione,” said Harry abruptly. “I - I'm sorry,” he stood up.

Hermione gawked at him. His fidgety mood was something that worried her. Why was he acting like this?

“Why?” she asked anxiously.

“I - I need to check up on my Firebolt.”

“Oh come on, Harry!” said Hermione, standing up. “That broomstick will be as clean as how you describe Number Four, Privet Drive if you keep on cleaning it!”

“But I need -“

“Don't you want to spend time with me for the break?” she asked, feeling rather stupid asking this. “Look Harry, ever since October, we've never been in touch with each other due to the hectic schedules! I'm glad you're here with me, I really am! But don't keep me in the dark if something is obviously bothering you!” she paused and said slowly, “Come…sit with me, please?”

Hermione observed Harry's posture. He looked very pitiful and lost… his hand holding onto the strap of his leather messenger bag, his breathing could be heard from where she was sitting and the fact that he was giving her a look of a lost boy. Hermione wanted to know why…

“She's inviting you to sit with her, Harry!” said Harry's voice, suddenly. What surprised Hermione was the fact that he sounded as if he was arguing with himself. “This may be the only time! - No… no, I can't - Do it - I-I have a Charms essay to finish - You're finding excuses, Harry! You finished it last night - What's there to be afraid of? - Mind you, this may be the only chance! One hour with her, think about it! - But what if she -“

Hermione spun on her heel and covered her mouth with her knuckles to stop her from giggling nervously with embarrassment. She couldn't believe what she heard…

Harry… Harry likes me? Am I the girl problem?

She stuffed her face in her hands to hide the blushes. It was very awkward. Here she was, listening to Harry's thoughts and realizing that he liked her… but since when?

“Are you alright, Hermione?” Harry asked from behind.

“I'm fine,” said Hermione in a high pitched voice. She turned to him and smiled, “Never better!”

Hermione held a hand above her nose to hide the blush that was slowly ebbing away.

“I reckon you want to be with someone,” said Harry quietly and awkwardly.

Hermione bit her lower lip. She didn't know what to say… this was getting weirder and weirder…

“L-let's sit down,” Hermione squeaked, sitting down. “Come -“

Harry sat down beside her and they both sat there in silence. Hermione realized how stupid she thought on thinking that Harry had girl problems when it turned out to be her… the way he was fighting with himself to spend time with her… no wonder he was fidgety… he was fighting an emotional battle to express his feelings to her today or not. A swelling sensation inflated under Hermione's lung at the thought of Harry liking her…

What's there to like me?

She never thought of herself pretty… she was never that of an image conscious type. Why would Harry waste his time trying to crush on her? Undoubtedly, she found it flattering that Harry fancied her but this was weird! She loved him only because of him being her best friend.

“God, you're beautiful…” said Harry's mind calmly.

Nothing but this calmed Hermione immediately. All of her thoughts stopped at the sound of Harry calling her beautiful and slowly, she secretively beamed Harry. For the first time in her life, she was ever complimented this way… Viktor would call her pretty at times but that was because she looked pretty during the Yule Ball. But right now she wasn't wearing a periwinkle-blue dress nor was her hair sleek and shiny tied into an elegant bow. Harry called her beautiful when she was in this state… no make-up, no fancy cream or any of that… it was only at this moment in time that Hermione noticed she was blushing as she smiled.

Am I really beautiful to him?

Half of her mind wanted to explore more of these flattering feelings whilst the other half wanted Hermione to ignore this and pass it on as something less. But the fact that Hermione was feeling flattered due to Harry's complement, Hermione couldn't help but find it fitting to know more… maybe it might not be so bad to look into it… she never had a boyfriend nor did she stop herself from getting one…

“Break the ice, Harry…” said Harry's voice. “Say anything… Oh God, you were never nervous to her like this before!”

“Erm…” said Harry. “What's up?”

“What's up? What's up?! Is that the best thing you can say?!”

Hermione stifled a laugh. She recollected herself and looked at Harry.

“Nothing much,” she sighed. “I - er - have been doing things,”

“And what might these things be?” Harry asked.

“Studying, no doubt,” said Harry in an obvious voice of wryness.

“Studying,” said Hermione, satisfying his speculations. “How about you? I've heard you're eyeing on someone lately,” she said before she could stop herself.

“Oh Merlin… I hope she doesn't know!” said Harry's panicky voice. “Erm, “ said Harry though his lips. “Where did you get that idea?”

“I don't know…” said Hermione casually, looking at the lake. “Intuition?” she giggled. “You seem fidgety and different lately…” she smiled at him. “It could only mean one thing,”

“Stay calm, Harry… she doesn't know… NO ONE KNOWS!”

“W-what is that?” Harry asked.

“You're distracted,” said Hermione. “You look like you need more focus now,”

“You can't possibly think that, right?” said Harry, feeling more confident.

“Because if you weren't distracted, Harry,” said Hermione wryly, “You wouldn't be wearing your robes inside out, would you?”

Hermione smirked at Harry who was now noticing the way his robes were worn. They were indeed worn backwards. He blushed and started to wear them the way they were supposed to be worn.

“You can laugh now,” said Harry irritably.

“Great job, Harry!” said Harry's clairvoyant voice. “Just great! You made yourself look stupid!” his mind's lips sighed. “Calm down… calm down… you're just too riled up over this… just ask her… you can do anything in front of her back then, why not now?”

“I wish I could,” said Hermione, registering what Harry's mind said. “But I worry you might hex me to the next country.”

“Why would I hex you?” Harry asked.

“Is that a rhetorical question?” Hermione raised her eyebrows.

“Yes,” said Harry at once.

“Hoho, Harry Potter,” said Hermione in mock shrillness. “If you just tell me what's bothering you, it'll make you feel a glimmer of freedom.”

“No,” said Harry, defensively. “It's just that… it's complicated, alright…”

“Don't. Hesitate. Any. Longer!” said Harry's mind.

“How complicated?” said Hermione, pretending to be unwitting, “Is it a girl?”

“Yes,” said Harry simply. “I… I can't… its hard -“

“What's hard?” Hermione asked casually.

“You know what I mean!” said Harry frustratingly. “Remember in the Christmas party that Professor Slughorn hosted? Professor Raptor introduced us to that bloke Sawyer -“

“James Ford! His real name is James and no, he is not a bloke,” said Hermione defensively. “He's nice!”

“Nice to you,” said Harry coolly. Hermione noticed how his voice sounded indignant. “Anyway, that's what I'm talking about… you were head over heels on him and you were asking me to talk to him!”

“Well,” said Hermione, trying to find a way to retort. “I guess it can be complicated…”

For one thing Hermione can rely on and that is patience… now that she knows how Harry feels about her, she can't help but wait for Harry to admit it. Her subconscious was telling her to let Harry tell her under his own accord and own agenda instead of circumstance.

“Look, Harry…” said Hermione conclusively. “Whoever this girl is…” she smiled. “I think she would've loved it that you like her… because in my professional opinion, I don't think anyone deserves to be more loved than you after what you have done.”

Harry scratched his nose and Hermione noticed that he was hiding a blush. She smiled and the two gazed at each other's eyes for awhile now.

“This is you last chance, Harry… just tell her!” she heard Harry say in his mind.

Hermione didn't know whether she wanted Harry to admit it now or later… what mattered now was that she knows someone likes her with genuine feelings… something that can mean something in the future.

“Do you want to accompany me to Arithmancy?” Hermione asked suddenly. She knew what she wanted now… she decided to keep her feelings at bay. At the moment, she wanted Harry to be with her.

“Why?” Harry asked shakily.

“Nothing,” said Hermione kindly. “Just… walk with me. Be an escort… I figured that I'm always alone in Arithmancy so why not ask you or Ron to walk with me from time to time? I see you're the only one here so why not?”

“Sure,” said Harry, nodding briskly. “I - I'd love to.”

“You're doing it right, Harry… just take it slow.”

“Excellent,” said Hermione. “Oh God,” she looked at her wristwatch. “I just remembered, I need something from the library!”

She stood up and looked into her bag. Harry stood up and hung around her.

“You're going?” Harry asked, sounding disappointed.

“Yeah… unless you want to come, that is.” said Hermione.

“I'd love to but Madam Pince isn't too happy with me at the moment…” said Harry, wincing. “Besides, I have to check on my Charms essay. There could be a thing or two I might need to correct.”

“Oh, okay,” said Hermione, hoisting her bag up. “I'll just meet you up at the entrance hall later then,”

“Huh?” Harry looked at her quizzically.

“You are going to walk with me to Arithmancy, right?” Hermione beamed.

“Oh - yeah! Sure, don't worry… entrance hall, got it,” said Harry, nodding.

“Let's go,” said Hermione, “Otherwise, we might succumb to something worse than a dreadful frostbite.”

* * *

Hermione left the library ten minutes after she parted with Harry in the entrance hall. Since then, nothing has been stranger except for the fact she now knows that Madam Pince talks about Filch a lot… Hermione giggled at the thought and went her way down a corridor that didn't lead to the entrance hall. Hermione looked behind to check if anyone was following her. The corridor she ended up was empty and quiet. Slowly, Hermione slowed her pace and leaned against the wall of the corridor.

“I can't believe it,” said Hermione quietly, raking her brown hair. “Harry likes me…” she sniffed and looked up. “Never expected that…”

The feelings within her have sunk in during her search in the library… it was always a matter of time till Hermione found someone she loved. But never in her life would she realize that it would be Harry. It didn't matter if she found out about it awhile ago in the lake… what mattered is that Harry has feelings for her… does she have any in return? It was almost nerve-racking to even think of going along with it and embracing such feelings.

Do I even have feelings for Harry?

That was the main question… does she even have to begin with? She remembered having a crush on him back in their third year but the feelings disappeared during the time of her argument with Ron, who also had a crush on her during their fourth, fifth and sixth year. Hermione was quite oblivious if Ron was still crushing on her right now… she doubted it though when Luna fancied giving Ron presents that past few months. Jealousy erupted within Hermione's stomach at the thought… she always liked Ron… but after a whole year of getting to the N.E.W.T. schedules, she can't quite recall how she dropped romance in her life… she just doesn't care anymore…

But what about Harry? He just sort of came out of nowhere…

It was true… since when did he start fancying her? She recalled his time with Ginny last year… it never really bothered her. In fact, she was quite pleased that Harry brought his courage up to kiss her when they won the Quidditch Cup so why the sudden feelings for her now after he broke up with Ginny?

Hermione shook her head. All this thinking on everything was making her gut swell with anxiety. There was only one way to find everything out… she knows it will change everything but she convinced herself…

Harry is a nice guy… I'm surprised a lot of girls would pass him up for some others.

She was right though. Harry is the nicest boy Hermione has ever met. It would be mental for a girl to pass him up. Then again, he was always quiet for someone famous… and speaking of which, it's almost flattering that the famous Harry Potter fancies Muggle-born Hermione! She smiled at the memory of Harry commenting how beautiful she was… she blushed a bit at admitting how much she loved Harry for saying that…

He's not so bad, Hermione…

But he's my best mate,

Doesn't really matter, right?

Things can get complicated -

Ron has moved on, Hermione… get over it.

Remember that Dumbledore would've been happy if there was more love in the world.

The thought of this changed Hermione's opinion in her open-minded battle of comprehension of the situation. It probably won't be too bad… somewhere behind her big heart of trying to be the best in Hogwarts, Hermione felt she needed to be loved for once… someone there to make sure she's alright… someone who she can hug… that stuff… Viktor wasn't always loquacious so she never experienced those… but it made her happy nonetheless… being that happy again was a secret wish she would've wanted if ever the opportunity came along.

But it's here, isn't it? Just grab it and go! Be happy!

Hermione smiled confidently. Be happy… that's all she wanted… and what would make this normal day the happiest day ever?

“But should I back out?” Hermione asked herself frankly

“Do that and your life will be a million times better,” said a sarcastic tone to Hermione's left.

Hermione jumped and turned to meet the eyes of her Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Professor Raptor.

“Erm… hello, Professor,” Hermione smiled weakly.

“Goin' on with that teenage angst again?” he raised an eyebrow at her in his thick American-accent.

Hermione shook her head and finally registered what he was wearing: he looked strange sporting a pale yellow hard cap that was equipped with a flashlight on - but as Hermione looked closer it was in fact fireflies trapped inside a container. Through his brown robes, she noticed his wand had been sheathed in his boot.

“Er - professor?” Hermione surveyed him curiously.

“I'm looking for something,” he nodded thoughtfully. “By the way, what are you doing in the east wing of Hogwarts? Shouldn't you be in classes?”

“I - erm - have my - erm,” she stuttered.

“Fine then, keep your secrets,” he chuckled as he smiled fatherly at her. “But whatever it is, I hope it is under good intentions!”

Hermione laughed quietly. She stared at Professor Raptor's sheathed wand and wondered if it was okay to ask… she remembered having tea with Professor Raptor when he invited the smartest students of each year wherein Hermione represented the seventh years. During that time, Professor Raptor proved to be someone you can talk to whenever you have something in your mind… somehow like a shrink.

“Actually… I have one thing to ask…” she said.

“Fire away,” said Professor Raptor.

“Er… have you ever encountered a point in life that requires lots of thinking just in case you might do a blunder?” Hermione asked.

“Like when you ask yourself if you really want this or that sort of way?” Professor Raptor asked wisely.

“Yes,” said Hermione. “…like when you think what you're deciding on is going to change your life forever.”

She shifted uncomfortably on her spot, hoping that she won't read his mind accidentally. Professor Raptor moved and leaned against the wall beside Hermione and rubbed his chin.

“Love related?”

“We can call it that,” said Hermione jokily.

“I can't say much,” said Professor Raptor. “But if you believe that this… this thing you're having, this decision - you should know that whatever you're going to decide…” he smiled. “You must learn two important things; the knowledge of commitment and the knowing idea of letting go. With those two, you can have as much of a happier love than you can possibly imagine.”

“Really never thought of that,” said Hermione, she looked at Professor Raptor skeptically. “You thought of that yourself?”

“The amorous comprehensions of the open minded,” he shrugged, “and lots of TV and reading.” He added with a chuckle.

Hermione smiled at this and thanked him. She looked up at Professor Raptor and noticed the yellow cap.

“Are those fireflies?” she asked.

“Oh these? -“ he flicked the transparent container filled with fireflies. “I figured that these guys will do the trick since flashlights will just malfunction in this place.” He pulled out a black torchlight that looked like it was burned. “Poor sucker… I got it in from Best Buy for cheap before coming here…”

“You know Muggle stuff?” Hermione asked interestingly.

“Yep, I'm a Muggle-born, meself,” said Professor Raptor, waving a lazy claw. “And no need to say your heritage,” he smirked. “Harry's been telling me things about you.”

“He has?” Hermione asked interestingly.

“Yep, told me all about your smarts (something I know already,), your charm, your Muggle-born heritage and how you're an obsessed house-elf hugger.” He winked. “It's a good thing: house-elf rights, I just love `em.” he chuckled.

“Erm… what else did he say?” she asked curiously.

“Nothing much,” said Professor Raptor. “The boy is so obvious when he slips in about how she's smart, elegant and alll… haha, the bastard and his styles! Hehe, he even asked for her class record.”

Hermione blushed a bit… so Harry was talking about her to other people… the feeling of butterflies unusually erupted in her stomach… it was a good feeling. Upon the previous reflection she had awhile ago, she somehow liked the fact that Harry was talking about her to other people.

“You alright, kiddo?” asked Professor Raptor with concern.

“I'm fine,” Hermione replied quickly. “I - er - does Harry talk about other things?”

“Can't remember,” he said, shrugging. “He just says a lot… I just wished he remembers that two hours has passed!”

“But did he -“

“Wait!” Professor Raptor said in a hushed voice, looking around. “I think I feel the power of my wand… but where is it?”

“Sir, your wand is right -“

“Shhh!” Professor Raptor rounded on her and pressed a finger on her lips, looking oblivious that his missing wand was just stuck in his boot. “I sense it… my wand!”

“Professor, your wand is just -“

“Quiet, Hermione - Remember that I was never here!” he said triumphantly.

And with one sudden move, her eccentric Professor dived under the brown carpet that stretched across the corridors and beyond. Hermione gaped, incredulously, as she saw the moving lump of Professor Raptor move further away from her and disappeared to another corridor while he sang in muffled tones.

Yo ho, Yo ho! A pirate's life for me!

“That was weird,” said Hermione blankly.

* * *

A few minutes later, Hermione skipped a step and landed on the entrance hall landing. Harry wasn't around so Hermione searched the semi-crowded entrance hall for him. She looked at her wristwatch to see there was only five minutes left… she hoped Harry didn't forget about her. Before she could give up, she accidentally bumped into someone and when she turned, she blushed slightly.

“Oh - Harry!” Hermione cried as she hid her blushing cheeks from Harry with her Arithmancy book leaving her eyes out for her to see Harry. “I - I'm sorry! I didn't see you!”

“It's alright, alright…” Harry waved a lazy hand, “But you were walking fast though… it felt like you walked right at me.”

Hermione giggled and Harry stood straight and let out his elbow.

“I have reason to believe that I am your escort, Hermione,” he said casually.

Hermione stared at Harry with amusement.

“Play it cool, Harry…” said Harry's voice.

“I never knew the famous Harry Potter would be such a gentleman for the Muggle-born,” said Hermione, wrapping her arm around his elbow. “Shall we?”

Hermione smiled at how Harry was less turbid than he was thirty minutes ago. The two climbed up the staircase toward the west wing where Arithmancy was located. Hermione heard Harry speak in his mind when they reached the fourth floor.

“Remember… be confident and just do it…”

Do what? Hermione thought to herself. Harry's face looked straight and confident.

“You do know you shouldn't be called an `escort',” said Hermione pointedly as the two reached the corridor of Arithmancy class. “You're just a friend accompanying me to class.”

“Well, I thought that you need your own escort every once in a while,” he said, smiling smugly. “Besides, you jinx like a girl.”

“Oho.” Hermione said to him in mock smugness. “For your information, Mister Escort-Me-Please, I don't think you're being serious.”

“Who said anything about that being serious?” Harry smirked at her in return. “Besides, you asked me, didn't you?”

Before Hermione could reply, she heard Harry say in his mind…

“Keep it mild, Harry… remember when you reach Arithmancy… just… do it... she'll feel flattered… don't worry a thing!”

Hermione wondered what was this all about… she then looked straight towards the Arithmancy classroom down the hall. Then it hit her - it was so simple… he had enough time to think it through… he sounded motivated… Hermione blushed a shade of scarlet at the thought of what Harry was going to do.

“You alright, Harry?” Hermione asked.

“I'm fine,” said Harry as they ventured to the corridor, nearing the Arithmancy classroom. “I'm just glad I get to talk to you for once after lacking - what we humans call - a conversation with you,” he chuckled.

“Well, thanks…” said Hermione kindly. Her mind was still in Harry's plan to do it after he brings her to Arithmancy class.

“Looks like this is it,” said Harry quietly. “I guess, I won't be seeing you in an hour.”

They both stopped in front of the Arithmancy classroom door which stood ajar. Hermione could see early comers sitting in their seats within the narrow opening.

“Well…” she said, looking at Harry, registering what he said. “…thanks for the company, Harry…” for the first time ever, as she stood there looking at Harry, she wasn't quite sure on what to say to him. “Er… you're sweet…” Hermione tilted her head, smiling.

This is it… I can't stop him…

“Erm - yeah, no problem,” said Harry, smirking at her. “Er - Hermione?”

“Yes?” Hermione asked briskly.

“Come on! Just give it a shot! She'll be both pleased and surprised! Just think positive, Harry!” said Harry's mind inside Harry's rather calm stance.

“Your - erm - I - noticed you -“ Harry stuttered. “Have… Ancient Runes class after this… and I was wondering - erm -“

“I can't believe I'm back out on this one! The moment is here! Not Ancient Runes class!” said Harry's mind anxiously. Hermione tried to hide her wide grin by biting her lip. She couldn't help but find him appealing at this moment… she liked the fact that Harry was still reluctant in doing what he was motivated himself to do.

“I was -“ Harry continued to stutter, “- wondering if I could walk you to Ancient -“

“Of course you can walk me to Ancient Runes, Harry.” Hermione said happily.

“Ugh… so much for my self-motivation…” groaned the voice of Harry's mind. “If you can't do it now, how can you ever do it right?”

The small smirk on Harry's confident yet disappointed-with-himself face made Hermione took an intake of breath. Suddenly, her feelings for Harry that she's been keeping at bay rose to a pitch that made her feel whole by just seeing him… she knew what to do for his own sake.

“Oh, and Harry?” she said simply.

Harry looked at her nervously.

“Yeah?” he asked unceremoniously.

“I love you, too.” and she walked up to him and lightly pressed her lips against his. She pulled away and looked at his eyes and said to him in a low voice, “So much.”

Without registering Harry's reaction, Hermione turned away and walked into her classroom feeling almost energetic, happy and fulfilled. She couldn't help but notice how the Arithmancy classroom looked bright and the fact that Professor Babbling was looking thinner than usual.

It didn't really matter what her condition was. If it wasn't for Fred and George, she wouldn't have felt this happy in a long while. Whatever the L-Ball did to her, it was for the best. She didn't care about the cure for her condition of reading minds. Hermione then grinned at the thought of planning to hold off sending the letter to the twins for a day. It wasn't necessary right now when she has a lot going on for her and Harry to be happy…

“I did not see that one coming,” she heard Harry's mind speak in dead shock.

So did I, Harry. said Hermione happily in her mind as she sat at her usual desk beside the window.

“So did I.” she whispered to herself and enjoyed the snowy view of the Hogwarts grounds below as a familiar snowy owl passed by.
