I Just Grabbed A Spoon
Harry sank into the couch in the Gryffindor common room. He removed his glasses as he massaged the bridge of his nose. He would never forget this horrid day.
“Stupid Padma… She's worst than Parvati” said Harry putting his glasses
He tried to remember the abysmal date he had with Parvati's sister. It was as worst as Cho's date with him. Harry hated reminiscence of that day and his date with Padma to add to the jar, he would suffer a mental breakdown.
He stared into space as he remembered the date he had ages ago
“That was so embarrassing” Padma said heatedly as Harry and she left the restaurant “What's the matter with you!?” she asked loudly
“What's the matter with me? I think you mean what's the matter with you!?” Harry shouted back “You wanted to go to that stupid restaurant in the first place!”
“Hey! I love this place! And if you ever try to say something bad on the things that I like -”
“Great!” said Harry angrily “Another Cho, eh?”
“You're unbelievable!” Padma said coolly “No wonder You-Know-Who fled the scene when he tried to kill you!”
This made Harry very angry
“Maybe it will be a lot more sensible if you said VOLDEMORT!”
Padma gasped as Harry shouted Voldemort's name. Harry could have swore he heard the people inside the restaurant gasp and scream
“Thanks for the night, Harry” Padma said glaring at him as she left
“You're welcome and thanks for mentioning how many times Davies went out with you!” Harry shouted after her
“What happened?” said a voice behind him
Harry turned to see Ron and Ginny holding Zonko bags looking aghast
“I just had a small disagreement” Harry said
Back to reality…
Harry sighed and looks at the fireplace. The real reason he and Padma had such a bad date is because during the time when they were in the restaurant, Harry was talking to a waitress and Padma thought he was blowing her off. Women could be so jumpy, Harry thought.
Harry groaned as he removed his jacket robes and tossed it on the other side of the couch. Today was a bad day and the source of all this was Hermione
Hermione was the one who set him up with a date with Padma
“Hermione, I know you are trying to help with my girl problem but do you have to be this supportive” said Harry as Hermione fixed his hair
“Doesn't this ever stay tame?” she asked
“Nope” said Harry looking at his watch “ten minutes before I meet Padma at the entrance hall” he gave out a small sigh
“Don't be nervous” Hermione said
“No I'm not… Oh, thanks for setting me up with someone” he grinned
“Thanks, anything for my first best friend” she said
“First?”
“I consider you my first best friend because it was you who asked to bury the hatchet with me, remember back in our first year?”
“Yeah” said Harry
“Let's see” said Hermione backing away to examine Harry “Would you like a corsage?”
Harry shook his head
“No thanks, they tend to make me sneeze”
“I see” she said rubbing her chin “You look handsome” she added
“Thanks” said Harry
“Look at the time. I suggest you go down right now. Good luck!” she said as she patted him on the cheek and ran up the girl's dormitory
Harry turned his head when he saw Hermione entering the portrait hole looking very worried and nervous
“I heard about the date” Hermione said walking to him “Ron told me”
“Yeah” said Harry “Thanks a lot”
“I'm sorry” she said sadly “I was just trying to help”
“I know but I have to admit, setting me up with Padma was kind of stupid”
“I said I was sorry, okay?” said Hermione sitting beside him stroking his bangs upward “Are you alright?”
“Yes” said Harry flatly then he sighed and said “No, I'm not okay”
Harry looked at Hermione who was giving him a sympathetic look
“You need a hug?” she asked opening her arms
Harry moved to her slowly as he felt her arms wrap around him
“I just don't get it” Harry said “I'm such a loser when it comes to girls”
“You're not a loser” said Hermione
“I am” said Harry “Cho thinks I'm tactless and Padma thinks I'm a cheater”
“Don't think that way, I know there is someone out there waiting for you”
“But what if there is one girl for every guy?” said Harry
“That's not true” Hermione said rubbing Harry's back “I don't believe in the `you are destined for each other' thing. It's kind of cliché and I have to admit I would rather compare a love life to ice cream than a fairy tale”
Harry raised an eyebrow
“Ice cream?”
“It's like” said Hermione thoughtfully “An ice cream has many flavors and you can pick as many as you want. When it comes to a love life, what I mean is that there are many guys and girls and that your choices are limitless. So why don't you just grab a spoon and try to find that flavor you always wanted”
“Grab a spoon?” Harry asked
“It means to try to ask someone out” Hermione pointed out
“What goes on in your brain anyway?” said Harry
“I know I think of crazy stuff but that's life” Hermione said
“But even though, the more girls I get the more my love life gets ruined
“Your point is?” Hermione asked
“The date that I just had proves that my love life will always be D.O.A.”
“Er… D.O.A.?” Hermione asked
“It means `dead on arrival'. Rapticon Sr. told me back at Grimmauld Place” sadi Harry
There was a long pause
“Its official, Hermione. Girls will never like me”
There was a long pause then Hermione took a nervous sigh and said
“I like you”
Harry made a fake cough
“Of course you do, you're my best friend and you'll always -”
“No” said Hermione pushing Harry away from her so she held his shoulders in arm's length “I really, really like you”
Harry gave her a quizzical look then the deep shade of red that appeared on her face gave Harry the realization on what she meant
“Oh” said Harry giving Hermione a look of surprise as she bit her lower lip “Since when?”
“Third year” she said quietly turning red as ever
“But why'd you set me up on a date?”
“Because I wanted to forget about my feelings for you” she said flatly looking sideways to avoid Harry's gaze as she put her hands on her lap
“Hermione -”
But before Harry could say anything, Hermione stood up quickly and said
“Never mind what I said Harry” Hermione shook her head “It's just silly”
Then she started walking towards the staircase that leads to the girl's dormitory
Harry watched as his mouth hung open. Hermione liked him. Really liked him. Sure, Hermione was a girl after all but why was he so blind? Every girl he liked or crushed on would end up dead with him not knowing that Hermione was the one who cared for him, gave him advice, and liked him for who he was, stood by his side when he had no one. Hermione was already at the foot of the staircase when Harry called
“Hermione, wait!” Harry called standing up from the couch
Hermione turned her head and asked
“What?”
“Erm… do you want - er… can you go… Er - Do you want to go out with me next Hogsmeade weekend, please?” Harry asked nervously
He was relieved when Hermione smiled and said
“I'd love to” then she waved Harry goodbye as she went up the girl's dormitories
The common room looked brighter than ever before. Harry then started walking joyfully to the portrait hole as he saw Ginny entered through it
“Oh, hi Harry” she said as Harry was about to climb out of the portrait hole “I hope you're okay - uh… why are you smiling? What's wrong?”
Harry turned to her and saw Ginny giving him a confused look combined with a smirk. Harry sighed and said
“Why do I look happy?”
Ginny nodded
Harry took a deep breath and said
“I just grabbed a spoon”
He left the common room leaving a confused Ginny to her own thoughts.
