Of Betrayal

It seemed like Harry’s heart jumped high into his throat, preventing him from talking. He looked up at the mysterious cloaked figure that had a firm grip on his arm and wondered whom this was. People around them were starting to look curiously, apparently able to show emotion to something of this caliber. The person with the vice-like grip on Harry pulled him along with them into the nearest side street, which was abandoned; Harry could hear Kaitlyn scream after them, but she drifted away from them, because of the power of the horde of side-walkers.

Harry finally managed to yank his arm out of the mysterious person’s grip, and take a few cautious steps back. The person looked both ways over their shoulder before they lowered their hood. Harry’s jowl fell from overwhelming shock.

“What are you doing here?” asked Remus J. Lupin, “I knew it was you.”

“Well, you see I’m…” Harry began to explain, “Wait a moment. What are you doing here in Shadow City?”

“Harry, I know what your doing. You need to use the Time Turner and return back to the past,” Lupin said seriously, “your messing with something very dangerous and deadly right now. Leave right now or I will be forced to get Dumbledore.”

“Dumbledore? He’s around? Where is he?” Harry asked, ignoring Lupin’s threat.

“Harry, Dumbledore from the past,” Lupin said, “believe it or not, but you aren’t the only one with a Time Turner. Now go back now and return that Time Turner to whomever you got it from. I know you didn’t get it from Hermione, because she wouldn’t have let you come into the future like this. Unless you stole it.”

“No, it isn’t Hermione’s. It’s someone else’s, and anyway go on and tell Dumbledore,” Harry suggested toughly, “I’m staying here no matter what. I have a mission to do and I’m going to accomplish it no matter what anyone says.”

“Harry, have you gone insane?” Lupin questioned.

“I dunno. Maybe I have,” Harry replied wittingly. He gave out a quick exhale and said, “look I would like to have your help on this, but since you refuse to help me, then leave me the hell alone. I’m doing this for the better of millions of people, Lupin. Not for me.” Harry walked around Lupin and started back through the side street as Lupin called after him.

“Harry!” Lupin called.

Just then Agnes Colmes and Kaitlyn came running through into the side street, obviously looking for Harry. When they spotted him, Agnes gave him a relieved hug and then smacked him across the head. She walked around Harry, and looked at Remus Lupin with noxious untrusting eyes.

“Stay away from him R.J Lupin,” she warned.

“Are you okay?” Kaitlyn asked concernedly.

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” Harry asked her back, “it’s only Lupin. I’ve known him since my third year.”

Kaitlyn looked over Harry’s shoulder, and gave Lupin a dirty look as if he had done something to her. Once she was done shooting acid with her eyes at Lupin, she looked back at Harry as if he were so naïve; Harry muttered ‘okay’ under his breath in a bit of an annoyed tone.

“Agnes, maybe you should be the one staying away from him,” Lupin retorted, “Harry doesn’t belong here. He needs to return back to the past. Dumbledore will be alerted.”

“Oooh! Albus Dumbledore! The renowned Albus Dumbledore! You don’t understand anything R.J. Harry does belong here and he’s here to change everything for the better. Why must you try to meddle in even that? Do you prefer the rule of the Lord?” Agnes cried, quite hysterically.

“You don’t even care about Harry,” Lupin pointed out, “you only want him here, because you want him to try and vanquish Voldemort.” When Lupin spoke of Voldemort’s name, both Agnes and Kaitlyn covered their ears with shivers. “Maybe you need to sort your priorities, Agnes.”

“I do too care about Harry!” Agnes argued.

Harry watched irritated as the two of them bickered like little school children. When he felt he had enough, he stepped forward and shouted, “ENOUGH! Listen you two, I may be sixteen years old, but I can make my own decisions since I in reality have no true guardian left. I am staying here, Lupin. Agnes, Lupin is my friend…don’t treat him like a criminal. Both of you just shut it and stop arguing!”

“You don’t know R.J,” Agnes shrieked, “you obviously don’t know R.J in the way I do!”

“Oh give it a rest, Agnes,” Lupin spat in annoyance. He looked over at Harry and said calmly, “that’s fine to know you’ve made your own decision, but I know that it’s wrong. I am alerting Dumbledore, and you will be removed from this time period within a few hours. It is for your safety of being harmed by Voldemort and for the safety of whoever else may come off the worse end. Good day, Agnes, Kaitlyn. And to you, Harry, be careful of whom you trust.” Lupin winked at him, turned away, and started walking down the deserted street until he was out of view.

Harry didn’t say a word; neither did Agnes or Kaitlyn for quite some time. Harry simply stood there staring after the last spot Lupin had been visible at, wondering for the first time since he had arrived at the future if it really was a huge mistake.

-|-

Days eventually started to pass and still Dumbledore or really anyone from the past had not contacted Harry. He had begun to wonder if maybe they hadn’t contacted him, because they had finally given up on him and realized that he was never going to obey their wishes; he hoped this wasn’t the case.

Living with Agnes, Kaitlyn, and the other eight children was a bit of a hassle. Most of them like Mort, Elizabeth, and Tawny badgered him endlessly it seemed with questions about him, most of them silly questions. Kaitlyn tried her best to make it more entertaining for Harry, but he still missed Ron and Hermione; he could tell she knew how he was feeling. Silver virtually refused to be in even the same room as him for some reason. And, Agnes had begun to treat Harry like any of the other children, making him do occasional chores.

“Why do you take care of them?” Harry asked Agnes on the fourth day of his stay. Agnes had been complaining once again about their blunt defiance. “You’re not their real mother. Why don’t you just give them away?”

Agnes dropped the mop that was in her hand, and looked over at Harry. “Because if I don’t take care of them no one will. They all came from the orphanage that was destroyed by the Dark Imperial Forces on order from the Lord. If it hadn’t been for me to rescue them, they all would have been dead,” she answered dismally.

Harry didn’t respond. He had now begun to hate Voldemort for a new reason. How could Voldemort be so evil as to order the murders of innocent children? The thought made Harry absolutely sick and revolted. He put down his rag once he was done dusting the family room and walked over to the front window to peer outside. He stared out at the mainly uninhabited roads thinking about Ron and Hermione; he wondered if they would be angry with him for what he had done. For the past few days he had been resisting to admit this, but at that point as he stood there, he finally confessed to himself that he missed them so much.

Someone was standing next to him, he realized. He turned his head sideways to see who it was. Kaitlyn had walked up next to him and was staring out the window sadly just like him. She smiled gravely at him when she noticed he had noticed she was standing next to him.

“I didn’t even know you were there,” Harry whispered, returning his eyes to the front window.

“Yes, I know,” she murmured, crossing her hands in front of her, “I understand. You miss them. It’s only natural that you desire to speak to your two best friends from the past. You left without a goodbye. No one can take their place.”

Harry didn’t say anything. He looked silently at Kaitlyn and then again out the window, just thinking. He didn’t want to make Kaitlyn feel bad; he felt sorry for her that her only friends were the eight other children that lived in this household and even then they weren’t her friends; she barely even talked to any of them. He knew exactly how difficult it must have been to spend your whole life being miserable without your real family, any friends, or even a real education.

“Yeah, I do miss them,” Harry confessed, “I wonder what their doing right now.” He couldn’t help, but chuckle a bit at the memory of them possibly quarreling at that exact second, but in the past. “But, it isn’t as if I haven’t made new friends.”

Kaitlyn grinned. “Me, too,” she muttered, “except I didn’t have any best friends to think about in the first place.”

For the rest of the time they spent staring out the window, it was in content silence. Harry had declared to himself that Kaitlyn was a friend, even if he had only known her for four days. There was something about her that he really liked and could not describe. When she looked at him, it was as if she was always thinking about him; he had never seen anyone with that look before.

“Let’s go outside,” Kaitlyn proposed, turning away from the window.

“Wouldn’t Ms. Colmes object to that?” Harry asked.

“I don’t think so and even if she would…let’s go anyway,” Kaitlyn said, opening the front door and stepping outside, “come on, I know this great meadow not too far away. No one’s ever there, no one will see us.”

Harry shrugged as he followed her. She led at a steady jog across the roads as Harry followed at her heels. They ran for a little over five minutes until she stopped and began hopping a wooden picked fence. Harry stopped for a minute, not sure if this was such a good idea, before he decided he would follow. Kaitlyn landed on her feet once she had climbed up the fence and jumped off onto the other side, as did Harry when he finished; it was apparent she climbed fences quite often.

“You see,” she said, beginning to run in the opposite direction of the fence. She stopped running and instead began twirling happily. After a few swift and feral turns, she landed backwards onto the grass.

“Are you okay?” Harry asked worriedly as he walked over to where she was now sitting.

“I’m fine,” she answered, pushing some strands of her black hair out of her face. She sat up straighter, and said as she pulled sticks of grass from the ground, “I always come here whenever I have a free moment. I’ve never ever seen anyone else here, either. That’s why I love it here so much.”

Harry sat down on the grass, too. “Are you sure this isn’t anyone’s property?” he asked inquisitively.

“I don’t think it is,” she replied indifferently, “but I come here anyway. It’s just one of my favorite thing’s to do.” She lay down completely so that she was staring up at the bright blue sky, and it’s white clouds. “I see a hippogriff…that is if there are still any,” she said.

“What happened to the hippogriffs?” Harry wondered.

“The Lord massacred most of them. He kept a few for his own purposes. Once in a while you’ll see some hippogriffs that are illegally kept. I met one that one of Ms. Colmes friends has. It’s adorable. I even had the honor of naming it. I named it Jamesy,” Kaitlyn answered.

“Jamesy,” Harry repeated with a laugh.

There was another silence between them. Kaitlyn continued to look up at the sky thoughtfully; Harry merely looked around him at the surroundings. Suddenly, Kaitlyn sat up, and twisted her body sideways to look at Harry.

“Harry, I hope you don’t mind, but can I call you my best friend?” she asked kindheartedly, her cheeks blushing, “I know I’m not your best friend, but it would mean a lot if I could say you were mine. Can I? If not, it’s okay. I was just wondering.”

Truthfully, Harry hadn’t been expecting that. He considered what she had said for a moment, before he said quietly, “sure. I don’t mind.”

“Okay. Well, since you’re my best friend, I guess I should be nice,” she figured with a half shrug, “I’ve been feeling guilty about keeping so much stuff from you. Maybe since you’re my best friend, I should tell you.”

“Tell me what?” Harry inquired immediately, “I would like to know.”

“You know how you’ve been interested in the truth about what happened to your best friends Ronald Bilius Weasley and Hermione Jane Granger, right? Well, if you want…I’ll tell you,” she mumbled.

“Yeah! Please do!” Harry exclaimed.

“Just please remember I’m not telling you this to hurt you, Harry,” Kaitlyn warned, “and even if you won’t believe now that you were betrayed by…”

“Betrayed? Who betrayed me?” Harry interrupted.

“Your best friend,” Kaitlyn replied simply.

“No, no they wouldn’t,” Harry disagreed crossly, “I know they wouldn’t.”

“It wasn’t they,” Kaitlyn explained, “your best friend…your original best friend. You know, Ronald Weasley.”

“Ron? He would never do what your –“ Harry growled.

“Let me finish, Harry,” Kaitlyn interrupted him, “Ron Weasley betrayed you the night of December 31st 1999, just before you vanished a little past midnight on January 1st 2000. I know it isn’t easy to accept, but he did.”

“How?” Harry asked, his throat hurting.

“You had planned a secret attack along with the Order of the Phoenix on the Lord. The Lord didn’t know a thing about it until Ron fed him the scoop,” Kaitlyn answered sadly, “he had been torturing Ron and finally he had cracked.”

“No,” Harry disputed, “I know Ron. I know he would never…”

“Ron died anyway,” Kaitlyn finished, cutting off Harry’s sentence, “he was murdered by Lady Lestrange on the same night as you. A lot happened that night. I remember it, it was storming like mad.”

Harry didn’t say anything; this couldn’t have been true. Even if Ron had been tortured, Harry knew that Ron would never be disloyal to him. Ron wasn’t the type of person that would betray someone close to him. And yet Harry couldn’t help, but believe what Kaitlyn said. Was this why he had been feeling distrusting to Ron lately? Maybe it was his gut feeling warning him of the future.

“Your other best friend,” Kaitlyn continued, looking a bit apprehensive of Harry’s stone expression, “Hermione Granger, she’s still alive. She’s Lady Napoleon, wife of Sir Jean Napoleon, one of the Lord’s main nobles.”

“Lady Napoleon,” Harry repeated in a whisper, recalling the two people on the sideway talking of Lady Napoleon’s elegance that day the nobles passed in their carriages and wagons. Harry remembered whom they had been talking about; the woman with the pale blue gown and curly brown hair…that was Hermione. “How could she marry someone close to Voldemort?”

Kaitlyn clapped her hands to her ears at the mention of the name. “Don’t do that,” she growled, annoyed. She uncovered her ears and said slowly, “It wasn’t by choice. Sir Napoleon made her marry him and there is no one to stop it. Sir Napoleon is an ally of the Lord.”

Once again anger surged through Harry. He now hated Voldemort even more, if possible and now he hated Sir Napoleon, too. Harry stood up, dusting away the little shards of grass that had gotten onto him. He started toward the wooden fence.

Kaitlyn stood up, too, and shouted, “where are you going, Harry?”

“I’m going to rescue Hermione!” Harry yelled in a reply.

“No, don’t!” Kaitlyn screamed desperately.

“I have to,” Harry roared, stomping his way toward the fence; he felt into his pocket and was delighted that he had his wand on him.

“HARRY, DON’T!” Kaitlyn screamed frantically, “Lady Napoleon doesn’t care about you anymore! In-in fact, she hates you! She hates everything and anything that has to do with the mention of Harry Potter! She’s very much changed since the past of when you know her…she’s very evil now. Very, very evil.”

Harry stopped walking toward the fence. He turned around to face Kaitlyn, and said, “she is?”

Kaitlyn nodded fervently. “Do you think I’d ever lie to you, Harry?” she asked with a frown, “I hate telling you this, but it’s all the truth. Ronald Weasley betrayed you and Lady Napoleon is happy being the wife of a very close ally to the Lord.”

”I don’t understand,” Harry said, his throat still hurting, “why would Hermione ever marry someone like that? When did she?”

For a moment Kaitlyn didn’t answer. “She married Sir Napoleon five years ago, I believe. It was just after you disappeared.”

None of this made any sense to Harry. The thought of Ron betraying Harry and of Hermione marrying an ally of Voldemort didn’t seem to sink in. He knew this was something he couldn’t understand. Kaitlyn walked over to him and wrapped an arm around him, giving him a caring hug.

“I’m here,” she informed, “I’m here for you.”

Harry didn’t say anything; he was still stunned and confused at what to think.

-|-

Another bark of thunder echoed as well as some flashes of lightening. Harry sat up from the grass and peered around him as best as his eyes could see through the thick sand blowing around. He could see both Hermione and Kira not too far off, both trying to stand through the disastrous weather.

He looked away from them and higher at the castle’s outline against the dark sky. He could see the many windows of the castle lit, and even some outline of faces looking out of them at the storm. His eyes were halfway from looking away from the castle, when next moment he knew the castle was on fire. There were bunches and bunches of black cloaked people on brooms from up above with wands pointing at the castle and everything below.

The people on brooms began shooting spells at the castle and even at Harry and the other three, themselves. They blew up Hagrid’s Hut, and continued to aim spells in Harry’s direction. Harry managed to dodge one very close to his shoulder out of luck, but his companions weren’t lucky.

Ron was the first to be hit by a spell from the mysterious people on brooms above. He fell to the floor and didn’t move any longer.

”RON!” Harry yelled.

Hermione turned away, and started running to dodge the spell that had been sent her way, but she hadn’t ran fast enough. She was hit right in the back, before she collapsed face first into the grass, also not moving any longer.

“HERMIONE!” Harry shouted. He started running drastically toward his two best friends sooner than he noticed that the entirety of Hogwarts castle was on fire now. The sight brought tears to his eyes. How could this have happened? How?

“HOW?” Harry screamed in a demanding tone, “HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED?” He was thrashing in his bed, nodding his head feverishly. He was sweating greatly across his forehead and his scar was tingling.

“Harry, are you okay?” asked a sweet voice of a person he couldn’t see; this person was holding his hand.

Opening his eyes, Harry discovered it was Kaitlyn. He sat up from his bed and pulled his hand out of hers to run it through his hair. He was quite confused, but he was sure that the dream had felt so real; he was sure it was real.

“I have to go,” he whispered.

“Go where?” Kaitlyn asked.

“Go back. Their in trouble,” Harry babbled, “the past. It’s in trouble. I have to go.”

“No, Harry, your not going anywhere” Kaitlyn said, trying to push him back into a lying position. “You were just dreaming. It wasn’t real. Everything’s fine in the past. Here is where the trouble is. We need you here.” Kaitlyn put her hand on top of his, and gave him a gentle smile, “I need you here.”

Harry looked down at her hand on top of his, and then up into her wonderful blue eyes. He nodded slowly in agreement as Kaitlyn leaned forward, and gave him an affectionate hug. He slowly let his hands wrap around her, too, completing the hug. She looked up from his shoulder and tilted her head closer to his, her lips pressing down onto his. He kissed her back; his mind going completely blank and forgetting all about the possible danger in the past.
