A Costly Battle
“Excuse me,” Hermione said with forced kindness, “it’s just Hermione. Just.” She looked over at Harry curiously, but he didn’t do anything except shrug, pretending to not really know.
“Um,” Harry stammered, “this is only Hermione from the year 1996.”
Agnes froze in mid-motion of going over to escort Hermione into a seat and clapped a hand to her forehead in forgetfulness. She grinned toothily at her stupidity, saying, “I’m sorry about that. My mind is honestly slipping me. Of course you’re from 1996. I apologize.”
She returned to the kitchen as Hermione said reassuringly, “it’s fine, no need to apologize.”
The three of them were invited to sit down to share breakfast with the nine minors and Agnes Colmes. Agnes, like Kaitlyn, at first seemed uncomfortable around Ron and Hermione. Though the breakfast was quite good, Harry wasn’t eating very much, because he was paying too much attention to the conversation going around the table; everyone seemed to be talking except Silver.
“So if you three are from the past,” Mort was saying as he chewed a mouthful of toast, “then do you mind taking me back with you? I want to go to Hogwarts. I want to learn to read properly and learn more. Can I, Ms. Colmes? Please.”
“Mort, don’t be silly,” Agnes said, “you’re not going back to the past.”
Hermione seemed to be shocked that Mort didn’t know how to read very well; both Harry and Ron grinned at the look on her face, because they knew it would be an absolute nightmare to Hermione if she didn’t know how to read.
“How’d you come back?” Ren asked interestedly, propping her rather ashy elbows onto the table. “Didn’t the legendary Headmaster Albus Dumbledore protest? Or did you sneak out without him knowing? Oooh, I hope it’s the second one. That’s so wicked if it’s true.”
“Well not really,” Harry answered, “we didn’t sneak out, no.”
“The three of you are going to have to wear cloaks with the hoods up if you ever expect to leave this house. Someone might spot you. Especially you two,” Agnes said, gesturing to Harry and Hermione, “everyone knows how you look, Harry. And Lad- I mean Miss. Granger wouldn’t want to be spotted either.”
“If I went to Hogwarts,” Tawny interrupted nosily, “where do you think I’d be sorted into?”
“Well there’s four houses,” Ron answered.
“We know,” said Wayne, “we’ve heard all about Hogwarts from Ms. Colmes. But she went there ages ago, so we’d love to hear what Hogwarts was like in more modern days.” He snickered behind his hands at Ms. Colmes age.
“Wayne, have some respect, will you?” Agnes reminded.
“I think you’d go into Slytherin,” Elizabeth said to Tawny, teasingly, “because you’re really evil and no one likes you. Plus your favorite color is green.”
“Not all Slytherins are bad, mind you,” Agnes commented.
“I would like to think I would be in Ravenclaw,” said Reyna, her very, very bright brown eyes looking around at everyone, “I’m very smart for my age. I already know my alphabet AND how to count to one hundred, you know. Most people my age barely know how to sign their name.”
Harry was happy to just listen in on all of their conversations about Hogwarts and the houses and he even enjoyed listening to Elizabeth and Tawny argue for the millionth time. He barely even noticed it when Kaitlyn tugged on his shirt to get his attention. He looked over to his left where she was sitting next to him.
“What house do you think I’d be in?” Kaitlyn asked softly.
“I would think you’d be a Gryffindor,” Harry told her, “you seem like a Gryffindor.”
Kaitlyn grinned at Harry and replied, “Just as long as I’m near you.” She played off her last comment in a joking manner, but that didn’t change Ron and Hermione both raising their eyebrows in question, Ron with a mild grin.
“That’s great,” Hermione muttered, “too bad Hogwarts doesn’t exist anymore in this time period.”
“I wish it did!” Mort moaned.
“Yeah, why does the Lord have to be such a jerk?” growled Tawny angrily, curling her very small hands into a fist and beating them against the table out of rage.
Everyone at the table immediately fell silent and the eight minors and Agnes stared at Tawny as if she were insane. Harry, Ron, and Hermione all looked around in befuddlement during the momentary silence. Agnes regained her strict manner and smacked Tawny roughly over the head, afterwards waving a finger in her face to scold her.
“You listen here,” she said in firmness, “you will never say that again about the Lord. Have you forgotten all he has permitted us to have? You will not have such ungratefulness under this roof ever again do you hear me? You have extra chores for such insolence and stupidity. You are not being educated, because the Lord feels it not required. Understand? Forget about Hogwarts.”
For another awkward moment there was nothing but quiet, everyone simply staring around at each other. Agnes refolded her napkin onto her lap neatly and began eating the last portion of her slices of toast.
“Erm…” Ron trailed off uneasily.
Silence fell again between them, no one doing really anything except for Agnes, who continued to eat as if nothing had happened; Tawny’s eyes were watery, looking as if she yearned to burst out in tears. Finally, someone said something more than ‘erm’.
Silver stood up from his chair, looking livid. He peered across the table at Agnes with his eyes extremely narrowed.
“What do you know about being grateful of all the Lord has permitted us to have? You complain everyday about the lack of money you have, the shoddiness of which this house was built, and the real chore it is to take care of all of us. You know nothing about being grateful to the Lord that consents us to live. You resent the Lord in every way possible and hope he comes to death at any possible moment or chance. You are the least loyal to the Lord so don’t pretend like you’re not. This,” said Silver, pausing and looking around at the other eight minors, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, “is hypocrisy at it’s finest. The one thing you will find all incompetent adults have in common.”
He stormed off from the very dingy dining room, this time leaving an even heavier silence in the room. Harry looked to his left at Kaitlyn; she looked like she too was on the verge of tears. Harry looked to his right to Hermione and Ron, who was sitting on the other side of Hermione; they both were looking more puzzled than ever. Lastly, Harry looked at Agnes. She was looking almost as enraged, as Silver had appeared to be.
Agnes stood finally and walked out of the room, apparently to Silver’s room to yell at him. Everyone waited until she left until they broke out in conversation.
“I didn’t expect that to happen,” Ron said, taking a sip from his glass.
“That Silver git,” said Hermione, “isn’t a very reasonable person. He speaks of Agnes Colmes being a hypocrite, but he too is a hypocrite; he shows no appreciativeness towards Agnes Colmes. He can hardly lecture someone on gratefulness.”
“Leave Silver alone,” Kaitlyn snarled, for the first time sounding angry, “you obviously don’t understand him.”
“Does anyone?” Ron asked shrilly with an unnecessary laugh, “he seems like one stupid bloke. Not Crabbe and Goyle stupid, but pretty damn stupid.”
“He’s just misunderstood,” Kaitlyn explained, her voice growing impatient of their judgments of Silver, “he has had a really tough time accepting that Agnes Colmes is his guardian, because he dearly misses his family that was murdered by the Dark Imperial Army.”
“Then why does he defend Voldemort?”
Kaitlyn clapped her hands to her ears as Ron shivered. She let her hands fall from her ears and glared at Harry, annoyed.
“Don’t say that name around me,” she said, “it’s the Lord, only the Lord.”
“You don’t fear the name, because you find it really scares you, you fear it since you’re told to by people older than you,” Hermione said rationally, “it’s not a real reason to be afraid of something, even if it works on ninety nine percent of people.”
Kaitlyn gave Hermione an extremely irritated look. She remembered her manners after a few seconds of not being in control of her temper. Kaitlyn now gave Hermione a very sympathetic smirk. “You and I have very different views on this matter,” she said in the politest voice, “I refuse to let you try and persuade me to change my views, thanks.”
Ron whispered into Hermione’s ear, “she told you.”
The older children, including Harry, Ron, and Hermione, cleared the table for Agnes so that she wouldn’t have to and decided they would surprise Agnes by starting on the chores. Shouting and yelling could now be heard from upstairs from both Silver and Agnes; Kaitlyn looked the most worried.
After about twenty minutes of screams coming from the room, Silver came tumbling down the stairs furiously with a sack over his shoulder containing all of his things. He wrenched the door open, ignoring everyone’s comments and questions about where he was going and disappeared into the outside world. Agnes came down the stairs a quick moment later, looking grave, but still remaining stubborn.
“It serves him right,” she said to them all, “he never respected me anyway. He’s almost eighteen, so he can support himself. He didn’t want to be here. There wasn’t any point in begging him to stay. We’ll all be better off once we put his grumpy character behind us.” She walked into the kitchen and didn’t say another word.
Kaitlyn was now crying completely, as she said, “how could she kick him out?”
“If you care about him so much, then why doesn’t he care about you?” Ron asked, obviously happy that Silver was gone, “he didn’t even say goodbye to any of you.”
Kaitlyn gave him a cruel look and buried her face into Harry’s shoulder, crying even harder. This brought back strong memories to Harry of the last time he had been cried on by a girl. He simply did the same thing as before and patted her consolingly.
“Don’t you think you’re overreacting just a tad?” Hermione inquired, irritated, “he didn’t look as if he was going to miss you.”
At this comment Kaitlyn spun around, giving Hermione a very fierce look again before she remembered she was supposed to be crying. She covered her face with her hands and spoke through them.
“Silver and I were very close. We were like a real brother and sister. If you lost someone very dear to you, you would be this sad, too. I don’t appreciate comments like that. I dearly cared about Silver for your information,” she wailed.
Hermione looked guilty. “I’m sorry,” she apologized with concern, “I shouldn’t have made a judgment. I’m sure Silver and you were very close indeed.”
“I’m going to find him and convince him to come back,” Kaitlyn said suddenly stopping her crying. She walked straight to the front door and put her hand on the handle.
“Wait wouldn’t Ms. Colmes get mad?” Harry asked, “and you can’t go by yourself.”
“I don’t know if she would. And you are right, Harry. I shouldn’t go by myself, you should come with me,” Kaitlyn suggested with a hopeful smile, “what do you say?”
“Erm…okay,” Harry answered.
“Hang on, hang on,” Ron interjected, “I’m coming, too. I want to see more of the future.”
“Sure,” Kaitlyn replied, “just the three of us.”
Hermione’s mouth opened in unfairness to protest. She put her hands to her hips and glared at Harry and Ron. “I’m not staying either if that’s what your thinking,” she said sternly, “I’m coming with you, too.”
“Fine,” Kaitlyn said, rolling her eyes, “you can come as well, I guess. Here Harry, Ron, you two should wear cloaks like Ms. Colmes said. We don’t want anyone to notice the two of you.”
“And Hermione as well,” Harry reminded.
Kaitlyn nodded and handed Hermione the last cloak, which happened to be the shabbiest. Hermione did end up trading Ron for his, though Ron did this very reluctantly, because the shabbier one had too many tears, reminding him oh so much of much of the clothes he had ever owned.
They headed out from the house and had started walking down the road, when Kaitlyn came up with the suggestion of taking the wagon. She claimed that Ms. Colmes wouldn’t mind if it was her who drove it, because Ms. Colmes trusted her the most of the now eight minors. The trio didn’t object to Kaitlyn’s suggestion and climbed into the wagon.
Kaitlyn said that Silver was probably heading to Shadow City to purchase some food before looking for a job or to Googlewalsh to try and join the Dark Imperial Army. She didn’t think he would ever go to Lord Metropolis and she also ruled out Oxford and pretty much any other village. No one objected to what she was saying, because to be quite frank, they didn’t have the slightest idea of where Silver would go.
They headed toward Googlewalsh first since it was closer to them than Shadow City. As they were riding in the wagon, Harry wanted to ask Kaitlyn how Silver could have possibly gotten to Googlewalsh or Shadow City so quickly when he was on foot.
An hour plus passed before they entered Googlewalsh; the entrance to the small city was a huge sign with the background of brown as the city’s name was painted in big, fancy white handwritten letters.
“Where exactly do you go when you want to join the military?” Hermione asked Kaitlyn from where she sat.
“You go to the Dark Imperial Forces Central base of course,” Kaitlyn answered.
“Wait is that such a good idea?” Ron questioned, “isn’t that like leading us into a trap?”
“No. Just keep your cloak hoods up,” Kaitlyn ordered, but the trio had already made up their mind they didn’t want to go anywhere near the base. Kaitlyn rolled her eyes as she began to turn the wagon around. “Fine,” she snarled, “we’ll just head to Shadow City then.”
“Can I ask you a question without seeming like a nosy prat?” Ron asked, not waiting for Kaitlyn’s answer, “if Silver is such a good git then why would he ever want to join the Dark Imperial Army? If he’s on our side why would he ever consider working for You-Know-Who?”
This was a good question. Both Harry and Hermione had been wondering the very same thing themselves. Kaitlyn seemed to be a bit annoyed with Ron’s question and took a while to answer it at first.
“Because that’s the only work Silver could really do. He isn’t a good crop producer, he isn’t smart, and he doesn’t have enough money to open up a shop. He pretty much knows already that most jobs in Shadow City don’t suit him and military is the only thing he’s positive he can do,” Kaitlyn explained.
No one replied. Harry felt that the answer had been very forward and truthful; all the things Kaitlyn had said about Silver seemed to be true, he did seem like the type of person that would be best to serve in the military. But still that didn’t excuse him forever considering working for Voldemort in Harry’s mind.
The wagon ride was quite serene and peaceful for the most part until out of almost nowhere, a carriage appeared just behind them, tailing them quite closely. Kaitlyn looked over her shoulder and at the carriage. She turned pale white when she saw who was in the carriage and sped up.
“What is it?” Harry asked. He couldn’t look at the people in the carriage, because he knew he couldn’t risk them recognizing him.
“Death Eaters!” she whispered fearfully, “they’re following us.”
“Why?” Ron asked.
“Because they want to stop us so that they can invite us to a tea party, Ron,” Hermione said skeptically, “they probably suspect who we are. I knew this was a bad idea. Do you all have your wands?”
“I’ve never had a wand,” Kaitlyn whispered.
“Yeah,” Harry replied.
“No,” Ron said, checking all of his pockets, “I think it’s in my robes or maybe in my trunk. Hmmm…I really don’t remember where it is actually.” He stared off pondering where he last remembered himself with it.
“That’s great,” Hermione muttered again out of skepticism, “two out of four of us have a wand. What should we do?” She looked pointedly at Harry for suggestions.
The carriage had now sped up and had rammed into them, almost sending them off whirling out of control. Kaitlyn quickly regained control, and tried to speed up. They had now left the very small metropolitan of Voracity and were now between that city and Shadow City, passing a vast space of nothing but trees and grass. The Death Eaters in the carriage rammed them so forcefully, this time they really did go spinning out of control and spun off of the road onto the space of the trees. Their wagon fell over upside down when it smacked into a very big red oak tree, sending most of them out of the wagon quite harshly and vigorously.
Harry landed on his stomach, his head smashing into a tinier tree. His arms and legs were positioned in odd angles at first and he had a hard time sitting up, because he was so dizzy. When he did, he peered at the overturned wagon and scanned around him desperately for his friends.
He spotted Kaitlyn almost instantly. She wasn’t too off from him, sitting up already as well, holding her out of pain. Harry quickly ran over to her to make sure she was all right. After she had confirmed her health, he turned back around and looked for Ron and Hermione.
The carriage of Death Eaters had come to a neat halt and three of them came milling out in search of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Kaitlyn, having a hard time, as there was so many trees. Harry found Hermione lying knocked out behind a tree just near the wrong side up wagon and was nearly spotted by one of the Death Eaters that happened to pass very closely by that spot in search of them.
“Hermione,” Harry whispered, shaking her, “wake up…we have to get out of here.”
It took a few seconds for Hermione to come to, appearing to be loads dizzier than both Harry and Kaitlyn. Harry asked her if she was all right after spotting that Hermione had gained a cut in the right corner of her forehead and was bleeding. Hermione said she would be fine and they began crawling very silently toward the direction in which Harry had left Kaitlyn.
They quickly spotted Kaitlyn, who had in turn discovered Ron. The three Death Eaters were now much farer away from them, thinking that they had run out deeper into the forest for escape. Harry whispered to the other three that they should steal the carriage, but at that moment the Death Eaters all turned around in their direction.
“I think they’re over there,” said a gruffly voiced Death Eater.
Directly the three Death Eaters started toward the exact direction where Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Kaitlyn were kneeling. The four of them immediately began crawling in two separate directions to escape the Death Eaters.
Kaitlyn looked over at Harry and whispered, “where are Hermione and Ron going?”
“They’re going the opposite way so that we have less of a chance to get caught,” Harry answered. He pulled Kaitlyn closer near him, so that she was completely hidden by the bush he was hiding behind; she smiled at him gratefully.
The three Death Eaters seemed to hear more rustling and movement and stopped. They looked both ways around them to make sure what the noise had been; Harry inhaled a sharp breath of uneasiness.
“I think I saw something move over there,” said a much thinner Death Eater than the snippy voice of the other Death Eater. This very skinny Death Eater stalked very quickly like an animal on the hunt for it’s prey through the trees, peering around every bush and tree.
Harry followed where he was moving, praying he did not locate Ron and Hermione, because he had headed into the direction Harry had last seen them; Kaitlyn was watching in hushed silence as well from over his shoulder.
The very skinny Death Eater finally turned away from his hunt and peered at his other two Death Eater companions. He nodded his head, signaling without words that he hadn’t spotted them.
“Damn,” growled the gruffly voice Death Eater, “they’re probably out of reach by now. Damn the Lord will not be pleased. He knows they are here…he wants them now. We will have to pay for this.”
The only Death Eater that hadn’t said a word yet, nodded. He followed the gruff voiced Death Eater towards the carriage as the skinny one hurried to catch up with them; they appeared to be leaving.
Harry spotted Ron poke his head out fully from a tree and whisper, “good they’re leaving.”
“There they are!” shouted the gruff voiced Death Eater; immediately they began blasting at the spot where Ron and Hermione were; Ron and Hermione very narrowly dodged the spells.
“Ron, how could you be so stupid!?” Hermione screamed in frustration as she sent some spells back.
Harry couldn’t just sit there and watch his friends battle the Death Eaters that had now started running toward them. Pulling his arm away from Kaitlyn, who seemed keen with sitting there and doing nothing, he ran out into the battle with his wand, blasting the very skinny Death Eater immediately.
“Harry!” Kaitlyn gasped.
The gruff Death Eater had headed straight for Hermione, blasting some very lethal spells at her. Hermione managed to block some of the spells and had to even jump out of the way of some of them.
“You’re going down, Mudblood!” he growled, stepping dangerously close now to Hermione, whose slash on her forehead was hurting now more than ever, contributing to the reason why she wasn’t able to battle correctly.
“Astranous Rectropum!” Hermione screamed, sending a purple colored spell at the Death Eater; he blocked it easily with his wand and continued advancing on her threateningly.
Meanwhile Ron was having to resort to throwing stones hard at the silent Death Eater, because he had no wand; he succeeded in hitting him square in the right eye, making him blind in that eye for the moment.
Ron eagerly took this as a chance to try and take the Death Eater’s wand, but the Death Eater shot him with a Stinging Jinx before Ron could do anything. Ron fell to the floor, beginning to feel the stinging sensation all throughout his body.
Harry blasted the silent Death Eater from behind with a sleep jinx, before he had to turn around and begin battle with the very skinny Death Eater, because he had tried to harm Kaitlyn, who also was defenseless like Ron.
“Envasato!” Harry roared at the skinny Death Eater, just seconds after he managed to dodge a Cruciatus Curse. From his wand an orange flame shot out, heading straight for the skinny Death Eater; he fell to the floor with a squeaky grunt.
“Harry, my hero!” Kaitlyn screeched happily, standing up and dashing towards Harry. She threw herself into his arms and squeezed him tight. She looked up into his face with a bright smile and said, “Thank you.”
With that she kissed him on the cheek, which happened to be surprisingly on the lower half of his cheek, nearer to the corner of his mouth. He didn’t hug her back, because he was simply in surprise. His eyes traveled up from her black hair and straight ahead of him; his heart almost stopped.
Ron was yelling frantically as he ran limply towards Hermione and the very broad Death Eater; by the looks of it, Hermione had stumbled while walking backwards away from the Death Eater on a tree root and had fallen quite hard onto the forest floor. She went to reach for the wand that had fallen out of her hands, but now the Death Eater was standing over her with his wand pointing straight at her chest, a malice grin also on his face.
“NOOOOOOO!” Harry shouted, pushing Kaitlyn out of his arms as he pulled his wand upward, desperate to shoot the Death Eater before the Death Eater shot Hermione. He ran as fast as he could as he blurted out the first spell that came to mind. “Levetavra!” he barked.
“AVADA KE- “ was what the Death Eater was shouting before Harry’s spell hit him right in the back. He fell firstly onto his knees and then collapsed forward, landing somewhat on Hermione.
Harry and Ron finally reached Hermione and knelt down concernedly. Ron pulled the Death Eater off of Hermione as Harry pulled her gently to her feet; her cut on her forehead was bleeding worse than ever.
“Are you okay?” Harry asked her, still trying to catch his breath from the momentary scare.
Hermione nodded slowly.
Kaitlyn had slowly made her way towards them with a now glum expression on her face. She stopped next to the trio, her arms behind her back; she didn’t seem to care that some hair had blown into her face.
“Are you sure you’re okay, Hermione?” Ron was asking Hermione anxiously as Harry turned to look at Kaitlyn’s gloomy expression. Ron suggested that Hermione lean against a nearby tree for support if she was feeling dizzy.
“What’s wrong?” Harry asked Kaitlyn.
“Nothing,” Kaitlyn answered.
“Shit!” Harry exclaimed suddenly. He had just noticed the Time Turner was no longer hanging around the silver chain; it had somehow fallen off apparently. He desperately looked at the floor around him for the Time Turner, but it wasn’t in sight. “I can’t find it!” he gasped frantically to Kaitlyn, “the Time Turner! I think I’ve lost it!”
“It’s okay, Harry, I’ll help you find it,” Kaitlyn said, her voice suddenly sweet, “no one else is helping you find it, but I will. I care about you a lot Harry…I’ve never cared about someone this strongly before as in the way I care for you.”
Harry stopped looking for the Time Turner and stared surprised at Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn simply began looking for the Time Turner as if she had said nothing surprising, when Ron shouted from where he stood next to Hermione leaning against the tree, “HARRY, LOOK OUT!”
Harry looked up just in time to see the skinny Death Eater standing a few feet away, his wand pointing straight at him. The skinny Death Eater roared out in a voice very much unlike his own, “AVADA KEDAVRA!”
“OH, NO, HARRY!” Hermione screamed, trying to stand, but failing.
Harry’s emerald eyes widened greatly as he watched the green colored spell blast his way in surprisingly slow motion; the only thoughts going through his mind at the time was how he was about to die without so much as telling everyone he cared about that he cared about them, without ever seeing Hogwarts again, without ever playing another game of Quidditch, without doing a lot of stuff that he had always wanted to do. He closed his eyes, unable to stand the sight of the green colored spell crashing into himself, but it didn’t.
Kaitlyn had leaped sideways, knocking him onto the floor and instead landing in the exact spot he was standing in. The green colored spell hit her directly on the chest, sending her falling straight backwards, already dead before she hit the floor. Harry crawled across the forest floor towards her out of desperation.
“Envasato!” Hermione screamed, using up a lot of her strength to send a spell at the skinny Death Eater; once more he fell to the forest floor unconscious. She lowered her hand, her hazel eyes traveling over to the spot where Harry was now kneeling next to Kaitlyn’s dead body.
“Kaitlyn,” Harry whispered weakly, blinking very frequently to block tears from exploding out of his eyes. He was holding her hand in his, shaking it lightly so that she could wake up. “Kaitlyn, Kaitlyn, please,” he begged, his voice very hoarse due to hurt.
Ron was standing very nearby, his face chalky white as he stared sadly down at Kaitlyn’s dead body; he looked as if he were about to be sick at the sight of a dead person.
Hermione was still leaning against the tree with her wand hand hanging aimlessly and tears running swiftly and silently down her cheeks; she too was an odd colored shade of pale white.
“Please,” Harry pleaded with the dead Kaitlyn, “just wake up. Why’d you do that, Kaitlyn? Why? Why’d you have to push me out the way? Why’d you have to sacrifice yourself? Why? Why’d you do that, Kaitlyn? Huh? Why?” He bowed his head so low his chin was pressing inside his chest as tears slipped out of his eyes leisurely.
Her blueberry colored eyes was still wide open. She looked so beautiful lying there and that made Harry feel like he was about to go insane that this innocent, smart, brave, kind, beautiful girl was dead, because of him; only because she had cared for him so deeply and had been willing to give her life for him so unquestioningly.
“Kaitlyn,” he whispered with a shaky voice, “I…I…”
He couldn’t finish his sentence. Instead he let himself exhale some more tears, not caring that Ron and Hermione were watching from a far; that didn’t matter to him.
“Kaitlyn,” he repeated so weakly now, so full of hurt, “Kaitlyn…”
