Chapter Two
Sirius's Story
Harry stared into the eyes of his godfather. Time stopped. The Dursley's over-clean kitchen fell away, his aunt and cousin became mere blurs. There was only Harry and Sirius left, staring into each other's eyes. Harry felt his heartbeat increase and his breathing became rugged. Sirius was alive. But his aunt's shrill calls made the world return and his awareness increased. Was it really his godfather?
“YOU!” Screamed his aunt, brandishing her broom. “You let this - this mutt into my home! Look at my kitchen! Get out! GET OUT NOW!” Harry just managed to duck his aunt's swinging arms and quickly scrambled to his feet as the dog started to growl and show its teeth. Dudley yelped from his cowardly spot on the kitchen table, his beady little eyes never leaving the great black dog. Before his aunt could actually hit him with the broom, he grabbed a handful of Padfoot's hair and tried to get him moving. After a few tries of trying to get the dog's attention away from his aunt, Harry managed to drag the canine from the kitchen, grabbing his wand in the process, leaving behind a trail of blood and mud.
Petunia's screams of rage followed him up to the second floor until he slammed the door and blocked out her voice. As soon as the door shut, he whipped around and pointed his wand at the could-be imposter. But the dog was lying on the floor, his chest rising and falling extremely slowly. Harry let his arm drop as the dog's eyes slowly shut. He slowly edged closer and poked it lightly with his wand. It didn't move. He did it again, harder this time. Still no response. So he cautiously knelt down beside the large form and placed a hand over its chest.
He could feel a faint heartbeat, slow and soft. When Harry pulled his hand away, it was coated in blood. Checking that the window was open a little, he quickly ran to the bathroom and gathered some tissues, bandages, water and antiseptic. When he returned to his room, the dog was still lying on the floor, his left leg twitching at odd intervals. Making sure the door was locked securely; he started to clean the dog's wounds.
Not knowing exactly what to do, he just cleaned the blood away from Padfoot's visible wounds, rubbing antiseptic into them. When he inspected its left leg, he noticed that it was slightly swollen and the dog let out a soft whimper when he moved it. Harry cleaned it as best he could and wrapped it tightly in a bandage. Once he had cleared away the bloody water and tissues, he sat on his bed and watched the great dog sleep. On more than one occasion it yelped but stayed asleep.
Harry watched how its eyes flickered from beneath the lids and his ears flicked after every one of his movements. He secretly hoped it was Sirius. But if it wasn't, he would be heartbroken once again. And if it was a Death Eater attempting to kill or kidnap him, then he would feel the same feelings he had when Sirius fell through the Veil. It would be like loosing him again, and this time, he didn't think he would get over loosing him. If it really was Sirius, then he would be the happiest person in the world. Nothing would be able to destroy him because he would have his godfather back. His family.
oOo
He must have fallen asleep, because Harry was awoken a few hours later by his aunt calling him to dinner. After checking to make sure Sirius was still asleep, he made his way down to the kitchen, where his relatives were already eating at an unhealthy pace. He sat down, uncomfortably aware of his aunt's angry stare.
“And what have you done with that thing?” she hissed at him. Harry looked up at her and drew his eyebrows together. “It's in my room, asleep.” He said truthfully. She grew white and her eyes popped. “What? What is it still doing in my home?” she screeched, although Harry could tell she was terrified of him. He smiled.
“I just told you, sleeping. If you have a problem with it being in my room, I could always contact my friends,” Harry waited for the usual response when he spoke of his abnormality. And he got it. All three Dursley's stopped eating and stared at him. Petunia's face went completely white and her jaw dropped. His uncle Vernon went completely purple and then slowly red. Dudley went white and his hands immediately went under the table, most likely to protect his bottom.
“You - you wouldn't?” Petunia whispered. “I would if you don't allow me to keep the dog,” Harry said lightly, chewing on the piece of celery he was given for dinner. “Then - then you can keep that - that thing, in you room as long as it doesn't make a mess and you have to buy - buy its dinner yourself,” his aunt stammered, her eyes scanning the room as if Harry's friends were hiding in the sink.
“Why thank you!” Harry said, finishing off his dinner and placing his plate in the sink. He could feel their eyes on his back as he left the room and climbed the stairs. When he entered his bedroom, the first thing he noticed was the absence of a dog on his floor. His heart skipped a beat when his eyes landed on the human form, sleeping on his bed. He had to pinch himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Sirius was alive.
But his once handsome face was scratched and cut, and his dark hair was matted by dry blood. His left arm was still bandaged and it was still swollen and bruised severely. Harry stared at the face of his godfather and felt his breath catching in his chest. Sirius was alive. The gravity of the situation finally hit him and he suddenly felt light - headed. Sirius was alive.
His eyes were suddenly stinging as salty tears slipped from behind his glasses and ran down his cheeks. He collapsed to his knees and brought his hands to his face, not wanting to believe it incase it wasn't real. Sirius was alive.
There he stayed for over an hour and only moved when an owl flew through his window and landed upon his desk. Harry looked at it in surprise and jumped when another three flew in after it. Amongst them was his own Hedwig and Ron's miniature owl, Pig. One of them was the usual school owl, carrying his booklist and such, and the other was a serious looking owl, clutching a thick, yellow envelope in its talons.
Harry realized, with a sudden jolt, that it was a Ministry owl, carrying his OWL results. He climbed to his feet and looked quizzically at Pig and Hedwig, both holding large packages. He took the letter from Hedwig and opened it slowly, surprised at what he read inside.
Dear Harry
Happy Birthday! Sorry this is a little late but I could only go out to get it today as we have all been very busy. Guess what? I have gotten my OWL results. I received 12! Can you believe that? I can't believe it. Both my parents are so proud. Do you have yours? Well, thank you for that letter and you are most welcome. I meant it. I hope you like your present, I thought it might be useful when things get too much to handle.
With all my love, Hermione
Harry had completely forgotten that today was his birthday. That meant that yesterday was Neville's birthday. He would have to send him a letter to wish him happy birthday. Harry took the parcel from Hedwig's leg and unwrapped it hastily. Inside was a book. No, not a book. A journal. And not just any journal. It was a magical journal. On the front it had Harry James Potter written in bold, gold text. It was covered in black leather and had a golden lock in the shape of a lions head. He flipped the lions head over and opened the book. There was an entry already in there, on the first page.
Dear Harry,
I thought this might be a better way to sort out your thoughts and write down those you wish to. Use this to unload all your terrors and remember your dreams.
Love always, Hermione
PS. You are the only one who can read the entries written on these pages. I thought it might be useful.
Harry fingered the many white pages and couldn't believe the thoughtfulness of the gift. It was just what he needed. Something to confide all his secrets to. He placed the journal on his desk and moved on to Pig. The bird was flying ecstatically around his ceiling, so he plucked it out of the air, glad he had good Quidditch reflexes. Pig's package was quite small and the letter was from Ron.
To Harry
Happy Birthday, mate! Everyone here says to send you birthday wishes and all that. Sorry I haven't written much but it's been hectic here. Mum's always getting us to clean some room. I was almost killed by a ghoul the other day, mate, I swear. I went to the loo and this creature came up from the pipes and scared me half to death. I swear I'm never going to the toilet in this place again. Mum said you are coming here soon, so be ready, mate.
From Ron
Harry picked up the small parcel and ripped open the paper, smiling at what he saw. It was a golden chain with a griffin pendant on the end. T had ruby eyes that seemed to glitter with life. A small note fell out as well.
Harry - Ginny picked this out for you and we went halves. It's an old magical chain that gets hot when danger is approaching or something. Hermione would know more about it than me. Ginny seemed to think it was a more appropriate gift than the Chudley Cannon's poster I was going to give you. I don't know why - Ron.
Harry grinned and slipped the chain over his neck. It felt cool against his skin and the griffin sat softly against his chest. He decided to open his OWL results first as he had been eager to open them since they arrived. He took the letter from the owl and it immediately flew back out the window.
“Mustn't want a reply,” Harry murmured as he ripped open the thick yellow parchment and pulled out a piece of paper.

Harry almost fainted. He had received ten OWLs? Ten? And he had passed Potions? Snape was not going to be happy, thought Harry suddenly, unable to keep the grin from appearing on his face. He placed the letter on his desk with the others and took the Hogwarts letter from the bird before it flew from the window. The first piece of parchment was his usual school letter and the second was not what he thought it would be.
Dear Mr. Potter
Due to the recent graduation of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team's captain, I have decided to choose you to fulfill that position as you have been on the team for the longest. I expect you to be able to continue the winning streak we have been on, and am confident that you will be able to choose the proper people for the positions available. Try outs will be held on the First of October and I expect you to make the proper arrangements regarding a notice to be out up in the Common Room and such. Do not let me down. And congratulations.
Professor Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
A golden badge fell out of the envelope into Harry's shaking hand. A golden lion sat on the badge, with a red background and the words Gryffindor Quidditch Captain engraved on the front. Harry's heart was beating frantically and his palms were sweating. He had become the Quidditch Captain. Just like his father. He briefly wondered if James would be proud. Then he wished Sirius was there at that exact moment before remembering he was. Harry turned quickly to the bed to find Sirius sitting up, watching him intently. His face broke into a crooked smile when Harry's face lit up, and his eyes glittered with that grey joy.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Sirius said.
