A Haunting Encounter

Draco sat up of the silky grass and stared at the inferno in the sky. The sun raged in an ocean of fire, much like Draco's raging heart.

Draco sighed and turned back to the dark stone prison he was being kept in. Being a Slytherin was a curse for Draco Malfoy. He only desired one thing and that was Ginevra Weasley; the girl who had ensnared his heart with her chestnut brown eyes and gentle smile. He had given up everything for her but she would never even look at him. She had no time for a Slytherin and this hurt Draco more then anything.

Why won't you just see past my name? See beyond the Slytherin and see the boy before you?

He had asked himself this several times but he already knew the answer. It was the same reason why he had despised her all his six years at Hogwarts. That was until he had lost himself to her clutches. Her very essence held him spell bound.

And yet she doesn't even notice me. She only has her smiles for those Gryffindors.

Draco walked through the castle courtyard lost in thought. The dark brooding walls reflecting his tortured mind.

“Draco,” someone called in a distant voice, “Draco come inside.”

Draco turned his face towards the intruder, his gray eyes glinting in the fading sun.

“What do you want?” he said frowning.

The girl looked at him worriedly, “Draco please come inside. You can't stand out here forever you know. You'll catch a cold.”

“As if anyone cares Pansy,” Draco said harshly, “You're all a bunch of hypocrites.”

Pansy sighed. “Draco please don't take this out on me. You know I'm still your friend. Why do you keep pushing me away?”

Draco stared at Pansy and laughed bitterly. “You of all people should know Pansy.”

Pansy touched his arm lightly, “I still care about you Draco. I've been your friend for seven years now. I'll always stand by you.”

Draco looked at Pansy sharply, “You know I can never care about you in that way…why do you still bother with me?”

“Because I love you! So please Draco, if you can't love me back at least let me look out for you like a friend should.” Pansy gripped his hand and looked at him pleading with her dark blue eyes.

Draco looked down at her and sighed, “You know you're putting yourself in danger doing this Pansy.”

“I know. But it's a risk I'm willing to take.” She whispered.

Draco nodded, “Come on then. Let's go back inside.”

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Draco and Pansy entered the Great Hall together. Draco felt rather then saw Ginny sitting in her usual seat, laughing gaily with her fellow Gryffindors. She flicked her long flaming hair and looked across the Great Hall. Her chestnut eyes rested on Draco's gray eyes. It seemed like time froze as Draco lost himself in those deep brown depths.

“Draco” Pansy said concerned.

Draco tore his gaze from Ginny and looked at Pansy, “Hmm?”

“I said you're blocking the path.” Pansy said looking at him curiously.

“Oh… right” Draco said absently as he looked back at Ginny, who was once again laughing.

Pansy dragged him off to the Slytherin table and sat him down. Draco barely ate. He mostly just stared at Ginevra Weasley, with deep longing and hate. Pansy knew the conflict that was going through his mind. He hated and loved her. Wanted to protect her, but also wanted to hurt her as much as she hurt him. It was a never-ending battle between Malfoy and Draco.

Pansy sighed; “Draco please eat something.”

“I'm not hungry” Draco said scowling.

“You're only going to make things worse.” Pansy scolded.

Draco looked at her frustrated, “Stop trying to act like my mother Pansy.”

Pansy rolled her eyes, “Draco, don't push your luck. I may be your friend and I may care about you, but if you keep snapping my head off I'm going to leave you to your own spiteful temper.”

Draco glared at Pansy, who glared right back. “Ok I'm sorry. I'm just in a bad mood.”

“I know,” Pansy said more warmly, “But Draco I'm only trying to help.”

Draco sighed; “I know Pansy.”

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Draco was sitting by the crackling fire, his eyes half closed as he began drifting uneasily to sleep. A hissing sound from the fire made him sit bolt upright, and he sprung from the chair to stare at the fire. Breathing heavily Draco looked into the cold face of his Father, Lucius Malfoy.

Draco fell back in horror, “Father?”

Lucius smiled cruelly at his son, “You look surprised to see me son. I had thought you would be happy.”

“But…you're dead.” Draco said warily.

“Oh no Draco, I am very much alive. And I will have my revenge...”

Draco sat up of the ground breathing hard. He looked at the fireplace wildly, but all he could see was the dying embers.

Was it just a dream?

Draco sat up and rubbed his head. This couldn't be possible. There is just no way he can be back. It had to have been a dream!

Draco sighed, he had told no one what had happened over the last summer. The only person who knew was his friend Pansy. She and her family were coming to visit, but instead she had found him covered in blood, lying unconscious in the ruins of Malfoy Manor. His Father's body lay dead next to him and his Mother's dead body lay only a few feet away.

Draco stared blankly into the dying embers. He had hoped to forget that day but nothing could get rid of the images firmly painted in his mind.

Why does everything seem to fall apart? My family, my whole life has been shredded to pieces. How can I ever make things normal? What can I do? I'm all alone now…

Draco stood up and sat on the edge of his bed. Not only did he have the pain of his past, but also he had to face the torture of being desperately in love with a girl who despised him.

You're a mess Draco. Just forget about her. She'll only make things worse.

How can I? I've tried everything. I want to stop loving her but I can't. When I close my eyes, all I see is her smiling face. She makes me feel alive.

She'll only bring you pain. She'll never love you. You have to let her go.

I know…
