-Lily-

Several days after my brief imprisonment in the Hospital Wing, I was still being watch over closely by the new nurse, Madam Pomfrey. I found it quite annoying, but apparently Meara found it highly amusing. I was now forced to attend all meals, not literally of course, but if I didn’t some schizophrenic house-elf would come after me and inquire of the “miss’s well-being.” Honestly, a girl passes out once and they put you on the crazy, untreatable thug list for life. It’s not like it was bad necessarily, just slightly unhealthy. At least it wasn’t because I just wanted to look like those stupid models like most of the other girls in the country do.

Speaking of other girls, the silence in my dorm was shattered as Laila Geer and Violet Philips walked in, chattering in a hushed tone about their newest ‘project.’ Their projects usually included a copy of the latest Witch Weekly and the latest conquest of all the girls of our year. I didn’t even try to keep up with their cycles; I had long learned to stay away from them. Violet was sweet enough, but Laila was just plain nasty to people she didn’t like.

Laila and I had had a good beginning to our friendship, but it quickly dissolved when I became close to Meara. Being both pureblooded families, Laila and Meara had known each other for quite some time. To make a long story short, Laila doesn’t appreciate sarcasm in times of irritation. Let’s leave it at that.

It took the two girls a moment to notice me, sprawled across my bed reading my book. When Laila caught sight of me, she frowned.

“Could you leave, Evans, we’re doing something important,” she said in a sickly sweet voice.

“How about not?” I glanced up briefly and then returned my eyes to the page. I got about two words further before Laila spoke again.

“What are you reading?” she asked in the same tone as before.

“Why do you care?” I retorted, glaring her for interrupting my peace and quiet.

“I was just curious,” she pouted and walked over to my bed. “Let me see it,” she grabbed the book from my hands before I could react and scanned the title. Her face twisted in disgust suddenly.

“Is this book…Muggle?” she said the last word almost as if it was an obscene curse word.

“So what if it is?” my eyes flashed, challenging her to do something.

Do something she did, she flung it across the room with an energy I didn’t know she had. The thick book that she threw careened onto the hearth, only an inch or so from the blazing fire. I felt a cry of rage bubble in the back of my throat, but as I watched as Laila gave the book a nudge of her foot, I found myself unable to make a sound.

As the orange tongues swallowed the book, I heard myself say, “No…No…No,” rather to myself than to Laila or Violet. When I finally tore my eyes away from the newly enforced fire, they met paths with triumphant icy blue eyes. I held Laila’s gaze for only a second, before I lunged at her with fury.

I tackled her to the ground and used my only available weapon at the time, my nails. I scraped them across her unflawed complexion with a passion to hurt the girl that I had never encountered before. As if in a far away echo, I heard her screaming at someone and me yelling hoarsely at her. I continued to scrape at her face until someone yanked me away from the Laila forcefully. As I was righted upon my feet, I realized tears were streaming down my cheeks and I was shaking slightly. My breathing slowly steadied and I realized what I had done. I had willingly attacked another student and possibly injured them. That alone was probably worth a week’s worth of detentions, but I wasn’t worried about that right now. I knew that Laila would deny provoking the attack and say I attacked her for no reason. Anything Laila said, of course, would be backed up by Violet. Which meant, I was in big trouble most likely, unless someone had mercy upon me.

Realizing that a conversation was going on without me, I tuned into their words.

“…. Not my fault. Her stupid book fell into the fireplace and she just attacked me, Bethany…” Laila was lying straight-faced to Bethany Dare, the Head Girl. What a…

“Evans!” ’s voice cut through my thoughts, “is this true?”

“No,” I snapped, snarling at Laila. “She threw it into the fire when I wouldn’t leave so Violet and she could talk about the latest boy on the market.”

looked tired and annoyed at our squabble but glanced at both our faces, mine streaked in tears, Laila’s in cuts and scratches from my nails.

“Look, frankly, I’m too tired to deal with this right now, okay? Even if I was in top form, I couldn’t do this alone, so I’m doing the only thing I know to do, I’m taking you both to Dumbledore and letting him decide,” stated in a weak voice. Though I had noticed that she was tired, I hadn’t realized she was that tired. usually didn’t give up the chance to prove her authority to anyone. I made a mental note to have a conversation with her later. Bethany had always been something of a big sister figure I never got to experience due to my own sister being so incredibly…normal.

“Come on then Geer, Her eyes darted back and forth between our faces

Evans, you-er- what’s your name again?” finally turned to Violet who was watching the proceedings with a white face and shocked eyes.

“V-Violet Philips,” her voice shook slightly. Her eyes flicked to where Laila stood, in obvious desperation. Stupid followers, they can’t do anything without a leader to dictate their minds. People in this world need to figure out that they can think for themselves and don’t need the other supposedly smart people to do it for them…and I use the term ‘smart’ very loosely concerning those people.

nodded in recognition at the girl. She seemed to be deciding whether or not Violet should come along with us or stay here.

“For now, I would like you to stay in this dorm until Evans and Geer get back from their little conference, and not go anywhere. If Dumbledore wants to see you, I’ll come fetch you, but be warned if I come and you aren’t here, your going to get a lot more than a few points taken off, Philips,” Bethany threatened her. Violet nodded with visible fear in her eyes. What a heart of steel, I swear my house is full of sissies.

nodded again, and motioned Laila and me to follow her out of the dorm. As we descended along the stairs behind the Head Girl, many questioning eyes followed our progress. It wasn’t often that escorted anyone from the dorms.

Once we exited the common room, we headed down the long corridors towards Dumbledore’s office, in which I had only been to once in my whole Hogwarts career. I swallowed my anxiety and shifted my eyes to glance at Laila’s face. She looked worried, as well. Served her right, that cow. She has no idea how special that book was to me. Just because it was written by a damn Muggle doesn’t mean its trash. If I had had the chance, I would have made sure she got more than a few scratches. I felt a painful pressure on my heart as I thought of the book. It was nothing special, just a random book my mother had picked up in a small, dusty second-hand bookstore. It was nothing but a birthday present, my last birthday present from my mother.

I remembered the day of my birthday, how my mother had smiled at me so brilliantly. When she handed me the book, I had caught onto her smile. It was worn and the pages were dirty around the edges, but that was how I liked my books. Worn and used a bit, but not falling apart, just right. They were always too stiff when you buy them from a firsthand bookstore, so I always got them from the second hand one that’s a few blocks away.

Before I realized it, we had reached the smirking gargoyle that guarded the entrance to Dumbledore’s office. Just as was about to say the password to open it up, two boys tumbled out. They were both grinning like maniacs, splitting their faces, but still…they were recognizable. James Potter and Sirius Black, the ass and bigger ass, it depends on the day for who’s the bigger ass. It was always a close run, though.

“Potter, Black,” greeted them frigidly, sending a look at the two of us that said clearly not to say a word.

“Dare, how you, babe?” Black flashed his smile that made most women of Hogwarts fall at his feet. ignored him, and pursed her lips.

“Get back to your dorms before I write you up,” she shooed them away.

“As you wish, Dare, as you wish,” Potter bowed mockingly. I rolled my eyes at their childish behavior. The boys here were such idiots. Suddenly Potter seemed to notice Laila and me standing there. He grinned at us wolfishly as he examined our faces.

“Get in a bit of a scrape there, Geer?” he smirked at her. Laila’s face twisted in rage at Potter’s comment, but she kept her mouth shut.

“Is that you work, Evans?” he turned to me, a small smile had replaced the sneer. I nodded, leveling him with a bored glare.

“Nice, never knew you had it in you,” Potter grinned at me.

“Come on Evans, Geer, you guys have some explaining to do to Professor Dumbledore,” announced before I could answer him.

I turned around to see the stairs still in place that wound up to Dumbledore’s office. I glanced over my shoulder to see Potter and Black walking away, talking about something I couldn’t quite make out, all I caught was, “…could you…goblet…bedpan….” Before shoved me up the stairs to go face the music.

zettazofia – thank you for your review, and I hope I you like this chapter J I look forward to hearing from you again

cahkoh – I would re-upload the first chapter but the word count for the story gets all messed up and I’m a perfectionist like that but your right, I didn’t catch it until after I posted it, the Latin words are supposed to be “Clara Stella”

Nadine – I have read priori incantatem at ff.net before I think I remember the name, but I read so many over there I get all mixed up lol J this chapter isn’t very long but I’ll start making them longer when I have the time to write for long portions of time

Ren – you’ll find out Sirius’s stunt next chapter, I think, but I can’t promise, but I left a teeny hint at the end…hope you won’t be disappointed! Thanks for the review!

Hpfanmelissa – thanks J I read so many unrealistic fics to get inspiration on how not to write a fic if that makes any sense lol so I try to do that kind of thing to remember these are supposed to be real people not stick puppets who suddenly fall in love without batting an eye

LJstagflower4e -- thank you, I get so tired of that, why in the world would lily’s parents be randomly attacked by DE’s? If they’re going to die at least do something creative is my theory, plus I love to kill characters off, don’t ask its like this morbid fascination with the way people react to it lol

tiduarte, Christina, Charlie – thanks for reviewing!!!
