Bring Me to Life
1. Bring Me to Life
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters, I'm only borrowing them 'cause I've got to write something, and as my muse is currently incapcitated, I'm relying on character muses from different books and what not... *glares over at Emma* J.K. Rowling owns the characters from Harry Potter, and Evanecence owns the song. I just own the idea that I got when writing this... No copyright infringment is intended, as it is written purely for the my sick twisted enjoyment as well as that of others.
Notes: I know that this has been done before, but I wanted to take a stab at it. Hope that you enjoy. (Err... just one thing though... the beginning is really good... but I think the ending sucked. Tell me what you think about it... please, I might write more songfics in the future.)
How can you see into my eyes like open doors
Leading you down into my core
Where I've become so numb
Without a soul
My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home
Her eyes fluttered open. Her entire body protested that one simple action, but there was something that was telling her to get up. There was something that was wrong. For a few moments she almost panicked because she couldn't remember what happened; she didn't know where she was, or who she was. She noticed that there was a sling on her arm and a bandage wrapped around her forehead, as well as a splint set up on her leg to hold it in place. Something bad had happened, and suddenly everything came back to Hermione.
They were in their seventh year. Harry, Ron, and herself. It was towards the end of it, actually, the last time she had been awake, that she remembered, they had only just finished taking their NEWTS... They had been celebrating the fact that they didn't have to anymore. Well, Ron and Harry had been. As well as the rest of the seventh year Gryffindors. But Hermione, well... she had been reading a book.
She had been sitting there, reading "Hogwarts: A History" for the millionth time. Or was it really that many times? Hermione couldn't remember, but she was reading it again because she kept on learning more and more about the school that she would be graduating from soon. Hermione had been ecstatic at the beginning of the year just to be going back to school. She hadn't really thought about it being her last year, nor had she really cared until right around christmas. Then everything had hit her with a sudden realization that it was indeed their last year, as it did to every other seventh year.
But this night it didn't seem like any of them cared. They were all celebrating with the tons of Butterbeer that Harry and Ron had snuck into the common room. Hermione herself was drinking some of the butterbeer, while others in the room were doing other things. Ron and Harry were playing a game of wizard's chess, and it actually looked like Harry might beat Ron (but, if Ron wanted to of course, he could have easily beaten Harry. He was just a move away from checking his king.) Lavender, Seamus, and Dean along with Parvati were playing a rather loud and enthusiastic game of Exploding Snap. Neville was sitting there watching them play the game, nursing a butterbeer and enjoying all of the commotion that was going on in the Common Room. All of the underclassmen were up in bed, all not having the energy to stay up with as long as the eight seventh years.
"Check." Ron said finally said, a smug tone in his voice. They were playing right next to Hermione, and then a loud SNAP! resounded throughout the entire Common Room as Seamus threw down one of his cards.
Hermione rolled her eyes, fighting the urge to say "Oh, honestly! All of you..." She didn't, however, deciding that throughout all of this distraction that she should just watch everyone else like Neville was doing. Some grumbling and cursing soon followed after the loud snap of the cards, as Seamus had managed to win the game of Exploding Snap for the past three rounds.
"You know," Harry said, disappointed as he watched the his king on the chessboard get blasted to smitherines by one of Ron's other pieces, "all of this is getting boring." He frowned. He yawned, stretching.
"Oh come on now, Harry, don't tell me that you're going to be the first to give up and go to bed!" Ron said, grinning, knowing that Harry was just sore at him because he beat him at the game again. "It's not even one o'clock in the morning yet!"
"Actually I think that we should all go to bed." Hermione interjected, "best not sleep the entire day away tomorrow."
"Ah, isn't that what we're supposed to do during the weekend?" Dean said, dealing out a round of cards again.
"Yes... well.. it is the last Hogsmeade weekend this weekend, the last one that we'll ever have here at school. I don't really want to miss it..."
"Pavarti, love, you'll be able to go there and do whatever you want as much as you want after we all graduate from Hogwarts! I say we go out and try to find a more potent type drink and get smashed!" Seamus added, taking another swig of his, disappointingly not-potent-butterbeer, and looking around the room to see if anyone agreed with him.
"No, that'd just get all of us in trouble!" Lavender said, dismissing the idea with a wave of her hands. "I say Pavarti and I give everyone a Tarot reading!"
"That sounds like a good idea!" Everyone else in the room groaned at Pavarti and Lavender.
"Oh, now that is the most ridiculous thing that I've ever hear--"
Hermione was interrupted by a sudden loud crash outside of the common room door, as well as some callings of spells, swearing, and another loud crash. There was the shrill scream of the Fat Lady from her portrait, and all of the seventh years were startled. Neville jumped so badly that he dropped his butterbeer, making the glass of it's bottle shatter. Harry jumped up quickly, sending pieces of broken and none broken chess pieces all over the place. Ron and Hermione did so also, Hermione over turning her "Hogwarts: A History."
"What the bloody hell was that..." Ron asked, starting to make his way towards the Common Room door.
"No, Ron, I don't know what it was, mate, but I don't think that it would be a good idea to go check it out a-"
"But! Harry, what if someone was attacked or something?" Lavender asked, seemingly scared by the way that she spoke, keeping a death grip on her wand.
"Then I think that we should go check it out!" Neville interjected, his eyes widening.
"Yeah, and what? Get caught in the middle of a fight? Puh. I'm going to bed, best all of us should..."
"Well I don't know about any of you, but it's my duty as Head Girl, and I'm going to go see what it is." Hermione scowled at Seamus, and then sent a death glare at Pavarti, who was trying to sneak up into the girl's dormitories.
"Where are you going?"
"I... um... well, someone should wake the other girls up!" There was another loud crash outside of the Common Room, but this time it shook the entire place; maybe the entire school. It sent everyone sprawling all over the place, Hermione falling back onto the couch that she had been reading in. As Ron and Harry had unconsciously moved towards her when they first drew their wands after the first interruption that they had heard, and being that Harry was the closest to her, he lost his balance and fell right on top of her. She let out a "oof!" as he landed on top of her.
The entire school shook. Long and hard. Fearful for what might be going on and that the other students should know about what was going on, Pavarti and Lavender ran up into the girls dormitories, splitting up, yelling to all of the girls to get up, for the first years to be watched by the sixth years, and what not. Dean and Neville did the same... they did all of this as soon as the school stopped shaking.
"Harry... do you..."
"Oh! I'm sorry Hermione!" Harry jumped up, flustered, and looked to check on the remaining people that were in the Common Room. Ron had stumbled back into the wall, somehow managing to stay standing. Hermione flushed also, damn her... infatuation with her best emerald-eyed friend....
Seamus was knocked out cold. He was also pretty close to the Fat Lady's portrait entrance, and the all of the trio froze in whatever it was that they were doing.
"S-Seamus?" Ron asked, about to walk over to where he was, he really wasn't that much of a friend with Seamus, but none the less, he was probably hurt...
"Ron, don't, I have a feeling that going over there alone isn't much of a good idea...."
Ron whipped his head in Harry's direction. "And why might that be?"
"Because I was trying to tell everyone that my bloody scar is aching and that we shouldn't split up just to--- Ah! Dammit..." Harry suddenly hissed and hunched over, clutching his scar, collapsing back onto Hermione. She worriedly grabbed onto him, keeping him from hurting himself, as it looked as though his scar as hurting as worse then it ever had before.
"Oh! Shit!" Ron jumped, startled when Harry suddenly violently twitched, screaming out in pain from his scar. "I thought Dumbledore said that something like this wouldn't happen again after Harry mastered Occulmency!"
The Fat Lady screamed again, and there was another loud crashing, as if something was being torn off of a wall. Harry's scar stopped hurting, as he momentarily went limp in Hermione's arms, and two figures entered the Gryffindor Common Room.
"Well, might I just say now that Dumbley Dory is a big fool!"
"Bella, if you would please..."
"Oh! Right! Sorry, Master..."
Lord Voldemort had somehow invaded Hogwarts.
"No!" Hermione suddenly yelled, turning onto her good side, and stifling a sob.
Oh, yes, did she remember what had happened... everything had happened so fast that it was almost a blur... Harry jumping up to protect Ron and herself, fighting the pain in his scar, Bellatrix Lestrange managing to cast some sort of spell on Ron, herself getting knocked back into something... after all of what she remembered before the attack, that little bit was all that she could remember. And it scared her to death.
"For goodness' sake! What is going on..." Madame Pomfrey, the Hogwarts nurse, came running into the infirmary to see what all of the commotion was about. She skidded to a halt when she saw that Hermione was awake, and Hermione swore that she heard her let out a very long and shaken sigh of relief. "I see that you have awakened, Miss Granger..."
"I... I--... Where is Harry? An-and Ron?" Hermione asked suddenly, almost sobbing again, fighting back tears. Madame Pomfrey just clucked her tongue, something that sounded almost like a chicken, as she bustled about checking on Hermione's vital statistics and checked her broken arm and leg.
The healer just ignored her for the moment, frowning slightly as she decided whether or not she could take the splint off of Hermione's leg yet, and if other parts of her body had healed well. She nodded slightly to herself, most likely deciding that Hermione's leg was healed, and with a wave of her wand the splint was off of Hermione's leg. Madame Pomfrey did the same to Hermione's arm.
This went on for a few minutes. Madame Pomfrey just checking up on Hermione. And she was getting tired of it, wanting to know what had happened.
"Madame Pomfrey, please... are Harry and Ron alright? The other students? How long has..."
The healer quieted Hermione with a wave of her hand. She sighed, frowning. "You'd best get more rest, Miss Granger, I expect that it might be quite a shock when I do tell you what happened, and at the moment I don't think you're ready--"
"Bullocks." Hermione took a shuddering breath, sitting up farther and straighter up on her bed. She managed to tame her sudden urge to break down into sobs. "How long have I been unconscious?"
Madame Pomfrey sighed. "I should think..." she paused, doing some sort of calculations inside of her head, "three weeks, I believe. You took quite a nasty hit..." The healer scowled when Hermione almost jumped out of the bed.
"Three weeks?!" That meant that she had missed her graduation ceremony, and that everyone was now home for the summer from Hogwarts... if she had been unconscious for so long, why was she in the infirmary of Hogwarts instead of St. Mungos? Her head suddenly started to feel fuzzy, as she became dizzy. Hermione didn't protest once Madame Pomfrey pushed her back onto her hospital bed.
"Now, Miss Granger, I know that it might be a bit of a shock, but I insist that you don't do that again! You were hit by an unusual spell, and I'm not sure just what it might be doing to you, if anything! Now if you'd just calm down... I'll-"
"No, Madame Pomfrey... I think that perhaps I should tell her, if I do say so myself. You wouldn't mind much, would you?"
Madame Pomfrey scowled at the Hogwarts headmaster, Professor Dumbledore.
"After all, there are other matters that you have to attend to, is there not?"
"Well, s'long as you don't upset her too much..." Hermione was made uncomfortable as the healer sent a worried look her way. It was a look that gave Hermione the impression that she was a mad mental patient that had to be looked after twenty-four hours a day.
Once Madame Pomfrey left, Professor Dumbledore turned to Hermione. Immediately she asked what was most on her mind.
"What happened, sir? Is... are all of the students in the school alright? What happened that night, in the Common Room, are Harry and Ron alright--"
"I am saddened when I think about it, but no, not all of the students of Hogwarts were able to escape fatalities that night." Hermione gasped and her eyes started to water again. "I imagine, that as Head Girl, you feel that some of this may be your fault... but it isn't. What happened that night hasn't been determined yet... as Mr. Potter is still in a coma."
Harry. In a coma. Students having been hurt. The fact that no one knew exactly what happened that night... Hermione was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by what happened...
"As for Mr. Weasley... Miss Granger, I am so sorry, but he was not able to make it. However, he did not suffer... he was hit by the Killing Curse. As well as his sister, Ginny, and Ms. Brown and Ms. Patil... many others were either wounded or killed, from all houses... it couldn't be stopped until Mr. Potter finally managed to do something that killed Voldemort."
Everything, all of this information that Professor Dumbledore was telling Hermione, was too much. She passed out.
(Wake me up) Wake me up inside
(I can't wake up) Wake me up inside
(Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up) Before I come undone
(Save me) Save me from the nothing I've become
He was stuck in a black void, watching as two hundred years passed. Yes- this might seem impossible, and he didn't know how it happened, but generation after generation was born and then died, only to have their children go on living their lives... Life never ceased to exist.
Harry had not one clue as what to make of this entire thing.
He didn't remember much. Didn't know how he got to this... void. Blank. Unmoving. No life existed within it. It was lonely. Cold.
Well, Harry thought, he wouldn't be telling the truth if he told himself that he didn't remember anything. All that he remembered was that Voldemort had attacked Hogwarts, coming after him. And that was... was after Ron was hit by the Killing Curse and that Hermione was knocked out by some weird spell...
The coldness within the void clutched at Harry's heart. That... that couldn't have happened. Even if he had been lured out of the Gryffindor Common room after spells had been thrown at his friends, he hadn't really been able to check on them, so that mean that Ron could still be alive, right? And Hermione... Harry knew that she wasn't hit by the Killing Curse...
But what if the spell that she was hit with wasn't strong enough to knock her out, and she went on fighting, and then was hit with it? What if Harry's eyes hadn't deceived him, and Ron really had been killed? Oh... Harry wished that someone would pull him out of this void. He didn't know where he was, and he didn't like it...
The years just kept on passing and passing.
Now that I know what I'm without
You can't just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring me to life
A few hours had passed.
Hermione was still in shock. Sure, she had grieved for the loss of those that had been killed, and she felt like a piece of her was missing now that Ron was gone... It was always Ron, Harry, and herself. Always. Hermione wasn't ready to accept that he was dead...
Now she was sitting in front of Harry, near his hospital bed. She hadn't left it actually, since that morning when she had woken up. Everyone tried to get her to leave him, mainly because her parents wanted to know that their only daughter was alright. But, even when they had come into the hospital wing to see if she was alright, Hermione had stayed firmly by Harry's side...
"There's a chance that Harry might never come out of the coma."
That was one of the reasons that she was staying glued to his bedside. She was holding one of his hands, caressing it absentmindedly, willing him to come out of his coma...
That was the only thing that Hermione knew to do.
He had defeated Voldemort... how, no one knew, but that wasn't what mattered to Hermione. What mattered was... that... at least Harry was still alive. She wanted him so bad to come out of his coma... so bad, in fact, that she started to... will him, call to him silently, hoping to get him to come out of it.
(Wake me up) Wake me up inside
(I can't wake up) Wake me up inside
(Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up) Before I come undone
(Save me) Save me from the nothing I've become
Something was calling to Harry, but he couldn't make out what it was. Willing him to wake up...
But what was it? Who was it, if it wasn't something? He guessed that he was dreaming... but this dream that he was stuck in was a dreamless, lifeless void. Another hundred years passed.
Harry still heard whatever it was that was calling him, but he didn't know how to answer it. But oh... did he want to leave this void... something about it didn't seem... natural. Throughout the entire time he had been here, he only had one person on his mind... the person that seemed to worry him the most, that he knew he wouldn't be able to live without some sort of her influence in his life.
Harry didn't know who's lives it was that he was watching. Everything went by so quickly...
Bring me to life
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside
Bring me to life
Frozen inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
Only you are the life among the dead
Hermione didn't know what time it was. No matter what anyone did, they couldn't get her to leave Harry's side. It had been a few days... She was starting to wonder if he'd ever wake up.
"Oh, Harry... I wish that you would..." she whispered to herself, shifting in her seat, her entire body numb from sitting there for so long. She scooted her seat over to the side a little, so that she could reach his face, and ran her hand over his face gently. "I really wish that you would..."
All of this time, I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me
I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything
Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don't let me die here
There must be something more
Bring me to life
Time stopped.
Harry was even more confused then before. A thousand years had passed, and then it just suddenly stopped.
"Oh, Harry... I wish that you would... I really wish that you would..."
Hermione's voice. That's what seemed to stop the time. He found that he was standing face to face with her, but wasn't able to touch her, talk to her, or anything. Something was pulling him to her however, and he couldn't help but go to it....
(Wake me up) Wake me up inside
(I can't wake up) Wake me up inside
(Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) Bid my blood to run
(I can't wake up) Before I come undone
(Save me) Save me from the nothing I've become
It had been at least two more days until Hermione felt the strangest thing, something brushing against the scalp of her head... running through her hair. She suddenly realized where she was, in the hospital wing in Hogwarts, next to Harry's bed, because she had been so worried that he would never come out of his coma.
Many other had tried to get into the hospital wing, from the remaining Weasleys, to Hermione's parents, to those damn Daily Prophet reporters. Of course, Dumbledore and Pomfrey, knowing that the reporters only wanted to see the unconscious savior of the wizarding world in his worse state right at the moment, refused them entrance. Madame Pomfrey simply said to the Weasleys and Hermione's parents to just let her have time alone with Harry... it was almost as if they knew that if anything would bring Harry out of his coma, it was the knowledge that he knew that Hermione was there for him and that she needed him....
"H-Harry?" She asked, meekly, not knowing if he was really up or not. It could very well be a dream... Hermione didn't know if she could tell the difference between reality and what was not. For all she knew, she could have been stuck in a dream... and that would be just her luck.
She looked up at him, and saw that he was smiling slightly at her. He had another scar, on the side of his left cheek... one that probably resulted, once again, from the battle with Voldemort. Hermione shuddered slightly. She never wanted to think about what horrors that selfish, egotistical, self-absorbed wizard had inflicted upon their world.
"Yeah... I'm okay..." Harry took in a deep breath, and she turned her head towards him, her head still laying in his lap...
His lap?! She sat up straight in her chair that she'd stayed in over night, blushing furiously, knowing that her head hadn't been bloody laying there last night! Harry was looking at her in amusement.
Wanker.
"I-... um..." Oh, who was she fooling, she couldn't be embarrassed over something so silly. She jumped up from her chair and dashed into the bed, sitting on the side of it, and throwing her arms around Harry. The tears were starting to come again, but she didn't care. "I'm so glad that you're okay! They thought that you might never come out of your coma!"
"Whoa! Hermione! I'm still healing from whatever spell it was that Voldemort threw at me! Ouch!" He yelped, when she just squeezed him tight in a hug. He was just complaining. Harry really didn't mind that she was hugging him this way... he didn't know much of what was going on, but he didn't really mind that she was hugging him this way... He knew that she was crying, and he held her back, sort of.. er, rubbing her back.
Harry really hated emotional females...
"Hey, 'Mione, what's wrong?" he asked as she pulled back, furiously wiping at her tears, but not able to stop them.
"O-Oh! It's awful! I thought that you were never going to wake up, and what with Ron and Ginny having been killed, it would have been like I lost some of the most important people in my life-- no, it wouldn't have been like, I did! Oh, Ginny was such a good friend... but Ron was like a brother, and you, well, I would have been lost because I--" She suddenly froze, realizing that she almost said the one thing that she had vowed that she would never tell Harry. He seemed to have not heard that part though... Harry had gone rigid when Hermione said that Ron and Ginny died.
"R-Ron is dead? And Ginny?" Harry found that it was utterly impossible to talk, to say anything else. No wonder that she was crying... he felt a lone tear prickling in the corner of his eyes.
She only nodded, sobbing. "Y-yes.... and Pavarti, and L-L-Lavender..." She kept wiping furiously at her tears. Something clenched in Harry's heart, making it throb painfully, he had wanted to make sure that no one would get hurt, ever again, after Sirius died... they had taken as many precautions as possible. He'd trained, learning multiple ways of combat, muggle, elven, wizard...
But that still hadn't been enough to save Ginny and Ron. Ron had been like a brother to Harry, too... his best mate. They were all going to go and get a flat in Muggle London, Harry, Ron, and Hermione.... they had had so many plans... Ginny had been planning on working with Fred and George over the summer in their joke shop...
It pained Harry that Pavarti and Lavender had died also, but quite frankly, he could care less about the both of them... he felt awful that he couldn't feel differently, but it was how he felt...
"H-Harry?" Hermione asked, a few minutes later, because she hadn't received any sort of answer from him. He just sort of... drifted off for a moment. Her sobs had calmed down, but tears were still running down her face.
"H-...how could I have let them die? Why didn't I defeat Voldemort sooner...?"
"Harry! Don't blame yourself! There was nothing that you could have done! Let alone remember much of anything that happened..."
She was right. He didn't remember anything that happened. That's when it suddenly occurred to him.
"How long has it been since..."
Hermione took a deep breath. "Three weeks."
Harry's chest clenched together painfully. "Three weeks... that means..."
"We've missed a lot."
"...Graduation, Ron and-- Oof!"
Harry suddenly found himself being hugged by Hermione again, but for what reason, he didn't know. She quickly pulled back again and lightly kissed him on his forehead, right on his scar...
"I'm just glad that you're okay..."
They were quiet for a while. They didn't know how it happened, but they soon ended up laying the same direction on the bed, Harry holding Hermione in his arms. They both sobbed, grieving over their lost friends... their lost time, everything. But suddenly something occurred to Harry...
"It seemed like a thousand years passed, while I was unconscious..."
Their tears had long since disappeared, as they had no more to shed. Hermione looked up at Harry, questionably. "A thousand years? What did you see?"
"Lots of stuff... mainly the many generations to come after us..."
"Really? Like... who?"
Harry suddenly laughed. He couldn't believe that he remembered this bit... "Er... well, one part had us old and gray... it was only the first couple years, and there was two younger people... looked just like us... I think they were our kids. The girl looked just like you, bushy hair and all... she even had lots of books surrounding her."
Hermione laughed quietly. "Seems like something that would happen, if I have a daughter one day..." Yes, but I don't think that is going to be any time soon... s'long as I don't confess my bloody feelings for you, Harry. "Is there anything else about it? About our future, that you might have seen?"
"No... er, it was just flashes and glimpses of things, that's the only part that I remember the most... But, well, I don't think it really meant anything..."
Hermione smiled slightly, taking his hand in hers. "Probably not."
"But.. the weirdest thing, I think, is that everything just suddenly stopped passing by at a thousand years... it seemed like forever that everything passed, and I felt like I was trapped in a black void... Suddenly I heard your voice, calling me back."
Hermione stiffened slightly. She had said quite a bit more, not just pleading with him to come back to her. She'd actually confessed that she loved him. She knew that they said that even if someone was in a coma, that they would be able to hear you, even if they couldn't answer you. She hoped that he didn't remember anything that she said...
"I don't know what it was, but it sounded like your voice. Just kept calling me... I even think I heard something else, but it must've been my imagination."
They stayed quiet for a few more minutes after that. And Hermione found herself being very surprised after those few minutes, because Harry kissed her.
Yes, he remembered everything she had said to him while he had still been in his coma.
In the very far corner of the hospital wing near Madame Pomfrey's office, two people stood there watching the teenagers. One was clucking disapprovingly, wanting to go and check on her patient. She was being held in place, however, by a sneaky spell that the Headmaster of Hogwarts had cast on her.
"Poppy, please, just let them be." Albus Dumbledore whispered quietly, narrowing his eyes, looking at her through his half-mooned spectacles. "You know as well as I do that the spell that was cast on Harry is a rather nasty one indeed, that traps it's victim into a void, trying to cause them to go insane, making many years go by, while it actually doesn't, keeping them in a coma..."
"Yes! Well!" She whispered vehemently. She clucked again, much like a chicken. "You know as well as I do, Professor, that don't know what sort of other side effects that the spell might have on Mister Potter! And I really wish that you would take this ridiculous spell off of me..."
"Actually, it's not a spell." Albus' eyes twinkled mischievously. "It's actually a joke that the Weasley twins came up with, to keep meddling people out of other's business."
"I don't meddle!" She scowled. "I merely-"
"Just let them be, for now, Poppy." And Albus turned the other way, leaving her there for the time being.
Harry and Hermione just needed time to themselves. And the Headmaster of Hogwarts was very determined to give his former students that opportunity.
