Sunglasses in the Rain
1. Chapter 1
A/N: The plot bunny that would NOT die!! This ridiculous idea came out of nowhere and to be honest, I have no idea why I wrote it.
Hope you enjoy it though, and please feed my ego and review =P
The characters maybe a bit OOC, because I'm not sure how Ron would react in such a situation, and I don't know Luna's character that well. : /
Luna Lovegood wears sunglasses in the rain. Not just ordinary sunglasses either, Ron noticed. Big cats eyed glasses covered in orange and silver sequins.
Ron watched her from the windows in the Great Hall as she twirled and danced in the thunderstorm. He stood there mesmerized watching her blonde hair, darkened from the rain, spin and slap her gently on her face when she stopped and spun the other way.
`Why isn't she at the feast?' Ron thought. He himself was just on his way back from the loo to return to the Halloween feast when he glanced out the window and saw Luna prancing through the puddles. For some reason he couldn't bring himself to look away from the girl even though his stomach growled in disagreement.
Suddenly, Luna stopped her twirling and slowly turned to face the window that Ron was watching her from. He saw her ridiculous staring at him, and with a small grin, Luna beckoned Ron to join her. Startled by her invitation, Ron just stood there until her beckons became more persistent. For a wild moment, Ron actually considered joining her but his mind kicked in and her tore himself from the window and continued his way back to the feast.
He stopped at the oak entrance doors. `Why not?' a small voice echoed in the back of his mind. His hand slowly reached for the brass handle and he pulled the door open. His face was instantly misted from the pounding rain falling just a few feet away. His first three helpings to the feast must have slowed his mind because he was soon drenched as he walked out of the castle and on his way to the courtyard. He drew his arms tightly around him and shivered as the frigid rain splattered against him.
As he drew nearer to Luna, Ron noticed that with her outfit, her wild glasses didn't look out of place at all. She was wearing orange and black striped pants and an orange, black and purple shirt under her Hogwarts robes, which she decorated with felt pumpkins and bats.
“Hello Ronald,” she greeted mysteriously.
“What are you doing?” Ron blurted out blinking the rain away from his eyes.
“What do you mean?” she asked finally stopping her weird dance and faced him.
“Why aren't you at the feast?” Ron asked staring into the large black lenses of her glasses.
“I'm not hungry,” she replied.
“Well why are you out in the rain? You'll catch a cold,” Ron scolded. Inwardly he cursed himself for hanging around with Hermione too much. Luna let out a small giggle.
“Thanks for your concern, but I think I'll be alright. Would you like to dance with me?” Luna asked.
“Er- no. Thanks,” Ron muttered awkwardly. “Luna, why are you wearing those sunglasses?” Luna didn't respond. She just tilted her head back and stared at the cloudy sky. Drops of rain bounced off her glasses, flying in all directions.
“Luna?” Ron asked louder above the rain. Luna let her head drop forward again but she still didn't give an answer; she just gave a mysterious and somewhat sad smile. Getting annoyed, Ron reached forward and pulled the glasses off her face. He grimaced as he studied her now exposed face. Her eyes were red and puffy and they were swimming in tears. Ron watched silently as two fresh tears gently rolled out of her eyes and mixed with the rain on her face.
“Wha-?” Before Ron could finish, Luna snatched her glasses back and hastily put them back on. She turned her back to Ron and began to slowly swish and sway with the rain.
“Why are you crying?” Ron muttered awkwardly. He hated being near crying women; whenever his mum or Ginny got emotional, he was out of the house so fast you could swear that he was on a Firebolt.
“I'm not,” Luna replied flatly and turned her back to him.
“W-What's wrong?” Ron made a reach to turn her around, but thought better of it and ran his hand through his drenched mop of hair. Once again, he didn't get a reply and for several minutes the and only sound was the pouring rain and the occasional distant rumble of thunder.
Sighing heavily, Ron asked himself why he had even though about coming out here in the first place. “Fine,” he muttered. “I'm going back inside. I suggest you do the same.” He turned on his heel, sending drops of water flying off his hair and began to plow through the puddles.
He didn't get far before he heard Luna's small voice call after him.
“She died on Halloween,” she whispered her voice filled with sorrow. Ron slowly spun around.
“What?” he replied slowly walking back to her. “Who died?”
“My mother,” Luna answered her voice slowly regaining her usual mysterious tone. Ron's mouth opened slightly trying to find something to say.
“I-I'm sorry,” he muttered finally. Luna turned around and put on a small grin.
“Thank you Ronald,” she said sincerely. “It's okay though. I just like being outside on Halloween; Mother was always outdoors, or in her lab. Every Halloween we would go outside and dress the pumpkins, and she always wore a long, silver moon necklace. She only wore it on Halloween, and every year she would say that when I was older she would give it to me; but when the accident happened, t-the necklace went with her.” Luna's voice wavered a little and bent her head. Ron stared at her feeling trapped; he had no idea how to deal with this, but he felt that he needed to do something.
He walked gradually over to Luna and did the only thing he could to comfort the girl- pull her into a hug. Luna jump slightly when Ron uneasily embraced her, and she stood there lankly for a moment before wrapping her arms around him tightly.
“Thank you Ronald,” she breathed in his ear.
“Y-your welcome Luna.”
When Luna pulled away, she gave Ron a sincere smile. “I think I'll go inside now Ronald.” She grasped his tightly and guided him through the rain and back into the castle.
The two of them walked into the Great Hall together and Ron felt himself blush furiously as several students eyed them. Just before she parted to the Ravenclaw table, Luna turned to Ron and whispered a thank you.
“What did you fall in the toilet Ron?” Hermione asked eyeing Ron as he sat down.
“I just stepped outside for a bit of air,” Ron mumbled as his ears turned pink. He sat in silence for a while remembering what had just happened between himself and Luna just moments before. He never knew she had lost her mother and he admired her maturity for handling it so well. He felt that he owed her something; he had guessed that not a lot of people knew about her mothers unfortunate accident and he was glad that's she shared that with him.
“Hey Harry?” Ron asked finally. “Can I borrow your invisibility cloak and The Marauder's Map tonight?”
“Er- sure Ron. Why?” Harry asked.
“I just have something to take care of.”
The next morning at breakfast, Luna sat down to a surprise. Sitting in front of her was a pure white box with a card attached. Noticing her name scrawled untidily on it, she gingerly opened the note.
“To Luna:
Happy Halloween,
-Ron”
It was simple, but it filled Luna's heart with glee and she tore open the box happily. She gave a small gasp as the silver necklace gleamed in front of her. She took it out of the box in silent awe and gently poked the delicate moon charm that hung from the chain. She clasped the necklace around her neck and sighed happily.
Later on that day, when she cornered Ron in the hall, she would give him a big kiss on the cheek and her orange and silver sunglasses.
