27. Chapter Twenty Seven

Disclaimer- I do formally disclaim that I am JK Rowling, I did not originally think Harry up ( dammit!) And therefor own no rights when it applies to him.

Chapter 27- Fight Night

The eleventh of June, which started as a seemingly normal day, felt not quite so to Harry... all morning he had an ominous feeling surrounding him. He could feel it creeping up his spine like a icy finger trailing up towards his neck. Harry felt an almost desperate need to have everything done and settled, spend time with important people and be prepared.

Had Harry stopped to think about it, he would have clearly remembered that he was a Seer and might have paid more attention to the feeling. Harry, however, although he practiced his skills quite often, often dismissed the whole premonition aspect of being a Seer. As it was he did not think of this and just conducted his day somewhat normally , with this odd sense of foreboding hanging about him.

He spent time with his family, Rowen and the baby. He spent a few hours flying for fun with Ron, although what Ron meant by fun was really training in disguise for the Ravenclaw match. Harry even closeted himself away with Hermione in the afternoon for a picnic. They relaxed in each other's company, both stressed due to the upcoming end of year exams. Well, Hermione more so than Harry, obviously. Harry treasured every moment he had with Hermione, as there was always the lingering thought that it might be his last.

Harry and Hermione had just arrived back from their picnic, when Lupin approached glaring at Harry. Harry's face colored with guilt, as he was supposed to be in the room of requirement that morning for their usual lessons.

“ Sorry Lupin. I just needed... time you know?” Harry apologized softly. Lupin's face softened in understanding.

“ I know it's overwhelming at times Harry. All you needed to do was ask, I would have given you the morning off. Now you need to work extra hard this afternoon.” Lupin ended sternly. Harry nodded and turned, giving Hermione a kiss goodbye, before following Lupin to the third floor.

After a few hours of training, Lupin finally allowed Harry to go down for dinner. As Harry approached the Great Hall, he felt an intense need to turn and run. He shook the feeling off, and took his seat next to Hermione at the Gryiffindor table. Ron, who was seated across from them, was shoveling food into his face at the speed of light as Hermione looked on in fascinated disgust. Harry noted that all the teachers were at the Head table, including Rowen and Snape. The house elf Winky had been assigned to help Rowen with baby Ria. Winky had taken to the baby immensely, and snapped out of her depression and drinking. Winky now fully considered herself the Snape's elf and was much happier for having a family to serve once more.

Harry had filled his plate and began to eat when he noticed how stressed the Headmaster seemed. He pointed this out, quietly to Hermione who shrugged, and indicated she had no idea if anything new had happened. Harry's fears were confirmed 30 minutes later, when Kingsley Shacklebolt burst into the Great Hall, and rushed directly towards the staff table. He leaned down and had a hurried conversation with Dumbledore.

Dumbledore stood, causing the Hall to go quiet. He looked over the rims of his half moon glasses seriously. “ Would Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley please go to the anti chamber behind me. I have an announcement to make...” Harry didn't hear the rest as he, Ron and Hermione had gotten up and stepped through Violet's portrait hole at the back of the Great Hall.

A few moments latter, Rowen , Snape and Lupin stepped through the portrait hole with grave expressions. Harry felt a frisson of fear skitter down his spine. He knew, he just knew that it was finally happening. Rowen took a deep breath before speaking quietly.

“ Voldemort and his army have attacked Hogsmeade. The battle started an hour ago, they are moving towards the castle. Hogsmeade is almost leveled.” Hermione gasped at this information. Rowen continued, not pausing. “The Aurors arrived almost at once, and the Order will be joining them in full shortly. Harry: you, Ron and Hermione will go down to the gates with us. The castle will be locked down with the rest of the students inside. It's the safest place for them.” Rowen pause here, and Snape stepped in smoothly.

“ Harry here , I want you to take this.” Snape pressed a flask into Harry's hands as he spoke. “ It contains Strengthening Potion, enough for a few applications. Keep it with you at all times.” Harry accepted the potion gratefully, taking a swig right then and there. Rowen led them outside and they began walking towards the Gate. Harry could see the smoke rising from what he assumed to be the remains of Hogsmeade village.

“ Voldemort has a rather large army, Harry” Lupin had come up alongside Harry. “ He has the Dementors , of course, and the trolls and a fair few giants as well. And of course, his Deatheaters are with him. Dumbledore will be joining us along with the other teachers as soon as the castle is locked. Hagrid headed down as soon as he heard.” Lupin spoke in a grave voice, and Harry felt the seriousness of the situation pressing down upon him. He felt Hermione's hand squeeze his tightly, and although he found this comforting, it did nothing to ease the sick sense of anticipation at the pit of Harry's stomach.

The group arrived at the front gates, and through all the magical charms and protections, could hear the sounds of distant fighting. But nothing could have prepared Harry for the sights that greeted him when they were flung open. There was magical melee going on just outside the gate. Harry had a difficult time distinguishing who was on what side. It was pandemonium as spells were being shot out, and there were voices yelling out words that were indistinguishable in the din. Harry raised his wand, along with the others and strode towards the Hogsmeade road.

They first clashed with a group of trolls, who were swinging their clubs around with great abandon, and not much care as to who they hit, enemy or ally. Harry could faintly hear the spells of the others, a 'Wingardium Leviosa' and a few 'Stupefy's. Harry made his way through the fray, worry for the others safety in the back of his mind as he cast spell after spell towards the known and unknown enemy.

As Harry fought, he was barely aware of anyone or anything around him. He felt the adrenaline pumping through his veins as he worked his way through the masses. Harry tried very hard not to use too many of his new powers, as he wanted an element of surprise when he faced Voldemort. He was dimly aware of Dumbledore arriving and dispatching the giants in a quick manner. The air in the field seemed to crackle with magic.

“I'll get yer for tha!” Harry heard Hagrid bellowing at a Deatheater whom Hagrid was grappling with. Hagrid hit the man, whom Harry recognized as McNair, the former Ministry executioner, with enough force to send him into a tree.

Hagrid had failed to see the Deatheater creeping up behind him. “Filthy half breed.” the Deatheater muttered. Hagrid began to turn, but it was too late. Harry watched, horrified, as the Deatheater yelled “Avada Kedavra!” and a jet of green light hit Hagrid square in the chest.

“ HAGGER NO!” came a loud voice from the edge of the woods. In three strides, Hagrid's little brother Grawp came into the clearing, swinging at the Deatheater with a massive fist, killing him instantly. Grawp picked up Hagrid's still body, as Dementors crowded in, sensing the giant's pain.

Harry immediately ran ahead casting ' Expecto Patronum' as he ran. A great silver stag burst forth from the tip of his wand and charged the Dementors. Harry saw that Grawp was shaking as great sobs wracked his body.

“HAGGER!!!!” Grawp was crying over and over again. Harry's eyes began to fill as he watched Grawp cradle Hagrid's body. Harry's attention was jerked away however by Hermione's voice casting 'Stupefy' behind him. She had hit Avery, a Deatheater, who had gotten behind him.

“ Harry there's no time!” Hermione shouted at him, her words rushed. Harry shot one last look over his shoulder at Grawp before nodding to Hermione and then plunging back into the midst of battle.

Harry couldn't have honestly said how much time had passed , as he fought relentlessly with Deatheaters and their allies. He felt as if the night would never end, and he was on his last legs all the time. The faces of his enemy no longer seemed individual to him, they had all blurred together to become dome nameless, faceless terror. Harry had long since lost track of his friends in the mass of confusion around him. He had just taken another swig of his Strengthening Potion , while casting the Unbreakable Shield charm to avoid any hexes, when he stopped, spotting across the field the swish of black cloak and frighteningly familiar narrow red eyes. Voldemort.

Harry headed in his direction only to be stopped by two cloaked Deatheaters. They removed their hoods, and Harry recognized Lucius Malfoy and his son Draco. Harry briefly wondered at the fact that he had not heard of the breakout of Azkaban, but he was not at all surprised to see Lucius' face.

“ Time for me to finish what I started in Hogsmeade, Potter!” Malfoy cried, sneering at Harry. “ Only no fooling around this time! Avada Kada-” Harry did not wait for Malfoy to finish before dropping to the ground, rolling behind a boulder. A jet of green streamed by. Harry could hear Lucius sneering at his son's inability to cast a simple Killing curse. While he was distracted, Harry stuck his wand out shouting 'Adduco Letum'. It was the first time in battle Harry had cast the new killing curse, and he felt sick as he did so. He heard a body thud to the ground and an anguished cry.

“Father! No!” Malfoy's face seemed to sharpen as he stared at his father's lifeless form. He whirled around casting ' Petrificus Totalus' as he turned. Harry who had looked around the rock to see who he had hit, was caught completely by surprise. His body stiffened and he fell over as the hex hit him. Malfoy was leering over him.

“ Let's see how brave you are now Potter! You killed my father, and now it's your turn to die! Let's hope you little Mudblood can get along without you!” Malfoy pointed his wand directly at Harry's chest. His eyes had an almost inhuman gleam in them. “ Avada Kedav-” Malfoy's voice was cut off by a green light hitting him from behind. Harry watched fearfully as Malfoy's face went slack and his body hit the ground with a dull thud. Harry, now freed from Malfoy's spell, scrambled up. He looked beyond Malfoy and saw the grave face of Severus Snape. Harry stared at him a moment, realizing what it must have done to him to kill a former student. Harry nodded at Snape, before turning and continuing in the direction he had seen Voldemort heading.

Harry eventually came upon a small clearing off to the side of the road, where Voldemort was standing, Wormtail at his side. Harry saw the flash of silver in the night as the moon glinted off of Wormtail's hand. Harry charged into the clearing, fixated upon finishing this for once and for all, when Voldemort smiled evilly.

“ Ah, Potter. Took you long enough. Come to finish it have you? Well, how... noble of you. Perhaps you might reconsider your gung ho attitude however when you see that I have something of yours.” Voldemort spoke in a high cold sneer, as he stepped aside, revealing someone behind him, with Wormtail's wand tip to her forehead.

“ Hermione...”
