All I Want for Christmas
14. Friends and Parents May Know Best
A/N: This is my first attempt to write fan fiction of any sort. Plus, I don't have the knowledge that most of you do about Harry Potter, as I've only read fan fiction and seen the movies. I've tried to be as true to the series as I can considering my knowledge, but the story may be slightly AU. Please be constructively critical of my work. Thanks in advance for your kindness. Maybe I'll write more of these in the future if this one goes well.
Thanks to everybody who has reviewed my story thus far. I really appreciate everybody's feedback. It will help me become a better writer, which hopefully will in turn increase your enjoyment of my work.
At the suggestion of one of my reviewers, I'm going to ask people to include their guesses as to when Harry and Hermione are going to get engaged in their reviews. I look forward to reading your guesses. I will say that I will not comment on them, so as to keep you all guessing.
If any of you want to try to figure out where I'm going, you might want to read my replies to people's reviews, as I will occasionally drop a hint in there. However, be wary, I have been known to toss out some red herrings too. Speculate at your own risk.
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters in this story. All characters belong to J. K. Rowling.
All I Want for Christmas
Chapter 14: Friends and Parents May Know Best
Hermione slowly opened the letter from Ginny with trembling fingers. Why am I so nervous about what Ginny has to say? It's not like I confessed to her that I love Harry or anything like that.
“Let's see what she has to say,” Hermione muttered softly to herself as she started to read.
Hermione,
You've got it bad girl! Your mum's right…you DO love Harry.
Don't worry about me. You're right, I don't fancy him anymore. I know that we'll never be more than friends again, and he's a great friend, so I wouldn't risk throwing that away anyway.
Do you know what his favorite thing to do while I was dating him was? It wasn't snogging. It was watching you!
Harry fancies you too. Have no fear of that. He probably doesn't want to say anything because of your history with Ron. You know Harry; he wouldn't want to wreck things with Ron, though Harry should know that he wouldn't since Ron's with Luna now. Mum and the rest of the family absolutely adore her!
What you said to Harry about him and Ron being like a father and son is something that you have to figure out on your own. All I can tell you is this: your heart holds all that you need to know if you'd just take the time to listen to it.
If Harry hasn't made a move on you by the time we get back to school, I'm going to have to have a word with him. You two deserve to be happy, and in the five and a half years that I've known both of you, I've realized that what makes you two the happiest is each other.
No, I haven't talked to Neville recently. I'm taking a break from boys right now.
Go get your man, Hermione!
Your friend,
Ginny
Hermione set the letter down on her bed chuckling to herself and shaking her head. Ginny's convinced I love Harry too. Why is it that the only people that aren't convinced that Harry and I are in love are the two of us?
Are you so sure about that? the all-too-familiar voice came from inside her head.
What do you mean by that?
I mean that maybe Harry's realized that you two belong together too, the voice in her head speculated.
What makes you think he has?
You noticed that the smile he had on his face when he handed you the letter from Ginny was one you hadn't seen before. He's been acting strangely all day. I think that he may have figured out that the two of you belong together last night, the voice speculated.
I think you're mad, but that's not an impossible theory.
Who's the mad one? You're talking to me, the voice countered
Ginny wasn't much help.
Wasn't she? She told you that you and Harry love each other, and that she's willing to help bring the two of you together if he hasn't made a move by the time you two get back to school, the voice offered.
True. I'm beginning to suspect that my parents are trying to bring the two of us together too.
Parents know best, don't they? the voice inquired.
If they haven't gone completely mad.
Are you saying that your's are mad? the voice demanded.
Well…maybe they're not as mad as I thought earlier…
Hermione's argument with the voice in her head was interrupted again by a knock on her door. “Who is it?” she called out.
“It's time to go,” Mr. Granger informed her from the other side of the door.
“I'll be right down,” Hermione told him.
I'll finish this discussion with you later, Hermione told the voice in her head.
Hermione made her way down stairs and out to the emerald green Chevy Lumina in the driveway. She climbed into the backseat next to Harry, who smiled at her shyly as she climbed in and buckled up.
Maybe the voice in my head was on to something…
The car backed out of the driveway and headed towards a destination that neither Hermione nor Harry knew.
A/N: Again, sorry for the shorter than usual chapter, but I felt this chapter needed to be separate from the last one because of the difference in POV. Hopefully the next chapter will make up for the shortness of these last two chapters. As I said at the end of the last chapter, this chapter takes place in a short amount of time, which helps account for its brevity. Yes, we are approaching the end of the story, but we obviously need something important to happen before that point. ;-)
