Chapter 3: Who Knows Best
“Could I ask you guys something?” Serena, who was Gilbert’s wife and had arrived later that week with their two children and a young girl by the name of Rebecca to babysit.
The girls of the house (except Lily) were standing in the kitchen, lounging when the men were in the other room, “bonding”. If you could really call fawning over Quidditch bonding while they were yelling over if it was fair for the Bludger to come flying out of no where.
They looked at each other and then back at Serena. “Sure,” was the answer in unison.
“Do you find the men of the Potter family.....sensual?” she asked with an uneasy feeling. They looked at one another.
“Yeah, totally, of course, isn’t it obvious?” was what went around in a jumble.
Serena sighed and turned around to fix the fruit that she rested in the trophy. She thought it looked to ordinary and needed a bit of color and charisma. But before she could continue, Gilbert had found himself walking in and gazing at what she was doing.
“Serena? What do you think you’re doing? That’s the trophy,” he scolded.
“I thought it could use a little of decoration.” she replied with a loud voice.
“Trophies are meant to be won. Not put the fruit in,” he took the fruit out of the trophy and set it down. “It’s a trophy, Serena.” With that he walked out.
She frowned and huffed. Her husband had been such an arse the past few weeks. All she wanted was a little alone time and for him to just cuddle with her and maybe something else under the covers.
But he had been such a bother with trying to with the stupid Potter Cup that he had no time for her now. He was trying to “strategize” his way around to win.
“Snookums,” Ginny whined. She was in the guestroom with Harry in the bathroom. “I’m bored! Come in here so we can finally pick out a pretty diamond!” She was dressed in a little nightie that she bought from the largest lingerie store nearby and she hoped this would be a night he would do something. For once.
Harry yawned and ran his hand through his hair. He had been beaten and pulverized by his brother all evening and all he wanted to do was lie his head down on the pillow and sleep.
But that dream was a fantasy once he entered the bedroom and found Ginny on the bed, looking vulnerable and needy. He left that unnoticed and slid into bed, pulling the covers up to his chest. “Night Ginny,” he smiled, pecking her on the lips and turning on his side, immediately falling asleep.
Ginny huffed and shoved him hard which ended him up on the ground. He yelped and struggled to his knees.
“Godric, Ginny. What was that for?” he frowned, slowly standing up and rubbing his lower back side.
“You’re so not romantic. But besides that, you need to help pick out the diamond. After all you’re the one that’s giving it to me,” she told him.
A look of fear came across Harry’s face. He had never intended to marry Ginny. Even after spending a few days with her, it seemed strange. But maybe it was just him.
“Ginny, I’m tired. We’ll do it some other time. For now just let me sleep,” he sighed, giving her a long kiss that he hoped would earn him some sleep through the night.
She pouted and gave a giggle. “Fine Harry. You should rest up for the next round. I’ll be rooting more than ever now that you’ve won the first one,” she grinned. He gave a weak smile and cuddled into the bed, falling asleep immediately.
Ginny lay awake, playing with the bag of diamonds in her hand. Harry had been so distant for the past few days and she wished he would be close to her. She had tried every way possible to get him to even make some notion of making love with her. She even came close to renting a porn.
What made it worse was that that stupid girl they had run into the other day. Herminnie or something like that. What a stupid name for someone was what she had originally thought. And still thought. Maybe it was because they were old friends. She didn’t mean that much to Harry from the way he never spoke one ounce of her through their relationship.
The next day Ginny had decided to go shopping at the mall for shoes. Something Harry didn’t want to spend the day doing. He told the family he would be around the time, visiting some of the old stores.
But that morning he had decided to wake up early, trying not to disturb Ginny as he got dressed in sweats. He had wanted to keep in shape for Quidditch and thought jogging would do him some good.
While he ran down the pathway near the neighborhood, he found someone running near. He smiled, seeing the familiar bushy hair which of course was of Hermione. He quickly and easily caught up, running beside her.
She turned to see him and stopped, panting and wiping her forehead. “Harry, I didn’t know you jogged,” she chuckled, taking out a water bottle and taking a large gulp. She offered him some which he gratefully accepted.
“I’ve always been jogging. How about you?” he grinned, pouring water on his face. She began to stretch a bit and yawned. “Pretty much since I moved back here. I reckon you’re just doing this to buff up for Quidditch, right?” she smirked.
“Ah, you know me. Sports buff. Hey, are you coming later today?” he asked, a little hope in his voice.
“You know I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I’ve been to every one of them for a while. I like being part of the Potter family. It’s nice. Since I haven’t really seen much of my family. It’s nice to have somewhat of one,” she explained, pulling off her jacket and tying it around her waist.
He tried to ignore the fact that her skin looked so soft and glistened from her sweat that gleamed in the sun. It was a beautiful color of tan and he wanted nothing but to run his hands down her arms.
Harry shook his head and found Hermione looking at him with an odd look. “Sorry. Have you had breakfast yet? I mean, you could come back to the house and have some with us,” he asked.
She bit her lip and sighed. She would love nothing more than to do that. Since she was a little girl she always thought she’d end up marrying a Potter. And she thought it would be Harry, but that was a forgotten dream. Besides that, Ginny had been claiming Harry like a cheetah protecting her cubs.
“I probably couldn’t make it. I have to open the shop in 15 minutes,” she made a lame excuse.
She had missed how deflated his facial expression had gotten. “All right, I’ll see you at 4 then, right?” he brightened at that. She gave him a smile and nodded. “I won’t miss it. See you,” she waved, before she started to jog in the other direction.
Harry watched her running and smiled. “See you,” but he know she couldn’t hear him. For some unknown reason, he couldn’t wait till that afternoon. And then he ran.
Through the Potter household, there were two people who were in their room. The man sleeping deeply. The woman walking into the room with a glass of water. She frowned and watched his breaths come out and go back in. She shook her head and nudged him. “James...”
He only moved a bit and then began snoring. She huffed and nudged him harder, earning a swat. “Well I never,” she pouted, shoving hard this time.
James woke from his sleep and looked around. “Oh..Lily...What is it?” he asked, rubbing the kip sleep from his eyes.
“Oh James, you’re no fun,” she sat there, her back to him. He raised an eyebrow and placed his glasses on.
“Lily, what’s wrong?” he crawled behind her and wrapped his arms over hers, lessening the grip.
She sighed. “You never want to...you know..be spontaneous in that way,” she hinted, hoping he would understand no matter how thick-headed he was.
He blinked. “That way? Whaddya mean Lils?” and yet he was. Lily leaned into him and sighed. “You know....have blankie time,” she hinted once again. He raised an eyebrow.
And realized it.
“Oh, Lily..,” he smiled, nuzzling his nose against the crook of her neck. “You know, I just got some more pills,” he cooed.
She smiled and giggled as he pulled her into bed. “Oh James....,” she swooned, earning a kiss from James.
“Okay guys. Today was Harry’s pick and it’s called, Who Knows Best. The objective of the game is to answer as many questions about the family as well as you can correctly. The one who answers the most, wins.” James said, standing in front of Harry, Gilbert, and Elizabeth.
Lily and Serena, who was keeping score sat between Hermione and Ginny.
“First question. Who at age 8 wet their pants in the middle of show and tell?”
“Me,” Harry answer easily. Gilbert snickered, even though he had not gotten that answer.
“Correct! Who fell into the barrel at the Farmer’s Market?”
“GILBERT!” Elizabeth shouted excitedly.
“Correct. Why did Elizabeth at come home that one night with chili on her dres?”
“Because her boyfriend spilled it on her when he was drunk.” Gilbert smirked. Elizabeth huffed. “I wanted to forget that you know.”
“Right. When they were five, who accidently caught themself in a log and rolled down the hill?”
“Harry,” Gilbert laughed loudly. Harry remained unfazed.
“Right. Who at birth had 12 toes?”
Harry, Gilbert, and Elizabeth stood confused. But Harry knew it was him.
“Okay, go ahead. Laugh at me. We all know it’s me,” he turned away, looking in the other direction.
“Actually, you’re wrong. Gilbert had 12 toes at birth,” James said honestly.
Everyone besides James and Lily looked at him. “Wh-Wait. What? How? Why didn’t you ever tell me?” Gilbert asked.
“We thought we’d wait till you were older...,” Lily told him, nodding.
Gilbert gaped at them. “I’m 33-years-old! Don’t you think I would have found out at some point? Like when I’m dead?” he said, running his hand through his hair.
“Okay, people! Are we going to continue or not? We’ll discuss this later.” Lily announced, motioning for James to continue.
“All right.”
Twenty minutes later, Elizabeth was in last place. And Gilbert along with Harry were tied.
“Next question. Who at the age of 10 ran around naked in front of the neighbors?” James asked.
“Harry,” Gilbert eyed him and smirked when James announced him as winner. Harry sighed and walked into the house.
This was not going to bring him down. He only lost this one. But Gilbert would be choosing the game tomorrow and he knew that he would choose a game that was hard for Harry.
Ginny ran in and pouted. “Oh Harry, you should have won that one!” she squeaked, throwing her arms around his waist. “How about we go into town and do a little shopping. I’ll even buy you a few things. Maybe a tux,” she grinned.
He shook his head. “Maybe later Ginny. I just wanna take a shower, okay?” she frowned a bit but brushed it aside. “Okay. I’ll be downtown anyways. I’ll pick up something for the family,” she blew him a kiss and disappeared.
Harry was about to go upstairs when the door opened. He turned around and saw Hermione standing there. “Oh. Hey,” he gave a smile.
She smiled back and pointed at the fridge. “Just passing through. You mum said I could get something to drink.”
“Kay.”
“Sorry about the loss though. You did really well,” she tried to cheer him up. He gave a dazzling smile and nodded.
“Thanks. I’m sure I’ll do better next time.”
“I’ll be cheering you on,” she winked, walking out.
Somehow that sounded much better when Hermione said it rather than Ginny.
