Chapter Eleven-Their Forms
The next day dragged on, with Charms first, where many were still working on their figurines, while Harry and Hermione had advanced to action figures and dolls. After that they had a disastrous Potions lesson where someone, had somehow melted a cauldron spilling a Burning Potion over the floor, causing the floor to melt as well as many other cauldrons. Harry and Hermione only just managed to escape a few minutes before the bell, with no burns. After a rushed lunch, Harry, Ron and Hermione headed down to advanced Care of Magical Creatures, where Hagrid seemed to be struggling with a crate full of some unknown things.
“Hey, Hagrid, so you're feeling better now?” asked Harry, concernedly.
“Hello, Arry, Ron, Ermione, yeah, I'm fine, how yeh's doin?” Hagrid said happily, welcoming them. They all peered cautiously into the crate, but Hagrid quickly slammed the lid down, grinning broadly. “Yeh don't wanna spoil the surprise!” Not many people had joined his class, only about nine, mostly comprised of Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs. When everyone had settled down, Hagrid began to explain what they would be doing that year.
“Now, this year, yeh will be workin' on a project for most of the year, which is in this `ere crate,” He patted the crate with his large hand, still grinning broadly, “Now, you's will have to be sorted into groups, perhaps of two or three, yeh, three. Yeh can sort them out your selves, after I show yeh what you'll be doin,” Hagrid lifted the lid of the crate and reached in. He drew his hand back out a minute later, carrying an egg. It was the size of an ostrich egg, with black spots covering the white shell.
“This `ere is a Pygmy Dragon egg, they were discovered early this year by an explorer and taken to the Ministry where they allowed me to teach them to yeh this year!” He was now stroking the egg, a fatherly expression on his face. There was a break out of muttering amongst the students, “Calm down, calm down. There will be four groups of three, have yeh made yeh groups yet?” there was some murmurings of yes, and shuffling of feet before he continued, “Ok yeh each will get one and care for it till it `atches then will raise the `ittle fello until he's big and strong. They on'y grow to be abou' this big,” He held up his hand to a point just above his knee, “Then Professor Dumbledore has a use for `em. Now when I call yeh name out come forward and pick a name out of the hat, then get the egg out of the crate, alright?” they all nodded, “Good, all good. Ok, Hannah Abbot!” She moved for ward and picked a piece of parchment out of the hat and went to the crate, Hagrid pointed out which egg it was. She reached in and pulled out a grey egg, then moved back with her friends. Terry Boot was next than Seamus, then Justin Flinch-Fletchley, Hermione scrambled up when it was her turn then came back happily, with a light blue egg secured in her hands. Neville clambered up and got a purple egg, Parvarti Patil went next and got a pink egg, when Harry's name was called, he strolled casually up. He stared at the bag in front of him, remembering the Triwizard Tournament when he pulled out the small figurine of a Dragon. He reached in and clasped his hands around a piece of parchment and pulled it out, it read:
Camouflaged Corpus
He gave it to Hagrid who gave off a confused look; he peered into the crate and found what he was looking for. He pointed to egg lying in a corner, hardly visible. Harry reached in and pulled it out. Large spots covered the shell, all different colors, some merging into others and creating new colors. Harry smiled happily up at Hagrid, who was gazing curiously down at Harry's egg. He took it back up to where Hermione and Ron were. They grinned when Harry joined them, looking intently at Harry's egg. Ron practically bolted up to get his egg, and came back a second later with a bright red one perched in his arms. Harry and Hermione laughed at the look on Ron's face.
“It had to be red didn't it!” After the lesson they made their way to their dormitories to place their eggs in a safe place. Hagrid had said that they should hatch in the next week, so they had to keep them safe until then. That day passed quickly and soon they all where piled inside the Room of Requirement ready for more Animagus training. They began with the usual circle work, all picturing transforming into some unknown animal, when it happened.
Harry's body began to heat, a tingling began at his finger tips and toes and made its way up his arms and legs, traveling over his chest to his heart. His hair stood on end, and his eyes were forced open. He tried to yell, but his mouth just opened and closed soundlessly. He gazed around at the others, totally unaware to what was happening, until he saw Hermione's hair begin to rise in the air, making it uncontrollably fizzy. Her eyes shot open, her mouth open and closed wordlessly. She began to gape at Harry, who now was struggling to stay on his feet. The others still stood, with their eyes clenched together in deep concentration. Hermione now was struggling as well to stand, but didn't succeed, she stumbled to the floor. All the eyes flew open of their friends, resting on Hermione's fallen form and Harry's struggling to stand. They gaped at them both, unable to speak or move. Harry couldn't move his body. His arms and legs were stiff and numb, tingling and heating. Ginny was by Hermione's side, trying to sit her up, but she was stiff as well, her eyes pelting over everyone's stunned faces. Her eyes rested on Harry. Her mouth opened in a silence gasp, her eyes grew wide.
A searing pain in Harry's fingertips began to travel up his arm as well as in his legs. They came to a stop on his chest. He gritted his teeth; the pain was unbearable, until it stopped. His body became free, he was able to move his arms and legs, but they continued to tingle. He tried to stand, finding himself on his hands and knees, finding it hard though since he didn't have any feet. He stared in mock horror at his PAWS, then up at his friends, who had similar expressions to Harry's. Harry gaped at Hermione who had a pained look in her eyes. He knew it was happening to her as well. He was about to walk but found himself with feet again, he closed his eyes and opened them once again. He had his own body back. He rushed over to Hermione, the others parting for him, too shocked to speak. He knelt down beside Hermione, who now was gritting her teeth shut. He stumbled backwards as she grew in size. Chestnut brown, bristly hair sprouted up over her body. Her face elongated, her hair, spreading down her back, keeping its color. He watched in surprise as she too tried to stand. All he could describe her as, was beautiful.
She stood fairly tall, with a chestnut brown coat and dark brown mane, the same color as her bushy hair. She was an elegant mare; her coat was shiny and glistened in the lights of the small room. She lifted her hoof to step but stumbled to the ground in the heap that was Hermione, back to her human form. Harry rushed forwards and knelt beside her. She lifted her head and gave of a small smile, Harry returned it.
“You were beautiful!” Harry said, his face heating up, Hermione's face turned pink, “Like-wise!” He laughed as he helped her up. They turned and faced their three friends; their faces broke into three identical grins.
“Wicked!” gasped Ron, “Brilliant!” grinned Ginny, “Wow!” said Luna, with no real excitement.
“What was I?” asked Hermione, looking back down at her body, “You were a horse, Mione, a chestnut brown one with a dark brown mane and tail, really stunning. What about me?” asked Harry excitedly, knowing one thing already, that he was something with paws. The look on their faces was one of awe.
“You're a wolf, a beautiful one at that……” Ginny began but was cut off by Ron, “Beautiful, more like brilliant, mate, you're………” “You're black with white specs and on your head……” Neville cut Ron off, followed by Luna, “And on your head is a lightning shaped white marking, making your appearance very bizarre.” Hermione was next, waiting patiently for the others to finish.” But the most extra ordinary thing was your eyes, I mean, I was all the way across the room going through my transformation and I could see them from here. They're the usual gold but with a difference, you can look into them and see everything, like your green ones, it was a beautiful sight.” She let out an impressed breath, causing Harry to smile embarrassedly at them. `I can't wait to see myself in a mirror' he thought excitedly.
`So', he thought, `I'm a black wolf, but it doesn't makes sense, since I'm the one on the light side to defeat the dark lord, but the white specs must be part of the good in me, Voldemort must be the black, a lot of black.. And my scar. Is it going to follow me and curse me where ever I go, and who ever I become?' He huffed in anger. “Right I think we've had enough training for tonight, we'll come back the day after tomorrow. Hermione and I will start the potion, while you guy's still train, alright?” They all agreed and made their way to their respective dormitories and common rooms, very happy with the night outcomes. Harry collapsed into bed that night, unable to sleep with the thoughts and feelings of being a wolf. He slept that night of a black and white specked wolf running beside a large, black familiar scruffy dog.
Harry awoke the next morning in an exceedingly happy mood. He pulled himself out of bed, with a quick look at his egg, safely perched in his trunk, secured by blankets, before heading to the bath room to shower and dress. No other Gryffindors were in the common room when he stepped out of the stair case, humming lightly. The sun was just setting out side setting an evanescent red glow into every corner of the room; it was a wonderful sight. He sat him self down in one of the arm chairs beside the fire, its flames now reduced to glowing coals. He set to work on some plans for the DA, working out a time for the next meeting and what they should learn. He had decided to go over the basic spells, like disarming, stunning, charms and jinxes first, then when they were mastered to teach them all to cast a proper, corporal Patronus, what they were all looking forward to, since having a go at it last year, but not getting far. He strolled down to the Great Hall some time after, his stomach rumbling from hunger. He sat in a seat, grabbed a piece of toast and looked around the hall. The morning sun shone through the enchanted ceiling, casting a bright and happy mood around the hall, into every corner. Not many students were down for breakfast this early, only two Ravenclaws, which Harry realized with a jolt, that he knew them. One was Michael Corner, Ginny's ex-boyfriend, and the other, latching onto his arm and smiling brilliantly, was none other than Cho Chang.
Harry didn't feel any thing towards her, nothing more than shame for having a crush on her since fourth year. She was already with another guy, after her little escapade in the Owlery, not even a week ago. Harry smiled slightly, and went back to his food shaking his head. Ron joined him some time after, followed by Hermione and Ginny. Ginny and Ron began to talk about the night before, still with broad grins plastered on their freckled faces. Harry and Hermione smiled at each other and shared a quiet laugh. They too were still excited and exhilarated about their transformations and couldn't wait to brew the potion and do it again. They also were curious to know what the others would be, would they be magical, mythical or mortal like they were. They were all discussing various things when they were surrounded by a small group of people, comprised of Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws and Gryffindors and they all wanted to know the same thing. DA.
“Harry, when are we going to have another DA meeting?” the first one asked excitedly, it was Collin Creevely with his younger brother at his shoulder. They all nodded their heads in unison, all wanting to know the answer, Harry thought for a moment, and then answered.
“Well………how about tonight, I don't think anyone has got Quidditch tonight and I made the plans for it last night.” They all broke out in grins, “Ok, so how about half-an-hour after dinner, that way we can get ready. Just meet us in the Room of Requirement.” They all nodded their heads, thanked him, and made their way off, talking quickly and excitedly. Harry turned back in his seat, gulped down the rest of his Pumpkin juice, grabbed his bag and stood, ready to leave. Hermione stood also, but Ron sat still, looking uncomfortable about something, staring blankly into space. Harry waved his hand in front of his eyes, awakening from his thoughts.
“What, huh, oh, yeah………” He followed their lead, but still looked in a dream state, but when Harry asked him of this, he brushed it away and changed the subject to Dueling, which was their next subject and their first lesson ever. They didn't even know who the Dueling teacher was, since Dumbledore said nothing of the subject at the start of term. When they entered the allocated classroom, they gasped at its size. It was at least three quarters the size of the Great Hall, with shelves against the walls covered in books, and on brackets upon the walls was an assortment of weaponry; sizing from daggers, to broad swords in sheaths, cross bows, spears and even the occasional muggle hand gun. They walked in nonplussed, not noticing a cloaked figure hanging upside down from a horizontal pole at the end of the room. When the class had assembled, and none had viewed upon the vertical figure he hopped down and spoke, startling them all.
“Good Morning Class, welcome to your first ever Dueling Lesson. Firstly, my name is Professor Dimity,” she was fairly tall, with exceptionally long cherry red hair, reaching almost past her knees. With her high cheekbone face and deep blue eyes, she gave of a sense of power, “I will be your Duels teacher for the remainder of this year, teaching you to defend your selves in tricky situations. I have many weapons that we will use, beginning with the more simple ones, ending at the hard ones. Any questions?” Only one person raised their hand, which was a very excited Hermione, Professor Dimity gave her a warm smile, “Yes, Ms Granger?”
“Will this course be mostly practical or a mixture of both Practical and Theory?” she asked breathlessly.
“It will be completely practical, with the exception of a few notes being written down, any more?” when no one raised their hand, she told them all to find their own space where they could sit perfectly without touching any one else, when they did this she continued.
“Now that you all have your own personal space close your eyes, take deep breaths in through your nose, hold for three seconds then let it out through your mouth. Concentrate on blocking your mind from any interference, any noise and movement what so ever.” Every one began to take deep breaths, concentrating on blocking their minds. “Dueling is a complex act of defending your self and attacking you opponent, using physical, mental and magical methods in doing so. Many actions can be used in accomplishing your duel, firstly I will teach you the mental factor, beginning with meditation and readying you mind for the inevitable, included in this factor are mind blocks, mind control and emotions which may helping defeating your foe. Also mind games will be played.
Secondly comes the physical, with endurance courses, physical education and combat skills. Included in this factor are martial art skills, mazes and muggle fighting, including using these weapons arranged around the room.
Thirdly, and most important is the magical factor. You will learn more skills; including spells, hexes, jinxes, charms, and defense skills, later I will explain.” She said all this, with her eyes closed, sitting on the floor with her feet on her knees and hands resting on her head. She spoke with complete calmness between breaths, still breathing through her nose and out the mouth.
About half the lesson past, all containing the students meditating in their own space.
“Ok, now slowly open your eyes continue your breathing while I speak please,” Their eyes opened slowly, taking in the room trough the days haze, still keeping their breathing in the proper rhythm, “For the rest of the lesson I will speak while you listen and perhaps,” Her eyes flickered open to rest on Hermione, “take notes if you wish.” For the rest of the lesson all that could be heard was Professor Dimity's voice explaining the finer points of Dueling and the scratching of Hermione's quill on her fifth piece of parchment.
“That was quite an educational lesson, don't you think?” asked Hermione that morning heading to their next class, which happened to be Charms. Harry nodded slightly, still having numb legs from having them crossed on the hard ground for more than an hour and a half. Ron how ever did not agree.
“Educational? More like a waste of time. I was half asleep by the time she had finished what a load of rubbish that was. I can't wait to get to the good stuff, the actual fighting, that's what I want to do.” Hermione looked sternly at him but when she seen Harry's pleading look not to argue back, she put her head forward once again, shaking it in an angry manner.
In Charms the remainder of the class had finally completed their work with the army men and advanced to dolls and action figures while Hermione and Harry had finished their own dolls and moved to statues. Harry was struggling with this task, but he wasn't alone in this one; Hermione had only managed to chip her statue by thrusting her wand into it out of frustration. By the end of the lesson Harry had managed to make his statue, of a warrior with a bow and arrow, make its head animate, free to move around on its own accord. Hermione had a statue of a girl, with two long plaits reaching to her ankles. She managed to make her plaits sway in the wind that was blowing freely through the open window behind them.
After lunch was double Transfiguration, where they had finished with their fish and commenced to larger animals. Their subjects were cats and their task was to turn them into birds, points were given if the birds could talk or how pretty they were. Harry's cat was a small smoky gray kitten, with large blue eyes; it had begun chasing his feather quill when he was tracing it over writing sprawled across the desk. He didn't really want to transform this innocent kitten into a bird, even though that was the task. But he promised the little cat that he would transfigure him straight back in a matter of seconds. He took his wand and pointed it at the curious creature staring avidly up the magical stick before him. Harry took a breath.
“Lindarna Triori!” Harry gulped as the little gray kitten grew white, its fur turned into feathers and wings sprouted on its back. In front of Harry, instead of a feline was a small pure white owl, looking intently up at Harry, with the same large blue eyes the kitten possessed. Harry looked up to see a very surprised looking Professor McGonagall.
“Potter I'm impressed at how quickly you are catching this year. No student has ever mastered the Triori spell in one lesson before, and you have done it twice. I'm astounded; ten points to Gryffindor for the speed of it, since it's an owl and cant talk no points for that factor and three for the beauty of it. You may transfigure it back now, and you may keep the creature as a token of you great spellsmanship.” She smiled briskly before moving on to her next student. Hermione had chocolate colored Persian kitten, with large brown eyes, hardly distinguishable in its fur. She transformed it into a purple and blue parrot, which began to mimic everything professor McGonagall said. She was awarded fifteen points all up for it and was allowed to keep it if she wished. She agreed saying Crookshanks would like a little friend to play with.
Harry was about to transform his kitten back when a thought occurred to him. He said the spell but pulled out of it when then transformation was almost complete. In front of him stood his little gray kitten, but with a difference. On its back, instead of being smooth, the wings from the white owl still stood. The kitten was cross between a cat and a bird, giving it an eerie look. It mewed in appreciation, flapping its new found wings enthusiastically, slowly rising off the wooden surface. Harry laughed as it lost its balanced and plummeted to the ground, but Harry quickly used his Quidditch reflexes and plucked him out of the air before coming in reach of the floor.
At the end of the lesson Harry, Ron and Hermione made their way to the Great Hall for dinner, Harry with his gray and white kitten and Hermione with hers, Ron made an attempt at not being annoyed at them transfigured their specimens and keeping them by saying he never really like cats, but stayed quiet all night.
On the way out of the Great Hall that evening, a most unwelcome Professor Snape intercepted them.
“Potter, don't forget you have remedial potions with me tonight at eight o'clock. Be there on time.” He glared at them before sweeping away.
Harry groaned, “Oh, I forgot I had Occlumency tonight. Well I'll have to rush the DA tonight then.” They hurried to the Room of Requirement, noticing that the door was already visible, they moved inside. Everyone was already there, including a lot more. They all stopped talking when they entered and noticed the room grow considerably larger.
“Err….hello everyone. Thanks for coming, umm….” Harry glanced to Hermione for guidance, but she was looking happily at him; waiting. “Well, tonight we'll just go through what we've learnt and what we will be learning. We don't have to work in secrecy this time, since that cow Umbridge is gone for good.” Many people cheered. Harry went through all the things that they had learnt and will be learning. Many people cheered again when Harry mentioned about practicing summoning a Patronus as many weren't able to last year. An hour and a half past and soon it was going on seven thirty when Harry called it to a finish, saying that they will be notified when the next meeting would be.
He hurried to the common room, dumping his things in his dorm, checking his egg and running back down, his kitten in his arms. Hermione and Ron were sitting by the fire, just staring at the dancing flames. He slumped down beside Hermione, stroking his new pet softly.
“What are you going to call your cat Hermione?” he asked idly, looking at her kitten and Crookshanks play on the ground, while Harry's watched curiously.
“I don't know yet, maybe Mellow. What about you little fellow, half bird half kitten, perhaps Angel?” she said casually, reaching out and patting him on the head. Harry snickered.
“No, I don't think so, any way it's a boy. He looks kinda like an elf or imp. But I don't know.” I have to go,” he moaned looking at his watch, it was ten to eight, “Hermione could you look after my kitten until I get back, if you want to go to bed just give it to Ron. See you later.” He stood regretfully, having his friends wishing him good luck, he left.
He was wondering back to the common room after almost three hours of Snape prying into his thoughts. He was able to push him out of his head when he came close to seeing their Animagi training, but he was none too aware. He woke the fat lady and whispered the pass word to her, entering on tip toes into the dormant Gryffindor common room, the fire still blazing, but slightly more low now after three hours. He was making his way over to the boys dormitories when movement from behind startled him.
A voice spoke out from the darkness, “Harry, Is that you?” Harry recognized it as Hermione's voice and answered, “Yeah, it's me.” He moved over to her where she was sitting in an armchair by the fire. Mellow and Crookshanks were curled up together on the carpet while Harry's kitten bounded playfully over to him and flew unsteadily up to his arms. “Hey boy, miss me did you?” he laughed quietly sitting down with him on the couch. Hermione smiled as he thanked her. “You didn't have to wait up, I told you to give him to Ron if you get tired.” The glowing flames from the fire danced around the room, throwing shadows murkily over their faces.
“I know, but I'm not tired, plus they fell asleep and I didn't want to wake them. Your kitten however hasn't even closed his eyes; he's been sitting there in the spot where you left him, staring into the flames. He only moved when you came back in.” She smiled gracefully down at the smoky form cradled in Harry's arms. “Have you thought of a name yet?” Harry thought for a second, yeah……I have. How about Shadow?” he said thoughtfully, Hermione nodded her head, “Yeah he looks like a shadow, Mellow and Shadow. Well I'm going to bed, I'll see you in the morning, and you too Shadow.” She rubbed Shadow playfully over his head, before scooping up her pets and disappearing up the stairs. Harry grinned before following her lead, carrying a sleeping Shadow in his arms.
The next day came and past, with nothing really exciting happening, except when Peeves swooped down on an unsuspecting Professor Snape and tipped a dirty bucket of mop water over his head and robes. There they were again. In the small circle, missing Harry and Hermione, who were bustled next to a cauldron, busy mixing its contents. “Ok, now stir three times anti-clockwise then twice clockwise. Add the Horned Toad tongues then stir one and a half times anti-clockwise. Leave for a week, then add the Unicorn Hairs, stir four times clockwise, then twice anti-clockwise, before adding the Essence of Merlap. Leave for three days, stir five times anti-clockwise then five times clockwise. Now it is ready for drinking.” Hermione finished reading from the book as Harry finished stirring in the tongues. “Did you do it properly?” she asked nervously, Harry nodded, a rumbling feeling erupting in his stomach. “Great!” They both turned to see all of their four friends lying on the ground, trembling. Harry heard Hermione gasp as Ron began to grow red hair, his arms became even ganglier. He was now shorter, and unmistakably an orangutan. Next came Neville, who shrunk considerably, grew dark gray, almost black fur and turned into a small blind mole. Ginny and Luna changed at exactly the same time, Ginny growing red and white fur, becoming a fox and Luna sprouting white feathers over her body, shrinking and becoming a dove. They all turned back into their human forms, all panting and sweating.
“What……what happened?” gasped Ron, standing shakily to his feet, supporting Luna up, while Neville helped Ginny.
“You transformed, all of you did at practically the same time!” said a very excited Hermione. They all asked what they were, and Harry and Hermione were more than happy to tell them what they were. At the end they all looked please, except Ron. “How did I know I was going to be red in some way?” he huffed angrily, leading the way back to the Gryffindor common room, saying goodbye to Luna along the way.
That night Harry stayed awake along time, thinking about the night which had almost ended. He closed his eyes soon after, a smile upon his lips and dreams of a wolf, horse, orangutan, fox and a dove flying above them, with a small gray mole riding on the back of the chestnut mare. And along side the wolf ran a large shaggy dog and a silver stag.
