Chapter Eighteen- To Hunt, to Prey, to Die, to Watch

A week had past since that joyful moment in the library when they had kissed. It had left Harry in a state of endless joy, but also made his scar sear with an unknown pain. Unlike before when his scar had burned, he knew, somehow, what emotion the dark lord was going through. This time, he knew it was an emotion or feeling, but it was a new one, and his scar only seared with that pain when he thought of Hermione.

The DA, lead by Harry, had began to brew many potions. Hermione was in charge of the potion making group, following a list put together by an assortment of people from all three houses, mostly Ravenclaw, being the most advanced in their classes, excluding Hermione. The list comprised from Truth Potions to Lie Potions, Camouflage Potions to Revealing Potions and Healing Potions to Pain Giving Potions. They were covering many aspects of that particular subject, and one potion Harry, Hermione and Ron were looking forward to brewing, was the Polyjuice Potion.

There were three groups in the DA, working on different things. The first one being the Potion Group, the second was the Weapons `Unit' as they called it, run by Ron. They were working on different weapons they could use to help defend themselves. They weren't very good, but at least they would work when needed. And the last group was one which continued on the many spells they had learnt over the past two years. The people in that group chose to stay and perfect the spells they had learnt. Harry would occasionally stop and watch them and once they all perfected the ones they were working on, he would show them another one, and how to perform it.

They were all happy and involved in this little group that they had created, which left Harry feeling an immense swell of pride. He was glad they all were ready and willing to help him fight and possibly die for him. But, no, he thought, he wouldn't let it go that far. When the time came for him to go and fight Voldemort, he'd do it alone. He'd curse the others if he had to, just to stop them getting themselves killed.

After one exhausting class of DA, Harry decided to take a walk in the grounds. He slinked out of the great doors into the cool night air of the grounds. Making sure no one was around and watching, he transformed into his wolf form and bonded lightly down to the lake. Once there he padded across its surface, laughing in his mind at how strange it felt to walk on water. A voice spoke out of the darkness.

“So your Daroth.” Harry yelped and plunged into the freezing depths. He was submerging deeply; doggy paddling with all his might to reach the surface. He broke through the water, his human head showing through the murky darkness. He could see no one or nothing showing in the nighttime, but he had defiantly heard someone say `Daroth' his wolf name. He decided to stay silent, and hope he was hearing things. But no.

“It's true isn't it?” said a voice coming from the darkness. It was a sneering voice, yet kind. Harry squinted his eyes and spotted a blond haired head emerge from the darkness. He sighed in relief. “Oh, it's only you.” He said, swimming to the edge and hoisting himself out. He shook his head, spraying water in every direction. The night air cut into his moisture soaked skin. He shivered uncontrollably.

“What are you doing out here?” Harry asked Draco Malfoy, watching as the boy drew closer.

“I was flying. So your Daroth, aren't you, I seen you walking on the water, I caught you, you can't deny It.” said Draco, looking at him.

“But, you saw me the other week, running on the water, and you had tried to do it yourself but you fell through. And how do you know about Daroth?” Harry looked at him suspiciously. The blond haired boy walked into a beam of moonlight, his trademark blond hair ruffled and windblown.

“You're not the only one being visited by Amity. I'm not allowed into The Reverience, but she takes me to this cliff overlooking a huge ocean. It's great. She told me of a human, taking on the form of another, and being able to command nature. I never thought of you. But she said they were of light and love and if dark touches them for too long they would perish. So I came out here to think and spotted you walking on the lake's surface. I immediately put everything together.” Harry was still suspicious.

“How come I didn't see you flying?” he asked curiously, wringing out his hair.

Draco grinned. “You're not the only one with talents. So, what else can you do, other than walk on water?”

“I haven't really tried!” he said truthfully, thinking of something to do.

“Why haven't you?”

“Well, I haven't been out much and no one knows that I'm Daroth, other than Amity and you!”

“You didn't even tell your so called best friend and girlfriend?” he said, an unbelieving look on his face.

“I didn't want to tell anyone. That'll be just more things to be famous for. Like, I didn't ask for any of this!” he said, slumping down onto a rock overlooking the lake. Draco climbed a tree close by, sitting on a large branch hanging over the water.

“But you have to admit,” He said, “its pretty cool. Being able to walk on water, and being the only one to kill the dark lord” Harry coughed, loudly, rounding on the boy sitting in the large Beachwood.

“What-what do you mean. I'm the only one?” he said softly, straining to hear any sound. Draco laughed.

“You think the dark lord didn't know that, Harry. My father told me that I had to keep a watch on you this year, before he was thrown in Azkaban. He said you were the one that would destroy our master and that if I wanted to be just like him, I had to deliver you to him. When he left, I ran.” He finished, looking out across the dark water, a peaceful look on his face.

“But why?” Harry asked. “Last year you thought Voldemort was all high and mighty and that I would meet my end one day just like my parents.” Draco flinched at Voldemort's name, but didn't respond back too quickly.

“Last year I had different things in my mind.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, last year I thought I could get away without being a death eater. So I talked as if I was going to be one to make everyone think I was going to follow my father. But my father got wind of it and told me that once he left for Azkaban, the dark lord would come and take me to brand me as a death eater, and then we would travel to Azkaban to release everyone. But, like I said, I fled. Now they're after me.”

Harry was silent, thinking things through. “So you're just like me now. Trying to stay alive and get away from Voldemort.” Draco watched Harry while he was staring in the clear shallows of the lake, deep in thought.

“Yes, just like you. Even though I hate to admit it.” They sat there for a while, just watching and listening to the night insects playing their tunes while everything else slept. “Hey, Draco?”

“Yeah,”

“Do you wanna join my club, the DA?” he asked, nervously. The blond haired boy showed a sign of interest in his eyes.

“Why, what would it accomplish?” Harry was taken back by his answer.

“Umm, well last year, at the ministry, you know about that?” Draco nodded, “Most of us survived because of being in that club. I taught them all those spells and things that kept us alive, although barely.”

He nodded slowly, “Ok when” he asked Harry.

“Friday nights, just after dinner. Just come to that room you busted us in last year.” Draco laughed, remembering Professor Umbridge.

“Did you know,” began Draco, “That, that cow Umbridge promised us ten Galleons each if we found your stupid little club. And she didn't even give them to us!” Harry laughed his time, his voice ringing out into the darkness. “And, you don't know how lucky you are.”

“Whatta you mean?” said Harry, confused.

“Well, in our first year, if you had become friends with me instead of Weasley, you probably would be dead or worse by now.” Harry thought idly on this.

“You're probably right, you know. But Dumbledore would've stopped it, if it went that far, I'd imagine.”

“I suppose so, but still, your one lucky son of a-“ he didn't finish what he was saying as there was a piercing scream echoing around the grounds. They both got to their feet, Draco jumping out of the tree to safe ground.

“What in the name of god was that?” hissed Draco, scanning the grounds with his eyes. They both began walking up the grounds, keeping a look out for any movement. They heard it again, this time followed by an outbreak of slight, humored sobs. They looked at each other, and crept up to the courtyard and peered over the half wall. Inside they spotted Ron and Ginny, both stifling giggles and peering around the other side of the wall, obviously looking for them. Harry and Draco looked at each other, took out their wands and jumped around the side yelling.

“Oh, HELP!” yelled Harry, pretending to be extremely scared. Draco dragged his leg behind him and cradled his arm. “Please, help, run! WEREWOLF!” Ron and Ginny both jumped at their sudden appearance then became considerably pale.

“WH-what!” stammered Ron.

“Did, did you s-say were-werewolf?” croaked Ginny. Harry jumped forward at them and landed beside them, panting.

“We were near the lake and we heard a scream coming from up here so we began walking then this huge, werewolf jumped out at us. We began to run, but Draco got bitten, look!” they both leaned in to examine Draco's non-injured arm, when Harry smiled and yelled.

“WEREWOLF!” right in their ears from behind. They both jumped and screamed looking around frantically. Harry and Draco began to laugh hysterically, rolling around on the ground. It took a few moments before the Weasley's realized what happened.

“HARRY POTTER!” snarled Ginny, advancing on him. He backed away, still laughing with Malfoy.

“You should have seen your faces!” said Harry between laughs. They were both still a bit pale, but were starting to become red.

“Why did you do that?” yelled Ron, huffing wiping own his pajama pants.

“You shouldn't have made that fake scream then, we thought someone was in trouble!” said Harry.

“But we thought there really was a werewolf! Don't do that again!” went Ginny. “Then you don't do that again!” said Draco, chuckling.

“What were you two doing out here in the dead of night anyway?” said Ron, looking at them smirking. “You do have a girlfriend you know, Harry. Her name's Hermione, and she's a girl!” Harry punched Ron hardly on the arm. “Don't joke about that stuff, mate”

“I was just sitting by the lake then Draco turned up so we were talking, nothing else.” said Harry.

“Yeah, we were just talking. And anyways, Weasley, why were YOU so worried. Thought I'd steal, little Harry away from you.” Ron's became scarlet once more at Draco's words. But Harry stopped him before he launched himself at the Slytherin.

“We better get back, before Snape or someone finds us. Come one. See ya tomorrow, Malfoy.” said Harry, smirking.

“Yeah, until then, Potter.” answered back the blond haired boy, disappearing into the castle doors.

That night, after trailing Ginny back up into the common room then into the dormitory with Ron Harry sighed with relief at his eventful night. He closed his eyes, and frowned as he drifted into sleep, forgetting to put up his mind shield, which was a big mistake.

“Did you get it?” hissed a cold, cruel voice. Harry realized with a jolt that it was his own throat making that noise. His was standing at the edge of a large hedge. There was an opening where he was standing, showing many more hedges in an odd pattern. It was a maze.

“Yes master,” said a voice to his left, it was small and quivering. Voldemort smiled a triumphant smile.

“Good, good, bring him forward.” He said and watched as the small cloaked man vanished then returned, two men in tow. They were supporting a large metal crate between them. It was padlocked and a loud snarling was coming from it, followed by ripping sounds. They placed it before him, then bowed and stepped back.

“Excellent, and our prey?” another man came forward holding a large sack, it was moving and small sobs were emitting from it. The man gave the sack to Harry, bowed and stepped back with the other three men. Harry slowly opened the mesh sack and peered inside. His stomach gave a squirm as he viewed on its occupants. Inside were two small children. One looked about five; she had black hair and large blue eyes. Her brother had black hair also and large brown eyes and was about two. Their faces were tear marked and white.

“So is everything ready?”

“Yes, master.” spoke the death eaters in unison. “Excellent, excellent. Are you there, Harry Potter?” Harry gasped inside his head. “Yes, I can sense your panic. I'm glad, because you're about to witness why you can not deliver pain to me without suffering in return.” He strolled to the edge of the maze and through the bag and its tenants inside. The two children scrambled out and watched with terror as Voldemort strolled to the large cage. He placed one white, bony hand upon it. There was a sickening howl.

“You both better run, I'll give you a head start.” The two children ran off and disappeared, the older one holding the younger ones hand, who was crying silently. “Now, Harry. You're going to watch, and there's nothing you can do.” With that he turned and strolled back, up a hidden set of stairs and onto a large platform. From it you could see the entire maze where the dead ends were and as Harry looked around for an exit, he realized there wasn't one. He spotted the two children hurrying along a narrow path way which lead to an intersection.

“Release the hound!” yelled Voldemort, as the large crate was heaved forwards and the latch was undone. In the light from the full moon, you could see a large, wolf bound out of it and tear off in the direction the two children went. It was a werewolf, and it looked hungry.

Harry tried to yell out, to escape what he was about to witness. There was no way that the two innocent children could escape the deadly canine which was tearing through the maze, stopping to sniff sometimes then begin again. He was trying to claw his way out of this monsters mind, to wake up in his own bed, to make this no more than a nightmare. But he couldn't, it was real and those children were about to die if he didn't do something soon. The werewolf was now a row away from its prey. They were still running, tears streaming down their faces, too scared to make a sound.

He screamed in Voldemort's head, causing the man to bend down, hands clasped to his brow in pain. “STOP IT!” screamed Harry, his voice coming out as Voldemort's. Suddenly he heard no more. For a fraction of a second there was nothing, no pain, no sound, no sight. Then it all came flooding back. His eyes snapped open, hoping to see his own bed, but he wasn't. The maze was before him, and the death eaters. They were all looking out upon the maze, some flicking their eyes to their master then back to where the werewolf would be eating the humans by now. But it wasn't. Voldemort struggled forwards and gasped as he looked upon what USED to be a maze.

All the hedges had moved to rearrange themselves to form many squares, in all sizes. They were all in order; from smallest to largest, and in the centre of the smallest hedge square, were the two children, quivering and crying. Voldemort trailed his eyes to find the werewolf, or what was once a living wolf. It was now pinned up to the side of the outer square, a large wooden stick protruding from its chest. Blood poured forth, spilling silently over the grass, as dark as mud. Suddenly there were thousands of popping sounds as the grounds surrounding the maze were covered in many cloaked wizards and witches, clothed in orange.

Voldemort screamed in anguish and disapparated, growling, “Next time you won't be so lucky, Potter!”

There was a fierce burning, as Harry awoke, his scar searing with the worst pain he'd ever felt.
