Chapter Twenty-One- The Aftermath
The grounds were totally destroyed. Hagrids cabin was a mere burning heap, luckily Hagrid, or Fang weren't inside when it caught alight. The Quidditch Stadium was the same as Hagrid's home; a pile of rubble. Many bodies littered the grounds. Both students and death eaters. There were no bodies from Order members, as they were prepared to fight them, but the others weren't. Harry staggered across the grounds, Bolt nested on his shoulder, a dark shade of grey. He was now running, ignoring the stabbing pains of his shoulder, determined to get to where he wanted to go. He ran as fast as he could to a spot near the greenhouses, he turned the corner to the back of greenhouse Four and stopped dead, heart thumping hard.
Lying on the ground in front of him was a large, white dragon. It was Draco. He rushed forward, saying over and over again, “No, he can't be, he just can't!” he leant over the looming form, placing his head on its chest. He could hear a faint `thump' but it was so distant you could hardly hear it. He shoved Draco softly, trying to wake him.
“Draco, Draco, wake up! Please, wake up!” he said desperately still shoving him. He hadn't noticed the form looming from behind him, to it was too late. Harry fell to the ground, screaming in pain. White hot knives were pressing in on him, into his skin, into his soul. He grinded his teeth and broke free of the curse. He was left panting and throbbing painfully. Lucius Malfoy smirked from above him.
“He won't wake, Potter, he's dead, just like you'll be!” Harry noticed blood seeping from a large gash on his head, and his arm hand limply by his side, blood dripping steadily to the ground. “He didn't hurt me as much as he hoped, my dear old son, did he now?” his blond hair was not sleek as it used to be, nor were his eyes as bright and cold as before. His hair was stained with blood and stuck to his scalp, and his eyes were hollow and grey. He smirked despite himself.
“What do you want, Malfoy?” Harry spat, heaving himself to his feet, clasping his wand into his hand, before being slammed back to the ground. Lucius Malfoy was standing on his back, digging his feet into his spine. “What have we here?” he sniggered, grasping something on his back. Harry let out a yelp as the pain in his sore shoulder was multiplied tenfold.
“Why don't you ever know when to give up, Potter?” sneered Malfoy, still twisting the thing in his shoulder. “Because of you, all pf the people who died today, died because of you, don't you see? If you had joined the Dark Lord none of this would have happened, and your friends would have died painless deaths. But now, the Dark Lord is very angry, and the only thing that will please him more than having you join him, is having you dead. So, I'm going to kill you and once more become my master's most loyal servant. Now, this is much more than you deserve, Potter, and you deserve to die a painful, bloody death. But since I only have my wand this will have to do!” he said. Harry felt the tip of his wand being pushed into the back of his skull. He couldn't move. He was frozen, thoughts kept flashing through his mind.
I'm finally going to see my mum and dad, and I can say sorry to Cedric! Harry prepared himself to die, his wand lay a few feet away, and blood stained from Harry's cut hands. He clenched his teeth. He didn't want to die now, he wanted to held defeat Voldemort, but he couldn't do anything, now that he was pinned to the ground and was wandless.
Malfoy's voice echoed in his head. “AVADA KEDAVRA!” Harry shut his eyes, seeing a flash of green light. He felt a heavy thud land on his shoulder. If this was dying, then why could he still feel the painful aching of his shoulder? He opened his eyes, and spied a sheet of red-blond hair scattered on the ground, and the open, staring eyes of Lucius Malfoy. Harry heaved himself to his knees, hearing the thump of the man's body slide from his back and onto the grassy ground. Harry turned to see Draco Malfoy, in his human form, standing and staggering on the spot. The wand which was clamped in his hand dropped to the ground. He gave Harry a brief, strained smile, before collapsing to the bloody grass.

The infirmary was packed with many white beds. It had been expanded to about the size of the Great Hall, and barely fit all the injured students and teachers. Harry sat on a bed in the corner of the Hospital wing, staring hauntingly out of the window into the grounds. He could see the orange robed figures moving about the slopes. They were the clean-up crew from the Ministry of Magic. It had been almost a complete day since the attack, but Harry didn't feel any better. He turned from the window and glanced at the bed beside his. Draco was asleep in it, his arm in a sling and a bandage wrapped around his head. Hermione and Ron were helping rebuild Hagrids cabin, since it had been completely demolished.
Harry looked at the small table between their beds. Sitting upon it was a small, golden wing, its edge jagged and bloody. It was this shard which had been lodged in Harry's shoulder for the entire ordeal, and it was this object which Lucius Malfoy had been twisting deeper into his flesh. Just the thought of the elder Malfoy, he looked back at Draco. Harry's old enemy had killed his own father to save Harry's life. Just this simple act had created this strong feeling of honor and pride for the sixth year Slytherin in Harry's heart. He would have to find someway to repay him, something that was at least a fraction to the large sacrifice he had made.
There were many beds, many injured students and teachers. But the people lying in these beds and the people scattered about the grounds who had participated in the siege did not equal what the schools total used to be, as many had died. Around half of the students and teachers were admitted in the wing and a quarter was helping about the grounds. The other quarter was no longer with them. They were either dead or missing. In this category fell Professor Sinistra and Professor Vector, as well as Colin Creevely, Susan Bones and others. These were only the people Harry had seen lying in the grounds on his trek through the battlefield.
Many others hadn't been counted yet. Harry was so empty, so shaken at the thought of Albus Dumbledore, the world's most powerful wizard, gone, with no trace left. Anger and hatred seeped into him from the thought of another life lost because of him. They were all doomed if Dumbledore was really gone.
Harry was disrupted from his thoughts as a quiet moan caught his attention. He scrambled over to Draco's bed, ignoring the pain in his back and shoulder. The blond-haired Slytherin slowly opened his eyes, looking blurrily at Harry's concerned face. He looked at his sling and felt his head and the bandage. He looked at Harry quizzically, as if saying, “What the?”
Harry grinned. At that moment the hospital wing door opened and Remus Lupin stepped in, looking weary but happy at the sight of the two wide-eyed boys. He smiled.
“Feeling alright there, Draco, Harry?” he asked, taking a seat at the end of Harry's bed.
“A bit sore, sir, but better.” Mumbled Draco, rubbing his arm.
“Same here Remus, any word of Dumbledore?” Harry asked quietly and sadly. To his astonishment Lupin smiled.
“Yes, Harry, the headmaster is fine; he will explain it to you soon!” Harry sat, his mouth hanging open, his mind screaming at the thought of Dumbledore living. Lupin turned to Draco.
“Harry told me what you did for him,” Draco bowed his head, “that was very brave and noble of you, I'm sure the world would love to know how much of a hero you are, the headmaster and everyone is very proud!” he said warmly and proudly, placing a hand on Malfoy's shoulder. He turned to Harry. “The headmaster would like to see you in his office, Harry, as soon as you can get there,” Harry nodded, smiled at Draco and slid off his bed and out of the door; with one last glance at all the heroes of the event. He smiled silently, feeling a hole gaping in his stomach at the thought of all the lives lost.
He neared the stone statue of the gargoyle marking the entrance to Albus Dumbledore's chambers. It was a symbol of how Harry felt; cold, blank and lifeless. The hidden doorway opened revealing the spiraling staircase without Harry having to say a word. He mounted the revolving steps and made his way up, hearing the door slide back with a click. Once he reached the top, he knocked twice softly. He heard the headmaster beckon him in. he pushed open the door to find professor Dumbledore standing up and gazing out of the window. Harry caught his reflection in the glass. His eyes held no sign of a twinkle. They were cold and empty. Silent tears escaped their sad depths.
“Thank you for coming, Harry.” He said quietly, walking back to his desk. Harry hated seeing him like this. Just the look on his face was enough to make anger boil inside him at the thought of someone making his mentor this upset. Dumbledore brushed the tears away and turned to Harry, a sad smile on his lips. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say something, his office door burst open, and in stumbled a shaken looking Sirius.
“Where's Harry, is he okay?” he said loudly, not spotting his godson seated in a chair at the desk, staring at him. But he seen spotted the emerald eyes and bolted forwards, enveloping him in a hug. “Oh, I was so worried! I couldn't find you in the Hospital Wing and nobody knew where you went, except Moony, and………I'm so glad you're alright!” he pulled back and looked into his eyes, Harry seeing a large amount of relief replacing the fear.
“Yes, he's fine, Sirius. I was just about to explain to him how it is I came to be alive after he witnessed me be devoured by a dragon.” Harry nodded vigorously. “Well, when I was inside its foul smelling mouth, I thought, `I can't be eaten by a dragon, that's just not me!' so I disapparated, but apparently it's not that easy when your inside of a dragons throat. And if your wondering how it is that I disapparated on school grounds, the headmaster can to do many things. Now, disapparating from a dragon's stomach is quite difficult, because after I disappeared I reappeared in Antarctica for some strange and silly reason. And when I landed I dropped my wand and it sank to the bottom of a very deep and cold stream, so I couldn't get it. It was very lucky for the fact that at that precise moment Remus turned up, telling me how he knew where I'd disappeared to and thought it was highly amusing, despite the circumstances. So he helped me get my wand, which was frozen solid and we got back here as soon as we could. Which happened to be very late last night! So there's my story, not very spectacular, was it!” Harry and Sirius were both staring, open mouthed at Albus Dumbledore.
`Now, back to business.” His face turned grave, but a hint of pride mixed in with the seriousness. “Yesterday, Harry, you shown large amount of bravery, surprising us all once more. Even in the face of your worst fears, you came out alive and in the lead. If it wasn't for your quick actions and superb friends and allies, most of the students and teachers would not be here right now. After I was taken, I know you must have been scared, but you took that fear and let it bring power to you. You used it to your advantage, surprising Voldemort and his followers. Yesterday I felt so much pride for you and the students you have taught to be strong. Yesterday, I'm sure to say that your parents were watching, and they too, were proud. They were proud to see their son fighting and avenging their deaths. They watched as you saved many lives, and once more escaped alive, stronger than ever. They were watching, Harry, and they were prouder then ever before and they love you, for being a hero, and being their son.” Tears slid down Harry's cheeks. Sirius hugged his godson, letting him get rid of his built up emotions. He too was crying, crying for his friends he lost and crying for his godson's inevitable future. But mostly, he was crying with pride.

“Yesterday was a day none will forget.” Began Professor Dumbledore the next day, gazing upon all the students, teachers and order members. “Many people fought and survived they are heroes. Many people fought and died. Even thought they are lost to us here, they will forever remain in our hearts as heroes. Brothers, sisters and even parents died in the battle, but it has only made us stronger. The love you felt for our loved ones had not been lost, but been found. With that love we can fight back. We can fight the evil that has taken our friends and family from us. We can achieve victory. We can overcome our fears and fight with love. All of you are the bravest people I have ever met, students, teachers and colleagues alike. You have fought and come out on top. Voldemort is only a person like us all, but he has chosen his own future, just like you all have the choice of choosing which future you will take. It is your own choice; nobody has the decision of choosing it for you.
“The battle of Hogwarts will not be the first of the second war, it is only the start. The end of this time is far from over. We can only guess when harmony will finally be brought back to the world. Until then. We can only hope. We can hope and pray for a better world once Voldemort had been defeated and we can only hope that it will be soon. Until that hope has been fulfilled, we can only grow stronger with each loss, with each battle. With love and hope, we can win this War and finally bring the vengeance to our lost heroes.” The hall burst into applause, many faced were tear streaked. Their tears represented the sadness they felt and the loved ones they lost.
Harry sat at the Gryffindor table, with Hermione, Ron and Draco sitting around him all staring up at the headmaster with respect and rekindled hope. With such people full of love and hope like the people in this hall, we may finally defeat Voldemort and bring the justice everyone who had died at the hands of Voldemort, deserved! Thought Harry, gazing at all the faces, feeling something awaken inside him, something powerful.

Exams had been cancelled. Many memorial statues and plaques had been placed at the front of the school in memory of those who were lost. Hagrid's cabin had been rebuilt, it was now double the size of his old one, and it, too, had a memorial sign. On all the outside walls of his cabin was engraved the names of all the students and teachers killed in the battle. With them were messages written by their brothers, sisters or friends. Everyone who looked upon the school would know what had occurred here one day. And would at least know one person who had dies a hero, or one person who had fought and survived.
The train ride home was a sullen affair, in which everyone was remembering their disastrous year. Harry was not in a happy mood. He didn't want to return the Dursley's. He didn't want to be stuck with his own thoughts for that long until he returned to Hogwarts. The train pulled into the station. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco and Ginny hopped off. On the way through the barrier they heard people yelling out to them, saying thanks for saving them or sorry if they lost someone. Harry didn't talk when Mrs. Weasley hugged him tightly and wished him a good holiday, nor did he even notice Ginny wrap her arms around hi, kissing him on the cheek.
“What's wrong, Harry dear?” Molly Weasley asked clearly concerned. Harry shrugged. But he did register one voice, one voice that he was tremendously glad to hear. It was Sirius's voice.
“Hey, what's wrong kiddo, didn't forget you're coming to live with me, did you?” Sirius boomed, patting him on the back forcefully. Harry smiled slightly.
“I kind of did, but it's just, I don't know……….” He trailed off, shuffling his feet and gazing around at all his friends.
“Don't be so gloom mate, we've got the whole summer together, Dursley free, and with Hermione!” he said Hermione's voice in a sing song tune, getting a smack on the back of the head from his mother. Harry finally broke a grin. It was true. The Weasley's were staying at Grimmauld Place with Sirius and Harry and Hermione must've been staying there too! They all laughed at Harry's immediate change of mood. There was one person who was staying back, a sad look plastered on his face. It was Draco. Harry moved back to the blond-haired Slytherin. He looked up when he seen Harry standing next to him.
“What's up, Draco?” Harry asked quietly. Draco shrugged, “I have no where to go! Mother knows that I don't want to be a Death Eater and disowned me as well as father. I have no where to go!” he said angrily, glaring at the happy smiling Weasley's. Harry's brain ticked, putting things together.
“Well, if it's ok with Sirius, and the others, you can stay with us at Grimmauld?” Harry said cautiously, looking at Malfoy curiously. Draco shot his head up and looked into Harry's eyes.
“You mean it, Potter?” he said seriously and unbelievingly. Harry nodded, smiling. They wandered over to the other group, standing and chatting away. When Harry asked if it was alright if Draco could stay with them, if only for a short while, they all broke out in grins.
“Of course he can!” said Mrs. Weasley happily. Sirius even slapped him on the back.
“Anything for the bloke who saved our dear Harry's life!” Harry grinned, watching with humor at the horrified look on Malfoy's face. Harry could practically read what was going on in Draco's head. He'd be saying, “What am I getting myself into?” They all wandered to the entrance into the Kings Cross car park, all smiling and talking. Even thought they were so happy now, in their hearts they were still remembering all the lives that were lost and all the heroes that had been made that year. And as they passed into the hot sunshine, they remembered that it was just the beginning of the Second War, and the end was still far away. And when the end did come, there will be a lot less happy faces in the world, but a lot more heroes, much stronger than before.
