Chapter Eleven- Defence and Patroni
“Welcome everyone, to the first meeting of the Defence Association,” Harry said to the small crowd of students. It had taken a few days to organize this meeting and get everyone alerted to its time and location. The people before him were the students from the fifth years DA, minus a few. Hermione had said just to change the times on the fake galleons and just see how many people still had them.
It was a Monday night with the wind howling outside like a thousand wailing ghouls. Harry could see Hermione and Ron in the crowd, as well as Ginny, Neville and Luna. He smiled warmly at them before continuing.
“All of you were a part of this Defence Group a couple of years ago, and I thought it might be a good idea to start it back up again. We will be learning to cast more complex spells and enchantments, and I will teach most of you the proper stances for duelling. We might revise a few of the simpler spells, just to get you all use to them again and maybe even the Patronus.” Harry said, grinning at all the excited faces.
So, erm - any questions?” he asked. Parvarti Patil put her hand in the air. “Parvarti?” Harry called, pointing to her.
“Why didn't we have the DA last year?” she asked. Harry thought about it for a second before answering with, “I really didn't think anyone wanted to do it! And I had so much going on and I didn't have time for it either.” He said. “Anyone else?”
A blond haired boy put his had up. “Yes?” Harry said.
“Are we the only ones that are going to do it? I mean, after last year and the battle, heaps of people will want to have the power to fight back. It wont be fair if we're the only ones able to defend ourselves while others are dying!” the boy said. Many other people agreed with him, mumbling responses.
“Okay, well - maybe I can make out some posters and stick them in the common rooms so everyone knows about it? That way, everyone will have the chance to learn the defence I'm teaching and they can make their own choice to join or not?” Harry said lightly, hoping not too many people would want to join.
“How come you're teaching us more duelling when we had that as a subject last year?” someone at the back asked. “Because,” Harry began, smiling. “There is going to be a Duelling Competition this year and the headmaster asked me to brush up you skills on the topic.”
There were murmurs of agreement in the crowd and even a few approving whistles. Harry grinned to see Hermione beaming back at him. “Okay, if that's all of the questions, pair up and practice the Stunning and Enervating Spells!” There was a moment when everyone branched out to find partners before there were red lights flying everywhere. Luckily, the Room of Requirement came with pillows otherwise, there would be many people with headaches.
Harry prowled around through the pairs, helping anyone who needed it. He walked passed Ron and Luna, where Ron was just Enervating Luna. He paused where Ginny and Neville were taking duelling Stances and corrected Neville's a little. Hermione was doing the same thing as Harry; she was adjusting a small girl's aim towards her partner's chest.
“Well done, Harry!” she said, kissing him on the cheek. The small girl giggled, causing Harry to blush lightly. Being praised by Hermione was the best feeling in the world and if a Dementor was there at that moment, Harry thought his patronus would be as large as that room.
“Thanks, Mione!” he said, grinning broadly.
It was another hour before the students started filing out, thanking Harry for the great meeting. Soon it was only Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Ginny and Neville left in the room, lounging on the many beanbags and pillows. Harry and Hermione were snuggled up on a long, fury red beanbag, enjoying the warmth of each other's bodies. Ron and Luna were sitting together on pillows across the room while Ginny and Neville were talking by the wall.
“That was a great meeting, Harry,” Luna said dreamily, her protrudent eyes gazing at Harry. “Erm - thanks, Luna!” he said, grinning madly. “Yeah, mate, that was good!” Neville said, his round face beaming in happiness. “I can't wait to get to doing Patronus's, I want to master mine by the end of the year!” he said brightly.
“Me too!” Ron said in chorus with Ginny. The others laughed as the two siblings glared at one another.
“Hey, Luna, can you cast a Patronus?” Hermione asked from Harry's side. The blond haired Ravenclaw nodded slowly. “It is a dolphin,” she said. Hermione oohed while Harry wondered what it was with girls and dolphins.
“I can teach you guys now, if you want? Before we have to go back to the common room,” Harry said. He immediately spotted the identical looks of excitement on his friend's faces. Ginny and Ron jumped up at the same time while Neville was fast behind them.
“Well, hurry up, Harry, we don't have all night!” Ron said, as Harry got up. Hermione and Luna helped him teach them the proper spell movements and incantation, and told them to picture your happiest thought in his mind.
All of them closed their eyes and sat in silence for a few seconds, searching for the perfect memory. “Okay, try it now!” Harry said. All three of them opened their eyes and pointed their wands, shouting, “Expecto Patronum!”
Harry watched as only feeble wisps of smoke erupted from their wands. “Try another memory. Remember it has to be your best memory or happiest thought. Keep it in your wand when you cast the spell. Neville, come here,” he said as Ron and Ginny tried again. Neville lumbered over to him, disappointment in his eyes.
“W\hat thought have you been using?” Harry asked quietly. Neville turned slightly red and mumbled, “The one when I got first in Herbology,” he said. Harry smiled and whispered. “How about you try one of you and your parents together, happy?” Harry said. Pain and confusion briefly flickered in Neville's eyes before a newfound determination replaced it. He nodded and stepped back with Ron and Ginny.
He closed his eyes for a moment before opening them and pointing his wand. “EXPECTO PATRONUM!” He shouted. A great, silver object flew from his wand and galloped across the scarlet carpet. It was a large lion with a long mane and a pair of deep shining eyes. It prowled around for a few laps before disappearing into nothing. The others clapped while Neville turned beet red, shock and excitement on his face.
“Brilliant, mate!” Harry said, patting Neville on the shoulder. “Thanks, Harry,” Neville mumbled softly, true happiness in his eyes. Harry just smiled and said, “Glad I could help!” Neville's success just made Ron and Ginny work harder, and finally Ginny was able to produce the form of a small, round fluttering bird that zipped around the room a few times before vanishing.
“Oh, a Snidget!” said Ginny the moment it disappeared. It took Ron a few more minutes before a large form bounded from his wand tip. It was a medium sized Labrador that stood by Ron's side like a loyal friend. When it vanished, Ron was gaping in awe.
“I can't believe I did it!” Ron said in amazement staring at the spot where his Patronus disappeared. Harry laughed and patted him on the head as they walked form the Room of Requirement.
“Oh, I believed in you Flamey Boy!” Harry said, still patting Ron's head as if he was a pampered pooch. “Hey, stop that!” Ron said, swatting Harry's hand away. They laughed when Ron glared at Harry angrily, his mind thinking of something to say.
“Don't pat me - erm - Scar!” Ron said a triumphant look in his eyes. Harry smirked. “Scar?” he said humorously before something clicked in his head. “Hey! That's a good idea!” When the others looked at him with confusion, he grinned.
“We should give each other a nickname!” he said happily. Hermione's eyes glittered. “Like the Marauders?” she said lightly. Harry grinned and nodded. “Ron can be Flame and I can be Scar. And - umm, Ginny, she can be Swift because her Animagus form is fast!” Harry said quickly. Ginny raised an eyebrow. “Swift? I like it!”
“Luna can be Dream!” Ron said suddenly, looking at his girlfriend with bright eyes. Luna merely nodded, smiling vacantly. “And Hermione and Neville?” Ginny asked. There was silence as they surveyed the last two members without a name.
“Neville can be Moss, because he likes Herbology!” said Hermione suddenly. The others agreed on it. Now there was just Hermione left. They were standing at the top of one of the staircases, one way leading to Gryffindor Tower and the other to the Ravenclaw Common Room.
“Page!” said Harry, breaking the thoughtful silence. Hermione grinned at him as Ron said, “I was thinking about something like that. Except I was going to say book or shelf or something!” They laughed as Hermione hit Ron. They said goodnight to Luna, with Ron giving her a goodnight kiss. Ginny teased Ron all the way up to the Common Room, reminding Harry about something.
“Hey, what about Draco? He needs a name!” Harry said as they sat down in armchairs around the fire. “What about prat or git?” said Ron, although Harry knew he was just joking. He and the Slytherin boy had became friends in the holidays, even though both were determined not to admit it.
“What about Dart or Ice or something like that?” said Hermione after a while. “No, he will want something more masculine, you know how he's like!” said Ginny slowly. “How about we just ask him what he wants to be called, that way he can't curse us for picking something he hates?”
“Yeah, that probably is a good idea,” Harry said. “How come I couldn't pick my own name?” Ron said loudly. Harry turned to him and smirked. “Because the owner usually names the pet! Come here, Flame, come here boy!” Harry said as the others laughed. Ron grew red and glared at him before taking up a thoughtful look.
“I could be called Spike or Killer or something?” he said a moment later. “Yeah, then you sound more like a dog. Anyway, Flame's a good name!” Neville said suddenly.
Ron sighed in defeat. “Yeah, I suppose…”
oOoOoOo
Hey everyone, this one is a bit longer. It's just that I can't think of what to put in the chapters any more. But the next chapter will be longer, I promise. Also, if anyone could come up with a name for Draco being a silver dragon? I can't think of one that's appropriate for him. Thanks to everyone who reviewed and please review once more!
