Chapter 6

“Will she be okay?” Harry asked the healer as he came into the room to check on Hermione. He'd been sitting in the chair beside her bed for the last two days holding her hand and willing her to wake up.

“Yes she'll come around. Just you stay with her Harry,” he instructed him. Of course he wasn't going to leave her, he couldn't. The poor girl had almost died for heavens sake. Harry had learned from the healer when he got there that Hermione had a severe case of depression and had attempted suicide without even knowing she was actually doing it. The healer had told him that her depression had got so bad that her thoughts were all that were keeping her alive. He said that when that happened every thought she had was what actually happened, so when she'd lost hope her body had just fallen to the floor and she would have left it had they not gotten her to St. Mungo's when they did. He'd been told that she was now fighting a battle inside herself to comeback.

Hermione's parents were here now, he waved them in. “How's she going?” Mrs Granger asked Harry.

“Hi Mr and Mrs Granger, she's going okay. Nothings changed but the healers think she'll come out of it,” he told them. Both of them took a seat on either side of Hermione.

“What'll happen after she wakes up?” Mr Granger inquired.

“Oh, well she'll have to stay in here for a little while afterwards so they can monitor her. I'll be staying with her too in case she falls back into it again,” he explained to her parents. “I'm really sorry it happened. It's just that…,” he began but was stop by Mrs Granger.

“We know Harry,” she told him. “You just stay with her. As long as you're here she'll come out of it. We know she will.” Harry nodded knowing that it was true. He'd been told enough times that it was important he be there all the time. The healers brought in food for him and feed Hermione too. He remembered being told that it had all been made worse because Hermione hadn't been eating. He promised himself that when she woke up he'd watch her all the time. He'd make sure she knew he was there for her all the time. He had the mirrors with him and he knew that he'd give her the mirror as soon as she woke up. He couldn't bear to lose her. His life had frozen when Dumbledore had told him that Hermione was at St. Mungo's. The second he'd heard the words he knew something horrible had happened. He'd never thought that what Dumbledore had said was true. He'd just thought she'd miss him but not that anything like this would happen.

The six of them were sitting in the living room waiting for Dumbledore. He'd told them that he needed to discuss what was going to happen now. They hadn't been able to do any training and school was going back next week. “Hello,” Dumbledore said as he entered the room and came and sat in the armchair in front of the fireplace. The six of them stopped their conversation immediately. Dumbledore smiled at them “She's doing alright,” he told them knowing exactly what their conversation was about.

“Is she awake yet?” Ron asked.

“No not yet, though the healers say she will be soon,” Dumbledore answered the boy. “As you all know Hermione is in St. Mungo's at the moment and can't be here to participate in the training. As school will be starting soon I have decided that we can't do the training, therefore I will ask you to go through the books that I brought for you all at Diagon Alley and work through them,” he explained. “You are to use the room of requirement for your training,” he told them and pulled out a set of six silver sickles which he passed to them. “These can be used to set a meeting time. Those of you who were in the DA last year will know how they work,” he said nodding at Ron, Luna and Neville. “The way you change the date and time is in this book,” he explained and held up the charms book he'd given them all. They all nodded. “When the date is changed the coin heats up,” he told them and leaned back in his chair. “Now, Harry and Hermione will be returning to Hogwarts as soon as Hermione is well enough and I think it would be best if you didn't start training until they got back. As there won't be any training you can all return to your homes if you wish,” he finished.

“How long will it be before Hermione is able to come back?” Ginny asked Dumbledore as he got up to leave.

Dumbledore sat back down and looked at Ginny. “She needs to be on observation for three weeks to make sure that she is alright,” he told the girl and got up and left.

“Harry, do you still want to go into the battle alone?” Dumbledore asked as he came and sat next to him.

Harry looked up, he hadn't even noticed Dumbledore come in. “Well I can't can I,” he answered. “I mean I did it because I thought I was saving her but she'll die if I leave her,” he explained.

“Yes,” Dumbledore nodded. “Hermione doesn't have to die though,” he told him.

“Yes she does, you said some would die, and Voldemort always kills those I love most, my parents and now Sirius. I love Hermione and he'll come after her because of it.”

Dumbledore looked up at him. “Harry, I said some might die. If you fight with the group then there is a chance of her survival, if you go against it, it's almost certain that both of you will die,” he explained.

Harry nodded he knew that it was true he had to fight with the group so that she'd at least have a chance of surviving. “What's happening with the training?” he asked.

“It's not happening Harry,” he said and looked up at the boy. Seeing Harry's concerned look he continued “I can't run the training with only six, however I brought them all a set of books when we where at Diagon Alley and I have told them to work through those,” he explained. “They have all been given silver sickles to organise meetings in the room of requirement. Here are the two for you and Hermione,” he showed him the two coins he'd pulled out from his coat. “You know how they work,” he said and got up to leave.

“It looks like she might come out of it this time,” the healer told Harry as he attached the potion bag to the feeder. “You call me when it's all gone and I'll see if we can wake her,” he instructed Harry and left.

“Hello Mr and Mrs Granger,” Dumbledore greeted as he sat down on the sofa in the living room of Grimmauld Place. “I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to speak with you until now,” he apologised and poured some tea for the Grangers. “I trust Martin informed you of what has happened to Hermione,” he said as he passed them the tea.

“Oh yes, he's explained it as best as he can. It's just that with us being muggle it's hard for us to understand how it all works and how something like that can happen,” Mrs Granger explained.

Dumbledore nodded, “Yes I expect it would be rather hard to understand,” he agreed. “Hermione's case is quiet unusual,” he went on. “Normally a young witch's magic isn't powerful enough for such a thing to occur. However Hermione has always been an extraordinary young witch. From what Martin was able to tell me she has an ancient gift which has allowed her magic to be incredibly powerful,” he started to explain. “I am researching exactly what it is now. I am quite sure however that it has something to do with her relationship with young Harry. As you know Harry is a rather important person in the wizarding world, and has always been perceived as being quite powerful,” Dumbledore informed them. “I think that as it was possible for Voldemort to transfer some of his power to Harry that Hermione's relationship with him has allowed him to unknowingly transfer some of his power to her,” Dumbledore explained. Seeing the worried look on the Grangers faces he continued “I don't know exactly what this may mean however it shouldn't put Hermione in any danger or at least none that she wouldn't be in anyway.”

“Is Hermione in danger?” Mrs. Granger inquired.

“Well it is possible that she is, however it isn't because of her gift, and she would have been in the danger anyway,” Dumbledore answered. “Voldemort has always killed those people who Harry loves and Hermione is one of them,” he explained. “As you know Harry tried to stop his feelings for her and cut himself off from her however because of that this has happened. Harry is discovering that there is no way of running away from all of this,” Dumbledore explained.

“Oh yes of course. Thanks for meeting with us and explaining what is going on to us,” Mrs. Granger said and got up and left the room shortly followed by her husband.

“Martin,” Harry called as he saw him go up the hall. Hermione's potion had finished sometime ago but he didn't know how he was supposed to tell Martin without leaving her.

“Yes Harry?” Martin asked as he stuck his head in the door.

“Ah, the potions finished,” he told Martin.

“Oh yes, well shall we see if we can wake her then?” he asked Harry as he walked over. Harry just nodded in response. “Alright then let's see,” he said and began muttering the charm that they'd used over and over again to try and wake Hermione. After Martin had finished they waited for a few minutes to see if anything would happen. “Oh well maybe next time,” Martin sighed and turned to leave. As he reached the door Harry felt Hermione's hand move a little in his.

“Wait,” he called and Martin turned back towards him. “I felt her hand move,” he explained.

Martin had a look at her chart and it indeed indicated that the girl was at least a little closer to coming back then she was a moment ago. “Alright let's try one more spell and see if it'll bring her out,” he said and began performing the spell. This time they didn't have to wait long for a sign of life from Hermione, as only a few moments after Martin finished casting the spell Hermione's eyes flickered open and shut for a while until she was able to keep them open.

“Hi Hermione,” Harry said when her eyes had adjusted. “Your alright now, I'm here for you,” he told her and then turned to Martin.

“It worked,” he exclaimed. “I thought she'd come out of it soon. Well Harry both of you will need to stay here for three weeks more. I'll go inform her parents and Dumbledore that she's awake,” he informed Harry and left.

“You alright?” Harry asked as Martin left.

Hermione smiled at him. “Yes I'm fine. What happened?” she asked him.

“You passed out. You've been in a coma for about a week now, Martin will explain what happened to you later,” he informed her. She nodded and lay back down.

“She'll be okay now,” Martin told Harry upon seeing his worried look when Hermione had fallen back asleep. “She just needs to sleep now. I've told the others and their on their way now. You just stay with her for now. She'll be fine,” he told him and left the room.

***

“Can we come too?” Ginny asked as Dumbledore rushed around trying to get everything prepared so they could go to St. Mungo's.

“No, not today. You can all come and see her later. We don't want to crowd her,” Dumbledore told her.

“But we'll be back at school tomorrow,” Ginny pleaded.

“Yes I know. I'll organise for you to visit her on the weekend,” he explained and headed over to the fireplace where the Grangers where waiting.

Ginny nodded at let them go. She headed back to the room where the others had been, and started working through the books Dumbledore had brought them.

“Hi Hermione, how are you going,” Mrs Granger asked her daughter as she entered the room where Hermione lay on the bed.

Hermione looked up and realised it was her mother. “I'm fine mum,” she answered. “It's alright mum, don't worry I'll be fine. Harry's staying here until I get better so nothing can go wrong. Don't worry.”

“Yes your right dear, of course everything will be alright. We'll come and see you everyday,” her father told her and they left. They'd been told they could only see her for a short while because she'd only just woken up.

Shortly after the Grangers had left Dumbledore entered the room and sat down beside Hermione and Harry. “How are you doing?” he asked Hermione.

“I'm okay,” she told him as she sat up more comfortably.

Dumbledore looked at her and seeing she looked quite alright he continued “As you know you'll be spending another three weeks here. This will mean missing some school.” Hermione gasped at that.

“She's back to her normal self alright,” Harry laughed. Hermione just glared at him.

“Don't worry Hermione we've organised for your work from your classes to be sent to you. Harry I purchased your school books for you,” he told them both as he handed Harry a stack of books. Harry nodded and Dumbledore went on. “Well when you come back you can start the training, as I told you before Harry,” he told them nodding at Harry. “Anyway I must be getting back to Hogwarts,” he told them. Both Harry and Hermione nodded and Dumbledore got up and left the room.

Hermione lay back down and started to drift off to sleep. Harry sensed her anxiety and smiled at her. “It'll be alright,” he whispered to her as she closed her eyes.
