Chapter 7

“Hurry up Ginny!” Ron called from the bottom of the stairs. “We're going to miss the train if you don't hurry up!” he told her and then headed back into the crowded kitchen to grab some breakfast.

Mrs Weasley glanced down at her watch and then exclaimed, “It's getting late. I'll go check on Ginny. Ron you go put your trunk in the car would you,” she instructed. Ron grabbed the keys and headed out to the car. It was the brand new one Percy had brought to apologise for what he'd done last year.

Ginny was lying on her bed crying. Mrs Weasley entered the room and noticed that Ginny was crying. “What's the matter darling?” she asked as she sat beside Ginny on the bed.

Ginny glanced up from the mound of pillows she'd been crying into. “Oh, it's nothing Mum you wouldn't understand,” she managed to stammer out. Mrs Weasley gazed around the room in the hope of finding some clue as to what had upset her daughter. Her eyes caught on a piece of parchment on the floor. Hmm, what's that? She thought as she bent down to pick it up. It was a very short note however as soon as she'd read it she understood exactly what had upset her daughter.

It was a note from Pansy Parkinson. Mrs Weasley knew that Pansy had explained to Ginny what had happened to her mother many years ago, and why she'd chosen to fight against Voldemort rather than for him. Although Molly knew this she was shocked by the few words in Pansy's letter.

Ginny,

They got dad. I'm not coming back. Sorry.

~Pansy

“Oh, Ginny, Pansy will be alright. Dumbledore will make sure of it,” she told her daughter as she pulled her closer to her.

“How Mum? What can he do to help her? Voldemort's after her. He knows she's an heir, he must. He'll come after all of us. We can't win the battle without her anyway. We may as well forget it all now. There's not much point trying if we're gonna fail,” she informed her mother.

“Don't say such things Ginny,” Mrs. Weasley rebuked her. “Dumbledore will protect her. I'm sure he has a plan to involve her in the final battle, and even if she can't be involved Voldemort doesn't know of this second prophecy. He is only coming after Pansy because her father has told her the truth about what happened to her mother and is started to break free of his hold on him,” she explained. “Never give up on anything Ginny. There is always a way to achieve what you want. Pansy will get in contact with you as soon as she can but until then you'll have to try not to worry about it. Pansy will be fine, trust me darling,” she comforted her daughter and smiled. Ginny smiled back. She knew her mum was right. As long as Dumbledore was in control of the situation Pansy would be fine. “Come on now, we're running late.”

Ginny nodded, “My trunks packed,” she said and pointed to the trunk lying at the foot of her bed. “I'll be down in a moment,” she told her mum as she left the room and headed to the bathroom to dry her tears.

“What's up Ginny?” Ron asked as they neared the station.

Ginny lifted her gaze from the ground and looked at Ron. “Oh, nothing I'm fine. Just feeling a bit sick that's all,” she lied.

“Well you should ask mum for a potion then. Wouldn't want you to be sick before we even get back to school,” he told her as they pulled into the station car park.

“I'll be…” she began but was cut of by the arrival at the station.

“Alright here we are,” Mrs Weasley called out as she parked the car. Ron jumped out of the car and went to get his trunk out. Mrs Weasley turned to Ginny, “You going to be alright?” she inquired. Ginny didn't answer, just continued staring at the floor. “Do you want me to organise for you to see Dumbledore once you get to school?” she asked seeing the sadness in Ginny's eyes.

“Oh could you do that mum?” Ginny asked smiling.

“Of course I can. Don't you worry about it. I know this has upset you a fair bit, and if it'll make you well better I'll organise it,” she told her daughter and gave her a hug. “Now come on you'll be late.”

“There she is! Ginny! Over here!” Luna yelled out across the busy platform. Ginny spun around after hearing her name and glanced around the platform to see who had called her name. “Ginny!” Luna called and waved at her. Ginny saw Luna that time and raced over to her. “Hey Ginny,” Luna greeted as Ginny arrived and joined the group. “We're in the first compartment in this carriage,” she told her as she pointed to the carriage behind her. Ginny nodded and headed towards the train. “Alright we're almost all here,” Luna remarked. “Just waiting on Pansy. She better hurry up. She'll miss the train if she's not careful,” Luna exclaimed as she realise the train was due to leave in five minutes.

“Pansy's not coming,” Ginny informed them as she arrived back on the platform.

Luna stared at her. “What do you mean she's not coming? Why wouldn't she?” she asked.

“She just can't at the moment,” Ginny answered. Luna looked at her questioningly. “Its kindda complicated. I'll explain later. Let's get on the train though before it leaves,” she told them and headed back to their compartment.

“How you feeling?” Harry asked Hermione as she slowly sat up in her bed at St. Mungo's.

Hermione smiled at him, “I'm fine; Feeling much better than before.”

“That's good. You think you'll feel up to a walk this arvo?” he inquired. He wanted to talk to her about everything that had gone on in the last two weeks, and also the fact that it now appeared to him that he had a girlfriend. He'd liked Hermione for awhile now but it scared him that she loved him so much that all this happened. The healers had told him it was pretty rare for this to happen to anyone so young. They were really surprised when they found out Hermione was only fifteen.

“Yes, I think so,” she nodded.

Dumbledore had just received an owl from Mrs. Weasley when there was a knock at his door. “Come in,” he called and continued to read the letter. “Hello Miss Parkinson,” he greeted as he folded up the letter and returned to his desk. “Take a seat,” he instructed. Pansy pulled up the armchair in front of his desk and sat down. “Well Miss Parkinson it seems we need to find somewhere safe for you to stay for awhile,” he informed her. Pansy nodded, she knew she was in danger now. Voldemort knew her dad had broken his allegiance to him and told Pansy the truth about her mother's death, Pansy could only assume he would come after her too. “Well you have two options,” Dumbledore continued as he glanced down at the parchment on his desk. “You can stay within the castle in one of the hidden rooms; however you wouldn't be able to leave there in case someone saw you.” Pansy nodded and Dumbledore went on, “or we can use the Findellus charm. Same situation as if you stay in the castle in that you won't be able to leave but provided you pick a safe person as your secret keeper you would be safe there,” Dumbledore informed her and took a sip from his water. “The only problem we have is the fact that you can't leave the place you chose to stay. You are a key person in the battle plans against Voldemort. I will tell you the same as I told Harry, if we lose any of the eight than our plans won't work. We have alternatives of course however it doesn't fit in with the prophecy.”

“It's not my fault,” Pansy exclaimed. “I can't help it that he killed my parents and he's coming after me.” Tears began streaming down her face. She hadn't yet had time for the grief to sink in but as soon as she said those words the truth of it all had hit her.

Dumbledore got up from his desk and moved over to her. “Pansy, I know it's not your fault that all this has happened. I wouldn't even dare to think of blaming you for it.” Dumbledore sat down in the armchair next to her and handed her a handkerchief.

“Thankyou,” she stammered as she took the handkerchief from Dumbledore.

Dumbledore waited for Pansy to calm down before he continued. “What has happened is just a disruption to our plans. Yes we have had many but there is always a way to fix these things,” he explained. “Firstly we need to make sure you are safe. Would you rather stay in the castle or at home?” he asked her.

Pansy thought for awhile. “Here,” she eventually answered. “I can't stay at home on my own. They killed dad there. I'd get too upset,” she told him. Dumbledore nodded.

“Alright well we best get you set up before the students arrive,” Dumbledore told her and pointed towards a portrait next to the door. “You can stay in that room,” he said. “The passwords `Fawkes'. It's just like your common room. I'll have meals brought up to you. Just remember you can't leave the room, and you can't communicate with anyone,” he reminded her and ushered her towards the painting. “I'll organise classes for you and anything else you need just tell me,” he explained to her as he said the password and allowed her into her new home.

“What's going on Ginny? Why isn't Pansy coming?” Luna asked after they'd all settled down in their compartment of the train.

Ginny shifted in her seat. She didn't know what to tell them. She couldn't tell the whole story just yet. She didn't even know the whole story, though to even start on the death of her father she'd have to tell the story of Pansy's mother's death. “I'm not really sure exactly. I got an owl from her this morning,” she told them.

“What did it say?” Luna pressed.

“It just said something about her dad and that she wasn't coming back,” she answered and slumped back in the seat. Luna stared at her, “I don't know what it's about. I just know something happened to her dad, alright just leave me alone,” Ginny replied angrily and stormed out of the carriage.

“She knows more than she's telling us,” Luna informed the others as Ginny slammed the compartment door shut.

Ron rolled his eyes “of course she does, but she's not gonna tell us yet, and I wouldn't cross Ginny when she's angry.”

Luna nodded “Any idea what it is Ron?”

“Nah wouldn't have a clue. She was upset before we got here but I have no idea what it could have been about. I guess about Pansy. Ginny's pretty good at hiding stuff that she doesn't want others to know,” he told them.

“Yeah,” Luna agreed. “I'll talk to her when we arrive,” she told them. “So what are you guys looking forward to about school this year?” she asked and the four of them began discuss the new school year.

“Harry, where are you taking me?”

“Just wait a minute you'll see,” Harry told her as he led her to the park just outside of St. Mungo's. “Here we are,” he informed her as they reached the apple tree. He set down the picnic basket and lay the blanket out on the ground underneath the tree. Hermione slowly sat down on the blanket while Harry set out the food.

“It's lovely out here,” Hermione commented.

Harry lay down the plate of sandwiches and looked up at her. “Yeah it is isn't it?” Hermione nodded and picked up one of the sandwiches. “Great view hey,” he told her. From where they sat they had a view of the whole park and the big lake on the outskirts of the town.

After they'd sat admiring the view and watching the ducks glide across the lake Hermione turned back to Harry and asked, “so, when are you gonna tell me why you brought me down here?”

Harry turned toward her and laughed, “you know me too well Hermione,” he commented.

Hermione smiled. “Well, are you going too tell me why or not?”

“I'd have thought you'd worked that out by now,” he said and then added “or don't you know me that well after all.”

“You want to talk about what happened last week,” she told him knowing she was right. Harry nodded and pulled out a small package from his pocket. Hermione took the parcel and slowly unwrapped it and saw the small two-way mirror Harry had brought in Diagon Alley.

“I have the other one,” he explained. “Now you'll never loss contact with me,” he told her.

“Harry, I'm fine. Please, you don't have to protect me. You have enough to worry about on your own. I can look after myself,” she told him and handed back the mirror.

“Keep it. I want you to,” he stated and handed it back to her. “Something could happen to you and I want to know your okay. I thought I wouldn't need Sirius's and it turns out I did. If I'd only used it he wouldn't have died. So don't tell me you don't need it Hermione. I don't want to lose you too,” he explained. Hermione nodded and put the mirror in her pocket. She knew that it was best to just go along with Harry. He'd suffered so much loss in his life. If he wanted to protect her she had no choice but to let him. He had a very good argument.
