Chapter One-The Brightest Light in a Sky so Dark

An owl soared over the roof tops of Privet Drive, finally deciding upon house number four to fly to, her snowy white feathers, glowing in the night sky. She flew through the window of the smallest bedroom and landed upon a black-haired boys shoulder. He was sitting on his bed staring into nothing-ness, deep in thought. She pecked him sharply on his cheek, awakening him from his mind. He reached out to his owl, patting her softly on her back, and removing the letter clasped in her claws. The owl glided a short distance to a cage perched on a small desk, clearly wanting water. He unrolled the parchment carefully, reading the letter with slowness. It was from his best friend Ron Weasley, saying the same things as always. Asking him how he was, not to blame him-self and to stay where he was. All the letters he had received during his time in Privet Drive were the same. Except one. Hermione Granger, his other best friend, didn't say these things, she said things like: I know how you feel, so I don't need to ask. I know the others have told you to stay where you are, so I won't bother. She told him how her summer has been, saying she went on a vacation, and how she was missing him.

Just her saying these things made him think less of the previous year. How his god-father, Sirius Black, had died. Died trying to save Harry, who was trying to save him. The prophecy that was written about Harry and Lord Voldemort. Saying that one must defeat the other, or none could live or survive. Harry had tried not to think about it. He had completed his home-work in the first few weeks of the holidays, not sleeping, for fear of seeing Sirius's limp form falling continuously through the Veil. He did all the house work with out complaints, even though he didn't have half the work he used to, since the talk some of the Order members had with his relatives. He had tried to rid his mind of the thoughts plaguing him everyday. He tried to forget the hollow face of Sirius's killer, Bellatrix Lestrange. But he couldn't forget her. If he did, he was scared he'd forget Sirius, who was like the father he never knew, and the brother he never had.

Harry scrunched up the parchment in his fist, throwing it out the window opposite him. He swiped his face, brushing away the tear trickling down his face. He stood so suddenly his owl, Hedwig, jumped off her perch, hooting angrily. He started pacing across his room, his eyes closed, not needing to see where he was going, as he'd trodden in the same path every night for the past four weeks. There was only a few days left until his sixteenth birthday, not like he cared. All he wanted was Sirius back. He'd give away everything to see the large black dog once more, to hear his booming laugh, like a bark. In his anger he grabbed the lamp of his desk, and pelted it at the ground, shattering the light bulb inside it.

This was just one of the many things that he'd destroyed in his anger, his emotions the cause of his anger. He continued on his pacing, back and forwards through the dark, not stopping, ever. There was a rustling of feathers as the second owl flew through his window, landing with a thump on his bed. Harry stopped his pacing and removed the letter clasped in its talons, noticing through the dark the Hogwarts seal; he realized it was thicker than usual. When the thought struck him. His OWL results must be included, not that he mattered, he wouldn't pass Potions, meaning his dreams of becoming an Auror were wasted. He wished he hadn't broken his lamp as he tried to make his way across the room, groping for the light switch. He felt an immediate pain in his left foot as he heard something crunch. He felt the switch under his finger tips, flicking it on, causing Harry's eyes to blur for a second. When all came focused he looked down, where a cut on the bottom of his foot was leaking blood onto the carpet. He limped over to his bed, not wanting to seep more blood onto the Dursleys carpet. Not caring about his injury, he ripped open the letter, pulling out three bits of parchment. One was the usual notice for the train, the other the book lists, which left one. He put the others down beside him, not removing his gaze from the folded parchment. He opened it gently, peering at the official looking writing.

Congratulations! You have passed the required amount of OWLs to commence with your occupation: AUROR

Professor Minerva McGonagall

Deputy Headmistress

Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry'

He did it, but how? He didn't pass potions, so how could he commence with being an Auror? The thought was driven from his mind as the third owl that night fluttered through the window, landing on the two other Hogwarts letters. He sat down his OWL results, and picked up the latest letter, it was from Hermione.

`Dear Harry

I just got my OWL results, I can't believe it! Have you got yours? Oh, I can't wait to see you again!

Love Hermione'

Harry smiled slightly, remembering Hermione's nervousness to take the exams and the longing to get the results earlier. He stifled a yawn and moved over to his window again, staring out into the black night sky. The stars sparkled innocently from above, not knowing what was going on below, not having a care in the world. Harry stared up at the lights in the sky shining down upon the world, remembering the prophecy and what he had to do, he found the brightest star in the sky, the one called Sirius, and he spoke out into the night sky.

“Sirius, I need you now, why did you leave me?” A few sparkling tears ran down his cheeks, as he looked out at the brightest light in a sky so dark.
