Chapter Eleven- Mysteries Unsolved
`Erm………what?' stammered Harry at the figure before him.
`She coming for him, when five moons pass,' said the centaur before Harry, his majestic eyes flashing. Harry backed up.
`What do you mean, she's coming for him? Who's she, who's him?' he asked getting frightened and curious now. `I can not tell you, but I think you already know. Beware, Harry Potter, as she is coming,' said Firenze walking out of the class room door, leaving a bewildered Harry behind. After retelling his events with Ron and Hermione, they both looked as confused as he was.
`We obviously know who she is, that's Avlantia, but who is he?' this question was playing around in their minds after Hermione said it, causing them to lose concentration in the day's classes. In Defense Against the dark Arts the professor was half an hour late and just assigned them to read from their text books. Professor Rohain' actions to Harry had startled the trio and so they began to try and figure out why he had acted so abrupt. Harry trudged along the dungeons almost a week later, clearly wanting to be any where than here. He knocked on the door of Snape's office before he was pulled inside by Professor Snape. The potions master had been exceptionally cold to Harry since the incident in the holidays, which consisted of him springing hard questions on him during class, causing him to upset his potion. This night was no exception. They stood a few feet apart, both glaring at each other, when Snape entered his mind using Legiliumcy. Bits of his memories flashed through Harry's mind, but when the picture of Sirius falling through the veil began to play in his mind, he'd had enough. He forced Snape out of his head, pushing with him a spell of his own.
Snape was blasted into the wall opposite him, the cabinet toppling on top of him. Jars smashed upon his head, eye balls rolled across the ground, escaping from their glass prisons. Snape immediately stood, swiping of glass shades from his robes and water from his greasy hair. He shot a death glare at Harry who was looking very smug indeed.
`Better, Potter. But do try to and push me out at the start, not when I get to a memory you don't want me to see, Legiliums!' Harry was ready for that attack so he immediately put up a mind shield like he practiced with Maizy. Professor Snape was looking quite confused at not being allowed into his mind, so he tried again, harder this time. Still he wasn't able to break Harry's barrier. At the end of the hour and a half Harry was strolling through the darkness back to the common room, happy for once coming back from Snape's office. Once in bed he went through the weeks events in his head. What was Firenze talking about? Who was Avlantia coming for, and why was he all of a sudden throwing a Hermione in class, becoming all smart. He soon drifted into a deep sleep, replaying the image of Snape smashing into the wall, the eye balls rolling away from him.
They had Quidditch practice the following afternoon, which went on fine. The first match of the year would be in three weeks, against Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, which was an easy win. This year's Gryffindor was great, the chasers all got along well and co-operated together good, Ron was much more confident than the previous year, as he always took the Slytherin's comments to heart, now he just shrugged them off. The beaters were great as well, firing bludgers at their targets and hitting them dead on. Harry was the same as always; loving to be in the air and feeling free. Hermione occasionally came down to watch their training but always brought homework with her. Soon it was the first night for the dueling contest where they would assign everyone their partners and find out when they were fighting.
Harry, Ron and Hermione were standing in the Great hall, where all the tables had been pushed against a wall, leaving large amounts of room. When everyone was gathered inside, it seemed as if the whole school had joined. A small platform had been placed at the end of the hall, where three teachers stood. The first was Professor Dumbledore smiling broadly down at his students, the next was Professor Rohain who was gazing up at the sky through the enchanted ceiling, and the third was Professor Snape who was glaring at the headmaster. Dumbledore cleared his throat, gaining silence from the crowd.
`Welcome to the first night of the Dueling Contest. Many of you are here to participate, but a lot of you are here to watch. If you aren't competing could you please go to the back of the hall, and the ones that are competing move to the front please,' there were many footsteps as at least half of the group parted and moved to the back of the hall and the others moved forward. `Now in these hats,' he held up two old wizards hats, much like the sorting hat, into the air, `are all the names of the people who wrote their names down on the lists. Every person who is competing will come forward and take a name out of the hat that is the person you will duel against in the first round. There are age limits, first through to third years will duel in just that group, while fourth to seventh years will be in that group. If a first year draws out a third year student, be warned, you must compete against them, there are no changes. There are at least thirty-two students in each age group, so there will be five rounds. In each duel, the person who wins will move onto the next round, while the looser gets eliminated, that is if the person gets knocked off of the stage. Tonight we will get you all to draw your opponents out, then next Friday night will be the first round for the first group, comprised of the first through to third years. Then the Friday after that will be the first round for the second group, the fourth through to seventh years.
`I believe there are only a couple of first years here so they must be warned that you have to compete against who you draw out even if it is a third year. If you pull out of the draw, you will be eliminated and your opponent will move to the next round. Now, would the first to third years follow Professor Rohain to the left side of the hall to pull you opponents out, and would the other years go with Professor Snape to the right hand side please.' All the students moved to the allocated sides, lining up behind the hat, `There is a spell on the hat that prevents you from pulling your own name out, also it goes in alphabetical order, the teacher controlling the hat with call out who is next. If you have already been chosen by somebody else, please move to the side the hat will call out who you get so that person can move aside.' announced the headmaster from the podium.
The lines shortened and soon Harry was called up, haven't been chosen yet, he glared at Snape before placing his hand into the hat and clasping a piece of parchment. He pulled it out and read it. Harry laughed out loud, and passed the parchment to Snape, shaking his head the hat called out, CHO CHANG! Harry laughed and moved back to Hermione who had been chosen by Colin Creevely. Hermione smiled innocently at him as she had heard the hat yell out his opponent. He just smiled back, feeling he was already in the next round. They heard the hat yell out Ron's name as they spotted him walking swiftly towards them his face set in anger.
`Guess who pulled me out, just guess!' he said, when they just shrugged he answered, `Ernie Macmillan, him of all people, that pompous little-` he wasn't able to finish what he was saying as Cho Chang appeared right beside him. He glanced nervously at her before moving next to Harry, so he was facing her.
`Hello Harry,' she said sweetly, smiling beautifully, `Hi,' answered Harry back, `so, we're dueling against each other,' she said, `Yeah, I know, I pulled your name out so I know,' he said plainly. Her smile faltered a bit but she continued, `Listen could I talk to you, in private,' she added looking at Hermione disgustedly. `Fine,' he answered following her to a corner, `what did you want to talk about Cho?' he asked idly, wanting to be elsewhere. She stepped closer to him, staring into his eyes and taking his hand in hers.
`I want to give it another go, I mean, you and me. I was out of line last year, and I like you, I like you a lot and I think you like me to,' Harry pulled her hands of his own and stepped away shaking his head. `No, I don't, I was the one out of line last year, and I should've seen that you only wanted to be around me to remind you of Cedric. And I need something more than that, you do to,' silent tears trickled down Cho's cheeks and her eyes flashed at him, then to the direction of where Hermione and Ron were standing talking. She stepped away from him and swiped away her tears. `I knew it, I KNEW IT!' she roared, so everyone in the hall turned to them, `EVEN LAST YEAR, even last year I knew. I knew that you and………and HER were together!' Harry backed up and started walking away, saying over his shoulder, `I don't know what you're talking about Cho, but me and Hermione are just friends,'
`Oh yeah, than how'd you know I was talking about precious Hermione, huh, how'd you know?' Harry turned to face her, now about ten feet away. `I knew because you've always been jealous of her, of our friendship and because of that you're blaming her because I don't like you. But the truth is I had a crush on you for a year or two, but that's all it was a crush. And I'm over you know, so you should move on,' Harry turned to face the podium and walked towards it, being followed by Ron and Hermione. Harry sighed once everyone began talking again, mostly of the ordeal that just took place. Hermione placed a hand on his shoulder so he faced her.
`Thank you Harry,' she said, `For what?' asked Harry, confused. `For everything, just everything,' Harry still didn't know what was going on but nodded none the less, and turned his attention to the podium where professor Dumbledore was announcing all the dueling partners for the first and second groups for the first round. The school was in a knot of excitement the following Friday with the first round for the first group taking place that night. The platform at the front had been raised so it was about two metres off the ground, with a small set of stairs on one side. The hall had been enlarged so the entire school could sit or stand comfortably while the duel took place before them. The participants for the first group stood up the front to the right-hand side, ready to enter onto the stage when it was their turn to duel. Harry Ron and Hermione stood at the front gazing up at the headmaster who just moved upon the stage.
`Welcome one and all to the first round for the first group of the Hogwarts Dueling Contest. First up we have Jonathon Atkins verses Guy Taylor, please make your way up please,' a small first year walked up onto the stage followed by a tall second year, `You may take your marks then begin when I say so,' the two duelers took their marks, standing a few metres away, wands a-ready and glaring at each other. `GO!' shouted Professor Rohain taking over from Dumbledore. The two begin firing spells at each other, mostly stunners and disarming spells, but the second year was far more advanced than the first year and soon knocked the first year over but not of the stage. But he thought he had knocked him off and lowered his wand turning around, getting hit by a stunner and toppling forwards and of the stage. The crowd cheered as the small first year strolled off the stage, by the stairs. The second year was awoken from the spell and looked around disgruntled, but then realized that he'd lost. He stalked off into the crowd, his head hung low. It continued like that for almost three hours, most of the duels ranging from a few minutes to about twenty minutes by two third years. Soon it was over, with about sixteen students left to move onto the next round.
`Thank you for coming, these are the students who have made it to the second round,' professor Rohain then named all the students who won their duels, `please come back next week for our first round for the second group, the fourth through to seventh years.' then all the students began moving out back to their dormitories, most of them talking about the duels that had taken place, but some talking about the next weeks contest. The next morning professor Dumbledore called Harry Ron and Hermione into his office during breakfast.
`The reason I called you three up here is two reasons, firstly, Ron,' Ron looked up curiously, `Have you had any dreams on returning to Hogwarts?' the professor asked politely, Ron seemed to be thinking, `No' he replied happily. `Good, good, that's all in order,'
`How?' blurted Ron, gaining a small smile from the headmaster. `Well I went to the Ministry and inspected the brain tanks in the Inquisitory Room, and found out how to stop the dreams from reaching you. I destroyed the brain which happened to infect you.' Ron nodded slowly, `Thanks,' he murmured, `No problem, the second is you, Harry. How are you coping with everything? I've heard you are doing great in your classes and in the extra training you all have been getting?' Harry smiled up at his headmaster, `Yes, sir. I've been doing well in class and am coping well with………with everything,' he ended not really wanting to say his godfather's name. Dumbledore nodded sincerely, `Well I'll let you get back to your classes, and good luck with the dueling contest,' the three then walked out wandering to charms. The days passed quickly, with Snape still confused at Harry's Occlumency skills and the trio's extra training, which was coming on fine.
They all were standing in the great hall once more, but this time the people up the front to the right consisted of Harry, Ron and Hermione. They all had butterflies in their stomachs and Ron looked as if he was about to belch up some slugs. Hermione was muttering spells under her breath and ticking them off on her fingers, but Harry was just standing quite still and relaxed, looking up at the enchanted ceiling. The hall fell silent as Dumbledore stood atop the stadium a twinkling in his eyes.
`Welcome to the first round of the second group, first up we have Lucy Anderson versus Dean Thomas, please make your way onto the stage!' the two contestants walked up to the stage as the headmaster descended. They began to duel and soon Lucy Anderson toppled over the edge leaving a smiling Dean at the top. Next were Terry Boot and Sandy Raven, ending up with Sandy winning. It continued this way for some time until Hermione was called up. Colin was looking extremely nervous and kept dropping his wand as they took their stance and faced one another. Colin was unable to fire his first spell as Hermione blasted him with a stunner sending his flying off the platform and onto a conjured cushion. Draco Malfoy was the next best, having to verse a skinny seventh year who was smaller than him. He sent her flying into the ground off the platform in a manner of minutes. Ron and Ernie Macmillan were up next. Ron managed to send a spurt of water at him causing him to drop his wand in surprise, but when Ron stepped forward to blast him, he slipped on his puddle of water, sending him sliding into Ernie and knocking him off the platform. A few people laughed at Ron's luck, but he laughed the hardest joining Harry and Hermione in the small crowd.
`Next up we have Harry Potter and Cho Chang,' Harry's heart skipped as he stepped up onto the platform, followed by Cho who was smiling strangely. Harry took his stance and faced Cho, his wand ready in front of him. At Dumbledore's signal he sent a stunner at Cho, who blocked it easily. She sent a disarming spell at him.
`Protego!' he shouted scratching the air. He blocked it while sending a jelly-leg jinx at her, just as she sent the body binding spell. The two spells hit, exploding with a puff of violet smoke. Harry dived out of the way as Cho sent a fire ball at him. He shouted a reducto spell at her, catching her unawares and sending her back wards and off the platform. Harry smile triumphantly and jumped back down to the hall floor. Hermione smiled warmly at him while Ron patted him on the back. At the end of the night sixteen people were left over, the other sixteen skulking away in the large audience.
`That was it for the first round; please join us next week for the second round of the first group!' announced professor Rohain, ending the second night of the dueling contest. Harry, Ron and Hermione followed Ginny and Neville back up to the common room after the contest, chatting happily about the night's events when someone called out behind them. They turned around to see Professor Rohain standing uncomfortably next to a wall.
`Harry, could I talk to you please, privately,' he added noticing Harry's friends stepping towards him. Harry nodded at them, giving them permission to keep going Harry followed the professor into his office, shutting the door behind them. He ushered Harry into a seat and seated himself on his desk. `Look, I'm sorry about the other day in class, it's just, haven't seen that symbol for a very, very long time.' Harry nodded silently, wondering what was coming. `But, may I ask you a question?' Harry nodded once more. `How did you get it, I mean, Avlantia's mark?' He gulped at his professor's frightened but stern voice, echoing around the quiet room.
`I-I'm not quite sure. I was asleep, and I dreamt it-somehow,' he noticed professor Rohain's face drain of color and he immediately jumped off his desk and step closer. `This is really important to me. What did she say to you, tell me everything about her that you know?' Harry fidgeted a bit in his hard wooden chair, staring curiously up into his teacher's bright eyes, penetrating into his own. `Why?' he asked softly, never faltering his stare. Professor Rohain sighed and moved back to his desk, he removed his wand from his cloak and pointed it at the door and continued around the room, performing a silencing charm. Then continued his gaze at Harry.
`Will you please tell me what you know of Avlantia and of that burn? I have only seen that mark once, and that was a long, long time ago.' Harry felt that he should tell him, but didn't know why he felt this way. He nodded briefly then explained all that he knew of Avlantia, of her real identity and of his dreams. He told of her friends through Hogwarts and how she murdered her friend's family then vanished. When he finished his tale his professor's face looked grave.
`So, Abagale's back,' he stammered holding his shaking hand to his head, pushing his hair out of his face. `Where are you dear friend?' he seemed to ask himself, not realizing Harry was still there. Harry shuddered, `She's your friend?' he blurted out looking disgustedly up at Tyler Rohain. `No, she is not my friend; she was, but not any more. No, I was wondering where Ashir is, my dear brother.' Harry gaped at the man in front of him, putting two and two together.
`Your him, you're Tyson, his best friend!' he spluttered staring open mouthed at his teachers nodding head. `Yes, I am him, I have not gone by that name for almost thirty years,' Harry shook his head disbelievingly. `You can't be him, Professor Dumbledore said that you went to Hogwarts when he was a Charms professor, but that was like fifty years ago and you don't look fifty?' a small smile crept upon Tyler's lips, `Yes, very observant of you. You see, we were quite close, Ashir and I and I was the only one to know, apart from their family, that Ashir was an elf.' Harry gasped but continued listening, `One day we were wandering along the top of a cliff above a large river and Ashir slipped he fell into the water and almost drowned, I jumped in and saved him. And it is a custom in elf families if someone saves one of their own they present them with a gift and mine was to stay and protect Ashir forever, since elves are immortal.' Harry nodded thoughtfully, taking everything in. `But you must not tell anyone about who I really am, or anything what I have told you, as if Abagale knows I am here, she will come. You better get along to bed, as it quite late.' Harry nodded and left thanking him and making his way back to Gryffindor common room, his new information running through his mind.
Firenze's words also played through his thoughts, who was Avlantia coming for, and why did Tyson McCloud all of a sudden turn up after that many years? Harry was so absorbed in his thoughts he didn't notice a white mist floating across the floor at his feet, lurking up the corridor. He also didn't notice a body lying flat across the floor near a statue, their face blank. Or he didn't spot the bodies closed eyes flicker open, their pupils missing, their eyes plain white and staring, a wicked smile spreading across their lips.
