Chapter Ten- The New DADA Professor
Snape began yelling madly as the wolf snarled its teeth before him, golden eyes flashed menacingly. His hand dripped blood upon the cement floor from many teeth marks punctured by fangs. Suddenly the Potions Master collapsed, fast asleep. Harry bounded out of the door, jumped up the stairs and into Sirius's old room. He leapt onto the large bed back into his human form, panting madly. Anger flared inside him from the incident downstairs, sweat dripped down his cheeks, mingled with a solitary tear. His eyes glared at the wall in front of him trying to make his anger subside. The feeling of being an animal was great; it was as if he was free, free to do as he pleased. When he transformed and launched at Snape, it was as if knew everything, like he understood all the things in the world. His senses picked up many things. He smelt the fear on Snape as he sunk his teeth into him, he could here his heartbeat race against his rib cage, and he could taste the git's magical essence.
His anger began to rise again as he thought of what he said about him and Sirius. How dare he insult his godfather! He began taking deep breaths trying
to stay calm, but the only thing that could keep him calm now was to fly his broomstick. But he couldn't because that old hag Umbridge had it locked up in the dungeons at Hogwarts. An idea flickered into Harry's head. He raised himself off the bed and sat on the edge, thinking off his hawk form, wanting to be that hawk form. Suddenly he felt free again as he soared through the open window of Sirius's room and over the house tops. His eyes could spot many things from any height and he could hear many things as well, like he could here voices as he flew passed an open window of a muggle house. He could smell everything, even though he didn't know what the smells were he knew the difference between a human and animal, a muggle and wizard. He continued flying over roof tops, over houses and forests. He didn't know where he was going but he didn't care. He went into a dive, soaring to the ground at a tremendous speed, he pulled out easily barely a foot from the grass. He turned around and flew back the other way, heading back to Grimmauld Place. He passed other birds on his return journey; many flew at a wide distance from him. He could sense their fear.
Sirius's window came into view, but someone's form stood in his way, just staring at him. He could smell and see who it was, the person had a strawberry scent about them, as well as a rich smell of old paper. Hermione. She was looking sternly at him as he flew by her into the room. He landed on the bed in his human form, he smiled awkwardly at his best friend, but she wasn't smiling. She stormed over to him and wrapped him in a tight hug. Harry nervously patted her back, completely surprised. She pulled away, tears falling from her eyes. Harry opened his mouth to speak but she spoke first.
'Don't you ever, EVER do that to me again!' she said, 'I came up here to see how you were to find you gone. Professor Snape is lying downstairs fast asleep because you bit him with your poisoned fangs.' Harry grinned happily and was surprised to find a smile tugging at Hermione's lips. 'Don't think that's a good thing, because when he wakes up you're going to be in so much trouble.' She finally gave into the smile.
'It was worth it though!' Harry said happily. 'He continues to bad mouth Sirius even though he's dead,' Hermione smiled sympathetically. 'And he insults me for no reason!' he said trying to stay calm again. 'I had to get away. And the only thing that makes me feel better is flying and since I don't have my broomstick I thought that would be better and safer as no one knows that I'm an Animagus. Yet.' He added thoughtfully. They headed back downstairs and into the kitchen. Professor Snape was lying in the corner, his head on a pillow. Harry smiled triumphantly as he took his seat. Professor Dumbledore was sitting at the table, sipping tea out of a mug. He gave a short smile to Harry as he sat down.
'Harry, you have to take control of your emotions,' said Dumbledore, 'You gave Professor Snape enough venom to keep him asleep for about four hours at the least.' Harry tried hopelessly not to laugh, but stopped when Hermione elbowed him in the ribs. A slight twinkle appeared in the old mans eyes, 'I'm glad your able to transform so quickly, Harry. Now I believe your classes have been canceled today, Mr. Weasley is up stairs with his sister, if you would like to know.' The twinkle shone out again brighter this time. 'Thanks, sir.' said Harry as they left to go up stairs. Dinner that night was a joyous affair, with Mrs. Weasley cooking a scrumptious meal and Professor Snape still in a deep sleep in the corner of the kitchen. Fred and George had arrived home from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes bringing with them an assortment of their products. But as soon as they had entered The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black their mother blasted them with a lecture on misusing their jokes on members of the family, but after that it was rather funny. They told of a customer that came into the shop that day and eaten a piece of what they thought was ordinary Bubble Gum to find out it wasn't and inflate to the size of an elephant, and Fred and George just pushed them out the door saying they shouldn't steal.
The next morning bloomed all too early for Harry, who had to be awaken by Hermione shouting in his ear. He hadn't had any dreams since he got the burn which he was thankful for. It was the day they were returning to Hogwarts, now only four of them leaving to actually attend school, since the twins had left the previous year. Harry dragged him self out and quickly showered and dressed, dragging his ready packed trunk down stairs. There he met Dainin Strongfoot humming merrily and staring at the roof. He greeted Harry and handed him a sheet of parchment with different times marking when their training would be through Hogwarts, it only had about two months worth of classes.
'You all will be ready by then,' he said at Harry's confused look. There was a crash as Ron's trunk tumbled down the stairs with a startled Tonks standing at the top. 'Oops!' was all she said as she bounded down the stairs after it, scooping up the spilled contents and packing them back in the trunk. Ron came down a moment later looking confused as to why his trunk was already down here, Tonks said she brought it down causing Harry to unsuccessfully conceal his laughter. Tonks glared at him then smiled innocently back at the inconspicuous red head. The ministry cars pulled up outside Kings Cross at around ten-thirty, leaving them around half-an-hour to board the train. Moody took the front of the group his hat hiding his swivelling magical eye, then cam Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny followed by Tonks, Lupin and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley all looking around carefully for any suspicious peoples. They passed through the barrier two at a time with their trunks finally catching site of the scarlet steam engine. Harry felt a jolt in his stomach as the thought hit him that this was second last time he would be coming through the barrier as a Hogwarts student. They just stood on the platform talking about odd things, until it was about ten to eleven when they boarded the train. Harry looked out of the window at his guard, they smiled and waved casually, he couldn't see Tonks but thought she must have already left. The train began to move as Hermione and Ron left to the Prefects cabin leaving Harry alone. Neville joined him then Luna and Ginny. Neville told Harry how his grandmother was really proud of him for going to the Ministry and defending his friends and that his parents were still giving him chewing gum wrappers with letters on them. Luna told of how her and her had almost caught a Wobblegone Swamp Eater, causing Ginny to go a deep shade of red trying to keep her laughter in.
Hermione and Ron returned about half-way through the trip, telling them how Katie Bell had got Head Girl and Jason Foster, a Ravenclaw, had got Head Boy. The lunch lady came by selling almost all her cart to the occupants in Harry's compartment. Night fell as the train pulled to a halt at Hogsmeade station; the students began packing into the Thestral drawn carriages, the first years trailing behind the large form of Hagrid disappearing to the lake. The lights inside the castle shown out of the many windows in the darkness, illuminating the shadowy grounds and the small cabin which was Hagrid's home. The Great Hall was filled with floating candles and many students pointing to Harry, talking about last year at the Ministry, where rumours were created saying how he and Dumbledore had made a hologram of you- know-who in order to convince the ministry that they had been right all along. They slumped into their usual seats at the Gryffindor Table getting settled and ready for the sorting. Harry's eyes trailed along the Teachers Table briefly crossing Snape's eyes and smirking. They rested on an unfamiliar face sitting on the right of Dumbledore, his face turned up to the ceiling, staring into the enchanted night sky. He had scruffy black hair framing his features, his face was gaunt, his eyes pierced into Harry's, who hadn't realized that the teacher had looked down at him. He immediately looked away, turning to the stool Professor McGonagall just placed in front of the table, where the first years were milled, all looking nervous and anxious.
Soon the sorting was over, Gryffindor gaining twelve new first years, looking proud and excited. Professor Dumbledore stood and announced the feast, seating him self back down and beginning a conversation with the new professor. They piled there plates with food, eyes filled with a great yearning for the meal in front of them like they never had seen so much food before. Ron boar into his, stuffing his mouth with potato and chicken then reaching for some pork, his eyes alighting when he spotted a lone piece of pie sitting half under another plate. Harry began chewing on a piece of garlic bread, his eyes wandering over the students laughing and talking with happiness, not having to worry about what was to come. Dumbledore cleared the tables when everyone was done, standing in front of them all, a twinkle in his eyes.
'So we begin another year, filled with joy and laughter. Once again the Forbidden Forest is strictly as its name says, forbidden to all students. Mr. Filch has added a more items on the list in his office, I believe all from Fred and George Weasley's new store which is flourishing,' a few cheers emitted from the Gryffindor table from the twins friends, 'yes, yes. The rules addressed to the school last year by a former professor have been lifted, as have any bans,' his eyes trailed to Harry who was feeling extremely happy all of a sudden, 'Congratulations to our new Head Boy and Girl, Katie Bell from Gryffindor and Jason Foster of Ravenclaw, I'm sure they will do a great job! This year there will be a Dueling contest, to find the top dueler in Hogwarts. If you would like to enter there will be a list pinned up on the notice boards in each of you common rooms. They will be taken down at the end of the week, so try and get your name down by then if you will like to compete. The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher this year is Tyler Rohain,' Many students looked at the man beside Dumbledore, 'Now, I'm sure everyone is tired and wanting some rest, so you may go, Prefects take the first years and show them the way.' Harry began to stand with Hermione and Ron, who showed no movement of taking the first years.
'Don't you have to take the first years?' he asked yawning, 'Nope, the fifth year prefects have to do that, not us!' he said happily, ascending the stairs and beginning to whistle. Harry looked quizzically at Hermione who was staring nonplussed at Ron, 'What are you so happy about? Why are you whistling, you never whistle?' she stammered, 'Well Harry's back on the Quidditch Team, and we're sure to win this year!' they had just entered the common room and headed to the armchairs by the fire, 'And why is that?' she asked sitting down in an armchair, followed by Ron and Harry.
'Well, we need new players on the team, we need to replace the beaters, we need chasers since Katie will be too caught up in NEWTS and being Head Girl and all. And there's only me and Harry left, so of course Harry'll get captain' 'What! Me?' stuttered Harry, emitting a slight chuckle at the thought of him being captain of Gryffindor Quidditch Team. 'Yeah, you, I'd be no good at captain. I can't talk in front of people, but I'm good at strategies and stuff like that. So if you get captain, can I be the strategizer?!' he asked hopefully. Harry nodded numbly. 'And if I get captain, you can be the talker, ok?' Harry nodded again, thinking through what it would be like being Quidditch captain.
Harry took his timetable that Professor McGonagall handed him the next day at breakfast, and immediately wished he hadn't. In the first time slot taking up two periods was his least favorite subject, Potions. He and Hermione made their way down to the dungeons after breakfast, leaving Ron laughing at them. He didn't have to take Potions; instead he was going to Care of Magical Creatures with Dean and Seamus. Sitting at the back, Harry and Hermione unpacked their bags; they were the only Gryffindors attending NEWT Potions, so they were open to many insults and angry looks. They sat listening to Professor Snape.
'Newt level Potions is highly difficult, most in this class got in on talent, others got in by pure luck,' his eyes flashed at Harry, 'If those people continue being behind the class, I will have them kicked out of this class and never to return. Now, some revision questions Potter,' Harry inwardly groaned, 'What is the main acting ingredient in the Wolfbane Potion?' Harry knew this, 'Err...the petals of the Lunar Lily, only blooming on the night of a full moon, sir,' Snape's eyes flashed at him, 'What is the ingredient in the Invigoration Draught that acts as a potion when not boiled at the precise temperature and is a useful antidote when it comes to a bite from a spider?' Snape's face now possessed an evident smirk. Harry thought hard, going back to last year when they made that potion. Hermione's hand shot in the air, just as Harry answered, 'The blood from an adolescent Red Caps.' Hermione gasped from beside him, and Snape's smirk vanished. The rest of the lesson went on and on, with Snape asking everyone questions but none as hard as the ones Snape sprang on Harry, who got them all right. As the bell rang the potions master help Harry back. Hermione told him he'd wait out side the door, so Harry stayed back in the dungeon class room with Snape.
'Potter, I don't know how you answered all of my questions correctly, but beware, one slip up and you'll be out of here so fast that you on your broomstick would look like you weren't moving at all. You are to report here every Tuesday night for Remedial Potions, as the headmaster still has some hope in your skills, even though I don't see any skill in you at all. Go,' Harry smiled brightly opening the door, calling back, 'You shouldn't be so mean, sir, as you might be having another nap if you are.' Harry joined Hermione walking into the Great Hall.
'Harry, how'd you know all the answers to Snape's questions?' she asked once they seated them selves next to Ron who was stuffing him self with Shepard's Pie, barely acknowledging their presence. Harry shrugged, 'I studied over the summer, and I didn't want to be kicked out of Snape's class, because I need it to be an Auror. Anyway, you always get all Snape's questions right, so what's wrong with me?' he asked reaching for an apple. 'Nothing, it was just a surprise to hear you answer Snape correctly all lesson, that's all.' She answered reaching for a sandwich. After lunch they had Charms than Defense Against the Dark Arts, both of which they had together. In Charms it was pretty much the same as Potions, with Professor Flitwick revising the past lessons and asking questions. Harry continued surprising his friends by answering all the questions asked of him correctly, and when asked of it, he again said he studied over the holidays.
Defense was what everyone was looking forward to, wanting to know what the new professor was like. When they entered the classroom, Professor Rohain was already there, sitting upon his desk and gazing peacefully out of the open window, looking out upon the grounds. He turned and faced the class when they all had entered, examining all of their faces in detail, he paused for a second on Harry, looking deep into his eyes. Professor Rohain had scruffy, what Harry had thought was black, extremely dark brown hair. His eyes were bright blue-green, showing a kindness in them covered in an unknown emotion.
'Hello class,' his voice was soft and kindly, gaining silence from the class like Professor Snape was able to achieve without asking, 'as you all know I am Professor Rohain, and I will be your Defense teacher this year, and maybe next, I don not know. I have heard you have covered dangerous creatures, defense spells, jinxes, curses and hexes as well as the unforgivable curses. But you are very behind. This year we will go over a bit of everything, even Dueling properly. How many people here have considered competing in the Dueling Contest?' almost all the class raised their hands, including Harry, Ron and Hermione, as well as Draco and his cronies. The professor smiled, 'Excellent, and how many have actually competed in a Duel before?' many of the class dropped their hands. Harry was among the ones with their hands still up. The teacher nodded at the ones with their hands still up, 'Harry, could you please come up here, and Mr. Malfoy,' Harry groaned as he stood and walked to the front with Malfoy, knowing what they were going to do, 'Professor Dumbledore has said you two are among the top in your class, Harry, you being the highest. Would you two please demonstrate a Duel for us all, if you like?' They both nodded and walked away from each other, wands in hand. They turned and counted to three, Malfoy shot a stunning spell at him just before three. Harry easily dodged it sending a disarming spell back. Malfoy blocked it sending one back. They continued like this for a while, sending spells at each other and blocking them. Harry finally managed to hit him with a jelly leg jinx, causing him to topple to the ground just as the bell rang. The class began filing out as Harry lifted the spell and began walking back to his seat when something hit his back, drenching his shirt and starting to burn his skin. He yelped in pain as he pulled of his cloak and through it of the ground, but still it kept burning him.
He yelped in pain and through off his shirt to the ground. Hermione and Ron were the only one's left now, except the teacher who was yelling at Malfoy outside the classroom. He came running back in, seeing the state Harry was in. He was panting and trying not to yell in pain as the spell that hit him continued to burn. Professor Rohain quickly muttered the name of the spell to fix Harry's back.
'Mr. Malfoy hit you with the Acid Spell, which burns as if it was eating through your skin but never leaves a mark.' Harry sighed as he reached to pick up his cloak when he heard his teacher gasp. He looked up as a hand grabbed his shoulders and pulled him up. Tyler Rohain stood gaping at the mark on Harry's shoulder, and then quickly released him. 'I'm sorry but you have to go, go, I'll see you tomorrow for your next class. Good Day.' He ushered them out of the room, handing Harry his clothes and shutting the door after them. Harry pulled on his clothes, as his friends began quickly talking of what happened, walking into the library for their study period. Their professor's actions had startled the trio who began trying to figure out what it meant. He obviously recognized the mark on Harry's shoulder, Avlantia's symbol, but how? This mere question took up most of their time in the library only ending when dinner began.
Up in the common room that night Harry, Ron and Hermione wrote their names down on the list for the Dueling Contest. There were many names on it already, varying from a few first years up to seventh years, all eager to compete for their house. A notice was placed up for Quidditch Tryouts on Wednesday Afternoon where the remaining team members and Professor McGonagall would decide upon the new players than a captain. Soon Harry and Ron were standing on the Quidditch pitch with their broomsticks, Professor McGonagall and the new team members behind them voting on a new captain. During tryouts they had decided upon all the new members. The chasers were Ginny Weasley, Dean Thomas and a fourth year, Jarrod Symons; they all seemed to communicate well and shared the quaffle evenly among them selves. The beaters were Sara James, a solid fifth year with a very strong arm and Seamus Finnigan who had a brilliant aim. McGonagall announced that they had come to a decision so Harry and Ron made their way back to the group; both nervous at the outcome.
'It was a very close call, but the difference resided in a mere two votes. The new Gryffindor Quidditch Captain is Harry Potter,' a great happiness welled inside him as his fellow team mates congratulated him and he thanked them. Soon after they were celebrating in the Common Room, with many bottles of Butterbeer smuggled up from the kitchens as well as lots of sweets. It ended soon after when Harry went to bed with a head ache when Dennis Creevely tripped over the rug and smashed Harry over the head with his camera. Ron joined his soon after having drunk too much Butterbeer and sunk into his bed with a stomach ache. After a dreamless sleep he awoke in high spirits, got showered and headed down to breakfast humming slightly when he was pulled abruptly into an unused classroom. Harry opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by the person in front of him.
'She's coming! She's coming for HIM!'
