Chapter Fifteen- Sleep Deprived and Mute

“Harry, you have to sleep, look at you!” it had been almost a week since Harry had awoken from his dreadful ordeal, and a week since he'd last slept. Hermione had been pestering him all day, since breakfast when he had almost collapsed after showering. Everyone was worrying about him, not just his friends. He had decided to go to classes. He couldn't stand not doing anything. He could see it in his teacher's eyes, as he sat in a corner scribbling down notes, or staring numbly out of a window.

The fact that he was still mute was floating about his head, when almost all the professors were working on a cure. His mind was also blocked from replaying those moments inside his dream. Dumbledore had suggested that Voldemort had placed a newly found spell on him, causing him to speak none, write none and show none of his experiences. Every night Harry sat by the window, away from the fire and attempted to write something, anything about his nightmare. But every night he failed. Ron was worried about him. He sometimes spoke to him, of how he was, but it never worked. Ron wasn't the only one getting extremely worried as well. Hermione was by far the most miserable after Harry, having come up of nothing in her late afternoons in the library.

He just shrugged and stared at the parchment before him, willing himself to write one word, just one. But he couldn't. He ended up writing his own name when he was attempting to write `Voldemort'. He couldn't mime what happened either. Whenever he thought of opening his mouth to mime what had happened, his mouth would stay clamped shut.

The castle stood under him, the many windows dark and shadowed. The moon reflected in some, a mere glint at his height. Some nights he would come out here to think and to fly. Quidditch was still an option to feel the wind rustling past as he searched for the golden snitch, but this kind of flying was taken to the next level. He could fly freely above the grounds and castle, seeing all and feeling the wind currents underneath his feathers. He would just glide down over the forest, peering inside, occasionally glimpsing animals that only came out at night. He sometimes saw a unicorn, grazing with its foal, so peacefully.

Tonight was no different. He watched as Hagrid's hut passed by beside him, as he flew up into the night sky. He was shooting straight up, his eyes on one shining star in the sky. Sirius.

He hissed silently and angrily, turning in midair and plummeting back to the grassy slopes. Unknown to him, was that he was being followed. A medium sized brown glossy owl trailed behind him, flapping madly to keep up with Harry's powerful wings. After about five minutes of flying, Harry dived down hear the lake and caught the reflection of something following him. He swooped down to the side of the lake and landed with a plop on the grass, as a messy haired, green eyed boy.

He looked up to where the owl was following and smiled.

“Trust Hermione to keep a watch on me.” He said in his mind. The bird didn't seem to think that Harry knew who she was until he raised his hand and waved happily. She glided down and crashed lightly onto the grass. She transformed and looked embarrassingly up at Harry who was offering his hand to help her up.

“Thanks,” she murmured, brushing down her sweater and jeans. Harry just nodded and smiled slightly, turning and walking back around the lake. Hermione caught up with him and placed her hand in his and leant into him, resting her head on his shoulder. He smiled and squeezed her hand continuing on their walk. They sat under the large Beachwood tree, hand in hand. They were just sitting quietly, thinking about odd things when Hermione startled Harry by leaning in and pressing her lips to his. He savored the moment until they pulled apart. Hermione was tinged a slight pink, and Harry was sure his face was red. She smiled nervously.

“It's getting late, maybe we should go back.” He nodded happily and helped her up, walking back with her up the grounds. Up in the dormitory he fire was a mere glowing ember, setting a slight glow on the armchairs by the fire. Harry kissed Hermione goodnight at the bottom of the girls' staircase, this time it wasn't a small peck, but a long, passionate kiss. When they pulled away, Harry's face was burning, and Hermione's was bright red. She stood back grinning from ear to ear.

“Night, Harry!” she said to him, walking up the stairs.

“Night, Mione.” Harry mumbled softly, forgetting he was mute.

“Ron, Ron, Ron, Ron. Ron, Ron, Ron!” Harry said in a singsong tone, doing a sort of jig in the bedroom after waking up in the morning and yawning exceedingly loud. His red headed best friend groaned in his sleep.

“Harry, shut up I'm trying to sleep!” he grumbled incoherently, forgetting Harry was supposed to be mute. Harry waited a few seconds, grinning stupidly, before Ron said quite loudly “WHAT?”

He sat bolt upright in his four-poster bed, scrambling around with the hangings. He flopped out onto the floor, staring up into Harry's broad grin.

“Did you just say something?>” he asked nervously and excitedly. Harry began to pretend to be deep in thought before saying.

“Maybe I did.”

“How?” asked Ron getting over his first shocked state. “I dunno, I think I was mute last night or I just didn't think to speak. Then when I woke up I could speak!”

“And that's it? Did you have another dream last night, about, Vol-Voldemort? He whispered frighteningly. Harry shook his head, remembering nothing of his night's dreams.

“Have you told me everything that they have said to you, Harry?” asked Dumbledore. Harry, Hermione and Ron had rushed to the headmaster's office straight after breakfast, and Harry had just told Dumbledore everything that he could remember.

He nodded. “Yes, sir.” Harry answered. The old man nodded his head, a faint frown on his aged face. He turned and looked at the boy before him. He smiled briefly.

“You may go, Harry. Please enjoy your time today.” The three friends nodded and walked out of the office, talking of many odd things.

Halloween came and went and Christmas was fast approaching. The next Saturday was a Hogsmeade trip and this was the day Harry was getting Hermione's gift. The streets were frosted with snow. Students bustled up and down the frozen lane, their breaths escaping their mouths in curtains of white. Ron was walking beside him, a layering on two maroon jumpers atop his long-sleeved shirt under his cloak. And atop all these pieces of garments was a very thick traveling cloak, gave to him by Bill the summer that had just passed. Harry was wearing his traveling cloak over his green Weasley jumper and cloak. Hermione, Ginny and Luna had gone off together while Harry and Ron went their own way.

“Its so bloody cold out here!” stammered Ron, huddling into his cloak. “Can't we go in and grab a Butterbeer, please?” he pleaded. Harry nodded in response. They clambered down to the three broomsticks, opening the door and gasping at the many people inside. They could hardly move. Every table was full, with extra people conjuring chairs and placing them on the corners. There were three spare spots at the counter, where Madam Rosetta was serving a couple of frostbitten fourth years.

“What can I get for you young fella's?” asked the plump witch serving them.

“Just two Butterbeers, thanks.” Responded Ron, gazing around as the witch left and grabbed a couple of bottles of Butterbeer. She returned with a smile, talking the money away as they uncapped their bottles.

“This is more like it!” said Ron loudly, leaning back in his chair and licking his lips. Harry had to agree with him. After the freezing cold of the snowy streets, the warm Butterbeer trickling down their throats was heaven. An hour passed while Ron and Harry were still chattering away in the cozy little pub, when Harry coughed suddenly and almost choked. Ron began to laugh but stopped when he spotted the look on his friends face.

“What's wrong mate?” he asked, a slight bit of a laugh still in his voice.

“I've forgot about Hermione's present, we have to go in less than an hour!”

“Then we better go mate!” they reentered the snow filled street, pulling their cloaks to their chests. They had a quarter of an hour left until they had to go back to the carriages and to school. By this time Harry was really panicking now.

“What should I get her?” he said once again. Ron shrugged his shoulders.

“I dunno, mate. Just get her a book or something like that, stuff she likes” Harry peered into the window of Flourish and Blotts, searching for something, anything he could get his girlfriend. Just when he had given up, he spotted something glittering in a nearby window. He walked over to it and spotted a diary. It was completely gold, with a heart-shaped symbol on the front, it was pressed in, as if something should have been there but was missing. Next to it, on a blue velvet cushion was a heart shaped pendant attached to a gold chain. A price tag was stuck to a sign next to it reading: Fifteen Galleons; Seven Sickles; Eight Knuts. Ron appeared beside him and gazed at the gold diary.

“Your bloody mental mate” said Ron as they wandered back up the road to the carriages. “Buying a thing like that for that much, mental, I'm telling you!” Harry had ended up purchasing the gold diary and heart shaped key. He hadn't minded about the cost, as long as it pleased Hermione he didn't care.

“I've told you before, Ron, I don't care how much things are! Money doesn't matter to me.” Ron rolled his eyes as they pulled themselves up into the Thestral drawn carriage. Hermione, Ginny and Luna joined them shortly after.

“Hello Harry, Ronald.” said Luna seating herself next to Ron and pulling out a copy of the Quibbler. Ron said a meek hello. Hermione sat next to Harry, a parcel on her lap. She eyes the small package on his lap with interest and smiled cheekily. Harry smirked and patted it, gaining a pleading look from her.

“Is that my present you've got there, Mr. Potter?” she asked encouragingly, sliding closer.

“It may be, Ms. Granger. But you will have to wait until the morn of Christmas to see its contents.” She moaned and put a frown on her face. It changed into a pleading expression. Her big brown eyes turning into puppy dog eyes, looking at him with deepest want. Harry shook his head, getting her to sigh and shift further away.
