Chapter Sixteen- Time to Shine

The final for the Dueling Contest was that night. After Harry hadn't been awake when the final was due, they had postponed it to December Fifteenth, which was a Friday. The last round for the first group had taken place a few weeks ago, with Gregory Taylor winning against Jennifer Olson. Harry was one of the finalists, dueling against Draco Malfoy. Ron had been beaten by Harry and Hermione had lost to Draco. They both were upset but had been happy that Harry had made it to the top, as they knew he'd most likely win.

“Welcome to the final of the Dueling Contest for the Second Group!” announced professor Rohain that night in the hall used for Dueling. Harry's stomach was doing back flips, reaching up to his throat where it felt as if his heart was going to jump out onto the floor. “Tonight we have Harry potter verses Draco Malfoy in one of the most anticipated matches of the contest. In less than fifteen minutes they will be up here firing away at each other, and as soon as one of their feet touches the ground off of the platform, the other player is the winner. All spells, jinxes and hexes are allowed except the use of Unforgivables. When Dumbledore gives the word, I'll ask the two contestants to make their way to the platform!”

He was extremely nervous now. Hermione had her arm linked with his own, and Ron stood to his right, grinning manically.

“I can't wait to see the look on Malfoy's face when he's picking himself of the ground!” he said excitedly. Harry smiled encouragingly, though his stomach didn't agree with his lips. All too soon for Harry's liking Professor Rohain took to the podium again.

“Now, would Mr. Potter and Malfoy please take their places on the Dueling Platform, as we're about to start. Ron shook Harry's hand, still grinning. Hermione surprised him by leaning up and planting a tender kiss on his lips. “Good luck,” she whispered in his ear. He kissed her cheek and took a deep breath, walking towards the raised platform.

Malfoy was already at the top and in his stance when Harry arrived. He didn't even move his eyes from the ground when Harry walked passed and took his position, Harry thought this was strange. He was expecting a crude comment at least. “Please take your positions and remember the rules. Bow to your partner, that's right, and raise your wands. When my counting hits zero, you may begin. THREE, TWO, ONE, ZERO, GO!” he shouted, watching as Harry and Draco beginning circling the ring, staring at each other. Harry noticed that Draco's usual sleek, shiny blond hair was now oily and spread about his head in a rough manner and his robes hung of him like extra skin. Something was defiantly wrong.

“What's up, Malfoy, you don't look your usual self?” said Harry, still facing the blond boy while circling. The onlookers watched in confusion at seeing no fighting. He didn't answer too quickly, gazing out at the surrounding crowd. Harry watched his gaze. “They can't here us, silencing charm.” Said Harry, wondering why the boy looked so nervous. Draco Malfoy looked into Harry's eyes and stopped circling, so Harry stopped as well.

“She's coming,” he said quietly. Harry nodded.

“Yeah, um, I already know that!” he said, curious as to how Malfoy knew of this. The boy raised an eyebrow.

“And your not afraid, Potter? She's worse than the Dark Lord, she's his lover. With them together not even Dumbledore stands a chance.”

“And how is it you know all this?” Harry asked, keeping his wand out in front of him. Draco laughed.

“My father is a Death eater, if you didn't know, Potter.”

“Nah, I really didn't know that Malfoy!” said Harry sarcastically. “Where are you getting at with this? And why are you telling me, I thought you'd want me dead or something?” he said unbelievingly. The crowd began to get restless wanting to see some first hand fighting. Draco smiled.

“I don't want to turn out like my father, Potter. If that's too hard to believe.” Harry laughed. “Now that's hard to believe!” he answered humorously.

“No it's not Potter, its true. Everybody thinks I want to be a Death Eater and serve the Dark lord and be one of his `loyal servants'. I have no idea why someone would want to do that!”

“But you always say that you hate mudbloods and half-breeds and all that. I thought-I thought you wanted to kill me, and-everyone who you didn't like?” said Harry humorously but seriously. Draco quirked an eyebrow up.

“There's no doubt about that, Potter, but its not like I'd really do it, I mean, that's just plain stupid to do something like that, you almost always get caught!” Harry gazed around at the people who were watching and waiting. “Shall we continue this later?” he said to Draco. “As we are meant to be fighting, even though they already know who's gonna win!”

“Yeah, me!” said Draco firing a stunner at him. Harry blocked it with a shield charm and sent a disarmer at him. It continued like that for almost half an hour. The crowd was going ecstatic, cheering from behind the silencing charm.

“PROTEGO!” Harry shouted, blocking a jelly-leg jinx. “Petrificus Totalis!” he said, but Malfoy rebounded it at him. He only just ducked out of the way before another spell hit his leg. He looked up into Malfoy's smirking face. “Told you, Potter!” he said, pointing his wand at his head, not seeing Harry's wand being pointed strait at his chest.

“REDUCTO!” Harry yelled, sending Draco flying off backwards into the crowd. The spell which had hit his legs was covering them in large, blue warts. They were stinging and pussing. The silencing charm was removed as the full impact of the screaming crowd met his ears. He staggered for a few seconds before Hermione wrapped him in a large hug, he let out a yelp of pain as her arms squeezed on his pussing sores. She gasped and tutted, staring at the blue warts with disgust.

“Mr. Potter, you're hear again, I see. What is it this time?” said Madam Pomfrey the school nurse. She gazed at the blue pussing sores and tutted in exact replica of Hermione's. “That's a nasty dose of the Wartiocia Charm! It will take a few minutes to heal if you would like to sit up here for me?” she said pointing to the white sheeted hospital bed. Ten minutes later they were walking back up the corridors, the moon shining through the windows cast a spooky light over the stone walls. Every so often they would pass somebody, hearing, “Congratulations, Harry!” or, “Nice one, Potter.”

“Still famous,” said Ron, not knowing he was quoting what he had said in their first year when they were departing at the train station. Harry smiled, leaning onto Hermione's side, yawning. As soon as they entered the common room, there was an uproar of screams. It seemed that the whole of Gryffindor House was squeezed into the room, all cheering and brandishing bottles of Butterbeer. Harry grinned after trying not to for so long.

“You should have seen the look on Malfoy's face!” someone shouted in the midst of the crowd, answered by other cheers. He was pushed onto a table, where he stood up and looked over at the sea of black robed people cheering his name and whistling. A Butterbeer was passed to him as well as about five handfuls of sweets. Someone enchanted a normal muggle radio, which wouldn't work due to the large amounts of magical energy in the grounds, to play. The party continued all night, only ending when an angry professor Snape was found hexing the portrait of the fat lady to get inside and shut everyone up. Harry slumped into his four-poster bed, hearing Ron humming the theme song to the Chudley Cannons sleepily.

His eyes shut heavily, and he smiled. For the first time in ages, as soon as his eyes shut sleep overcame him, bringing things that would rather be forgotten.

He who wields the light in the dark

Will try and find that lonely spark

But day always has a night

As dark has a light

And the one that tries to survive

Will no sooner be alive

And when the prophecy is beheld

Say goodbye to your precious world

And as I find my long lost love

There will be no white dove

“Time to shine, Harry.”

That simple sentence had been haunting him all through the Christmas holidays, and even on Christmas Day. The look on Hermione's face when she ripped open her present from him wasn't even enough to lighten his spirits. The holidays passed, with Harry's mind on that one thing: Avlantia.

“She's coming for him, when five moons pass.” Was what the stargazer, Firenze had told him in his first week back. If what he said was true than the `she' was Avlantia and the five moons which were meant to pass were coming to a close, as it was now the beginning of January.

“What do you mean, he's not here!” Harry practically yelled. Professor McGonagall looked at him sternly.

“Exactly what I said, Mr. Potter. The headmaster has been called away on urgent business with the order!” she hissed her voice barley a whisper. Harry's heart was beating frantically in his chest and his palms had gone cold and sweaty. “But-but………when will he be back?” he asked, his voice full of worry and nervousness. She looked at him again, this time with curiousness.

“What's the matter, Potter?” she asked, dropping her voice a little, and adding a bit of sympathy. Harry glanced around nervously, not knowing if he should say something. “Nothing, but will you please tell me when he gets back, I need to talk to him as soon as possible. Thanks,” he then walked away from her office, his skin cold, and his heart a lot lower than it had been before. It was one day until the start of February, and one day until the fifth moon had passed since Firenze had warned him. No dreams, good or bad, had come to him since that night when Avlantia's voice had rang through his mind, speaking the incantation about himself and telling him it was `time to shine'.

His friends had been alerted by Harry of the upcoming time, and they too, were worried, theirs shown on their faces, but Harry hid his very well. But they still knew he was afraid inside. It was the second of November and there was no sign of Dumbledore or Avlantia, and Harry was starting to get frantic.

“I think we should tell the old DA, just so the students are aware. Do you still have the Galleon, Harry?” Hermione stated that day in the library quietly. Harry nodded slowly, and pulled his bag onto the table. A moment later he held the fake galleon in his palm. “Good, change the date and time so it reads the fourth of February at seven-thirty in the evening. They should all have their galleons.”

“Hopefully,” added Ron skeptically. Harry agreed with his girlfriend, but something didn't feel right.

“Hello again everyone,” Harry announced, looking about upon the curious faces of the old DA. There weren't as many as the year before, those people having lost or disposed of their galleons. Butterflies fluttered inside his stomach but he held them back, knowing this was important. “I have called you here tonight to tell you something very important. I have word that there might be an attack on Hogwarts, and I state `might' as it might not even happen. I'm telling you all to be aware and keep your wands with you at all times. I don't know what date this month the attack will happen, but I don know that the attack will come from Voldemort,” there was a sharp intake of breath, “and another just as powerful.

“Please stay calm and don't panic, just remember what you've learnt last year and all the other spells and things the professors had told you. “Good luck, and thank you!” Harry stepped down of the small podium summoned by Hermione and let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding. Hermione smiled proudly and wrapped him in a hug. Ron merely nodded his face slightly pale but a ready look in his eyes. Many people began to crowd around them, firing question after question at Harry. He just shook his head and spoke one three worded sentence, “Just be ready!”

The wind whipped by his sides as he soared through the air. He watched the many yellow and red flashed below him as a game of quidditch was being played; Gryffindor Vs Hufflepuff. The game had been going for almost half an hour, and Harry had spotted the snitch a few times. He didn't want to end the game too quickly, enjoying just flying around the pitch, listening to the cheering crowd and whistling wind. He noticed a speck of gold glistening in the sun directly below him about a foot from the ground. He smiled and flipped into a dive, falling straight for the ground.

He was picking up speed, hearing slight screams and babbles of cheers coming from the stands. His glasses stayed stuck to his face due to the pressure of the air. He was nearing the ground and the snitch when he caught a sight of something black out of the corner of his eye, he flicked his eyes to it and gasped as the speeding bludger smacked straight into his leg. He flipped through the air and pelted straight into the damp grass. His leg felt as though it had been cut off and his chest and arms were hurting from the impact of the dive. People were screaming around him but he couldn't see anything. His eyes were open but everything was black. He tries to pries them open but they hurt too much.

Finally they split open revealing a large blearing of light; he moaned and focused his eyes. He could make out the blurry pattern of his shattered glasses still on his face and could smell the disgusting smell of blood. His whole body was throbbing but still nobody came to help. He could still hear the screams and shouting and `laughing'. He lifted his head painfully and looked out upon the scene of the quidditch pitch, now a blurry patch of black, moving shapes. Something white illuminated the dark figures and it glided forward. Harry tried to scream but Avlantia, still dressed in white looked down upon him, her ruby lips in a large smile, showing off her perfect white teeth. Her bright blue eyes penetrated into his own, she laughed and spoke.

“Look, young Harry, I'm shining.”
