Chapter Six-The Spear of Shadow
Small runes were scraped around the shining metal, glowing green in the darkness. It was the same spear that had pierced his skin in the dream. The point was sharp, but a black metal instead of the silver. Harry ran his fingers over the inscriptions; they slower dulled in colour, leaving just plain carvings. His heart beat faster as the realisation dawned on him. How? Was it even possible to be harmed physically during a dream, and bring the weapon back with him? Unless someone left it for him, someone who was in his dream, someone who pushed the spear into his shoulder.
“But how,” Harry murmured to himself through the silence, “and why?” But nobody spoke out to give him his answers; nobody spoke to give him guidance. In his hands the carvings became green once more, shining bright in the night. Harry gasped as the spear disintegrated in his own hands; became dust that blew to the floor. Only the black tip was left in his hand, almost unnoticeable in the dark. But as he reached out to pick it up, he almost immediately threw it to the fall. A scorch mark burned where it had lain, on the floor; just visible was the black tip. Harry sat there, on his bed, staring at the black tip, unable to believe what had happened. But to top it all off, the tip glowed hot white, and melted, into the floor. There was no trace of the spear left; the few remains of dust had escaped into darkness, or blew away. His breathing came in shallow gasps, as Harry sat speechless on his bed, still staring at the floor.
Harry awoke in the early hours of the morning. He couldn't remember falling to sleep the night before, all he could remember was that the spear vanished before his very eyes, with no trace left behind. “I have to tell Dumbledore!” Harry thought to himself, getting out of bed, and throwing on some clothes. The halls were silent as he made his way down stairs and into the kitchen. No-one was up, so he decided to make himself some breakfast. After fixing himself with some food, he went back up stairs, but paused at Ron's room, when he heard someone muttering and moaning inside. Harry crept in. Ron lay in his bed, thrashing about in the covers, still asleep. He seemed to be having a nightmare; small bursts of talk came from his lips.
“No! No, not Claire, not Claire!” He began tossing around, starting to yell. Harry rushed forward saying his name, and shaking his shoulders.
“Who………what you want?” he grumbled, staring sleepily up at Harry. He finally registered who it was and rubbed his eyes groggily.
“You where having a nightmare. You mentioned someone called Claire, who's she?” asked Harry, placing himself on the corner of the bed. Ron's face paled considerably.
“She………she's our n……next door neighbour………” he said a little too fast and nervously. Harry looked at him seriously considering if he was telling the truth, but merely nodded. Harry removed himself from the room, while Ron changed, then accompanied him downstairs for his breakfast. Harry expected the kitchen to be bare like it had been when he entered, but when they made their way in there was a few people seated inside. Mrs Weasley was busy cooking a delicious smelling breakfast, while Lupin and Tonks were having a conversation on accidental spell casting, which seemed to be going fairly well, considering Tonks had just knocked over her orange juice, leaving a huge orange stain. Across from them Hermione and Ginny were talking and giggling amongst themselves, and Harry swore as he sat down next to Hermione, that he spotted Ginny nudge her arm, her eyebrow raised, and saw Hermione's cheeks blush, but he brushed it to the back of his mind. Harry didn't push the subject of Ron's dream, but told Hermione of it none the less, knowing that sometimes dreams have strange interpretations.
That day they were all heading to Diagon Alley to get their school things, for Harry, this meant being heavily guarded by the order at all times. But at least, after much persuasion, they agreed to follow unnoticed, so they didn't draw attention to the small group. They had just emerged through the brick wall, separating the old batty pub from the alley, when a group of small looking children began swarming around Harry, all in awe. Harry didn't know what to do, so he just looked up pleadingly to the rest of their own group, who all were laughing and smirking at him. A plump old woman rushed forward into the midst of the children, pulling them away from Harry.
“I'm so sorry dear. It's just they haven't seen you before, ever. And this is the first time they've been into Diagon Alley, or anything remotely magical,” she stood facing the others, surrounded by the kids, all beaming up at Harry who just smiled goofily, “You see I run the London Orphanage and all these little dears are having their first trip away. Most of their parents died due to He-who-must-not-be-named, and you are their hero.” Harry looked sadly down at all the happy faces, wondering how they could possibly be happy with all that had happened to them: their families had been destroyed. Once they all had said goodbye to the kids and the lady, they made their separate ways to different places. Mrs Weasley, Ginny and Hermione went one way, saying something about new dress robes, Harry shrugged his shoulders as he, Ron and Lupin made their own means to Madam Malkins to purchase some more robes.
At around lunch time they all met up to get their books. Hermione and Ginny were back in their giggly mood, they both were continuously red, and when they entered the store, disappeared behind a stack of books named: True Love-Spells and Curses. About an hour later they were all standing on the landing of Grimmauld Place, their packages lying on the ground, many more than usual.
“God, how many books do they want to assign us? We've got about ten more than usual, for our NEWT courses, and I can't even do what I wanted to do, since I needed three more OWLs to be an Auror.” Ron was still complaining about the amount of books they needed to purchase in order for their NEWT courses for their sixth year. Harry smiled slightly, but remembered something.
“What did you get for your OWLs, how many?” asked Harry sitting down on his own trunk. Ron looked disgusted a minute before answering.
“I got fourteen and I needed seventeen. What did you get?” when Harry told him his face lit up slightly, but then vanished, “God, Harry. Nineteen! At least you'll be able to tell me how hard it is to be an Auror, and………” His face broke out into an evil grin and laughed, “Tell me how disgusting NEWT level Potions is. I'm going to drop it!” Harry's heart dropped at the thought of another to years of Snape, pestering him about the wrong coloured potion or too much powdered toad. Hermione sat down next to him looking happy.
“Well……what did you get Mione?” Harry asked, knowing she couldn't wait to burst out with her results.
“I got twenty-five,” Harry saw her smile drop, “But I lost marks in Astronomy because I was watching Hagrid and forgot about my test, and in History of Magic, when………” she glanced over at Harry, who now was feeling very uncomfortable. It was his fault that Hermione lost some marks. He had collapsed with the vision of Sirius when they were sitting the exam. Harry stood up stretching.
“Look, I'm sorry Hermione,” She opened her mouth to speak, but Harry kept talking, “Don't try and say it wasn't my fault, because it was, for everything. If I only learnt Occulumcy then I wouldn't have had that dream, saving all of us some marks plus saving Sirius's life.” Ron and Hermione sat speechless staring up at Harry who began walking up the stairs, down the hall and into his room, once his godfathers. Harry lay on his large, deep blue bed, staring up at the high ceiling. There was a knock at the door as Hermione and Ron entered. They made their way over to his bed, Hermione sat down next to Harry while Ron sat in the chair at the desk.
“Harry, you've got to stop blaming your self for everything,” Harry opened his mouth to retort, but Ron cut him off, “Yeah mate, it wasn't your fault, none of it was.” Harry was now fairly angry, but once again he didn't get a chance to speak as Hermione continued, “If you need someone to blame, blame V………voldemort. He's the one causing so much pain and turmoil, him and his death eaters, not you.” He didn't want to answer back any more. What she said made a point. It was Voldemort who did all these things. Voldemort who committed all the crimes and destroyed so many families and lives.
“Thanks Hermione. Thanks Ron. It's just Sirius just came into my life, he was like my dad, and then he left, just as quickly as he came. It's not just me suffering either, Moony is as well. He's the last Maraulder now, all his friends are gone, or the ones that were actually good friends. If I have to kill Voldemort, I will kill Voldemort. It's up to me.” Harry looked up at his two very good friends, both looking confused.
“What do you mean, Harry? If you have to kill Voldemort, you'll kill Voldemort?” asked Hermione. It had just hit Harry that they hadn't heard the prophecy.
“That day, after the ministry, Professor Dumbledore told me about the true prophecy,” Ron made to say something, but Hermione shot him an angry glance, making him shut up, “He told me that Sybil Trelawney spoke a prophecy before I was born,” Harry told them both of what Dumbledore had told him, leaving their faces shocked.
“Harry, you can't go through with it. You'll die.” Hermione was still shocked with the concept of Harry having to kill the most powerful dark wizard to date. Harry gave off a small smile at his best friends care.
“If I don't Hermione, Voldemort will kill more people and wreck more families. I can't let him do that if there's something I can do. It won't be soon, I don't think. I'll have to train and learn new things to help my chances at defeating him. I don't want you or Ron getting hurt for hanging out with me, so I wouldn't feel offended if you want to go, and not hang around me anymore.” Hermione's face was streaked with tears. She leant in and hugged Harry, cleanly around the middle, sobbing onto his shoulder. Ron came over and sat down with them, shaking his head, a smirk on his face.
“Mate, if you think we'd leave you, after doing all this dangerous stuff with you, just because we found out that some nutter wants to do you in, and that you want to do him in as well, your just as crazy as Gilderoy Lockart that time we seen him in Mungo's.” Harry grinned goofily out from under Hermione's bushy hair. She let out a large sob, raising her head showing her magnificently brown chestnut eyes, glistening with tears. She sniffed a couple of times before smiling, showing off her pearly white teeth, the teeth only a dentists daughter could have.
“Ron's right, Harry. We love you, your our best friend, and you'd think we've want to end that friend ship because we think hanging out with you might kill us, you've got to be kidding. Being your friend from first year has risked our lives; we don't care, and never will.” Ron put a hand on his shoulder and grinned toothily at his two friends.
“So, when are we doing the Animagus thing?” asked Ron, putting on a fake serious voice. Harry hadn't really thought a bout it much.
“Well I heard Dumbledore saying that my dad and Sirius spent most of their early years trying to do it, so I think we should wait to go back to Hogwarts before starting any thing, just in case. But that doesn't mean we can't do the thinking side of it. The book said you need a good conscience mind to do it. By concentrating on what you want to accomplish it prepares you for taking the potion, since that finalises it. We could do that up in the secret room every second night?” They both nodded so he continued, “We could also do tactical training, like self defence and learn some better spells. I could ask Moony if he and some other order members could train us or something, what you think.” He looked at them both with identical grins spreading across their faces.
“Great plan mate!” Ron answered.
“Yeah, Harry, you must of put a lot of thought into it?” Hermione said curiously.
“No, not really. I just thought of it then. Spending time around you, Mione, has equipped my thinking abilities and made them quicker by at least three times.” This caused a light shade of crimson to creep onto Hermione's cheeks. Harry smirked at her; she punched him playfully on the arm as another knock sounded on the door. In stepped Moony, looking a bit less shabby for once, but still had the greying hair. He smiled at the trio friends, bringing back old memories.
“Molly would like you to go down stairs for some food, you all have been up here for two hours, its now almost six. We'll be having an order meeting after dinner; Professor Dumbledore feels it's necessary for you to attend the meeting,” Harry, Hermione and Ron's jaws dropped, “She's actually going to let us go to it?” said Ron incredulously. Lupin smiled softly.
“Yes she's actually going to let you go in. She feels that after last year, you's are old enough already. She would like you down in a minute, so hurry.” He turned and disappeared down to the kitchen. Ron looked amazed at the two, and said rather quickly.
“Let's get down there now, so it'll be quicker for the meeting to start.” He jumped off the bed and raced out of the room, leaving two rather startled friends behind; they just shook their heads and laughed, following after their rather excited friend.
