Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter, never said I did… I just like to use the characters and the universe for my own little fantasies… is that so wrong?

A/N: OK, this is in response to a challenge set by Excalibur in the H/Hr challenges on Portkey.

A/N2: Thank you so much to all of you for your positive reviews. I honestly didn't expect that kind of response. Thank you!

And now, without any further ado:

Chapter 2

Harry, having the day off was sitting on the sofa, in the middle of the living room of the shared flat.

The silent tranquillity that had surrounded him was suddenly broken by the whistle of flames issued from the fireplace in front of him. Hermiones Boss' head was floating eerily amongst the green embers.

"Oh hello Harry. Is um- Hermione in?" She asked pleasantly, any untrained person would have easily missed the miniscule trace of panic lacing her tone. Harry, however, did not.

"No." He answered slowly "What's wrong?"

"Why would you think something's wrong Harry? Nothing's wrong."

"Lucy…" He said warningly, letting her know that no matter how much she wanted to hide it, Harry could see through her poorly erected façade, and could tell there was something wrong.

Something very wrong.

"Well… Hermione didn't exactly make it to the office today…" She said, choosing her words carefully.

"What do you mean?" Harry pressed.

"She… well… she did arrive at the Ministry… but she never made it into the office."

"WHAT!? Where is she?!" He asked jumping up from his comfortable seat.

"We're not entirely sure."

"You're not sure?"

"No… we um… found some of her blood on a doorway in the corridor she would have walked down this morning. But don't panic! I'm sure she's somewhere around."

"I'm coming in."

"You don't have to-"

"My best friend is hurt, and you don't even know where she is! I'm not going to sit here, and do nothing!"

"It's your day off-"

"I'm coming in." With that her apparated out of the flat, and to the ministry phone box. He dialled four, two, seven, seven, nine and was transported immediately to the main foyer.

"Where's the blood?" He asked promptly as Lucy walked towards him quickly.

"Follow me. I'll take you to it." She led him past the large, golden fountain and into the lift at the end of the large room.

"How the hell did this happen?!" He asked angrily "A whole building full of Aurors, and they let her get abducted!? If only I'd have been here…" He muttered, mentally kicking himself for his stupidity. He should have known that something was going to happen. Voldemort had been far too quiet over the past few years, and he knew it was only a matter of time before he did something drastic to ruin Harry's life. Why hadn't he seen this?! It was so obviously Voldemort. He shouldn't have let his guard down for even a second, and because of his foolishness Hermione had been taken. It was his fault, and he knew it was. No one would be able to tell him otherwise, no matter how hard they may try.

"Harry, you couldn't have stopped this. Even if you were here." Lucy said sadly.

"I could have tried. Instead I was at home doing NOTHING to stop it. I should have seen this coming!"

"Harry this isn't your fault."

"Of course it is. If I wasn't Harry Potter she would have been safe, if she didn't know me, she would be here."

"You don't know it was you-know-who's followers."

"It was. Who else would want to hurt Hermione?"

The lift doors opened on the floor of the office. Lucy led him down a long, dark corridor where Hermione's blood was found, and where she was struck unconscious.

"Here." She said looking at the doorway.

Harry instantaneously knelt to inspect the dark red substance on the white surface.

"In here." He whispered moving into the room.

He glanced at the contents of the room and pulled out his wand. He muttered a few well-chosen words, and the shadow of two sets of footprints appeared, coming into the room from the hallway and into the empty space in the centre of the room.

"They used a Portkey." He said finally, slipping into his professional manner, "She was knocked unconscious in the corridor by one of them and bought in here by another one. The one who bought her in was a bit lax though, and knocked Hermione's head on the doorway. They obviously didn't know that she was bleeding though because they would have tried to get rid of it from the door. They used a Portkey to get out of here." Harry sighed looking at the two sets of shadows.

"A man and a woman" He determined "This one has a smaller foot," He gestured to the shadows on the right "And a smaller stride. That means she was doing something that needed her concentration."

"Like levitating something?"

"Exactly. The other set are from a man, much heavier, and a larger foot. He was the one who picked up the Portkey. They go further, so the Portkey must have been here." He pointed to a spot near the dead centre of the room. "Does anyone use this room?"

Lucy shook her head. "It's been out of use for months." She explained.

"So it would have been the ideal place to store a Portkey, and it would have made it easy to ambush her. Can you do me a favour, and check all Portkey records, and get a copy of all of them set for today?"

"Sure. I'll get right on it."

"Thanks."

Lucy nodded slightly, left the room and hurried down the corridor.

"Who did it?" A familiar voice asked from the door.

"Looks like Death-Eaters. Man and a woman." Harry answered, looking up at Ron.

"Why did they take her? What do they want?"

"It's obvious isn't it? Me. They want me."

"But why did they take her and not me?"

"Because you're an auror. You would have put up too much of a fight. Hermione was practically defenceless against them. They ambushed her from here."

"The bastards" Ron muttered angrily, "How did they get out of here?"

"Portkey." Harry answered simply

"Don't we have guards against that?"

"Yeah. But it they must have found a way to get around them."

"Can we track them?"

"Once we find what Portkey it was, yeah. Lucy's checking them out now."

Ron nodded and glanced fearfully at the substance on the door. "Blood?"

"Yeah. It's not much so I'm pretty sure they didn't know she was bleeding."

"OK."

"I'm telling you now Ron, when I get my hands on Voldemort, it's going to be for the last time. I'm not letting him live after what he's done to us. It's him or me."

"Well, I'll be right there with you mate, just like every other Auror in this place."

Harry nodded and smiled slightly, thanking Ron silently.

"We have her my lord" A man dressed in long, billowing green robes announced, bowing in the presence of his master.

"Excellent. No problems I trust?" Voldemort asked surveying Hermione's face closely.

"None. She did not see us, as you requested."

"Perfect. I see why Potter likes this Mudblood so much." He said as he moved a strand of bushy hair from across her pale face. "She is beautiful. Too bad we have to kill her. She would be a lot of fun." He whispered sadistically.

"Surely we do not have to kill her right away master?" The man said, not daring to look at Voldemort directly in the face.

"No." Voldemort agreed, much to the relief of the man in front of him. "Potter will come if he thinks she is still alive. He will try to save her. I want him to see his love die by my wand. Before he receives the same fate. It is simply a matter of time, and patience."

"How can you be so sure that he will come my lord?" A second man, wearing long black robes, and a mask asked quietly "Will he not know that it is a trap?"

"Oh he'll know, and he'll still come. You seem to be forgetting who this Mudblood is, why she is so important. That old fool Dumbledore has no idea that I know about the second prophecy. But I know. I know all."

"O-Of course sir. Forgive me." The death-eater whimpered shrinking away from his master.

Voldemort however didn't answer, but simply gestured for Hermione to be removed from his sight.

The death-eater seized Hermiones form roughly, and dragged her from the room.

"You are in the ministry?" Voldemort asked, staring at the flames, dancing within the fireplace.

"Yes my lord." The man answered, bowing his head.

"Return there. Before anyone becomes suspicious. You know nothing."

"Yes master. I will return at once." The man then apparated out of the room, and back into his office at the ministry.

He picked his nameplate up from his desk and grinned.

"Percy Weasley Minister for Magic." He read smugly.
