An Unexpected Question

The soft music serenaded Ginny’s ear like a sweet lullaby, creating a soothing sound to her tired ears.

It had been a long day for Ginevra Weasley and much to her dismay, she had completely forgotten it was Valentine’s Day and so had not gotten Draco anything.

To make things worse, Draco had prepared the most perfect dinner for Ginny; the remains of it still lay on the table but Ginny had not been in the mood for romantic dinners, even if it was the most delicious thing she had eaten in months.

Ginny had been fired from her job at the ministry that very day. She couldn’t understand why, but it had successfully dampened her mood for the rest of the day and even the beautiful jade bracelet Draco had given her as a valentine’s gift hadn’t cheered her up.

Now she lay resting against his chest, feeling his heart beating steadily against her, as she watched the fire burning in dancing flames in the fireplace. He placed his arms around her waist and nuzzled his head against her shoulder, giving her a quick kiss on her neck.

“Don’t worry about it, Ginny.” Draco said soothingly by her ear. “You’ll find another job.”

Ginny squeezed her eyes shut to stop the burning tears that threatened to slip from her eyes. She didn’t want to appear weak in front of Draco. It was just a job after all, but Ginny could not face the shame of having to tell everyone she had been fired.

Draco’s warm hands rubbed her back in a gentle motion, as if he could tell simply by the way she refused to look at him that she needed comfort. They had only been dating for four months but Draco could already read Ginny like an open book. Ginny could only wish she could do the same to him but she knew she was making progress.

It had been a wonder in the first place when he had asked her for their first date. Ginny had often seen Draco around the ministry or talking to her co-workers but he had never even approached her, until one day, he simply asked her on a date and to Ginny’s surprise, she said yes.

Ginny had berated herself for the rest of the day, wondering how she could have possibly accepted a date with Draco Malfoy. She did decide to meet him at the restaurant, (one they now frequented often) and had a surprisingly enjoyable evening with him.

She had come to realise they were not so different and agreed to have another date with him, which soon led to another and another…

Now it seemed Ginny could not imagine herself being with any other man. Draco had changed greatly from his Hogwarts days to become a man Ginny admired immensely. He was her strength and she had never needed his reassurance more than she did now, as she cried silently while gazing into the flames.

Ginny sniffed and turned toward Draco, burrowing her face into his shoulder, as she clutched his shirt for support. Draco placed his arms comfortingly around her and just held her, allowing her to shed her tears.

He frowned to himself, as he held Ginny in his arms. Seeing her so helpless and vulnerable made him realise he wanted to always be there to protect her, to be by her side always.

Things were only going to get harder for Ginny. She could barely pay her bills as it was and Draco had frequently urged her to let him pay them. Ginny had refused, telling him that these were her problems but Draco wanted them to be his problems too. He wanted to care for Ginny unconditionally and not always have to hold back for fear of offending her.

“Ginny.” Draco whispered, as he stroked her long flaming red hair- the hair that had captivated him all those years ago.

“Yes?” Ginny answered in a voice choked with tears.

“I love you.”

Ginny lifted her head and looked at him through those beautiful chestnut eyes, the tears still glistening on her lashes. Never had Draco spoken those words to her.

Draco leant down, kissing her lips in a small but loving kiss.

“Marry ” He whispered, as he gazed into her bewitching eyes.

Ginny could not bring herself to look away from those fiercely grey eyes. Those two simple words had changed everything and she felt like her world was slipping away into a dream land.

“This can’t be real.” Ginny couldn’t help but say, a watery smile coming to her eyes. “I must be in a dream.”

“Well, I hope it is a good dream then because I’m serious.” Draco said, smiling slightly.

Ginny laughed and threw her arms around him, pulling him into a loving embrace. She couldn’t stop the silly grin that came to her face as she hugged him tight, feeling his deep chuckle against her body, as he protested against her squeezing the life out of him.

“That’s a yes then, I take it?” Draco asked with a small smile.

“Yes!” Ginny cried with delight and kissed him on the lips. “I will marry you, Draco Malfoy.”

Draco smiled in true happiness and pulled her face towards him to press his lips softly against hers.

“Happy Valentine’s day, Ginny.” Draco murmured between kisses.

Ginny smiled, her worries now forgotten. What a Happy Valetine’s day it was indeed.

A/N: Ergh, so it is kinda cheesy and one of my worst romantic fics, but hey if you like it then sweet, lol.
