Chapter Fourteen- Wolf Senses
`Are you an Animagus?' Lupin asked, causing Hermione to gasp from beside him. Harry was feeling incredibly sick all of a sudden trying to determine what to say. Instead he nodded numbly. Lupin chuckled and put his hand out in front of Harry who shook it nervously. `Congratulations!' Harry was too shocked to speak instead Hermione spoke out.
`How did you know?' she asked unbelievingly, Lupin merely chuckled again. He pointed to his nose. `I can smell Harry, and only him, because he's a wolf. I only can smell him slightly, as he must have transformed lately and the wolf's sense is still on him. So I gather you two are Animagi also?' he asked, they both nodded, `As well as Ginny, Neville and Luna Lovegood, all the people who went to the Ministry with me.' Harry said seating him self on the table. `You won't tell anyone, will you?' he asked shakily staring up into his professor's eyes. `Of course not Harry. So, what are all your forms?' Harry, Ron and Hermione went on and told him what each of their Animagus forms were, describing them each in detail. `When and how did you do it?' he asked settling him self back in the teacher's chair. They then told him of the Room of Requirement and the many nights training and brewing the Potion. He then told them of how James, Sirius and Peter stole the ingredients from Snape's secret stash and the many times sneaking into Hogsmeade, with him as a were-wolf. Soon though they all realized they had missed almost all of Herbology.
The week passed quickly. Harry and Hermione were sitting in the library working on an assignment while Ron went to see where Luna was. Harry was working on his Potions essay on the Properties and Uses of the Everliving Draught, but was stuck on the property part. Hermione was humming reading through the latest edition of Hogwarts: A history, having finished all her homework. They hadn't spoken of the kiss they shared at the ball, instead they talked of other things, such as how Malfoy was and what a surprise that he didn't want to be a death eater. Quidditch games came, and then passed, with Gryffindor in the lead, followed closely by Slytherin, then Ravenclaw and lastly Hufflepuff. On a sunny Saturday morning the trio plus Luna decided to go down and see Hagrid, not having visited him for ages. Their dragons flew out in front of them, diving in on unsuspecting butterflies. The half giant bustled to the door, smiling broadly at them from underneath his beard. He ushered them in, shutting the door behind them, then passed them all some moldy looking sandwiches, which they all politely declined, saying they just had lunch, which they did.
`Bout time you lot came an seen me,' he said, `I `ave something for ye here, `arry.' He crossed the room and knelt down to his bed, reaching underneath it and puling out a large box. It was roughly wrapped in brown paper with odd bits of sticky tape sticking of here and there. Hagrid lifted it and strode to the table sitting it in front of Harry. `Happy Birthday, sorry it's a bit late,' Harry thanked him and moved to open the large box, gently unwrapping it and setting the paper aside. He gulped and reached forward, folding out the lid and peering cautiously inside. He gasped and looked up at Hagrid, then back down. He reached in and struggled lifting the thing out. Hermione sighed, Ron looked kind of puzzled, but Harry started to examine it. It was a black pensive, silver symbols etched around the sides. It was the exact replica of the headmasters, except a bit smaller.
`Thanks Hagrid, so much,' Harry stammered, `it would have cost heaps!' Hagrid seemed to tinge a bit red on the bits of skin showing underneath his bushy beard. `It was nothing, `arry, Professor Dumbledore said that yeh were havin` dreams so I thought that'll be helpful to show someone, its nuthin much,' later on they left, with Harry's pensive placed safely in the box in his arms. There was a Hogsmeade weekend coming up at the end of the week, so they all decided to split up in different groups and go around. Harry and Hermione were going together. Leaving Ron and Luna to go by themselves. There were many couples walking amongst the students in the bustling streets of Hogsmeade that day, all walking hand in hand chatting comfortably together. Hermione and Harry went into Flourish and Blotts looking up some reading material to study for their NEWT classes. Harry reluctantly buying a few books on advanced studying for Potions, charms and Transfiguration even though he was the top of them classes, except Potions. They walked in the door to The Three Broomsticks, noticing that almost all the tables were full. The quickly made their way over to a table near the door, trying to get there before anyone else did, which they managed easily as they were right next to it. They spotted Ron and Luna at a back table chatting merrily about some unknown thing. They ordered some Butterbeer and began talking of what they were going to do after school.
`I hope I manage to get enough NEWTS to be an Auror, but if I don't, I could always be a teacher at Hogwarts,' began Harry, `So…have you decided upon what you want to do after school?' he asked, Hermione answered immediately.
`Yes,' she said, `I want to be a Transfiguration Professor at Hogwarts. Professor McGonagall told me the other day that I had great potential for transfiguration and would go far as a teacher,' she sipped her Butterbeer thoughtfully, `And just think, if you can't be an auror or don't want to, we would be working together!' a cheerful expression came upon her face, her eyes shining with anticipation. Harry smiled at the thought of seeing Hermione everyday when they weren't actually attending school. A while later they re-entered the street, but a large jolt in the ground almost caused them to topple over. They stared curiously up the street, but immediately wished they hadn't. Many buildings were alight; smoke seeping from their tops, people were running around screaming. They took a few steps forward but someone collided with them knocking them to the ground, Harry regained his footing helping Hermione up and looked at the person scrambling up top their feet. It was Lavender, she had a long gash across her head, blood was running freely down her cheeks, mingling with tears and sticking in her hair.
`Please help, help, death eaters,' she said running away joining the fleeing crowd. Harry had panic in his body now as many black cloaked people apparated in front of the fleeing people, sending spells in every direction. Harry and Hermione jumped into action, firing spells at the death eaters and blocking the ones fired at them. Ron and Luna joined them soon, as well as Ginny and Neville. They formed a group, looking out for each other and firing spells at unsuspecting death eaters trying to protect the others. Many bodies lay in the streets of both students of the school and the dark lords supporters. Others joined Harry and his friends in defending them selves, by taking out the death eaters. Neville was hit with a stunner from behind, as was Luna. Death eaters kept appearing, setting fire to the shops and taking down the people running away.
Something dropped beside Harry, but before he could register what it was it exploded, sending the crew into opposite directions. Harry smashed up against the wall, dust and bits of rubble falling on top of him. He coughed out blood, swiping at his bleeding cheek. The dust settled around him, blinding him. He had lost his wand when the thing exploded, leaving him defenseless. A form appeared in the dust, slowly coming clearer, their face masked. They laughed mercifully from beneath the mask, and raised their wand. Harry launched him self out of the way as a spell whizzed passed his head colliding with the wall behind. He tried to stand but his ankle collapsed under him. The form appeared in front of him once more, laughing more loudly.
`Master will be very pleased to know that we have you now, Potter,' he said with an unrecognizable accent, `your petty friends can not save you now, they are all stunned or dead,' he laughed shrilly again making Harry shudder but anger to boil in his veins. `WHAT DO YOU WANT?' Harry yelled menacingly. Another round of cackling laughter erupted through the death eater's mask, `It's not what I want, but what the Dark Lord wants, and he wants you.' Harry wasn't fast enough to dodge the stunning spell that he sent at him, he fell to the ground, out cold.
Voices echoed through his head, reverberating into his skull. His head was throbbing painfully, mainly coming from his scar. The voices got clearer, as something was jammed into his ribs. He yelped in pain, his eyes clenched shut. He heard a voice, a spell as a pain swept through his body like white hot knives piercing into his flesh. It stopped leaving a numbing pain all over his body. He slowly opened his eyes; darkness surrounded him, blinding for some reason. Blurred shapes surrounded him; someone placed his glasses upon his face, as everything came into focus. It seemed as though he was in a kind of dungeon, chains were wrapped around his legs, arms and chest, cutting into his skin. Three figured stood before him, their faces still masked as death eaters, but laughter rang through the room, echoing off the dark walls. They parted as a fourth strode forward, showing a face that haunted his dreams. Lord Voldemort stood before him, smiling wickedly through his none existing lips, his red eyes gleaming through chalklike skin.
`So nice to have you awake, Harry Potter. Now, why don't you tell me what the rest of the prophecy hold, because I know you know,' Harry spat forcefully upon his robes, gaining a scowl from the man in front of him, `Now, now, no need to be like that. If you don't tell me, you know I can get it if you tell me or not,' Flashes of memories flashed through his mind, memories of the feared kind. But he struggled, only showing the ones he treasured. When he and Hermione kissed, when she hugged him, when all three of them were together, laughing. They stopped. He gazed upon Voldemort, his face bare from any emotion, `please don't do that again,' he said, as the memories started again. Harry struggled to show only happy ones, but he couldn't, he was in too much pain. Soon he was in the head masters office, throwing his possessions around the room. Then he stood before Sybil Trelawney in the pensive. “NO!” he thought fiercefully, shoving Voldemort out of his mind, using the picture of Hermione, and his feelings. Suddenly he was viewing flashed of someone else's memories. He saw a quivering man before him, a look off fear evident on his face. He was standing in Hogsmeade, watching happily as a man was shot down with a Crucio Curse But he was pushed out, left panting and in pain, his scar burning madly.
He looked upon Voldemort in front of him, panting as well, clearly unhappy. `Fine, Potter, I will find another way to seek what I want, torture him until he gives in.' after that he strode from the room, shoving the nearest death eater into the wall. Harry glared at the three people before the chair he was sitting in, advancing towards him, wands a ready. He sighed and shut his eyes, as curse upon curse was laid upon him, all of the Crucius Curse. His body ached and throbbed of pain, his breath came in gasps after the first ten minutes. He tried piteously not to scream out in pain. He soon lost track of time, but never faltering his mind shield, in case Voldemort sprang upon him seeking into his memories. In his time in this hell he thought of all his friends that were in Hogsmeade when it was attacked and hoped against hope that they all survived. He thought of Hermione and Ron, his friends of six years and pleaded that they were alright. His captors continued to torture him, but he never spoke, never uttered a word. He kept his mouth tight shut as he writhed on his chair, against his chains, white hot knives again stabbing him. This went on for three days, although Harry knew nothing of the time or days. He was brought a piece of bread and a glass of water once a day, along with a considerable amount of the Crucio Curse.
Harry had devised a plan. When the death eaters left to report to their master they shut the door, bolting it locked from the out side. But they also left it guarded by two death eaters, as Harry has heard them talking through the walls. When they left he would transform in to his wolf form and get out of his bindings. So when the death eaters left one time, he set to action. He transformed into his animagus form, sliding out of the chains and leaping to the floor. He began to pace thinking off what to do, finally he decided to attack them when they returned, and run out. So when he heard foot steps approaching his prison he set to action. He crouched in the corner closest to the door, hidden in the shadows, undetectable. When the door opened and two death eaters strode in they looked at the empty chair in bewilderment, gazing around the room in astonishment. Harry leapt out of the door, upon a death eater standing out side, he yelped in surprise, but Harry bit deep into his neck than bolted. He ran quickly along a stone corridor, torches hung in brackets upon the stone, setting an eerie glow in the darkness. He kept sprinting in the darkness, loosing hearing of the footsteps behind him. He came to a large metal door, bolted shut. He quickly transformed and pushed it open, coming to stairs. He ran up them as a wolf than opened more metal doors at the top as a human. They opened into a large kitchen, pos and pans hung from the ceiling from chains. Harry leapt upon an unsuspecting death eater smoking a pipe over the sink. He ran down a hall way, halting in a large ball room, many doors branched off in all directions. He decided to take a double door, quickly opening it then transforming back and sprinting into an entrance hall.
Harry skidded to a halt as he spotted at least seven death eaters crowded around two large front doors. They hadn't spotted him yet, so he crept into the shadows. He glanced out of a window to his right. Moonlight shone through, gleaming onto marble flooring. His heart pounded against his ribs, his head and whole body ached and throbbed in pain. He felt as if some of his ribs were broken, he tasted blood in his mouth. Suddenly footsteps came pounding down the hall way he just ran from as five death eaters appeared, two bleeding severely. Harry's heart missed a beat as they announced I had escaped and am in the form as a wolf. He glanced at a window opposite him, then at the one to his right. It was too small to get through, so he looked back at the one opposite him. It was quite large, opening out upon a yard and houses reaching down a hill. He took a deep breath and began to sprint as fast and silently as he could. When he was about three-quarters the way there he heard the death eaters shout as spells began firing past him. He dodged them easily, finally reaching the window. He sprang and smashed through the glass, he felt a searing pain ion his arm but kept bounding down the lawn, seeing red and green lights flash passed him. He came to the road and bolted down it, hearing foot steps behind him, so he forced him self to go faster. He ran down an alley way, merging into the shadows. He continued running, never ceasing. He ran through large fields, occasionally seeing death eater's apparate a fair way off, but he never stopped to look back. He came to a large forest, jumping into the trees, sprinting through bushes and wading through water. He bounded over rocks and logs, stumbling occasionally but always regaining his footing.
He slowed down a bit, just trotting at a fair pace, still in the forest. He hadn't rested yet, or even rested since he left. He had stopped and drunken from a string, but that was all. Soon he spotted a cave jutting into a cliff-like hill. He slowly climbed up to it, finding foot holes occasionally. He dragged him self into it deeply, making sure no other life was in it and checking for death eaters from the opening. Finally seeing that it was all ok, he curled himself up into a ball in a far corner, still as a wolf and had a restless sleep, plagued with nightmares. He arose early in the afternoon, setting out again. He didn't know where he was, but decided to keep following this scent he could smell coming from the east. So he set off, seldom finding mice and rabbits, which he reluctantly ate. He traveled for over a week, eating of wild life and sleeping less and less. Finally he came to the end of the forest, looking out upon large rolling hills, and meadows. He quickly glanced around, but decided to wait until sunset before setting out across the open. When the sun was setting he bounded down the hills, keeping an eye out for any movement. He soon caught sight off a distant town, just to the east, maybe that was where the scent was coming from, he thought. So he set off, finally reaching it before the sun rose. He padded down the empty streets, keeping to the shadows.
But when the sun was raising Harry felt something slip around his neck. He struggled immensely, but looked up into the face off a dog catcher, holding a long stick with a loop of string wrapped around his neck. He was dragged into the back of a van, then into a cage. He fought against the cages metal bars, but to no avail. When the van halted to a stop he was hoisted into a large building marked: POUND. Harry gulped as he was shunt into a large cage, other dogs barked around him as the dogcatcher gazed upon him through the cage.
`That's a wolf, that is,' he said to a man appearing beside him, `He's got weird markings as well. You see on his head, it looks like a lightning bolt and his eyes, they're strange for a wolf.' The other man gazed upon him too. `So what do we do with him, Barn?' the other man asked his companion, he shook his head. `I don't know, Steve. He's a wild animal, maybe if we give him to the Zoo, or set him free?' Harry's jaw hung open at the thought of being shut up in a Zoo. He immediately collapsed, pretending to be sick. He yelped in pain, shivering and pawing for help. One of the fellows ran quickly away, saying something about grabbing something to help the poor thing. The other one began to unlock the door, but as soon as he opened it wide enough Harry sprang out, over the top off him and sprinted down the row of kennels. Passed the barking dogs and out into the fresh air. Cars now drove down the streets; people were bustling in the streets. The crown screamed when Harry bolted through them shouting, “WILD ANIMAL”. Harry spotted a truck driving slowly passed him with an open back. He bounded into the back, not being spotted by the driver. He lay in the back, upon bails of hay. The scent got stronger as the tuck moved eastward more. Night fell and passed and still the truck drove on. The scent soon got very strong until it felt as though he was eating it. He jumped from the back of the truck into a muddy puddle. It had begun to rain, it was pouring down, almost hailing. Harry shivered as he trotted through mud following the scent. He looked around and soon realized with a happy jolt that he was standing outside a dingy old pub, a very familiar dingy old pub. He slowly trotted up to the door and pushed it open, transforming in the process. The pub was silent as he traipsed to the counter, the old bar man looked at him fearfully.
`Mr. Potter, what happened to you?' he asked frightfully. Harry just shook his head. `Could I use some floo powder and the fireplace, please?' he groaned almost collapsing for real. The barman nodded quickly, grabbing some powder from a small bowel on the counter and pointing to the fire place in the corner. Harry took the powder and dragged him self over to the blazing fire. He through the green powder in and watched the flames turn the same color. He stepped in, feeling the warm flames flicker across his body. `Headmaster's Office, Hogwarts!” he stammered clamping his eyes tight shut, flying through the fire place. HE felt himself tumble through the flames and hit hard ground. He lifted himself off his stomach and gazed around the office. It was bare, the headmaster wasn't there but his phoenix was. Fawkes glided over to him, landing on the floor in front of his face. Harry smiled warmly at it, `Could you go get Dumbledore please, Fawkes?' Harry asked softly and was granted by a small soft whistle as it disappeared with a swirl of flame.
Harry pulled himself off the ground and dropped into his chair in front of the headmaster's desk, closing his eyes for the first time in ages. A moment later Fawkes appeared in midair, gliding down to his shoulder. A second after that the door to the headmaster's office opened and Professor Dumbledore appeared a surprised look upon his face. He rushed towards him, as Harry's world became black.

Harry was having a peaceful sleep; he was lying in a soft bed, with soft light surrounding him. Soft voices filled his ears, almost as if it was singing. Everything was soft, even his own thoughts were soft. He wanted to lie there for ages, not wanting to face the harsh world, but he knew he must. He slowly opened his eyes, the soft light, not soft when it was blinding him. The singing stopped as something cold was placed on his nose and everything came into perspective. He was in a white room, a large window on one side, and a door on the other. He had never been here before, but it seemed vaguely familiar. There was a rustle on the door side as a large amount of bushy brown hair was thrust into his face. Water began to splutter onto his face. Hermione raised her head, her eyes crying salty tears, and bags under her eyes. Harry smiled kindly up at her, which she returned. Footsteps came into hearing as the door opened and a bunch of red heads walked in. each of them in turn gasped and rushed forward. Professor Dumbledore was amongst them, a twinkle in his eyes. Harry tried to sit up, but Hermione pushed him back down.
`Stay there Harry. You need to rest for longer,' she murmured a look of concern on her face, `Where am i?' he muttered gazing around at everyone. `You're at Mungo's, Harry,' answered Ron, smiling slightly. Harry nodded numbly, aware of everyone staring at him. `Why are all you staring at me?' he asked rubbing his forehead weakly. Immediately they all looked away, except Hermione, Professor Dumbledore and Molly Weasley, who was accompanied by Ginny, Fred, George and Arthur, all were looking at the ground, occasionally looking up. `Well,' began Dumbledore, `You vanished for almost two weeks after Hogsmeade,' Harry gasped, `We were searching for you everywhere, Harry. But we couldn't find a trace of where you went. The, you turned up three days ago, in my office and sent Fawkes to find me. We are waiting to find out how you managed this, but we will wait until another time. Right now you need a bit more rest, as do all of us, then we will tell you everything, and if you will, tell us everything.' Harry nodded slowly, snuggling down into the covers of his bed.
The rest of them left, leaving Harry alone in his room. Hermione had wanted to stay but Harry told her to get some rest and clean up, she reluctantly left promising to come back as soon as he awoke. A few hours later Harry awoke, not having much sleep but feeling very refreshed. The others returned a little while later listening intently as Harry filled them in on the details. They gasped and sighed in all the right places, and at the end it was Dumbledore's turn to speak.
`Well, Harry, that is very interesting indeed. Very interesting, so you are an Animagus?' he asked a twinkle in his eyes. Harry nodded slowly, `Great, so you managed to escape once again, you are highly lucky, and you didn't even have you wand, because I have it,' the professor placed Harry's wand on a bedside table smiling warmly. `You have been placed in St Mungo's for two reasons. Firstly, your injuries out stripped Poppies healing methods and secondly your friends demanded it, to make sure you got better faster' his eyes twinkled brightly at the two friends standing closely to Harry's bed, awaiting everything he spoke. Harry smiled warmly. `You had many broken ribs, a broken wrist, a sprained ankle and severe bruises, possibly from the Crucius Curse. Also you were dehydrated and needed feeding, so we thought it best for you to come here. You should be ready to come back to school in a couple of days, until then have fun and get better, as I have to go back to school and report to say that you are feeling much better. Good day,' he smiled happily before disappearing with a pop. The remainder of the day and the following days were spent chatting with the Weasley's and Hermione about anything that came to mind. Soon it was time for Harry to come back to school. They said goodbye to Mrs. Weasley at the hospital and used floo to get back to the school. They came out in Dumbledore's office, and met the headmaster. He ushered them down stairs, and into the Great Hall. Many students looked at Harry, whispering as he sat down with his friends at the Gryffindor Table. Dumbledore stood at the staff table, the hall immediately coming to silence.
`Please welcome back Harry Potter after he was kidnapped by Lord Voldemort, but he escaped and now he's back.' A great wave of murmuring washed over the tables, `Now, now, classes today have been canceled for Mr. Potter's good fortune. But school resumes tomorrow, bright and early. Good day, Mr. Potter could I see you in my office.' Harry followed the head master up the revolving stairs into his office. They sat down in the usual seats, but Professor Dumbledore's pensive was sitting on the desk in front of him.
`Harry, would you be able to place your thoughts of you capture into the pensive, so I can see where Voldemort would be hiding?' Harry nodded and stood up to the pensive. `Just place your wand tip to your temple and think of your thoughts you want to extract, then pull your wand away imagining your thoughts going with them, then place them into the pensive. Harry nodded and did what he was told, watching the silvery threads coming out of his head and into the pensive. The silver mist swirled around in it as he and Dumbledore watched Harry's memories replay. When it was over Dumbledore quickly strode to the fire then turned to Harry, `I must go, I know where that house is, it is the Riddle House,' he then stepped into the fire and wisped away in a whoosh of green flame.
