Chapter Nine-Ambushed and Animagi

Harry's heart was beating quickly; it was thumping in his throat, catching his breath in his chest. He looked around. There were five Death Eaters four of them were holding back Ron and Hermione. Harry stepped back, but not before the fifth Death Eater moved forward from behind, and clasped onto Harry's shoulders.

"What do you want, Malfoy?" Harry spat, escape plans flashed through his head, finally ending on one. Malfoy snickered in the darkness before them.

"Now, now, Potter. Where have your manners gone, perhaps we should teach you a lesson in being polite.” He held up his wand to Harry's chest, a sickening grin planted on his face, “Crucio!” Hot burning knives dug into Harry's body, he held his breath, trying not to scream in agony. The Death Eater holding him, kept him up, not letting him shrivel up on the ground. The pain stopped. “Have you learnt your lesson now, Potter?” Harry stared up at the formidable expression on Malfoy's pale face. The aftermath of the Crucius Curse still hung about on his body, but he forced him self to stare into those grey eyes.

“I asked you, what do you want Malfoy?” He spat again, trying to signal to Ron and Hermione, by glancing up at the dazed form of Grawp, towering in the trees above them. Hermione finally got the hint. Malfoy laughed again, but beckoned one of the Death Eaters holding Hermione forward. The masked Death Eater moved forward and reached up to the mask, then pulled it off. Anger boiled through his body as he looked at the hollowed face of Bellatrix Lestrange. An identically evil grin spread across her face. She twiddled her wand in her fingers, staring animatedly at Harry.

“Oh poor, poor, Harry. Lost in the woods, with no-one but his little friends. He doesn't even have his poor old god father any more.” She laughed loudly, evilly, causing Grawp to shuffle above them. A light flicked on in Harry's head.

“Oh, I forgot you didn't know, Lestrange. But your poor old cousin is alive. And if you didn't realise, me and my poor friends escaped from you last time. Don't feel too hard on your self, but I think you're the poor one lost in the woods.” He forced a smirk on his face. Bellatrix's smile vanished.

“What do you mean? He's alive? He fell through the Veil; no-one can escape from the other realm.” Her voice had lost its glint of happiness now.

“What's wrong scared. Look at that she's scared.” Her face drained of blood; she rushed forward and pointed her wand at Harry's throat.

“Don't play games, Potter. If the Dark Lord didn't need you, you would be mine,” She whispered this roughly, but another evil smiled landed on her lips, “But the dark Lord doesn't need your little friends does he?” Harry's heart dropped as she wandered over to Ron and Hermione. “Which one to die first, hmmm….” She closed her eyes and began twirling it through the air, landing it on Hermione. When she opened them up again she laughed mercifully. “Ooh, Harry's little girl friend gets to die first.” Hermione gasped and grew white. Harry struggled with his captor.

“NO!” But it was no good; she had already begun saying the killing curse.

“Avarda Ked…….” But she didn't get to finished as a giant, grey hand emerged from above, clasping its fingers tightly around Bellatrix's body.

“Hermy, NO!” Grawp held the struggling, and screaming Death Eater in his grubby hand, looking at her curiously. This was Harry's chance as everyone's attention was directed at the giant. He pulled out of the death eaters grasp, and launched him self at Malfoy, knocking him off his feet. He struggled with his hand holding their wands, and pulled them out. He pointed his own at Malfoy and yelled the disarming spell. His wand flew out of his hand and landed on the ground a few metres away, where Grawp stepped on it. The other four Death Eaters raised their wands at Harry but he darted behind a tree, where the spells hit it. He started shouting stupify at the top of his lungs blindly from behind the tree rewarded with a yell. There was some muffled screams a pop, and a couple of thumps from behind the tree. But then silence. Harry's heart beat in his chest, racing. There were footsteps advancing to the tree, he was about to yell some more curses when Hermione's voice broke the silence.

“Harry? You can come out” She sounded shaken. Harry peered cautiously out from behind the tree. Ron and Hermione stood a few feet away; there were no Death Eaters to be seen, only Hagrid's limp form lying on the ground. Harry stepped out, glancing nervously around.

“Where did they go?” He asked his voice cracked a bit.

“Grawp took Bellatrix and grabbed the other two. But Malfoy and the other one Disapparated.” Ron answered, nervously.

“Are you two alright?” They both nodded. Harry ran over to Hagrid's form, still in the same position. He was followed by the others. He was still breathing barely; the blood had stopped running and had dried.

“We better go, “Harry stood and spoke a spell. Hagrid's body levitated, as they began there track back to school. After about twenty minutes the trees began to thin. Sunlight drifted brightly through the gaps, as they stepped out into the Hogwarts grounds. Harry looked around. No-one was out, the grounds were bare except for a small group of students standing huddled out side Hagrid's cabin, waiting for their lesson to begin. One of them spotted the trio and the half-giants levitated form. She shrieked and ran towards them. Harry told her to run up to the castle and get professor Dumbledore. She bolted up the grounds and disappeared into the castle. Harry, Ron and Hermione lay Hagrid on the grass, the other students milled around. Hermione ran into Hagrid's cabin, and came out a moment later carrying a towel and bucket of water. She began sponging the giants face, the water soon turned red. Harry glanced up at the castle; four figures had emerged and walked quickly towards them. As they drew closer he identified Dumbledore, McGonagall, Madam Pomfrey and the girl he had sent to get them.

Madam Pomfrey immediately began saying spells as bandages sprung around Hagrid's arms and head. She stood and levitated his form, looking sternly at Harry and the others before moving up towards the castle, Hagrid's figure in tow. Dumbledore followed her figure until it disappeared in the castle, then he looked down at the trio. He smiled slightly, but the twinkle in his eyes had gone.

“Would you three please come up to my office, now? The rest of you's may leave; you will have a free period.” The clatter soon died away, as the three friends and Dumbledore made their way through the grounds and into the school. They walked silently through the corridors finally coming to a halt out side a stone Gargoyle. Dumbledore muttered the password Fake Wands, before leading the others up the spiralling staircase, the wall closing behind them. Inside his office, he ushered them into seats, before sitting down himself. He looked at them through his half moon glasses before speaking.

“I would like you three to tell me exactly what happened today in the forest.” Harry began telling him about Grawp and his dream, ending when Dumbledore found them in the grounds. The Headmaster sighed, then made his way to the cabinet that held the Penseive. He extract three white strands before seating him self again.

“You three have got into more trouble in your six years here than all the other students combined and saved many lives, many more than you will ever know. Ron, Hermione, you may go, you's may have the rest of the day off. Harry, may I have a word?” Ron and Hermione say good bye and walked out, leaving the headmaster and Harry behind.

“Harry, I would like you to continue with Occulumcey with professor Snape. And would you be able to try a bit harder this time?” Dumbledore smiled thoughtfully, Harry nodded, he already knew that he wanted him to continue Occulumcey, “Thank you. Now I would like to ask you and Hermione to organise another meeting with the DA. Many students have learnt more spells in your club than in the proper Defence classes. You may still use the Room of Requirement if you like, or you can have another classroom, what ever pleases you?” Harry thought for a moment.

“Would it be ok if we still use the Room of Requirement?” Dumbledore nodded.

“Harry, I would like to ask, have you told anyone else about the Prophecy?” Harry shook his head.

“I didn't want to sacrifice their lives, in case Voldemort or someone got hold of them, and they got tortured for the information.” Dumbledore nodded in agreement. “Can I go now, sir?” asked Harry, hoping he could.

“Yes, you may go Harry. But I would like to ask you, Ron and Hermione to stay inside if you are not in lessons?” Harry nodded and said goodbye, walking out, and down to the hospital wing. Inside Ron and Hermione were sitting outside a drawn curtain in silence. When he walked in they stood and had grim expressions on their faces. Harry's heart dropped.

“Madam Pomfrey won't let us in. She said he needed rest and to heal more efficiently.” Ron said glancing sadly to the curtain. At that moment the healing nurse walked out from behind the curtain, when she spotted them a stern expression crept onto her face. She shooed them away angrily, saying he needed peace and quiet, and to come back later. The three of them walked silently to the common room, and slouched into chairs beside the fire.

“I wonder what Grawp did with the Death Eaters?” Hermione asked, nervously.

I really don't care,” Harry said angrily, closing his eyes and rubbing his scar. It had been throbbing since he left the forest. The portrait opened as students bustled in, dropping off their bags, and heading back down for dinner. The three of them stood and followed the others down, having missed lunch already. The Great Hall was already packed when they entered, and many heads turned their way as they sat at the Gryffindor table.

“I wonder how many people that class have told.” Murmured Harry to Hermione on his left. She nodded her head slightly, glancing around at the turning heads. Dumbledore stood at the staff table and the clatter died down.

“Under certain circumstances that have occurred today,” His eyes rested on Harry, Ron and Hermione a second, “I would like no student, at any time, to go out into the grounds, unless for class,” great babbles of talk broke loose, but silenced when Dumbledore held up his hand, “he Care of Magical Creatures classes will be taken by Professor Grubbly-plank as our former professor is recovering, from an attack. There also will be a Hogsmeade weekend in three weeks, on October Forth. That is all, you may eat.” He took his seat as the plates and tables filled with food. Harry reached forwards and got some small amounts of food, as did Hermione but Ron stayed where he was, eyes blank, staring at the table.

“What's up, Ron?” Harry said realising something must be wrong if he wasn't eating. He just shook his head and reached for a bread roll, nibbling on it. Harry looked at Hermione and shrugged, as she did the same. After dinner they made their way up-stairs, back to the common room. Ron walked straight up to the boys dormitories, with out saying good night to any one. Harry and Hermione ignored him, figuring he was just shaken from the battle in the forest. They began working on a schedule dor the DA; starting with what days they'd have it on.

“How about every Tuesday and Friday? That way it doesn't interfere with any houses Quidditch practices.” Hermione suggested after working it out on the parchment in front of her.

“Yeah, that'll be good. But, what are we going to teach this year?” Harry answered and asked, running his fingers through his hair.

“Well how about duelling? I know we've learnt it before, but not proper duelling.” Harry nodded remembering the short lessons that they had before.

“What about Patronus's?” He asked remembering last year's feeble attempts. “They all seemed eager to do it, and I think they should learn about them a bit more, what do you think?” Hermione thought for a moment them nodded, a curious look on her face.

“Harry?” said Hermione.

“Yes,”

“Have you ever thought about becoming Animagi?” She asked looking intently at him. He sat for a second, and then before she could ask he rushed up stairs, returning a few minutes later with a book clamped in his hands. He shoved it at Hermione, whose face lit up with astonishment.

“Harry, where'd you get this, and when?” She asked quickly opening the book, and flicking through the pages.

“In the holidays, at Sirius's, I forgot about it until now.” He said truthfully, looking at her enthusiasm.

“So you have thought about it then, I mean, actually thought about it?” She said looking around at the empty common room.

“Yes, I have. Ever since I heard about Sirius and my dad becoming one, I've wanted to.” He leant back in his chair, ruffling his hair with his hand, remembering seeing his dad do it before. “So, do you think we should try and do it, I mean, like they did, illegally, so no-one else knows?” HE said wondering what her answer would be to breaking the law. Her face looked blank a moment before smiling largely.

“Of course!” Harry stared at her unbelievingly. “Well, I've done more dangerous and illegal things with you, than I have I my whole life, and becoming an Animagus would be really helpful.” Harry smirked at her.

“Well I'm going to bed, I'll see you in the morning, we'll tell Ron, then, ok, good night.” She stood and smiled at him, before walking up to the girls dormitories. Harry shook his head and headed up to his own dorm.

The next morning at breakfast, Harry and Hermione informed Ron of their plans. His face lit up, a dramatic change from yesterday. Harry grinned at his friends returning happiness.

“So, when are we going to do it?” He asked enthusiastically.

“Well, we have to get a book, where it shows the potion. Then we'll have to get the ingredients, and find a place to do it.” Hermione answered keeping her voice down to a mere whisper. “We can go to the restricted section in the library one night, under Harry's invisibility cloak to find the proper book.” She whispered.

“Can we do it tonight?” Ron said a little too loudly, because Neville, who was sitting beside Ron, turned and face them.

“Do what tonight? You better not be doing anything dangerous, because if you are, I want to come.” Harry glanced at Hermione, who nodded, he then looked at Ron who smirked and nodded as well.

“Well, Neville, you can do it as well. Meet as in the common room tonight, after dinner, don't say anything to anyone.” Neville looked curiously between the three friends and smiled.

“Thank you guys. I promise.”

The day flew by without any thing exciting happening. They visited Hagrid at the Hospital wing, but they still weren't allowed to see him, and were shooed away once again by Madam Pomfrey. Dinner came and went and soon Harry, Hermione and Ron were seated in armchairs around the fire. Neville joined them a while later, sweating.

“Sorry, I tripped down the stairs; I came as quickly as I could run back up them.” He slumped into a chair next to Ron. “So what are we doing?” Harry shushed him, glancing around nervously, but it was too late, a red head was heading their way, a curious look on her face.

“Yeah, that's a good question, what are you's doing.” Ginny sat down next to Hermione, a smile on her face. Harry looked at Ron, who nodded once again, as did Hermione. He sighed.

“Alright, but be quiet,” He whispered silently, “Me, Ron and Hermione were deciding to become Animagi.” Neville and Ginny, gasped and then both smiled.

“Wicked,” was Neville's response, but Ginny just sat amazed.

“Right, do you's want to do it with us?” Harry asked.

“Hell yes,” This time it was Ginny and Neville sat nodding his head vigorously.

“Well that's sorted, where are we going to do it all?” They all sat for a while thinking, before Neville spoke.

“How about the Room of Requirement?” Harry thought about it.

“Brilliant Neville, if we walk passed that corridor thinking of all the ingredients and a book, as well as a proper set up, it should work!” Harry said, amazed at Neville's brilliance. Neville's face went bright red.

“Excellent, that'll cut out a lot of work. When should we do it?” Hermione asked, looking intently at them all. Ron spoke.

“Hey, do you's think we should ask Luna, since it was us six who went to the Department of Mysteries last year.” Asked Ron, Harry and Hermione glanced at each other before nodding.

“All in favour of asking Luna to join us raise your hand.” Everyone's hand went in the air. “Good, now Ginny could you tell Luna tomorrow?” Ginny nodded, “We'll meet in the Library tomorrow at lunch, ok? Harry asked, everyone nodded. “Well we'll see you all tomorrow, then?” He stood with Ron and Hermione, they all said good night and went their opposite ways, Hermione and Ginny to their dorms, and Harry, Ron and Neville to the sixth year dormitories.
