Chapter Two- Practice Makes Perfect
“Now, come on Harry, you can do better than that!” yelled Sirius.
They had spent two hours already out in the morning sun trying to teach Harry how to work the large, black motorbike. So far all he had accomplished was to give Lupin a very sore elbow and cracked a few mossy bricks outside The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. Sirius placed a silencing charm over the narrow alley they were using, as well as an invisibility spell. Hermione looked on in terror, clutching at her mouth with her sharp fingernails, leaving imprints in her skin. Ron was whooping by the sideline, while Draco was chatting with Ginny, clearly bored. “Watch it, Harry!” yelled Sirius, diving out of the way as Harry clutched at the handlebars a little too fiercely; slamming into a large trash can, toppling rotten newspapers all over the ground.
They turned in at lunch, Harry finally able to steer and control the bike in a safe manor. Molly Weasley served them fish and chips, glaring at Sirius. “I don't see why you're teaching Harry to ride that thing, as I will not allow him to ride it by himself at all! It is far too dangerous!” Sirius mimicked her while she turned to scoop more crispy chips onto Draco's plate. The others stifled laughs, but quickly straightened their faces when the mother Weasley snapped her eyes to them.
Hermione's early birthday party was drawing closer, and Harry still hadn't purchased her a gift yet. He had no idea what to buy his girlfriend who was soon to become a fully fledged witch in the Wizarding World. He decided to seek council with his godfather, who shrugged his shoulders.
“I dunno mate, I never really stuck to the one girl. But there was one; I was with her for almost all my seventh year and a year after school. Me, James and Lily always went on double dates. Then they got married. I was planning on proposing to her just after you were born but one thing lead to another and she disappeared on Halloween the night………” he trailed off, shrugging his shoulders. “I got her some roses and a stuffed bear for her birthday, she liked them alright!” Harry sighed, still having no idea.
“What was her name?” he asked, curious to know more about Sirius's life when he was out of school. A sad expression dawned on his godfathers face.
“Her name was Jasmine, and was Lily's best friend.” Harry smiled. Both his mother and mother's best friend had names of flowers. “She had long, light brown hair that was slightly wavy. I can still remember the smell of her perfume and the dazzling blue of her eyes!” Sirius sighed. Harry moaned, running his fingers through his hair. Sirius caught sight of this action and a great longing flashed in his eyes.
“You remind me so much of James when you do that,” he said softly and sadly, smiling slightly. He placed a hand on Harry's shoulder and squeezed it briefly. “I'm sure Hermione will love whatever you get her.” With that he smiled and walked from the room, leaving a very frustrated Harry behind. What would Hermione like for her birthday?
The big day was drawing nearer and it found Harry pacing his now finished bedroom. The walls were a dark crimson with golden skirting boards. The floor was covered in mahogany floorboards, shining in the light coming from the drawn curtains of gold. Harry's bed was a double one with a spread which changed color with the occupant's mood. Sirius had picked it up in Diagon Alley, thinking it would be helpful when Harry is asleep to tell if he was having a nightmare or not. Right now it was a shade of green-grey, it didn't go too well with the Gryffindor colored room. Ron had refused to sleep in his room if it wasn't orange, so they had spent the good part of the previous day painting his room, then moving on to the other rooms. Draco threatened to rip up the floorboards again if his room wasn't Slytherin colors and Hermione wanted hers to be periwinkle blue. Ginny took Hermione and Draco's lead by making them paint her room a very lurid pink.
Sirius was getting annoyed.
There was a soft knock on the door. Harry told them to enter. Lupin appeared, hiding something beneath an old, white sheet. Harry peered at it curiously. Lupin smiled warmly.
“Padfoot told me of your dilemma and I decided to try and help you out.” He placed the object on Harry's dresser beneath a framed photograph of Harry and his parents when he was a baby. Moony had enlarged it for him. The sheeted thing gave off a soft hoot. Harry moved forwards, clasping a corner of the sheet. He yanked it off, being startled to find a golden barred cage. Inside was a soft brown screech owl, its large amber eyes were wise and all knowing. It looked just like Hermione; it was beautiful. It cocked its head to the side and hooted smartly letting off a small cluck. Harry turned to Lupin his mouth in a large grin. He hugged the man lovingly.
“Thanks, Moony, she's perfect! How much was she?” Harry asked, pulling out a small bag form his top draw. Moony shook his head as well as his hands.
“That doesn't matter, Harry!”
“Nonsense it doesn't matter!” Harry answered pulling out ten galleons, thinking that was enough. He dumped the coins into Moony's top pocket, grinning broadly. Lupin shook his head amusedly, saying a goodbye and leaving the room. Harry whooped. He had a present for Hermione, and it was perfect!
They had arranged the party for Hermione as they wouldn't be able to throw her a party for her at school. But being the smart witch she was, had figured it out that they were throwing her a surprise party the day before. She had a small smile on her face when she entered the darkened kitchen on the morning of August the ninth. She flicked on the light and laughed when everyone jumped out at her, yelling happy birthday. The faces fell when they saw she wasn't as surprised as Harry was. But all the same, she enjoyed it just as much as her boyfriend did. She was startled at first when she was given the golden cage of her new pet by Harry. She stuck her finger in the cage and tickled the owl under its chin.
“Oh Harry, she's beautiful!” she exclaimed, hugging him tightly. Harry blushed, “Lupin picked her out! I had no idea what to get you!” but she didn't care. She had received many books from everyone, as well as a study diary from Draco, with him saying, “I know how much you love work!” Ron had, reluctantly, agreed to not comment on this answer or present, he just gritted his teeth and smiled painfully.
“What are you going to name your new pet, Hermione?” asked Lupin, sensing danger. Hermione scrunched up her face in thought.
“I'm not sure. I've already got two cats, Mellow and Crookshanks and had a dragon called Aqua. Harry has an owl, Hedwig, a cat Shadow, and a dragon named Bolt. Ron has an owl Pigwidgeon and had a dragon, Scorch. And Draco has an Owl, Salazar. Hmm, I know... Athena!” Draco quirked an eyebrow.
“Athena, you gotta be joking? The goddess of wisdom!” he said. Hermione's eyes shown with anticipation and she nodded happily.
“Yes, Athena, Hedwig, Pig and Salazar! Yay!” With that, Harry and Ron disappeared, reappearing supporting a great blue iced cake, with the picture of a great book on the front labeled “Hermione's Sixteenth Year!” Mrs Weasley was crying with tears of joy, smiling broadly and holding up the same camera she had been sporting at Harry's birthday. Throughout the night various people were to be spotted holding the camera in their hands and snapping away at unsuspecting guests. Harry was having so much fun. Just singing and laughing with everyone. He had never felt apart of something this big; something so much like a family.
By the end of the night the table holding the remains of birthday paper was littered with hundreds of moving photographs of both Harry and Hermione's birthdays. The guests were slowly leaving, some slightly drunk, having been snuck some Fire Whisky by Mundungus Fletcher who was staggering away down the street, being supported by an extremely tipsy Diggle. Tonks was once again staying the night. She had fallen asleep on the coffee table, a bottle of Butterbeer clutched in one hand, her party hat still tied around her head, covering her aqua blue, cropped hair. Luna couldn't stay, saying she had to help her father with producing the next Quibbler Issue. Neville stammered a quick goodbye, allowing his grandmother to steer him away. He had confessed to Harry that they were going to visit his parents the next morning.
Ginny and Ron had gone to bed, still wearing their tilted polka-dotted party hats. Harry was sitting in the corner by the table containing the magic photographs and wrapping paper pieces. He picked up the nearest photo and couldn't contain a large grin. It was a picture of Harry, Ron and Hermione, laughing and hugging each other around the shoulders, totally immersed in themselves that they hadn't noticed Mrs. Weasley snap the camera. There were many other photos of the trio. But there were many of the others as well. There was one of the whole group, all smiling and supporting happy faces. In all of them, where Harry was shown, he was the happiest he'd ever been. His party had been the happiest. With everyone joining him, because it was his birthday, not because he was the boy who lived, not because of his wretched scar. But because it was his sixteenth birthday. It was jut another birthday party. No one cared that he was Harry Potter, the Dark Lords number one target. But because he was Harry; friend, student, godson.
Harry wiped away a tear from his eye when he heard a soft footfall behind him. Hermione appeared, a smile on her face and her eyes still shining from excitement and great memories.
Harry grinned and turned back to the photo of just Harry and Hermione. They were just staring into each others eyes, not caring half the room was gazing at them, but just savoring the moment they were sharing.
“I love photos,” Harry murmured, outlining Ron's form on the picture in his hand. It was another one of just the trio. “It captures memories forever, never changing, keeping that time safe. It's the only thing I can look at to remember the people I've lost, just how they were, not how they changed or how they became. It lets me keep the ones I love close, even when they're gone.” With this he picked up another photo. In this one, it had a very drunk Sirius, with his arm around Lupin's shoulder. They were both grinning broadly and waving. In another it had Harry, Sirius and Lupin. Harry with the last true Maraulders.
Then there was the one Harry favored most. Standing in the dining room, in a large group, was all the people Harry loved, it was his family. All the Weasley's, bar Percy, stood around Harry. Hermione, Sirius and Lupin stood around them smiling. Harry looked at his own happy figure, wondering if this was the last time they were all going to be together in a photograph, when something caught his eye. For a brief second he thought he spotted himself with deep brown eyes behind his black framed glasses. But now his own emerald green eyes glowed from the centre of red heads.
“Yes, I love them too,” Harry had forgotten about Hermione. He looked up to see her shiny chocolate brown eyes, gazing into his own. How he loved her! They leant in just as Tonks gave off an extremely loud snore from the coffee table, then a huge `thump'. Harry and Hermione ran into the Lounge Room to find Tonks on the floor asleep, on her stomach, one foot still on the coffee table with an arm, a black and white hat still clamped to her head. They stifled laughs and began to wander back up the stairs. Harry kissed his girlfriend goodnight, with a quick, “Happy Birthday”, before strolling up to his very own, large, Gryffindor Coloured Room, for once happy he was going to bed.
……………………………………………………………………………………………
The next morning dawned a bit too bright and early for Harry's liking. He was shaken awake by a large bear like black dog, which he immediately recognized as Sirius.
“Go way........sleep!” he mumbled incoherently, pulling the blankets over his unruly black hair, but not before the dog grabbed the now yellow sheets and yanked them to the floor. He yelled angrily, hearing Hermione scream excitedly from the hall way.
“HARRY POTTER! GET UP NOW! IF WE MISS THE APPARTATION TEST BECAUSE OF YOU-!” But Harry was already out of bed and scrambling around for his pants. Around three quarters of an hour later, it had taken nearly all of them to pry Ron from his bed, they were inside a luxurious black Ministry Car driven by a straight looking man. Ginny was going with them, her excuse being, “I want to see Ron splinch himself!” And Ron himself was leaning against the window, his mouth open and drool running down the glass fast asleep. Hermione was bouncing in her seat, running through everything she's read about Apparation through her head. Harry was leaning against Sirius, eyes half shut, thinking about shoving a sock in Hermione's mouth to stop her squawking. Draco was gazing barely out of the window.
They finally pulled up outside an old telephone booth, one of its windows shattered and the phone hanging limply off its hook. They all cramped inside the puny booth, Harry squashed up in the middle, with Ron's wand prodding him in the ribs. Sirius picked up the telephone receiver and dialed six, two, four, four, two. When the dial had spun back into its starting position a female voice spoke around the telephone box.
“Welcome to the Ministry of Magic. Please state your name and business.” Sirius looked around uncomfortably.
“I'm Sirius Black, and with me are Remus Lupin and Arthur Weasley of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office. We are here to take Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley to take the Apparation Test.”
“Thank you, Visitors please take the badges and pin them to the front of your robes.” They took the badges and did what was told, and heard the voice again. “Visitors to the Ministry, you are required to submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is located at the far end of the Atrium.” With that the floor shuddered and they began to be lowered into the ground. It was pitch black for a second before a light began at the bottom of the telephone box. Soon they were clambering onto the highly illuminated Atrium and making their way to the Security Desk.
The statues were back in place in the fountain as they all entered the old elevator with a very small, ruffled looking wizard.
“Hello, Mike!” greeted Mr. Weasley, shaking the small wizard's hand. He smiled up at them, showing two missing teeth.
“Hey Arthur, going to take the Apparation Test, are we?” they nodded and watched as he got off at Level Seven.
“Level Six, Department of Magical Transportation, incorporating the Floor Network Authority, Broom Regulatory Control, Portkey Office and Apparation Test Centre.” At this, when the doors opened the group stepped out onto a highly packed floor. Paper aeroplanes were zooming overhead many small cubicles. Sirius and Lupin led them down the middle lane, listening to Mr. Weasley greet various Witches and Wizards as they made their track down to the Apparation Centre. They stopped outside a large white door with the words: Apparation Area, Splinch Treating Inside. Sirius gave them all a smile and pushed open the door. Harry gasped soundlessly. Everything was white. Many red robed figures were standing on either side of clear glass panels, clipboards in their hands surveying their Students.
A tall, balding man hurried over to them. He smiled briefly at Harry and the others before turning to Arthur.
“I can fit the four of them in at Area Three. The Witch there is Martha Deirdre, there are around three people there now and then you guys will be next. It's just the Third lot down, good luck!” he then hurried away to a side door, outlined in black. Sirius grinned and started them down. There were only three people lining up like the tall man had said. One man looked around sixty something, with long, sweeping green robes. Another was around their own age, a girl, with long blond hair. The last was a tall, dark haired boy, around twenty, and was watching ahead of him with a slight fear. Harry turned to see where he was looking and watched as around five red robed figures were crowding around something on the ground. Harry tilted his head to get a better look, just as one figure moved. He felt a squeeze on his elbow as he looked at the half form of a person. It was as though they were split straight down the centre. Further down the area was the other half of the person, this time with his head and he was screaming. Harry turned to see Hermione looking intrigued.
“He got splinched!” Harry gulped.
