Chapter Three- Decisions

Harry looked around at the darkened passages, the faded paint on the walls. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up at Moony.

“Harry, I know how you feel. Loosing my two best friends. They were like brothers to me. But I have you, Harry. I have the order, as do you. You have your friends as well as the whole Weasley family. You're not alone. Sirius wanted you to have his home and belongings for you to remember him by. Think about it Harry.” He squeezed his shoulder before leaving to the darkness of the stair case leading to the kitchen. Harry stood there, not believing what had happened. He turned and fled up the stairs. Past the portrait of Sirius's mother, and into his bedroom. He slumped onto the floor to his trunk. Finally finding what he was looking for he walked down the hall to the end. He pushed open the door; it slammed behind him. He walked over to the wall and slid down, landing on the floorboards. He opened the book in his hands, tears on his face. He stared down at the open page. There were his mother and father, smiling up at him, and beside them, smirking, was Sirius. It was the photo of their wedding day, in the album Hagrid had given him after his first year.

“If I hadn't been born, they wouldn't have died. They would still be here, smiling.” He cried. Tears streamed down his face, he didn't bother to brush them away, knowing more would take their place.

“That's not true.” A voice sounded throughout the room, sounding familiar to Harry. He looked around. He didn't want to be disturbed, wanting to be alone. He ignored it, thinking he was hearing things.

“Everyone dies some day. It was my time. I'm happier now. I'm with James and Lily. With my friends again. I still miss you and Moony, but I'll see you again. It's your time to live. Be happy Harry.” Harry's heart was beating fast, pounding in his chest. He had heard Sirius.

” Sirius?” He called out helplessly, “I don't know what to do without you. I'm sorry. I should have learnt Occulumcy, I should have tried. Please Sirius?” He wandered around the room, finally coming to a curtain. It was billowing slightly as if someone had past through it. He pulled the curtain away. He stood facing Sirius. “Sir….Sirius?” He stared longingly at the figure before him. He touched his form. It was hard and rough. He stood staring at a life-size portrait of his god-father, smiling. Harry dropped to his knees.

“Harry. I told you not to blame your-self.” Harry jerked his head up quickly. It was talking to him.

“Sirius? Why did you leave me? I need you!” Another tear rolled silently down his face, gleaming in the shadows.

“I haven't left you. I'm still here, in this house, in you. So are your parents. We'll be waiting for you Harry. We won't go any where. We are watching over you always. You're not alone; you have Moony, your friends. They are your family. They are there for you and always will be, as are we.” Sirius's portrait was speaking fatherly to Harry, soothing him beyond belief. “I will always be here Harry, in your dreams, good or bad. Live on Harry, I'll see you later.” Sirius's form vanished from his frame, Harry thrust his fists upwards to try and reach his god father.

He sat there a while, slumped against the wall under the portrait of Sirius, his god father still missing. Harry's stomach rumbled in protest for food, he ignored it. The room darkened as the sun outside set, shadows elongated in the dreary silence. Foot steps echoed up the stairs they drew close and finally stopped out side the room. There was a hard knock before blinding light broke the shadowed darkness. Moony walked in, shutting the door behind him, making his way over to Harry.

“Harry. You've been in here all day. You can't stay in here forever; we are all worried about you. The whole order. If you want you can stay in this room. Oh………I see you've met Sirius's portrait. It was painted when he was born. As the real Sirius grew, so did his painting, but he nearly never was in it. He visited me and James in our homes, through other paintings. He hated this place all through his life, but started enjoying it for once when the order moved in, but his painting never came back, we thought he was visiting James when………” His voice trailed off. He continued looking at Harry, but after a while turned to leave. He was walking away when Harry called out.

“I've thought about it,” Moony stopped a sad smile on his face, “I've thought about it, and decided to have the house and Sirius's things, to remember him by.”

“That's good, Harry. If you want something to eat later, just come down.” The door shut behind Lupin, plunging Harry into darkness again. Silence rang through the room again; the only noise was a shallow breathing escaping Harry's lungs. The shadows darkened then disappeared as night befell upon the room, Harry's form didn't move in the night air, but shifted slightly as another light knock sounded on the door. Light flooded in again, but this time when the person spoke, it didn't sound remotely like his Professor.

“Harry?” The figure came clearer; the head was enlarged by an amount of bushy hair in the darkness. He didn't move, trying not to be spotted, but Hermione was already crouched in front of him. “Harry, please come out or do I have to drag you.” She placed her hand on Harry's shoulder, he shrugged it away.

“I want to be alone.” He tried to stay calm, but snappiness rose in his voice.

“That's fine, Harry. But you will have to pretend you're alone, because I'm not leaving until you come with me.” She sat down beside him, light still shining from the opened door. Harry sighed and stood up, Hermione stood up.

“I'm not leaving Hermione, I'm shutting the door, if I can't be alone then I want to be in darkness.” He strolled across the room and shut the door quickly. Hermione had sat back down when he walked back to his spot under the Siriusless portrait.

“That's alright, as long as you don't kick me out.” Harry could see her face beaming with anticipation. “I'm just wondering. How come you came up here anyways, you said you were coming down to dinner. I was waiting down there for you.” She faced Harry. He took a deep breath.

“Sirius had a will; he left everything to me.”

“You can move out of the Dursley's! Dumbledore has to let you; you will be under constant Order watch” He had never thought of it that way.

“I didn't want to at the start. Too many memories,” Harry looked at Hermione, “But now that you've put it that way, it's kind of a good thing. Living in Sirius's house, I don't want to forget him.” He felt a hand on his own.

“You won't forget him.”
